MLB Trade Rumors
By Leo Morgenstern | November 13
November 13: The Rangers made it official today
announced they signed Curvelo to a major league deal
November 10: The Rangers are closing in on a deal with right-handed reliever Luis Curvelo, reports Jon Morosi of MLB Network
It will be a major league contract for the 24-year-old hurler
Morosi reported that Curvelo was “one of the most popular free agents” at the annual GM Meetings in San Antonio
that doesn’t necessarily mean that teams preferred Curvelo to any of the top relievers on the market
high-reward target who could provide meaningful innings at a fraction of the price of a proven big league pitcher
The Venezuela native signed with the Mariners as an international free agent in 2018 and worked his way up to Double-A Arkansas in 2024
Over 49 games (66 2/3 IP) this past season
he produced the best numbers of his career to date
An unusually low 7.8% home run-to-fly ball ratio and an unsustainable .227 BABIP are signs that he’s due for some regression
it’s hard not to be impressed by his performance – especially his 30.6% strikeout rate
Curvelo has been a full-time reliever since his age-18 season, which partially explains why he was never a highly-ranked prospect in Seattle’s system. However, Eric Longenhagen of FanGraphs liked what he saw enough to rank Curvelo as the no
31 prospect in the Mariners organization this past July
Longenhagen was unconvinced by the righty’s fastball but had nothing but praise for his slider
and a 33.6% strikeout rate over his final 29 innings pitched
As for why Seattle would let Curvelo walk after such a strong season
He was eligible for minor league free agency this offseason
and the Mariners would have had to add him to their 40-man roster to prevent him from leaving
Morosi suggests they simply didn’t have space on the 40-man
they weren’t willing to make space either
The Rangers currently have four open spots on the 40-man
giving them plenty of room to add Curvelo to the mix
There’s a good chance he’ll begin the 2025 campaign at Triple-A Round Rock (he still has all of his minor league options remaining)
Texas is hoping he’ll play a role in the big league bullpen at some point next year
which means president of baseball operations Chris Young will have limited funds at his disposal
it makes perfect sense that Young would target the relatively inexpensive upside of Curvelo
Texas Rangers Transactions Luis Curvelo
Cost for the Rangers won’t stop them from releasing him as free agents are signed and trades are made
I think I trust the Mariners on pitchers and pitching development with their track record
as attested by the numerous pennants the team has won: ZERO
Also typical to find relievers that don’t require MLB deals
Release a guy who has no room on the 40 man roster that would probably not make the show this next season
If they felt he could make the team he would have gotten an offer
They get Brash back next season plus another I forget his name
They need a couple more relief guys but they have to be MLB ready
They will find a couple cheap FAs and fix any issues they have and have a great BP along with great starters
Turning a AA season into a major league contract in a different organization is definitely quite the accomplishment
Right up there with Cory Sliderino and John Sinkerton
Still can’t top the trade of Fister for Furbush between the Mariners and Tigers
Cardinals actually had a minor league pitcher in the 1960s named Phil Knuckles
The Phillies had an outfield prospect back in the 1930s named Joe Batspeed
Morosi reported that Curvelo was “one of the most popular free agents” at the annual GM Meetings in San Antonio
that doesn’t necessarily mean that teams preferred Curvelo to any of the top relievers on the market
but fan favorite boras controlling top free agents means a slow offseason
If only someone had fired JD the day before he shipped Emmanuel Clase to Cleveland for one inning of Corey Kluber
Mariners hand their rival a potential slam-the-door back end reliever for Nothing
Something about this doesn’t portend well for the future
If I trust one thing about the Mariners it’s their eye for pitching
If they don’t believe he was worth a 40 man spot I’m not here to argue
Yeah the Mariners aren’t perfect though
they couldn’t fix Luke Jackson in 2023 and then the Yankees picked him up and transformed him into a closer
Im gonna assume you mean Luke Weaver and Seattle had him for a month and 5 appearances
They cut bait when he pitched the same as he did with the previous team that cut bait
I’ll agree with you I didn’t see his transformation coming but neither did multiple teams before his cup of coffee in Seattle
What is there about being a borderline roster spot holder that makes you see slam-the-door back end reliever
He’s likely going to make somebody’s bullpen at some point
To further that I’ll bet Texas wouldn’t have made a 40 man spot if they were at 40
Having an existing opening made this easy
why did the Mariners add Blas Castano on their 40 man roster instead of him

Three more players have been optioned to the minors
The Texas Rangers announced today that infielder Justin Foscue and righthanded pitchers Emiliano Teodo and Luis Curvelo have been optioned to AAA Round Rock
All three players were expected to start the season in the minors
Foscue spent some time in the majors last year but was 0 for his last 37
and I have to think the Rangers want him to spend some time in AAA and get some confidence back and on a groove
The Rangers could use a righthanded bench bat
but the need is more for an outfielder than an infielder
and Foscue is behind Ezequiel Duran in the RH IF pecking order
having turned a lot of heads with a 100 mph fastball and the sort of stuff that could play in the late innings of a game
The 24 year old put up a 1.98 ERA in 20 appearances spanning 86 innings in Frisco last year
and the Rangers are likely to continue to have him work as a starter to start the season
Texas brought a number of righthanded relievers in on major league deals this offseason
I expect Teodo to pitch in the majors this season — and likely out of the bullpen — but it isn’t surprising they want him to start the season in AAA
Curvelo was signed as a minor league free agent
The 24 year old put up a 2.57 ERA in 66 innings over 49 appearances for the Mariners’ Texas League club last year
generally seen as a candidate to start the year on the major league roster

By Evan GrantRangers beat writer/insider
signing potential breakthrough candidate Luis Curvelo
Only issue: Curvelo’s next big league pitch will be his first
was among the most popular names discussed at the GM meetings
That’s not necessarily because he was viewed as a dominant pitcher
Morosi first reported the Rangers were nearing a deal with Curvelo
Curvelo’s four-seam fastball ranges from 94-97 mph and has a slider that has good swing-and-miss ability
He also added a sinker late in the season at Arkansas
Over his final 20 appearances of the season
allowed hitters a .103 batting average and a .350 OPS and struck out 27 hitters in 21.2 innings

the program has attained academic success with Curvelo at the helm
earning the “Best of the Best” Award in the spring of 2015 for having the highest grade point average (3.63) among the 16 teams in the athletics department
That was slightly higher than the 3.60 GPA in 2013-14
which included three players who had a 4.0 and more than half of the roster posting a GPA of 3.75 or higher
Curvelo advanced to the SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference) tournament all five years
leading the squad to the conference title and NCAA tournament bid in 2012 by winning three matches over a four-day stretch
Curvelo also led her squad to the conference championship match in 2010 and 2011
She developed 12 players who earned All-SWAC honors
14 players who were named to the SWAC all-tournament team

with some invoking roster moves from the Seattle Mariners
Mariners outfielder Mitch Haniger opted in to his $17.5 million player option and the club declined the $12 million option on second baseman Jorge Polanco
Seattle has made other roster moves
including selecting the contract of minor leaguer Blas Castano and activating Sam Haggerty
Matt Brash and Jackson Kowar off the 60-day injured list (as they were required to do per MLB rules)
But there's been another big offseason milestone that's flown under the radar so far: The General Manager meetings
started on Monday night and continue through Thursday
The General Manager meetings are usually when the ball truly starts to get rolling on offseason trades and signings
Everyone is face-to-face and phone calls that were "checking in" on the availability of a player(s) can quickly turn into the beginning stages of a deal
It's also an opportunity for teams to lay the groundwork with agents
a former Mariners prospect is a popular free agent target according to reports
According to MLB Network reporter Jon Morosi
former Seattle minor league pitcher Luis Curvelo is a popular free agent target among the GM meetings
Reliever Luis Curvelo is (quietly) one of the most popular free agents at the GM Meetings. Curvelo, who just turned 24, is a minor league free agent after 6 seasons in the Mariners system. Seattle didn't have room for him on their 40-man, but another team may. @MLBNetwork
Curvelo was an international free agent signing in 2018 out of Venezuela
Curvelo most recently pitched for the Mariners Double-A affiliate Arkansas Travelers in 2024
He had a 2.57 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 66.2 innings pitched in 49 appearances

Curvelo's minor league deal expired in 2024 and based on his most recent results
he'll be a quality bullpen arm for any team that goes after him
Seattle has been lauded for its pitching development over the last several seasons
another team will reap the benefits of that

Texas is attempting to add more depth to their bullpen. A recent report suggests that they are close to signing former Seattle Mariners prospect Luis Curvelo
He could be signed to a major league contract
this does not mean that he would automatically make the Opening Day cut given he still has all of his minor league options remaining
It is very likely that he would start the year with the Rangers' Triple-A affiliate
Curvelo had a very impressive minor league year in 2024. He posted an earned run average of 2.57 in 66.2 innings pitched and struck out 78 batters. Opponents hit just .167 against Curvelo with his WHIP being just 0.86. He even won reliever of the month in August for his work in Double-A
Update: Luis Curvelo is nearing a major-league contract with the Texas Rangers. @MLBNetwork https://t.co/zlmWSSyieN
but there is reason to believe that there could be regression in 2025
Fangraphs has rated the 24-year-old's slider as an excellent 70/70 grade
but having a pitch as dominant as that slider can help a fastball play better
His command is a concern as it is a 30/40 grade and that showed with a suspect 7.1% walk rate
especially if he makes the jump to Triple-A or the big leagues
Curvelo looks like he could be a solid addition to the organization in terms of depth
He may not be a "closer-caliber" acquisition
but he is still young and boasts some impressive numbers
The upside he brings would be very valuable to the Rangers since they are in desperate need of pitching
but it is very likely that he would begin his tenure with Texas in Triple-A

Those numbers show that he dominated, but there is reason to believe that there could be regression in 2025. His BAPIP was at an incredibly low .227. The league average in MLB is around .300.
Fangraphs has rated the 24-year-old's slider as an excellent 70/70 grade. His fastball is just a 45/45, but having a pitch as dominant as that slider can help a fastball play better. His command is a concern as it is a 30/40 grade and that showed with a suspect 7.1% walk rate. While this is not a horrible mark, there is definitely room for improvement, especially if he makes the jump to Triple-A or the big leagues.

He made his full-season minor league debut in 2022 with Single-A Modesto. In 2024, he is 12–2 with a 3.22 ERA (49 ER, 137.0 IP) and 137 strikeouts to 37 walks in the minors this season.

Pitcher Luis Curvelo has officially been signed by the Texas Rangers to a major league deal
The Texas Rangers have signed free agent pitcher Luis Curvelo to a major league deal
It had been reported on Sunday that Curvelo and the Rangers were close on a deal, and I wrote about Curvelo then
and don’t really have anything to add on the topic since then
so I will suggest that you click on the link and read that post instead of reiterating everything here
In addition, the Rangers officially announced that former Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker has joined the club as a senior advisor. That news broke over a week ago, and I wrote about that at the time as well
so instead of just writing the same thing again
I will encourage you to go read that post from last week
has been inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame class of 2025 at Mississippi Valley State University
for her contributions on and off the pitch as an athlete and coach
Curvelo began her historic journey at MVSU
where she was a founding member of the women’s soccer program
She led MVSU to it's first SWAC Championship and NCAA tournament appearance in 2005
earning SWAC tournament MVP honors and making history by assisting the first goal and scoring the game-winner in the championship
A presidential Scholar and business standout
she graduated with her bachelor’s degree in 2007
later earning a Master’s in Sports Coaching Education from Southern Miss in 2013
Her playing career continued overseas as she competed for the Portugal National Team and professionally in Spain’s Super League with CF Puebla
She also played for three USL W-League teams
including the Rochester Rhinos and Tampa Bay Hellenic
Curvelo has left a legacy at every institution she’s touched
She began her NCAA Division I head coaching career at MVSU (2009–2013)
capturing a SWAC Tournament title and Coach of the Year honors in 2012
She went on to lead Cleveland State (2014–2016)
where her squads broke program records in goals
she guided the team to multiple 13-win seasons
and two NCAA Tournament appearances—setting new benchmarks for wins
leading the Bearkats to a Conference USA Tournament semifinal appearance in 2023
Soccer "B" coach and certified coaching educator
Curvelo is also a proud graduate of the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy
serving on multiple advisory committees and mentoring countless student-athletes who have gone on to professional and national teams
From SWAC standout to international pro and pioneering coach, Sonia Curvelo embodies what it means to build a legacy of leadership
we heard that former Seattle Mariners prospect Luis Curvelo was generating interest on the free agent market
we've heard that he's nearing a deal with one of the M's division rivals
Update: Luis Curvelo is nearing a major-league contract with the Texas Rangers
Morosi indicated earlier this week that the Mariners didn't have room for Curvelo on the 40-man roster
so that's why they weren't able to keep him
He's 24 years old right now and is coming off a year in which spent the entire season at Double-A Arkansas
The Travelers won the Southern League Championship as Curvelo went 4-0 in 49 games
It will be interesting to see how big a loss this ends up being for the Mariners
Seattle has had success in recent years in developing relievers (Drew Steckenrider
Trent Thornton and Paul Sewald come to mind)
but they won't get a chance to extract the same value out of Curvelo
they'll have to watch as Curvelo attempts to blossom with their division rivals
The Rangers have plenty of needs in the bullpen after seeing David Robertson opt-out of his contract
Kirby Yates and Jose Leclerc are also free agents as well
The Rangers finished third in the American League West, behind the Mariners and the Houston Astros
Texas won the World Series in the 2023 season
BRADY FARKAS
The Rangers are reportedly close to a major league deal with pitcher Luis Curvelo
The Texas Rangers are close to an agreement on a major league contract with righthanded relief pitcher Luis Curvelo
He doesn’t appear to have ever cracked the BA top 30 list for Seattle
Curvelo is a fastball/slider guy who had not pitched above A ball before this past season
putting up a 2.57 ERA in 66 innings over 49 games
Longenhagen says his fastball plays down to its shape
which is something that the Rangers may look to do something about
He’s not someone I would have guessed would be getting a major league deal this offseason
Whether multiple teams are offering him major league deals
or the Rangers are giving him a major league deal to get an edge on the other teams pursuing him
He will have a full three options going forward
and if he doesn’t show what the Rangers want to see this spring or once the season starts
it would be simply enough to put him on the waiver wire if they need a 40 man spot
he’s never pitched at the Major League level
But it didn’t stop the Rangers from placing him on their MLB roster
The move stands in stark contrast to the two major bullpen moves the Rangers made last offseason, signing two well-heeled veterans in Kirby Yates and David Robertson
Yates emerged as the Rangers’ closer and earned an All-Star nod
along with long-time Rangers reliever Jose Leclerc
Curvelo may represent the first piece of starting over
Per MLB Network’s Jon Morosi
Curvelo was “one of the most popular free agents” at the annual GM Meetings in San Antonio earlier this month
Why? It’s possible the former international signee of the Seattle Mariners has finally figured something out
The 24-year-old played at Double-A Arkansas in 2024
and a 2.57 ERA in 66 2/3 innings over 49 appearances
He was the Mariners’ minor league pitcher of the month in August and was among Texas League pitching leaders in holds (first with 14)
His 189 appearances since 2018 rank second among Mariners minor league pitchers
so he would have to make a quick jump to help the Rangers in 2025
The Mariners had to move him to their 40-man roster or allow him to be a free agent
Texas had spots open on its 40-man and pounced
Aside from Yates
Robertson and Jose Urena — who is also a free agent — the Rangers’ bullpen was below the league average in most major categories
A look at the team’s 40-man roster right now shows that president of baseball operations Chris Young needs to continue the work of rebuilding this bullpen
The 40-man roster includes relief options like Grant Anderson
like Owen White and Cole Winn could be swingmen
World Series hero Josh Sborz remains an unknown quantity with a lingering shoulder issue
Signing Curvelo represents low-risk and high reward for Texas
which needs to hit the jackpot this offseason when it comes to the bullpen
ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Rangers have hired former Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker as a senior adviser for baseball operations
Texas officially announced Schumaker's addition to its front office on Wednesday
when the team also signed right-handed pitcher Luis Curvelo to a major league contract
Schumaker was the 2023 National League Manager of the Year after Miami went 84-78 and made the fourth postseason appearance in club history
The Marlins slipped to 62-100 last season after general manager Kim Ng
who was responsible for hiring Schumaker and building the roster that made the playoffs
The Marlins and Schumaker mutually agreed that he would not return for the 2025 season
He led a roster decimated by trades and injuries to a 146-178 record over the past two seasons
Before going to Miami, Schumaker was a bench coach for St. Louis, where he played for the Cardinals during their 2011 World Series championship over Texas. He played 11 big league seasons with St. Louis (2005-12), the Los Angeles Dodgers (2013) and Cincinnati (2014-15)
was 4-0 with three saves and a 2.57 ERA (19 ER over 66⅔ innings) over 49 relief appearances this year for Double-A Arkansas in Seattle's organization
originally signed with Seattle as an international free agent in 2018

Some people get into photography later in life
like our newest DPG Photographer of the Week
Marcio’s earliest photography memory was running around as a young kid with his dad’s old Super 8 camera
before graduating to a borrowed Yashica rangefinder from his grandfather
he became a “professional photographer,” shooting weddings
It wasn’t until later in life that he began photographing life underwater
Marcio has traveled all over the globe making pictures of the underwater world and considers himself lucky to have joined his love of photography with his love of scuba diving

Does transitioning to renewable energy sources show sufficient creation care
indigenous people have questions for green-energy multinationals building wind farms on their reservation
a group of Wayuu women protect their fire and food from the sand and wind
They will be busy all morning preparing goat stews and chicha
Their voices ring with the musicality of their language
The winds comb the tops of the trupillo mesquite trees and agitate the tiniest bushes along the paths
Strong wind and blinding light are ever-present in this semi-arid region of Colombia’s Guajira Peninsula
in the indigenous neighborhood of Talouloma’ana
leaders from all over the territory are meeting to discuss other kinds of winds – the winds of uncertainty
Wayuu women prepare food in a traditional kitchen
and 23 percent of malnutrition-related deaths among Colombia’s minors occur there
the indigenous delegates are distressed about new wind energy projects proposed by the Colombian government
Some are already underway near Cabo de la Vela
a neighboring region known for its virgin Caribbean beaches which is also home to many Wayuu sacred spaces
With the inauguration of the windfarm “Guajira I” in January 2022
a ten-turbine installation generating twenty megawatts and covering 5.5 hectares
then-Colombian president Iván Duque announced the construction of sixteen more over the next three years
Many Wayuu communities disagreed with these plans because the government neither included them in the planning nor informed them fully of the risks
even though the turbines will be erected on indigenous land
Clean energy infrastructure can also have environmental and social impacts in the areas where it is installed
Are the companies taking measures to preserve important sacred sites
Where are the studies on the environmental and social impacts
And what are the benefits of these projects
These are all crucial questions for peoples who hold painful memories of past development projects that did not benefit the local people
One of the meeting’s participants is Guillermo Ojeda Jayaliyuu
secretary of the Major Autonomous Board of Palabreros
Palabreros resolve family and tribal indigenous disputes through their restoring
we asked Guillermo what the winds mean to the Wayuu
like the wall-less rooms attached to Wayuu homes from where the horizon is always visible
which are foundational to the Wayuu society
cannot be spoken within an enclosed building because they require continuous
guardian entities in Wayuu cosmology,” Guillermo continues
was responsible for all the living things in the territory
We know that the wind’s paths run through this territory and that the multinational corporations have decided to harness its lifegiving force
But the turbines will disrupt the wind’s path
They will disturb the sacred places where medicinal plants grow.”
Board of Palabreros and the Force of Wayuu Women meet to discuss the proposed wind farm projects
expresses his sorrow and distress over the wind farms
He worries that the vegetation will retreat when concrete bases are constructed for the hundreds of turbines in the sixteen wind farms
This will cause a massive displacement of the Wayuu
because their animals will no longer have places to graze
There are wind farms or there is life; the two are not compatible
It would be an extreme error to insist on installing these wind farms in sacred places
It’s disrespectful; it would be like building a wind farm in the Vatican.”
with each project negotiating separately and reaching agreements under different terms – often unjust – with the Wayuu communities
such as a “shadow flicker”: an irritating
blinking effect caused by the blades turning in bright sunlight
But there are no studies on how these gigantic towers will alter cosmologically significant geographic features
and water sources are an important part of Wayuu communication with the divine
This rupture of the land itself will alter the spiritual intelligibility of the territory
raising the possibility of significant cultural suppression
is the first to come on line since Jepírachi in 2004
traditionally the place where Wayuu souls travel after death to find the gateway to the afterlife
we talked with Álvaro Iguarán Uliana
a seventy-year-old Wayuu commercial leader
Because of his experience with customs regulations
he has participated in multiple negotiations with national governments
the agreements between the corporations and Wayuu families are extremely unequal
“The government and corporations arrive with teams of specialists and professionals,” he explains
“The Wayuu are left negotiating with little-to-no advice
The corporations unilaterally establish the conditions of shareholding and profit sharing
There is no legal framework for agreeing to cut down a trupillo tree
They haven’t considered the loss of natural pastures or the spiritual dimensions
like what will happen to the wandering spirits of the dead.”
In the opinion of most indigenous leaders interviewed for this article
some families are negotiating to stave off starvation
The corporation offers them a few provisions – animals and corn – whose usefulness to the living will vanish as rapidly as a funerary expense
There is no “shared value” policy here; only a “merciful gift.” A corporate agent confirmed with indifference that the indigenous could not possibly be partners because they did not understand losses and returns
These bad pacts could well be sowing the seeds of social tension that will erupt someday
In July 2021, regional media reported that various traditional authorities representing their communities had blocked the road between the town of Uribia and the village of Wüimpeeshi. The protesters were demanding free, informed and prior consent to decisions concerning the land and natural environment
government spokespeople announced that a special battalion of the Colombian army had been dispatched
with “mission of protecting the investment of the foreign economic corporations which have trusted Colombia enough to invest in this country.” It is clear that foreign investment is officially protected by the state
protects the rights of the local indigenous communities
is divided between those who approve of Isagen’s project and those who do not
The reservation is protected by Colombia’s constitution
which establishes that indigenous lands are non-transferable communal property
and a sweltering sun falls over the territory
The meeting’s participants are seated in a cool
sharing chicha while the leaders take turns speaking
has said that the construction of sixteen wind farms in Wayuu land would generate eleven thousand jobs
believes the jobs will only last for the construction phase
Jazmín Romero Epiayu comes from the southern reservations
She is a distinguished leader from the organization Fuerza de Mujeres Wayuu (Force of Wayuu Women)
a young and vehement leader on environmental issues and women’s rights
In her role as a Wayuu activist and feminist
not only has she observed the activities of wind energy corporations
but also the exploitative works of other companies
In addition to its immense wind and solar potential
the Guajira Peninsula has other valuable natural resources like carbon and natural gas
which has been divided among the multinationals
and accidental deaths and coal pollution along the train lines
They understandably feel they have lost control over their own lands
Elba and Denys Velasquez Uriana live in Mushalerray
The Epieyu are the traditional owners of this territory
and although Elba has married into the clan
she cannot take part in decision-making here
Jazmin’s voice and verdicts are clear and firm: “The presence of more megaprojects in our territory exacerbates the problem we have had throughout history
which we have not been able to remedy either through politics or from within our culture
There is a high risk that the territory will suffer
External forces have created disharmony on the inside which is fracturing our culture
and even our fundamental Wayuu spirituality
We have to begin by respecting Mother Earth
Her organs are these exploited resources like gas and coal
which are being sacked without her consent
Nobody has asked Mother Earth what her coal
Joutai (the wind) is an invisible being which represents breath
Jazmín thinks that the foreigners “come for riches or for the power of Joutai or for what he provides us
Can we keep falling in the error of not asking Joutai how he is
And we have not told him that there is risk and asked him for wisdom
through losing their connection with tradition and adopting a Western lens
have been complicit in this whole situation.”
The Lanshalia indigenous community is located near Guajira 1 wind farm
Many of the elders who approved the project have died
and some communities are requesting new consultations
Inter-clan disagreements over the project have been escalating
a representative from an area that already has a wind farm
is happy with the agreement reached with Isagen
and both sides have kept up open communication
is direct dialogue between corporations and indigenous groups
Isagen has given the Wayuu several benefits: a percentage of the profit from the sale of carbon certificates
and compensation for the use of the territory
we have enough money flowing into our community to keep up our economy
and our quality of life has improved.” He believes that the conflicts over the wind turbines arise when “the corporations do not speak with the traditional owners of the territory
Although they might live in the territory of their fathers’ clan
they have no rights to decision-making there because Wayuu society is matrilineal
We have been in dialog with Isagen some fifteen years
Today the corporations want to do this whole process in a year.”
As the meeting progresses and indigenous leaders voice their disagreement regarding the direction these energy projects are taking
I ponder that the country could take better advantage of its past experience
The first wind farm built in Colombia was the Jepirachi
Planning and negotiations started in 1999 and lasted until June 2002
The community assisted in the environmental impact study and in drafting a plan for environmental stewardship
The project has not progressed without tensions
including prolonged occupations of the farms by protesters
creating a valuable learning experience regarding the right and wrong ways to go about things
considering the mantle of secrecy that hides the research phase
and the absence of information available to the Wayuu regarding the environmental and social impacts on their territory
Negotiations will continue into the next day with new delegates
I find a moment to talk with Miguel Ángel López Hernández
the arrival of dozens of wind farms “does not represent anything new in the context of Colombian-Wayuu relations
Despite constitutional promises of Wayuu autonomy
Take for example the so-called ‘preconsultations,’ where the corporations simply share information with the Wayuu instead of providing information and discussing different options
Reinaldo is a fisherman and a guide for flamingo-watchers in Laguna Grande
since they determine his daily fishing voyage and affect flamingo flight paths
Miguel Ángel thinks that the objective of these projects continues to be “financial gain for the owners of capital
who then deliver the dregs drop by drop to the territory’s majority indigenous population.” As we discuss the different conceptions of wind held by the corporations and the Wayuu
he is hopeful: “The project could be an opportunity for two languages to come closer together
Scientific knowledge about the winds could be reinterpreted through other kinds of wisdom
if in turn this acceptance would allow them to understand us better.”
We have learned the following key truth: the winds the Wayuu speak of and those that move corporate investment and government politics do not appear to have anything in common
It is not a simple disagreement about economic compensation
The heart of the matter is an ontological conflict
a difference regarding the nature of things
and the rights of the beings who inhabit the land
There will need to be new dialogs about the different ideas of Mother Earth
because this is one of their characteristics as a people: “to breathe and sweat down to the roots while sighing with the opening of wings

he was going to continue to play at the next level,” said GNB Voc-Tech football coach Justin Cruz of meeting Ian Curvelo
“His work ethic and his real love for the game stood out,” Cruz continued
“You can kind of tell if someone really loves football
drove Ian from his days of playing youth football in New Bedford’s South End for the Whalers to him continuing his athletic career this fall at Mass Maritime Academy
I was always pushed by my godfather,” the 18-year-old Curvelo said
“He was a great player at GNB Voc-Tech in the 1980s and I wanted to be like him
He never made it to the college level so I guess I’m one up on him
If I ever had an issue with football or anything else
Curvelo said he wouldn’t have arrived at this moment without the support of his parents
“I’m blessed to have what I have,” he said
They were even at Rockland and not many kids’ parents were at that game
I’m lucky to have parents that have been by my side.”
Curvelo had narrowed down his college choices to Bridgewater State and Mass Maritime
A trip to the waterside campus in Bourne sealed the deal
I knew that was going to be a place for me,” said the Fairhaven resident
“The campus is beautiful; it’s right on the canal.”
knows that making the jump from GNB Voc-Tech to Div
“Academically they’re really good and in football they’re really good,” he said
I didn't think I would be strong enough mentally and physically to put up with the demands you have to do there
But the more people tell me I can’t do something
Curvelo is also hoping his play at Mass Maritime will put GNB Voc-Tech football on the map
I'm going to have to prove to them who I am and where I come from,” he said
“Our school isn’t known for our football program
was instrumental in GNB Voc-Tech’s turnaround from two wins in 2017 to making the Div
“I feel like this year was something where we proved everyone wrong
Then we came out and played in a playoff game which is amazing to me.”
Curvelo said another highlight was beating Fairhaven 57-0 on Sept
“It was playing and beating a hometown team that I had never beat before,” he said
“We talked about playing smashmouth football and we went out and did that.”
Curvelo provided leadership and experience to Voc-Tech’s offensive and defensive lines
“He was one of our bigger lineman,” Cruz said
it was his knowledge of the game and understanding of his footwork
Curvelo joins a Mass Maritime team coming off a 6-4 record
its best finish to a season since 1999 and the best record under coach Jeremy Cameron
who was in the engineering and robotics program at Voc-Tech
said he plans to study facilities engineering at MMA
“I just like how you can take something in your head
“You can take your thoughts and make them into a reality.”

Capt. Sergio Curvelo will never forget the call that woke him from his sleep at 3 a.m
It was an assistant chief in the Miami-Dade area requesting help from him and his dog trained to smell human remains
Curvelo, with the Sarasota County Search and Rescue Recovery K9 unit, says he was still dazed and confused when the chief explained to him over the phone that a 12-story condo building had collapsed in Surfside.
"It was just one of those things where you're like
what are you talking about,'" Curvelo told the Herald-Tribune
From the scene: A quick dip in the water likely saved Surfside man from condo tower tragedy
Champlain Towers: Remembering those who died in the condo collapse in Surfside
Opinion: Catastrophic condo collapse nearly happened in Sarasota
grabbed his K-9 Stryker and headed out the door for the three-hour drive.
"I didn't even ask him where it was," Curvelo said
Curvelo said it was nothing like he'd ever seen in his more than 10 years of emergency response service
Curvelo spent his early days as a firefighter and then transitioned to a K9 search specialist
Seeing a building collapse of this magnitude was foreign territory.
"It was overwhelming to see a 12-story building on the ground like that."
More victims named in Surfside: Death toll at 10 and 151 still missing. What else we know Monday
Before and after: A look at Champlain Towers South, the Florida building that partially collapsed
it was pretty emotional," Curvelo said
"The deputies and police departments were pretty busy trying to be respectful and understanding of the family members trying to get onto the actual scene and holding them back
I saw a couple of times where things got a little hairy."
Curvelo said he wasn't "cleared" to give in-depth details of the scene
But he noted the state of the building was difficult for first responders to navigate.
"The whole thing is like a pancake," he said
"Most parts are like 8 inches of space between floors
Curvelo says he usually tries to disconnect when helping in disaster areas.
He was down in Surfside from early Thursday through Saturday
waiting to get called back to the scene.
"This is what I'm good at and my passion is for search and rescue
"Gotta' keep your emotions in check or else you know

CT scans have dramatically improved the ability of doctors to diagnose medical problems
but the increased use of the scans in recent years has brought with it a concern about the amount of radiation delivered to patients
new technology at both Kalamazoo hospitals is helping to keep the radiation levels of CT scans as low as possible while still providing clearly defined images of the body’s interior
That’s important because radiation exposure is cumulative and at high levels carries the risk of causing cancer and a smaller risk of causing genetic damage
The new technology — called adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction
or ASIR — was developed by GE Healthcare and allows a 30 to 40 percent reduction in radiation compared to a standard scan while obtaining the same image clarity
it can produce a higher-resolution image while using the same amount of radiation
Marcio Curvelo said ASIR can reduce radiation by as much as 40 percent to 83 percent
depending on the body area being scanned and the patient’s body type
all CT scans have some “noise,” or areas where an image would be somewhat fuzzy
ASIR is able to pinpoint these areas to improve their clarity so that the radiologist doesn’t have to use as high a radiation dose as otherwise necessary
but that’s like decreasing megapixels,” Curvelo said
and it’s actually a very smart way of doing things
Borgess Medical Center has the ASIR technology on its three most recently purchased CT scanners — one at the hospital and two at outpatient locations
Borgess at Woodbridge Hills and Borgess Westside Lab and Radiology — and is in the process of installing it on another scanner at the hospital
“Our long-term goal is to have it on a fifth scanner when we replace that one” at the hospital
“ASIR has been in production for two or three years and is a well-established technology,” he said
New CT machines — CT is short for computed tomography — are “very
A new scanner costs between $1.2 million and $1.4 million
Bronson has purchased a new scanner that has the ASIR technology and has added ASIR to one of its existing scanners
The hospital also plans to add the technology to its third CT machine
The affiliated Bronson Advanced Radiology Services also has a CT scanner
Hodgman pointed out that Bronson’s new Discovery 750 HD scanner
also has another technological advance — a modified garnet crystal that is more sensitive in detecting X-rays
“It allows taking more views or acquiring more data with the same amount of radiation exposure,” he said
The new machine’s high-resolution mode is not necessary for many kinds of procedures
but it is particularly useful in visualizing small structures like coronary and cerebral arteries
Radiologists can look for a cerebral aneurysm or evidence of bleeding in the brain
And sometimes with a suspected stroke you are looking for narrowing in the arteries
Bronson officials declined to reveal the price of the Discovery scanner
according to documents the hospital filed with the state of Michigan
Bronson proposed spending $2.1 million on a new CT scanner at the end of 2009
Curvelo and Mushett all emphasized that the two local hospitals have been very careful — both before and after obtaining the new technology — to keep patients’ radiation exposure to a minimum
That’s why we made this investment in this technology,” Curvelo said
“I take the risks of radiation very seriously,” Hodgman said
“and I spend a lot of time educating people about it.”
“We have specific protocols for different applications (of CT scans),” Hodgman added
“Those have been carefully assessed and are based on the size and age of patients.”
Bronson radiologists review all doctors’ orders for CT scans
“Every week we change CTs ordered and change them to less radiation,” he said
we’re consultants and we make sure patients are protected from unnecessary radiation.”
radiologists will sometimes do an ultrasound
It was concern about the irradiation of pediatric patients
that prompted revised radiation protocols nationwide for both children and adults
givng two or three times the dose necessary,” he said
Curvelo said that in the past five to 10 years the use of CT scans has “skyrocketed.”
“Now the likelihood of a patient getting multiple CT scans is very high,” he said
“there’s been a lot of fine-tuning” when it comes to CT scans and radiation use
the exposure to medical radiation is about six times greater now than it was in 1980
Hodgman noted that Bronson keeps track of a patient’s radiation exposure levels as part of the person’s medical history
“But currently there is not an effective way to measure the exposure they may have received elsewhere,” Hodgman said
“There has been some discussion about making that part of the medical record in the U.S
This practice has started in some European countries.”
The website RadiologyInfo.org suggests that patients who get frequent exams involving radiation or have multiple care providers should keep their own record of their radiation exams
mammograms and PET (proton emission technology) scans
where a radioactive material is sent to a specific body part and a machine detects the radiation coming from the body
Athough there are risks to radiation exposure
those risks should be put in proper perspective
“We’re exposed to radiation every day in our daily lives,” Hodgman said
“and our bodies have the ability to repair radiation damage
One scan is a small fraction of your lifetime exposure to radiation
The likelihood of cancer being caused by a test is very small
Certainly there is reason to be concerned (about medical radiation)
But are all of the CT scans being done necessary
But they make a huge difference in patient care.”
Hodgman and Mushett all emphasized the tremendous benefits that CT scans provide and the relative safety of CT scans compared to some other diagnostic tests
“There’s a lot of cutting back (on radiation use) that we should be doing and will be doing,” Curvelo said
“But the benefits outweigh the risks and consequences.”
does not require the dye injection of a regular cardiogram and is safer
“CT scans have replaced diagnostic angiograms,” Curvelo said
Curvelo put CT scans in the category of penicillin and X-rays as “a paradigm-changing technology” for medicine
“Medicine has had few times when technology has made such a difference,” he said
CT scans have “reduced tremendously the number of unnecessary surgeries.”
“Ten years ago when I trained in surgery,” Curvelo said
“there was a 10 percent rate of false appendectomies
we would do surgery and would take out a normal appendix
That number has come down to 1 to 2 percent.”
“I’ve been in radiology for 30 years,” Mushett said
“The development of CT technology is one of the key tools doctors have available to diagnose disease
It used to be it was not uncommon for patients to have exploratory surgery for lots of reasons
CT scans have practically eliminated that process.”
CT scans can reduce medical costs in some cases by preventing unnecessary surgeries
they have chest pain and are admitted to intensive care to rule out a heart attack
we spend $20,000 to $30,000 to keep them in the intensive care unit,” Curvelo said
Sometimes it’s better to do one good test.”

MLB free agency is here and superstars such as Juan Soto are understandably receiving the most attention. However, Jon Morosi of MLB Network recently revealed a player who is “quietly” among the “most popular free agents.”
“Reliever Luis Curvelo is (quietly) one of the most popular free agents at the GM Meetings
is a minor league free agent after 6 seasons in the Mariners system
Seattle didn't have room for him on their 40-man
Curvelo pitched to a 2.57 ERA in the minor leagues during the 2024 season
It was surprising that Curvelo did not receive an MLB opportunity with the Mariners
perhaps he will receive his opportunity elsewhere
there is a chance that he will re-sign with Seattle
but Curvelo is likely looking to join a ball club with a need in the bullpen
The Mariners have work to do this offseason
Seattle led the American League West early in 2024 but struggled at times down the stretch
The Mariners still have postseason potential but they need to add some reinforcements
The 2024 offseason will be important for them as they hope to develop a legitimate contending roster
the 24-year-old reliever has a bright future
It seems as if he is receiving no shortage of attention
but there are plenty of teams around the league who would love to add a 24-year-old reliever who features a high ceiling to their bullpen
Luis Curvelo will not receive too much attention in rumors and free agency predictions but signing the former Mariners reliever could prove to be crucial
He will be a player to watch as MLB free agency continues
Joey Mistretta is a Dallas Mavericks beat reporter
Dallas Wings beat reporter and lead MLB editor for ClutchPoints
Mistretta graduated college with a degree in broadcast journalism from Biola University
and he has bylines at NBA Analysis Network and RotoWire
the Texas Rangers are signing free-agent reliever Luis Curvelo after a stint with the Mariners
Update: Luis Curvelo is nearing a major-league contract with the Texas Rangers.” via Morosi on X
This potential move by the Rangers signifies their intent to bolster their bullpen with young
Curvelo's career in the minors has been marked by gradual development and improvement
showcasing a repertoire that has caught the attention of several major-league clubs
With a fastball clocked in the mid-90s and a developing slider that has been effective against both right—and left-handed hitters
Curvelo represents a potentially valuable asset for the Rangers pitching staff
