Description of the crisis: The Esmeraldas Province
landslides damaged the Trans-Ecuadorian Oil Pipeline System (SOTE)
causing the spill of 25,116.95 barrels of crude oil and contaminating 82 km of rivers and estuaries
A total of 31,795.81 m³ of oily waste has been recovered
Esmeraldas has been heavily affected by the rains
17,906 people were affected and reported damages included 312 hectares of agricultural land
Although there is progress in the response
a 6.1 MLv magnitude earthquake was recorded 8.4 km from Esmeraldas
a total of 2,810 people were reported affected
and 222 without homes across five main cantons
including significant damage in the city of Esmeraldas
produced by the Ecuadorian Red Cross Situation Room
shows an estimate of the impact: the red circle indicates an area within 0 to 10 km of the epicentre
Although the depth and proximity to the epicentre caused notable material damage
no major human losses have been reported so far
Impact assessments will continue over the coming days
Description of the crisis: Rains in the littoral area
Ecuador’s National Risk and Emergency Management Service (SNGR) 2,970 adverse events related to rainfall have been recorded
The most frequent events have been landslides (41.18%)
The provinces most impacted are Manabí
a Red Alert was declared in six coastal provinces
The regional emergency was renewed and extended to new areas such as Pichincha
The state road network was also declared in emergency in Guayas
heavy rains caused new floods in areas of Manabí and Esmeraldas (Teaone River)
25 from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (INAMHI) warns that heavy rains will continue in the coastal and Amazon regions
Parishes Affected by Flooding in Daule-Peripa Reservoir
supplies water to large agricultural areas in the provinces of Guayas
heavy rains in the coastal region caused rising reservoir levels and overflows along the Daule River
particularly affecting the cantons of Balzar
the most impacted parishes include Pueblo Nuevo
based on meteorological bulletins from INAMHI
warn that highintensity rains will continue to affect coastal areas in the coming days
This increases the risk of new floods in areas adjacent to the reservoir and along the Daule River
The National Risk Management Secretariat (SNGR) maintains the red alert for Guayas
and activation of cantonal COEs in anticipation of possible future flooding and overflows

A rupture appeared in a 500-kilometer (310-mile) pipeline operated by the state-owned oil company Petroecuador on Mar. 13, according to a statement by the company
crude oil flowed downstream for more than 80 kilometers (50 miles) through the Esmeraldas River and its tributaries towards the mouth at the Pacific Ocean
Witnesses described a “geyser” of oil erupting for up to seven hours
according to marine biologist Eduardo Rebolledo Monsalve of the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador’s Esmeraldas campus
Monsalve has been canvasing the region to assess the damage
“The entire southern shore of the Esmeraldas River is completely saturated with oil,” Monsalve told Mongabay by email
“The spill means a temporary loss of aquatic life
with long-term damage depending on environmental conditions such as rainfall and river flow,” Monsalve said
the impact could last around three years if the rainy seasons are mild.”
Local authorities declared an environmental emergency on Mar. 14, with the mayor of the city of Esmeraldas, Vicko Villacis, stating that the “disaster is causing unprecedented ecological damage.”

At the Esmeraldas River Estuary Mangrove Wildlife Refuge, a protected area spanning 242 hectares (598 acres) at the intersection of the Esmeraldas River with the Pacific Ocean, the oil has coated mangrove channels
poisoning aquatic life and contaminating sediments
On Mar. 18, Ecuador’s Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition published a plea for non-profit organizations and volunteers to help with the cleanup and recovery of flora and fauna
The refuge is home to three different species of mangrove trees and more than 100 species of fishes
including the South American coati (Nasua nasua)
a crustacean with high cultural and economic value in the region
The ministry has ordered Petroecuador to carry out immediate containment and cleanup efforts and has activated emergency conservation funds to monitor and mitigate further damage to the protected area.
The spill in Esmeraldas province is not the first of its kind. According to Amazon Frontlines, a U.S.-based environmental non-profit, more than 1,496 oil spills have been recorded in the nation between 2005 and 2022.

Correction: A previous version incorrectly stated the spill happened in Ecuador’s Amazon.
The “fortress conservation” model is under pressure in East Africa, as protected areas become battlegrounds over history, human rights, and global efforts to halt biodiversity loss. Mongabay’s Special Issue goes beyond the region’s world-renowned safaris to examine how rural communities and governments are reckoning with conservation’s colonial origins, and trying to forge a path forward […]

This spill left half a million people without drinking water for nearly 12 days, contaminated rivers, destroyed crops, and seriously endangered the health of entire communities.
The massive oil spill is also affecting one of the poorest provinces in the country. According to Ecuador’s National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC), five out of ten Esmeraldas residents live on less than three dollars per day. The most heavily impacted communities rely primarily on agriculture, livestock, artisanal fishing, and tourism, and their livelihoods are severely affected by this environmental catastrophe.
This disaster highlights the deep structural inequality faced by racialized and impoverished territories and communities, worsened by ongoing state neglect and the absence of effective public policy. It is also a clear example of environmental racism—a crisis rooted in an unsustainable development model that prioritizes economic interests over the lives and well-being of people and ecosystems.
According to the Ministry of the Environment, Water, and Ecological Transition (MAATE), over 80 kilometres of waterways have been contaminated, primarily impacting the Caple, Viche, and Esmeraldas rivers. Rising water levels in the Esmeraldas River, caused by heavy seasonal rains, have allowed the oil to spread to estuaries, wetlands, and tributaries, severely affecting ecosystems and aquatic life.
Like other disasters of this scale, this spill could have been prevented—or mitigated—if Petroecuador had implemented automated pressure loss alert systems, a key mechanism to detect pipeline ruptures early. Proper maintenance of pipelines and oil infrastructure is also essential to prevent these incidents. Yet the lack of investment and oversight has contributed to a devastating outcome.
This disaster has exposed the fragility of Ecuador’s oil infrastructure and the urgent need for public policies that guarantee responsible environmental management whilst protecting the country’s most vulnerable populations. The response from the State and the companies involved has been insufficient, and the absence of true environmental justice has left communities in Esmeraldas unprotected against the impacts of this disaster.
This spill is part of a long history of oil-related environmental contamination in Ecuador, where local communities have repeatedly suffered the consequences. Over the years, several spills have been documented in the SOTE pipeline system, raising serious concerns about its maintenance and oversight quality. Environmental organizations have also pointed to the lack of a proper regulatory framework to protect Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities, who are consistently the most affected.

3 potable water systems partially restored
a major oil spill (25,116 barrels of oil) occurred in Esmeraldas province due to a rupture in a pipeline of the Trans-Ecuadorian Oil Pipeline System (SOTE)
The oil spill initiated approximately 86 Km inland
contaminating several rivers and water sources
The impacts to the environment and natural reserves are vast and over 15 parishes are directly affected
in charge of SOTE management and operations
installing retaining walls and barriers to content the oil spill
it outpoured into the Esmeraldas River and eventually into the Pacific Ocean
there are specialised teams deployed in the affected areas to remove the crude oil spilled into the water and land
a retaining wall collapsed triggering state of disaster declaration at provincial level
the Government officially requested the UN Resident Coordinator the activation of the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) to support the response efforts and provide immediate assistance
a mission led by JEU and UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) and in coordination with UN Agencies
and other international and local organisations
Fondo Ecuatoriano Populorum Progressio (FEPP)
conducted a Rapid Needs Assessment (RNA) in 17 affected parishes
reaching 28 rural communities and 9 urban communities
Critical humanitarian needs identified and most affecting the population are WASH
health (including mental health) Child protection
Official results from the surveys conducted are being consolidated
The Humanitarian Community estimates that over 113,000 people are directly affected
out of them approximately 57,000 are women
and the limited access to or lack of safe drinking water
with critical consequences on public health
23 families – 48 persons in total – need shelter
and 1 school has been adopted as temporary shelter
The Government has already provided 2,400 cash vouchers to the most affected families
Internal displacement within the province has been identified due to the oil spill
31% of participants in the surveys reported that they had to flee their homes
and look for refugee with close family and acquaintances
poverty rates are high accounting for 56% of total population
while in Rioverde is particularly aggravated with 91% of people live in poverty conditions
Safe drinking water continues to be distributed by tanker trucks to the affected communities
4 cantons remain in state of emergency with provincial and local Emergency Operations Committees (COE) activated to aid with the implementation of water distribution plan with the support of the Ecuadorian Red Cross
while the Empresa Pública de Agua y Saneamiento Ambiental (EPMAPSE) continues restoring the potable water system in affected areas
and Atacames) remain with the potable water system partially restored
has no access to potable water since the system remain suspended
major gaps remain in water quality and service coverage
particularly in remote or peri-urban communities
and there are growing concerns about water safety
Over 3,500 people already need medical attention related to the oil spill
Reported symptoms linked to exposure to crude oil and hydrocarbons include dermatitis
There is also a reported increase in respiratory and gastrointestinal infections
Given the ongoing contamination of rivers and water supply systems
the risk of outbreaks of waterborne and vector-borne diseases
the Ministry of Health confirmed over 9,566 cases of dengue across the country
Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) is also critical to the most affected populations
It is important to note that most affected communities are located along the coast or riverbanks
where their traditional diet and daily protein intake primarily consist of fish and seafood
due to oil spills contaminating rivers and oceans
these sources of protein have become unsafe for consumption
leading to public health concerns and nutritional impacts
particularly affecting children under five
There is over 312 Ha of agricultural land affected
including 61 Ha completely lost; 9 beaches are contaminated
3 of them remain closed due to heavy crude oil contamination
are directly affected by the loss of income and livelihood
especially in fishing and agriculture sectors
The oil spill exacerbates an ongoing emergency caused by an intense and prolonged rainy season with severe flooding and landslides in Esmeraldas and other provinces of the coast
reaching over 125,000 people in need since January
This current situation is further aggravated by the security challenges in the province since it is one of the most affected by the ongoing armed violence crisis in the country
a significant oil spill in Esmeraldas province
caused by a landslide that ruptured the Transecuadorian Pipeline System (SOTE)
severely contaminated critical water sources
affecting beaches and disrupting local livelihoods
authorities declared a state of emergency in the cantons of Quinindé
imposing restrictions on access to water sources and contaminated coastal zones
The crisis has left 500,000 people across seven parishes without access to safe water and sanitation
heightening the risk of waterborne diseases and other health complications
Reported health concerns include respiratory issues
particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as children
the elderly and individuals with pre-existing conditions
The prolonged disruption of water services has exacerbated social tensions
with reports of threats against officials managing distribution efforts
Authorities have activated provincial and local Emergency Operations Committees (COEs) and launched water distribution plans in Esmeraldas
critical gaps in coverage and service quality persist
fueling public protests and exacerbating social unrest
Ongoing security challenges in Esmeraldas—one of the provinces most affected by the national security crisis— further complicate the response
while heavy rainfall continues to hinder relief efforts
an oil spill in Esmeraldas province—caused by a landslide rupturing the Transecuadorian Pipeline System (SOTE) — has severely contaminated key water bodies
authorities declared states of emergency in the cantons of Quinindé
restricting access to water and contaminated coastal areas
The crisis has left approximately 300,000 people without access to safe water and sanitation services
increasing the risk of waterborne diseases and other health complications
Reported health effects include respiratory problems
with vulnerable populations such as children
and individuals with pre-existing conditions at heightened risk
The prolonged disruption of water services has also led to growing tensions
including threats against officials managing distribution efforts
The Government has activated provincial and local Emergency Operations Committees (COEs) and implemented water distribution plans
significant gaps in coverage and service quality remain
prompting public protests and increasing social unrest
The situation is further exacerbated by ongoing security challenges in Esmeraldas
one of the provinces most affected by the national security crisis
while heavy rains continue to hinder response efforts
The province of Esmeraldas is experiencing widespread and pervasive violence marked by the constant movement of armed groups¹ into new areas of the region
This volatile environment of territorial conflict results in intermittent access for humanitarian actors and limits the population's access to basic goods and services
The low level of awareness and political will among institutionals to recognise the humanitarian and protection impacts of the violence restricts the population's access to essential basic services
including specliazed routes for addressing gender-based violence (GBV)
safe access to justice and complaint mechanisms and child protection
new phenomena such as internal displacement are becoming evident
Humanitarian organisations have identified several limitations to humanitarian access
primarily hostilities between armed groups for control over territories
There are also interferences in the implementation of humanitarian activities
mainly by armed groups that particularly restrict initiatives aimed at preventing recruitment
protection and promoting a culture of peace
The cantons most affected by these constraints are Esmeraldas
Armed groups also impose restrictions that obstruct the access of affected populations to essential services and assistance
The presence of invisible borders and the social and territorial control enforced by these groups severely restricts free movement and access to basic goods and services
The ongoing energy crisis in Ecuador aggravates the perception of insecurity (the streets are often dark) and further restricts humanitarian access
there are power outages of up to 16 hours a day
forcing the rescheduling of activities and limiting the provision of some services
adolescents and women are particularly vulnerability due to their high exposure to the risk of recruitment by armed groups
the risk of gender-based violence (GBV) and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV)
and limited access to education and training opportunities
People in situations of human mobility and LGBTQI+ groups also face high levels of vulnerability
discrimination and other abuses that severely compromise their rights and access to assistance
Areas exposed to both armed violence and natural hazards are of particular concern
the physical environment can be affected by landslides
frequent road disruptions and security restrictions
These conditions negatively impact humanitarian efforts
hinder the delivery of assistance and limit access and mobility for both the population and organizations responding to the emergency
Persons with disabilities are particularly vulnerable as spaces are inadequate for their mobility and access

With a career that began at the World Bank in Washington
Esmeralda Dikoume transitioned to a transformative role at UNICEF Cameroon as a field support officer
where her personal connection to the country deepened her commitment to humanitarian work
Esmeralda has a master's in public administration - international development from Cornell University and has always been passionate about climate change initiatives
Now growing into P3 level role in Mogadishu as the climate change and environment specialist
Esmeralda continues to harness her rich experiences to tackle pressing global challenges
In this spotlight interview with Juan Pendavis
we explore her experience in UNSSC’s JPO Career Booster Programme
Which aspect of the UNSSC JPO Career Booster Programme did you find most helpful
How has this contributed to your leadership development milestones
We all had such different experiences working in our different fields
this JPO career booster and how to transition from being a JPO but remain within the UN family
Being on that journey together and sitting in that room for a week
I created a WhatsApp group and we' are still all connected
we are all going to look back on this time and be able to
work together and leverage our network to see how we can help each other progress
The second thing was being able to hear from professionals and former JPOs
on the realities of what HR managers need to see from an external perspective made it easier for me when it came to the job application process and motivated me to include certain elements that I had not considered before
How has the programme given you the tools to further your career and perform within the UN system
The sessions had a good mix of introspective
Many young people may not have the time to do it or may not realize how important it is at this stage in our careers
The opportunity to sit with others facing similar challenges was invaluable
It helped me recognize that we need to align our personal motivations with the organization's goals
was the introspective sessions and the CV and cover letter workshops with Nancy Raphael
As I was interviewing and applying for positions
her perspective provided honest feedback on my writing
I shared my job success with her afterward
and how I found those workshops to be incredibly beneficial
What are some of the challenges you have faced in your work
and how has this training changed your perspective
some of us are fortunate to have a training budget
which provides a substantial amount of money to focus on our career and personal development
the reality is that many of us are quite busy and may not have the time to fully utilize these funds
Having a week dedicated to structured sessions geared towards career development was one of the best investments I made
It streamlined the decision-making process for identifying what I needed to elevate my leadership skills and advance my career
One of the main challenges we face is determining what type of programme we truly need
such as: What kind of programme will fulfil my needs as a young professional
This booster programme offers a solution to these uncertainties by providing a comprehensive package
The support helped me clarify my own needs; for instance
I have already signed up for career coaching sessions with UNSSC
Would you recommend this training programme to other junior professional officers and why
because it forces you to get out of your comfort zone
to get out of the country where you work and be in an environment where you're only with like- minded early professionals
There are no stupid questions in this sort of training
The instructors really push you to get out of your comfort zone and participate
If you are shy and maybe having a little bit of difficulty finding your people
I also definitely recommend this for people who want to excel in leadership
I am someone who loves to bring people together and loves to make people shine
and I think that's my best leadership quality
this is a great place because you have the opportunity to learn more about your leadership style
so that you too can take little bits and nuggets of knowledge
What message of inspiration do you have for all JPO Career Booster participants or alumni

DAZN was launched as a new streaming option for sports fans around the globe
and access to the FIFA Club World Cup have helped solidify its place as the largest global sports streamer
recognizing the growing demand for women’s sports
the platform has made a significant investment in this area
DAZN has adapted to shifting viewing trends by securing an extensive portfolio of media rights for women’s sports competitions
The streamer began investing in women’s soccer in 2021 with global rights to UEFA Champions League
This commitment allows it to offer unique methods of fan engagement
from live and prerecorded programming to interactive content that enhances the viewing experience
DAZN has demonstrated its dedication to fostering growth in this burgeoning sector of the sports industry
Esmeralda Negron discussed why the company decided to increase its investment
how it has maintained internal collaboration to market its efforts more effectively
how it has capitalized on the rise in popularity to better monetize its digital offerings
DAZN’s Esmeralda Negron: “Our free women’s-sport environment within DAZN [was launched] so that anyone around the world can watch women’s soccer as well as EuroLeague Women and volleyball
This was done to accelerate audience growth and
these leagues come with some of the biggest club brands in the world
We’ve also recently expanded beyond soccer and have begun partnering with other leagues outside of these sports
We recently announced a global partnership with EuroLeague Women
and we just announced a partnership with League One volleyball
which will be a global partnership as well
we launched our free women’s-sport environment within DAZN
We’re giving fans free access to women’s sports so that anyone around the world can watch women’s soccer as well as EuroLeague Women and volleyball
This was done in an effort to accelerate audience growth and ultimately
drive commercial success by working with brands and advertisers who want to reach these audiences
I think that’s the really special part about what we’re doing and the investment in women’s sports
We also launched a successful partnership with Visa
and we did this across the knockout rounds of Women’s Champions League last spring
a fan-engagement feature on the DAZN platform that allows fans to participate in community chats
This feature supports this aspiration to build fan communities
That was a big success for us: it had a 40% engagement rate
which was the highest Fan Zone engagement rate across any Fan Zone in both men’s and women’s sports
We also recently won an award at the World Media Awards for brand- and media-owner partnership
The partnership with Visa was a great opportunity to showcase what we can do with brands and partners that want to reach this audience and how we engage them in a meaningful and valuable way by creating great product experiences for them beyond the live match
Another highlight has been the expansion into other women’s sports
We realized that women’s sports are on a growth journey
we needed to partner and work collaboratively with leagues
Since we came on board to launch a dedicated women’s-sport vertical at DAZN
we’ve worked with publishers by sharing clips and collaborating with them on social media to get our women’s rights and our women’s sports out to more audiences
We’ve also collaborated with the clubs on social media to reach and engage their global fanbases
and we’ve aggregated club content on our platform to make it easy for fans to access behind-the-scenes content featuring their favorite players
with this collaborative approach and free access
our 2022 average view time for the final was about 30 minutes on the DAZN platform
the audience that we’ve attracted since launching the free offering watched an average of 70 minutes of the match
It’s exciting to see that we’ve been able to reach and engage new audiences as well as ones that are obviously big fans of the sport
Launching these additional features and this new experience unlocks opportunities to engage advertisers and sponsors with what we’re doing
we’ve had a betting company sponsor a poll to choose the top four men’s players in Fan Zone at the 80th minute
We’ve had Coca-Cola invest in alternative viewing experiences with influencers in Italy
By enhancing the product experience and engaging that younger generation
we create opportunities for sponsors to activate beyond traditional advertisement and broadcast sponsorship
These features allow brands to build brand affinity and engage fans in new and valuable ways
Our goal is continued growth in live-match viewership and in registrations on the DAZN platform
it’s continued improvement in the product on the field and in the match-day experience
It’s obvious that the broadcast looks so much better when the stadiums are filled
How can we work with the clubs or the teams within the leagues to support them in the best way we can to achieve that
Those are the goals that we are trying to achieve this year

Ecuador – April 2025 – Following the humanitarian and environmental crisis caused by the oil spill from the Trans-Ecuadorian Pipeline System (SOTE) on March 13 in Quinindé
emergency and solidarity protocols were activated across all Salesian presences in Ecuador
The University Pastoral Department at the Girón campus of the Salesian Polytechnic University (UPS) served as the donation collection center for the #UnidosPorEsmeraldas (#UnitedforEsmeraldas) campaign
a collaborator with the Technical Directorate of Pastoral Ministry
the response from all Salesian institutions
including UPS headquarters and regional centers
and university students mobilized to support those most affected
preparing emergency kits and donating bottled water
This wave of solidarity resulted in the dispatch of two trucks carrying 430 food kits
2,000 bottles of water (4 to 6 liters each)
The trucks arrived on April 8 and 9 at the Salesian community of “San Felipe Neri” in the Santa Marta neighborhood of Esmeraldas
Fifty university student volunteers supported the campaign by receiving donations
and coordinated by the Provincial Planning and Development Office
approximately $16,000 was raised to provide ongoing support for affected families
The #UnidosPorEsmeraldas campaign demonstrated the Salesian community’s capacity to respond to social crises with generosity and commitment
ANS - “Agenzia iNfo Salesiana” is a on-line almost daily publication

Edge Esmeralda gears up to take over Healdsburg again in early summer
When locals heard that Edge Esmeralda
a so-called “pop-up village,” would be coming to Healdsburg last year
Would tech-millionaires from the Silicon Valley be taking over the city
Would this be a miniature version of Solano County’s California Forever?
the movement was a conference of sorts — a really
really long conference attracting — by design — “people who believe the future can be better and are actively working to make it happen,” according to its website
from May 21 to June 24 with the promise to be bigger and better than before
Attendees — who must pay $2,485 plus hotel accommodations and meals for the monthlong experience — are promised the “healthiest
the conference has some tech elements: It is the brainchild of tech entrepreneur Devon Zuegel and pop-up village developer Timour Kosters
each of whom have broad backgrounds and business developments
Zuegel says Edge Esmeralda will serve as “a place for conversations and experiments on how to incorporate technology into our day-to-day in a way that enriches our lives
the whole point of technology and experimenting with new ideas is to improve the quality of life,“ Zuegel said
“Progress for the sake of progress doesn’t make sense
Technology … should help lift up everybody and actually allow us to be more connected to family and friends.”
While technology is a thread throughout the conference
Its agenda loosely mirrors the educational experiences Zuegel gained as a child while attending New York’s Chautauqua Institution
The institution is a 750-acre community on Chautauqua Lake where roughly 7,500 people go every summer for nine weeks
“Chautauqua mixes the charm and close-knit
multigenerational community of a small town like Cloverdale or Healdsburg with world-class programming and events
which brings people closer to their neighbors and community,” Zuegel said
Edge Esmeralda can be thought of as Chautauqua with a California twist
Attendees will focus on learning about the latest in artificial intelligence
renewable energy and biotech in between bike rides
locally-sourced meals at Healdsburg restaurants
We provide infrastructure for you to be productive
whether you need a day of focus or want to run a retreat for your team or in a specific topic area,” Zuegel writes
Weekends are for more intense “unconferences,” where people can learn from experts about aerospace
decentralized technology (think: crypto) and renewable energy … at their leisure
with the intention of bringing together the Edge Esmeralda folks with Healdsburg locals
The group hopes to engage more than just local restaurants this year
Healdsburg downtown business owners and local residents reported little evidence of the group’s involvement in the town
Most of the conference revolved around Healdsburg’s Hotel Trio
The hotel was transformed into an energetic boutique that radiated with high-functioning players from around the world
there’s a bigger push to get Sonoma County residents to join the crowd
“We are excited for all locals to be involved,” Zuegel said
“We especially want to welcome young families
and to collaborate with local artists and small businesses
The conference is offering free tickets to locals who host a visiting scholar in their home
“One of our big goals for Edge Esmeralda is to make it accessible for people in all stages of life and levels of wealth,” Zuegel said
which makes it one of our biggest challenges in achieving that goal of inclusivity.”
That’s part of Zuegel’s end game, after all. She is eyeing the purchase of a 266-acre site long known in Cloverdale as the Alexander Valley Resort property to become the permanent home of Esmeralda
a multigenerational village that would blend housing and hospitality with the seasonal seminars and learning that’s being offered this summer in Healdsburg
“We are making great progress,” Zuegel said
“We have been busy doing diligence on the property to understand the land
the community and what is economically feasible
We still have a lot of work to do and many community discussions ahead of us
and we are excited to see how the plans evolve as we engage more with the community over the coming years.”

(FOX26) — Assemblywoman Esmeralda Soria officially announced she is running for California’s 14th State Senate District
to solve the problems that have frustrated Central Valley families and small businesses for too long
from protecting Madera Community Hospital to voting against increases on gas prices and delivering millions for affordable housing,” said Assemblywoman Esmeralda Soria
and I have spent my entire career fighting for our working families
She currently serves in the 27th Assembly District
The 14th District is currently held by Democrat Senator Anna Caballero
Assemblywoman Soria previously served as a member of the Fresno City Council from 2015 to 2022
where she served as the president of the council
Soria enters the race with an endorsement from Sen
“Esmeralda Soria is the fighter that the Central Valley needs in the Senate," said Sen
she’s proven that she can bring resources home
Esmeralda Morales arrived in Bozeman with high expectations
but she is passing them with flying colors during the 2024-25 season for Montana State University women's basketball
Morales transferred to MSU with one year of eligibility remaining and hoping to make an instant impact for the Bobcats
I felt comfortable and complacent of where I was at
and I felt like I needed to go somewhere where they're going to challenge me," Morales said
Head coach Tricia Binford believed Morales filled a key role for the Bobcats following an injury-plagued 2023-24 season
including last in the Big Sky in field goal and 3-point percentage
Morales led the Big Sky Conference in scoring in the 2023-24 season
averaging 16.5 points per game and bringing some much needed firepower to the Bobcats
despite history of Morales coming up big against Montana State
This includes the 2023 Big Sky Conference Tournament as Morales and the Vikings ended the Bobcats' season with a quarterfinal upset
'I can't believe you're here with us
you kicked us out of the first game,' but I'm happy to be here," Morales said
'I'm so happy you're here,' and I'm blessed to be a part of this program for my last year."
'I haven't found out how to guard you
so I love to talk to you about possibly being on this team,'" Binford said
"Our defense was keeping us in games last year
which is why we finished with a winning record
but we were having a hard time putting points on the board."
and it's been big for us as far as putting points on the board," she added
It didn't take long Morales to find her mark on the team
including 36.1% from 3-point range and 88.6% from the free throw line
in a team-high average of 29.6 minutes per game
Her current 35-straight made free throws is an MSU record
But Morales isn't only playing at a high level
she's even raising the level of her teammates as the point guard
Outside of averaging 2.9 rebounds per game
she is also averaging a career-best 3.7 assists per game and is the most on the Bobcats
Morales helped Montana State jump from 58.7 points per game in 2023-24 to 72.4 points per game for second in the Big Sky
"That was the biggest thing in the beginning was how can I still be a good point guard and a good teammate
be the same player that they expect me to be coming into this year," Morales said
that's when the team is going to follow you,' and I'm just having fun."
"Part of it is how do you make this work with somebody who is so dynamic as a scorer with a lot of weapons around her," Binford said
"There was some of the early games where you can see that balance shining and there were some games where we needed to get Esme more shots."
But while Morales is a great all-around scorer
she came to Montana State wanting to grow defensively
She quickly learned Binford's system and contributes with 1.9 steals per game
for not only the top defense in the Big Sky Conference
but a defense that is first in the nation in steals per game (14.6) and seventh in forced turnovers per game (24.1)
"When we ask her to do something or teach her something the first time
She just has that unique savviness about her that's pretty remarkable."
Morales is helping the MSU program reach new heights
The Bobcats are on an 18-game winning streak
which is the longest in a single-season and tied for most all-time in program history
as they are also currently undefeated in Big Sky play
One of those wins was an 85-39 victory at Morales' old stomping grounds in Portland State
"It didn't hit me until we were driving in downtown Portland
and all my memories and emotions came back practicing there
"I'm happy that my family was able to go there
but we got the win and that's what we needed to do."
While Morales is enjoying her time in the Gallatin Valley
both her and Binford believe this won't be the last stop in basketball career as she looks to pursue a career at the professional level
"I've played in the WNBA and every general manager in the WNBA needs to just watch her game against Montana at home
and any particular game of hers in general and just give her a shot at training camp," Binford said
"What makes her at that next level so great for a kid in a training camp in the WNBA is this kid is an incredible teammate that brings out the best of everybody around her."
If you watch her 1-on-1 and how she is intentional of ways of bringing out the people around her and the steadiness that she brings
You can go ask any kid on our roster about their respect for her as a leader
but every single one of her teammates knows she's invested in them as well."
But before Morales can think about the future
she's focused on what's in front of her
She's soaking up the memories of this stellar 2024-25 season as Morales looks to push MSU towards a Big Sky Conference title and NCAA tournament berth
The Bobcats round out the regular season with three games over five days
including her last two chances to play in the Brick in front of Bobcat Nation
and the community is just my second home," Morales said
"They just opened me with open arms and just to be blessed to be a part of this program
I'm grateful that I was able to here for my last year."
15-0 in Big Sky) have a chance to clinch the longest winning streak in program history and at least a share of the Big Sky regular season title against the Morales' former team in Portland State (4-20
