LOCK HAVEN — As Lewisburg junior Baylee Espinosa was within the final 20 meters of the finish line in the 1,600 on Saturday at the Lock Haven High School Classic
the Green Dragon saw the time on the clock
Each second seemed to drag on as she got closer and closer: 4:51.00 … 4:52.00 … 4:53.00…
Espinosa thought she was going to finally break her mother’s long-time record at Lewisburg which has stood since 2003
But that digit changed as she crossed the finish line
and Espinosa came just shy of making school history
“As I crossed the (finish) line I was like ‘I’m gonna get it
I’m gonna get it’ and then I saw the clock change and I was like ‘ahh
there’s no way,'” Espinosa said with a laugh
Espinosa ran a time of 4:54.79 on Saturday in the 1,600 and while it didn’t break the school record
it did set a meet record for the Lock Haven High School Classic
“To set the meet record here in my first year here
She knows she’s only a junior and has a lot more track to run to chase the mark of Ashleigh Wetzel
who would go on to run track and field at Vanderbilt after competing at Lewisburg in high school
that was really frustrating,” Espinosa said of the time
“I just saw it and I was like ‘it’s going to be a measly point of a second,’ but that’s OK.”
Espinosa is glad to be back on the track and continuing to drop significant time meet after meet
Espinosa faced some adversity battling anemia and tendonitis and had to build up from the beginning of the season
She started the seeing running the 1,600 with a time in the 5:50s
and she’s dropped a minute off her time and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down either
“Usually indoor season I’m at the height of my peak
but coming into the season and slowly building
I was making these huge jumps,” Espinosa said
It made me believe that it’s possible that I could have another big jump today.”
She did precisely that by running a 4:54.79
Espinosa has beaten every record her mom set at Lewisburg except for the 1,600 and it’s something the two joke about routinely
“I have her record in everything else
but in the mile she’s like ‘I still got you’ and it’s like ‘for now,” Espinosa said with a smile
“She knows I’ve been coming for her for a while
but had some unfortunate illnesses at the end of the year
I thought I was going to get it this year.”
Espinosa noted that she entered the event with some nerves
Some of that can be chalked up to competing at the Lock Haven High School Classic for the first time in her career and running on the track for the first time ever
“I think there was a lot going into the day
I didn’t feel almost in the right mindset because I compared myself a lot to others and got into a negative headspace,” Espinosa said
I looked around and saw the trees and said no matter what happens today
it’s still going to be a great day and memorable.”
Setting a meet record was definitely a memorable day for the Green Dragon
running a sub-5 minute time on a chilly and rainy afternoon at Lock Haven on Saturday helped boost Espinosa’s confidence as the district championships are on the horizon
“It gives me quite a bit of confidence
… The mile’s one event I crown as it’s just so perfect and great,” Espinosa said
“The last few times I ran it were unfortunate situations for me
but I’m hoping I can come in and do right things I need to do and go out there (and win).”

Mariola Espinosa, associate professor of history, was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant, the nation’s most prestigious humanities scholarship.
the NEH awarded $22.6 million to 219 humanities projects nationwide
NEH has funded more than $6.4 billion to more than 70,000 projects in all 50 states
Espinosa received one of 78 NEH fellowships awarded this year to support advanced research and writing projects by humanities scholars
Espinosa will use her $60,000 award to research and write a book chronicling the development of medicine in Puerto Rico.
“This award means that others find my ideas and work on the history of medicine in Puerto Rico valuable and important,” Espinosa says
and this project has always been somewhat personal since it is taking me back to study something about my home
Some of the people I find in my sources are people who I have heard about through family stories.”
Espinosa’s project looks at the medical professional and popular reactions to a new therapy technique
which became popular in Spanish-speaking countries in 1929.
“Asuerotherapy claimed to cure all kinds of ailments
began using the controversial method to treat their patients,” Espinosa says
“Many prominent Puerto Rican doctors claimed that they could provide unprecedented relief using this technique
Others argued that these practitioners were exploiting public credulity and making a mockery of the medical profession
documents how Puerto Rican doctors addressed the controversy by defining the relationship between scientific knowledge
Espinosa previously received an NEH Summer Stipend
a UI International Programs Summer Research Fellowship
and a UI Arts and Humanities Initiative Award that have allowed her to develop her book topic and complete research in archives and collections in Puerto Rico
She has also recently received P3 Post-tenure Faculty Support from the Provost’s Office for this project. With the NEH award
she will take the time to finish a draft of the book.
Espinosa came to the UI in fall 2013.

talk to SHIFTER about working with Tyler Perry to bring their labor of love
After Barbie and Oppenheimer went head-to-head in 2024
this year marked another highly competitive awards season with Anora
and Emilia Pérez competing in many categories
But one of the films which slipped under the radar this awards season was The Six Triple Eight
which tells the real life story of 855 Black women who served in the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion of the US Women’s Army Corps during World War II
To fix the three-year backlog of undelivered mail
Despite only garnering one nomination at the major awards ceremonies for Best Original Song for “The Journey”
the film is easily the best work of Tyler Perry’s career so far
While Perry is deserving of praise for bringing this movie to screen
work on the film began years earlier with journalist turned tech entrepreneur and producer
who is no stranger to undercovering a good story
Years before stepping into the world of film producing
she was an Emmy-winning television producer in Los Angeles covering all the major award shows
Little did she know that this would be a harbinger of things to come
She would eventually pivot into tech and ecommerce
a member-only shopping website offering flash-sales and limited-time sale events
HauteLook would be acquired by retail juggernaut Nordstrom
She would then co-found the design-based search engine
but the company proved to be ahead of its time
But it would be her next pivot that would bring her career full circle
What would ultimately lead Espinosa to grace the biggest red carpets in the world wouldn’t be her passions for journalism and fashion
It was through her love of World War II history that she first stumbled onto the story about the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion
“When I first read the soon to be published article about the Six Triple Eight
it was unfathomable to me that such a remarkable story
“This was a vital piece of history that deserved to be celebrated and remembered
I knew I had to bring this story to light.”
She was immediately hooked and knew this story needed to be brought to the big screen
There was only one person who she trusted to help make that happen
Selig has worked as an executive at a number of major studios
She also has over 20 producer credits to her name and another 20 as an executive
she bet on herself and founded Intuition Productions
a feature film and television production company
Espinosa and Selig would embark on a three year journey to bring this film to life
The duo would spend the first year developing the project
“After I secured the rights to the article
Keri and I embarked on our journey to uncover the stories of the remaining survivors of the 6888th”
“We traveled across the country at the height of the pandemic
It was truly such an honor to meet and listen to these remarkable women talk about their time in the Army over eighty years ago
how to locate Corporate Lena Derriecott Bell King (played by Ebony Obsidian)
especially after having been scammed in the past
the challenge of making this film while King was still alive and able to help ensure the story was told well
A breakthrough would come when Master Sergeant Elizabeth Anne Helm-Frazier would introduce them to the then 99-year-old Mrs
After a number of visits and building trust
It became more of a personal thing than a business thing”
With King involved and ready to tell her story
there was only one thing left to do—sell it
Espinosa and Selig put together a three act motion picture caliber sizzle reel that would eventually sell legendary songwriter
to write the Oscar-nominated song “The Journey” before the film was even made
It would also be instrumental in selling the film to the cast and Tyler Perry himself
After receiving the reel from producer Nicole Avant
called me and Carlota and said that he had to pull over; that it was like the women were in his back seat
The women were immediately a part of his life”
But Espinosa and Selig wouldn’t meet the film and TV mogul in-person for the first time until the day he met Mrs
The years ahead would include stopping their lives and moving to Atlanta
Perry pulled out all the stops in order to tell the story well
Perry opted to use 800 extras on the very streets where the women once served
After finding a New York Times article about World War II letters
Perry had his team hand write every letter that appears in the film
they bought a treasure trove of World World II memorabilia
and among the trucks was a locker that was once owned by Charity Adams
it was important to do the women’s stories justice
“It was one of the greatest honours of his life”
King was able to finally see the culmination of three years of hard work as Perry sat by her bedside with an iPad to show her a cut of the movie
Espinosa and Selig had also shown King videos from the film set
including the dance scene where she fondly remembered dancing to the jitterbug
King as she relived the dance scene from the film was a profound moment for me”
and I could see her transported back in time
Despite their long list of career accomplishments
making The Six Triple Eight and helping to bring the women’s stories to life
“It was an incredible honor to do this outside of the system
“We were kind of left alone to make the kind of movie we wanted to make
It was a rare occurrence…You always set out to do a great pic
but this one was different because we had a real person we were indebted to
We wanted to make sure we made her proud.”
The Six Triple Eight is available to stream now on Netflix

I’ve had many a discussion over the years about what it means when a company does its trade show booth right
and I’m still not quite sure there is a perfect answer
A lot of it has to do with the size of the booth
and those intangibles that get described as the vibe
the current incarnation of Espinosa Premium Cigars’ booth seems to do it right
has the big logoed signage hanging from the ceiling of the hall
presents the company’s existing lines without them clogging up space
and offers plenty of seating so that those orders can get written up
but I certainly like what Espinosa’s got going on
as the company has six offerings on display; two of which are new Warhead releases
two of which are what are being called Warhead “re-ups,” while the other two are new cigars for Guy Fieri’s Knuckle Sandwich brand
601 La Bomba Warhead 1 Re-Up
Espinosa is bringing back two of its most popular Warhead releases for what is being called a Re-Up
essentially a re-release of the cigar in its original size and blend
but with a modified name—the Roman numerals are gone and replaced with Arabic numerals
and the packaging gets a significant upgrade
The “boxes” are shaped like a bomb that the company says stays true to the line’s military-inspired presentation
It’s an aluminum/metallic body with a detachable head
The company said that the first Warhead “quickly made a name for itself with full-bodied strength
and an aggressive flavor profile,” which is why it was a choice for the first batch of Re-Ups
601 La Bomba Warhead 6 Re-Up
Described as “the most complete Warhead to date,” the Warhead VI was another easy choice for a re-up
It’s a box-pressed figurado that originally came out in 2020
and while its blend is the same on paper as the Warhead 1
this particular blend focused on balance as much as it did on the signature strength that the line is known for
601 La Bomba Warhead 11
The Warhead series is getting a lot of attention this year with several releases
The first is the 11th extension to the nearly annual series that debuted in 2013
and the company is bringing some firsts to this release
an oval figurado that was selected to amplify the blend’s strength and complexity
The packaging also takes a big step forward
and the cigars placed inside the body of the bomb
The company hasn’t confirmed the final production numbers
Production: 4,000 Boxes of 10 Cigars (40,000 Total Cigars)
601 La Bomba The Warhead: Independence Day
This new installment to the Warhead line is designed to be more than just a cigar
with the company calling it a statement of growth and appreciation
one that stretches the creative bounds of the Warhead line while honoring its identity
It’s made at the San Lotano Factory in Ocotal
Nicaragua and should be shipping by the end of May
Production: 2,500 Boxes of 10 Cigars (25,000 Total Cigars)
Knuckle Sandwich Chef Special 2025
with a new blend that pushes the line into some new territory
we kept things very approachable,” said Alfonso Sr
via a press release “But with last year’s broadleaf and now this Brazilian mata fina
This year’s blend has a richness we know our fans will love.”a
Production: 2,000 Boxes of 10 Cigars (20,000 Total Cigars)
Knuckle Sandwich Puro Nicaragua
The newest core line in the Knuckle Sandwich portfolio is all-Nicaraguan and made in Nicaragua at the San Lotano Factory in Ocotal
The cigars come dressed in a dark color scheme
silver and red bands with a silver foot ribbon
Maduro and Connecticut as the core lines in the portfolio
I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories
it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it
the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together

Right-hander Taylor Jordan made it through four innings Sunday but then was pulled from game. The bullpen was unable to keep the game within reach and the Padres defeated the Nationals 4-2
Manager Matt Williams said Jordan had been feeling under the weather since late last night
"He showed up this morning running a fever," Williams said
There was some question as to whether he would even start
But we gave him a bag of fluids and he ate something this morning
Jordan was sitting down with his head in his hands as reporters arrived for postgame interviews
He had his red Washington Nationals hoodie pulled up over his head
"I have had this headache since early this morning," Jordan said
But Jordan said he was able to battle through as best he could
He limited the Padres to one run and three hits
I wasn't really focused on much besides getting a couple of outs."
Jordan said the pain in his head was moving around and he was in obvious discomfort
"(Now) it was starting to go back towards the back
It wasn't like totally unbearable or anything
Second baseman Danny Espinosa was hit by a pitch on his right knee in the second inning and stayed in the game for two more innings
Williams decided he had seen enough of Jordan and Espinosa
"He took the ball off the kneecap," Williams said of Espinosa
And his spot was the spot when we had to get Taylor out of there
Taylor would not have been able to go any further
So I figured we would double-switch there."
Espinosa showed his knee to reporters after the game
The knee also showed the stitches from the baseball where Padres starter Ian Kennedy hit him with the pitch
but welcomes the scheduled off-day before the Nats start a two-game series in Houston
After Jordan departed, the Nationals bullpen provided an uneven performance, starting with left-hander Ross Detwiler
who allowed three runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings and took the loss
"I couldn't throw a strike," Detwiler said
"It is something you are out there you have make an adjustment
It just didn't translate over to the game."
Williams needed Detwiler to eat up innings
"We try to get him in situations where he can go one plus (innings)
"We will look to get him I there more often
we will see if we can get him in there more lefty-lefty matchup
It was very uncharacteristic to see reliever Aaron Barrett come into a game in the sixth and walk two batters
so the walks scored two runs for San Diego
"We had an opportunity tie the ball game up
Barrett believes he has found the mechanical issue that might have caused him problems during Sunday's outing
Barrett faced four batters and three of them reached base
"My leg drive was going forward before my arm had a chance to even catch up
no matter what you do mechanically or mentally
physically you got to find a way to get guys out and I didn't do that today."
Barrett said it is not easy to try to correct a mechanical issue with his delivery in the middle of the game
I had an opportunity to leave those guys there
But I just got to keep getting better and get them next time."
The Leyte Provincial Police Office said that charges of illegal possession of firearms and violation of the election gun ban were filed against the seven policemen tagged in the shooting of Albuera mayoral candidate Kerwin Espinosa
Provincial director Police Colonel Dionisio Apas Jr
said that some of the 14 firearms they recovered from the policemen were unregistered
itong pitong persons of interest…sila ay nasa administrative custody considering na may isinampa ng complaint sa kanila
So they will undergo administrative proceedings,” said Apas at a press conference on Tuesday
these persons of interest are under administrative custody considering that there are already complaints filed against them
so they will undergo administrative proceedings.)
While he did not identify the seven cops being linked to the case
the Leyte provincial police chief said the persons of interest include a police colonel
“Persons of interest considering na hindi pa naman sila considered as suspects
So we are still in the process of ascertaining if meron silang particular involvement doon sa particular incident
That is basically the reason why ang initially finile natin ay yung pertaining sa gun ban violation,” he said
(They are still considered as persons of interest because they cannot be deemed yet as suspects
So we are still in the process of knowing if they have particular involvement in the particular incident.)
the Leyte police said that the seven persons of interest all got negative results in the paraffin test
“Based doon sa ni-request natin na forensic exam
it appears doon sa pito na persons of interest natin
lahat po ng 14 na firearms,” said Apas
But Police Lieutenant Colonel Vivien Malibago
said that a negative result was not conclusive
“I just want to clarify that the paraffin examination is not a conclusive examination
It does not mean that a negative result conclusively hindi nag-fire yung tao ng firearms,” she said in the press conference
Malibago added that among the factors that could affect the results of the paraffin test are the wearing of gloves
Espinosa was at a campaign event on April 10 when an unidentified man hiding in the ceiling of the stage shot him from behind using an undetermined firearm
He sustained a wound on the right shoulder
Also hurt from the incident were his sibling and a minor
Espinosa has alleged that the attack was politically motivated

Fans of Espinosa Premium Cigars’ 601 La Bomba Warhead line have gotten some good news, as the company has announced that it is re-upping two of the previous releases, the very first Warhead that was released in 2013, and the Warhead VI
The company says that these are among the most requested releases in the history of the line
“Our fans have been asking for this for years,” said Erik Espinosa Jr.
and Warhead 6 is widely considered the best weʼve ever done
Bringing them back in the Re-Up Series is our way of honoring the legacy and delivering exactly what our supporters have been asking for.”
One change that fans of the line will immediately notice is a shift from the use of Roman numerals to Arabic ones; for instance
the re-upped Warhead VI is now the Warhead 6
they retain the same size and blend info of the originals
The Warhead 1 is a 6 1/2 x 54 box-pressed toro that uses a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and filler
The company said that the first Warhead “quickly made a name for itself with full-bodied strength
The Warhead 6 is a 5 x 58 semi-pressed perfecto that also uses a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and filler
The company notes that this cigar was notable for its balanced blend
which earned it a reputation of being the most complete Warhead to date
“Re-Up isnʼt just about nostalgia,” said Hector Alfonso Sr.
master blender for Espinosa Premium Cigars
“Itʼs about recognizing what made these cigars great and delivering that same experience again; bold
Both cigars come in new packaging that the company showed off for the recently announced Warhead 11
with the boxes shaped like a bomb that the company says stays true to the line’s military-inspired presentation
is described as an aluminum/metallic body with a detachable head
Both the Warhead 1 and Warhead 6 are priced at $15 per cigar and $150 per box of 10
with 1,500 boxes of each produced by the San Lotano Factory in Ocotal
The announcement puts an end to weeks of speculation over who would take the reins at Japan’s third-largest carmaker

Espinosa Premium Cigars is expanding its 601 La Bomba Warhead series with a special addition called The Warhead: Independence Day
a box-pressed 6 1/2 x 55 toro dressed in a red
white and blue color scheme that draws on the American flag
has been created as a promotional item to reward loyal customers and deepen engagement within the Espinosa brand
The blend is new and distinct from all previous Warhead releases
with a dark Ecuadorian mauro wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and filler
The company says the tobaccos were selected for their strength
with the intent of creating something more than just a cigar
but something that is a statement of growth and appreciation
”We wanted to create something not only special but different for our loyal customers,” said Erik Espinosa
“It’s a cigar that rewards loyalty and sparks curiosity.”
The cigars are made at the San Lotano Factory in Ocotal
with production limited to 2,500 boxes of 10 cigars
Pricing is set at $18 per cigar and $180 per box
“This project allowed us to stretch the creative bounds of the Warhead line while honoring its identity,” said Hector Alfonso Sr.
The 601 La Bomba The Warhead: Independence Day will be featured at the 2025 PCA Convention & Trade Show
The cigars are expected to begin shipping in late May

Leyte mayoral candidate Kerwin Espinosa has filed frustrated murder complaints against 7 cops he believes were behind the attack against him earlier this month
The charges were filed against 7 cops from Ormoc City as he claimed in his complaint-affidavit that the shooting incident was "politically motivated."
The complaint was filed at the Office of the Provincial Prosecutor in Baybay City
Espinosa was wounded in the shooting incident which took place during a campaign sortie in Barangay Tabgas last April 10
Espinosa was waiting for his turn to speak when an unidentified man “hiding in the ceiling of the stage shot the victim from behind using an undetermined firearm.”
Also wounded were candidates for vice mayor Mariel Espinosa Marinay and a minor
The Leyte Provincial Police Office has filed charges of illegal possession of firearms and violation of the election gun ban against seven policemen tagged in Espinosa's shooting
The Philippine National Police (PNP) said the cops were found inside a compound where the suspected getaway vehicle proceeded amid a hot pursuit operation
who are assigned at the Ormoc City Police Station
while the five others are non-commissioned officers
The PNP, meanwhile, has relieved the head of the Ormoc City Police Chief Colonel Reydante Ariza amid the ongoing investigation. —VAL

Espinosa appears on the latest episode of Bobby Steggert's Quiet Part Out Loud podcast.
Eden Espinosa is reflecting on her "emotional" journey with Lempicka, encouraging performers to advocate for themselves. Nearly a year after the musical's short-lived run on Broadway, the actress opened up to Bobby Steggert on his Quiet Part Out Loud podcast about the demands of the titular role.
"I was literally a shell of a human on that stage," she revealed. "I hate to say this, but I would not have made it any longer than that. Like it was not meant to run that long. No one person was meant to do what I was doing in that role because I was afraid to say no.”
Espinosa received rave reviews for her performance, garnering a Tony Award nomination. However, she revealed to Steggert that she wished she had advocated for herself during the process, holding back due to scarcity of leading roles in musicals for women her age. She shares that she has "so much compassion for the desperation and the lack of advocacy for ourselves."
"It's wild to me now that I've looked back and go, 'Oh my God,' just so many things with my journey of Lempicka, just not advocating for myself because this is it. There's not roles like this for women my age. I spent this many years developing this character – when's my next one gonna be? When I'm 60?"
After years of developing the role and two out-of-town tryouts before Broadway, Espinosa now looks back on the thought of possibly stepping away from the role as it continued to evolve.
"When something develops over time and you might not necessarily agree with the way that it's going, so fear of stepping away from it and going, 'I love you guys and I love this. I just don't think that this is the character that we originally signed on for and I wish you the best and I'm going to step away.' That takes a lot of balls and a lot of self-awareness and power. I want everybody to have that in their life.”
When asked if she wished she had stepped away from the production, the former Wicked star reveals that she didn't have these thoughts "in real time."
"In hindsight, I'm like, 'Oh my God, I was in fight or flight the entire time.' So not aware," she reveals. "I have learned the lesson of just the only person that matters in this instance is me at the moment. If it's not in alignment with my core values, it's not in alignment with my nervous system, if it's not in alignment with my wellbeing, then the answer is no."
Lempicka celebrated the true story of renowned artist Tamara de Lempicka. Spanning decades of political and personal turmoil and told through a thrilling, pop-infused score, the musical boldly explored the contradictions of a world in crisis, a woman ahead of her era, and an artist whose time has finally come.
The production opened on April 14, 2024, closing on May 19, following 27 previews and 41 regular performances at the Longacre Theatre.

Struggling Nissan is set to make a fresh start with a leadership change to replace CEO Makoto Uchida next month
Nissan announced Tuesday that Chief Planning Officer Ivan Espinosa will be assuming the role starting in April in a bid to turn around the Yokohama-based automaker.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
All eyes are on how the new Mexican chief will plot a rebound and whether he will revive the recently failed megamerger talks with Honda under Uchida's leadership

Veteran Ivan Espinosa knows the challenges ahead and is ready to tackle them
Alisa PriddleWriterApr 01
Today is Ivan Espinosa’s first day in the top job and he is acutely aware of the challenges ahead of him
a Nissan veteran whose most recent job was global chief planning officer
takes over from Makota Uchida who announced his pending resignation in March after talks to merge with Honda fell apart
various names were floated as likely successors
He was as surprised as the rest of the industry when he got the tap
the native of Mexico City thought he might be in line for consideration next time around
But of one thing he was certain: Nissan is not dead yet and Espinosa was getting tired of reading all the negative coverage
including dramatic accounts of the automaker’s imminent demise in the wake of poor earnings and failed merger talks
It prompted an event where media were invited to Yokohama
to show what Nissan is capable of and what is in the works
The beauty of Espinosa in the top spot is he is not an outsider being brought in to fix things
chief planning officer for Nissan in the Americas
Espinosa is a mechanical engineer who has been with Nissan since 2003 in a variety of strategy and planning jobs
Espinosa wants to get the company back on course and is prepared to make the necessary fundamental changes
There are new vehicles in the pipeline
Nissan is reducing the time it takes to develop new vehicles
from 55 months to 37 months for an all-new model
and 30 months for subsequent models on the same platform
Executives are quick to acknowledge the focus on pure EVs for the region and eschewing hybrids made sense during the pandemic when vehicle prices were high
but it proved to be a miscalculation that has come back to bite them
where the internal combustion engine acts as a generator
debut in the fourth-generation Rogue in 2027
the Rogue will get the plug-in hybrid system from Alliance partner Mitsubishi and other vehicles could adopt that system in the future
More clarity on emissions compliance regulations in the U.S
will help determine the best powertrain for each model going forward
Nissan knows it can’t have big vehicles with V-8 engines and buy credits for compliance
especially as there are increasingly fewer greenhouse gas credits for sale
The automaker needs self-reliance with a balanced portfolio
The company will only keep investing in internal combustion engines that contribute to electrification as part of a hybrid system
The Leaf was a pioneer in the EV space when it debuted back in 2010
but has been all but left behind as the rest of the industry caught up and surpassed Nissan with EVs of their own
Sports cars will remain part of the lineup. Names like Z and GT-R are not going away
Future vehicles fall under three categories: key brand-oriented, globally recognized signature nameplates like Patrol, mainstream core regional vehicles like Pathfinder in the U.S. or Micra in Europe
and a greater emphasis on and investment in the U.S.
whose engineering and design operations have been alternately sidelined and brought back to the table by Nissan's Japanese headquarters over the years
businesses—see: Honda and Toyota—have enjoyed more consistent autonomy
isn't the only reason behind the renewed regional focus; sales have fallen off in China
developing eight new electric models in China for that market by the end of 2026 and hedging the risk with plans to export them to other countries
The new models start with the N7 electric sedan that will be shown this month at the Shanghai auto show
Mexico is also a key market with its production hub and almost 20 percent market share
in red) with the new e-Power hybrid system
The new CEO sees potential in a revived Infiniti and has no plans to drop the luxury brand, which is why it invested in a new QX80 flagship, the new Infiniti QX65
and an electric crossover to be built in Canton
Infiniti can share platforms and powertrains with Nissan models
but the luxury vehicles cannot be warmed-over Nissans in terms of design and the retail customer experience
Espinosa also knows he needs to address cost
on the management side as well as production
He will work to reduce fixed costs and concentrate on generating revenue
He insists Nissan does not have a cash problem
with more than 1 trillion yen ($6.7 billion) in cash
but it does need to work on free cash flow generation
it needs to be making more than it is spending
Nissan has gone from being a 5.8-million-unit company in 2018 to 3.5 million units a year
Espinosa says he is proud of the cars Nissan has to offer and is eager to take the company forward. The heart of Nissan is still beating, Espinosa says. It is a great moment to charge ahead with a new team and clear strategy to turn things around and keep the momentum going.

Mexican Iván Espinosa will become CEO of Nissan Global as of April 1
at a critical moment for the automotive sector
He will take the reins of the Japanese company's operations
which is facing major financial challenges
the still director of Product Planning at Nissan Mexicana was assigned the CEO and president of Nissan Global
for which he pledged to work to “bring stability and growth to the Japanese company,” which is mired in serious financial problems
Since last year it has been announced that the automaker would enter a bankruptcy crisis and analysts project that it has less than a year to correct some financial failures
so it had sought alliances with Honda and in recent days with Tesla
confirmed -a few days ago- his intention to lay off at least 9,000 employees worldwide and reduce the brand's global production rate by 20 percent
The possible bankruptcy of Nissan threatens to cut the salaries of all members of senior management
the launch of new models will be postponed and about 10.02% of Nissan's shares in Mitsubishi will be sold
During the announcement of the Mexican as the new head of Nissan
he was asked about his plans and although he avoided going into details -according to international news agencies-
Espinosa responded that Nissan is strengthening its production lines in the United States and polishing its partnership with the Chinese automaker Dongfeng
so that “new news on this matter will be announced soon”
It is also mentioned that Japanese authorities are pressuring Nissan to resume its alliance with Honda
There are estimates that the third largest Japanese automaker estimates net losses of 80 billion yen (about 498 million euros)
Iván Espinosa holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM)

– A woman was arrested Thursday after police said she attacked her 81-year-old mother inside a room at HCA Florida Aventura Hospital back in February
Leer en español
Aventura police said they responded to the hospital
after a reported domestic battery involving an elderly patient who was admitted for medical treatment
became angry during a conversation about finances
according to an arrest report obtained by Local 10 News on Friday
The victim said Espinosa asked for her checkbook and information about direct deposits
the daughter allegedly grabbed her by the upper chest
left shoulder and arm before punching her in the chest
Police said victim screamed for help after the alleged attack
prompting a registered nurse to enter the room
The nurse said she found Espinosa hiding in the bathroom with the lights off
She was asked to leave the hospital and complied
Investigators said they photographed a large bruise on the victim’s upper left arm near her armpit and shoulder
which hospital staff said had not been previously visible
Authorities said they interviewed Rosemary Espinosa at the Aventura Police Department on Tuesday
she waived her Miranda rights and admitted to being upset with her mother over a bank account issue but denied hitting her
She told police she hid in the bathroom to avoid being blamed
Officers noted Espinosa also had an open bench warrant from June 2023 for failure to obey a lawful order
Jail records show she is facing one count of battery on a person 65 years or older
Espinosa is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center
where her bond was listed as “to be set.”
