It was not long after the regular season finale against Arizona, which saw Eusebio record a 64-yard touchdown, his one and only catch of the season, in Arizona State’s 49-7 win over the Wildcats when Eusebio got the news: No more walk on “I got in the team meeting with my brothers around me thinking about this long journey up until this point In that room alongside Eusebio was redshirt senior Malik McClain He too knows what it’s like to work your way up While they had much different paths in high school — McClain attended the athletic powerhouse of IMG Academy in Florida and was rated a four-star wide receiver prospect — McClain has been trying to prove himself in the receiver room after transferring in from Penn State last year McClain had to red shirt last season as he was still getting his grasp on the playbook He’s one of the hardest working on the team To see him get that scholarship was special I felt happy and grateful for him that he was able to get that opportunity.” who went from being a third-round draft pick to eventual Super Bowl MVP “If anybody on the team last year that deserved it he’s probably one of the most improved players that we have It’s a testament to him putting in hard work he deserved some playing time and he took advantage of his opportunity who caught 60 passes for 762 yards and 13 touchdowns in his senior year at Parish Episcopal in Texas There were no guarantees of arriving in Tempe But Eusebio worked his way up the hierarchy in the wide receiver room The redshirt sophomore saw his first game action early in the season taking a carry for a 5-yard run in the season opener against Wyoming It wasn’t until the end of the season when Eusebio recorded the first official reception of his college career and it was a memorable one with the long score in the Territorial Cup “I was pretty much grinding all year,” Eusebio said spring ball I was even doing pretty good last year it was pretty nice to be able to show what I can do but said he could see himself playing a role similar to Melquan Stovall from last season a player that Eusebio considers one of his role models “If I got to fill a version of those shoes Eusebio has been getting action with the first-team offense this spring running alongside Jordyn Tyson and Malik McClain While Eusebio may be on the slighter side — he is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds — he makes up for it with his explosiveness and agility His touchdown against Arizona was a swing pass that Eusebio took up the left sideline doing almost all of the work behind his blockers but he keeps making plays for us.’ He’s earned the respect of the coaches Logan Stanley is a sports reporter with The Arizona Republic who primarily focuses on high school, ASU and Olympic sports. Only in a film like Love Hurts will you be swooning for a blossoming romance between an assistant real estate agent (Lio Tipton) and a knife-wielding assassin (Mustafa Shakir) in one moment and then wincing in horror as someone is stabbed through the eye with a boba straw in another scene Director Jonathan Eusebio’s action-comedy balances the touching and the horrific as it follows Marvin Gable (Ke Huy Quan) a former hitman turned realtor who is thrust back into the world of violence when an old flame The two have to fight for their lives once Marvin’s brother Featuring a murderers’ row of supporting cast members like Marshawn Lynch and Sean Austin Love Hurts puts all of its characters through the wringer and its mix of earnest sentiment and dynamic action is exactly what appealed to Eusebio’s sensibilities “What I tried to do was have an emotional journey throughout the movie and have this natural crescendo when it came to the fight scenes,” he shared Eusebio spoke with JoySauce about how the characters informed the film’s fight scenes how he balances the romantic and action elements and his transition from doing stunt work to sitting in the director’s chair This interview has been edited for clarity and length What I tried to do was have an emotional journey throughout the whole movie and have this natural crescendo The fights at the beginning are a bit more steady and playful but by the time we get to the fights at the end so the choreography feels a little more visceral Ke Huy Quan and director Jonathan Eusebio on the set of "Love Hurts." The fact that the action is so varied speaks to the variety of our backgrounds When you look at the characters in the film and my team and I thought about the personalities of the characters and how their action fits their personality I’m proud of the fact that we have a very diverse cast; I picked people who I thought would embody the characters the best I grew up around different types of people and know the power of having different voices when you’re making something were able to pick it up and apply some of their skill sets to the fighting even if they didn’t necessarily come from action film backgrounds I spoke to him in the language of an athlete or someone who did combat sports you see what they do well and accentuate it Zachary Lee is a freelance film and culture writer based in Chicago. News The Filipino-American Community Newspaper Since 1991 Acclaimed stunt coordinator brings decades of action expertise to his first feature film featuring Oscar winners Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose Jonathan Eusebio has been a powerhouse in the action and stunt world as an acclaimed veteran stunt coordinator and fight coordinator choreographing some of Hollywood’s most thrilling sequences in mega hits such as Black Panther He also served as the second-unit director on Deadpool 2 Eusebio makes a significant leap—his debut as a full-fledged feature film director Transitioning from stunt coordinator and second unit director to the main unit director’s chair is no small feat the journey was both challenging and eye-opening so I’ve been a part of every aspect of production but I had never sat through the whole thing as the head,” he told the Asian Journal “When you are a second unit director or action director you’re operating under a set of rules given to you Eusebio’s extensive background in stunt coordination and second unit directing greatly influenced his approach to Love Hurts Having worked with some of the industry’s top talent he understood the importance of collaboration “I was already very used to working with other creative and intelligent people and the best stuff comes from that collaboration.” Eusebio took classes with a dramaturg to deepen his understanding of working with actors you’re dealing with a different type of process Emotional scenes require a unique kind of storytelling I wanted to familiarize myself with different acting techniques so I could guide my actors more effectively.” Eusebio’s journey into the world of action filmmaking is deeply rooted in his upbringing and family’s immigrant story Born in Canada to Filipino parents—both nurses who migrated from the Philippines—he grew up navigating different cultural landscapes His family moved from Toronto to Maine before ultimately settling in Southern California where his passion for martial arts and action choreography took shape Eusebio’s first and only trip to the Philippines was in 2011 when he served as the fight coordinator for The Bourne Legacy That experience was not only a professional milestone but also a rare personal connection to his parents’ homeland Eusebio has long been a champion of Filipino martial arts (FMA) incorporating it into his stunt work whenever possible I knew I wasn’t going to open a gym to pass on what I had learned so the only way to do it was to incorporate FMA into my films A lot of people think Filipino martial arts are just sticks but it’s a complete system—there’s weapons I’ve always tried to weave that into the movies I’ve worked on.” A key figure in Eusebio’s career has been director and stunt coordinator David Leitch with whom he shares a nearly 30-year creative partnership Their journey began at Dan Inosanto’s Academy of Martial Arts where they trained under some of the best in the field “David and the others were like my older brothers I watched them evolve from stuntmen to coordinators to second unit directors played a critical role in supporting Eusebio’s directorial debut “I’m very fortunate to have him as my mentor and he really protected me throughout the process.” Eusebio found himself directing not just any actors but two Oscar winners—Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose The decision to cast them was a deliberate one we were trying to figure out who would be the best person to play Marvin someone the audience would like—well-mannered but capable of flipping a switch Watching Ke’s Oscar push after Everything Everywhere All At Once “Ke pointed out how she presented him his Oscar and how much love they had for each other and I knew right away she was meant to be Rose.” The film pays homage to classic Hong Kong action films “This movie is a love letter to those ‘80s Hong Kong movies My love for those films is embedded in Love Hurts You can see that influence in every frame.” Many audiences know Quan from The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom but not everyone is aware of his stunt background Eusebio leveraged that knowledge to create intricate which allowed me to design the kind of action I wanted He already understood the rhythm and timing of fight choreography so we could focus on making the scenes exciting and dynamic,” he said With two Oscar winners headlining his first feature I’ve worked on many big projects with the best crews I didn’t want to be the one to mess up Ke’s comeback,” he shared “I wanted to make sure I told a complete story The responsibility of leading two recent Oscar winners was daunting but I couldn’t have asked for a more collaborative and supportive cast.” Link IconCopy linkFacebook LogoShare on Trump’s second term and as he has taken a flurry of executive actions to carry out a promised crackdown on illegal immigration The head of Philadelphia’s Office of Immigrant Affairs has resigned and They stay here for a couple of months during the summer Once we became familiar with the programmes supporting Sahrawi children October — Chefy arrived to complete the entire school year here in Spain and the plan is for him to continue all his studies here in Spain the centre around which everything revolves It’s where I grow and the reason I do everything in life I also include my relationship with God and with myself My wife and I were very happy — blissfully happy — and we continue to be happy now with the children But the period in which we didn’t have children and were trying to have them and realising they weren’t coming God has willed that we don’t have children and we formed a perfectly structured family We were perfectly content with the peace and quiet at home but we are completely fulfilled with the children We see helping these children as a path to sanctification they help us to sanctify ourselves as well My work largely involves agricultural tasks through which I can always keep the Lord present Many of his parables are drawn from agricultural life I think of the sowing of the Kingdom of God; when harvesting you can always remain mindful of Jesus at every moment Love Hurts director Jonathan “JoJo” Eusebio came to filmmaking from the world of martial arts: In the ’90s he attended the Los Angeles-area Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts where he met fellow practitioners David Leitch and Chad Stahelski.  he watched over the decades as they became stuntmen The two collaborated on John Wick before Stahelski went on to direct the Keanu Reeves franchise’s sequels and Leitch directed films including Deadpool 2 Eusebio followed them to Hollywood, racking up credits for movies including Collateral and Iron Man 2, as well as the Bourne and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises. He joined the stunt choreography team for 87North the production company founded by Leitch and his wife Eusebio rose from doing stunts to being a second unit director the person on set who typically oversees action sequences that don’t require the main cast.  “I’m very lucky that I can pick up the phone and call David or Chad for advice anytime,” Eusebio tells MovieMaker.McCormick whose credits include Atomic Blonde and The Fall Guy “You’ve got to start thinking about your future One of the scripts she shared with him was the action-packed romance Love Hurts about a mild-mannered real estate agent named Marvin (Ke Huy Quan) who is drawn back into his violent past life by an ex-partner in crime named Rose (Ariana DeBose) Eusebio loved the premise and quirkiness of the characters of the Love Hurts script Eusebio welcomed the chance to inject emotional intensity and kinetic action into the film you come into a world where the rules of the universe are already laid out for you so I had to function within this box,” Eusebio tells MovieMaker you’ve got to make all the rules and decisions Eusebio and the film’s producers were discussing who could play Marvin at the same time Quan was mounting his awards campaign for Everything including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Quan It marked a brilliant comeback for the former child star of The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.“I was watching him on screen Everyone loves him and I was a big fan of his growing up We should get him,’” recalls Eusebio. ”I knew his background in action It was about letting the rest of the world know that he could do it.”He was quickly struck by what an all-consuming responsibility it is to direct a film.  “I wasn’t prepared for how much it would consume my mindset I lived this movie in my head for two years I had already been living this story for quite some time.”  Also Read: Death, Rebirth, Repeat: Bong Joon Ho and Robert Pattinson Start Fresh with Mickey 17 “When I talk about stunts and second-unit directing you don’t really know how the movie’s going to turn out until the end of edit or even by the time we start showing in theaters The part of the process I enjoy the most — seeing the movie and seeing how it makes people feel as an audience.” The biggest challenge of directing a feature was time constraints “Sometimes they can go from twelve hours to fourteen hours to sixteen hours,” Eusebio says “You’re trying to get as much as you can towards the end of a shoot There’s a lot of things you have to deal with at the end of a shoot and it can be exhausting but the payoff is big.”  He notes that he “didn’t have a super-long shooting schedule You need performers that can do the action repeatedly but in a short amount of time I didn’t have the luxury of having a lot of time to finesse scenes or sequences.” Eusebio couldn’t coordinate the stunts on the film Fortunately he had a trust cohort of fellow stunt professionals he had worked with for 10 years including stunt designer and coordinator Can Aydin.  “The team I was using when I was a stunt coordinator… they took over the roles that I did when I was a stunt coordinator or second-unit director,” Eusebio says “There’s a shorthand I have with them that makes the action design easier.”  But shooting stunt scenes wasn’t the biggest challenge of Love Hurts I’m very comfortable with action regardless of the time constraints The hardest thing for me to navigate wasn’t the action it was the romance: I’m a stuntman and I’m doing a romantic comedy and I think a lot of people can relate to them.” Love Hurts is now in theaters from Universal Pictures Main image: (L-R) Ke Huy Quan and director Jonathan “JoJo” Eusebio on the set of Love Hurts Venezia boss Eusebio Di (Cinvestav) Mexico City Best professional advice I’ve received: The harder I work A basic tenet in conformational analysis dictates that substituents in six-membered rings prefer to position themselves equatorially The anomeric effect refers to cases where substituents instead position themselves axially Using the molecular models, he shows how his research team discovered that an organic heterocyclic molecule adopted a conformation that seemed impossible. Its bulky substituent was hovering above the ring rather than alongside it. “We had evidence for an unprecedented, strong anomeric interaction,” he explains (J. Org. Chem. 1982, DOI: 10.1021/jo00146a048) But like other fundamental principles governing molecular physics is not a topic that attracts much of the spotlight,” he says As he uses the molecular model kit to tell the story of discovery he begins to reminisce about how the kit has a story of its own he attended a short course on stereochemistry one of the creators of conformational analysis “He noticed how intrigued I was by his Fieser molecular models referring to the plastic sticks dispersed on the table he went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to pursue his PhD under the supervision of Eliel after finishing a postdoc at the diagnostic division of Syntex in Palo Alto he received an invitation to join the chemistry department at Cinvestav Mexico City “By then I had decided I wanted to have my own research group,” he says “I also concluded that my potential contribution as a teacher and as a researcher would have a much greater impact in Mexico.” former editor in chief of the Journal of Organic Chemistry considers Juaristi’s work in conformational analysis enantioselective synthesis of β-amino acids and asymmetric organocatalysis outstanding But Poulter particularly credits Juaristi’s role in the development of the field of physical organic chemistry on the continent as Juaristi was a trailblazer in establishing a rigorous program for training students in Mexico in the late 1970s “The impact of his work has spread throughout Latin America as his students have moved on to other countries to establish their own programs,” he says Juaristi has been one of the most determined promoters of green chemistry in Mexico He aims to develop products and processes that reduce the release of environmentally harmful waste He is particularly interested in using high-speed ball milling to develop solvent-free conditions for catalytic processes “We are pioneers in applying mechanochemistry in peptide synthesis as well as asymmetric organocatalysis through mechanochemical activation.” the veteran researcher is mostly unknown to chemists outside Mexico Juaristi’s colleagues say one explanation could be that fundamental science like his doesn’t get enough press a former president of the Chemical Society of Mexico also points to the strong skepticism toward research that comes from anywhere other than the famous research centers in Europe or the US especially against young scientists in Latin America some colleagues prefer to cite the work done in institutions in the US While working in Mexico over the past 45 years he commends the advancements he’s finding across Latin America graduate programs in chemistry—not only in Mexico but in other countries like Brazil and Colombia—is something to be proud of,” he says But scientists face new challenges with governments skeptical of the importance of education and research Consequent cuts of scholarships and grants have recently happened in Brazil “The last 6 years have been very difficult because the current government in Mexico does not support science,” Juaristi says has lost his grant from the Mexican science council although Juaristi is skeptical that the “available financial resources will be sufficient to honor this promise.” Juaristi sees a bright future for his laboratory He recalls a comment from Nobel laureate Herbert Brown that made an impression on him and after his lecture Brown said his best chemistry efforts came after winning the prize The comment now makes complete sense for Juaristi: “There is no reason to stop exciting projects; I have many ideas; I am just 73 years old.” This article has been sent to the following recipient: Sign up for C&EN's must-read weekly newsletter Copyright © 2025 American Chemical Society When 18-year-old Jonathan "Jojo" Eusebio enrolled at Dan Inosanto's Academy of Martial Arts school he never realized that martial arts would be his calling A biological sciences graduate from UC Irvine whose mother hails from the Visayas and whose father is from Manila still remembers the days when his parents would try to dissuade him from getting more involved in his passion He narrated to us in an exclusive interview at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills You're wasting your education and your time!" Eusebio was given the reins to direct his first feature film the comedy-action movie "Love Hurts" which stars Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose The action-comedy film follows Marvin Gable (Quan) a former hitman-turned-realtor who finds out that his brother is hunting him when he reunites with his former partner When we talked to the two Golden Globe and Oscar-winning actors Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose (who portrays Rose) they both were impressed with the first-time feature director He's been doing actions for such a long time he was given the opportunity to be a director And that is something that really resonated with me "I feel like we're both on similar journeys because me being the number one on the call sheet for this movie It was such an easy and natural working relationship because we spoke the same language we knew what kind of action movie we wanted to make We were very much in sync in terms of the creative process and also a lot of the fight sequences." I was so intrigued and honestly very proud of him He has created some incredible fight sequences over his tenure I was really inspired and impressed by his kind of fearlessness and any fear he might have felt never got in the way of him being collaborative we're both very specific and very opinionated and he found a beautiful way of focusing on that energy And I think you can see that in the film." said that she learned some stunts from Eusebio make sure your basics are sound before you go for the big stuff." Eusebio revealed that he was influenced by the following directors – "Spielberg I love Tarantino but I think everyone I've met in the business helped me shape my sensibility for things." It's like I still feel the same because even though my title goes up and it's at times overwhelming also because it's like you see how people react to the movie Eusebio said that he grew up watching a lot of Hong Kong action movies I grew up in that era like the '80s Hong Kong wave this is like my love letter to those movies." So how does his biological sciences academic background help him as a director today "Going to school and university just taught me how to do things how to interact with different types of people when you're in college or you're in school and you're away from home for all those years you're learning to interact with different types of people it's like training you to collaborate with different people," he said As for choosing Quan and DeBose for his first movie I was trying to define who the best person embodies who I think this character is you're watching Ke and her interaction with him during the Oscars when she presented him with an award You're seeing all this and how they interact those are the general authentic connections that I want to convey on screen I remembered he brought it up to me and then I met her There was really no doubt in my head about that decision I just knew I needed someone I could connect with Ke on an emotional level; someone who can keep him on his toes on an emotional performance level the most challenging scene to do was the kitchen fight scene That's one of my favorite scenes in the whole movie We filmed that fight two days into shooting Andre (Eriksen) and Marshawn (Lynch) until they arrived And then Marshawn wasn't available until two days before We all got the guys all together and we just put them together I got a great response from that fight and I'm very proud of them They picked it up and even though it's like we did it very early on in the production everyone was still trying to find their groove The fact that it's the most well-received action piece in the movie means a lot." said that since DeBose comes from a dance background it was also easy for her to be trained in martial arts which is what fight choreography in movies is based on it's easier to teach someone with her background than someone who has no background at all everyone was very physically adept already." Asked whether he incorporated any Filipino martial arts in the movie I always put some sense of kali or the Filipino stuff in any of the choreography I do Hong Kong-based style as opposed to a Filipino martial arts style." he also met at Inosanto's Academy of Martial Arts who became his "John Wick" co-directors later on "He's an amazing martial artist and he taught us all these different martial arts that I applied to fight choreography But the one thing I learned from him that always stuck in my mind was the greatest thing to have The greatest attribute to having is an open mind I use that mode of thinking in everything I do But I had a very amazing time over there and I learned a lot." Eusebio looks forward to the day he will be able to make a movie in the Philippines Like maybe shoot something in the Philippines It's always nice to give back or express your culture and your people He also sees himself establishing a studio where he can train aspiring directors and stunt or fight coordinators I think that's a very important gift you can give to others." but I think it's just anything that I read and resonates with me I'm open to all genres of film because I grew up watching martial arts movies As for his advice to aspiring filmmakers who want to follow in his footsteps You have to allow yourself to create your luck The world now is not just limited to shooting for movie theaters he hopes audiences will get this message after watching "Love Hurts." they’re doing what they’re doing When Colt goes to find the main star of Jody’s movie and Dan was fighting downstairs in the kitchen We did PreViz for a week and then rehearsed with the actors and stunt guys One of the biggest action set pieces is the garbage truck chase where Colt fights one of Tom’s henchmen as they careen down the Sydney Harbor Bridge The garbage bin was built by special effects and the actors and stunt guys were harnessed into the bin with an armature connected to the truck so they wouldn’t fly out of it The armature is a metal piece built onto the rig and telescopes above with the actors and stunt guys harnessed to it They’re actually moving with the truck as it’s spinning They’re really fighting in the bin and getting pulled down the street What went into planning something that complicated We thought about how you would fight in something that’s moving and spinning How does the human body react to the gravitational forces pulling on the body with things spinning and moving all around them You’re not going to be able to move that much because you don’t have a firm footing The choreography was based on the fact that you don’t know how your body’s going to react but you also don’t want to fall off while this guy is trying to push you off a moving vehicle you look at all the variables and come up with how to resolve them A couple of weeks to conceive the idea and test it out with the stunt guys you get the actual piece of equipment or at least all the dimensions we had the actual bin and the truck in a rehearsal space so we choreographed and tested with the bin stationary first we slowly started moving and bringing the truck up to speed It took a few days to shoot because it involved many locations—the Harbor Bridge Ryan Gosling really got dragged behind that truck He’s a great guy who really supports the stunt community He’s also such a great performer and athlete The climactic chase has Colt hanging onto a hovering helicopter while he fights Tom swinging himself from one skid to the other underneath We built an actual helicopter with all the interior specs so we could practice in the actual space while it was stationary when Colt gets on the skids and swings underneath we couldn’t do that part with the helicopter in the air assistant stunt coordinator] did a lot of PreViz through Real Engine to see what it would look like if someone’s really swinging underneath a flying aircraft we combined the real footage we shot and Micah’s PreViz to come up with the final shots What other intense stunts can you tease about the extended cut There’s a chase sequence that’s not in the theatrical cut We had to build this warehouse for a much longer chase after Ryan’s fight in the club when he chased the drug dealer out of the club running through the scaffolding inside the warehouse What’s your take on the current state of stunt safety Safety equipment is definitely much better than in the 80s when they didn’t have roll cages or protective equipment that we have now They were basically grabbing the seatbelt and hanging onto it like a strap Some guys have told me they used duct tape and toilet paper rolls for pads you can do crazier things for a longer period of time and with more repetition PreViz really saves your performers—you can see the action sequences in advance What do you think of the recent industry push for a stunt category in the Oscars Leitch’s producing partner and wife] are really pushing for a stunt category in the Academy Awards There’s one for every area except for stunts An estimated 18,000-20,000 fans packed inside the stadium, with many spilling over to the sidelines to watch the game. Both Pele and Eusebio, who joined the NASL in 1975, were struggling for fitness at their new clubs but they soon made their mark. Benfica icon Eusebio opened the scoring with a free-kick 12 minutes from time before Pele found the net, which led hundreds of overly-enthusiastic fans to mob the superstar in celebration.  Amid the confusion, the goal had been disallowed by the referee as the ball had gone out of play, hit fans sitting next to the Boston goal and came back on to the field prior to Pele's effort (and not hit the post as many fans thought). The Brazil legend, who was injured in the melee, was then taken to the locker room for his own protection, as was Eusebio.  "We just threw ourselves over Pele to protect him," John O'Reilly, the Cosmos' publicist, told the New York Times. "Those people were wild." Eventually after a lengthy delay, the game was annulled and later replayed. On the field that day was USA goalkeeper Shep Messing, who had been cut by the New York Cosmos in the offseason and picked up by Boston. Although he was upset not to play alongside Pele – something he did the following season – Messing was over the moon to become team-mates with Eusebio. "I was released from the Cosmos and read that Pele had signed with the [club] and I was sick about it," Messing told FIFA. "So I went all over the country, tried out in Boston where the coach signed me for the team. One day [head coach Hubert Vogelsinger] came into the locker room early in the season and said he had just signed Eusebio, plus two other Portuguese players. Into the locker room comes Eusebio... and my jaw dropped." One of Eusebio's first games for his new team was the high-profile reunion with Pele for their first meeting since the 1966 FIFA World Cup when the 'Black Panther' scored twice in a shock 3-1 victory for Portugal. "When Pele came to visit us in Boston, they sold more tickets than there were seats. There was too much of a crowd to be in the stadium so they all came down and people lined up right against the touchline," Messing recalled. It was the closeness of the fans next to the goal that caused the chaotic scenes at the end of the game. "Pele ended up going down, whether he was accidentally hit by someone coming onto the field... and he had a full-time security guard named Pedro who helped get Pele to the locker room," Messing said. "Eusebio was also in the fray trying to help Pele, trying to get people away. It was madness." Eusebio helped Boston to the Eastern Conference finals that season but with money running out, his spell in the FIFA World Cup 26 host city came to a quick end. In his time at the club, Messing and Eusebio became fast friends bonding over late-night poker games, and the goalkeeper helped engineer the striker's move to Toronto Metros-Croatia in an unexpected way. "That season finishes and we knew the team was going out of money, we used to have to run to cash our cheques on Monday morning," Messing said. "It was Eusebio's idea. He said, 'Shep, make believe you are our agent and let's start calling teams.' This is while we are playing poker and smoking cigars. He said, 'Shep, you know everybody. Change your name, get on the phone and start calling teams for me and Wolfgang [Sunholz] and Antonio [Simoes].'  "So I did that, I didn't give my name and I ended up getting him dealt to Toronto. The next week I went to the airport and we were meant to fly to Seattle for a game. We had no money for the airfare and the coach came to me and said the goalkeeper for the New York Cosmos broke his shoulder and they want you back. So they sold me to the Cosmos for 20 round-trip plane tickets to Seattle. So I flew to New York and played for the Cosmos the next week and Eusebio was in Toronto." Gambling in Las Vegas with Pele, Eusebio and Nastase Messing faced Eusebio a number of times in the NASL but the most memorable occasion came when the Portuguese legend was playing for the Las Vegas Quicksilvers in 1977. "We traveled to Las Vegas and the night before the game, they were having a tennis match the next day between Jimmy Connors and Ilie Nastase for $100,000," Messing says. "So we're all in the casino - myself, Pele, Eusebio, Jimmy Connors, Nastase - and at 9pm Pele goes to his room to get ready for the game the next day. Nastase says to Eusebio and me, 'I'm not going up, let's stay out.'  "Jimmy Connors goes to his room and the three of us stay up until four in the morning gambling in the casino. The next day. Nastase forfeits the tennis match as he wants to watch us play. I made a couple of saves from Eusebio and we hugged and kissed, it was a great reunion. I think we lost that game but that was really the last time I saw him [on the field.] He was a great team-mate and a great friend." Messing played a central role in the growth of football in the United States in the 1970s and he believes the FIFA World Cup 2025 and FIFA World Cup 26 will take the sport to unprecedented levels in the region. "The great comparison is looking at what [the 1994 FIFA World Cup] did. In 1994, the sport was dead," Messing says. "There was no professional outdoor soccer here and the World Cup was part of the start of Major League Soccer (MLS) and however many years later, look how much it's grown.  "I think this World Cup will have a forever lasting effect on soccer in this country because the media landscape and demographics of the country are so different. MLS's growth has been very conservative, measured and fiscally responsible but it's been a slow build. I think this World Cup will... be a lightning rod for the sport here."  |ব্যাংকপুঁজি সংকটে বিপর্যস্ত বেশ কয়েকটি ব্যাংককিছু ব্যাংক এখনো তুলনামূলকভাবে শক্তিশালী মূলধন ধরে রাখতে পারলেও বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের তথ্য অনুযায়ী এই খাতে রয়েছে বড় ফারাক। Former Roma boss Eusebio Di Francesco: “I will call De Rossi.”RomaPressSeptember 20 2024 at 3:20 PM UTC·1 min readFormer Roma manager and current Venezia coach Eusebio Di Francesco was shocked to find out Daniele De Rossi had been sacked by Roma The Italian technician addressed the situation at Trigoria in a press conference appearance earlier today Di Francesco made it a point to keep his thoughts to himself “I will call De Rossi and I’ll tell him what I have to say to him,” said the ex-Roma boss “I don’t want to get into specifics and say circumstantial things [to the media].” OneFootball's home page Search Settings Sign In Sign InJoinEusebio Di Francesco: “I wish for Roma to win tomorrow.” | OneFootballRomaPress Former Roma manager Eusebio Di Francesco – in charge of the club from 2017 until 2019 – spoke fondly of the Giallorossi ahead of the Derby della Capitale After beating Alessandro Nesta’s Monza, the current Venezia coach discussed the rivalry between Roma and Lazio in his post-match interview with DAZN “Tomorrow I don’t know what kind of derby it will be, I would prefer that the Giallorossi always win because of the affection I have for Roma.” Related NewsRoma 3-3 AC Milan Women: Rossonere end season with stunning comeback Top four race: Remaining Juventus, Roma, Lazio, Bologna fixtures rated by difficulty Marseille won’t return to Rome training camp this week Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gets better of Jose Mourinho as Besiktas win Istanbul derby Premier League Awards: Enciso stunner, Semenyo or Delap? Hansi Flick One such player, who has been tipped for a bright future at the club, was young midfielder Xavi Espart, as reported by SPORT. A La Masia talent through and through, Xavi has been shuttling between Juvenil A and Barça Atletic this season, even making six appearances for the reserve team. The teenage prodigy is rated very highly in the club, with the report even likening him to legendary former midfielder Eusebio Sacristan. One of the most underrated players in Johan Cruyff’s iconic dream team, Eusebio played for Barcelona between 1988 and 1995, winning four La Liga titles, a UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, a Champions League, and a Copa del Rey. Cruyff famously dubbed him “the diesel engine,” a testament to his professionalism, adaptability, and humility. Now, decades later, Xavi Espart, is said to be showing striking similarities to the club legend. I really consider them my second family.” She encourages anyone considering becoming a nurse to do it It’s really fulfilling to help other people,” said Eusebio “But you gotta really love what you do.” Nurses have a great impact on a hospital’s operations “The nurses at VA Greater Los Angeles a are testament to the values of our profession and the resilience needed to make a difference,” said Michael Simmons “You are the heart and soul of our healthcare system tirelessly caring for others and positively impacting the lives of countless individuals.”  Nurses work non-stop to ensure that everyone’s loved ones are cared for when people are unable to do it for themselves Take time to thank the nurses in your life for all that they do to help make the world a better place Oscar Licon-Eusebio of the NCW Equity Alliance is heading to Pinnacles Prep as the new Director of Operations Licon attended Central Washington University where he earned two bachelor’s degrees in accounting and business administration He also holds a master’s degree in information technology from CWU he worked for the Wenatchee School District technology department and did outreach work for Wenatchee Valley College He has been the Executive Director of the NCW Equity Alliance since October 2022 and also heads up the community enrichment group Parque Padrinos Licon-Eusebio previously served as a Pinnacles Prep board member Licon-Eusebio could not immediately be reached for comment Email notifications are only sent once a day A police video showed officers standing on the edge of a deep hole in the ground Read moreA police video showed officers standing on the edge of a deep hole in the ground Israel imposed a total aid blockade on Gaza in March Read moreIsrael imposed a total aid blockade on Gaza in March Much of Gaza has been destroyed by the war sparked by the October 7, 2023 attack Read moreMuch of Gaza has been destroyed by the war sparked by the October 7, 2023 attack Israel has called up thousands of reservists for an expanded offensive in Gaza Read moreIsrael has called up thousands of reservists for an expanded offensive in Gaza Ghana's economy has been hit by brutal inflation for years Read moreGhana's economy has been hit by brutal inflation for years Ghana's President John Mahama has promised to turn the economy around Read moreGhana's President John Mahama has promised to turn the economy around Left-leaning Prime Minister Anthony Albanese won a landslide victory on Saturday Read moreLeft-leaning Prime Minister Anthony Albanese won a landslide victory on Saturday Eight OPEC+ member countries on Saturday announced a sharp increase in oil production Read moreEight OPEC+ member countries on Saturday announced a sharp increase in oil production Former Maoist Kiran, who now joined the DRG to fight his former comrades Read moreFormer Maoist Kiran, who now joined the DRG to fight his former comrades DRG commanders say all their actions are lawful Read moreDRG commanders say all their actions are lawful Former rebel chief Yogesh Madhvi, who now fights for the Indian government Read moreFormer rebel chief Yogesh Madhvi, who now fights for the Indian government The widow of Suresh Teta, killed last year by police, with pictures of her husband Read moreThe widow of Suresh Teta, killed last year by police, with pictures of her husband Government DRG paramilitaries Sanjana Yadav (L) and Anjila Minj Read moreGovernment DRG paramilitaries Sanjana Yadav (L) and Anjila Minj Rights activist Soni Sori Read moreRights activist Soni Sori India's Maoist insurgency's last stronghold is in the mineral-rich forests of Bastar region in central Chhattisgarh state Read more Please select what you would like included for printing: Copy the text below and then paste that into your favorite email application Enter your phone number above to have directions sent via text This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply Service map data © OpenStreetMap contributors
