the Floripa Film Fest is happening from March 20-22 in Florianópolis
Harry Bryant at the Floripa Film Fest 2024
On March 20-22 in Florianopolis, Brazil, one of the biggest new international surf film festivals will kick off their second annual gathering: The 2025 Floripa Surf Film Festival.
Started by veteran filmmakers Duda Saracura and Bruna Zanin
the festival brings the Santa Catarina surf community together
along with filmmakers and surfers from around the world
and it couldn't have started in a better way,” says Duda
“did we really pull that off?” It set the standards pretty high for the upcoming years and now we are working our heads off to meet the expectations [laughs].”
as he was locking in the last few films for the festival
SURFER: Congratulations on the Floripa Film Fest
How did it all come about?Duda Saracura: There were many people involved to make it happen like that
it's fair to say that Bruno Zanin and I have been dreaming of this festival at least since 2020
when the pandemic tore apart the last standing film festival that we had here in Brazil
that happened from 2012 until 2018 in Porto Alegre and Rio de Janeiro
and music festival where Bruno and I first met
the legend/charger/angel Ricardo dos Santos
introduced us and asked if I could host Bruno in Porto Alegre while they were there for the festival weekend
Bruno was starting his career as a lensman having Ricardo as his main supporter
The Festival connected Bruno with his profession
introduced Brazil to a really talented filmmaker and year by year it nurtured friendships among the content producers in Brazil
it was becoming almost like a music festival
Bruno and I decided that we should keep the dream alive
We’re unable to load this content right now
View directly on Instagram
why are film festivals like this so important
Duda: Watching the productions that we put so much time and effort into on a cell phone screen is kind of heartbreaking
We started brainstorming on how we could recreate that creative gathering
giving filmmakers and directors the best screening opportunity that they could ever have
Looking at some other Festivals around the world and speaking with the organisers of those events we created the Floripa Film Fest
with a big okay sign from Pedro Barros and Layback
inspiring the new generation and challenging them to create
and put their own perspective into deeper storytellings
We know that drift away from the social media format almost sounds like a distant utopia nowadays
but the first year proved to us that the audience is thirsty for that
We had more than 1200 people on the three nights of the festival
and even though people were submerged into the movies
and that's how I started pitching brands and partners to build surfing events that were more than contests
SURFER: Has everyone that's come fallen in love with Santa Catarina and that area around Florianopolis
Last year we hosted Dave Fox and Harry Bryant
who were showing “Motel Hell,” the South African Tao Farren presenting his latest film with Michael February called “Instrument,” and also Jon Aspuru from the Basque Country with two of his own productions called “Mundaka Legendary” and “Spicy Knives.” Alongside with the Festival we have crazy parties at the same venue
It's safe to say that Florianópolis must be in the Top 5 best towns for parties in the world
SURFER: Pedro Barros' brand Layback is helping make these film festivals happen
What's it like working for a brand that puts an emphasis on culture and experiences like festivals
Has Layback been really happy with what you guys have built
Duda: What Layback is doing for the Brazilian surf and skate culture is unreal
When we came to them with the idea of the festival they gave us all the creative freedom to build it as core as we wanted to
They really trust legit people in each specific area and are not afraid to do bold moves to pull things off
the same weekend we are having the Festival
Layback is sponsoring the WSL South American QS
but now I think saying they are a beer company is an understatement
with a wide open garden that we will transform into a theater
We're going to screen 50 films in total
trying to set good balance between innovative stuff
SURFER: You've been really busy the last few years
filming and editing No Contest for Stab and Red Bull
What's next for you and for the FIlm Festival
Getting to document other cultures around the world through surfing is pretty much the thing I love the most in my life
But when you spend a lot of time on the road
Last year I got to know that I was gonna be a daddy
three days prior to the festival's first day
This year my little Toni will be 4 months old
Looks like the Festival is going to have a very cute mascot carried around
The goal for the FFF is to grow little by little
with consistency and to stick to our values
Can someone help to convince my wife that I should surf more please

remembers the days of his youth when fish were abundant
His eyes turn nostalgic and distant as he thinks back
Ramos started fishing when he was six – when he caught his first crab right in front of his house
a traditional fishing community in Florianópolis
the capital of Santa Catarina state in southern Brazil
he soon began working professionally to help support his family
“I lived in a time of great abundance – it was indescribable,” Ramos recalls
we no longer have even a quarter of the tainha [a traditional fish species in the city] that we used to
the diversity of fish in the water was gone.”
Ramos, who retired from fishing in 2012, says that the growth of tourism and gentrification have transformed the island’s east coast
Some fishers have invested in rental properties for the summer season or take on informal jobs during the fishing off-season
when they also receive benefits from the government
“They want to own a restaurant and a boat to take tourists out
Many fishers use fishing only to supplement their income.”
Ramos believes fishers are still unaware of their environmental impact
The most common fish in Florianópolis is the Lebranche mullet (Mugil liza)
This species has become a symbol of the city
and its fishing is a long-standing tradition that celebrates the city’s connection with the sea
But the Lebranche mullet is now severely overfished. Starting this year, the federal government is imposing catch quotas on artisanal fishers to allow stocks to generate
local stocks in southern Brazil could be facing collapse
Fishing quotas are common in many parts of the world, most notably in the EU, where each member state is allocated an annual quota under the common fisheries policy
which they say threatens an already precarious occupation
“They are limiting my ability to work, and all we want is to work,” says Leandra Felício Machado, a fisher and director of the Z-11 Fishers’ Colony
“Our biggest difficulty in artisanal fishing is politics
any animal is valued more than the fisher.”
Machado explains that it’s already difficult for fishers to make ends meet
given the high costs of operating and maintaining their boats
Ivo da Silva, president of the Federation of Artisanal Fishers of Santa Catarina (FEPESC)
questions the data used by the federal government to justify its decision
“There isn’t a single research vessel in Santa Catarina today
so it’s hard to accept quotas when we know we’re on the right path.”
He also believes traditional fishing methods deserve more recognition
the arrasto de praia (beach seine) fishing technique is rooted in Indigenous fishing practices
Fishers cast a net into the sea and pull it back with the help of 20 to 60 people
attracting many tourists during the peak fishing season
“The whole community joins in and leaves with a fish,” Silva explains.
This method is now also subject to a catch quota of 1,100 tonnes
whereas FEPESC had requested a minimum of 1,200 tonnes
argues that these fishing quotas were unavoidable and that they were only imposed following a participatory process
“Quotas are a harsh measure; we’re imposing them regrettably
but also responsibly,” says Adayse Bossolani da Guarda
general coordinator of coastal and marine participatory management at the Secretariat of Artisanal Fishing
which is linked to the Ministry of Fisheries
are already subject to catch quotas in other regions of Brazil to help replenish stocks
These are temporary measures that can hopefully be lifted once stocks recover
Guarda emphasizes that the quota was not imposed arbitrarily
as discussions had been ongoing since 2015
and that overfishing by commercial fishers is largely to blame
“But artisanal fishing is also catching more than the species can regenerate,” she says
“The entire methodology used takes into account historical data and stock projections for the species.”
Roberto Wahrlich, an oceanographer and professor at the University of Vale do Itajaí (Univali), coordinates the Fishing Activity Monitoring Project in the state of Santa Catarina, which supports the federal government by tracking the amount of fish caught in the state
“It takes sensitivity to manage fishing,” he says
Wahrlich adds that while fishers are catching roughly the same amount of fish each year
most commercial species are currently overfished
A visible effect of the climate crisis in Florianópolis is a decline in cold-water species
while warm-water species such as shrimp and corvina have become more prevalent
“The fish aren’t dying – they’re relocating,” he explains
changes in species behavior are already on the federal government’s radar
we will have to reassess the periods when fishing is restricted,” she says
“My fishing spot is near the natural pools in Barra da Lagoa
Fishers have also run into issues with surfers and other water sports enthusiasts
president of the Beach Seine Fishers Association of Santa Catarina and director of fisheries and maritime affairs of the Florianópolis Subsecretariat of Fisheries
we have learned to coexist peacefully with surfers and kite surfers after many meetings and discussions,” he says
A side effect of mass tourism has been real estate speculation
Developers are keen to take over the beachfront spaces where fishers have traditionally built their ranchos – small wooden shacks to store fishing gear that are typically taken down at the end of each fishing season
fishers are demanding financial help from the local government to build permanent ranchos that won’t be lost to gentrification
Fishers also want permanent fish markets to be built so they can sell their catch themselves rather than relying on intermediaries.
there is no official municipal data on artisanal fishing harvests to support their demands
The only available data is from Wahrlich’s study
which many artisanal fishers have contested
“We want to show that Florianópolis doesn’t live solely off tourism,” says Lopes
some fishers have found informal side jobs in the tourism industry
“We still have several families here on the island who live exclusively from fishing
they earn money through transport services or by taking tourists on boat trips,” Lopes explains
One of the most visible effects of increasing tourism is the displacement of fishers from their traditional territories
“Fishers who persist in the activity face increasing pressure to share the sea with tourist boats,” says Wahrlich. “Tourism arrives without considering the fishers because our tourism is unplanned.”
He believes fishers should have their fishing territories recognized
“Everything that happens in the ranchos should be subject to evaluation.”
believes the local government can do more to balance the competing demands of tourism and fishing
He argues that the city should preserve its fishing heritage to provide a more authentic experience for visitors
who flock to Florianópolis from all over Brazil and even as far as Europe
“We advocate for tourism and fishing to go hand in hand,” he explains
we want to promote the preservation of fishing culture and traditional practices.”
those practices are already changing with the landscape
Silva says many fishers used to predict the fishing season based on nature
“You could tell if the season would be good by looking at whether the hawthorn trees were blooming
Our mission is to make them freely accessible to everyone
We believe that lasting and impactful change starts with changing the way people think
That’s why we amplify the diverse voices the world needs to hear – from local restoration leaders to Indigenous communities and women who lead the way

TAP Air Portugal has further increased its market share on Europe-Brazil routes with the launch of a new service to Florianópolis
the capital of the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil
Flights between Lisbon Airport and Florianópolis-Hercílio Luz International Airport will operate three times per week using Airbus A330-200 aircraft
Florianópolis becomes the Star Alliance member’s 13th destination in Brazil
TAP Group Head of Strategy Henri-Charles Ozarovsky says the 5,244-mi
(4,557-nm) route had been under consideration for several years
citing growing demand and codeshare partnerships with Brazilian airlines Azul and GOL as key factors
“We continuously monitor data from various regions to identify profitable and sustainable routes
When the opportunity arose to expand to Florianópolis
we saw it as a strategic move to leverage existing operations and partnerships," Ozarovsky says
The introduction of flights to Florianópolis comes in the wake of disruptions at Porto Alegre Airport due to flooding earlier this year
which led to a temporary suspension of TAP's operations there
Ozarovsky says that the new route was not a direct replacement but rather a strategic decision that aligned with TAP’s broader goals in the Brazilian market
“While the unfortunate events at Porto Alegre presented a challenge
the demand for flights to Florianópolis had been growing independently
We believe this route will not only serve existing demand but also uncover latent potential,” he adds
Ozarovsky, who will be speaking at Routes World 2024 in Bahrain in October, says that the airline has not ruled out the possibility of resuming flights to Porto Alegre once the airport is fully operational again and traffic with its Brazilian airline partners normalizes.
In the meantime, further growth is planned from November when TAP resumes flights between Lisbon and Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonia. The airline previously served Manaus from June 2014 to February 2016, but the city has been absent from its network since then.
Analysis of data from OAG Schedules Analyser shows that the launch of flights to Florianópolis has boosted TAP’s current capacity to Brazil to more than 51,000 two-way nonstop weekly seats and some 213,600 two-way monthly seats. This will give TAP a 27.9% share of the Europe-Brazil market in September 2024.
By comparison, LATAM Airlines Group has a 21.8% share this month; Air France-KLM Group has 13.6%; Lufthansa Group and ITA Airways have 11%; and International Airlines Group carriers British Airways and Iberia have 9.5%.
However, TAP has a greater frequency share of the market given its use of A321LR aircraft to Brazilian destinations such as Belem, Fortaleza, Maceio, Natal and Recife. The OAG data shows that TAP accounts for 32% of all Europe-Brazil frequencies in September, ahead of LATAM in second place on 18%.
TAP’s latest expansion comes as the wider Europe-Brazil market continues to grow. The combined number of nonstop scheduled two-way seats will reach 847,500 in January 2025. This represents an 11% hike on January 2024 and up by almost 16% on pre-pandemic levels.
While Ozarovsky does not know if there is overcapacity in the market, he highlights that the January 2025 figure marks an all-time high and comes as passengers are exhibiting greater caution because of the weakness of the Brazilian real.
However, he adds that TAP has maintained a disciplined approach to capacity growth, ensuring it meets demand without oversaturating the market and is closely monitoring its evolution in the run-up to Christmas.

Alycia Parks and Maja Chwalinska are this week's singles champions at WTA 125 events.
At the Open In Arte Angers Loire in Angers, France, No.3 seed Parks of the United States defeated wild card Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-0 in Sunday's singles final. Parks is now a two-time champion in Angers, having already won this title in 2022.
Parks took 2 hours and 22 minutes to overcome former Top 5 player Bencic, who has recently returned to tour following maternity leave. Parks fired 14 aces in the final, and she won 100 percent of her first-service points (7-for-7) in the decisive third set.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Open In Arte Angers Loire (@open.angers)
The 23-year-old Parks continues to excel on indoor hardcourts. This is her fifth WTA 125 singles title, and three of those have come on indoor hard. The American's WTA 250 title at 2023 Lyon was also on an indoor hardcourt.
Currently ranked World No.103, Parks is projected to rise back inside the Top 100 of the PIF Rankings following this week's results. She hit a career-high of No.40 last summer.
It was also a big week for 2021 Olympic gold medalist Bencic, whose return to tour has started well. Bencic has played four events in the last five weeks (including Billie Jean King Cup) and has posted an 8-2 singles record in that time. Bencic gave birth to her first child in April.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Open In Arte Angers Loire (@open.angers)
Bencic also featured in Sunday's doubles final, and she finished runner-up there as well. No.1-seeded Romanians Monica Niculescu and Elena-Gabriela Ruse beat the all-Swiss pairing of Bencic and Celine Naef 6-3, 6-4 for the doubles title.
Niculescu won her second straight Angers title (she took the title here last year with Cristina Bucsa) and her third WTA 125 doubles title overall. This is Ruse's first WTA 125 doubles title of her career.
Meanwhile, Chwalinska of Poland swept through two matches on Sunday to claim her first career WTA 125 singles title at the MundoTenis Open on the red clay of Florianopolis, Brazil.
No.7 seed Chwalinska won a rain-delayed semifinal to open the day, breezing past No.8 seed Leolia Jeanjean of France 6-0, 6-3 in 79 minutes. Hours later, Chwalinska powered to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Swiss qualifier Ylena In-Albon in a 71-minute final.
Chwalinska lost only one set in five matches this week, collecting her biggest career title in the process. The 23-year-old started the season outside the Top 300, but she is currently ranked a career-high No.145 and is projected to go even higher in Monday's updated PIF Rankings.
In-Albon, who nearly cracked the Top 100 in 2022, contested her biggest career final this week. The Swiss got there by upsetting No.1 seed Maria Lourdes Carle 3-6, 7-6(9), 6-2 in Sunday's other rain-delayed semifinal, saving two match points in a three-hour tussle.
Chwalinska also won this week's Florianopolis doubles title, as she and Brazil's Laura Pigossi beat Nicole Fossa Huergo of Italy and Valeriya Strakhova of Ukraine 7-6(3), 6-3 in the final. The doubles final was played indoors on Saturday due to the weather delays.
This is Chwalinska's second career WTA 125 doubles title, having just won last week's WTA 125 Buenos Aires doubles title with Katarzyna Kawa. This is the first WTA 125 doubles title for Pigossi, who won a bronze medal in doubles at the 2021 Olympics.

The beach resort of Camboriú in the southern Brazilian State of Santa Catarina has been declared under emergency Thursday following heavy rains that flooded that place and others such as Florianópolis
First responders have been working around the clock while State authorities also set up shelters as the need for improved drainage systems and flood prevention infrastructure has been highlighted
Residents were also advised to exercise extreme caution in flood-prone areas
Camboriú Mayor Juliana Pavan declared the emergency after more than 120 millimeters of rainfall were recorded in just a few hours flooding city streets and adjacent roads such as BR-101
Argentine tourists were reported to be arriving en masse for the second half of January as a convenient exchange rate advises against vacationing in their home country
about 130 millimeters in the cities of Itajaí
Camboriú and Balneário Camboriú
More than half the volume expected for the entire month of January, Santa Catarina Governor Jorginho Mello pointed out
According to Camboriús Urban Mobility's Ricardo Pastrana
lines were over 26 kilometers long in either direction passing through Porto Belo
Pavan's measure triggered the Emergency Disaster Response Plan
summoning volunteers to reinforce response actions and crowdfunding campaigns
The City Council also announced the opening of three emergency shelters
The Response and Action Coordination Group (GRAC) and teams from Civil Defense
the Department of Public Works and Public Safety are working together in the area to ensure the safety of the population and tourists
especially considering that these climatic phenomena increase the probability of landslides
no weather model predicted Thursday's crisis
characteristic of maritime circulation rains
caught people in Itajaí and Camboriú by surprise
Santa Catarina's experimental meteorological station Epagri/Ciram is not capable of detecting this type of weather phenomenon in time
Epagri/Ciram's expert Gilsânia Cruz told local media that identifying this type of phenomenon depends on smaller-scale precision models
in addition to meteorologists being able to handle new forecasting models
Foul weather is expected to continue until at least Saturday
Brazil's Civil Defense Department predicted heavy and persistent rains will continue to affect Bombinhas
Mello had already made headlines Wednesday when he highlighted that the city of Pomerode
known as the most German city in Brazil stands out for the color of people's skin. According to Brazil's Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE)
The Governor's statement during the opening of the 40th Pomeranian festival was posted on the Santa Catarina State's website on audio and went viral for its alleged racist tint which could result in criminal charges against the State's Chief Executive
and this accusation doesn't apply to me, Mello insisted

white and black mangroves are tropical ecosystem trees that exist between sea and river
in a unique condition of brackish water — the halfway point between freshwater and saltwater
In this transition zone that’s subject to tides
the plants have adapted by developing their own structures to breathe underwater and better cling to the muddy soil by using prop roots
Mangrove forests can be found along almost the entire Brazilian coast
species that eventually migrate out to sea
mangroves are key to the fishing supply chain
mangroves provide natural services that people benefit
from such as carbon sequestration — up to 15 times more than forests on a hectare-for-hectare basis — and protection against the impact of sea waves
which can cause erosion in places where the native vegetation has been stripped away
these biodiverse areas are increasingly threatened by urbanization
Due to the inevitable rise in sea levels and the increase in the frequency and intensity of storms
coastal cities need investments and adaptation measures focused on reducing risks and minimizing the impacts caused by extreme weather events
According to projections by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
sea levels are expected to rise by 20 centimeters (8 inches) by 2050 if the increase in the global average temperature remains below 2° Celsius (3.6° Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels
but it will cause greater coastal erosion problems and indicates that future flooding will reach higher places that historically have never flooded
affecting more people and causing more damage
Rising sea levels are associated with ocean warming
the coalition focuses on mitigation of and adaptation to climate change
The project comprises three pillars: restoration
This makes it a pioneering initiative for a work of this magnitude in the state
there are only a handful of initiatives working with mangroves
a socioeconomic concern that answers some questions related to current climate change
how coastal ecosystems and coastal cities will be impacted by rising sea levels,” says project head Dilton de Castro from the NGO ANAMA
which promotes sustainable socioenvironmental development initiatives
The project’s permanent staff includes 15 people from five institutions: ANAMA
the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC)
the Santa Catarina state environmental institute (IMA)
the Environmental Management and Education Agency (AGEA) and the Çarakura Institute
The mangroves targeted for restoration are located in the river basin with the highest population density in Santa Catarina
which also includes the main water sources that supply the Greater Florianópolis area
The project extends across protected areas in the municipalities of Palhoça
which are home to Guarani Mbyá Indigenous communities and small-scale fishers
Now in the final third of its duration — the project began in February 2023 and runs until February 2025 — it works with state-owned oil and gas giant Petrobras’s CSR program to carry out ecological restoration activities in mangroves and salt marshes
There’s a focus on replanting native species and removing invasive ones; environmental education and social mobilization through seminars
meetings and collective actions; and two scientific studies on carbon sequestration and sea level rise
Activities under the project have been carried out in conservation units and surrounding areas of Serra do Tabuleiro State Park (in Palhoça municipality)
Carijós Ecological Station and Pirajubaé Extractive Reserve (Florianópolis)
and Morro dos Cavalos Indigenous Land (Palhoça)
The conservation and restoration activities in Palhoça cover a total area 10 hectares (nearly 25 acres)
comprising 7 hectares (17 acres) of mangroves on two islands in the Madre River and the Maciambu River
3 hectares (7 acres) of salt marshes surrounding the visitor center at Serra do Tabuleiro State Park
The direct benefits of restoration create indirect benefits that can promote the protection and resilience of 55 hectares (136 acres) of mangroves
you stop doing several activities and that affects the system as a whole
you have a healthy body.” The same concept of resilience
boosts the positive effects of on-site conservation
The team says it hopes to expand and strengthen protection of the mangroves and salt marshes with the participation of community members; 600 people were involved in the first year
and 2,000 are expected to have participated by the end of the project
the project kicked off with a seminar at its launch in the state legislature
followed by eight ecological restoration workshops
other workshops on how to fight forest fires
and a theoretical and practical training course on citizen science development for managers and teachers
These in turn have resulted in the development of further initiatives in the communities surrounding Carijós Ecological Station
Pirajubaé Extractive Reserve and Serra do Tabuleiro State Park
The training series will include two more phases this year and will culminate in a seminar to present the outcome of the project
Ongoing training on honey production using stingless bees is also underway for four villages in Morro dos Cavalos Indigenous Territory
With support from UFSC’s graduate studies program in oceanography
two studies are being carried out under the project to better understand the contribution of mangrove conservation and restoration to the mitigation of and adaptation to climate change
In addition to threatening mangroves with rising sea levels
the increase in the global temperature is expanding tropical areas
causing mangroves to advance toward the south of the state
Master’s students are currently comparing the potential for carbon sequestration and storage in natural mangroves and those growing in the landfills of the Greater Florianópolis area
they’ve collected soil samples from four mangrove areas: two natural ones and two from the artificially created landfills
The study aims to find out whether mangroves in the latter
human-generated ecosystem have the same carbon-absorbing capacity as natural ones
“Mangrove soil has a high carbon storage capacity
which is why we chose to focus our main analysis on soil rather than roots and leaves,” says Aline Zanetti
Mangroves accumulate 50-90% of their carbon in the soil
The waterlogged soil gives rise to a low-oxygen environment
which means that the organic matter that piles up here — leaves
dead animals — don’t decompose as quickly as they would in the open air
thus keeping the carbon they hold in the soil for longer
It’s this waterlogged property that makes coastal ecosystems much more effective carbon sinks than terrestrial forests
the researchers will also collect samples of mangrove roots to see if there’s a difference in the carbon stock potential of created and natural mangrove roots
The other study being carried out under the project is at the doctoral level
and aims to quantify changes in coastal flooding patterns in the Greater Florianópolis area based on projections of future climate change impacts
The research effort is developing a geographic database of the area that will also contribute to the project’s assessment
The mapping is also expected to help support studies on vulnerability and future occupation in the area
The researchers plan to publish their results in a scientific journal and also in a book about the mangroves of southern Brazil
“Based on spatial analyses conducted through remote sensing and geoprocessing
we compared this information with public policies: basin plans
and coastal management,” says Luiz Pimenta
a geographer and doctoral candidate working on the project
Pimenta and his team’s analysis of city master plans show that urban expansion zones are located precisely in flood-prone areas
which is related to an increase in the planet’s temperature
the more these extreme events such as rain
tornadoes and coastal erosion will intensify
and public policy is creating future scenarios that are disaster scenarios,” Pimenta says
“The projections for occupation of areas are scary.”
In Santa Catarina’s hydrographic region 08
which covers 22 municipalities centered around the Greater Florianópolis area
60% of urban zones already suffer from flooding as a result of rainfall
“The risk for coastal cities is the increase in these heavy rainfall events
with the curves of extreme events going from 300 mm to 700 mm [12 in to 28 in] of rainfall
as well as rising sea levels,” Pimenta says
“Thinking that cities are growing and that there will be more people living in flood zones
the tendency is to increase the vulnerability of communities unless effective public prevention policies are created to change that.”
Climate adaptation and mitigation measures include nature-based solutions
rehabilitation and restoration of ecosystems vulnerable to extreme events
and the creation of mechanisms and means for communities to face these types of event
The latter include so-called non-structuring actions such as environmental education
and structuring ones such as building seawalls and embankments
Project proponents say investment is needed in research
such as that being conducted under this project
Knowledge of the carbon stock potential and rehabilitation and restoration of mangroves is key for developing strategies for coastal cities like Florianópolis to mitigate against and adapt to the worst impacts of climate change
in addition to protecting the biodiversity of a unique ecosystem and contributing to the sustainability of the ways of life of traditional communities

The opportunities for friends and family to spectate and enjoy the action are second-to-none
making this a fantastic option for a race/holiday combo
good luck trying to book this one for yourself
Florianópolis is the capital of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina on the south coastline of the country
also known as the Ilha da Magia (Magic Island)
is renowned for its natural beauty and a coastline dotted with exquisite beaches – about 100 in total
So it’s hardly surprising that it’s one of Brazil’s most popular destinations for overseas travellers
Paradise-like location with an abundance of beaches and natural beauty
A PB-worthy race course to help you reach new speeds
the opportunity to qualify for Challenge The Championship
There’s plenty of reasons to add Challenge Florianopolis to your early season race calendar
Get ready to smash some middle-distance PBs
as the Florianopolis course is pancake flat
well for one you won’t want to overcook it for the run
you really don’t want to miss the stunning scenery
The one-lap swim sets off at sunrise from Jurerê Internacional beach with a mass start in calm waters
There’s just a single transition zone to make pre-race planning logistically easier
The one-lap bike leg is predominantly flat and fast and takes athletes along the coastline before entering the busy tourist areas of Florianópolis
Again it’s just a one-lap run to conclude the race
and again it’s flat along the Beira-Mar Norte coastline before you reach the finish line for a traditional Brazilian welcome filled with music and entertainment
The Challenge Florianopolis course offers up a fast
flat course – primed with personal best potential
so a focus on pacing in training is essential
And as it’s a sea swim – albeit a calm one – some prior sea-swimming practice is a must
While average air temperatures aren’t too toasty in early April in Brazil they might be considerably warmer than where you’re based
so acclimating to warm conditions will only aid your performance
also consider your fluid and fuel consumption
If you’re able to arrive several days before the race then you can of course train on the course – you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to local beaches for swimming
and the Beira-Mar Norte promenade for running
Florianopolis airport is well connected with direct flights from Lisbon
There are also regular domestic flights from Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro that take approximately one hour
Florianopolis has plenty of choice when it comes to where to stay
From casual beach front family-friendly hotels
Jurerê Internacional is the centre of all the race day action so it’s worth searching for a hotel close by to make race weekend as relaxed as possible
the best way for athletes to get around is via public buses and taxis
Keep an eye on the official website for any event-specific transport arrangements
Jurerê Internacional beach will also be provided closer to the event date
The course in Florianopolis is ideal for spectators
making this a great destination for all the family
The best viewing spots for the swim is along Jurerê Internacional beach near the swim start; for the bike there will be key intersections and designated spectator zones along the course; and for the run there will be areas near the transition zone and along the Beira-Mar Norte promenade for friends and family to gather
there’s a Junior Challenge and a sprint-distance triathlon to keep them entertained
If competing in a middle-distance triathlon isn’t enough for you
then there are plenty of other adventure sports on offer during your stay in Brazil
From hiking and trails to kitesurfing and canoeing
Florianopolis is a fantastic destination for outdoor activities
a beautiful lagoon offering water sports and dining options
Santo Antônio de Lisboa is also not to be missed – a historic bohemian neighborhood known for its colonial architecture and seafood restaurants
And another highlight of the island is Ponte Hercílio Luz – an iconic suspension bridge and symbol of the city
Even though you’ll have raced off Jurerê Internacional beach
be sure to visit it again for a day of rest and relaxation on one of the world’s most beautiful stretches of sand
then why not see how many of Florianopolis’s 100 beaches you can tick off before your flight home?
Experience a 1.9 km swim along Brazil’s stunning coastline
and a 21.1 km run with breath-taking views

Bridge House offers 21st-century minimalism and long sea views on the island of Florianópolis off the southern coast of Brazil
Set on the edge of the island of Florianópolis, Bridge House (also known as Casa Ponte) was conceived as a direct response to its striking environment. Its location off the southern coast of Brazil means a verdant setting and nature-infused views stretching from crystal clear blue waters to rich
leafy mountains are among the site's key assets – an aspect the residence's architects
took to the extreme when designing this retreat for a private client
The house takes its name from the island's three bridges
Located some 800m from the Brazilian mainland
these key items of infrastructure – the Hercílio Luz Bridge possibly being the most famous of the three – connect this small piece of land in the South Atlantic to the rest of the country
while also being a powerful symbol of the region
The home feels seemingly simple in its volumes and composition - a clean
minimalist rectangular 'box' containing an open plan living space that spills out to a lavish terrace offering long-reaching vistas of the water ahead
it's a finely tuned piece of architecture that took research and hours of meticulous planning to get right
We spend hours observing the angles of the house and the change of the landscapes throughout the day,' says Oltramari
provided plenty of inspiration – echoed in the long
linear and elegantly minimalist form of the swimming pool deck
it also brings inside the scenario revealed from its interior,' says Carlos Maia
This balance and pared-down approach to volumes only made the architectural experience richer
and the same applies to the architects' attitude towards the sun and negotiating the region's strong light
'This house needed a cap,' says Igor Macedo
The result was a 6m-long roof overhang that shades the living spaces and creates a comfortable outdoor area to lounge and take in the vistas
which was sold as scrap at public auctions in the early 2000s
These have now been revived and placed in the home
escapism and design stories from around the world direct to your inbox
But all it took was some sandpaper and a coat of varnish to revive them and return to their original state,' says the owner
'But better than buying a work of art for a symbolic value
it was preventing this piece of Brazilian design history
now so valued in galleries around the world
21st-century aesthetics and high functionality
Bridge House offers a contemporary blend for a state-of-the-art holiday escape
but it also needs to produce the beauty that moves people,' says Tetro Architecture's third partner

After visiting 37 countries and multiple continents around the world
I feel at home when exploring the continent's vibrant countries, whether I'm enjoying local cuisine or trekking through the Andes.
Having spent nearly a year traveling the region, I've crossed popular attractions like Iguazu Falls and Machu Picchu off my list
I've also had the chance to discover lesser-known destinations that are equally as enchanting
Chile is an absolute paradise for adventurous travelers
from the north's otherworldly desert to the south's jagged Patagonian peaks
Many travelers flock to its chic cities along the coast
such as colorful Valparaíso or world-renowned Torres del Paine National Park
is the true adventure capital of the country
The lakefront city has incredible white-water rafting
Perhaps the most intrepid pursuit, though, is a climb of Pucón's Villarrica volcano — among the most active in all of South America
Visitors can reach Villarrica's crater on guided day tours
where spurting lava can be visible from above with the naked eye
Despite its popularity among domestic and Argentine tourists
Brazil's city of Florianópolis still doesn't seem to be on the radar of many North American travelers
Florianópolis is affectionately known as the "Island of Magic" and is home to over 40 beaches
Each of the island's beaches offers a distinct vibe
from the family-friendly Daniela Beach to the trendy surfing spot Praia Mole
Its less-populated southern area has some of the island's most remote and stunning beaches
which is only accessible by boat or on foot
visitors can wander through the Portuguese-influenced town of Santo Antônio de Lisboa
taste fresh oysters at the downtown market
and explore Brazil's nightlife in the hip Lagoa da Conceição neighborhood
In my opinion, Florianópolis offers the best of Brazil in one package
Ushuaia, Argentina's southernmost city, is the most common port for cruises to Antarctica
Yet although thousands of cruisers pass through Ushuaia each year
few stay long enough to truly appreciate the region's attractions
walkable streets lined with outdoor gear shops
Just over 7 miles from downtown is Tierra del Fuego National Park
with over 20 miles of beautiful hiking trails
from Fuegian foxes to even penguins at nearby Martillo Island
Places like Machu Picchu and Cusco may take the top spots on travelers' Peru itineraries
Known as the "White City," Arequipa's colonial-era buildings were constructed with white volcanic stone
making the city's historic center as bright as it is beautiful
Expect Arequipa's Plaza de Armas — the main square — to bustle with activity at any time of day
Those interested in Andean history should visit the Andean Sanctuaries Museum
The city also provides easy access to Colca Canyon
It's a popular day trip for tourists in the region
Arequipa has hundreds of thousands of fewer tourists than Cusco each year
and beautiful nature are absolutely worth seeing in person
