Another busy day of lacrosse and basketball: not atypical for the Gaspar family
Sunday includes a lacrosse tournament in Springfield for Jordan Gaspar
a select number of his classmates will play for the school’s first boys basketball championship in Lowell
“We’re hoping to go from one to the other,” Jen Gaspar said Thursday
The need to dash to the Tsongas Center comes down to more than simply supporting the local team
was a basketball and lacrosse player before he was diagnosed with a brain tumor on May 14
basketball and Franklin communities have since embraced the family tight as a bear hug
nearly after two years after Nick died on May 19
Fundraising basketball games and tournaments in Nick’s honor have dotted the calendar and NickStrong isn’t merely a hashtag
“It doesn’t seem like two years; it doesn’t get any easier,” said Jen Gaspar
“But I will say the entire community – especially the high school – has made it more bearable.”
One of the first events to aid the family happened on Jan. 21, 2022, when Franklin’s basketball team hosted Milford
a fitting color since Nick Gaspar’s favorite basketball team was the University of North Carolina
Students also sold #NickStrong wristbands that night
Gates, a Franklin High football player and a classmate of Jordan and Nick Gaspar
“These kids have gone through a lot – they've lost two classmates,” Jen Gaspar said
“That’s obviously a lot for any adult to handle
Jen Gaspar made her first trip to the University of North Carolina in September (the rest of the family had visited previously)
The school was important to Nick and someone ingeniously changed the NC logo to NG
which became ubiquitous for the Nick Strong Foundation
That September visit included a Dribble for Victory Over Cancer fundraiser and Nick’s memory was honored
The family toured the campus and attended a football game
“Doing things that he loved is sometimes helpful,” she said
“Just keeping his memory alive is the most important thing.”
The family - which also includes daughter Lillian, Jen and Tim Gaspar’s youngest child - has worked through the Nick Strong Foundation to keep Nick’s story alive
“is to honor our son and keep his legacy alive by raising awareness and helping others who are faced with the horrific news that their child has cancer.”
Jen aspires to provide the same amount of love and support her family received
whether through a financial donation or a simple gift to help “make their day.”
“I can’t imagine having gone through that without all of the love and support
I really hope that every family has that; they deserve it,” she said
“It’s nothing you never want to go through alone
Even for my other two children – they needed support when we weren’t around for them
Nick was diagnosed at Boston Children’s Hospital and Jen Gaspar is running the Boston Marathon again this spring to raise money for BCH
a motion no longer possible for Nick Gaspar and Anthony Gates
“It’s hard because (Jordan is) doing all the things that Nick should be doing as well
He’s fortunate to have such great friends to go through this with
but it’s difficult knowing that Nick and another one of his classmates don’t get to graduate and they’re not here
Will a long trip from Springfield end happily
basketball and a long-sought state championship
They’ve been through a lot,” Jen Gaspar said
“I think they deserve the win and it would be great to see that for them.”

Collision Involving 12 Motorcycles and Another Car Occurred on Highway 98 West of Calexico on Nov
CALEXICO — After being released from custody late last week
the San Diego man arrested on five counts of murder in connection with a 2010 traffic collision involving a pack of motorcyclists on Highway 98 west of Calexico was re-arrested on Monday morning
and is awaiting extradition to Imperial County
Imperial County District Attorney’s Office and El Centro area California Highway Patrol were able to obtain a “no bail” arrest warrant signed by a judge ordering Luis A
He was booked into the Vista Detention Facility in San Diego County awaiting transfer to Imperial County jail
according to a California Highway Patrol press release
Gaspar is suspected of five counts of murder and 11 counts of hit-and-run driving causing death or injury
His initial arrest on Willow Creek Road in San Diego on Dec
18 stems from a September 2023 anonymous tip prompting a yearlong investigation by the Highway Patrol
Gaspar is alleged to be the driver of a gold Honda Civic that on Nov
passed a pack of 12 motorcycles on eastbound Highway 98
to go out of control and slide into the bikes
which were part of the Saddletramps motorcycle club from San Diego County
which was celebrating its 10th anniversary with the ride
Gaspar had to be released from custody on Friday
Imperial County District Attorney George Marquez said his office lacked evidence at the time to bring the case to court
He explained that the statute of limitations has run out on lesser charges
forcing the DA’s office to need a tighter case
Marquez told the Calexico Chronicle that “the case is still under investigation,” adding his office only received a 150-page report on Friday morning
Killed in the accident were four from the biker group — George Williams
of Alpine — and the passenger of the car forced into the riders
No other information was immediately available
“The CHP extends its gratitude to the Imperial County District Attorney’s Office
the Department of Homeland Security Investigations
California Highway Patrol Investigative Services Unit
Border Division and the California Department of Insurance for assisting with this investigation,” according to the CHP press release

FRANKLIN – The teams were not just thrown together
The field did not simply consist of a non-league school to the north; a South Coast school from 50 miles away; a Catholic school in nearby Westwood
New Bedford is near to where the father of the tournament’s namesake starred in high school
And Xaverian has a close connection to the late Nick Gaspar and his family
Three months before he died of brain cancer, Nick, 16, served as honorary captain when the Franklin boys basketball team hosted the Hawks – who wore “NG” t-shirts that night in February of 2023
His team was back in town for the Nick Gaspar Invitational
winning the title on Tuesday afternoon and handing Franklin its first loss of the season
Sheenan lives near the Gaspar family in Franklin - “I can hit a pitching wedge to their house from my house,” he said – and was proud to be a part of the second annual tournament
“It’s something we all have a connection to one way or another,” he said
“but just to be able to support their family – and as a Franklin resident
it’s always a great thing to be a part of.”
Franklin coach CJ Neely was happy to see the many powder blue “NG” t-shirts again among the crowd
Gaspar the Great: Franklin High boys basketball team beats Milford High on Nick Gaspar Night
who has played men’s league basketball against Sheehan
“The Gaspars are great people and Nick was a great kid and we really miss him and the kids really miss him
To have an opportunity to honor him every year – it makes you feel good to bring these types of teams together
“It’s not just a random collection of four teams,” Neely said
“It’s four teams that are really engaged in that kind of cause.”
Caden Sullivan’s outburst early in the second half seemingly had Franklin off to another victory. The senior captain scored nine points in just over three minutes and fellow captain Seth O’Donnell’s second 3-pointer of the game had the Panthers up 33-22 with 2 minutes
But Manny Duran had a spurt of his own. The senior from Norwood – and tournament MVP – scored eight of his game-high 15 points in the third as the Hawks (10-10) slowly came back
Thacher Purdy’s 3-pointer with just under three minutes remaining in the game put Xaverian
ahead to stay in a fourth quarter where Franklin (21-1) was held without a field goal
just chip away,” Sheehan said of his thought process when his team fell behind by double digits
“We’ve found ourselves in that situation a few times this season
and we’ve had a couple where we wilted away
I was proud that the kids didn’t give in.”
“Xaverian does a really good job with their zone (defense),” Neely said
They’re one of the best in the state at what they do.”
Duran’s layup with a minute left put the Hawks ahead 40-36 before Jake Olmstead (8 points) made two free throws with 52 seconds to go
Joe Conlan’s steal with 22 seconds remaining gave Franklin one last possession
but an open Sullivan (14 points) had his 3-point attempt catch front iron before the final buzzer sounded
“We had a great look from our best player,” Neely said
I probably would have drawn up a play probably to get Caden the ball
1 seed for the MIAA Division 1 tournament when playoff pairings are announced Saturday at 1 p.m
The Panthers were also a one-loss team heading into last year’s postseason
3 and fell to Worcester North in the state final
But with eight seniors graduated from that squad
Neely said redemption isn’t a huge motivating factor this time around
“This group of seniors has been waiting their turn
you’re still 21-1 and you had a terrific season.’ Now we have to hit the reset button
We have to play the type of basketball that got us to this point

A vibrant soul whose presence lit up any room
she danced her way into our hearts when she was born in Rutherford County
As Emory brightened the lives of her teachers and friends of Arcadia Elementary School
she was such a joy to see in the hallways and classrooms
She was a recent 2024 Graduate of Dorman High School.
Emory's love for music and dance was infectious
Her native Mexican music filled the air wherever she went
spreading happiness to all those around her while she sang and danced
She carried herself with grace and beauty that touched the hearts of many
dreaming of owning her own bed and breakfast venue one day
Her bright spirit and ambitious nature shone through as she walked through life
Emory was known for making every place she entered brighter and more welcoming.
Family was at the center of Emory's world
She was a devoted big sister to her three- year-old brother
Jaziel Martinez and loved spending time with Jesus and the rest of her family
She was joined in death by her big brother
we also celebrate the vibrant life she lived
Her memory will forever be imprinted in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her
The family will receive friends during a visitation that will be held on July 31
from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel
let us hold onto the beautiful memories we shared with Emory and find solace in knowing that her spirit lives on in each life she touched
May she rest in eternal peace surrounded by the love she so freely gave during her time here with us
Collaborative care points the way to the future
Vascular surgeons are used to collaborating
Since the vascular system reaches every part of the body
it’s normal for vascular surgeons to work closely with other specialists
But this year’s Gaspar Symposium takes that principle even further
with a broad vision of revolutionary leaps through collaborative care
“Crossing boundaries is the way forward,” said Kenneth Ziegler
the faculty course director for this year’s symposium
“When we get out of the silo and partner with everyone
we can give our patients the best in modern medical care.”
Ziegler was careful to point out that collaboration with medical professionals at all levels is key to this vision
“This is all about the importance of forging new pathways,” he explained
“Nurses and Advanced Practice Providers have their own expertise and unique perspectives
When surgeons recognize our own limitations and ask for their insight
we can make massive advances just by talking.”
This year’s topics include the nationally famous collaborative work done at USC’s Aortic Center
the limb-saving multidisciplinary work of the Division of Vascular Surgery’s Toe and Flow program
and even social science approaches to looking at care disparities
the Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy
was also enthusiastic about the 2024 program
we are thrilled to have the event bringing together leading experts and innovators from multiple fields focusing on improving the care of patients affected by vascular diseases
We are honored to have Dr Gilbert R Upchurch as our distinguished visiting professor
Upchurch is the chair of the department of surgery at the University of Florida
He will provide us with the Guideline Updates AHA/ACC Joint Committee Report on Thoracic Aortic Endografting for Descending Thoracic Aneurysms during the symposium
We look forward to welcoming you to this exciting event.”
Ziegler noted that residents and medical students who are considering vascular surgery will find this year’s Gaspar Symposium especially valuable
“This is a portal to what their practices will be like in the future.”

Edu Gaspar has resigned a Arsenal's sporting director
The 46-year-old initially arrived as the Gunners' technical director in the summer of 2019 and was instrumental in the hiring of Mikel Arteta as head coach later that year
A member of Arsenal's legendary Invincibles team
Edu is in line for a position at the network of clubs that includes Nottingham Forest
owned by Greek businessman Evangelos Marinakis
Should he take that role it is expected he would receive a sizable increase on his salary at the Emirates Stadium
"This was an incredibly hard decision to make," said Edu
"Arsenal has given me the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and the chance to be a part of something so special in the club's history
"Now it is time to pursue a different challenge
I wish the club and its supporters only good things and all the very best."
who as a permanent member of staff could be required to serve a notice period or be placed on gardening leave
His exit comes at a significant moment for the club
now established as contenders for the Premier League and Champions League under Arteta
Edu had previously worked as general co-ordinator of the Brazil national team and in a senior role at Corinthians
the club where he began his professional career
His departure is a matter of some surprise to sources with knowledge of his situation
Edu had been coveted by rival clubs for several years but had rebuffed past interest
most notably when Paris Saint-Germain came knocking in 2022
He is settled in London and took great pride in the progress that Arsenal had made in his five years with them
It had been thought that he would remain in his position for at least another 12 months following the departure of chief executive Vinai Venkatesham in the summer

A triumvirate that included Arteta had built a strong bond in the rebuild of Arsenal
All three were either entirely new to or relatively inexperienced in the positions they occupied and found an alchemy to their working
It will be a challenge to try to create that again with two of the three gone in a short space of time
Any new sporting director will have to mesh with Arteta
Owner Stan Kroenke will be conscious of how that turmoil that followed the departures of Arsene Wenger and Ivan Gazidis in 2018 was reflected on the pitch in the months that followed
find themselves in an altogether better footballing position now than then
"We respect Edu's decision and thank him for his immense contribution and dedication to drive the club forward," said co-chair Josh Kroenke
We are all so fond of him and the positive energy he brings to everything and everyone
"Change and evolution is a part of our club
We remain focused on our strategy and winning major trophies
Our succession plan will reflect this continued ambition."
managing director Richard Garlick and executive vice-chair Tim Lewis are expected to assess candidates for the vacancy
though given the surprise with which this has taken Arsenal it may be some time before a successor is found
When he joined the club on their summer tour in 2019 -- earlier than his new employers had required or even hoped -- he found a club floored by its failure to make the Champions League with a wage bill well out of whack with the standard of performance
In his five years Arsenal were trimmed back
now competing for the greatest prizes in football
No one could contend that Edu won't be leaving Arsenal better than he found them
Perhaps the most radical move he took in managing the Arsenal squad came in the early years of Arteta's tenure
The vision was clear -- enough that the club hierarchy stood by the then-manager amid disastrous results in 2020 -- but many of the veterans were not able to put it into practice
Willian and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were among those whose contracts were terminated
not without cost to Arsenal when they weren't delivering as expected
Some of those mistakes were on Edu and Arteta
They were not afraid to address them swiftly
That speaks to the growth Edu made in his time with the club
Utterly inexperienced in European football's corridors of power early in his tenure
his recruitment was far from stellar at the outset
One source who worked alongside him spoke of how he "developed a steel to him" as time went on
"He's somebody who will represent the club in the right way
But you know in a negotiation he will go toe to toe with anybody."
Such steeliness got big deals done for Arsenal
Much has been made of Arteta's sales pitches to the likes of Declan Rice
but behind the scenes Edu was the one tasked with completing the arduous club-to-club negotiations
Those who have worked with him have spoken of the Brazilian's ability to complete deals that leave everyone feeling like a winner
That would be a quality to serve him well if he finds himself running a multi-club organization
This would appear to be where the best of the best are now heading
Jurgen Klopp will head up Red Bull's soccer department
Michael Edwards was lured back to Anfield as Fenway Sports Group's CEO of football
Edu's work at Arsenal has propelled him into that echelon
Finding a comparable replacement will be a challenge almost as great
attends his official presentation as a new player for the Valencia soccer team at Mestalla Stadium

LONDON (AP) — Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar has resigned
The former midfielder returned to the club as technical director in 2019 before being promoted to sporting director in 2022
and has been seen as a key figure in Arsenal’s emergence as a Premier League challenger under manager Mikel Arteta in recent seasons
Edu said he was leaving to pursue “a different challenge” but did not specify what that would entail
“This was an incredibly hard decision to make,” Edu said in a club statement
“Arsenal has given me the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and the chance to be a part of something so special in the club’s history
Now it is time to pursue a different challenge
I wish the club and its supporters only good things and all the very best.”
Arsenal co-chair Josh Kroenke said the club respected Edu’s decision and noted his “immense contribution and dedication to drive the club forward.”
Kroenke added: “Change and evolution is a part of our club
We remain focused on our strategy and winning major trophies
Our succession plan will reflect this continued ambition.”
Edu played 127 times for the Gunners and featured in Arsene Wenger’s “Invincibles,”who went the entire 2003-04 season unbeaten
Gaspar Noé has never been one to shy away from controversy
The Argentine filmmaker carved out a name for himself with provocative and boundary-pushing films like I Stand Alone (1998) and Irréversible (2002)
which firmly placed him at the forefront of the New French Extremity movement during the 2000s
But the news that he has just joined the jury of an AI film festival may be his most controversial move
is described on its website as “a celebration of the art and artists embracing new and emerging AI tools for filmmaking.” However
the use of artificial intelligence in film has sparked fierce debate
with many prominent figures in the industry voicing their opposition
The rise of AI was even one of the central issues behind the writers’ strike in 2023
which brought film production across the United States to a standstill
The controversy surrounding AI in cinema was further fuelled this year when two major Oscar contenders
faced backlash after revealing they had used AI tools to manipulate accents and singing voices
The revelation nearly derailed both films’ awards campaigns and led to calls for stricter regulations with some suggesting that the disclosure of AI use should become mandatory for future Academy Award contenders
Although Noé has not indicated whether he plans to use AI in his own future projects
his reputation for pushing artistic boundaries means that few would be surprised if he embraced the technology

Industry distributors share the promo products that they love the most
My prized merch possession is my Stasher bag
It’s simple yet incredibly practical and it fits perfectly into my eco-conscious
I first became aware of Stasher bags when I received one as a giveaway at an Earth Day event that was held in my community
I’m thrilled that this is now being offered in our industry by Hit Promotional Products (asi/61125) and can be branded
I literally have about 35 of them in all different sizes
I use them every day whether it’s for packing snacks for myself or my family
or even organizing small travel items or putting my phone in it to go the beach
It’s a go-to item that definitely never sits idle in my house
but the Stasher bag symbolizes my commitment to reducing waste
it’s durable and has saved me from using countless disposable plastic bags
which we all know is terrible for the environment
I love the commitment Stasher has to reducing waste and to using products that are alternatives to single-use plastics
One memorable moment was using the bag on a hiking trip earlier this year – it kept all of my snacks fresh and secure
and it also ended up doubling as a water-resistant pouch for my phone when it started pouring halfway through the hike
Promo products like Stasher bags are powerful because they combine functionality with a company’s brand identity
They create a lasting impression when they provide real value
such as reducing waste or enhancing convenience
They also resonate emotionally when they align with a person’s values
which encourages continued use and brand loyalty
A well-chosen product becomes part of people’s daily lives

(1:10)Gab & Juls discuss the impact of Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar
Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar has resigned from his post, the club confirmed in a statement on Monday
Edu joined Arsenal in July 2019 as technical director and led a culture shift at the club that saw Mikel Arteta hired as manager and the side battle for the Premier League title in the past two seasons
Edu was later promoted to become the club's first-ever sporting director in November 2022
The Brazilian's tenure as director came after a four-year playing career between 2001 and 2005
during which he won the Premier League title in 2001-02 and 2003-04 under Arsene Wenger
Sources have told ESPN that Edu has been approached by Nottingham Forest and Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis to lead their multi-club group with an offer that would include a considerably increased salary
Sources added that talks are at an advanced stage with Edu keen on taking up the position
Edu communicated his decision to senior club officials at Arsenal's London Colney training ground on Monday morning
with many being surprised at the move given the central role he has played in the north London team's resurgence
A source added that it is currently unclear whether there is anything in the terms of his departure which would delay him from taking up another job
"This was an incredibly hard decision to make," Edu said
"I've loved working with so many great colleagues across our men's
Arsenal co-chair Josh Kroenke said in the statement: "We respect Edu's decision and thank him for his immense contribution and dedication to drive the club forward

with multiple sources confirming the departure of Edu Gaspar as the club's sporting director
It was news no Arsenal supporter expected to wake up to on Monday morning
The Athletic's David Ornstein is among those to validate the story
with details persistently emerging regarding the reasons why the Brazilian and former Gunner is leaving his post
who spent four years in north London as a player
joined the club's hierarchy and was appointed Arsenal's first-ever technical director in 2020
He's credited for playing a huge role in the Gunners' rise under Mikel Arteta
with the director helping the novice coach oversee a drastic culture shift in N5
He was credited for some savvy work in the transfer market which aided Arsenal's ascent under Arteta
but his work on that front has come under scrutiny in recent windows
It remains to be seen just how much their summer business will aid their pursuit of the Premier League title
while Edu also found it difficult throughout his tenure to sell assets at the right time
the director's absence will serve as a notable blow to the club
but his exit doesn't point towards any signs of off-field dysfunction amid a tricky period for Arteta's side on the pitch
Edu was bullish over the appointment of Arteta in 2020
with his impressive work as technical director seeing him change titles and become sporting director in 2022
the Brazilian is said to harbour even grander ambitions for his post-playing career which is believed to have played a big role in his exit
Edu is poised to leave his post at Arsenal in favour of teaming up with infamous Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis and his network of clubs
Marinakis also owns the likes of Marseille
and we could see Edu take on an all-encompassing role on the recruitment front within that framework
An agreement is in place for Edu to take on the fresh challenge under Marinakis, but his exact role has not yet been ironed out. However, there are reports that the Greek businessman would be willing to triple Edu's salary and hand him more power than what he could've ever been afforded at Arsenal. According to the Independent
the 46-year-old wished to work his way up into a CEO-type of role in north London
but that was a position the Gunners weren't yet willing to bestow upon their sporting director
Whatever you think of the signings in the summer
Edu is a massive part of why Mikel Arteta has been able to bring Arsenal back to competing
It’s bad news and people celebrating him leaving are strange
You're bound to see speculation over more nefarious factors at play in Edu's imminent exit
but the Brazilian's decision to move on doesn't point towards instability or internal strife
and Marinakis is willing to hand him the power Arsenal currently weren't
We can run the rule over all of his transfer dealings as much as we want
but no amount of revisionism should detract from the work Edu's done in his directorial roles
He's been a significant spoke in the Mikel Arteta wheel
It's paramount the club nail the appointment of his successor

former Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar rejected a similar offer to stay at his Emirates Stadium role
The news has now been fully digested. Edu Gaspar is leaving Arsenal
after a successful five year stint at the club
He begun life as Arsenal's first ever technical director
but then became Arsenal's first ever sporting director
Now, Arsenal will undergo a period of transition. They will seek the right person to come in and replace the club legend Edu, with the help of manager Mikel Arteta
they might not like hearing about an offer from Arsenal which the Brazilian rejected
According to a report from the Daily Mail
Arsenal offered a new contract to Edu Gaspar after hearing about his offer from Nottingham Forest (among other clubs)
It is said that Arsenal's offer was comparable to that presented by Evangelos Marinakis
This might not be nice for Arsenal fans to hear but it does show that Edu's decision wasn't entirely money driven
He is taking the next step in his career and he would like to work in a global capacity
rather than ditching Arsenal for solely financial gain
Edu demonstrated a keen and knowledgable approach to improving a football club
his expertise and beaming personality will be appreciated within his new network of clubs
On the flip side, the Brazilian will be missed at Arsenal but his legacy will continue to live on. During his time, he signed many great players
