The radioactive source involved in the 1987 Goiânia accident

In 1987
where a radioactive capsule had been abandoned
People later found what they believed to be scrap metal and sold it on
beginning a sequence of events that would lead to the screening of over 112,000 residents for radioactive contamination
The Goiânia accident began when a private radiotherapy institute was moving premises and left behind a piece of equipment
and something they were required by license to inform the authorities about – but they didn’t
The radioactive equipment remained onsite during the premises’ demolition
where it was later discovered by two people who thought it might have some scrap value
Not realizing what they were about to pick up
they carried the hunk of metal home and tried to dismantle it
“The radioactive source was in the form of caesium chloride salt, which is highly soluble and readily dispersible,” reads an initial report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
with one result being the external irradiation and internal contamination of several persons
Thus began one of the most serious radiological accidents ever to have occurred.”

they began selling off its parts whereupon one buyer noticed that something about his purchase was making it glow blue in the dark
The curious sight lured in many friends and family who wanted to get a look at the thing
and people were taking home samples the size of rice grains
It was around five days later that people first started showing symptoms
They began as gastrointestinal issues that initially weren’t recognized as being the result of irradiation
but when someone eventually presented the capsule to the public health department
the severity of the situation became apparent
A stadium became a temporary holding area for contaminated and injured people
and in total around 112,000 people were monitored
249 of which were found to have been contaminated either externally or internally
Blood results from 110 people involved in the Goiânia accident revealed radiation exposures ranging from zero to 7 Gy
and while there are medications that can be given for cesium exposure
the damage it does to our tissues means even survivors may later develop diseases
“Cesium-137 enters the body through ingestion or inhalation,” reads a study published in the journal Clinical Toxicology
“This isotope emits beta and gamma radiation
both forms of ionizing radiation which damage living tissues.”
“The radiation dose lethal to 50% of an exposed population within 60 days (LD50/60) is approximately 3.5 to 4 Gray (Gy) without medical intervention
this dose increases to around 6-7 Gy when medical support is provided
granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor
thereby facilitating its elimination from the body.”

Luca Marini praises Brazil’s interest in MotoGP but says Goiania circuit needs "a lot of work" before 2026 debut
Luca Marini This time next year, if all goes to plan, the Ayrton Senna Circuit in Goiania, Brazil, will have hosted its very first MotoGP event
Due to join the calendar from 2026 as part of a five-year deal
the new South American round is expected to be paired logistically with either Argentina or Austin - which were rounds two and three on this year’s schedule
But before Brazil returns to motorcycle grand prix for the first time since 2004
the Goiania track must undergo substantial upgrades to meet MotoGP's safety and facility standards
That’s the view of Honda’s Luca Marini
to compete demo laps at the circuit during a special visit between Termas and COTA
on the track and the facilities,” said Marini
we hope everything will be ready,” he added
“They promised us that they are pushing a lot
because there is a lot of interest to make this race
maybe a little bit short for a MotoGP bike
“So it means we need good runoff areas because the layout is pretty fast and the lap time will be super short.”
The Italian described the track as “even shorter” than the Sachsenring but
expects it to have a “super high” average speed
“There are some small corners that slow down the average speed
because then everything will be much better.”
Asked about specific areas needing attention
and also speaking with Carlos and Carmelo [Ezpeleta]
they are super happy about the job that they are doing
“For sure I expect a track inspection from Loris [Capirossi] or from someone else some months before [the race] to understand a little bit the situation

MotoGP has signed a new five-year deal to return to Brazil at the Goiania circuit from 2026
After a 20-year absence from the South American country
MotoGP bosses have signed an agreement with Brazil Motorsport
the same company that organises the Formula 1 Brazilian GP
which is set to cover 2026-30 at the Goiania circuit
The Brazilian track hosted MotoGP between 1987-89
before the Brazilian GP returned to the calendar in 1992 at Interlagos
Jacarepagua staged what was called the Rio de Janeiro GP until the round fell off the calendar
Goiania will undergo extensive renovations throughout the first half of next year
including increasing the run-off areas throughout the track and completely renovating the circuit's paddock area in preparation for homologation approval to join the MotoGP calendar from 2026
“We are very much looking forward to returning to Brazil,” Carmelo Ezpeleta
Extensive renovation is planned for the Goiania circuit which hosts Brazil's stock car series
“We have a good fanbase who we know are excited about this news
“Brazil is a global player and somewhere we have always believed deserves a space on our calendar
Working with the government of Goias and Brasil Motorsport
The deal could see MotoGP make two visits to South America
with the Argentina GP on the 2025 schedule
but the Termas de Rio Hondo race’s deal expires after next season – meaning it’d need a new contract to remain on the calendar alongside the new Brazilian round
MotoGP is set to complete a 22-round campaign
including a return to Cezchia’s Brno in July and a new round at Hungary’s Balaton Park in August

Round four of the Brazilian Formula 4 season took place last weekend at Goiania with three races and three different winners: Alvaro Cho
Pavie secured pole position for races one and three
just 0.029 seconds faster than points leader Matheus Comparatto
the grid is formed from drivers’ second-best laptimes and the order was the same
with Pavie on pole by 0.042s over Comparatto
Hed led the first eight laps of the race before an error dropped him to last
victory instead went to TMG Racing’s Cho for the third time this season
Bassani Racing’s Comparatto finished second
Pepe Souza had reversed-grid pole for race two but lost the lead to Cavaleiro Spots driver Nobels before even reaching turn one
Nobels opened up a comfortable gap up front to win
with Cho in second and Ciro Sobral in third
The last race took place on Sunday morning
And poleman Arthur Pavie led from start to finish
despite being under a lot of pressure from team-mate Cho
He defended well to claim his maiden victory and become the seventh different winner this year
That led to the gap between the two title rivals reducing to 30 points at the season’s halfway point

The Autódromo Internacional de Goiânia Ayrton Senna could host a MotoGP round in 2026
Reports suggest that the Autódromo Internacional de Goiânia Ayrton Senna could become the latest venue to hold a Brazilian MotoGP round
GRANDE PREMIO has reported that Dorna and the government of Goiás have reached an agreement to schedule a MotoGP round in Brazil as soon as 2026
There has not been a Brazilian MotoGP round since the 2004 season when Jacarepagua hosted the Rio de Janeiro Grand Prix
the Brazilian Grand Prix dates back to the 1987 season when Goiania hosted the event from 1987 to 1989
Then Interlagos took over for the 1992 season
Jacarepagua was the last host as they ran the event from 1995 to 2004
The latest Brazilian Grand Prix proposal came after meetings between the government of Goiás and Dorna at this year’s Dutch TT at Assen
Further meetings then took place with Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta in Madrid
The deal would see the Autódromo Internacional de Goiânia Ayrton Senna host the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2026
With an option to extend the running of the Grand Prix into 2029 and 2030

one of the sites affected by the worst accident involving a radioactive source that the world has seen
Lessons drawn from the 1987 Goiânia accident in Brazil are still helping shape actions on radiation safety and security decades later
It was the worst accident involving a radioactive source that the world has seen
Cesium chloride from a dumped source that had ended up in a scrap yard spread undetected for over two weeks
Some 250 people were contaminated and four died in the first month
The event focused international attention on the issue of safety standards for radioactive sources
The IAEA introduced rigorous safety standards for radioactive sources, namely the International Basic Safety Standards No. 115, co-sponsored by several international organizations.
Brazil´s request that the IAEA draw ´lessons learned´ from Goiânia paved the way for more open, transparent reporting of radiological accidents. "With all the developments which took place since the Goiânia accident - in terms of controlling the movement of radioactive sources, preparing emergency response plans and waste management - certainly the public and the environment are better protected now than 20 years ago," Didier Louvat, Head of IAEA Waste and Environmental Safety says.
Goiânia´s legacy of a handful of cesium chloride is 3,000 cubic metres of contaminated waste. It is now buried in a near surface repository on the outskirts of the city, where it must be isolated for the next 300 years.
Despite improvements, worldwide radioactive sources are still lost and abandoned. In 2007, the IAEA knew of ten such incidents involving dangerous sources. Mr. Vilmos Friedrich, who heads an IAEA´s unit that supports countries to control radioactive sources, says these ´orphaned´ sources often enter the scrap metal exchange chain.

Fumaça das queimadas se alastrou pelo país e chegou até a capital federal - Marcelo Camargo / Agência Brasil / AFP
The wildfires that hit the state of São Paulo this weekend and spread across much of the state's territory and other parts of Brazil may have been a coordinated criminal attack
The scenario resembles what happened in the state of Pará
when agribusiness people organized forest fires via messaging apps
Known as the “Day of Fire," the series of crimes happened between August 10 and 11
Large state owners arranged to set fire in various locations
schemes were uncovered which financed the criminal action
with the fuel used in the illegal acts being apportioned
The result was devastating: the number of hotspots increased by 1,923% compared to the same period last year
1,457 fire hotspots were detected in the state
with 53 affecting Indigenous lands and 534 in Conservation Units
although the total damage has not yet been estimated
the amount of damage caused by the fires in recent days has also been high
São Paulo broke the national record last Friday (23)
The unprecedented environmental crisis caused the death of two firefighters in Urupês and led the state to declare an emergency in more than 40 cities
The consequences are also being felt elsewhere in the country
Brasília (the country’s capital)
Goiânia and Belo Horizonte were covered in smoke
In addition, flights were canceled in some cities of Minas Gerais, Goiânia (Goiás’ capital city) and in the countryside of São Paulo. Ribeirão Preto airport, one of the cities hardest hit by the smoke
The Federal Police will begin 31 investigations across the country to find the source of the fires
accused of starting the fires in the city of São José do Rio Preto and in Batatais
Environment Minister Marina Silva reinforced her suspicion that the event is related to a coordinated criminal action
“Just as we had the ‘Day of Fire’
there is a strong suspicion that it is happening again now
for there to be so many fire hotspots in several municipalities in just a few days
But investigations will tell us that,” she said
The investigations into the 2019 Day of Fire have made little progress
Both the federal inquiry and the Civil Police investigations have not found anyone directly responsible for the fires
and no one has been arrested so far.
