It’s been an eventful 24 hours in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League
Former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillén was reportedly fired as the skipper of the Tiburones de la Guaira following the team’s 12-4 loss last night. Team owner Wilmer Ruperti quickly issued a video on social media after growing discontent to reverse the decision, saying Guillén was still the team’s manager and that he hoped to see him at their Thursday game.
Before this video surfaced, Guillén apparently addressed the team and released several posts on social media to bid his farewell.

hopefully you achieve what you are trying to achieve for the happiness and well-being of the fans
With my heart in my hand my sincere thanks and no more suffering in my family from every day that this job entails
I hope one day to be a manager in the LVBP
Fast-forward a few hours and around 11:00 a.m
Ruperti posted a photo with Guillén on his Instagram where the two are seen smiling side-by-side
Ozzie shared the same image on his X account with a simple message: “See you at the Forum.”

led the franchise to its first Venezuelan Professional Baseball League championship in 38 years last season
represented the country in the 2024 Caribbean Series
The Tiburones currently sit in sixth place out of eight teams with a 24-25 record
leading to the controversial decision by general manager Alberto Diaz to fire Guillén
Díaz is now without a job while Guillén has seemingly returned for the rest of the season with his long-term future uncertain

Venezuela has announced that it will resume accepting flights of its citizens who are deported by U.S
Jorge Rodríguez, the president of Venezuela's National Assembly, said on Saturday in a post on social media that the repatriation flights would begin again as early as Sunday
said Venezuelan authorities "will not rest" until they secure the return of any citizens who require it
The White House did not immediately reply to NPR's request for comment on Sunday
In his statement, Rodríguez also alluded to the deportation of some Venezuelans to El Salvador earlier in March, when President Trump invoked the 1798 Alien Enemies Act in order to target alleged members of a violent Venezuelan prison gang
A total of 238 Venezuelans were deported in that operation, which remains under scrutiny by a federal judge who had attempted to block the deportation flights and continues to seek information from the Trump administration about why they went ahead
the Trump administration said 137 people were deported under the Alien Enemies Act and 101 were deported under regular immigration proceedings
Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro has called for the return of the Venezuelan migrants sent by the U.S. to El Salvador, where President Nayib Bukele said they were transferred to a mega-prison known as CECOT
Families of some of the Venezuelans who were deported disputed the government's claims that the men had gang connections
Maduro has said the Venezuelan migrants were kidnapped
Venezuela stopped accepting repatriation flights from the U.S. on March 8. It came after Trump announced that the U.S. would cancel the Biden-era permit that allowed California-based Chevron to extract and export oil from Venezuela
But last week Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that the Trump administration would impose "new
and escalating sanctions" on the country unless it began accepting migrants again

In a night of unrest in Venezuela following disputed election results
protesters have toppled various statues of former President Hugo Chavez
A destroyed statue of the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez lies next to its base in Valencia
the day after people protested the official election results that certified Chavez’s protege
A statue of former President Hugo Chavez is missing from its base the day after opposition protests against the reelection of Chavez’s protege
Venezuela (AP) — Anti-government activists across Venezuela are toppling giant statues of Hugo Chávez to express their anger over the alleged stealing of an election by the late president’s handpicked successor
twisted rebar and chunks of concrete lie below a pedestal where a group of protesters Monday night ripped down one likeness of Chávez that was dedicated by Maduro in 2017
A video provided to The Associated Press from one protester shows the moment when the 3.5 meter (12 feet) statue of the leader known as El Comandante was pulled down to raucous shouts of “this government is going to fall.” Once removed
the statue was dragged by motorcycles across the plaza
“This is a powerful symbol to them,” said the protester
who asked not to be identified for fear she could be arrested
“Every time we tackle one of their symbols
we’re taking away some of their strength.”
But the simultaneous nature and high number of attacks — five in the last 24 hours — underscores the depth of anger many Venezuelans feel after the National Electoral Council declared Maduro the winner in Sunday’s presidential election
more than doubled the incumbent’s vote count
A plainclothes military intelligence officer stopped journalists trying to take photos of what remains of the destroyed statue in La Guaira
said the country is “at war” and that any effort to disrespect Chávez was offensive to millions of Venezuelans who revered the former army paratrooper and anti-imperialist icon
Maduro said several people had been arrested in the attacks
which he likened to the images from revolutions pushed by the U.S
in post-Soviet states including Ukraine and Georgia
In the heart?” Maduro asked in a televised address Monday night in which he broadcast images of some of the attacks
“Just imagine if they one day gain power here

It was an evening to remember for Albert Ramirez as he won the main event at IBA Champions’ Night La Guaira
marking his homecoming to Venezuela in his first professional match on home soil at El Domo Jose Maria Vargas
Ramirez faced Germany’s Adam Deines in a 10-round contest for the WBA Light Heavyweight title
but the third round is where Ramirez came alive
struggling to keep with the pressure of his foe
the momentum looked safely with the home hero
The writing looked to be on the wall when Deines slipped in the sixth round while darting backwards across the ring to avoid an onslaught from Ramirez
The German at this stage was simply in survival mode
as a strong blow to the stomach brought Deines to a knee and he barely made it up for the count
Ramirez did not relent and had Deines down for the second time within the same round
Khuseyn Baysangurov from Russia became the new WBA International Welterweight champion after defeating Argentina’s Nicolas Jara over 10 rounds
Baysangurov was on the front foot from the early stages
picking Jara off with punches with little reply
the Argentine was noticeably laboured and was behind on points
A wake-up call came in the sixth round as he came charging out his corner and surprised the Russian with a few clear shots
but Baysangurov was back to controlling the match by the end of those three minutes
It was more of the same to the finish and the Russian was the comfortable winner
One of Venezuela’s greatest boxers in recent history
the Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist Yoel Finol
was victorious in his 54kg bout with Alexis Alvarado from Mexico
It was a scrappy start for Finol who was very active
but not very accurate in the opening rounds
Accuracy was not on the cards for Alvarado either – but mostly due to his opponent’s neat ducking and dodging
Although the early stages saw little success for either
eventually Finol’s incessant punching paid dividends
His dynamic style broke through the wall of Alvarado
taking advantage of the Venezuelan’s need to be more aggressive
It was pandemonium in the stands as Finol was named the winner
Samuel Carmona kept his cool to defeat Romania’s Cosmin-Petre Girleanu of Romania in the 54kg division
but this bout was a tale of the Romanian seeking significant offense
reflected in the judge’s verdict as he had his arm raised at the end
Compared to the high-intensity affairs in previous fights
Luis Arcon from Venezuela and Armenia’s Karen Tonakanyan were efficient and calculated in their 63.5kg bout
Tonakanyan was more of the aggressor between the pair – hitting the home favourite with more punches
albeit many not as clean as he would have liked
Arcon was seeking quality in doses and it paid off for him
He was named the victor by unanimous decision
Ecuador’s Abel Mina claimed victory in the 75kg division against Shadiri Bwogi from Uganda
A slow start between the pair turned into an exciting contest
all coming from an accidental blow below the belt from Bwogi
Mina looked stunned and seemed to lose his composure in the following round
where he left himself open to a left hook from the Ugandan and took a stumble backwards
The Ecuadoran received a count of eight but continued
Mina was looking better in the final rounds and pursued the Ugandan
winning by unanimous decision – a verdict Bwogi disagreed with as he shook his head
believing he had done enough to score the win
Keiber Gonzalez put in one of the best performances of the night in the 75kg division against Elias Espadas of Mexico
Gonzalez towered over Espadas in the contest
relying on his reach while the Mexican’s power was his advantage
Despite being more susceptible to checks to the chin due to his height
it was Gonzalez who excelled with the uppercut
The second round was the beginning of the offensive campaign – as he slowly softened up Espadas
Gonzalez was leaving his corner and laying in blow after blow
with Espadas having little power to do anything but soak up the pain
but the winner was clear – Gonzalez had his arm raised
Gonzalez’s compatriot Ender Luces defeated Tigran Uzlian from Russia in the 63.5kg weight category
Uzlian picked up the aggression in the second round
where he brought Uzlian to the same ropes he was pressed again a couple of rounds before
He looked energetic into the last round as Uzlian’s energy look spent
He confidently floated around the ring in the final moments celebrating his impending unanimous decision victory

the largest waterfalls in the world by water volume
the 18 falls that formed them doubled the volume of the Niagara Falls and surpassed in 12 times that of the Victoria Falls
along the border between Brazil and Paraguay
hence their name in Portuguese (Salto das Sete Quedas)
and the noise they produced could be heard at a distance of 20 kilometers
An agreement between the two countries in 1973 to build a joint hydroelectric dam condemned the falls to disappear under the artificial lake formed by it
curious and neighbors of the nearby localities approached to contemplate for the last time the Guairá Falls
By January 1982 the collapse of visitors was such that the 90-meter long Roosevelt suspension bridge
On the 17th the steel cables broke right in the middle of the bridge
and 32 people perished when they fell into the river
the closing of the floodgates began to bury one of the greatest shows on the planet
In 14 days the Guairá Falls had disappeared forever
Listed as one of the 7 wonders of the modern world by the American Society of Civil Engineers magazine
it is the largest energy producer on the planet
surpassing in 2015 and 2016 the Chinese Three Gorges Dam (more than 103 million megawatts per hour in 2016)
It produces so much energy that it exceeds the needs of Paraguay
which is not satisfied with its share of the production
The energy produced by the dam in 2016 would be enough to supply Paraguay for 12 years
Its 20 turbines have a combined capacity of 14,000 megawatts
Ten of them produce on the Paraguayan frequency of 50 Hertz
while the other ten produce on the Brazilian frequency of 60 Hertz

and in its construction both steel and iron were used as to build 300 Eiffel towers

Cristobal Brewer joined his good friend Roman Garcia for a day aboard the infamous 36-foot Bertram Someday Lady
Brewer didn’t spend much time on the water because his boat
Because he was in dire need for a day on the water
he called Garcia and convinced him to take Somebody Lady out to test the stabilizer pump and other recent repairs made on the boat
so they could confidently fish the first of three legs of the Venezuela Top Fish Tournament
Brewer and Garcia arrived at Venezuela’s Playa Grande Yacht Club early
the two fishermen were on board and prepping their tackle as they made their way out to El Placer Bank with Captain Carlos Caballo Gonzalez and mate
Conditions were ideal — 2- to 4-foot seas and light winds
The water was green all the way out to the bank
so the crew pushed further north in an attempt to find blue water before putting out their spread
Because Garcia and the rest of the crew were practicing for the 30-pound Top Fish Tournament
the first marlin of the day came into the spread
just seeing the fish raised the hopes of the crew
another fish appeared and showed moderate interest in a ballyhoo
when a massive blue came into the spread and struck the short portside bait
with the crew spotting a marlin every 30 minutes on average
all of which showed interest but didn’t bite
find a willing sailfish that Garcia fought and quickly released
Brewer jumped on the rod and skillfully worked the fish to the boat
The release of Brewer’s white marlin locked up a grand slam for the day
the anglers fishing aboard Someday Lady had raised 13 marlin and a sailfish
They even managed to catch a nice dolphin and hook a wahoo that came unglued mid fight
This outstanding day of fishing goes to show that even though Venezuelan authorities have a lot of work to do on controlling informal commercial longliners
La Guaira still provides anglers with epic fishing opportunities
It’s a special place worth protecting and is one of the few places on the planet where fishermen have a realistic chance of catching a grand slam year-round
Despite the hard political times and the gossip of how difficult it is to bring your boat to Venezuela
with a little bit of planning and help from the locals
bringing your boat to this billfish mecca is possible
Top-notch captains and crews are available for charter as well

(ANS - La Guaira) - The crisis in Venezuela continues
further worsened when Nicolás Maduro prevented the entry of humanitarian aid for the Venezuelan people
the political crisis worsened the social crisis and in attempts to seek food and receive aid
hundreds were wounded and hundreds more were imprisoned
wrote a letter demanding an end to the violence
What happened at the border is a crime that screams to Heaven
The attack and killing of unarmed civilians by armed gangs and the destruction of medicines and food implies a serious responsibility under international law
But we deplore the few who have become accomplices of these crimes and who have allowed armed groups to attack the population
We reiterate what the presidency of the Episcopal Conference stated in its recent message of 21 February:
The regime has the obligation to meet the needs of the population
and therefore facilitate the entry and distribution of the same
To ask for and receive aid is not a betrayal of our country; on the contrary
it is a moral duty that belongs to all of us
faced with the dramatic shortcomings and urgencies of the Venezuelan people." (No
And further on: "We are against all types of violence
We call on the National Armed Forces to stand on the side of the people to whom they belong
The oath to enforce the Constitution (...) has as its main recipient the Venezuelan people: it is the commitment to defend the people
to protect their inalienable rights and to make their human dignity shine
In conscience they do not have to execute orders that threaten the life and safety of the population
In such circumstances they must allow the entry and distribution of international aid." (No
Let us pray to the Lord for Venezuela in these difficult times
so that the violence and bloodshed may cease and peace be re-established
so that our country may walk along paths of progress and freedom
