He is rapidly expanding his family's label by tapping the growing affordable segment of the Brazilian market
RetailersThe son of one of the founders of the Guararapes Group, Flavio Rocha is the chief executive officer of Riachuelo, a rapidly expanding retailer in Brazil tapping the growing affordable segment of the market. Rocha was also the CEO of the Guararapes Group for 10 years, which manages the Riachuelo Stores Network, Guararapes Confections, Midway Financial, Carrier Casa Verde and Shopping Midway Mall.
As part of the Guararapes Group, the largest fashion group in Brazil, Riachuelo has more than 250 stores across the country, which is populated with local low-cost apparel giants like Lojas Renner and Lojas Marisa. “Last year, we opened 43 new stores, a record for us and we will double our number of stores in four years,” Rocha told BoF in 2014.
In 2014, Riachuelo made a splash with the launch of its first flagship store on Rua Oscar Freire, a tree-lined street in the Jardins district of São Paulo that used to house luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Cartier and Dior, before they moved their operations into the city’s popular malls. "This store, at first, was meant to be mostly a marketing effort, but it has become a strong commercial success, being the highest selling spot of all the chain in December 2013," said Rocha.
Riachuelo produces most of its collections in Brazil and is involved in every step of the supply chain, from design to logistics, production and distribution. It has gained international attention in recent years since tapping guest designers to collaborate with, which have included Karl Lagerfeld and Donatella Versace .
Rocha dropped out of college to start working at the Guararapes Group. He has also founded and chaired the Retail Development Institute, for which he is currently a director. He has been elected Best Retail CEO by Forbes Brasil, Entrepreneur of the Year by Dinheiro magazine and one of the 100 Most Influential in the Country by both Forbes and Época. In 2018, Rocha was also voted best CEO of the year award by Consumidor Moderno magazine.
The businessman has also had a high-profile political career in Brazil. He is married with four children.

Guararapes International Airport is the airport serving the port city of Recife in Brazil
It was built in 2004 and is currently operated by Infraero
It is the largest airport in north-east Brazil
The airport is located at a distance of 14km from the city centre of Recife
Recife is one of the largest metropolitan areas in Brazil
Bordering the Atlantic Ocean with a large port
it is one of the important industrial cities of the South American country
It is also one of the busiest airports in Brazil and is ranked seventh in the country in terms of its cargo handling capacity
The airport handled 6.36 million passengers and recorded 83,638 aircraft movements in 2011
It handled 47,704t of cargo during the same year
The airport was ranked fifth in the SKYTRAX awards in the ‘Most Improved Airport’ category
unveiled plans to invest $4.6m for upgrading and renovating the airport in preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup
The airport will have a Bus Rapid Transit line that will connect the downtown of the metropolitan area to the airport and the stadium
This line will also be integrated with the Recife Metro network
The airport was originally called the Ibura Airport and was renamed as Guararapes Airport in 1948
It was built during World War II as a replacement for an air field called Parque do Encanta Moca
After the end of the war the airport was used as maintenance and refuelling stop for aircraft travelling between South America and Europe
A passenger terminal was built at the airport in January 1958
The runways 14/32 and 18/36 were extended to 2,010m and 2,400m respectively
The authority for operating the airport was handed over to Infraero in 1979
keeping in view the future development plans for the airport
A major overhaul of the passenger terminal took place in 1982 and another expansion was carried out in 1990
The airport underwent a massive renovation after 2000
which included addition of a new passenger terminal
The master plan for the airport was designed by Moretti Arquitetura
The design mainly focused on an air-mall concept with around 130 retail stalls planned inside the terminal
which has a capacity to handle 7.2 million passengers per annum
became operational in September 2005 but was officially inaugurated in 2006
A new parking garage with an area of 72,000 square metres to park 2,020 vehicles was also constructed at the airport
Connector works from the terminal with the apron were completed in July 2011
The new terminal building with an area of 54,000 square metres has four levels
11 passenger boarding bridges and 64 check-in counters
The large arched roof structure is the main attraction of the building
Brasília International Airport (also called Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport) is located in the federal capital city of Brazil
The elliptical dome placed at the centre of the roof ceiling covers the main concourse completely
Separate bi-level connecting areas are laid for passengers arriving and departing from the airport
These areas are specially designed as large glassed tunnels to help passengers go in the right direction
These tunnels connect passengers with the 11 departure gates
The corridor which leads the passengers to the boarding bridges prevents mixing of arrivals and departures
The aircraft parking apron has a capacity to accommodate 26 planes at a time
An aircraft refuelling facility named Keroduct is installed from underneath the apron’s concrete pavement slab using an arrangement of pipelines
This reduces the risks caused by fuelling trucks entering the apron parking
A vacuum sewer system is also installed in a similar fashion
making it easier to unload lavatory waste from the toilets of aircraft
The baggage claim areas were built using pre-stressed reinforced concrete beams to make them flexible for future expansions
A building automation system installed inside the terminal prevents the wastage of energy using sensors which detect areas that are not being used
Thermal Sensitive Glasses with an area of 23,000 square metres allow natural day light inside
giving clear visibility and preventing temperatures rising inside the terminal
The new terminal was built with an investment of $155m
the Pernambuco state government and Embraer
Proposal for the construction of a new control tower with an investment of $38.29m is being considered
is expected to start in 2012 and complete by the end of 2013

(ANS – Recife) – The Salesian Province of Recife Brazil (BRE) welcomed Fr Rafael Bejarano from the Youth Ministry Sector at Salesian Headquarters in Rome, Reference person for Social Works in America, on a visit to learn about Social Works in person from the Metropolitan Region of Recife.
The objectives of the visit, which took place from 24 to 28 February, were to learn about Social Works, share the importance of networking and strengthen the Salesian identity in social services, encouraging them to seek greater effectiveness in different projects.
On the first day, Fr Bejarano participated in the Provincial Youth Ministry Meeting, held at the Salesian Colony of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, which was attended by about 40 people including Salesian local pastoral coordinators and members of the teams.
Particularly intense was 26 February, during which Fr Bejarano offered the "Good morning" to employees at the Province Centre and later met the sectors related to Social Works. In his address, Fr Bejarano shared the importance of networking for justice and peace in society and urged those present to strengthen their Salesian identity in the field of social services.
On the same day, Fr Bejarano visited the Don Bosco school in Recife, the Salesian Rest Home, the Salesian school and the Don Bosco Educational Centre in Jaboatão dos Guararapes.
His presence at the Don Bosco school in Recife offered moments of reflection and inspiration to all those present, strengthening the bonds of the educative and pastoral community and reaffirming the institution's commitment to the well-being and integral development of its young people. The Don Bosco School, located in the Bongi district of Recife-PE, takes in around 1,700 young people free of charge, involving them in apprenticeship projects and graphic design courses.
In Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Fr Bejarano got to know the Salesian school which plays a crucial role in the philanthropic education of over 600 primary school students and stands out as a true point of reference in the Region.
The visit, as mentioned, continued at the Don Bosco Educational Centre, located in the heart of Jaboatão dos Guararapes. It plays a fundamental role in the professional qualification of adolescents and young adults and their families in situations of poverty and social risk.
Fr Bejarano then visited the Don Bosco Curado Oratory in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, which welcomes about 45 children and also functions as an after-school opportunity for vulnerable families. Here he had the opportunity to meet some of the dozens of children assisted, sensing the receptivity and joy of those who attend him.
Finally, on the same day, the Salesian took part in the meeting to present the other Salesian works of the Northeast of the country. The Province demonstrated the breadth and impact of its social projects: with more than 80 ongoing initiatives, Social Works have reached about 8,000 children, adolescents and young adults on various fronts, as shown by the results of the Social Report 2023.
The Don Bosco Educational Centre in Gramoré, the Matriz de Camaragibe Youth Centre, the Don Bosco Educational Centre in João Pessoa and the Don Bosco Social Work in Areia Branca are just some of the institutions that play a crucial role in the mission of promoting integral human development.
died after a shark attack on July 10 on Piedade beach
Brunno Braga•Jul 20
It was supposed to be a typical sunny day at the beach with friends, chatting, eating seafood and drinking beer and caipirinhas. However, it turned out to be a nightmare, caused by the most gruesome shark attack in Brazil over the past few years
died after being attacked by a shark on July 10 on Piedade beach
This beach is located in the city of Recife
known as the capital of shark attacks in Brazil
According to the eye-witness Endriano Gomes
He decided to go into the water to urinate around 2 pm
“Since the beach doesn’t have a bathroom
Ademir also reports that he was in despair at the time
Rocha Santos was dragged out of the water and onto the sand by friends
but “he had already fallen unconscious.” The man was taken to the Hospital da Restauração (HR)
Lifeguard colonel Leodilson Bastos said that the place where the attack took place is high risk for a shark attack because there is no reef protection

the chance of an incident is very high,” he declared
Known for its beautiful beaches and one of the main tourist destinations in Brazil
the state of Pernambuco is also known as the shark attack capital in the country
According to the Pernambuco State Monitoring Committee (Cemit)
the coast of Pernambuco has reported 65 shark attacks since 1992
Bastos also says that the attack took place at a different time than most incidents
the majority of cases are reported in the late afternoon
A study carried out by Pernambuco Federal University concluded that environmental changes caused by the disorderly growth of cities
such as the suppression of mangroves and pollution
are the main cause for the shark attacks in the state
such as the construction of the Port of Suape
the structuring of dikes and stretches of rivers and mangroves in the name of modernization destroyed the environment where sharks used to live
less than 2.4% of the urban center’s surface is mangrove
More than 90% of all organisms that inhabit the marine region use the mangrove at least once in their lifetime to reproduce or feed
