This controversial 10-foot-high abstract concrete sculpture
which creator Eduardo Chillida described as “the homeland of every man.” The concrete arms symbolize reaching out and hugging where sea meets sky
and considered many locations in Spain and France until Gijón offered him a cliffside spot at Cerro de Santa Catalina
The park here was previously a military fortification
Construction involved first creating an expanded polystyrene model offsite
This was used as the model for the sculpture's pine wooden molds
which was then transported over 300 kilometers and assembled in Gijón
Concrete was poured inside the wooden molds
and that in turn is supported by a metal framework inside
The total price tag came out to 1.2 billion pesetas
many citizens criticized the sculpture's high cost after it was inaugurated in 1990
Elogio del Horizonte was also ridiculed for its appearance considered ugly
and it earned the nickname "King Kong's toilet."
the sculpture has been viewed more fondly as a defining symbol of Gijón
Its 30th anniversary was celebrated with an exhibition at the park
it is a popular site to view the ocean and coastline
and has become noted for how the sounds of the sea are amplified from its inside
the noise is projected from the incomplete ring at the top of the sculpture
This 42-foot tribute to the workforce still reminds us to pause and recharge
A whimsical display of massive metal sculptures made from recycled materials
made from recycled wood and materials found in nature
Papier-mâché folk art recognizing horrors of slave trade
Rusted humanoid clutching a laptop and trailing cables
A family of distorted sculptures stands outside Seoul's former imperial palace
An abstract sculpture that will be a work in progress for the next 1,000 years
this one-legged bronze soldier poignantly showcases the human cost of war

The pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has not only affected humans but also raised concerns about its transmission to wild animals
Understanding these dynamics is critical for preventing future pandemics and developing control strategies
This study aims to investigate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wild mammals at the Belo Horizonte Zoo in Brazil
analyzing the virus's evolution and zoonotic potential
The study was conducted at the Belo Horizonte Zoo
and nasal swabs were collected from 47 captive animals between November 2021 and March 2023
SARS-CoV-2 presence was determined using RT-PCR
and positive samples were sequenced for phylogenetic analysis
Consensus genomes were classified using Pangolin and NextClade tools
and a maximum likelihood phylogeny was inferred using IQ-Tree
with the highest positivity in rectal samples
revealing two variants: VOC Alpha in a maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) and a fallow deer (Dama dama)
and VOC Omicron in a western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla)
Phylogenetic analysis indicated potential human-to-animal transmission
with animal genomes clustering close to human samples from the same region
This study highlights the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in various wild mammal species at the Belo Horizonte Zoo
emphasizing the virus's zoonotic potential and the complexity of interspecies transmission
The detection of different variants suggests ongoing viral evolution and adaptation in new hosts
Continuous monitoring and genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in wildlife are essential for understanding its transmission dynamics and preventing future zoonotic outbreaks
These findings underscore the need for integrated public health strategies that include wildlife monitoring to mitigate the risks posed by emerging infectious diseases
studying SARS-CoV-2 infection in wild animals at the Belo Horizonte Zoo is highly relevant to public health and biodiversity conservation
as well as contributing to the advancement of knowledge about the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 and wild animals
and the formulation of public policies and management strategies for pandemic prevention and control
The samples used in this study were collected as part of the service provided by the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) to the Municipal Park and Zoobotanical Foundation of Belo Horizonte (FPMZB)
were conducted by veterinarians from the FPMZB staff
ensuring adherence to the protocols established for extension activities by UFMG
Given the global concern about interspecies transmission of the virus between humans and animals
the study investigated the role of these species in the transmission chain and sought a better understanding of the pandemic's dynamics to develop effective prevention strategies
FPMZB is the second-largest public green area in Belo Horizonte and receives over one million visitors annually
and nasal swabs were collected from 47 captive animals of the class Mammalia between November 2021 to March 2023
with the aim of investigating SARS-CoV-2 infection in captive animals with no prior knowledge of virus exposure
Capture and containment of the animals were carried out by the veterinary team at the FPMZB Zoo
who possess the necessary experience and knowledge to ensure the well-being and safety of the animals during the collection process
which was done after the physical and/or chemical restraint of the animals
This was done in accordance with the zoo's management schedule
and whenever containment was necessary for obtaining biological samples
Laboratories responsible for the analysis in this study provided 1.5 ml Eppendorf tubes containing DNA/RNA Shield™ (2X Concentrate) 125 ml (ZymoResearch) for the collection of animal samples
Each collected sample was properly identified with the animal's microchip number
the samples were stored in transport containers and subsequently in -80 °C freezers at the Laboratory of Integrative Biology (ICB/UFMG) to maintain their integrity and viability
Viral RNA was extracted from swab samples (rectal
and nasal) using the PureLink™ RNA Mini Kit (Invitrogen™
These tests were performed using the iTaq™ Universal Probes One-Step (Bio-RAD™
The diagnosis was carried out by RT-PCR following the CDC 2019-Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Real-Time RT-PCR Diagnostic Panel protocol
The samples underwent a concentration and purification process using the RNA Clean & Concentrator™-5 kit (Zymo Research™
USA) to concentrate the amount of viral RNA and eliminate potential contaminants
The cDNA was synthesized using the SuperScript™ IV First-Strand Synthesis System (Thermo Fisher Scientific™
Sequencing libraries were prepared using the xGen™ SARSCoV-2 Amplicon Panel xGen SARS-CoV-2 S Gene Amplicon Panel (Integrated DNA Technologies™
USA) following the manufacturer's instructions
Multiplex PCR was used to enrich the target sequences
Sequences that had the expected sequencing quality parameters (coverage greater than or equal to 60% of the genome) were used in our study
Shimodaira-Hasegawa-like approximate likelihood ratio test (SH-aLRT) was used to calculate the branch uncertainty in the phylogeny
Black dots denote the locations of the cages
each identified with the lowest taxonomic classification among the individuals housed within
Red circles mark cages where animals tested positive for RT-PCR
while blue points indicate successfully sequenced animals
Timeline of samples collected at the Belo Horizonte Zoo from November 2021 to March 2023
Blue dots represent the number and moment of sample collection from November 2021 to January 2022 when the zoo reduced visitor entry
Black dots represent the number and moment of sample collection from February 2022 to March 2023 when the zoo was open for visitors
Black bars represent the positive samples found in each collection
Phylogenetic analysis inferred by maximum likelihood method
The tree presents three new SARS-CoV-2 animal genomes
220 SARS-CoV-2 animal genomes and 530 SARS-CoV-2 human genomes public available on GISAID EpiCoV database
Each branch is filled according to the host from which it was isolated
Purple circles represent the genomes generated in our study
Bootstrap values for the most important branches are exhibited with the lineage classification
the limitations of our study prevent us from definitively identifying the route of infection
and further research is necessary to confirm these observations
the specific dates and conditions of our study may have influenced the outcomes
This discrepancy underscores the need for more comprehensive and long-term studies to gain a better understanding of SARS-CoV-2 transmission between humans and animals
the monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 infection in wild and domestic animals is important for tracking the appearance of new mutations
possible adaptation of the virus to new hosts and emergence of new lineages in circulation in that area
The findings of this study underscore the significant risk posed by interspecies transmission of SARS-CoV-2
particularly in environments where humans and a diverse range of animal species are in close proximity
The detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in 19.1% of the tested mammals at the Belo Horizonte Zoo and the successful sequencing of three animal samples highlight the virus's ability to infect multiple species
potentially creating new reservoirs and facilitating viral evolution
This research provides critical insights into the dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 transmission between humans and animals
suggesting that close contact between zoo animals and their caretakers is a likely route of infection
The identification of different viral lineages
in the zoo animals further emphasizes the importance of ongoing surveillance to understand the virus's adaptation and evolution in new hosts
Given the zoonotic nature of many emerging infectious diseases
these findings are crucial for public health
and the development of effective disease control strategies
Continuous monitoring and genomic analysis of SARS-CoV-2 in both wild and domestic animals are essential to track new mutations
and prevent the emergence of new variants that could pose additional risks to human health
this study provides valuable data for the global understanding of SARS-CoV-2 and reinforces the need for comprehensive surveillance systems to mitigate the impact of future pandemics and safeguard both human and animal health

“A film that is perhaps best described as a visual poem
a tribute to the past and the people who resided within it.”
The past is a place that we all frequently visit – but depending on which memories we evoke these voyages into our personal histories can either bring joy or discomfort
César Augusto Acevedo uses this ambiguity as the foundation for Horizonte
his extraordinary sophomore film in which he tells the story of the ghosts of a mother and son revisiting places from their past
including their ancestral home and the villages where they grew up
A hauntingly beautiful and sometimes disturbing film that blends psychological drama with magical realism
this story cuts to the core of what it means to be human in a manner that is poignant
which are all reactions that don’t necessarily seem compatible in theory
but which the director effectively conveys in a more complex and engaging way than we may have anticipated based on the premise
Horizonte is a simple and evocative film focused on plumbing the emotional depths as the two main characters traverse the past
coming to terms with uncomfortable truths and seeking some way to atone for their philosophical misdemeanors that occurred during their lifetimes
the consequences of which they have to face as they remain suspended in this state of existential limbo
but deeply moving in a way that feels earnest and like it is crafted from layers of thoughtful philosophical analysis
It feels like a major step forward for Acevedo as an essential voice in contemporary global cinema
which is only growing stronger as a result of such visionary young directors taking bold risks and creating work that reflects not only their own personal quandaries
something that has only grown stronger as a result of more diverse voices being given such a platform
The message at the heart of Horizonte is made clear in its opening moments
since it is obvious that Acevedo sees very little use in crafting a film built on ambiguity to the extent that it becomes difficult for the viewer to understand the direction it is moving at any given point
This film is simply about the experience of being haunted by ghosts of the past
with the only difference here being that this story is told from the perspective of the deceased themselves
We follow along as they navigate various existential crises related to their reflections on the lives they have recently lost
watching them as they make their way through this indeterminate time and place in which they have been spiritually resurrected
it sounds somewhat absurd and perhaps like a botched attempt at profundity
intricate direction it becomes absolutely extraordinary
This is a Beckett-like story of meandering souls seeking meaning in a world that has grown increasingly bleak
and who seem to be doomed to an eternity of sauntering aimlessly through an environment that they only vaguely recognize
attempting to interact with people who are unaware that they are constantly being observed
Horizonte offers an unconventional glimpse into the past
following these individuals as they drift through what we can assume is some kind of purgatory (although such a word is intentionally never used
along with many other terms that relate to the afterlife)
showing their gradual realization that the past
present and future are all combined in a bundle of existential despair
Acevedo challenges religious and social conventions
looking at the destructive nature of humanity
particularly in our incessant need to default to some form of colonialism
In order to bring this film to life the director employs a unique style that is perfectly aligned with his vision and the intentions he has for the narrative
we find that Horizonte is a film that evokes a very eerie
with Acevedo establishing a specific mood that guides the story
pushing us through this sometimes unsettling depiction of reality and giving us invaluable insights into the existential strife experienced by the characters
Both tonally and visually the film is an absolute marvel
and we find that the two elements work in communion with one another – the distinctive atmosphere is buttressed by the visual elements
with the compositions by cinematographer Mateo Guzmán standing out as some of the most gorgeous of the year
as well as the use of colors and the fact that the film oscillates between showing these characters from afar at one moment
and in extreme close-up in another (as well as a few in which we literally see the surrounding terrain from their point of view) creates an intentionally disorienting experience
implying that we have access to some parts of their psychological state
It ultimately becomes a voyeuristic view of a war-torn country
focusing specifically on the hollow shell of society left behind in the aftermath
and to fully understand the film and what it represents it helps to simply surrender to the madness that surrounds the film and allow ourselves to follow the hypnotic paths down which we are gradually led
It’s deeply unconventional and slightly unsettling in a way that can be difficult to comprehend at times
but it is clear that understanding the nuances of this film is not entirely necessary; instead it becomes a sensory experience
which is conveyed brilliantly throughout the film
carefully curated by a director wholeheartedly dedicated to quite an unconventional but nonetheless daring premise
This is a film that is perhaps best described as a visual poem
a tribute to the past and the people who resided within it
and therefore the filmmaking is as important as the performances delivered by the actors cast in these challenging roles
The two protagonists are portrayed by Claudio Cataño
as the young man who is filled with remorse and apoplectic rage after his premature death
and whose arrival back in the world he had left only moments before further adds to his confusion; and by the legendary Paulina García
a woman who struggled to provide for her family and ultimately died at the hands of the same child she is now accompanying through the afterlife
The two leads are perfectly aligned with Acevedo and his vision
tempering their performances to match his style and the overall intentions of the material
Neither of them goes too broad and they constantly resist the temptation to play to the rafters
The entire reason Horizonte succeeds is because everyone on both sides of the camera is in sync with one another
existing on the same wavelength of philosophical ambiguity
where even one instance of doing too much or too little could alter the entire trajectory of the film – a film that is far more effective as a piece of narrative storytelling when it maintains a consistent tone
The element of surprise is also very important
and it falls to Cataño and García to facilitate these moments where the audience is caught off-guard
since these essentially pad the film and make it a far more complex
earnest sense of wanting to explore the past
The supporting cast is populated by strong performances
and while most of them appear only for one or two scenes and usually exist only to advance the plot involving the two leads
and Acevedo shows himself to be as able a writer for actors as he is a storyteller and visual stylist
Horizonte is a film that questions human nature and takes us on an existential odyssey
in which it addresses some of life’s most challenging questions while evoking the past and looking at the direction in which the present world is moving
Here this takes the form of an uncomfortable
rapidly declining empire built on imperialism and despair
Making sense of the film is both difficult and redundant – this is not a work that demands
so attempting to do so will not only frustrate viewers seeking a more directly didactic account of these themes but also remove the mystical luster that lingers over every frame
The film is composed of an endless stream of nightmarish images
which can be disturbing or beautiful depending on our perspective
It takes us on a metaphysical journey as we follow these characters seeking answers to questions that are quite simply impossible to resolve
and the conclusion is that we are constantly trapped in a cycle of repetition; one that cannot ever be changed
in which we are constantly atoning for the sins of the past
whether committed by ourselves or the ancestors that came before us
This leads to the film becoming quite a daring piece of postcolonial literature
but it is also truthful and offers a bleak but important glimpse into the subject matter
Functioning as both a stunning visual achievement and a bittersweet elegy to the past and the people who populated it
Horizonte is one of the year’s most fascinating
It is a great introduction to Acevedo as a talented new voice in global cinema
and a brilliant piece of storytelling that doesn’t give us the answers we want
but rather insights into the human condition
the likes of which are genuinely challenging and revolutionary

The construction of the Horizonte wind power project commenced in 2021
Antofagasta region
The Horizonte wind farm located in Chile’s Antofagasta region
It is on the track to become the largest wind farm in Chile and the second largest in Central America
The project involves an estimated investment of approximately $900m
The project achieved a significant construction milestone in June 2024
with the completion and installation of 81 out of the planned 140 wind turbines
The commissioning plan for the wind farm includes an initial stage of energisation of 70 wind turbines in the northern area of the project
The energisation of the park’s southern area
alongside the commissioning of a high-voltage line and substation
The Horizonte wind power project lies 130km north-east of Taltal and 80km east of Paposo town in the Antofagasta region of Chile
The first phase of the Horizonte wind farm incorporates 140 units of E-160 EP5 wind turbines
The EP5 turbines feature a low-maintenance ENERCON direct E-160 drive
bolstered by powerful inverter and permanent magnet generator technology
the turbines are designed to withstand extreme temperatures and operate at wind speeds of up to 28 metres per second
The turbines feature an efficient E-nacelle design
which amalgamates complex requirements from production
and installation into a single-levelised cost of energy optimised design
The wind farm is projected to reduce up to 1.2 million tonnes (t) of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions annually
significantly contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and enhancing the country’s energy sustainability
The first wind turbines were energised through the Parinas substation in May 2024
which enabled electricity to be fed into the National Electric System
Colbun submitted an environmental impact assessment to extend the wind farm’s capacity from 816MW to 996MW in March 2024
The expansion includes the installation of up to 24 new wind turbines
each with a maximum nominal power of 7.5MW
It will generate enough electricity to meet the needs of 130,000 homes
The construction of the expansion project is anticipated to begin in the second half (H2) of 2025 with an estimated investment of approximately $200m
The expansion will utilise the temporary infrastructure from the original wind farm
The expansion is expected to create up to 400 jobs
with construction work expected to last approximately 18 months
The new facilities will further contribute to offsetting up to 99,220t of CO₂ emissions a year
Madeco, the cable wire manufacturing wing of Nexans, supplied 840km length of electrical conductors, primarily aluminium medium voltage cables
Sigdo Koppers was awarded the engineering procurement and construction and balance of plant contract for the project
The scope of work involves the engineering development
It also involves expanding an existing substation
2×220kV transmission line and the supply and assembly of the medium voltage network
was subcontracted by SKIC to connect the wind farm to the grid
a wind turbine manufacturer based in Germany
was selected to supply its advanced E-160 EP5 platform wind turbines for the project
was appointed as the installation partner for the Horizonte wind power project in December 2022
The Horizonte wind farm marks a significant step forward for Chile in reaching its goal of sourcing 70% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030
The project is poised to enhance regional wind power generation capacity by 70%
The project is estimated to generate around 2,400GWh of energy annually
equivalent to the consumption of more than 700,000 homes

tread the path of redemption after a civil war marked by crimes and wrongful deaths in César Augusto Acevedo's sophomore feature
including the Caméra d’Or at its premiere at Cannes – it seems destined for further festival exposure and maybe even a niche distribution in arthouse theatres
and the road leads them across the realm to his memories where he faces his victims
which is how memories and reflection actually work
Its dark dream logic and magical realism are complemented with equally sinister and minimal production design (courtesy of Marcela Gómez Montoya)
There is a note of elegance in Mateo Guzmán Sánchez’ cinematography that is often drenched in fog
which is an apt metaphor for both the war and the memories of it
especially when it comes to rotating movements in long takes
while the fading out of the characters from scenes is also a nice touch by editors Soledad Salfate and Camila Beltrán
This gritty but tense visual style is accompanied by an equally impressive soundscape
thanks mainly to the original score by Harry Allouche
The biggest challenge is laid upon the leading duo of actors
given that Acevedo’s script often presents them with long monologues
slow and painful experience but for all the right reasons
since the road to redemption is never an easy one to take
especially after a lifetime of inhuman acts
it is a masterfully made film that leaves the viewer with a lasting impression and serves as a second step in César Augusto Acevedo’s filmmaking career that we've been waiting and hoping for for a long time
