Follows reports of new data center in neighboring Sumaré
Microsoft is planning another new data center in the Campinas area of São Paulo state
BNAmericas reports that Microsoft is developing a new data center in Hortolândia
likely to expand its existing São Paulo Azure cloud region
BNAmericas said it obtained information about the plans from a recent request sent to São Paulo’s state environmental agency
the request mentions the installation of a data center on reportedly greenfield land with 39 power generators
Microsoft launched a São Paulo Azure cloud region – known as Brazil South – in Campinas in 2014. It was expanded to three availability zones in 2021
The company announced plans for a second Brazilian region – Brazil Southeast – in Rio de Janeiro in 2020
The location is no longer listed on the company’s site and has been re-classified as a ‘reserved access region.’
Microsoft has previously said such secondary locations are “optimized for disaster recovery that can support scenarios such as helping meet data residency requirements or specific risk & regulatory compliance needs for geographic isolation.”
Earlier this month it was revealed Microsoft is developing a new data center in nearby Sumaré
another municipality in São Paulo state outside Campinas
Ascenty – controlled by Digital Realty and Brookfield Infrastructure Partners – operates a large campus in Hortolândia

The 2020 winner of the Brazilian national lottery died on September 14 after being kidnapped for his prize money
won 47 million reais ($9 million) in the “Mega-Sena,” the largest lottery in Brazil
at least four winners of the Mega-Sena prize have been murdered
Alves Dias was found seriously injured on a highway in Hortolândia, a city of 236,000 inhabitants in the state of São Paulo
The 55-year-old left his home to go for a walk and never returned
Police said kidnappers held him for 20 hours before he was found on the highway
his kidnappers asked him to pay 3 million reais (around $600,000)
In audios obtained by the Globo television program Fantastic
Alves Dias was heard asking his bank manager by phone to approve the transfer
A police station explained that the suspicious request was rejected because it was an “unreal” amount of money
The Secretary of Public Security of São Paulo (SSP) reported that the criminals withdrew the equivalent of $4,000 in reais from the victim’s account. Authorities, who said that the attack was motivated by Alves Dias’ lottery win, have opened an investigation into extortion and homicide.
Police arrested two of the four suspects in the murder on Monday
The arrest was confirmed by the governor of the State of São Paulo
who was identified as the owner of the bank account that received the money from Alves Dias during the kidnapping
Informo aqui em primeira mão: a @Policia_Civil esclareceu o crime do assassinato do ganhador da mega sena
Um dos criminosos já está atrás das grades
Although Alves Dias became a millionaire thanks to the lottery win
He continued to live with his family in the same house in Hortolândia; he did not increase security at his home and he continued to go to the same places
His neighbors told the Brazilian press that everyone in the area knew of his fortune
The easy-going lottery winner allowed himself just a few luxuries
bought a farm in a nearby town and gave a childhood friend a truck
He also covered the medical expenses of another childhood friend
defined him as a man with a simple life and a good heart

a federal government initiative promoting digital inclusion across Brazil with high-speed broadband over satellite
5 November 2024 – Telebras has selected SES
to support the implementation of Brazil’s Electronic Government Program — Citizen Assistance Service (GESAC)
The partnership between the companies enabled the implementation of the Managed Enterprise solution across more than 1,500 sites in public institutions
indigenous villages and rural settlements across the country’s Northern Region
As part of SES’s Managed Enterprise solution delivered over its high-throughput SES-17 Ka-band satellite
SES will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the network
The sites have been connected since April 2024 and are supported by SES’s new gateway in Hortolandia
SES-17 is a geostationary satellite that offers an optimised solution for accelerating digital inclusion programs across the region
which offers full coverage over Brazil and the rest of Latin America
The GESAC Program is primarily aimed at communities in a state of social vulnerability located in rural and remote areas throughout Brazil
and encourages e-government initiatives by government agencies
The program is coordinated by the Ministry of Communications (MCom) and has over 15,000 free Internet points in operation since its creation in 2002
“Telebras has extensive experience in digital inclusion
and we have long been an ally of remote and underserved communities by bringing information and communication technologies that promote digital access and progress
we will do much more because digital inclusion enhances access to citizenship,” said Frederico Siqueira
“SES is a great partner that shares our commitment to bridging the digital divide across Brazil
and with its Managed Enterprise solution via SES-17 satellite and the ability to reach remote areas across the entire country
we will continue to provide life-changing internet access to many.”
“Brazil has made significant progress in recent years in improving the population’s access to the Internet
but there still room for improvement on the reach and quality of the services covering some low-density population areas in the country
We are delighted to support Telebras as part of the GESAC Program and at the same time contribute to the social advancement of communities that historically had little or no connectivity,” explained Omar Trujillo
Vice President of Enterprise Americas at SES
“Through a combination of our cutting-edge ground system technology
our Managed Enterprise via SES-17 service provides the throughput
high performance and flexibility required to connect underserved and isolated places across Brazil and throughout the Americas region with minimal initial capital expenditures
Satellite-enabled solutions play a fundamental role in reducing the digital divide especially for those areas and communities.”

The Brazilian economy is growing faster than other emerging markets
which has spurred IBM to invest more in offshore delivery within Brazil
The company is investing in the expansion of its service centers and trying to deliver differentiated capabilities with the objective of turning the local operation into an IT export center
IBM Brazil runs a Technology and Global Services Center
the unit is the second largest IBM delivery service center in the world
The Brazilian delivery center serves approximately 200 national and international companies that are based in the United States and other regions
Services such as system monitoring and infrastructure management have become most popular
followed by business process outsourcing (BPO) for call center and human resources management
the unit received an investment of US$ 22 million for business service capacity expansion
$10 million went towards construction of a data center based on Green IT concepts and virtualization to provide solutions based on cloud computing model
IBM Brazil is one of the main IT service providers for the external market
Brazil generated about US$ 3 billion in 2009 in IT services and is projected to reach $20 billion by 2020
positioning the country among the top five in the world’s ranking
Big Blue is running toe-to-toe against other majors like Accenture and HP
which expanded its base significantly after acquiring EDS
Brazil generated about US$ 3 billion in 2009 in IT services and is projected to reach $20 billion by 2020
positioning the country among the top five in the world’s ranking
“The IT exports are growing in Brazil and the country already has the capacity to turn into an offshore hub”, states Rogério Oliveira, IBM president for Latin America, who believes the local market in generating critical mass. As an example of this, he mentioned the recent acquisition of 55% of CPM Braxis national company by France-based technology and information provider Capgemini
the fusion with the French company strengthens the local companies
“Their business makes Brazil more competitive”
adding that he’s not afraid of the competition with more than one international player
IBM tries to stand apart by selling a variety of services
including an infrastructure to business application
Oliveira has – not surprisingly – very deep knowledge of the services market
Instructed in Computer Science in the Universidade de Campinas and with an MBA from the Fundação Getúlio Vargas
having managed the Brazilian subsidiary between 2002 and 2007
He participated in the transformation which brought IBM out of its hardware-only focus into services
services represented around 25% of the business and in 2006 that ratio increased to over 40%
Oliveria took charge of all IBM Latin America operations three years ago
and currently leads 20 countries in the region
When he was leading the Brazilian operation
Oliveira was able to place the subsidiary among the top ten IBM delivery operations
Brazil has emerged as a critical part of the firm’s emerging market services strategy
Oliveira admits that Brazil will achieve its real offshore potential once it overcome several obstacles. He understands the difficulties the country faces in export IT services because of his role as president of Brasscom
an entity created by leading IT services executives several years ago to promote exported professional services to the international market
He points out that one of the greatest difficulties faced by the services suppliers is the high cost of IT labor that is double the costs of Argentina. where IBM also has delivery facilities
Roughly 70% of service companies’ costs are payroll based
and as result they operate at a disadvantage compared with India
China and even with countries in Latin America
Another barrier is the lack of differentiated services that add real value to the actual service
“The country has to deliver sophisticated services and not call center services”
highlighting the need for investments in innovative solutions that offer competitive differentiation
IBM has just chosen Brazil to be the headquarters of two projects
One is a Rio De Janeiro operation – the third of its kind in the world – focused on developing applications for oil
a laboratory that will search and create devices to make a more intelligent planet
Both will operate together to serve local and international client demands

This is the hilarious moment a drug gang's guard dog laid down on the ground alongside the criminal as they were arrested in Brazil during a drugs bust.
Narcotics cops arrested three men on a ranch in Hortolandia, Sao Paulo state, on Thursday and footage of the raid shows them lying face-down on the floor with their hands cuffed behind their backs.
And the gang's massive Rottweiler decided to surrender too and flopped down beside the three suspects.
The officers seized 1,176 bricks containing 1.1 tonnes of marijuana from the property.
According to Narcotics Police, the drugs had been shipped to the house in Hortolandia from Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul state.
But police had been monitoring the property and swept in when the delivery arrived.
Cops believe the drugs were destined to be sold in and around Campinas, Sao Paulo state.
The men, one of whom owns the house, were taken to the Narcotics Police headquarters in nearby Americana.
The dog remained in the property with the female owner of the land around the house, who police say is not involved in drug trafficking.
Cops will return to the ranch today to check on the Rottweiler and two other dogs to see if the the animal protection services need to be called.

a group of 245 adventurists jumped off a 98-foot tall bridge in an attempt to set a new world record in rope jumping
The death-defying event took place on Sunday (22 October) on a bridge in Hortolandia
about 68 miles northwest of Sao Paulo city
falling almost simultaneously and swinging back and forth forming waves in the air before coming to a standstill
said a total of 400 people were involved in the event
which surpassed a previous Brazilian attempt made in April 2016 with 149 participants
An unofficial record was set in Tver in Russia in July 2012
Guinness World Records have not issued any official statement on the latest attempt
but the organisers were hoping for a confirmation of a new world record
The organisers said they used a total of 20km of rope and 1,000 harnesses for the act
Fereira examined the ropes before the jump and ensured the assembly of complicated harnesses and bolts were as per requirement for the feat
The safety gear assembly is similar to those used in professional mountaineering
Rope jumping is slightly different from bungee jumping
in which the ropes have bounce allowing the jumper to bounce back to the original spot
the jumpers remain dangling at the end of the rope
American rock climber Dan Osman is regarded by some as the pioneer of rope jumping
He died in a jump from the Leaning Tower summit in Yosemite National Park in 1998 after his rope failed
