Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan
has provided a detailed account of how she successfully attended the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting in New York
despite not being officially nominated by the Nigerian government
In an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES on Sunday
Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan explained that she registered for the meeting online as a senator and secured her accreditation because she was already on IPU’s mailing list as a past attendee
The senator noted that she personally funded her trip to the global parliamentary gathering after receiving approval to attend
The suspension does not remove my legitimacy as a senator
I attended the same programme last year and was already on the mailing list
I bought my own ticket and funded my trip and participation at the event,” she told PREMIUM TIMES
This is not her first attendance at an IPU event
to the 148th IPU General Assembly in Geneva
2024 as part of Nigeria’s official delegation
During the assembly, Mr Akpabio, called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and the unconditional release of all hostages
He also called for access to humanitarian aid for victims of the war conflict zone

Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan explained that she attended the recent IPU event through her past participation in a meeting organised by the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW)
Her presence at an IPU event in Geneva in 2024 as part of Nigeria’s delegation also helped
She added that the IPU event is not exclusive to government officials but also open to individuals and civil society organisations as well
Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan clarified that she travelled to New York with a visa on her ordinary Nigerian passport and not with an official passport
Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan described her suspension from the Senate as illegal
take away her legitimacy as an elected senator
her six-month suspension explicitly prohibits her from identifying herself as a senator
she insisted that she attended the IPU meeting in her official capacity and spoke as a legitimate representative of her people
Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan also alleged that plans are underway to arrest her upon her return to Nigeria
“… I’m aware there are plans underway to have me arrested as soon as I arrive Abuja,” she said
“The Senate President Akpabio sent three staff headed by the Chargè D’Affairs of the Nigerian embassy in New York to evacuate me from the United Nations premises right after my speech
I was rescued by parliamentarians from other countries and the security.”

has yet to respond to multiple telephone calls made to him by this reporter
His response to a text message sent to him is still being awaited
the telephone number of the Senate’s spokesperson
Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan’s attendance at the IPU meeting has triggered a government investigation
PREMIUM TIMES had earlier reported that Nigeria’s internal and external intelligence agencies have launched a probe into how she gained access to the meeting without official nomination
A high-ranking administration official and two top security officials involved in the inquiry confided in PREMIUM TIMES that the State Security Service (SSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA)
are working to determine how Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan attended the international meeting without approval
who facilitated her trip and accreditation
and whether her participation was orchestrated by interest groups to embarrass Nigeria
Nigeria believes Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan did not follow the required diplomatic protocols before gaining access to the IPU meeting on 11 March
where she addressed her suspension from the Nigerian Senate
alleging that it was politically motivated to silence her for speaking out against misconduct in the legislative chamber
she raised allegations of sexual harassment against the senate president

Morocco was elected Tuesday to the Bureau of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights
one of the organization’s four main bodies

He was unanimously chosen to represent the Arab geopolitical group on the committee
His election was seen as recognition of his ongoing contributions to the IPU’s work on democracy and human rights
including proposals on youth and women’s political participation
The Arab group praised Ait Mik’s leadership on issues such as migrant rights
and efforts to counter hate speech and discrimination
Ait Mik previously joined the Bureau of the Forum of Young Parliamentarians in 2023 and was appointed rapporteur of the forum during the current session
He will lead the preparation of a report for a draft resolution to be debated at the 151st IPU Assembly
Morocco’s election reflected its strong international standing in promoting democratic values and human rights
“Morocco has always been recognized as a country committed to democratic principles and the rule of law,” he commented after the election

WHO joined delegations from 130 countries at the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva
to support parliamentarians in their work to advance health as a political priority in the face of serious emergencies including conflicts
“Our greatest challenge is how we ensure this scientific golden age can be used to address the challenges of our time, and do so in a way that increases equity,” said Dr Gaudenz Silberschmidt, WHO Director for Health and Multilateral Partnerships, at the Assembly’s general debate on the theme of harnessing science
technology and innovation for a more peaceful and sustainable future
“This will not happen by a passive trickle-down effect
The decisions you make really matter,” he said
He urged IPU members to support the last mile towards the approval of a pandemic prevention
preparedness and response accord agreement
and sustainable financing for global health
particularly for complex agendas like UHC which require action from so many different groups and agility in the face of mega trends including climate change
evolving geopolitics and advancing science and technology
Parliamentarians also need access to the best available data, especially in areas of health and rights that are stigmatized and politicized. At a workshop on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) – organized jointly by IPU
the Human Reproduction Programme (HRP) and the Partnership for Maternal
Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH) – delegates from Malawi
Suriname and Zambia talked about challenges in their countries and the effect on communities
including high rates of adolescent pregnancy and early child marriage
advocacy and partnership to ensure that both in and out of school comprehensive sexuality education programmes are in place
and work to remove legal barriers that restrict adolescents’ access to sexual and reproductive health services
Following a renewed commitment by 194 countries at the Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly (WHA) earlier this year
maternal health is high on the political agenda and quality-assured medicines for maternal health are an area for parliamentary action
In many countries, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, healthcare providers cannot trust the effectiveness of medicines they rely on to save the lives of pregnant women and their newborn babies. A substantial proportion of medicines for maternal health care are substandard quality
An event on the margins of the IPU Assembly – co-organized by IPU
WHO and HRP in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) – brought health experts together with parliamentarians from countries where substandard medicines are a particular challenge to maternal health
“Improving access to quality-assured medicines is an important part of addressing unforgivable and persistent levels of preventable death during pregnancy and delivery
but it cannot be done by the health sector acting alone,” said Dr Pascale Allotey
Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research
“WHO and IPU’s commitment to addressing the political dimensions of health challenges is vital to advancing health
The IPU is the global organization of national parliaments
It was founded in 1889 as the first multilateral political organization in the world
encouraging cooperation and dialogue between all nations
the IPU comprises 180 national Member Parliaments and 15 regional parliamentary bodies
It also defends the human rights of parliamentarians through a dedicated committee made up of MPs from around the world

Morocco’s pioneering experience in responding to the challenges posed by conflicts and their impact on sustainable development was highlighted on Sunday in Tashkent
during the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly
Morocco’s global approach reflects an integrated strategic vision
which combines efficient diplomacy to comprehensive development
member of the House of Representatives Mustapha Raddad said during the IPU’s Standing Committee on Sustainable Development
dubbed “Parliamentary strategies to mitigate the long-lasting impact of conflicts
he underscored Morocco’s active diplomatic role
which contributed successfully and tangibly to the resolution of several regional conflicts
“Our efforts in Libya and endeavors to mediate and promote peace in conflict zones in Africa were more than just diplomatic efforts
but an investment in a stable and prosperous future for the entire region,” he said
Morocco also did not lose sight of the importance of construction and development as vital pillars for lasting peace
particularly in the brotherly African countries
He also recalled the ambitious initiatives launched with a view of developing infrastructure in conflict-affected areas
involving the improvement of road and transport networks and the provision of basic services
These initiatives “were not just material achievements
but a message of hope and solidarity with local communities,” Raddad stressed
The Kingdom’s strategy for dealing with the effects of conflict is rooted in its belief in the importance of investing in people
which is why it has placed education and capacity-building at the heart of its development policies
Morocco’s experience confirms that tackling the effects of conflicts requires a “comprehensive and integrated” approach
comprehensive economic development and investment in human capital
The Kingdom’s experience is “not only a local model
but a call for international common action,” because today’s challenges transcend national borders and require united efforts at the international level
the Standing Committee adopted a resolution aiming to bolster the role of parliaments in mitigating the negative impact of conflict on sustainable development
and developing policies that foster reconstruction and development in conflict zones
The resolution also underlines the shared responsibility of parliaments to safeguard the well-being of future generations
and aims to bridge the gaps between different stakeholders in order to achieve inclusive and sustainable development

can handle multiple data points and tasks simultaneously
thereby speeding up training and inference processes
which together enable GPU to be gradually applied in the AI field
particularly in deep learning and machine learning
Although both IPU and GPU can be used in the AI domain
such as computational architecture and memory architecture
the President and General Manager of Greater China at Graphcore
explained that the Graphcore C600 has 1,472 processing cores per IPU
capable of running 8,832 independent program threads in parallel
NVIDIA’s GPU SM Core (Stream Multiprocessor Core) has around 100 cores
varying with different product configurations
NVIDIA’s GPUs have a two-level memory structure
The first level consists of around 40-50 MB of memory within the chip
Lu summarized that the IPU’s architecture shows greater advantages for tasks with high requirements for sparsity and high dimensions relative to to GPU
its performance might be similar to GPU or slightly less competitive

Today is finally the day. After years of waiting, the Intel IPU E2100 DPU is finally out. Not to be confused with the Intel Xeon E-2100 series
the new DPU uses Arm cores and offers hardware offloads for storage
Codenamed “Mt Evans” we have been following this line for some time
This has two ports that can be configured as 1x 200GbE
and also supports breaking out to 4x 25GbE
There is also a 1GbE out-of-band management port on the cards as well
The card has 16 Arm Neoverse N1 cores with a 32MB cache and 3 channels of 16GB LPDDR4x memory for 48GB total
The idea behind the Mt Evans IPU was to create a DPU that is more akin to an AWS Nitro solution for Google Cloud. That means offloading things like NVMe over Fabric as well as securing the network with Intel QuickAssist derived IP
The Intel IPU E2100 is the first public version of the series for customers outside of Google
During Hot Chips 33, we covered the Intel Mount Evans DPU IPU Arm Accelerator and first saw the card in person at Intel Vision 2022
Intel initially focused support for the card with Google
but it is now bringing that support to a more general audience
which was an IPU for another hyper-scaler:
If you want to learn more about DPUs, see our What is a DPU A Data Processing Unit Quick Primer
I liked the FPGA video you did a few years ago so I’d like to see this
Imagine that VMware still hasn’t announced support and Pat G’s at Intel now
These still look like computers on PCIe cards to me
You still need an expensive host machine to plug the expensive computers on PCIe cards into
When reality sinks in then Intel & nVidia & etc will just package the same stuff up in 1U cases at much higher density – more practical and a new love interest for the tech press
So IPU E2100 is just a generic version of E2000
Is it known whether there was some sort of exclusivity period with Google; or was Intel delayed by some aspect of getting it ready for general release(presumably software or firmware that wasn’t substantially Google’s
since they have presumably been shipping working hardware to Google)
It just seems like a weirdly long time between being done enough for a specific customer and general availability; especially when none of the individual ingredients(neoverse N1 cores
and Intel 100GbE) are at the bleeding edge engineering samples only stage

The Inter-Parliamentary Union is an international non-government organisation that coordinates the activities of parliaments around the world
It was founded in 1889 and has observer status at the UN
The parliaments of 143 countries are members of the union
I also have just mentioned it in my address to my colleagues – the work of representatives of the representative bodies of authority – pardon the tautology – is much needed
And when it comes to overcoming difficulties in the international arena
I mean that often the parliamentary tools are the only ones to start dialogues between those who are interested in finding solutions to certain acute issues
That is why we also view your visit here in the same vein
We will be able to say a few more words to elaborate on this now
