These pollutants that are released into the atmosphere and reach Irati on the wind accumulate in the environment for a long time
A study by the IBeA research group of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) revealed relatively high concentrations of three groups of organic pollutants
The study concluded that some of these pollutants come from nearby urban areas; others originate from combustion processes currently taking place in agriculture; and finally the ones corresponding to pollution caused by pesticides and some electrical insulators before they were banned several years ago
“We measured significant concentrations of persistent organic compounds in each species of lichen and moss in the Irati forest, but they are no higher than the concentrations measured in other similar places,” said Alberto de Diego ,researcher in the UPV/EHU’s IBeA research group
in a joint study with members of the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) and the University of Navarre
members of the IBeA group used a species of lichen (Parmelia sulcata) and a species of moss (Hypnum cupressiforme) from Irati as sentinels or biomonitors to determine the organic pollution in the atmosphere
Persistent organic compounds are toxic and three types were explored in this study: PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) are by-products of combustion processes
in particular; PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) were used in electrical insulation and are currently banned; and OCPs (organochlorine pesticides) used to be routinely used in agriculture and are also currently banned
“These organic compounds travel a long way through the atmosphere on the wind,” explained Ainara Gredilla
“and they build up in the environment: they are absorbed and accumulated by living beings
Areas at high altitudes are very sensitive to persistent organic pollutants
so we wanted to find out the extent to which they had accumulated in the lichens and mosses in Irati
the Irati forest is regarded as a clean environment
there is no human activity other than sustainable livestock and agriculture”
the Irati Forest is one of the largest and best-preserved protected beech and fir forests in Europe
From urban centres and activities dating back several decades
PAH concentrations are significantly higher than those of the other two pollutants
The researchers say that pollution that is transported through the atmosphere over long distances should not be underestimated
but the study showed that urban and agricultural practices that have been around Irati for decades have exerted an impact on air quality
“You may think that part of the pollution has come from and continues to come from urban areas
but to a great extent the impact of local agriculture is also significant,” said the UPV/EHU researchers
there are still controlled burning processes in some areas around the Pyrenees
and we believe that there are still many PAHs coming from there
To reduce the presence of PAHs in the atmosphere of the Irati forest
controlling the combustion processes that take place around the forest is mandatory
traces of pesticides that were used in the past have not been eliminated (OCPs).” As for PCBs
“we suspect they come from electrical insulators used around the Irabia reservoir
It is likely that the PCBs used in the past have remained there and are still detectable today.”
The researchers insist that such studies serve to “confirm
that these pollutants have a great capacity to reach very distant places from where they have been produced and to accumulate in naturally clean places like Irati
even if the concentrations are not very high
it is something that needs to be monitored to prevent future problems.” They also consider it necessary to pursue the research “to analyse changes according to seasons and/or years
and to confirm the trends that have been explained in this study.”
This research was supported by funding from the European PYNATEO research project and from the Basque Government to finance consolidated research groups
With the information obtained from the project
it has been possible to launch two PhD theses

Irati Idiakez Lopez (ESP) and Darian Haynes (USA)A record-breaking 122 World Cup and Continental Cup Para Snowboard athletes gathered once again in Landgraaf (NED) for the season opener – a competition held inside the venue’s iconic indoor snow facility
The event featured two Banked Slalom races conducted in a revamped format inspired by Snowboard Cross
after which the four fastest riders advanced to head-to-head “heats.” The top qualifier faced the fourth seed
while the second and third qualifiers competed against each other
The winners of these heats moved on to the grand final
while the remaining two riders battled for third place in a small final
This format keeps the competition open for longer
giving athletes more chances to shine – it’s exciting!– Alex Andreis
FIS Para Snowboard Race DirectorPositive feedback from the season’s first winnersThe season’s first victors embraced the new format despite acknowledging its challenges
the new format is cool,” said Maxime Montaggioni (FRA)
who claimed victory in the first Banked Slalom and finished third in the second race in the Men’s Upper Limb category
even in a Banked Slalom where we compete one by one
I’m just the illustration that it’s not necessary to have the best time to win the competition
I think you have to be focused until the end
You can’t stay with your good time at qualification; you have to do more
Montaggioni’s remarks were exemplified by Aron Fahrni (SUI)
whose standout performances across the final "heats" underscored the format's competitive dynamics
Fahrni clocked the fastest time in the heats during the small final
ultimately securing third place behind Montaggioni and Jacopo Luchini (ITA)
advanced to the big final where he emerged victorious
highlighting the importance of sustained focus and strategic execution in the new format
who secured double victories in the Women’s Upper Limb category
a double winner in the Men’s Lower Limb 1 category
This new format blends elements of that with single Banked Slalom
it was really unique and I did find it enjoyable so it was really cool to try it out and hopefully we’ll continue to do that
because I think it’s more interesting for TV and for people to watch.”
winning the first World Cup race of the season carries significant weight
offering insight into athletes’ current form and the effectiveness of their summer training
“It’s always important to win the first race,” said Emanuel Perathoner (ITA)
who aims to continue his dominance in the Men’s Lower Limb 2 category across Banked Slalom and Snowboard Cross
“You don’t know if you’re fast until you compete against the others.”
who triumphed twice in the Women’s Lower Limb category
echoed this sentiment: “It’s always important to win the first race of the season
and finally it’s a victory so I’m very very happy.”
While the race in Landgraaf marked a promising start
most athletes have their sights set on the 2024/25 season’s pinnacle event: the World Championships in Big White
I’m really looking forward to the World Championships
My goals are obviously to win another world title and continue to dominate Banked Slalom as much as possible
And also see if I can step up my progress in boarder cross
So hopefully we’ll get there.– Noah Elliott (USA)A Competitive Chinese Delegation ReturnsThis season opener also marked the return of a strong Chinese delegation to the international circuit
several Paralympic medalists from China are starting their comeback in the Continental Cup to regain enough points for World Cup participation and
to qualify for the World Championships and the Milan-Cortina Paralympics
“It was important to score big here in Landgraaf,” said Maxime Montaggioni
“The Chinese athletes in the Europa Cup don’t have enough points to be in the World Cup yet
but they will soon and their times are really crazy
so it’s a good thing for me to achieve the first place
but I’m realistic and I know I have to work a lot to keep up for the rest of the season.”

‘Irati´ is a historical adventure-fantasy movie that blends Basque legends
It is a story about the clash of religion between Christian and Muslim warriors
fusing Basque popular imaginary and mythology. The budget of ´Irati´ amounts to 4,3 million euros
making it the largest Basque production in history.
‘Irati’ is set in the 8th century
at a time when Christianity was spreading across Europe and pagan beliefs were fading
When Charlemagne´s army crosses the Pyrenees
the leader of the valley asks the ancestral Basque goddess Mari for help to protect his people and manages to defeat the enemy in the battle of Roncesvalles in exchange for his life
he makes his son Eneko promise to protect and guide his people in the new era
Eneko fulfills his promise with a mission: to recover his father´s body buried next to Charlemagne´s treasure
he will need the help of a mysterious local pagan woman called Irati
The two of them journey deep into a strange and inhospitable forest
‘Irati´ features characters from Basque mythology such as ´Mari´ (personification of Mother Nature
´Aker´ (spirit in the form of a goat
´Sugaar´ (husband of Mari and deity in the form of a snake)
‘Lamiak´ (women with bird-like feet
´Gentilak´ (giant pre-Christianity inhabitants of the Basque Country)
´Basajaun´ (protector of the forest)
´Tartalo´ (cyclops who lives in caves)..
are the characters Urkijo uses to introduce us to Basque mythology
highlighting the relationship between Basque society
´Irati´ brings a number of characters and events from 8th century Basque history to the big screen
is one of the main characters in ´Irati´
The film introduces us to Eneko before he was king
The movie opens with a battle between the Basques and the Franks known as the Battle of Roncesvalles
in which Charlemagne was defeated after his army set fire to Pamplona
The film combines Basque mythology and history, using Euskara
It is often said to be the oldest language in Europe and bears no resemblance to other Indo-European languages
In keeping with the film’s historical setting
Urkijo filmed ‘Irati’ in Basque
in a combination of 13th century and modern Euskara
The myths and legends that he highlights in the film are linked to the Basque language and this is how he wants to transmit them to the audience
‘Irati´ uses the Basque names of goddesses
Urkijo wanted the film to reflect the Basque that would have been spoken at that time
So says the film´s slogan and centrepiece of the soundtrack
Paul Urkijo wants to immortalise the Basque tales
myths and culture because everything that has a name

SITGES 2022
by Júlia Olmo
17/10/2022 - Basque director Paul Urkijo makes a medieval fantasy adventure film as daring as it is moving
Urkijo's film is a sort of Basque Lord of the Rings
which is already a great credit to its level of production
Irati goes back to the 8th century to tell the story of Eneko (Eneko Sagardoy)
a young nobleman and Christian from the Pyrenees who must fulfil the promise he made to his late father: to protect and lead his people into the new era
buried in a pagan manner next to Charlemagne's treasure
he will need the help of Irati (Edurne Azkarate)
an enigmatic pagan from the area whom he met in his childhood
the two young men will venture into a strange forest where "everything that has a name exists"
There are several fascinating things about Irati
Urkijo chooses a difficult and barely trodden path in Spain (to make a blockbuster with little resources to fit) and achieves an incredible result
The director's aesthetic approach is breath-taking
he manages to bring expressionism to the forest
the cinematography with natural light and real fire in the dark is one of the most stunning aspects of the film
Everything that accompanies the production also manages to live up to it: the artwork
all contribute to creating this unique magical world
This personality and clarity from the filmmaker can also be seen in the script
in the textual materials he uses to tell the story
drawing on the stories of Basque mythology from the director's childhood memories to create a new space of sentimental memory
he achieves one of the great virtues of fiction: starting from his own
as in classical literature (also present in the film)
Irati speaks poetically about timeless human issues
the struggle for a place and the value of that struggle
the classic concept of "the beautiful death" (filling one's life with deeds to achieve eternal glory
the search for your origins and the price of that search
Urkijo manages to create the ideal framework
to narrate all these themes with epic beauty
Irati manages to be an adventure film (also a love story) as daring as it is moving
A film that achieves a very personal magic
also manages to touch on the beauty of the strange
Irati is a production from the companies Bainet Zinema, Ikusgarri Films, Kilima Media and ETB, which will be distributed in Spain by Filmax on 24th February 2023

Paul Urkijo: “I’d like other people to be interested in exploring this topic”
being the biggest Basque production to date
has had a significant positive impact on Basque cinema
garnering tremendous success both in cinemas and at national and international festivals
It has also enjoyed considerable public acclaim
The film has won the audience award at several festivals and in just a few weeks became the most widely viewed Basque language film
‘Irati´ features characters from Basque mythology including ´Mari´ (personification of Mother Nature
´Sugaar´ (Mari’s husband and deity in the form of a snake)
Lamiak´ (women with the legs of aquatic beings
´Zezengorri´ (god in the form of a bull
and ´Tartalo´ (cyclops that lives in caves)
Urkijo introduces us to various characters who enable us to explore Basque mythology
emphasizing the deep connection between Basque society
We spoke with Paul Urkijo about topics such as the origin of the film ´Irati´
Basque culture and the making of a fantasy film in Basque from an industrial perspective
What is the origen of ‘Irati’ How did you shape this narrative about Basque mythology
The original concept of the film was inherited from childhood and the stories my parents would tell me when we went to the mountains
I’ve had a special interest in these characters
My interest in the tradition of my culture sparked the idea to create ´Irati´
I began to explore the subject of mythology with my first feature film
‘Errementari’ (‘The Devil and the Blacksmith’
After that project I wanted to revive more ancient myths and legends from Basque culture
and above all to write a story about the figure of Mari and her Pantheon
The 1980s comic ´El ciclo de Irati´ served as a great inspiration for me in creating the film
the comic ´El ciclo de Irati´ narrates the story of Eneko and Irati
from a perspective tailored for children and young readers
It’s similar to the Asterix and Obelix comics
I wanted to make an epic film based on Basque mythology
I wanted to cultivate the genre but geared to a more adult audience
my aim was to explore the duality within the characters and their narratives
while also providing a historical context: 13th century Basque Country in the Kingdom of Pamplona at the Battle of Roncesvalles
The characters in the film speak old Basque
What was it like working in the Basque language and especially the language used in the film
The decision to make the film in Basque was clear to me from the beginning
firstly because it is my language and I want to live in Basque
why shouldn´t I make a film like this in Basque
The concept of the film and all the legends
and names of characters involved are firmly rooted in the Basque language
The rich history and cultural heritage of the Basque people have been preserved and passed down to us through the Basque language
Jose Miguel Barandiaran (famous Basque ethnographer) collected these stories in Basque from village to village
I feel that I’m just another link in the chain
I’ve had the opportunity to make my contribution through this film and
Thanks to the Basque language we have collected this legacy
and that for me is something that must not be lost
In order to stay true to historical accuracy
we made the deliberate choice to utilize old Basque
He had previously worked with Lazkano on the film ´Errementari´ (Paul Urkijo
2017) to work in the old Basque language spoken in Alava
Gorka collaborated closely with numerous philologists during the scriptwriting process for ´Irati´ to ensure a respectful and meticulous approach to the project
The aim was also to make the film easy to understand
While Gorka has done an excellent job infusing the ancient language into the film
the main objective throughout the process was to ensure that the audience could understand and engage with the story
The motto of the film and the main theme of the soundtrack is ´What has a name exists´
What message do you want to convey to viewers
´What has a name exists´ is a message that exists in Basque mythology and in several ancient languages
I think this phrase encapsulates the whole concept and meaning of ´Irati´
I want to send a message of preservation: the protection of Basque mythology
I also want to convey a message regarding the protection and preservation of nature
The characters and the ancient legends of Basque mythology are closely linked to nature
The dualisms portrayed in the film also serve as a means to emphasize the importance of respecting and valuing nature
The use of the Basque language also relates to this concept
My intention is not only to raise awareness about this topic but also to inspire others to explore it
I aim to inject fresh energy into the fantasy genre in filmmaking
What was it like to make ´Irati´
Obtaining financing for the project was a complex process from the outset
Given that the budget for ´Irati´ falls within the range of a medium-sized film in Spain
it was quite challenging to create the epic film we’d envisioned
It’s a genre that’s not easy to distribute and making the film in Basque didn’t make our work any easier
the production process of ´Irati´ proved to be complex and time-consuming
primarily due to the specific requirements of the genre
One notable example was the filming of the Battle of Roncesvalles
During the film I had to use various artistic solutions to achieve the desired result
on natural spaces and beautiful landscapes
Our intention was to embrace and capture the beauty that nature provides
utilizing it to enhance the visual experience of the film
How is the progress and reception of the film going
We’re very pleased with the film´s journey
I didn´t know how the public would receive ´Irati´
It´s a film I´ve made about something I love
I try to put myself in the place of the audience and I´ve made something I´d like to see
When we had the first screening at the Sitges Festival
it was wonderful to see how the audience received the film
´Irati´ received a warm reception at the San Sebastian Horror and Fantasy Film Week
where it was honored with both critical acclaim and the audience award
Tenerife we also received the audience award
The film is generating a highly positive response both within the Basque Country and on a national level
I make films for the public so being give the audience award is the most enriching thing I can take away
Are you making an effort to expand the film´s distribution on an international scale
we started to take ‘Irati’ to festivals abroad
in March we were at the FrightFest in Glasgow; in April at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival
Fantaspoa in Brazil and the Fantastic Filmfestival in Australia; in May we took the film to the International Film Festival in Seattle
We’re working on going to more foreign festivals too
Restaurants abound in the heavily touristed Gothic Quarter
a bustling spot popular with locals thanks to its excellent pintxos
traditional Basque tapas served on bread and speared with a toothpick
but you’re really here for the experience of eating pintxos
which means standing shoulder-to-shoulder at the bar and helping yourself to the buffet of bite-size offerings
and the blue cheese topped with quince paste and walnuts
which are brought out at regular intervals from the kitchen
And don’t toss your toothpicks—that’s how the bill is tallied

Narratively satisfying and visually remarkable fairy tale incorporates ancient Basque legend to mesmerising effect
The biggest outpouring of goodwill at FrightFest was reserved for Paul Urkijo Alijo, director of the dark fantasy tale Irati
With a mid-afternoon screening scuppered by issues with the subtitles
it was moved to a late-night slot while the he and the FrightFest team beavered away behind the scenes to get it resolved
This sadly meant that there were perhaps fewer in the audience than there should have been
but those that remained were treated to a tremendous adult fairy tale full of heroic derring-do and sumptuous visuals
and the filmmaker got a deserved moment of triumph after a testing day
a woman deeply in tune with the natural world and a devotee of the ancient mysticism
who knows where Eneko’s father is currently interred
This suggests where the film’s sympathies ultimately lie: with the mystical and the ancient
The idea of old deities withering as belief in them has dwindled down the centuries has been covered in contemporary fantasy before
by such luminaries as Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman in Small Gods and American Gods respectively
and Urkijo Alijo’s vision stands alongside those giants in quality
while its distinctive and personal narrative feels completely unique
Eneko Sagardoy is impressive as the driven nobleman who comes to respect
but the film rightly belongs to Edurne Azkarate
She has her own distinct reasons beyond religious devotion why she adheres to the old ways
and Azkarate’s constantly flitting eyes and coiled-spring fight-or-flight tension radiates suspicion of this Christian man and his entitlement
yet is slowly won over by his bravery and sense of honour
especially given it’s a role of limited dialogue
but Azkarate is astonishing in what should be
Irati is a remarkable achievement on a comparatively tiny budget and a rare example of a fantasy narrative being every bit as fulfilling as the sense of spectacle
a deeply strange and distinctive fairy tale
and the kind of love story that would have J.R.R
Rigorous abortion drama is uncompromising in both its subject matter and its presentation
all whilst making a vital statement on the climate change crisis

Kigumo MP Joseph Munyoro has called on the government to commence construction of the proposed Irati dam which would see an increase of water coverage in the constituency
he had initiated talks with the leadership of Athi Water Development Works Agency on the construction of the dam proposed to be done at upper parts of Kigumo
Speaking when he met residents of Kinyona ward the MP observed that his constituency was disadvantaged when it comes to water connections noting that water supplied to Nairobi is sourced from Ndakaini dam which gets water from streams originating from Kigumo
especially at lower parts of the constituency which receive minimal rains
“It was unfortunate that much of the water consumed in Nairobi and its environs is fetched from rivers originating in Kigumo yet the locals suffer as they search for the important commodity,” he said
The Irati dam is proposed to supply water to the local areas including Muthithi
“The lower parts have been discriminated against for a long time as they are forced to fetch water from boreholes and streams
Construction of the dam is overdue and once completed
the entire constituency will have piped water ending the era of residents trekking for long distances to access clean water for domestic use,” stated Munyoro
He added that the neighbouring Maragua constituency has its Maragua dam that was designed for use in the lower part of the constituency
The legislator further noted that the Karinga- Kinyona Irrigation scheme is earmarked to be implemented to support horticulture farming and food production in the locality
Munyoro said elected leaders from Murang’a were pushing to ensure its completion so as to connect the counties east of Aberdare forests with those in the Rift Valley for economic gains
He explained that Kigumo and Kangema residents would enjoy the Mau Mau road as they have the highest kilometres compared to other constituencies

The project funded by World Bank among other development partners at a tune about than Sh
20 billion is earmarked to add water volume at Ndakaini Dam
the major source of water for Nairobi City County and its environs
An Engineer with the Athi Water Services Board
Alphaxard Kitheku on Friday told Murang’a County Development Implementation Coordination Committee (CDICC) that the contractor is currently working to complete lining of the tunnel after completion of excavation works
The tunnel is designed to draw water from three rivers within Murang’a County namely
Kitheku said construction of two intake weirs at Maragua and Irati are ongoing whereas the third intake at river Gikigie will commence early next year
“Construction of Irati River intake is at 98 percent complete and Maragua River intake weir is at 20 percent,” said the Engineer
The project was expected to be complete in December 2019 but due to challenges
He further noted that construction of raw and treated water transmission pipelines from Ndakaini Dam to Kirogo water treatment plant and to Nairobi is ongoing
The Engineer observed that 15.5 kilometre out of the total 54 kilometre of pipes have been laid
“The project aims at conveying the raw water from Ndakaini to Kirogo Water Treatment Plant and treated water from Kirogo to Gigiri reservoirs in Nairobi,” explained Kitheku
especially area between Ndakaini Dam and Kirogo Water Treatment Plant has faced obstacles as some families objected the compensation given
“A family moved to court to block the construction works and the matter is still pending in court although we are still proceeding with the works as no injunction was given to halt the works,” added the Engineer
Kitheku said Athi Water Services Board is employing necessary intervention to see that the project is completed and operationalized by mid next year
The Tunnel is expected to increase water volume at Ndakaini Dam by 140

In the north of Spain you will find one of the most beautiful places in Spain
You don't have to travel to the German Black Forest to enter a forest of beech and fir trees with sturdy trunks and lush canopies
Just over an hour from Pamplona by car is the Selva de Irati
one of the most renowned nature reserves in the old continent
The Irati Forest forms an immense green patch of about 17.000 hectares that remains practically intact over time and human action
Gone is the logging that occurred in past centuries
where large areas of forest were cut down to build the ships that fought against England
The Irati River was used at that time as a river road to transport the logs to the Sangüesa sawmills
The natural regeneration of the forest was accompanied by the high rate of natural rainfall that is experienced in the area and which shows the formidable state of conservation in which it is found and the balance of each ecosystem
That is why the Irati Forest is a territory of singular profusion of life
The high rate of rainfall in this area causes the landscape to be full of torrents and streams that dot its intricate relief
which join at the foot of the Virgen de las Nieves hermitage to form the Irati river
A spectacular wonder of nature that is located in the eastern Pyrenees of Navarre
in a basin surrounded by mountains in front of the Aezkoa and Salazar valleys
An immense and extraordinary place to enjoy the environment in all its splendor
The 17.000 hectares of the Irati Forest are made up of two essential species: firs and beech
the chromatic variety reaches its peak with the arrival of autumn
when the green gives way to the warm browns
reds and yellows of the leaves of the trees
The glistening grasslands of the highlands and the dense forests of the Selva de Irati serve as habitat and refuge for numerous populations of wild animals such as foxes
The latter are the protagonists of autumn since it is the season of heat and the bellowing
with which they try to conquer the females
there are three nature reserves that protect the most precious areas of the environment
which thanks to its difficult access has achieved an optimal conservation of the enclave as it is not exposed to logging
Another of the reserves settled in the Selva de Irati is that of Tristuibartea
on the northern slope of Mount Petxuberro also in the Aezkoa valley
The third of the natural reserves of the Selva de Irati is located on Mount La Cuestion on an area of 64 hectares
which receives the name of Lizardoia because it occupies the north slope of the homonymous mount
It is considered the site of greatest interest in the Irati Forest due to the structure of the forest
The few access roads and its isolation have made it the longest-lived beech forest in the entire Iberian Peninsula
To enter the Irati Forest we have two main accesses: Ochagavía
the eastern access where the nature interpretation center is located and where visitors are informed of all the routes
next to the hermitage of the Virgen de las Nieves
there is another information center and various restaurant services are also offered
And in Arrazola there is also another near the Orbaizeta arms factory
declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 2007 for being a treasure of XNUMXth century architecture
Any time is perfect to get into nature and be captivated by that wonderful immensity that it transmits
visiting the Irati Forest during autumn has a special and unique charm due to the explosion of colors reflected in the vegetation
A wonderful image that will remain etched in the retina forever
The visit can be done on your own or by hiring the services of one of the companies in the area
