Trinity College Professor of Music Eric A. Galm and the Trinity Samba Fest have received the Society for Ethnomusicology’s 2024 Judith McCulloh Public Sector Award
recognizing the valuable impact that this cross-cultural event has had on the public
Samba Fest is a Brazilian and world music festival produced by Galm and Trinity College that is admission-free and open to all
The award also includes special recognition for the Meninos de Minas and the Associação das Guardas do Congado de Itabira
This award is given every other year to an individual or organization carrying out a major public-sector project that has attained significant recognition
and whose ongoing work contributes significantly to the public’s understanding of ethnomusicology—the study of music in its social and cultural contexts
Recipients of the award demonstrate an overall impact on partner communities outside of academic institutions
along with high-quality artistry and scholarship
“I am excited to receive this award because it is not only an honor and privilege
but also opens up possibilities and new avenues for us to expand Samba Fest on an even greater scale,” said Galm
“Samba Fest was created to showcase musical abilities and bring in people from Hartford and beyond to celebrate,” added Galm
who launched Samba Fest in 1997 with support from a Mellon Foundation Global-Urban Initiative Award administered by Trinity
His students studied with local musicians and presented their findings at an information booth during Samba Fest
showcasing the history and artistry of the musicians who were performing on the main stage
Programming during the weeks preceding the event generally includes public school performances
The festivals have offered diverse activities over the years
which help to promote Brazilian music and culture beyond the stage of musical performance
Galm books musicians from around the world to perform at Samba Fest each spring on Trinity’s campus
the Samba Fest has featured the United States and Connecticut debut performances for 13 artists and groups
and has presented nearly 50 different artists and groups
Galm also created an academic performance course called the “Trinity Samba Ensemble,” open to all students
no matter their musical ability or previous experience
The Trinity Samba Ensemble also performs as part of the event’s annual musical lineup
“This festival is important to Trinity on many levels—first and foremost in the way students can bring together academic material with cultural experts,” Galm said
“They can learn from reference sources and books
but they gain a full understanding when hearing the way people’s lived experiences and music connects to their culture.”
the Samba Fest has grown from an audience of 300 people to an audience of 4,000 in a single day
The festival has engaged directly with more than 70,000 people
and even more through live broadcasts on Trinity College’s WRTC-FM radio station and international streaming online
The event has showcased Brazilian artists and groups
and has attained national and international recognition
Samba Fest has become a signature annual event at the College
“When you look at Trinity’s mission statement
the Samba Fest embodies the idea of engaging and connecting throughout the Greater Hartford region,” said Galm
“I see the work I have done as a labor of love,” Galm added
“We are so lucky to have a strong network of artists collaborating
and sharing their cultures with the community.”

Vale will soon begin preliminary work on building a second Downstream Containment Structure in the Pontal System in Itabira, Minas Gerais, close to the Minervino and Cordão Nova Vista Dikes. On Wednesday, July 17, the Public Prosecutors’ Office completed an independent technical audit of additional technical information required for the work to start. The project is due to be completed in the first half of 2025.
The new structure will be built in the Bela Vista neighborhood, near Rua José Marinho Fernandes. It is a preventive measure to reinforce the safety of the local community during the de-characterization work on the dikes. The preliminary work will include clearing vegetation and building access roads. The continued demolition of properties included in the removal process and the legal requirements for this action are being handled together with the Municipal Environment Secretariat.
Downstream Containment Structure 2 will be approximately 330 meters long and 4.75 meters high at its highest point. It will be built using the same construction method as the Coqueirinho Downstream Containment Structure, a technology that uses circular metal piles. “This technology reduces vibrations, dust generation and noise in order to cause the least possible impact on nearby residents,” explains Luiz Coutinho, the De-Characterization Program’s implementation manager in Itabira.
The dikes will start to be dismantled after Downstream Containment Structure 2 has been built. The de-characterization of the structures is expected to be completed by 2029.
As with the construction of the Coqueirinho Downstream Containment Structure, the impacts caused by the construction of Downstream Containment Structure 2 will be controlled and mitigated by the company, and community representatives will be invited to monitor the execution of the work.
The construction of the new containment structure will require the relocation of 17 families. Vale has already contacted the families and the residents to be relocated are being compensated by the company, based on an Agreement signed with the Minas Gerais State Public Defender’s Office.
More than half of upstream structures in Itabira already eliminated
Of the total of 10 dams included in the Upstream Dam De-Characterization Program in Itabira, six have already been eliminated. The de-characterization work on Dike 2 ended in October 2023. In September 2022, Ipoema Dam at Meio Mine and Dike 3, also in the Pontal System, were eliminated. Before that, Dikes 4 and 5 in the Pontal System and the Rio do Peixe Dike were removed. These activities were carried out under the supervision of an independent technical audit and public bodies.
The work on Dike 1A in the Pontal System began in June 2023 and it is due to be completed in December 2024, as is the work on Dike 1B, which began in April of this year.
The company’s tailings disposal structures in the municipality are permanently monitored by its Geotechnical Monitoring Center.
Upstream Dam De-Characterization Program
Since 2019, around R$8.5 billion has been invested in Vale’s De-Characterization Program and 14 of the company’s 30 upstream structures have so far been eliminated in Brazil. The removal of upstream structures is a commitment Vale has made to society, and it has also become a legal obligation.
The solutions are customized for each structure and are being carried out cautiously, always prioritizing people’s safety, risk reduction and care for the environment. The actions implemented for de-characterization are subject to continuous evaluation and monitoring by independent audits and the authorities.

2019Barely 500 metres separates the first houses in the Rio do Peixe neighbourhood of Itabira and the fifth largest mining dam in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais
We have been told it is a matter of seconds
If I could I would leave here immediately,” says Claudinei Ferreira
a 32-year-old mechanic who has lived in this town of 120,000 inhabitants for five years
Located in the region known as the Iron Quadrilateral
Itabira is the birthplace of one of the country’s most famous poets
but also that of the mining company Vale do Rio Doce
Itabira and Vale have become one; 90 per cent of municipal revenues come from mining and our entire economy revolves around Vale,” says the city’s environment secretary
The Brazilian multinational was involved in two serious accidents
and one in the Brumadinho region just two months ago
a stream of mud consisting of mining waste that had burst forth from broken dams belonging directly or indirectly to the company swept away
as well as having a huge environmental impact
The state’s history is bound up with the exploration of mining wealth – to the point that it bears the name “General Mines”
In the 16th and 17th centuries it was gold
then by the end of the 19th century it was iron
Today Minas Gerais produces 60 per cent of the iron extracted in Brazil
but mining is increasingly being criticised for its impact
sending 40 billion litres of waste into the Rio Doce river and killing 19 people
Fear is now a daily fact of life for the people of the region
Itabira is surrounded by no less than 11 dams
with a volume of 227 billion litres of residue water from the mining process [about five times the volume of the first disaster]
I barely close my eyes before I wake up again,” says Rosa Fortunato
which today contains 130 billion litres of mining waste water
The feeling of anxiety is made worse by the lack of safety training
Despite the volume of materials that have been accumulated
the Plano de Ação Emergencial em Barragens de Mineração (Emergency Plan of Action for Mining Dams) for the Vale dams in Itabira was not drawn up until May 2018 and is still in its setting-up phase
“We have never had emergency training here,” says 77-year-old Geraldo Pereira who lives near the Pontal dam
the mining company has only begun to visit each house in the danger zone this month to advise the residents
On 25 January 2019 the Córrego do Feijão mine’s no.1 dam burst for reasons as yet unknown and spilt 13 billion litres of mud
burying nearly 300 people [according to the latest report: 212 deaths confirmed by the Civil Defence and 93 people missing]
“There were lots of warning signs that the dam could soon burst,” says an activist from the Movimento dos Atingidos por Barragens (MAB
or Movement of People Affected by the Dams)
who went to the Córrego do Feijão mine the day after the disaster
and that is why we describe this dam burst as the ‘Vale massacre,’” says the 24-year-old woman
The movement has been campaigning for the nationalisation of all mining activity in Brazil for the last 30 years
so that the wealth that it generates is returned to the Brazilian people
One of the warning signs was the blue tarpaulin partly covering the lower section of the dam for about four months
It was keeping secret the works to reinforce the dam
which even the company’s employees didn’t all know about
among the majority of the victims struck by the tsunami of mud which hit the company’s canteen
The Minas Gerais state prosecutor’s office
which also suspects the dam’s management of criminal negligence
requested on 15 February the preventive detention of eight Vale engineers
responsible for the safety of the dam [Editor’s note: five other employees of Vale and the German company Tüv South
authors of the report that testified to the safety of the dam
were then arrested; they were later released by decision of the Supreme Court]
as well as the seizure of computers and documents from four employees of Tüv South
“Vale’s representatives insist that this is an accident
but the prosecution and the police are now convinced that a crime of intentional homicide has been committed
in which various entities took the risk of causing the death of hundreds of people.”
the mud destroyed part of the towns of Córrego do Feijão and Parque das Cachoeiras
knocked down a 50-metre high railway bridge and contaminated the Paraopeba river
which helps supply the Belo Horizone metropolis
453 residents from four neighbourhoods were evacuated from their homes at 02.00 and have not been allowed to back since then
not even to collect personal belongings and documents
“What annoys us most is that they knew since the day before that the dam was at risk and that we should evacuate; why didn’t they call the residents to warn them and give the time to leave calmly?” asks 39-year-old Maria Aparecida Batista
who has shared a hotel room with her husband and their two sons for the last two weeks
“We want to go home; hotels are fine for holidays,” she says firmly
Vale employees came to feed the pets abandoned in the evacuation
Equal Times gained exclusive access to the isolated danger zone to watch farm animals – pigs
– being taken out at the request of the judicial authorities
others hanging around the houses waiting for their owners
who refuse to return to Socorro even though Vale assures them the dam is now stable
because that kind of thing leaves its mark
and now we don’t believe anything the company says.”
vice-president of the Socorro residents' association
broke her foot that night as she desperately tried to warn her neighbours about the dam burst
nobody knew it was a false alarm; I only knew that I had three minutes to get to the security zone
What do you do in three minutes?” she says
at least 850 people have had to abandon their businesses for fear of another dam burst
Most of them are still unable to return home
In Mid-February 200 residents of Nova Lima received calls from Vale employees warning them of the weakness of the Mar Azul mine’s dam
but I am not going to abandon everything I have built up
If something happens or disappears who will pay?” asks 55-year-old Gilmar Pereira
who lives on the banks of the small Macacos river whose house would be affected as it is in the so-called Zona de autossalvamento (save yourself zone) – a euphemism for the areas which the authorities are not capable of reaching before the arrival of any tsunami of mud
at least eight other mines are at a standstill
while they remain the subject of enquiry or are banned from treating residues
The omnipresent danger limits the alternatives for the people who live in the State
“We have to leave,” says 20-year-old Celos Oliveira
a resident of Córrego do Feijão who has just buried his cousin
swept away by the stream of mud and whose body was only found two weeks later
if everywhere poses a risk?” comments his mother
he replies: “The only solution is to leave Minas Gerias
Here the cycle of gold has given way to a cycle of tragedy”

He was born in the town of Itabira
about which he wrote longingly in later life: "Itabira is just a photograph on the wall
But how it hurts!" Like most provincial writers of his generation
and made a living as a civil servant in the ministry of education
but Minas Gerais was never far from his thoughts
His observations ranged from the mundane to the metaphysical, often combining both, as in one of his most famous poems: "In the middle of the road there was a stone / there was a stone in the middle of the road / there was a stone / in the middle of the road there was a stone." Drummond was also a prolific writer of erotic poetry (most of which was only published posthumously)
and could be slyly irreverent: "The arse
I first came across Drummond because my wife's family comes from Minas Gerais as well. This landlocked Brazilian state has produced many of the country's greatest writers, but the poet towers magnificently over them all
He's included in almost any anthology of the Brazilian poetry and is also well-known for his prose
once claiming that writing journalism was the only thing he did with any pleasure
can't get enough of a writer so popular that his Friendly Poem ("I am working on a song / that will awaken men / and make children sleep") was printed on the country's banknotes in the late 1980s
His instantly recognisable features (long face
oversized eyeglasses) have become iconic and appear not only on the covers of his books but on T-shirts
only a few months after receiving one of the highest accolades Rio de Janeiro has to offer: he was chosen as the theme for the carnival parade by one of the city's leading samba schools
"Poetry is necessary," he once wrote, "but is the poet?" This year's Dia D – a day of readings, discussions and exhibitions inspired by staff at the Moreira Salles Institute – showed how readers remain as loyal to the gentle man from Itabira as they do to his enduring work

Vale brand is built every day by each of us
we tell you a little more about how the trajectory towards the brand we have today was: consolidated and globally recognized
Companhia Vale do Rio Doce was created by the Brazilian government in 1942
With the growing increase in production and export of ore
the company gained notoriety in the market and thus the need to create an image that represented it
Our first brand did not have a defined logo
the company was almost always identified by the acronym 'CVRD'
The first brand representation came in 1967 and was created by Aloísio Magalhães
who developed identifying signs for the company
The exponential growth since the 1970s made the company a synonym for development and
in 1974 an internal contest was launched with the objective of creating a new brand that represented this moment
The winning brand made mention of the flags of Brazil and the state of Minas Gerais
the birthplace of Companhia Vale do Rio Doce
After the privatization of the company in the 1990s and the acquisition of Canadian mining company Inco
CVRD reached a new milestone in its history and
The reasons for the change could be summed up in one word: globalization
It was necessary to think about the next steps towards a future of operations around the world
but that also reinforced the company's Brazilian origin
which makes a direct reference to the first letter of the company name and can represent both a pit and a heart
equipment and other elements that are part of the employees' daily lives
The Espaço Memória (History Center) project was born in 2011
during the production of the book 'Our History' and the medium-length film of the same name that were created to celebrate Vale's 70th anniversary
When deepening the research for the construction of the materials
several documents of historical relevance were discovered scattered in deposits and units of Vale
In view of the importance of the items for Vale and for the narrative of the trajectory of mining in Brazil
the need to save and protect the collection arose
the collection kept at the History Center is divided into two areas
The first is a laboratory that stores items of historical value identified by the team
photo or object is cataloged and carefully analyzed
to determine the appropriate treatment it should receive
from a simple cleaning to a chemical restoration
the items are transferred to the second area
where the materials are sanitized under controlled conditions of temperature and humidity
All this work is carried out by a multidisciplinary team and passionate about what they do
To ensure that the story is told in the right way and can be perpetuated over the years
the professionals responsible for the collection take the time to put together the pieces of the past puzzle and turn loose paragraphs into a beautiful narrative
The Espaço Memória team receives or finds a historical document of the company and makes a complete analysis of the material
date of the item and its relevance to the history of Vale
Learn about the steps in this process that ensure that materials are conserved correctly and can disseminate the history of Vale and mining in Brazil
The pages are separated to be treated one by one
With a cotton “pad” (cotton ball wrapped in fine fabric)
rubbing it in circular movements to remove the surface dirt from the document
without interfering with its color and texture
The rubber dust is removed with the help of a brush (kind of wide paintbrush) and the deepest dirt
such as dust spots or insect faeces that are stuck to the paper
receives a “filling”: Japanese paper is placed at the seam of the two halves and a layer of methylcellulose
not interfering with the color and design of the original document
The sanitized document is packed in polyester envelopes and stored
History is being written in our daily lives
Each event will be a historic event in a short time
we know that we still have a lot of history to tell ahead

President of Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD)
Israel Pinheiro (in a white suit) and delegation visit the Atalaia ore pier at Vitória Port (ES)
Bartolomeo has 10 years of experience in the company
having already held the position of Executive Director of Logistics
Integrated Operations of Bulk Commodities and Executive Director of Basic Metals in Canada
he idealized the Vale Production System (VPS)
together with investment in technology and training of people
the Center of Excellence in Logistics was also created
dedicated to the training of port and railroad professionals
the executive worked at Ambev between 1994 and 2003
He also has experience as CEO and director at other companies
Fabio Schvartsman took office as Vale's president in 2017 and remained until 2019
The production engineer is graduated and post-graduated in production engineering by the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo and had previously headed companies such as Duratex and Klabin
Fabio assumed the position with the main objective of leading the group's corporate reorganization
with the purpose of allocating the shares in a portfolio of common shares facing the Novo Mercado
Until reaching the highest position in Vale in 2011
Ferreira accumulated almost 30 years of experience in the sector
as director of Vale do Rio Doce Alumínio (Aluvale)
he held several command positions until he became the president of Vale Inco
he has prioritized the responsible execution of the company's investments
the training of employees and initiatives aimed at valuing life
When Roger Agnelli took over the Vale presidency in 2001
having served on the executive board of Banco Bradesco - the youngest to achieve this feat
Agnelli bet on acquisitions of mines and companies abroad - an example was the purchase of Canadian Inco
This made Vale jump from fourth to second place in the global mining market
in addition to increasing the company's profit by more than R$ 25 billion
a program of 10 principles in the areas of environment
the brand also changed in 2007: from then on
"It is necessary to constantly reinvent yourself," said Jório in an interview
This is what he did throughout his life: in addition to being a diplomat
Dauster is also a well-known name in literary translation
responsible for translating works of great names into Portuguese
he became president and had as his main feat the restructuring of the company after privatization
in addition to preparing the way for the expansion that would come in the following years
Francisco José Schettino was at the head of Vale in the period before the privatization of the company
The engineer was installed shortly after the closing of Rio-92 (United Nations Conference on Environment and Development)
which focused on investing in environmental preservation policies and refitting Vale's logistics
such as the new Ponta da Madeira Maritime Terminal
He also participated in the transition after privatization
with a position on Vale's Board of Directors
Wilson Brumer was sworn in as president of Companhia Vale do Rio Doce in 1990
Brumer took office with the mission of promoting
an administrative reform that would prepare Vale for future privatization
Among the highlights of its operations are the strengthening of its presence in the stock market and the return on investments to Itabira
Graduated from the Rural University of the State of Minas Gerais (now the Federal University of Viçosa)
Viana became special advisor to the presidency of CVRD
accumulating the functions of chairman of the Board of Directors of Docenave
Vale eliminated the use of charcoal from native forests and achieved self-sufficiency in the material from planted forests
Eliezer Batista was the first career employee to occupy the job position within CVRD - which occurred at two different times in the Company's history
the engineer is referred to as one of the most important names for the company
which is easily explained by the spectacular growth that would have occurred since the 1980s
In his first stint in office (1962 - 1964)
Eliezer was the creator of a large-scale and long-term ore trading strategy with Japanese steelmakers
which led him to idealize the Tubarão Maritime Terminal in Espírito Santo
he participated in the implementation of the Ferro Carajás Project
which was decisive in transforming CVRD into the largest iron ore mining company in the world
Paulo Vieira already had experience as president
since he held the job position at Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional before being sworn in as president of Vale in 1964
the country was going through a military coup that removed João Goulart from the presidency and
managerial functions - especially those linked to state-owned companies - were fundamental to the new government's strategies
His management was marked by the consolidation of the first ore sale contract to Japan - previously signed
He also continued the works at the port of Tubarão and kept the commitments made to the mining companies Samitri and Ferteco
which needed the Costa Lacerda-Fábrica railway link to export their product
Vieira stepped down because of political disagreements
Oscar de Oliveira was already an employee of CVRD when he took office in 1965
The greatest mark of his administration was the inauguration
still during the government of João Goulart and with Eliezer Batista as president of Vale
began to prepare for more conquests in the international market
He left the presidency of CVRD in March 1967
Antônio Dias was appointed president of CVRD in 1967
His management at the head of the Company was marked by the incentive to the export sector: he sought direct contact with consumer industries
which made possible the joint construction of ore pelletizing plants
Vale's first pelletizing plant was opened in Tubarão
with a production capacity of 2 million tons / year
Leite left the direction of the Company to take over the Ministry of Mines and Energy
Mascarenhas joined the company in 1957 and was the second CVRD employee to occupy the highest job position in the company
CVRD's exports went from 11,550 million tons shipped in 1968 to 16,056 million
This increase in sales was also linked to the appearance of the new export product: pig iron produced in Minas Gerais
Vale became the world's largest iron ore exporter
holding 16% of the transoceanic ore market
Raymundo left the company to take over the management of another company
He returned to Companhia Vale do Rio Doce the following year as commercial director
Fernando Roquete Reis was installed at the beginning of the presidential term of General Ernesto Geisel
Mining in Brazil was going through a series of strategic changes
with an emphasis on diversification and business abroad
Reis participated in the legal battle that involved Vale and United States Steel (partners in Amazônia Mineração SA) for control over the exploration of the largest ore reserve in the world
are also the start of the Carajás project and investments in the phosphate line - with Valep and Valefértil
Joel Rennó was already close to Brazil's mineral policy when he took office as president in 1978: he was an advisor for Strategic Affairs to the Minister of Mines and Energy at the time
he prioritized the construction of the Carajás Railway
which would take the ore from Pará to the port in São Luís
He was also responsible for the elaboration and assembly of the new mine-railroad-port complex
which fulfilled a fundamental role for the development of the region and for the success of the business
Rennó left office in 1979 and was later president of Petrobras
Francisco de Sá Lessa held the position of president
with a postgraduate degree in Industrial Chemistry from the Polytechnic School of Rio de Janeiro
and his training was reflected in his management profile
Lessa directed the sales and ores commission
which was directed to the study on the increase of the production
transport and export capacity of Itabira iron ore and the placing of this ore in international consumer markets
Vale was already relevant in the international market
Juracy Magalhães was a political figure of great importance
especially for the Northeast region of the country
at the personal invitation of the then president Getúlio Vargas
he accepted the position of president at Vale - where he remained until 1952
it implemented new methods of human resource management and became known for demanding strict punctuality from employees
Its railway projects were also decisive for the expansion and efficiency of the Vitória-Minas Railway
he pursued his political career and was also Brazil's ambassador to the United States
he was Minister of Justice and Foreign Affairs
Demerval Pimenta was the second president of Vale
the administrator formed by the Escola de Minas de Ouro Preto was responsible for leveraging the company's export in a post-World War II scenario and continuing with the work of implementing CVRD
Before officially joining the staff of Companhia Vale do Rio Doce
He participated in the negotiations on the Washington Accords - signed between Brazil
England and the USA - which resulted in the birth of the company in 1942
he returned to dedicate himself to politics: he was the first mayor of Brasília and governed Minas Gerais between 1966 and 1971

Brazilian mining company Vale has started decommissioning the first of five upstream tailings dams to be eliminated this year; they will be reintegrated into the environment to prevent dam collapse
Vale began work to demolish dyke 4 of the Pontal iron ore dam in the Brazilian municipality of Itabira on 7 February
Vale has removed seven upstream structures - four in Minas Gerais and three in Pará - as part of its dam de-characterisation programme
which involves removing a dam’s structures after which it ceases to exist
An upstream structure is a geotechnical structure built from the thick tailings deposited in the reservoir
the company expects to remove dykes 3 and 4 of the Pontal System and Ipoema dam in Itabira
and the auxillary dyke of dam 5 in Nova Lima
Vale has mapped a total of 30 dams that need to be de-characterised; by the end of 2022
the company expects that 40% of these structures will be demolished
To de-characterise dyke 4 Vale will remove its retaining tailings
and will reintegrate it back into the environment
The tailings removed will be sent to a prepared area within the Pontal dam area
Dyke 4 has not received tailings since 2014 and is at emergency level 1; the structure holds around 3.7M.m3 of tailings
a reinforcement was built in January to give greater stability to the structure
Following the collapse of the Vale-owned Córrego do Feijão tailings dam in Brumadinho in 2019
the company says it has undergone a cultural transformation process which has put a greater focus on demolishing upstream dams
In line with international best practices for dam management
corrective and monitoring actions in its structures
Vale aims to have no dam in critical condition by 2025
These actions are also intended to increase the safety of the upstream structures slated for removal until the preparatory and engineering steps for de-characterisation are completed
Dyke 4 and the company's other geotechnical structures in Itabira are permanently monitored by the Geotechnical Monitoring Center (CMG)
The entire process is monitored by Brazil's regulatory bodies and by the technical audit of the Public Prosecutor's Office

Guide dogs travel for free, alongside their owner and under their control, in the front row. Guide dogs must be equipped with a harness, though a muzzle is not necessary. They must have an ID card and ID tag issued by a guide dog training center or independent instructor, containing the following information:
- Up-to-date vaccination card, proving that a multi-vaccine and anti-rabies vaccine have been administered, signed by a registered vet.
- The dog’s equipment, consisting of a collar, leash and harness with a strap.
- The ID tag must be worn around the guide dog’s neck.
To find out what times passenger trains will pass through your local station, Vale runs an exclusive passenger train helpline: 0800 285 7000. Select your nearest station and buy your ticket now, which will allow you to enjoy beautiful landscapes and experience new stories.
Passengers should arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time to avoid any problems.
When not accompanied by a parent or guardian, minors may only embark if they present authorization from the Child and Youth Protection Court. Only original documents or authenticated copies will be accepted.
Children up to five years of age travel for free, but they must sit on their parent or legal guardian’s lap. Children aged six and older pay the full fare.
You can take a baby in a car seat onto the train with you, provided it fits on a train seat. In this case, as the baby won’t be transported on your lap, you need to buy a ticket for them.
In line with ANTT resolutions 4,308 of 2014 and 5,974 of 2022, as of November 24, 2015, it is mandatory to issue a ticket for children aged up to five years who are sitting on the lap of their parent or guardian. The aim is to identify all passengers who board the train. This ticket is free of charge!
The Elderly People’s Statute mandates the provision of two free seats per train, in economy class, reserved for passengers aged 60 or over (and whose income is no more than two minimum salaries). If these seats have already been taken, eligible passengers can buy their ticket at a 50% discount (valid only for interstate journeys and in economy class). ID and proof of income must be presented.
The following documents are accepted as proof of income, as established in Decree 9,921 of 2019:
I – Work and Social Security Card, containing up-to-date annotations;
II – Pay slip or another document issued by employer;
III – Proof of contributions to National Social Security Institute (INSS);
IV – Benefit payment statement or declaration issued by INSS or another public or private sector pension scheme (only valid up to 90 days after date of issue);
V – Document or card issued by state or municipal social welfare secretariat or a similar institution.
The trains have a dining car and buffet car. There is also a food and drink trolley service. In the dining car, you can order items from the onboard menu.
You can order a meal from a trolley service attendant directly from your seat, but you may choose to eat it in the dining car once you receive it, if you prefer.
