The project for the new Itapevi Centre, operating since July 2021 near São Paulo, is further confirmation of Leonardo's commitment to the Latin American region, where the company has been present for more than 50 years.
Today there are 400 helicopters operating in the regioni in addition to aircraft, 70 naval systems are in use, along with the ATOS mission system and geo-spatial detection solutions.
With 190 helicopters engaged in various missions, in the Brazilian territory, the efficiency of fleet support and proximity to operators takes on a strategic importance. The new Logistics Support Centre, located on an area of 80,000 square metres, of which 6,000 square metres for buildings and infrastructure, now offers an excellent service, with innovative resources and infrastructure.
6.000 square metres for buildings and infrastructures
Andrea Puglisi, CEO of Leonardo Do Brasil LTDA, talks about the news Centre of Itapevi, its activities and the future projects in the pipeline in the future.
The new Service and Logistics Centre of Itapevi started its activities in July 2021: can you tell us about this first period of operation?
How many helicopters have you hosted so far and what kind of services have you provided?
In recent years, the helicopter fleet in the region has grown. This has been helped by the introduction of new models, for VIP, security, public service and offshore transport missions. How do you meet the demanding needs of the operators?
Since the opening of the Centre, has the perception of the level of service quality by helicopter operators in the region changed?
Do you have in plan to further expand the Centre capabilities in the future?
Yes, we do. The service capacity of the Centre can be expanded by up to 50% compared to the previous dedicated site. The facility has been built on a wide area that can accommodate further expansion, either more space for maintenance services of airframes and components, or possibly, a training Centre with a modern simulation device. We also have in plan to restyle our VIP lounge for pilots with the Agusta brand.

The report presents an overview of records of violence between 2006 and 2017 in Brazil
Researchers also analysed the impact of violence on social development and on public services
in 2016 murder was the main cause of death among male youths and represented 50.3% of deaths in this group
“The profile of murder victims in this country is already well known – young Black men living in underprivileged neighbourhoods on the outskirts of cities
This reflects the structural racism we have in Brazil
are seen as a threat by society and as people who
should be eradicated.” Said Rafael Custódio
Coordinator of the Conectas Institutional Violence Programme
“One element that explains this scenario is the war on drugs which has proved to be inefficient and disproportionately violent
If we want to reduce the number of deaths in this country the drug policy needs to be reformed.” Custódio added
The numbers presented also indicate a sharp rise in murder rates in the North and North-Eastern states of the country
with an increase of over 250% in Rio Grande do Norte in the period in question
Furthermore the report reveals an increase in the deaths of women and highlights the fact that a large number of the 4,645 deaths recorded in 2016 could have been avoided by implementing public policies to address and fight violence against women
A further piece of data that stands out is the 90% increase in reports of cases of rape between 2011 and 2016 when 22,918 incidents were recorded
Nevertheless this is the most underreported type of crime and true numbers may reach as much as a staggering 300 cases each year

Brazil. The Itapevi Basque club celebrated its first Basque week from September 2-4
in hopes of calling attention to the Basque culture and its presence in Sao Paulo. The attorney Ana Luiza Etxaluz visited on this occasions and presented her book The Basque Soul to those in attendance. In this work
narrates the process of discovering her origins as well as offering information on the Basque Country and its culture
but there are many Basque-Brazilians that are not aware of their Basque roots
and maybe the only one written in Portuguese
Stemming from her book and the numerous interviews that she has done with local media
many people have contacted her to inquire about their genealogy
to the extent that she is behind the creation of an euskal etxea in the city where she resides
Porto Alegre. She is also counting on the advice and support of the Brazilian Basque club of Itapevi during this venture
In an interview conducted at the beginning of the year with journalist Joxean Agirre, from Gara (the full interview in Basque here)
Etchaluz talks about the process of the creation of the book: “I knew from a very young age that my father’s last name was Basque
but we didn’t have much information about the Basque Country. There are many people of Basque origin in the south of Brazil
most of which have come from Uruguay and Argentina. One of my father’s sisters talked a lot about our origin and my father imagined many times how the Etchaluz family must have come to Porto Alegre
but he didn’t have any records.” The family contacted some cousins in Buenos Aires
but we couldn’t continue the line through them.
With the collaboration of Etxaluz, Ana Luiza was able to construct her family’s tree and since then has visited Bayonne and the Basque Country on several occasions. Her adventure that she relates in The Basque Soul now serves as a stimulus for other Basque-Brazilians eager to deepen their knowledge of their families’ origins.

Latin America’s premier executive air transport exhibition LABACE (Annual Latin America Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition) is back this year in São Paolo
enabling Leonardo to provide an update to the regional helicopter market on what’s next with its VIP/corporate transport offer under the new Agusta VIP brand
LABACE marks the introduction of the new Agusta brand with its initial range of dedicated services during a significant aviation exhibition in this important region
With a global fleet of more than 900 helicopters carrying out a range of passenger transport missions
scheduled services and VIP/Government transport
approximately 25% of them are based in Latin America
Leonardo has retained a leading 45% share of the world’s multi-engine VIP helicopter market over the last decade
and is the benchmark in Brazil in this sector
leveraging key differentiators which have made its dedicated model range the standard: top class speed and overall performance
The new Agusta brand updates the distinctive factors that made the company famous and popular among global and regional operators
adding more solutions and services as technology evolves further
The first example of combining heritage and innovation was presented with the all-new rotorcraft terminal designated Casa Agusta – jointly with Falcon Aviation – in Dubai in late 2021
the innovative AW609 tiltrotor was also exhibited
a solution that is transforming the world of rotary-wing transport
facilitating connections to urban centers and bringing private airport transport services to cities due to a fully operational terminal
Leonardo is providing an update on latest plans for new options and services dedicated to VIP/corporate helicopter operators under the Agusta brand initiative
a new integrated maintenance service plan and a dedicated Agusta section in the Leonardo Helicopter Customer Portal
consist of three all new different options – inspired by the names of iconic cities – for interior layouts based on stylish specific colors
These are intended to allow customers to select and create their ideal and perfect habitat which can best mirror their tastes
while and meet their needs: from the sense of warmth
harmony and pureness of ‘Florence’
to the coexistence of opposites in ‘London’ like tradition and innovation
and the energy and passion shown by ‘New York’ and its cosmopolitan cross-fertilization of habits and behaviors
The new AGUSTA for YOU helicopter service plan specifically developed for operators of corporate rotorcraft
is intended to enhance aircraft availability
reduce inventory costs and optimize expenses and covers scheduled and unscheduled maintenance of airframe/avionics components and other items
Types initially supported include AW109 GrandNew
AW169 and AW139 with the plan to extend it to other platforms in the future
on the Leonardo Helicopter Customer Portal
VIP operators will have a dedicated area to verify the progress and status of their helicopter manufacturing and testing
these steps are aimed at delivering more distinct answers to meet exclusivity requirements and make the ownership and operations from day 1 a true 360° experience when choosing Agusta
Leonardo VIP helicopters also feature a range of technologies supporting safety
Leonardo is exhibiting an AW169 light intermediate helicopter on static display at LABACE
The only latest generation helicopter in its category in over 30 years
typically not available on light multiengine models with substantial benefits also for passenger transport duties
Cockpit and cabin comfort for crews and passengers on board are supported by an APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) Mode capability
allowing key systems like air conditioning
heating and radio working by leveraging power generated by one of the two engines
This contributes to an ideal environment and use of on-board equipment
with no need to keep the rotors running translating in greater safety
less noise and lower fuel consumption and emissions
The AW169 is available with three undercarriage options: retractable or fix landing gear and skids
The retractable landing gear option is fully electrical thus reducing weight and easing maintenance while reducing its cost
The modern digital glass cockpit features touch screen technology and a versatile representation of all key information
therefore delivering greater situational awareness to the pilot and reducing workload to concentrate on the mission and increase safety
Over the last year Leonardo also took a further step forward to strengthen the level of quality services supporting helicopter operators in Brazil and Latin America with its all-new Service and Logistics Centre headquartered in Itapevi

with significant benefits also for VIP operators
The missions that are carried out by Leonardo helicopters across the region include VIP/corporate and VVIP transport offshore transport
