anticipates a persimmon harvest of approximately 5.2 thousand tons this season
The Municipal Secretariat of Environment and Agriculture confirms no major setbacks from fruit abortion or hailstorms
manages three hectares of persimmons across multiple properties
"This year the production is better than last
but they are beautiful and very sweet." In Itatiba
over 70 producers cultivate around 160 hectares
preferred for its climate adaptability and ease of management
splits his cultivation between 300 Rama Forte trees and 250 Fuyu trees
the latter valued for better post-harvest conservation
"Fuyu is harvested firm and goes straight to consumption
Current producer prices are about $0.57 per kilo
a rise from the $0.19 to $0.29 range in 2023
Manual and selective harvesting remain prevalent
with pruning occurring between June and August to induce budding
Itatiba's proximity to consumer hubs like Campinas and São Paulo aids in market access
with some producers also venturing into rural tourism
diversifies income by creating persimmon-based products
He remarks on an unexpected yield improvement
"I left more branches on the trees because the orchard was still recovering from a hailstorm two years ago
but it produced a lot of good quality fruit."

In a lush corner of Itatiba, Brazil, Felipe Hess Arquitetos chooses to lean into the complex terrain rather than smooth it over, with its Patios House. The weekend residence in São Paulo’s countryside skips the mountain-top statement and opts instead for near invisibility
the architecture is less a megaphone and more a whisper that responds to the terrain
The Patios House isn’t perched atop its site — it’s planted
The one-story home wraps around a central landscaped courtyard
with the main volume slipping between boulders like it was always meant to be there
Felipe Hess achieves a lightness by partially burying sections of the house into the sloped site
The result is a residence that feels more like an extension of the landscape than a disruption of it
where vegetation flows fluidly from indoors to out
and the structure seems to exhale into the scenery

The spatial organization of the Patios House by Felipe Hess Arquitetos is as considered as its siting. Private spaces — bedrooms and quieter zones — are positioned by the architects at the back of the home
shielded by elegant wooden sunshades that allow filtered light inside while maintaining privacy from neighbors
These screens modulate sunlight and create a gentle dialogue with the rear courtyard
social areas orbit the central garden patio
giving the home a dual character: introverted in some places
The movement between these sunlit zones unfolds slowly and intentionally
Felipe Hess Arquitetos designs the Patios House as a discreet weekend retreat in Itatiba
The material palette which shapes the Patios House reinforces Felipe Hess Arquitetos’s ethos of architectural humility
no ornamentation — just honesty in form and finish
Textures and tones are kept quiet so that the surrounding geology can speak louder
The house adopts the posture of a guest on the land: restrained
with subtle geometries that nod to the natural contours of the site rather than override them
the Patios House is an exercise in coexistence
By embracing rather than erasing the site’s original features
especially the giant stones that once posed a design challenge
the house turns its constraints into compositional elements
drawing light and air through every corner
while the courtyard becomes both heart and hinge
A place where contemporary living is not carved into nature but grown with it
the home is partially buried to reduce its visual impact and connect it with the landscape
the Patios House is embedded into a sloped site dotted with large natural boulders
movement between the sunlit home unfolds slowly and intentionally
indoor and outdoor spaces flow together to create a continuous experience with the garden
the one-story residence is organized around a central landscaped courtyard
bringing light and air into the surrounding rooms
the house adopts the posture of a guest on the land: restrained and respectful

happening now! partnering with antonio citterio, AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function, but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style, context, and personal expression.
the Fazenda da Grama Residence takes advantage of the uneven topography to arrange the lives of the residents in a countryside oasis
diluting the limits between intern and extern spaces
A combination of striking lines and overlapping volumes – sometimes aligned
composed of zenithal openings and transparency
allows strategic framings of the landscape and creates unique relations between inside and outside
instigating the curiosity of those who lives there
guests and services) spreads over three levels and 1300 sqm
the Fazenda da Grama Residence was designed following the premise of family's private life protection and an inviting appearance without giving up on its predominant horizontality
On the lower level are the service and social accesses
an extensive staircase leads to the intermediate level
where house’s main attractions are concentrated – the social block
with a multifunctional room connected to the patio with grass and swimming pool
a pergola shades the path and connects to the marquee
crossing the volume and connecting all sectors
isolated from other uses and with guaranteed privacy
Transitional paths are very well worked out
providing different space experiences; from the route traced by the user
And it is precisely the functional and efficient design that results in the versatility of uses and calibrate privacy levels. The landscape design by Renata Tilli and Juliana do Val (Gaia Projetos) reinforces the integration with nature
since the house seems to delicately rest on a pre-existing garden
a fishpond and organic lines pulverizes the limits between interior and exterior to the point of rising the question: are we inside or outside the house
vegetations is also applied as physical and visual barrier
positioned laterally to the social sector and closing off the pool area
The choice of light tones and nature derived materials dialogues directly with the initiative of harmoniously blend house and landscape
The stone that covers the exterior also enters the house and wraps around the walls
blurring the definition of beginning and ending of spaces; the same goes for the woody ceiling
another element that refers to the surrounding vegetation and brings warmth up the spaces
the metallic elements on the marquee bring lightness and contemporaneity to the house
“The goal was to create a harmonic decoration
combining architecture design and client’s needs”
To meet the family's desire for a cozy and relaxed environment
wood was widely used in furniture such as the bookshelf
in contrast to the neutrality of the tiled floor and stone walls.Earthy and warm tones are present throughout the decoration and add layers of complexity to the project
It is possible to notice the subtle variation of colors in carpets
which reinforces the sensation of a continuous gradient
the family achieved their dream of having an antique piano prominently featured in the generous social area
spacious tables that comfortably accommodate guests for the long and lively lunches organized by the family. As the sun sets
the luminaires work to reinforce the much-desired cozy atmosphere in different environments
"We managed to achieve synergy between the architectural project
the interior decoration and the clients' desires
which reveal the intense connection with the house where they return on the weekends in order to enjoy intense contact with nature and reinforce the bonds of family coexistence"

BILLINGS — The Professional Bull Riders' Unleash The Beast series is ready to buck at MetraPark for the 28th consecutive year
will be held Friday through Sunday at First Interstate Arena
Saturday's second round begins at 6:45 and Sunday's final-day event starts at 1:45
Among the weekend's expected competitors — according to the daysheet posted on the PBR's website — is Brazilian rookie Cassio Dias
Dias recorded his eighth 90-point ride of the season last Sunday to win the First Premier Bank PBR Sioux Falls event
It was Dias' sixth victory of the 2024 UTB season as he continues what is being considered the best rookie campaign of all time
Others expected to compete include another rookie
2022 PBR world champion Daylon Swearingen of Piffard
as is 2018 world champ Kaique Pacheco of Itatiba
Dias leads Crimber by 580.5 points in the standings with just four regular-season events remaining before the PBR World Finals beginning May 9 in Fort Worth
Volborg bull rider Jess Lockwood is not expected to compete
is yet to ride on the Unleash The Beast circuit this season
Browning's Dakota Louis has been competing this year on the PBR's Velocity tour
The June 2024 commissioning of the expanded and upgraded wastewater treatment plant in Itatiba
provided the city with a much-needed increase in sewage treatment capacity
The Penetron System of crystalline waterproofing products was specified to permanently protect the plant's concrete structures from the aggressive environment of the treatment tanks
Itatiba is situated 80 km (50 miles) north of São Paulo and offers popular outdoor attractions
the self-healing capabilities of Penetron technology ensures current and future hairline cracks in the concrete will seal automatically when exposed to water
The recent completion of a major upgrade of Itatiba's municipal wastewater treatment plant enabled SABESP
Brazil's largest water and waste management company
to meet the latest environmental guidelines and to increase treatment capacity by 500 liters/second
Because Itatiba's concrete structures – the wastewater treatment plant's concrete treatment tanks – are exposed to chlorides
and an array of corrosive compounds and various chemicals added during the plant's treatment processes
the project engineers at Stemag Engenharia required a particularly durable waterproofing solution for the expanded and upgraded facility
also the general contractor for this project
to waterproof all concrete structures exposed to groundwater from below and effluent in the tanks above," says Cláudio Neves Ourives
CEO and Managing Partner of Penetron Brazil
Once applied to the surface of the concrete structure
the active ingredients in PENETRON penetrate deep into the concrete matrix to generate a non-soluble crystalline formation throughout the concrete
This crystal formation permanently seals microcracks
pores and capillaries against the penetration of water or liquids from any direction
"The Penetron System provides concrete with long-term protection from deterioration caused by carbonation
ultimately preventing corrosion of the embedded reinforcing steel
even under the harsh conditions of a wastewater treatment plant," concludes Cláudio Neves Ourives
As a result of the Penetron waterproofing and protection solution
waterproofing-related maintenance or treatment will be virtually eliminated at Itatiba."

Workshop brought together Brazilian and American experts to discuss new opportunities for collaborative research in the face of increasing volumes of information
By José Tadeu Arantes | Agência FAPESP – With the expansion of cyber threats, the protection of digital infrastructures has become a major global challenge. In this context, Brazilian and American researchers met in an immersive workshop to discuss advances in cybersecurity and seek scientific collaborations. The event, “NSF-FAPESP Workshop on Cybersecurity and Privacy,” promoted by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and FAPESP
focused on three main areas: network security; artificial intelligence and security; and information ecosystem
“Network security is a consolidated field, but it faces growing challenges with the increase in the volume of information and the emergence of new technologies, such as 5G networks, quantum communication and the rise of artificial intelligence,” says Marcos Simplício
professor at the Engineering School of the University of São Paulo (POLI-USP) and coordinator of the event
Simplício points out that encryption protocols
and intrusion detection and prevention systems are fundamental to ensuring the reliability of digital infrastructures
It is worth remembering that firewalls are security devices that control traffic in and out of networks or computers
“The zero trust approach has been gaining ground because it’s based on the principle that no entity should be trusted as a matter of principle
regardless of its location in the network,” the researcher comments
The goal of the workshop was to foster connections between Brazilian and American researchers
and to create opportunities for collaborative research capable of producing innovations and making a difference in their respective fields
executive director of the Harris Institute for Assured Information (HIAI) at Florida Tech (Florida Institute of Technology) and co-organizer of the workshop
The event brought together 28 Brazilian researchers and 26 U.S
they selected eight or nine collaborative research proposals with their respective teams to submit to the NSF and FAPESP
Still on the subject of artificial intelligence
Carvalho adds that the principles being used are not new
What has exploded is the processing power to do the matrix calculations required for this type of application
And what made this possible was the gaming industry
which created processors that could do the tasks required
So models that would’ve been limited to very specific applications are being popularized for anyone
It’s very good because the more people use it
the more artificial intelligence improves and the more it helps people solve problems
Much of what we do today is already being mediated to some extent by AI
What researchers are doing is basically monitoring this process and adjusting the capabilities of artificial intelligence to get the best out of its use,” Carvalho explains
Another major cybersecurity challenge is the emergence of quantum computers
quantum computers can break most current encryption systems due to their ability to perform calculations exponentially faster than classical computers
“The field of cryptography is going through a phase of transition to new methods
because of the advent of quantum computers
So the community is already working hard on a new generation of algorithms
which should make up the so-called post-quantum cryptography,” Dahab points out
Brazil has the intellectual capacity to take off in cybersecurity
the main cybersecurity research centers in Brazil today are USP and UNICAMP
with relevant work in network security and cryptography
as well as the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) and the Center for Advanced Studies and Systems of Recife (CESAR)
which focus on malware (malicious software created to infect
damage or gain unauthorized access to devices and networks) and cyber-attacks
“Initiatives such as the National Data Protection Authority [ANPD]
the National Cyber Defense Committee [CNDCyber] and the Hackers do Bem program are examples of positive cybersecurity actions taking place in Brazil
One of the major challenges is to guarantee the privacy of users while at the same time enabling the investigation and prevention of cybercrime,” says Simplício

Wild cats — from the small jaguarundi to the large jaguar — are elusive animals
Researchers from Brazil and Portugal took measurements of front and hind footprints of several captive individuals of four wild cat species found in Brazilian rainforests — jaguarundi (Puma yagouaroundi)
and margay (Leopardus wiedii) — and compared them to those of domestic cats
the team found that size and shape of footprints of all the wild cat species as well as the domestic cats were similar
“From our data it was impossible to distinguish small felids based on footprint total size and pad size
and configuration as well,” the researchers write in the paper
“This limitation is enhanced in field studies because it is impossible to distinguish between front and hind footprints in such conditions.”
similarity of footprints between the different cat species could pose a problem for researchers conducting surveys in areas that have both wild
“Wildlife biologists using only footprints to confirm species presence in such environments should be aware of this bias and adapt their sampling strategy to minimize it.”
and it leaves behind larger front and hind footprints
The researchers speculate that this could be why the ocelot was the only wild cat species in their study that they could accurately distinguish from the other species based on footprint measurements alone
this identification is only accurate if the study area is not inhabited by jaguars or pumas
whose juveniles may have footprints with measurements that overlap those of the ocelot in our study,” they warn
So using only footprints to identify species could be prone to errors
the researchers suggest that animal surveys should incorporate multiple methods
in surveys or monitoring studies including felids
footprint detection should be used in association with camera-trapping (together with sand plots or in the same track as footprint surveys)
scat collection and identification using molecular ecology techniques and face- to-face interviews with local people reporting visual observation of species or hunting activities.”

Researchers say some can be used to develop pigments and biodetergents
By André Julião | Agência FAPESP – Only well-adapted organisms can survive constant exposure to sunlight and temperature fluctuations during the day, not to mention scarcity of water. Researchers supported by FAPESP identified a group of bacteria and a yeast that have adapted to such conditions on photovoltaic panels
The panels are installed in Sorocaba and Itatiba
An article reporting the results of the research is published in the Editor’s Choice section of FEMS Microbiology Letters
an official journal of the Federation of European Microbiology Societies
the microorganisms identified have significant potential to be developed into products that entail long periods of exposure to sunlight
such as sunscreens and pigments for processed foods
as well as more efficient detergents with antimicrobial action for cleaning the panels themselves
“We concluded that the composition of this microbiota is very similar to that found on photovoltaic panels in Valencia [Spain]
and even in the Arctic and Antarctic,” said Juliane Moura
who conducted the study as part of her master’s research for the Program of Graduate Studies in Biotechnology and Environmental Monitoring (PPGBMA) at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) in Sorocaba
with a scholarship from the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES)
“Although the countries studied have different climates, the surface of panels in all of them is home to a community of microorganisms that have adapted to solar radiation, temperature fluctuation, water scarcity, and the very material the panels are made of,” said Iolanda Duarte
a professor in the Department of Biology at UFSCar’s Center for Human and Biological Sciences (CCHB) and last author of the article
The samples were collected by scrubbing the panels located in Sorocaba and Itatiba with gauze bandage soaked in sterile saline
They were then stored in flasks and shipped to UFSCar’s Applied Microbiology Laboratory
the researchers identified similar compositions in all the samples
although diversity was slightly higher in the samples collected in the rural area of Sorocaba
16S rRNA gene sequencing is commonly used for identification
classification and quantitation of microbes within complex biological mixtures such as environmental samples (e.g
The results were similar to those of studies conducted in Spain
the Arctic and Antarctic despite the differences in geography and climate
The bacterial genera Methylobacterium methylorubrum and Hymenobacter accounted for over 90% of the total microbial diversity observed
Understanding communities of microorganisms on photovoltaic panels can also help maintain the panels’ efficiency over time
studies show that soiling (accumulated dust and microorganisms) can reduce power production by 11% after 18 months
exceeding 50% when extreme weather events such as sand and dust storms occur
the dust found on the panels is rich in microorganisms
some bacteria cluster in biofilms that line the panels and reduce their capacity to capture solar radiation
the researchers isolated a pigmented yeast that is found on solar panels in regions with a cold climate and can be used to produce biodetergents
These molecules are considered versatile in terms of applications
meaning they reduce surface tension in water to help it blend with water-insoluble substances
They also have potential applications as anti-microbials
and in bioremediation processes to clean up 8soil and groundwater contaminated by discharged chemicals
“Biofilm removal is difficult in many economic activities
so the study is an important contribution to the development of novel solar panel management strategies,” Duarte said
“Future research involving the biodetergent yeast could offer an alternative route for the formulation of more effective cleaning products for solar panels and other equipment.”
Organisms that can withstand and even thrive in conditions such as those found on photovoltaic panels are known as extremophiles
Some of the bacteria identified in Sorocaba and Itatiba
had previously been detected in soil samples from the Taklamaken
Some of the isolates were of particular interest to the researchers because they were pigmented and grew in different temperature bands ranging from 3 °C to 50 °C
The presence of pigment may be associated with the capacity to surmount oxidative stress
when excessive production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species is harmful to biological organisms
Solar radiation and water loss are among the causes of oxidative stress
Photovoltaic panels have a smooth and sloping surface designed not to retain water
The researchers isolated 63 microorganisms with the potential to withstand ultraviolet rays
These will be analyzed in the laboratory to discover their actual resistance to UV and explore possible biotech applications
