In Itatiba over 70 producers cultivate around 160 hectares preferred for its climate adaptability and ease of management splits his cultivation between 300 Rama Forte trees and 250 Fuyu trees the latter valued for better post-harvest conservation "Fuyu is harvested firm and goes straight to consumption Current producer prices are about $0.57 per kilo a rise from the $0.19 to $0.29 range in 2023 Manual and selective harvesting remain prevalent with pruning occurring between June and August to induce budding Itatiba's proximity to consumer hubs like Campinas and São Paulo aids in market access with some producers also venturing into rural tourism diversifies income by creating persimmon-based products He remarks on an unexpected yield improvement "I left more branches on the trees because the orchard was still recovering from a hailstorm two years ago but it produced a lot of good quality fruit." The weekend residence in São Paulo’s countryside skips the mountain-top statement and opts instead for near invisibility the architecture is less a megaphone and more a whisper that responds to the terrain The Patios House isn’t perched atop its site — it’s planted The one-story home wraps around a central landscaped courtyard with the main volume slipping between boulders like it was always meant to be there Felipe Hess achieves a lightness by partially burying sections of the house into the sloped site The result is a residence that feels more like an extension of the landscape than a disruption of it where vegetation flows fluidly from indoors to out and the structure seems to exhale into the scenery images © Fran Parente The spatial organization of the Patios House by Felipe Hess Arquitetos is as considered as its siting. Private spaces — bedrooms and quieter zones — are positioned by the architects at the back of the home shielded by elegant wooden sunshades that allow filtered light inside while maintaining privacy from neighbors These screens modulate sunlight and create a gentle dialogue with the rear courtyard social areas orbit the central garden patio giving the home a dual character: introverted in some places The movement between these sunlit zones unfolds slowly and intentionally Felipe Hess Arquitetos designs the Patios House as a discreet weekend retreat in Itatiba The material palette which shapes the Patios House reinforces Felipe Hess Arquitetos’s ethos of architectural humility no ornamentation — just honesty in form and finish Textures and tones are kept quiet so that the surrounding geology can speak louder The house adopts the posture of a guest on the land: restrained with subtle geometries that nod to the natural contours of the site rather than override them the Patios House is an exercise in coexistence By embracing rather than erasing the site’s original features especially the giant stones that once posed a design challenge the house turns its constraints into compositional elements drawing light and air through every corner while the courtyard becomes both heart and hinge A place where contemporary living is not carved into nature but grown with it the home is partially buried to reduce its visual impact and connect it with the landscape the Patios House is embedded into a sloped site dotted with large natural boulders movement between the sunlit home unfolds slowly and intentionally indoor and outdoor spaces flow together to create a continuous experience with the garden the one-story residence is organized around a central landscaped courtyard bringing light and air into the surrounding rooms the house adopts the posture of a guest on the land: restrained and respectful architect: Felipe Hess Arquitetos | @felipehessarquitetos photography: © Fran Parente | @franparente design team: Felipe Hess, Lucas Miilher, Manuela Siffert interior designer: Felipe Hess, Patricia Sturm engineer: Zappacon Engenharia structure: Benedictis Engenharia Ltda., Eng. from the route traced by the user And it is precisely the functional and efficient design that results in the versatility of uses and calibrate privacy levels. The landscape design by Renata Tilli and Juliana do Val (Gaia Projetos) reinforces the integration with nature since the house seems to delicately rest on a pre-existing garden a fishpond and organic lines pulverizes the limits between interior and exterior to the point of rising the question: are we inside or outside the house vegetations is also applied as physical and visual barrier positioned laterally to the social sector and closing off the pool area The choice of light tones and nature derived materials dialogues directly with the initiative of harmoniously blend house and landscape The stone that covers the exterior also enters the house and wraps around the walls blurring the definition of beginning and ending of spaces; the same goes for the woody ceiling another element that refers to the surrounding vegetation and brings warmth up the spaces the metallic elements on the marquee bring lightness and contemporaneity to the house “The goal was to create a harmonic decoration combining architecture design and client’s needs” To meet the family's desire for a cozy and relaxed environment wood was widely used in furniture such as the bookshelf in contrast to the neutrality of the tiled floor and stone walls.Earthy and warm tones are present throughout the decoration and add layers of complexity to the project It is possible to notice the subtle variation of colors in carpets which reinforces the sensation of a continuous gradient the family achieved their dream of having an antique piano prominently featured in the generous social area spacious tables that comfortably accommodate guests for the long and lively lunches organized by the family. As the sun sets the luminaires work to reinforce the much-desired cozy atmosphere in different environments "We managed to achieve synergy between the architectural project the interior decoration and the clients' desires which reveal the intense connection with the house where they return on the weekends in order to enjoy intense contact with nature and reinforce the bonds of family coexistence" The CompanyAbout usOur ResponsibilitySuppliersPress & MagazineCareersBackDr Oetker Purpose "Creating a Taste of Home" has been lived here for almost 100 years three strong brands ensure dynamic business in the country which is rich in contrast in many respects "That's a typical saying in the sun-kissed which also has the strongest economy on the continent Mavalério and Wilton are managed under one corporate roof Which products also make the range in Brazil unique Brazil is one of the largest of the more than 40 Dr as well as in four logistics centers and in the fieldforce Brazil is almost as big as the entire European continent While Brazil has a population of around 215 million there is an average of 25 inhabitants per square kilometer comparisons are alwayshard," smiles Carolina Stauffenegger and therefore adds: "It is not only the size of Brazil but also the structure of the food business that brings challenges Oetker Brazil's business focus and product range are unique." employees4logistic centers3brandsThree strong brands "We Brazilians also place a lot of value on hospitality," says Marketing Manager Sabrina Torquato adding: "This quality is very well expressed in the product portfolios of Dr Whether for dessert or baking: Brazilians traditionally like it sweeter than Central Europeans! In this context, Brazilian and American researchers met in an immersive workshop to discuss advances in cybersecurity and seek scientific collaborations. The event, “NSF-FAPESP Workshop on Cybersecurity and Privacy,” promoted by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and FAPESP focused on three main areas: network security; artificial intelligence and security; and information ecosystem “Network security is a consolidated field, but it faces growing challenges with the increase in the volume of information and the emergence of new technologies, such as 5G networks, quantum communication and the rise of artificial intelligence,” says Marcos Simplício professor at the Engineering School of the University of São Paulo (POLI-USP) and coordinator of the event Simplício points out that encryption protocols and intrusion detection and prevention systems are fundamental to ensuring the reliability of digital infrastructures It is worth remembering that firewalls are security devices that control traffic in and out of networks or computers “The zero trust approach has been gaining ground because it’s based on the principle that no entity should be trusted as a matter of principle regardless of its location in the network,” the researcher comments The goal of the workshop was to foster connections between Brazilian and American researchers and to create opportunities for collaborative research capable of producing innovations and making a difference in their respective fields executive director of the Harris Institute for Assured Information (HIAI) at Florida Tech (Florida Institute of Technology) and co-organizer of the workshop The event brought together 28 Brazilian researchers and 26 U.S they selected eight or nine collaborative research proposals with their respective teams to submit to the NSF and FAPESP Still on the subject of artificial intelligence Carvalho adds that the principles being used are not new What has exploded is the processing power to do the matrix calculations required for this type of application And what made this possible was the gaming industry which created processors that could do the tasks required So models that would’ve been limited to very specific applications are being popularized for anyone It’s very good because the more people use it the more artificial intelligence improves and the more it helps people solve problems Much of what we do today is already being mediated to some extent by AI What researchers are doing is basically monitoring this process and adjusting the capabilities of artificial intelligence to get the best out of its use,” Carvalho explains Another major cybersecurity challenge is the emergence of quantum computers quantum computers can break most current encryption systems due to their ability to perform calculations exponentially faster than classical computers “The field of cryptography is going through a phase of transition to new methods because of the advent of quantum computers So the community is already working hard on a new generation of algorithms which should make up the so-called post-quantum cryptography,” Dahab points out Brazil has the intellectual capacity to take off in cybersecurity the main cybersecurity research centers in Brazil today are USP and UNICAMP with relevant work in network security and cryptography as well as the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) and the Center for Advanced Studies and Systems of Recife (CESAR) which focus on malware (malicious software created to infect damage or gain unauthorized access to devices and networks) and cyber-attacks “Initiatives such as the National Data Protection Authority [ANPD] the National Cyber Defense Committee [CNDCyber] and the Hackers do Bem program are examples of positive cybersecurity actions taking place in Brazil One of the major challenges is to guarantee the privacy of users while at the same time enabling the investigation and prevention of cybercrime,” says Simplício Subscribe INX began operations in South America four years ago by acquiring one of the country’s leading manufacturers of flexographic and gravure packaging inks in São Bernardo the company opened a new two-piece metal decorating facility in Itatiba and has since increased its portfolio by establishing two smaller metal decoration operations in Colombia and Paraguay ‘This development is in alignment with the company’s goal to be a cohesive global organization Our initial acquisition in 2016 allowed INX International to have a physical presence in South America with a successful company that had a strong reputation and management team The solvent ink manufacturing facility occupies 97,000 sqft and its business is doing well and growing,’ said John Hrdlick president and CEO of INX International Ink business at the metal decorating manufacturing facility in Itatiba has flourished since it first opened as a 24,000 sqft facility in September 2018 ‘We have increased its footprint to 32,000 square-feet to accommodate the increasing amount of ink it produces we have plans to increase its capacity in 2021,’ added Hrdlick Operations in Colombia and Paraguay that began in 2019 are experiencing similar success supplies metal decorating for a liquid ink market that continues to develop in the region Paraguay is distributing the same type of ink and Hrdlick is pleased with the progress all of the operations are exhibiting ‘We are very excited about the current and future opportunities in South America It will likely lead to improving our solvent ink manufacturing capabilities continue to develop our metal decorating business and also explore other product lines where we can utilize existing INX technologies Our plans include a facility in Paraguay for 2021 to generate additional opportunities in Argentina and Chile,’ concluded Hrdlick Gain knowledge with articles and videos collated from Researchers supported by FAPESP identified a group of bacteria and a yeast that have adapted to such conditions on photovoltaic panels The panels are installed in Sorocaba and Itatiba An article reporting the results of the research is published in the Editor’s Choice section of FEMS Microbiology Letters an official journal of the Federation of European Microbiology Societies the microorganisms identified have significant potential to be developed into products that entail long periods of exposure to sunlight such as sunscreens and pigments for processed foods as well as more efficient detergents with antimicrobial action for cleaning the panels themselves “We concluded that the composition of this microbiota is very similar to that found on photovoltaic panels in Valencia [Spain] and even in the Arctic and Antarctic,” said Juliane Moura who conducted the study as part of her master’s research for the Program of Graduate Studies in Biotechnology and Environmental Monitoring (PPGBMA) at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) in Sorocaba with a scholarship from the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) “Although the countries studied have different climates, the surface of panels in all of them is home to a community of microorganisms that have adapted to solar radiation, temperature fluctuation, water scarcity, and the very material the panels are made of,” said Iolanda Duarte a professor in the Department of Biology at UFSCar’s Center for Human and Biological Sciences (CCHB) and last author of the article The samples were collected by scrubbing the panels located in Sorocaba and Itatiba with gauze bandage soaked in sterile saline They were then stored in flasks and shipped to UFSCar’s Applied Microbiology Laboratory the researchers identified similar compositions in all the samples although diversity was slightly higher in the samples collected in the rural area of Sorocaba 16S rRNA gene sequencing is commonly used for identification classification and quantitation of microbes within complex biological mixtures such as environmental samples (e.g The results were similar to those of studies conducted in Spain the Arctic and Antarctic despite the differences in geography and climate The bacterial genera Methylobacterium methylorubrum and Hymenobacter accounted for over 90% of the total microbial diversity observed Understanding communities of microorganisms on photovoltaic panels can also help maintain the panels’ efficiency over time studies show that soiling (accumulated dust and microorganisms) can reduce power production by 11% after 18 months exceeding 50% when extreme weather events such as sand and dust storms occur the dust found on the panels is rich in microorganisms some bacteria cluster in biofilms that line the panels and reduce their capacity to capture solar radiation the researchers isolated a pigmented yeast that is found on solar panels in regions with a cold climate and can be used to produce biodetergents These molecules are considered versatile in terms of applications meaning they reduce surface tension in water to help it blend with water-insoluble substances They also have potential applications as anti-microbials and in bioremediation processes to clean up 8soil and groundwater contaminated by discharged chemicals “Biofilm removal is difficult in many economic activities so the study is an important contribution to the development of novel solar panel management strategies,” Duarte said “Future research involving the biodetergent yeast could offer an alternative route for the formulation of more effective cleaning products for solar panels and other equipment.” Organisms that can withstand and even thrive in conditions such as those found on photovoltaic panels are known as extremophiles Some of the bacteria identified in Sorocaba and Itatiba had previously been detected in soil samples from the Taklamaken Some of the isolates were of particular interest to the researchers because they were pigmented and grew in different temperature bands ranging from 3 °C to 50 °C The presence of pigment may be associated with the capacity to surmount oxidative stress when excessive production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species is harmful to biological organisms Solar radiation and water loss are among the causes of oxidative stress Photovoltaic panels have a smooth and sloping surface designed not to retain water The researchers isolated 63 microorganisms with the potential to withstand ultraviolet rays These will be analyzed in the laboratory to discover their actual resistance to UV and explore possible biotech applications The article “Extremophilic taxa predominate in a microbial community of photovoltaic panels in a tropical region” by Juliane B.
