Nelson Jardim previously spent two spells on the coaching staff at Swansea City
Head coach Nelson Jardim has left Newport County by mutual consent after just under a season in charge of the League Two club
The 46-year-old Portuguese coach took up the role on an initial one-year deal last summer
"I have known Nelson for 15 years and we have always been open and honest with each other,'' said chairman Huw Jenkins
"He felt that it was best for him and the club to move on with just two games left and our league status now secure."
Assistant manager Dafydd Williams will take interim charge of Newport's final two games at Fleetwood on Saturday (15:00 BST) and at home against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday
Jardim hinted to BBC Sport Wales last week that he was considering his future at the Exiles
with his wife and young children still living in Portugal
it suited me and it suited the club to have a one-year contract," Jardim said
"The changes were for the club and for me as well
I have a young family and we need to assess everything
That conversation has to come at the end of the season
I've always felt confident with that and since the start
Newport dig in for precious point to frustrate Walsall
Jardim coy on future as Newport County boss
Newport say the decision was made at a meeting with the club's chairman Jenkins after Monday's goalless draw at home to Walsall
With two games remaining Newport are 20th in League Two on 49 points
"I can't thank Nelson enough for his hard work
especially as he left his young family in Portugal to take on the role," added Jenkins
who completed a takeover of the club in January 2024
"He took on a tough challenge with lots of changes at the club from a squad overhaul to the way we operate and work
"His main goal was to keep the club in League Two during a season of transition so that we can start building for the future
but he feels that with the job completed then it was time for him to look for a new challenge
"Having taken on board his thoughts and the timing
it also allows us the space to reflect and plan over the final two games and the summer to appoint a replacement as quickly as possible."
Jardim took charge of the club following the departure of Graham Coughlan in June 2024 with Jenkins promising a "new direction" for the club
The Exiles then signed 17 new players during last summer's transfer window
while Jenkins is now looking to make his second managerial appointment in the coming months
"It's been a difficult season at times
but considering all the experience we have gained over the last 12 months then I believe there is a clear understanding of what we need to move us forward as a team and a club," said Jenkins
"We will be looking to bring in the right manager or head coach to build on those last 12 months so we can start the season strongly; move the club forward and challenge for the top part of League Two."

International experience and the search for results at Cruzeiro Leonardo Jardim has had spells at clubs like Braga
he led the French team to the Champions League semifinals
developing talents like Mbappé and managing stars like Falcao García
Jardim's career has not been all about success
After spending time in Série B and coming back into the top division with struggles
It does not have the structure or key players to bear the pressure of Série A in the Campeonato Brasileiro
Leonardo Jardim arrives with the mission of creating a winning mentality-one that has been lacking over the last few seasons
A question now very much in the air is whether he will be given sufficient time to do so
as one would expect where immediate results are in demand

Christopher Haworth continues to dominate pro singles irrespective of the tour he plays on
The top half of the draw featured #1 Christopher Haworth starting off his event against a familiar name: former APP singles gold medalist and #32 seed Frank Anthony Davis
Haworth was stretched to 19-17 in the first game before advancing
but certainly would have preferred an easier opening round
It didn’t get much easier for the three-time defending APP event singles champ; he had to down Max “Purple Jesus” Manthou in the quarters and the always-tough Eduardo Irizarry in the semis to return to championship Sunday
The rest of the top seeds mostly advanced as expected
with the notable exception of #4 seed Ryler DeHart
who ran into the excellent and drastically under-seeded Brandon Lane in the opener and fell
topping fellow MLP challenger player Eric Oncins in the 16s before falling to Irizarry in the quarters
The top two seeds from the bottom half advanced as expected to meet in a star studded semis: #2 Grayson Goldin faced off against #3 Jack Foster in the bottom semi
both as gold medal winners in major events this season
but couldn’t overcome Haworth in the final to give Chris his 4th title in a row and his 6th on the APP this year
The tour’s #1 ranked singles player Megan Fudge withdrew at the onset
leaving a gaping hole from the top quadrant of the draw
cruising into the semis from the top half without much trouble
fresh of a quarter finals’ topping of #5 Bobbi Oshiro
Newell ground out a close two-game win to secure her first APP singles final
She took a bronze in an APP singles event last April
the bottom half also saw its top seed eliminated early
as #2 Amanda Hendry went out in the opening round to #31 seed Alejandra Lopez Borobia
a native Puerto Rican who played her college tennis at the University of St
Thomas in Houston but who has now pivoted to pro pickleball
Borobia fell in the quarters to another surprise player Emilia Schmidt
but none of them could handle the pressure of the original G.O.A.T
who got a series of solid wins from the #6 seed spot to secure a spot in the final
Simone put up a good fight but Newell was too tough
coming from a game down to finish off her first APP gold medal with a 15-2 game three domination
James salvaged the Bronze for her second medal in as many months (she also took bronze in Chicago in September)
#1 APP player Megan Fudge bowed out of Singles this week
perhaps in deference to her busy playing schedule as of late between MLP and the APP
but she did team up with her regular MLP playing partner Jack Munro to cruise into the final of the Mixed doubles from the top half
#11 Casey Diamond & Daria Walczak went on a massive upset run in the bottom half
beating both the 2nd and 3rd seeds to get to the finals and secure a first career medal for Casey
Fudge and Munro finished off the gold medal with a 7,2 win
The Men’s doubles draw semis whittled down to a couple of top seeds and a couple of surprise advancers
#1 Rob Nunnery & Jack Munro cruised into the semis
but fell in the semis to the excellent #4 team of Erik Lange & Max Manthou
who have been getting a ton of cycles together playing for the SoCal Hard Eights
NYC Open champ Mario Barrientos went on a deep run with PJ Kawka
topping the #2 seed before falling in the semis to the surprise team of Will Howells & relative unknown Mark Dancuart (a Peruvian player who now lives in Boca Raton)
Lange & Manthou ground out a win over the dark-horse challengers to earn their 2nd APP Doubles gold medal this year
The juggernaut #1 team of Megan Fudge & Jill Braverman cruised into the final from the top half
topping nemesis #4 Susannah Barr and her partner Glauka Carvajal Lane in the semis
the #3 seeds Yana Newell & Emily Cedarquist dominated the #2 seeds Jardim & Harris 7,0 to get back to the final
Fudge and Braverman won their second weekend in a row
grinding out a 12-10 first game win before taking over and winning 12,7

Next up for the APP? The APP SoCal Open in Newport Beach is in two weeks, visiting one of the nicest venues on tour.
Nelson Jardim joined Swansea in 2009 and left the club following his second spell there
Newport County boss Nelson Jardim has admitted his future as head coach of the Exiles is unclear
Newport are still not fully clear of League Two relegation after a poor run of results with Jardim being scrutinised by some of the County fans and his contract expiring this summer
The ex-Swansea coach says he never wanted a long tenure as boss and cited his young family in Portugal as a reason he is calm about his future
with talks planned with chairman and owner Huw Jenkins at the end of the season
it suited me and it suited the club to have a one-year contract," Jardim told BBC Sport Wales
Colchester net twice late on to beat Newport
"I will finish this season still doing that."
The Exiles travel to MK Dons on Friday with Walsall the visitors on Easter Monday
Following a terrible end to last season where the Exiles lost eight on the spin
Jardim says it is imperative the players finish stronger than last season
"We don't want to go and finish the season like the club finished the last one," Jardim said
to take responsibility for us losing the last game in the way we lost
"The players have to take the responsibility for some of the results not going our way
Ultimately I am responsible but it is about them being at it and focused."
Jardim has spoken previously about players who are out of contract at the end of the season playing for their futures but he feels that ship might have now sailed
"Some players out of contract have had enough time and chances to prove and to show what they can do
I wouldn't be honest if I didn't say that," he added
We need to stay as professional as we can be."
Newport are 10 points clear of the relegation zone in League Two
but not yet mathematically safe and Jardim is urging the players to stick to their task
"We still haven't finished our job
We could have done it two or three weeks ago
but haven't quite done it yet," he said
"No one can accuse me of selling dreams that weren't doable
We wanted a comfortable season and for the most part we've had that
Sometimes expectations went beyond what we could deliver."
Getty ImagesPublished7 April 2025Nelson Jardim has apologised to Newport County fans for not acknowledging their support after Saturday's Carlisle capitulation
claiming he was caught up in a "heated moment" in the tunnel
Jardim said it was the most frustrated he has felt all season on the road after the Exiles threw away a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 to League Two's bottom side
Newport were 2-0 up inside 28 minutes through Kieron Evans and Bobby Kamwa
but United turned the game on its head with three second-half goals
I would like to apologise to our fans," said Jardim
being 2-0 up and then losing it in that way
I had to ask a couple of questions and I was caught up in the tunnel."
The Portuguese coach said his "heated moment" kept him in the tunnel "for a long period"
which led to him not going to acknowledge the supporters who had made the 560-mile round trip
and thanking the fans because they've been great to us
"But I think they will understand I wanted some answers
"I was caught up in a heated moment which I'm not proud of
but sometimes the emotions just go through you and I have to fight for my club."
County's second-half collapse at Brunton Park led to their fifth successive away defeat as Mark Hughes' side gave themselves a lifeline in the battle to beat the drop
Asked whether Saturday was the most frustrating away performance of the season
It's just a pity because we again fell short when it came to defending duels
aerial balls...when it's a battle we always struggle."
now have three home games and two away matches left of a largely disappointing campaign
They will be hoping for a first win in five matches when Colchester visit Rodney Parade on 12 April
Huw Evans Picture AgencyPublished20 April 2025Nelson Jardim says he is proud of Newport County's efforts during the course of his debut campaign at the club so far
They have endured numerous difficult spells since Jardim was named as Graham Coughlan's successor last summer and are currently winless in six matches
The Exiles can mathematically clinch League Two survival on Monday when they host promotion-chasing Walsall at Rodney Parade (12:30 BST)
Despite plenty of ups and downs since being named as boss
Jardim believes the tougher experiences from the 2024-25 campaign will stand Newport in good stead in the long term
"I'm proud of what we have been doing this season," he told BBC Radio Wales after his side's 0-0 draw at MK Dons on Friday
"Sometimes things don't go our way
Set plays have let us down in a lot of games
but I'm pleased coming here (to MK Dons)
we know they've got a really good manager with a project in front of him
You can't say you're going to win or lose any game
It's about what you're able to deliver on the day
Sometimes teams are not able to do that and we went through those spells
We were expecting to have that this season
"Hopefully next season the club will be much better
Hopefully that stability that the club needs
having been through this experience will help the club."
Walsall appeared destined to cruise to the League Two title earlier on this year
But the Saddlers dropped out of the top three ahead of their trip to south Wales as their winless run was extended to 11 matches following a 2-2 draw with Harrogate Town
Following the contest with Mat Sadler's side
Newport travel to Fleetwood Town on 26 April before rounding off the season at home against relegation-threatened Tranmere Rovers a week later
Nelson Jardim replaced Graham Coughlan as Newport County boss ahead of the 2024/25 season
Head coach Nelson Jardim says Newport County "haven't been fighting with the same weapons" when battling League Two rivals this season
The Exiles face play-off chasing Notts County on Saturday hoping to continue impressive home form that is only bettered by the division's top four sides
It has helped move the club clear of any relegation battle
achieving the target of "comfort" set out as chairman Huw Jenkins oversaw a huge turnover of players over the summer
With last season's takeover clearing historic debts
there had been a focus of finding financial stability off the field and signing of a number of untested players on it
with 18th-placed Newport 15 points clear of the bottom two but 13 points short of the play-offs
Jardim admitted: "In this league there are teams with different approaches and we are not fighting with the same weapons
"We probably need to be more creative and intelligent to compete."
Newport chairman Jenkins outlines big change of approach
Newport County accounts to show 'light moving forward'
Jardim says he wants his players – many of whom are playing their first full year of senior football – to use their final eight fixtures to show they can be confident going into next season
With no side winning fewer points away from home
form on the road has proven costly to any higher ambitions this term
Jardim said: "There are good signs there – and it is backed up with evidence and data
"The challenge is to use the last eight games to show a clear future in terms of the team and the way we want to play
"Because of injuries and suspensions we have had to adapt and we have been clever to find ways of winning games to give us that comfort
"But we need to take these eight games to show what can be the beginning of the next season."
A quieter summer of recruitment is planned at Newport
but the Portuguese former Swansea City coach says the foundations laid in this campaign will allow the club to be more targeted in their transfer dealings
"We knew that some of the boys would need time to play more games," added Jardim
"We have started that process and now when we look to improve the team we are able to be more precise in the type of player and what they will offer us
"Now we know the players and what we need
Huw Evans Picture AgencyPublished4 April 2025
Newport County will embark on their longest away trip of the season on Saturday - a gruelling 560-mile round trip to face League Two's bottom side Carlisle at Brunton Park
Travelling has been the Exiles' Achilles heel this season, with 13 losses and just three wins on the road, an area Nelson Jardim has been trying to remedy in recent weeks.
and eat," said County head coach Jardim
"But it's always tough traveling that far
A vocal contingent of more than 100 Newport supporters are expected to make the mammoth trip to north west England and Jardim is determined to give them something to cheer about
"We need to make sure we put on a good performance because we are playing for the fans as well," he added
hosts Carlisle - managed by former Wales boss Mark Hughes - are nine points from safety and fighting tooth and nail for EFL survival
Newport are 17th having been denied an 11th home win of the season by a late Bromley equaliser on Tuesday
They may have no relegation worries but Jardim insists victory on Saturday remains important as he looks to finish the season strongly and lay the foundations for future success at the club
every game has been important," he said prior to the long trip to Carlisle
"It's a huge game for us as well."

condo board claimsBuilding featured in “Owning Manhattan” surprises developer Harlan Berger with lawsuit
Since closings began at the swanky Jardim condos in 2019
developers Centaur Properties and Greyscale Development Group have sold a fair number of multimillion-dollar pads
But the common charges for their unsold units have not been paid to the condo’s account
according to a lawsuit filed yesterday by the building’s board
The condo board of the 36-unit property overlooking the High Line accused the sponsors of owing $44,000 on two commercial units still owned by an entity related to Centaur
The board recorded liens against the two commercial units and is requesting foreclosure judgments on both units
The southern unit spans 4,647 square feet and the northern unit is 4,910
Centaur Properties founder Harlan Berger said he had not heard of the suit until he was contacted by The Real Deal
The dispute is over an assessment implemented by the board
and has been awaiting information to support the amount the board has requested for the assessment
“They’ve been communicating about this for months back and forth
so it’s shocking to me that it’s filed,” Pappas
“I didn’t even get notice of it as their lawyer from the board lawyer.”

The complex was the first in New York City designed by Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld and features a “paparazzi-proof” private driveway
Parking spaces are for sale for as much as $600,000
A penthouse in the complex sold for $15 million this May after making waves for having been rented to rapper Bad Bunny for $150,000 a month the previous year. The negotiations for the rental appeared on the season finale of Ryan Serhant’s reality show “Owning Manhattan.”
Other notable sales in the building have included a $10 million deal for Unit 9S and an $8.4 million purchase of Unit 9A
Centaur and Greyscale acquired the 35,000-square-foot property in 2013 for $45 million and landed a $115 million financing deal in 2016

Claudia Jardim is a Brazilian freelance journalist who specializes in human rights issues across Latin America and South Asia. Her impactful work earned her recognition as a 2021 Professional Fellows Program for Emerging Media Leaders (PFP EML) fellow and a 2022 Alumni Engagement Grant awardee
Since its inception the PFP EML fellowship has supported over 200 news professionals from Latin America and the Caribbean
providing opportunities to develop digital projects through a U.S
Some PFP EML fellows can be selected for an ECA Alumni Engagememnt Grant, which supports media initiatives that have the potential to transform Latin American journalism. With this funding, Jardim launched No Labirinto
a podcast about modern-day slavery in Brazil
This interview has been edited for clarity
Let’s say you are talking to someone reading your ICFJ Voices profile that knows nothing about modern slavery in Brazil — what’s one thing you want them to know
I would say that modern slavery is an issue that is related to everybody
Modern slavery is connected to the clothes that we wear
The production chain is connected to modern slavery.
A t-shirt that costs only $1 or $2 would not have had a fair production
Someone was exploited to produce that t-shirt
and modern slavery is a part of daily life there
It's connected to the human trafficking migration
So many of the people that are enslaved there come from Myanmar
A scene that makes me crazy was just a few weeks after I arrived
a group of Myanmar migrants were found dead in the jungle of Thailand
the deal that the trafficker had with the person didn't go well
and basically they just left them to die in the jungle
we have 50 million people worldwide being enslaved right now. It's a lot
It's much more than during the colonial period with the slave trade from Africa to America
we don't talk about that as much as we should
I know that it's happening in Brazil as well
So I was writing articles for BBC and Al Jazeera about modern slavery in Southeast Asia
but I also found it interesting to narrate those stories here in Brazil.
So much of your background was in documentary and print before starting your podcast
What inspired your transition into podcasting
Radio was never my format. But then I did podcasts with Radio Ambulante
And I basically fell in love with them because the structure is similar to documentary
where I could write in a way that I like to – not like short versions of stories. You can use narrative and storytelling techniques that in journalism
is that space where we can experiment more
I think podcasts are a venue where we can explore more and experiment while using techniques that are interesting
How has your podcast evolved since receiving the Emerging Media Leaders grant in 2021
but it did cover the research for two episodes when I was in Thailand
And it was especially important because my podcast isn’t about a commercial topic
I'm going to do a podcast about modern slavery.’ You know
I understand that we need to talk about tough topics as well
‘yeah you should do it.’ It’s something that is not in the spotlight
ICFJ’s grant showed others that this project is reliable
And then IWMF ended up funding the whole production.
I do consider that ICFJ was so important in the beginning
in the seed fund stage that helped me to trust that my idea was a good idea.
What’s a ‘No Labirinto' story that stands out to you
One of my podcasts called ‘Pureza: The saga of a mother searching for her enslaved son.’
her son disappeared and she tried to find him for three and a half years
So she was jumping from one state to another trying to find her son who was enslaved
she understood what modern slavery looks like
And she understood the web of how guys trap workers in those situations.
This was in the 90s when the government didn't recognize modern slavery as an issue
So then she was like part of this abolitionism where citizens were pushing the government to change
She was also a part of the period when the president recognized modern slavery in Brazil
I was just admitted to do a masters on migration and climate change
I want to combine those topics to show how some people are forced to migrate because of climate change
This makes them vulnerable to being trapped in modern slavery work
Climate change is going to worsen the situation for everybody
People will be displaced due to climate change
And when they are forced to migrate to another country where you don't know the language
What do you have to say to up-and-coming journalists
I think it’s key to be passionate about the story that you're going to cover
I guess this is the biggest advice I could give you because you are going to learn the other things step by step
when we don't know everything all the time
we have a career that we can learn from all the time
Every article pushes you to learn because you need to interview people
and then you need to study to interview that person
and then you understand another perspective from that reality that maybe you didn't know before

Serhant’s Kristina Paces and Celine Coudert De Besson represented the musician in the rental deal
The penthouse was asking just under $18 million when it went into contract earlier this year
after initially asking $21 million when it was offered off floor plans in 2016

Huw Evans Picture AgencyPublished31 March 2025Nelson Jardim has backed his players to improve as Newport County prepare to face a side who tormented them from set pieces on Boxing Day
Jardim's side will look for revenge over Bromley on Tuesday night (19.45 BST) after the south London side scored four goals from set pieces in their 5-2 home win over County on 26 December
Newport will also hope to put smiles back on fans' faces at Rodney Parade after losing for just a second time in eight home league games with Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Notts County
"We can only back the players to look forward and improve....I have nothing [negative] to say in terms of effort or commitment as the boys did their best against Notts County," said Jardim
"We knew it was always going to be tough playing against a good team
"In the last 25 minutes of the first half we were probably the better team
but I'm quite sure we were 50/50 in terms of possession in the second half
Jardim expects a "completely different game" against a Bromley side 13th in League Two - five places and six points above 18th-placed Newport
"They play a different style," he said
the evidence is there - in that game [on Boxing Day] we conceded from three corners
and the last one was a free-kick just outside the box
but completely different to this one [Notts County]
But we have to look at ourselves and improve the way we want to play the game."
Jardim said injured striker Kyle Hudlin will not be back for Bromley's visit
but could be available for Saturday's trip to Carlisle
Defender Kyle Jameson is not ready to return yet either
Exiles head coach Nelson Jardim addressed an alleged incident of racial abuse towards a Colchester player in the 2-0 loss against the U’s at Rodney Parade
The match was blighted by an allegation of racist abuse from a home fan towards striker Samson Tovide as he left the pitch at half-time
but will always be against that type of abuse
“I am sure the club will deal with it properly behind the scenes.”
Jardim felt his side were hard done by after Kai Whitmore went close several times and David Ajiboye hit a post in the second half
“It was very difficult to take,” added the Portuguese
if you had to choose the better team it was the one that lost
“I told the boys that they let themselves down because it came down to two moments and set-plays again
Colchester manager Danny Cowley said of the alleged racial abuse: “It’s not a reflection on Newport County
“It’s an incident that’s being investigated
“But we’ll never walk past these incidents
And that’s not acceptable in the 21st century
Cowley praised his side’s never-say-die attitude as they scored twice late on to beat Newport and stay in the Sky Bet League Two play-off hunt
The U’s looked to be heading for a damaging draw
which would have left them five points below seventh-placed Grimsby as the Mariners were 2-0 up at Harrogate
as Grimsby conceded twice late on to draw 2-2
Fiacre Kelleher headed in Mandela Egbo’s free-kick to break the deadlock in the 88th minute at Rodney Parade before substitute Anthony Scully sealed a vital victory in stoppage time
“It was a brilliant finish and a great win
but I’ve had easier Saturdays,” joked Cowley
who saw experienced forward Lyle Taylor carried off the pitch on stretcher in the 12th minute
“We had a brilliant start to the game and then lost Lyle to what looks like a serious injury and that affected everyone because he’s such an important part of our group
“But I was proud of the resilience we showed
we kept going and ultimately ended up winning the game.”
The victory leaves Cowley’s men just one point below Grimsby with four games to play
“It’s not for us to get too excited,” added the U’s boss
Our task is to stay focused on trying to perform.”

Newport County have parted ways with head coach Nelson Jardim by mutual consent
just days after confirming their survival in League Two
Appointed in July 2024 on a one-year contract
Jardim leaves with the Exiles sitting 20th
with the interim coach Dafydd Williams taking over for the final two games
The decision comes after a goalless draw with Walsall
which secured Newport’s status in the English Football League for the 2025–26 season
Chairman Huw Jenkins thanked Jardim for his dedication
acknowledging the difficulties he encountered
including a squad overhaul and being away from his family in Portugal
“I have known Nelson for 15 years and we have always been open and honest with each other,’’ Jenkins said in a statement
“He felt that it was best for him and the club to move on with just two games left and our league status now secure
“I can’t thank Nelson enough for his hard work, commitment and loyalty
especially as he left his young family in Portugal to take on the role
“He took on a tough challenge with lots of changes at the club
from a squad overhaul to the way we operate and work.
“His main goal was to keep the club in League Two during a season of transition so that we can start building for the future
It took us longer than we probably wanted
but he feels that with the job completed then it was time for him to look for a new challenge.”
Jardim took over as the manager of the club after Graham Coughlan’s departure in June 2024
Jenkins promised a “new direction” for the club following this change
The Exiles signed 17 new players during the previous summer’s transfer window
and Jenkins is now looking to make his second managerial appointment in the coming months
Newport County states that they will begin their search on finding a new manager

Football
Al Ain FC announces the signing of Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim until the end of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 📄🤝 pic.twitter.com/5QApFn6r2H
The new Campeonato Brasileiro 2025 got underway this weekend
with Leonardo Jardim marking his debut in the top flight by guiding Cruzeiro to victory
last season’s top 2 each had a Portuguese on the bench as Abel Ferreira’s Palmeiras were held to a goalless draw by champions Botafogo
there was a Portuguese goalscorer for Vasco da Gama as the Rio de Janeiro club handed Pedro Caixinha’s Santos a defeat on his Serie A debut
led by Pepa and with a trio of Portuguese players
there was a solid opening-day draw at Sao Paulo
One new big managerial name in Brazilian football is Leonardo Jardim
the well-travelled Portuguese who took charge of Cruzeiro over the summer break
Jardim was hired on a two-year contract at the start of February
having enjoyed great success in the Middle East
where he won the Saudi title and the Asian Champions League with Al Hilal
before lifting the UAE Pro League with Al Shabab
Jardim was at the Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto in Belo Horizonte as Cruzeiro welcomed newly-promoted Mirassol on Matchday 1 of the new campaign
Early goals by Dudu (14’) and former Benfica man Gabriel Barbosa (22’) put Jardim’s side in control
but the visitors missed a penalty before pulling one back in first-half stoppage time through Lucas Ramon
and some not so good things,” Jardim said after the match
“I've already said that I didn't like the last 10 minutes of the first half at all because we lost the pressure and let the opponent control the game with the ball
We certainly haven't done so well for the beginning
The beginning is always the most difficult moment
it will be interesting to follow the expectations of Raposa across the new season
Cruzeiro came into the weekend a little more rusty than some of the other big clubs
having not played a competitive match for 40 days since an underwhelming performance in the Minas Gerais state championships during Jardim’s early days in charge
Fixing a leaky defence remains one of the 50-year-old’s biggest tasks
Cruzeiro have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last ten official matches – the latest being the win over Mirassol
next up for Cruzeiro is a trip to Argentina on Tuesday to play Unión Santa Fé in the first match of the Copa Sudamericana group stage
Last season’s top two faced off in São Paulo on Sunday
with Brazilian and South American champions Botafogo handed a tough fixture at Palmeiras to mark Renato Paiva’s Serie A debut on the bench
Paiva has taken on the daunting job of replacing fellow Portuguese Artur Jorge at Botafogo
who lifted both the Campeonato Brasileiro and Copa Libertadores last term
The teams played out a 0-0 draw at Allianz Parque
but the visitors earned more praise for their showing under Paiva
Botafogo played with similar intensity and dynamism which encapsulated their historic season under Jorge last term
something Paiva was happy to see on his first outing
but I'm sure that it will once again confirm that this is a group of champions,” he said
“There were demonstrations of talent at various times
That's how they won the titles and that's how they'll continue to win
It would be very unwise to come here and change what was done in a game plan that gave the club two titles
my job is to understand the characteristics of the players who arrived and see if it was possible to continue in the same way
I like my team to be complete. We want a Botafogo to be balanced without taking away individuality.”
Abel Ferreira faced tougher questions about his Palmeiras side
who after finishing without a trophy last term and losing the Paulista State Championship to Corinthians last week
with just one (via a penalty) across their last four matches
including three straight blank scoresheets
Media reaction has focused on a lack of incision
particularly due to major summer signing Vitor Roque from Barcelona having a tendency to involve himself in build-up rather than providing the penetrative runs the team lacks
admitted his players must be more proactive
“I told the players in the circle that we did it at the end and sometimes we need to attack further behind our opponent,” Abel said
touching and that is not what we have to do
“We need to have all the players available
maybe a win to give us a bit of confidence
We came from the Paulista final and we didn't have much time to prepare these players
Botafogo had a week or 15 days to prepare for the game
And we are coming from a final that was difficult for us
we knew the game was going to be difficult
We didn't play against just any opponent and our spirits weren't good
“We are far from our level and that's a good thing
because in the end the most obvious opportunity was ours
we have to be focused on what we have to do to stay in each competition until the end.”
Whilst Brazil has become accustomed to Portuguese managers dominating the coaching landscape in the country
the arrival of Luso players has been a little slower to emerge
with a small but growing contingent across various clubs in the Campeonato Brasileiro
One of those making his mark is former Vizela and Casa Pia winger Nuno Moreira
who scored for Vasco da Gama this weekend in their 2-1 home victory over Santos
The result inflicted an early defeat on new Santos boss Pedro Caixinha
who switched from fellow São Paulo outfit RB Bragantino during the summer break
Caixinha’s side got off to a good start at Estádio São Januário
taking advantage of a mistake in Vasco’s build-up play to go ahead on 21 minutes through Argentine Alvaro Barreal
Santos continued to threaten in the first period
leading to audible frustration from the home crowd
who cost Vasco €3.5m from Casa Pia in February
levelled things up early in the second half with a brave back-post header
It meant goals in consecutive games for the 25-year-old
who found the net against Flamengo in Vasco’s last outing during the Carioca State Championships
Portuguese winger Nuno Moreira scores on the opening weekend of the new Brazilian season, helping Vasco da Gama beat Santos 2-1 tonight.pic.twitter.com/QgIQD1dzh1
denied initially by a truly astonishing save by Santos goalkeeper Gabriel Brazão
before later snatching all three points when a glaringly unmarked Pablo Vegetti glanced his header into the far corner from a free-kick delivery
were left to count the cost of their lead slipping
the opposing team was failing to make many passes
the opposing team and the crowd were upset
“It was with this emotional advantage that we went into the break
The first message we gave the players was that we had to make a very strong start to the game
to take advantage of the momentum we had ended the first half with
“It's true that one or two players felt some difficulty
There was no drop in (physical) performance
But if we analyse the physical aspect only based on that
at the start of the game and in the moments when we gave the opponent the opportunity to respond
The opponent took advantage and they did it well.”
Perhaps more concerning for Caixinha was the angry analysis from Santos president Marcelo Teixeira
it appears the Peixe leader expects the team to be a serious force in the championship this term
while even pointing to Caixinha’s substitutions
“It was unacceptable for Santos to start a campaign here
in which they want to be the protagonist and stay on the front page of the championship
A team that wants to reach the championship final among the top teams can't concede the goals we concede
“We don't want to remain in secondary competitions that are different from our tradition
We have to come back and say that Santos is
it has the ability to put in a good campaign and we need this reaction
I see the natural changes that the coach made
But the team was already making an important
I think it was more due to the changes that were made
in which the team took a while to establish a rhythm again.”
The first match of the opening week saw Portuguese boss Pepa take his newly promoted Sport Recife to São Paulo on Saturday afternoon
The visitors were given an early let-off when São Paulo were awarded an almost instant penalty
which was blazed over the bar by Jonathan Calleri in the 3rd minute
after which the sides played out a 0-0 draw
Sport recruited three Portuguese players during the close-season
including established names in the form of ex Porto duo Sérgio Oliveira and Gonçalo Paciência
as well as former Sporting defender João Silva
Paciência was missing but both Sérgio Oliveira and João Silva started for Sport
while veteran Euro 2016 winner Cédric Soares was an unused substitute for São Paulo
Pepa received praise for his tactical acumen in the media
having shown versatility and pragmatism with his approach
Sport were renowned for their proactive style in the second tier last season
but opted to crowd the midfield against Sao Paulo to frustrate their opponents
gaining just 35% of possession but making the side “a strategist” according to O Globo
“If we had not competed to this degree here
we would have lost,” Pepa said after the match
We have to highlight above all the defensive organisation
what is non-negotiable is this spirit of dedication
“A penalty in the first minute could have caused a lot of emotional problems
The team knew how to suffer and when they managed to have the ball they had no problems playing
By @SeanGillen9
Newport boss Nelson Jardim labelled his side’s performance as “not good enough” as they struggled to trouble rampant Doncaster in a 3-0 throughout a difficult afternoon in South Yorkshire
He said: “The way we conceded goals was not good enough
We lost focus and we just have to get back to the minimum level that is needed to compete
I couldn’t say that anybody had a good day
“From the first half you could see that the competition and the aggression that you need to have at this level was not there
“We conceded goals from individual mistakes and that is costing us
Some of the goals we are conceding are unbelievable
We lost one-v-one situations and you cannot have that level of performance.”
“We have to analyse and make sure we are stronger on Tuesday because it’s a massive game against Gillingham and we have to compete
“We didn’t have a striker today but I don’t want to use that as the sole excuse for this
it’s as simple as that and I’m not going to be finding excuses for it.”
Grant McCann was delighted with Doncaster’s “complete performance” as they coasted to a 3-0 win over Newport
A brace from Rob Street and a fine Luke Molyneux strike saw Doncaster move three points ahead of fourth-placed Notts County
McCann was buoyed by the manner of his side’s control as they secured a third straight win
with attention quickly turning to the trip to Bromley in midweek
“All this is for us today is a good win,” he said
It’s always pleasing when you get a win and a performance to go with it
“Winning is all that matters for us at this stage of the season
From a performance and control point of view
get our preparation right and get ready for a long trip down to Bromley
“I thought it was a complete performance from start to finish
all the time but I thought for 95 minutes it was a very
very good performance with three very good goals
“I’m pleased with the determination from the boys because Newport are a really dangerous team
a really dangerous front three and it was a big job for the defenders which they dealt with well.”

MBCCI President Oral Heaven hailed the Montego Bay businessman “for doing so much for the city”
we appreciate what you have done for our city and our country and
You have employed… you are feeding so many families
It is not simple to start a business from scratch and going on 28 years and you continue to grow from strength to strength
but for the many families you attach to your business,” Heaven said
“The Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry chose to recognise this giant of a man who continues to contribute to our city,” added Heaven
Jardim said it was an honour to be inducted into the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry Wall of Fame
“It’s with the deepest gratitude I accept this incredible recognition from my peers
I am honoured to be in the esteemed company of so many MoBay greats and it is particularly meaningful because Montego Bay is where it all started for me,” Jardim said
“Montego Bay has always held a special place in my heart and it’s here that my entrepreneurial journey started
and I bought an old waterfront restaurant on ‘Bottom Road’ and began our Margaritaville journey — 12 restaurants
bars and nightclubs in three islands and 15 years later
in 2010 I sold my piece of the business to focus on my other passion
He recounted that Rainforest began in 1997 in a 1,500 square foot storefront in a small plaza in Freeport
“A tiny retail store and office on a rickety wooden mezzanine above
two freezer containers and one Nissan deportee delivery van — so began our excellent adventure,” he recalled
“Today we operate in five countries with over 50 locations including plants
restaurants and docks with over 1,000 team members
We export to more than 30 countries across the world; we are a MoBay company with a global reach; a true MoBay success story,” added Jardim
He expressed heartfelt gratitude to his family
and his many friends for their unwavering support over the years
“Rainforest was built by an incredibly loyal and talented team
many of whom are here this evening sharing in this award,” he said
I couldn’t have done this without you by my side,” he said to his wife
I want to thank the incredible Rainforest dream team
and belief in our vision have been the backbone of everything we’ve achieved
I will cherish it always,” declared Jardim
Newport manager Nelson Jardim was very disappointed to see a two-goal lead slip away for his side in the 3-2 defeat away at Carlisle and thought the game’s physical battle was key to his side’s defeat
He said: “We started very well to go 2-0 up
this is the case not only in this game but in others too
it becomes physical and we have to be in a game in terms of duels but we always fall short
with set plays and we obviously knew that was going to be a tough game
when the game becomes a battle we always lose
After the game Jardim went straight down the tunnel as his side’s poor run extended – they are now winless in four games and have only won two of their last 11
The Portuguese issued an apology to the 205 fans who made the lengthy trip to Cumbria after the game
He said: “First of all I would like to send apologies to our fans
they travel in numbers and at the very end
I was very frustrated and in the heat of the moment I went down the tunnel and I didn’t go across to them
being two nil up away and losing in that way to those goals
I had to ask a couple of questions in the tunnel.”
Carlisle boss Mark Hughes hailed a ‘great win’ for his side in their comeback victory
however the Cumbrians are still eight points adrift of safety and staring down the barrel of relegation
The Exiles took the lead with two goals in a matter of minutes
Kieron Evans put them ahead and then Bobby Kamwa produced a wonder goal to send the visitors two up but a brace from Georgie Kelly and a late goal from Aaron Hayden sealed the points
Former Wales boss Hughes said: “I thought it was a great win
which we’re trying to avoid and every game we play we’ve found it difficult
There are some times when we would’ve gone under at 2-0 down
“The goal was important for us and we got them in at half-time and told them if they scored the next one that would make it difficult for Newport
I’d just asked out of curiosity when was the last time Carlisle came from 2-0 down to win and I think it was 2015
The attitude of Carlisle’s players was questioned by some quarters of their fanbase following back-to-back defeats at Doncaster and Chesterfield and Hughes thinks the performance was a good comeback
He added: “Maybe there’s been people who have questioned us and said we’re not committed or not trying
but sometimes you need a moment and some belief
