In order to evaluate the morphology of semicrystalline polymers during extrusion-based 3D printing
in-situ time-resolving small and wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements were performed at the ALBA synchrotron light source in Barcelona (Spain)
The goal of this research is to develop a material property mapping methodology during semicrystalline polymer melt extrusion-based 3D printing Some experiments were performed with low-density polyethylene
and we were able to confirm a correlation between the extrusion rate and writing speed of the printing with the level of preferred orientation of the chain folded lamellar crystals in the extrudate
In comparison to conventional manufacturing technologies, DDM has enabled a more agile exploration of complex designs, and prototyping has become much faster and less expensive. Moreover, it has been established in industrial and commercial low-volume productions, and for customized tools (e.g., jigs, fixtures) (Paritala et al., 2017)
It is assumed that scientists and engineers have another set of technical solutions when designing for manufacturing
especially while working on complex and optimized geometries
The advantage of mass customization is also beneficial for biomedical applications, where doctors and engineers combine strategies to create custom-fitting products for patients, such as in regenerative medicine, cancer therapies, and drug delivery systems (Morouço et al., 2015)

Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) addresses the length of 10–50 nm
is able to provide quantitative detail on the size of the chain folded lamellar and the nature of the preferred orientation of these lamellar
Time-resolving SAXS is able to follow in real time the transformation of a polymer melt into a semicrystalline morphology
and will reveal details of this transformation process which will not be possible to determine from scattering data on the final products at room temperature
Wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) is used to determine the crystal structure and the fractions of differing phases present at any specific time
Analysis of the WAXS in conjunction with SAXS will determine the shape of the chain-folded lamellar crystals in terms of any twisting during growth
Fused granular fabrication (FGF) (or fused particle fabrication) (Woern et al., 2018) is an extrusion-based process that uses plastic pellets instead of a filament as the feedstock
it is a suitable approach for the production of bigger parts
and for the exploitation of the materials available on the market (typically deployed in injection molding) or custom composites
the use of pellets is very straightforward
and associated extrusion systems permit a relatively constant extrusion rate (with an even flow of homogeneous melt and without material feed blockages)

Exploring materials limits in 3D printing requires a set of instruments in order to monitor
and contour the above-listed variables (the levels of the list express the dependencies of each main parameter)
The time response of the input parameters differs between them
and for an “on demand” and “on the fly” control
it is rather convenient to have a practically instantaneous transition of the real value to the successive setpoints
the property mapping depends on the time it takes for the parameter shifts to have an effect on the material morphology
and the amount of time for relaxation and/or crystallization
The importance of these factors lies in the resultant precision and resolution of the induced property texture into the object’s material
a shift in extrusion rate or print speed happens substantially quicker than with the extrusion temperature
Not only this last variable has a noticeable delay associated
but it also has a more unstable behavior with successive heating and cooling switches around the target value
within a certain interval (overshooting and undershooting)
Although an effective extrusion temperature control could be employed
this paper focuses on the changes in the writing and extrusion speeds
there are limitations such as the overall maximum velocity of the process
and the movement precision or induced vibration
the low melting temperature (typically from 105°C to 110°C) and the availability of great quantities at a small cost
turn the possibility of exploring a vast source of recycled raw material into an opportunity
increasing the value of extrusion-based 3D printing and the material itself
The exploration of material reinforcement is very significant when including recycled LDPE in the value chain since it has the potential of diluting the effects of degradation (from contaminants and broken molecular chains) induced by the recycling procedures
These additives work as nucleation agents which promote faster nucleation and a higher level of crystallinity
our ultimate goal is to reinforce the material by mapping its own properties during 3D printing
as a consequence of actively changing the process parameters
This paper describes the first of many studies to achieve that objective
Crystallization processes, whether in a melt or in a solution, involve the processes of untangling the chains and then straightening them to add to the crystal growth face, although the precise details remain unclear. In 1957, a number of researchers deduced that the polymer chains folded at the top and bottom surfaces of the crystals which take the form of thin platelets about 10 nm in thickness but up to several micrometers in the lateral directions (Keller, 1957)
Further work revealed that the chain folded lamellar crystals could develop in the framework of a spherulite in which crystals grew out from a common point in a crystallographic direction lying in the plane of the lamellae (Bassett et al., 1986). Figure 2

Spherulites have been widely studied in polymer science, and the relationships of spherulite morphology to mechanical and other properties have been extensively explored. For instance, it was shown in early studies that the number and size of spherulites are directly correlated with the yield point and overall physical behavior of polymers (Starkweather and Brooks, 1959; Pavlov, 1971)
Some efforts to better understand the local mechanical properties have been deployed for mapping along the spherulite radius (Enrique-Jimenez et al., 2016), and to manipulate these structures during the process, with the application of new conditions such as nucleation agents and external loads, obtaining a better orientation of the lamellae and overall elongation (Huan et al., 2013)
Other arrangements are possible to observe when the lamellar crystals grow out from a common row nucleus, resulting in a higher level of anisotropy. Not surprisingly these different types of spatial arrangements exhibit different properties both with regard to mechanical behavior and degradation in the case of biodegradable polymers used in biomedical applications (Shah and Vasava, 2019)
The formation of row nuclei can be associated with the development of extended chain conformations due to strain in a flow system (Phillips, 1990). Equally highly anisotropic nanoparticles, such as carbon nanotubes (Li et al., 2009) or self-assembling fibrillar nanoparticulate nucleating agents (Shazleen et al., 2021)
can lead to higher anisotropic arrangements and a higher level of crystallinity
this happens as a consequence of the common alignment of the nucleation sites
assuming that the common orientation of the particles introduced during the flow persists at the time crystallization is initiated
The same mechanism can occur with the longest molecular chains in a polymer melt. This flow-induced orientation is often associated with the formation of shish-kebab semicrystalline structures (Keller, 1970; Phillips, 1990) (represented in Figure 3)

Basically, the longest chains (with higher molecular weight) become elongated due to the stresses in the flow. If, when reaching the crystallization temperature, these chains remain elongated, they template the nucleation (acting as row nuclei) for the surrounding polymer melt and chain folded lamellar crystals to grow out from. These lamellar crystals have their growth direction normal to the nuclei formed from the elongated chains (Somani et al., 2005)
In extrusion-based 3D printing, independently of the plastic part design, the polymer in the liquid phase is forced to pass through a restricting die (nozzle) with a certain length-to-diameter ratio (L/D). Even considering that the extrudate swells at the exit of the extruder (Wang and de Vicente, 2012), the resultant strand diameter is mainly defined by the nozzle diameter, and consequently, it defines the printing resolution, as observed in Figure 4

respectively correspond to the melt in the reservoir and the deposited extrudate along the print
Shear stresses are applied in order to force the melt to pass through a constricted zone. For semicrystalline polymers (as it is illustrated in Figure 4), this condition induces the elongation of the larger chains (Rubinstein and Colby, 2003), which can generate flow-induced oriented structures such as the shish-kebab arrangements presented in Figure 3
this results in a higher proportion of crystalline to amorphous material
These higher levels of preferred molecular alignment are expected to be translated into having a significant impact on the mechanical properties of the manufactured part
3D printed objects can be mapped to be much stiffer in the longitudinal axis of the extruded strands
contrasting with a typical isotropic structure regularly obtained
the samples correspond to the in-situ produced extrudates of semicrystalline thermoplastic
the trials were performed with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) from Repsol
with a melt flow index of 7.5 g/10 min
For the realization of the morphology analysis, the X-ray scattering was performed with synchrotron radiation, similarly to what has been performed by Mitchell, et al. (Pople et al., 1996); utilizing an especially developed apparatus, in this case, to replicate the extrusion-based 3D printer operation at the beamline. The facilities and the equipment are followingly described in Section 2.2.1; Section 2.2.2
Small and wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements were performed at the ALBA Synchrotron Light Source in Barcelona (Spain), using the NCD-SWEET Beamline (González et al., 2018)
This beamline has equipment for the capture of SAXS and WAXS patterns simultaneously
The SAXS patterns were obtained in a Q-range from 0.002 Å−1 to 0.125 Å−1 and the WAXS patterns from 1.0 Å−1 to 3 Å−1
The SAXS Detector is a Pilatus3 S 1M system from DECTRIS
The X-ray photon absorption in the detector leads to the formation of electron-hole pairs and a charge proportional to the photon energy
The Pilatus system is constituted by an arranged set of silicon sensors
approximately ∼7% of the detector is intrinsically inactive (this unutilized zone appears as a black stripes grid in the intensity recordings)
it is detected and processed by the pixel readout system
and the effective pixel has a dynamic range of 20 bits and a size of 172 × 172 μm2
In order to prevent the saturation and damage of the detector
a beam stop is placed in front of the detector to absorb the zero-angle transmitted beam
The sample to SAXS detector distance was 7.27 m with an incident X-ray wavelength of 1 Å
The detector orientation and sample-to-detector distance were calibrated using the well-known standard silver behenate
Where n = 0,2,4,6,8 … Only the even orders are required due to the intrinsic inversion centre present in the diffraction pattern of a weakly absorbing material
The n = 0 is the component which represents the scattering from an equivalent sample without any preferred orientation
n = 2 is the first anisotropic pattern and values of <P2n > correspond to the Herman’s orientation parameter
in a scattering pattern from a sample with a high level of preferred orientation
are required to fully described the scattering and the orientation distribution function
these spherical harmonics are orthogonal functions and a knowledge of one does not depend on the knowledge of the others
For samples with a lower level of preferred orientation only components up to n = 8 will be required
This equation describes the orientation distribution function of the normal vectors to the lamellar crystals (Q)
The first component < P2n> is defined as the orientation parameter
on a scale from 0 to 1 the level of anisotropy of the polymer morphology: if < P2n>=0
then the morphology is isotropic; if < P2n>=1
then the crystals share the same alignment

this equipment simulates extrusion-based 3D printing along a moving platform
with a theoretically infinite path in a single deposition direction (for a wider testing window)
This system is adjustable in the cartesian axis and uses a single extruder with a dual channel screw to push the polymer melt through a needle with a high length-to-diameter ratio (L/D ≈ 36)
The FGF extruder utilized has a similar design to the one used in the bioextruder (Almeida et al., 2010) (also developed by a team of CDRSP-Polytechnic of Leiria), and it corresponds to the configuration c) in Figure 1
it contains an attached material reservoir and three independent zones of temperature control
The communication with a microcontroller board enables the remote operation of the apparatus
more specifically the control of the collector velocity (write/print speed)
extruder screw rotation velocity (extrusion rate)
Figure 6 is a representation of the experimental assembly with the 3D printer mounted on the beamline platform
together with the SAXS and WAXS detectors to the scales of observation: lamellae morphology (∼100 Å) and crystalline structures (∼10 Å)

The evaluation of the LDPE crystallization was performed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) with a PerkinElmer STA 6000 thermal analyzer. Samples were heated from 30°C to 150°C at a rate of 10°C/min. A steady state at the maximum temperature was maintained for 5 min, followed by cooling back to 30°C at a rate of 5°C/min. The final cooling stage is represented in Figure 8

the onset of crystallization occurs at 94.2°C while the maximum rate of crystallization is observed to be at a temperature of 90.2°C
Notice that the material which has been extruded may start to crystallize at a higher temperature than the observed with the quiescent material
due to the presence of flow-induced row nuclei
In this section, the results of the in-situ small and wide X-ray scattering analysis are presented. Figures 9A–C shows the recorded SAXS scattering patterns of the filaments extruded with different write speeds (print speeds)
maintaining the extrusion temperature and rate

These SAXS patterns correspond to the point just before the build platform and are typical for a semicrystalline polymer. Figure 9A shows a practically isotropic ring, indicating an isotropic distribution of the lamellar crystals. On the other hand, Figure 9C exhibits a highly anisotropic distribution of scattering suggesting a higher degree of order of lamellar crystals. Figure 9B corresponds to an intermediate write speed
and it comprises both isotropic and highly anisotropic scatterings
The WAXS pattern presented in Figure 10 was recorded in the same instant as Figure 9C SAXS pattern
corresponding to the arcs observed from right to left
the development of an anisotropic morphology is indicated by the variation of the peaks’ intensity in the azimuthal range

It is noticed that the anisotropy revealed in the WAXS pattern is less pronounced than the one observed with SAXS
This observation underlines the challenge of using wide-angle X-ray scattering to assess the orientation of structures in semicrystalline polymers
the twisted arrangement of chain-folded lamellar crystals is commonly observed
the preferred orientation of the lamellar crystals cannot be evaluated simply from WAXS patterns
The preferred level of orientation of the lamellar crystals, the results are shown in Figure 11. The vertical axis corresponds to the orientation parameter < P2n>, obtained through Eq. 1
this parameter can assume values from 0 to 1
respectively corresponding to a scale from completely isotropic to anisotropic morphology (uniform orientation of the crystalline structures)

the temperatures of the 3 main zones of the extruder (feeder

The left-hand plot corresponds to the variation of the preferred orientation level with the collector velocity (maintaining the extrusion rate value)
The plot at the right corresponds to the variation of <P2n> with the extrusion rate (at constant values of collector velocity)
Notice that printing speed is represented by the collector main roll rotation velocity given by the product of its angular velocity and radius
In order to display any correlations between the preferred molecular orientation and extrusion and collector velocities, the three-dimensional plot shown Figure 12 was prepared, with the combined data from both plots in Figure 11

it is possible to observe the final anisotropy level in LDPE
establishing a briefer correlation with both the extrusion and writing/print speeds (this one represented by the collector velocity)
The dark blue corresponds to the isotropic zone
and the yellow zones correspond to the higher anisotropy levels
the level of preferred orientation of the chain folded lamellar crystals is directly proportional to the collector velocity (write/print speed) and inversely proportional to the extrusion rate
In practice, during manufacturing, this is represented by a more pronounced anisotropy value (associated with higher elastic modulus) (da Silva et al., 2022) is reached while extruding a smaller amount of material along the same or a bigger path
This can be translated as a thinning of the deposited filament
Particular attention has to be given to the faster cooling rates and the thinning of the extrudate, once it may compromise, in a counter-productive way, the interlayer adhesion, as well as the adhesion between subsequently deposited filaments. Consequently, it may affect the mechanical properties and behavior of the generated part (Geng et al., 2019)
This condition has to be considered in advance
slicing software provides these correlations in order to accomplish the intended geometries
if the design for additive manufacturing strategy incorporates this thinning
another solution should be the revision of the number of cycles/scans to fulfill a given length/width
it is not clearly proven that faster deposition movements of the extrudate should consist of accelerated production
at some other level of process optimization
if the achievement of a higher level of anisotropy in semicrystalline polymers can be promptly or fully associated with more agile production cycles
The use of higher extrusion speed doesn’t necessarily imply a higher manufacturing pace and may limit the overall rate of production
new slicing strategies could be applied in order to optimize the anisotropy and
obtain well-defined stiffer and softer zones
while maintaining a relatively normal to fast-paced production
The main conclusion of the present work is that the adjustment of 3D printing parameters (nozzle temperature
extrusion rate and write speed) can be utilized strategically to affect the material morphology and structure along the fabrication of an object
Exploring the levels of preferred orientation of the lamellar crystals

controlling the core parameters of 3D printing induces changes in the material structure and morphology of semicrystalline polymers like LDPE
it is predicted that will affect the functionality of the printed part
allowing the enhancement of mechanical properties in a localized way
more than reproducing a certain desired shape
it is believed that 3D printing may help develop new degrees of function for even more complex parts
The results obtained in this work will be typical for all semicrystalline polymers
but the particular details of the correlations will depend on the polymer type
the molecular weight and characteristics of the 3D printing systems used
including the temperature of the extrusion and the L/D ratio of the extrusion die
future works include studies about the rheological behavior
and the influence of other variables such as the extrudate temperature
the main challenge will consist of the implementation of the correlated data into a manufacturing system where the properties of the materials will be locally assigned along with the digital definition of the objects to produce
the active control of the manufacturing process
envisioning the optimization of the parts will depend on the implementation of new strategies of slicing
and the development of software to run the 3D printing process in accordance with the material design strategies

The most common genetic cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a hexanucleotide expansion in the chromosome 9 open reading frame 72 gene (C9ORF72)
This hexanucleotide expansion consists of GGGGCC (G4C2) repeats that have been implicated to lead to three main modes of disease pathology: loss of function of the C9ORF72 protein
and the production of dipeptide repeat proteins (DPRs) through repeat-associated non-AUG (RAN) translation
Five different DPRs are currently known to be formed: glycine–alanine (GA) and glycine–arginine (GR) from the sense strand
and proline–arginine (PR) from the antisense strand
and glycine–proline (GP) from both strands
The exact contribution of each DPR to disease pathology is currently under intense scrutiny and is still poorly understood
recent advances in both neuropathological and cellular studies have provided us with clues enabling us to better understand the effect of individual DPRs on disease pathogenesis
we compile the current knowledge of specific DPR involvement on disease development and highlight recent advances
such as the impact of arginine-rich DPRs on nucleolar protein quality control
the correlation of poly-GR with neurodegeneration
and the possible involvement of chimeric DPR species
we discuss recent findings regarding the mechanisms of RAN translation
C9ORF72 repeat associated disease mechanisms
The G4C2 repeat expansion can cause C9ORF72 ALS/FTD through three proposed mechanisms
(B) RNA foci formation resulting in sequestration of different RNA binding proteins
(C) Accumulation of dipeptide repeat proteins (DPRs) generated through RAN translation
The third mechanism is a GOF due to the formation and accumulation of DPRs via repeat-associated non-AUG (RAN) translation of the hexanucleotide repeat sequences from both sense and antisense strands (reviewed by Freibaum and Taylor, 2017) (elaborated in this review)
The involvement of both LOF and GOF in C9ORF72 ALS/FTD pathophysiology has been comprehensively investigated using different model systems
Although more than one of these mechanisms may contribute to C9ORF72 ALS/FTD pathology
the presence of DPRs in neurons implies that they likely play a crucial role in disease progression
the precise involvement of each DPR species in C9ORF72 ALS/FTD pathogenesis remains unresolved
further complicated by a recent finding implicating chimeric DPRs (cDPRs) in C9ORF72 ALS/FTD pathology
This review compiles the current knowledge about different DPRs and the recently identified cDPRs and discusses their relative contribution to C9ORF72 ALS/FTD pathogenesis
despite being the most readily detected DPR in inclusions
it is not clear whether poly-GA is toxic at physiologically relevant levels
This delocalization could not be observed with NPM1 and its physiological binding partners capable of inducing the LLPS of NPM1
As NPM1 is heavily involved in ribosome biogenesis and transport
hence interfering with NPM1’s ability to fulfill its physiological functions
could significantly contribute to DPR-mediated toxicity
and most recently disruption of the nucleolar protein quality machinery through the interaction with NPM1
more evidence is required to determine the exact roles the arginine-containing DPRs poly-GR and poly-PR play in the development of the ALS phenotype in vivo
Summarizing the detection of DPRs in different human brain regions according to various neuropathological studies examining postmortem brain tissue
which suggests that DPR-related toxicity may be responsible for the early progression of the disease
The exact role DPRs play in shaping the course of events leading to neurodegeneration thus remains elusive and cannot be satisfyingly answered by solely analyzing postmortem tissue from C9ORF72 ALS/FTD patients
Proposed mechanism for the formation of different dipeptide repeat proteins (DPRs) through the G4C2 repeat expansion in the C9ORF72 gene
Both sense and antisense strands can be translated through CUG-initiated
and RAN mediated translation resulting in the formation of different DPRs
cDPRs are proposed to occur because of ribosomal frameshifting or spontaneous mutations in the G4C2 repeat expansion
X denotes aminoacids present in N- or C- terminus of DPRs
suggesting that poly-GP produced from either the sense or the antisense strand could have different biochemical properties and interacting partners
DPRs (and G4C2 RNA) can not only induce the formation of stress granules but also enhance RAN translation and thus their own production
resulting in a feed-forward mechanism mediated by the phosphorylation of eIF2α
simultaneous inhibition of global protein synthesis might indeed also apply to proteins involved in the degradation of DPRs
it is yet to be fully explored how exactly phosphorylation of eIF2α affects the alternative translation initiation mechanisms that are proposed to enhance RAN translation
and which form of stress and kinases involved have the most profound effect on RAN translation
it remains undetermined by which mechanism the PKR pathway can independently induce RAN translation and to what extent metformin and other PKR inhibitors would be viable therapeutic options for patients with C9ORF72 ALS/FTD
More extensive studies will be needed to determine how effective both inhibiting DPR-induced stress and/or targeting different genes important for RAN translation with ASOs will be
which potential side effects these treatment options may have
other therapeutic targets might revolve around the mitigation of DPR load by directly targeting the individual species
of the exact nature and effects of these individual DPR species is highly dynamic as researchers try to unravel the novel mechanisms by which they induce toxicity
Although it is accepted that specific DPR species have toxic effects in cellular and animal models
their precise contribution to C9ORF72-associated disease progression is still disputed
C9ORF72 ALS/FTD patients are likely to express all DPRs and not only a single specific DPR
it is essential to understand how individual DPRs may interact with each other at physiologically relevant levels to promote disease pathology
this is currently an underexplored area of the C9ORF72-associated ALS/FTD field
it still needs to be unequivocally proven that indeed cDPR species are translated in C9ORF72 ALS/FTD patients and then further determined to what extent these species may contribute to the total disease burden
evidence suggests that individual DPRs interact with each other and that this may affect disease pathology
future work should also consider both C and N-terminus amino acids to more accurately portray the role of each DPR in C9ORF72 ALS/FTD pathogenesis
to better understand how DPRs contribute to disease
future research should focus on disease models that express multiple DPRs
ideally at physiologically relevant levels
the development of such models still requires further advances in our current understanding of RAN translation to estimate the precise translated levels of different DPRs in patients

On Friday, a bloodless bullfight is scheduled at 7 p.m. at the TDES Hall grounds. Featured bullfighters are Joe Correia, Jorge Hernandez and Manuel Telles Bastos. Tickets are $20.
The Rosary will be recited daily at 7 p.m. until Saturday, when the crowning of this year’s celebration queen will take place. After the Rosary, there will be a dance and Cantoria, featuring singers Joao Pinheiro, Joao Rodrigues, Manuel do Santos, Adelino Toledo, Jose Esteves, and guitar players Helder Esteves, Michael Vieira, Rafael Ormonde and Joao Gravito.
On Sunday, the festivities begin at 10:45 a.m. with a procession from the hall to St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 125 E. Pleasant Ave., for 11:45 a.m. Mass. The first serving of sopas will be at 11 a.m., with an auction to follow at 1 p.m. and a second sopas serving at 7 p.m.
Sunday’s festivities continue with a performance from Folklore Group of Tulare at 7:30 p.m. and a grand march at 8:30 p.m. with a dance featuring DJ Tony Nunes.
On Monday, there’s vacada at 7 p.m. at the Hall grounds with a dance to follow featuring DJ Dennis Rebelo.
The year’s celebration queen is Madison Esteves, 14, daughter of Michael and Gina Esteves. She’s a freshman at El Diamante High School in Visalia.
Her attendants are Mikayla Esteves, 15, daughter of David and Diane Esteves and a sophomore at Redwood High School; and Chastine Gist, 14, daughter of Marrs and Cindy Gist and an eighth grade student at Sundale School.
The Junior Queen is Caitlin Mendes, 10, daughter of Joe and Monica Mendes and a fourth grade student at Central Valley Christian.
Her attendants are Summer Parreira, 9, and daughter of Michael and Danielle Parreira and a third grade student at Mission Valley School; and Bella Valadao, 10, daughter of Eddie and April Valadao and a fourth grade student at St. Rose McCarthy Catholic School.
The celebration’s officers are Rosemary and Brian Caso, president; Armando and Jacqueline Da Silva, vice president; Darren and Bethany Rebelo, treasurer; and Mark and Sandra Nunes, secretary.

Value of forestry production hit a reacord R$30.1 billion
with an increase of 27.1% and production in 4,884 municipalities
Value of silviculture production is still above that of wild crop harvesting
Silviculture has been on an upward trend since 2020 (an increase of 21.3% from 2019)
Wild crop harvesting advanced 31.5% and reached R$6.2 billion a value of production

“Forestry products increased significantly in value in 2021
That has to do with the rise of the dollar and to the resumption of industrial production
The most significant increase was that of value of forestry production (27.1%)
Most of that (79.3%) comes from silviculture
whereas wild crop harvesting accounts for 20.7%,” says Carlos Alfredo Guedes

Lindia remembers the volcanic ash raining down
Residents of the former whaling village of Capelo in Faial

trying their best to protect themselves from the darkness that covered the sun
their land and their sustenance by the time the yearlong eruption of the Capelinhos volcano subsided and the island grew by a few acres
Almost everybody ended up having a better life because of the volcano
The Capelinhos volcano gave rise to a third wave of Azorean immigration to the United States
thanks to the Azorean Refugee Act of 1958 spearheaded by then-Sens
Other Azoreans who took advantage of the special legislation and the softer immigration laws followed suit during the 1960s and 1970s
As a popular high school student involved in sailing
Pinheiro had dreams of attending college and had no plans to leave the Azores
But the volcano ruined the island's mostly agricultural and seafaring economy
after ash covered the dock where Azorean whalers made their living
"Our immigration was different from the other types of immigration
"I ended up staying here and I'm glad that I did," he said
The volcano started slowly just off the coast of Capelo
but soon erupted in spectacular explosions reaching more than 3,000 feet high
the volcano experienced almost all kinds of volcanic behavior

The Slovak Spectator spoke to Ambassador Niza Pinheiro
who arrived here in 2010 and sees much potential for building bridges between Portugal and Slovakia
links between Portuguese and Slovak academia and businesses
and tourism potential between the two countries
The Slovak Spectator (TSS): Portugal has some of Europe’s sunniest areas
which has understandably resulted in the rapid growth of the use of solar power in Portugal
What are the main challenges that Portugal faces in the area of renewable energy?Joao Luís Niza Pinheiro (NP): Renewable energy is something that has been at the centre of our attention especially in the past decade
given the fact that Portugal has a quite high – currently around 77 percent – energy dependence on external resources
sufficient amounts of coal and nuclear energy has been excluded
so it is crucial for us to pursue an adequate energy mix
namely balancing it with renewable resources developed in our territory
bearing in mind the situation in the world as well environmental considerations
we have subscribed to the 20-20-20 targets
at attaining 31 percent of the primary energy in that horizon
and in energy efficiency reducing our energy consumption by 25 percent by the same time
with our public sector setting an example by reaching a reduction of 30 percent
but achieving them will reduce Portugal’s energy dependence as well as keeping our country at the forefront of the European Union in the use of renewable energies
My Government sees the role of this sector as one of the motors for the competitive advantage of Portugal
I would use recent figures released by Eurostat to illustrate that we are on a good track to achieving those targets: the EU average in renewable energy stood at 12.4 percent of total energy consumption in 2010
this should result in lower dependence on oil
which is the largest source of energy in Portugal
TSS: Slovakia has been trying for the past two decades to forge better links between the needs of the labour market and academia and is now
a country with a rich university heritage?NP: Yes
Portugal has a rich university heritage which goes back to 1290
when King Denis founded and granted academic autonomy to the University of Coimbra
one of the three oldest universities in Europe
This autonomy became an essential characteristic of our system
Later the University of Évora emerged in the 16th century
marking an important landmark in our university system up to the 20th century
when the modern University of Lisbon and the University of Porto were established as public institutions
In the early 1970s a number of other public and private universities were set up
Yet the whole network has shown a paramount interest in research and interaction with Portuguese enterprises
The network was completed by polytechnic institutes
which further strengthened the links between businesses and academia
The direct links between the universities and businesses include research centres as well as conducting applied research through contracts with individual firms
Then research teams from the universities participate in so-called ‘collective research projects’ financed by public funds
Specialised units known as incubators to promote start-ups for research done in universities are yet another form of link
a certain pragmatic philosophy behind these links between academia and businesses
these links have not always been this strong and it was the variety and the increasing development in the academia approach and the growing power of the private sector in Portugal
alongside with the continuous internationalisation of Portuguese firms which allowed us to fully realise how useful these links can be and how they can work for the benefit of the whole country
there is an important number of starting enterprises which come from this connection
are directly emerging from these combined forces
which puts them in the forefront of innovation and competitiveness in the economy
This is actually one of the areas where I see great potential for cooperation between Slovakia and Portugal
and we can mutually learn from each other: you live in a different part of Europe and your economy is doing very well and I think together we can explore interesting ways of bringing academia and the private sector together
TSS: The financial crisis has seriously impacted your homeland and in 2011 Portugal became the third EU country after Greece and Ireland to ask for a financial bailout
your government has already introduced a package of reforms
What are its main pillars and how did the population receive them?NP: The global economic crisis in 2008 to 2009 has been underestimated at a global level
which is the primary source of our difficulties
The assistance programme negotiated with Portugal is a comprehensive and vast one
based on three pillars: budget consolidation; reduction of indebtedness of the economy and reinforcement of the stability of the financial system; and
structural reforms to create conditions for more competitiveness of the economy and sustainable development
Four review joint missions of the European Commission
the ECB and the IMF have extensively scrutinised its implementation and all them have
concluded that there is compliance with the goals
The Government has continuously declared itself fully committed to the targets and most of the Opposition
while criticising some of the aspects of the programme
thus allowing for a clear and strong supportive majority in Parliament
although severely hit by a series of measures
is enduring them without public unrest of the type that we have seen for much less reason in the last two years in some other member states
In Portugal we witnessed no riots or buildings on fire
although there were general strikes and demonstrations – but these did not really require police intervention and meant that the population freely expressed its feelings
but they are expected to be more visible during the very next years
It would be very time-consuming to go in detail
I will just select two of them: we came from a budget deficit of around 9 percent and reduced it
which is a huge consolidation; a considerable plan of privatisations is underway and the first ones are done
TSS: Have recent problems within the eurozone as well as the related austerity measures affected the public’s attitude towards the European Union
Is there any significant growth in euroscepticism in your homeland?NP: In April I read a piece in Financial Times which suggested that despite the sacrifices
the mood of the Portuguese towards the European Union is not showing any fundamental change
referring to the fact that only 16 to 18 percent of the population opposed the current developments in the EU
suggested that 70 percent of the Portuguese feel themselves European citizens and say that Portugal must stay in the eurozone
although concerning the specific issue of austerity
only 36.5 percent of the population agrees with the measures required by Brussels
I think the EU is deeply ingrained in the lifestyle and thinking of the Portuguese people and I do not foresee any dramatic change
In fact euroscepticism has no party representation in Portugal
TSS: Could you please describe the current state of economic cooperation between Portugal and Slovakia?NP: Our business links are rather recent: Slovakia has been present in Portugal since the country’s accession to the European Union and we have been present in Slovakia since 2005
I am only the second resident ambassador in Slovakia
Slovakia is well-positioned as a destination for Portuguese exports of goods and has made it into the 50 top countries
Slovakia ranks 40th in the Portuguese imports
Over the past five years the trade balance in goods has always been positive for Slovakia
while positive for Portugal in the trade balance in services
TSS: Do you think that the investment potential between Slovakia and Portugal has been fully explored
What are the areas where you see some potential for cooperation between the two countries?NP: Foreign direct investment from Slovakia to Portugal has been very limited and of course we would like to have more investment from Slovakia
We follow the same rules and pay with the same currency and have a very similar system of commercial policies
Among the limitations is perhaps that both countries are trying to attract direct foreign investment
although of course we are focusing on different markets from Slovakia
which is why we are organising various business missions
some three months ago the Slovak Chamber of Commerce and Industry took a business mission to Portugal
where it co-operates with the Portuguese Industrial Association
Your automotive sector is interesting since it is a well-developed sector in Portugal too; among others we have Volkswagen
So one of the potential areas for increased business could be for sub-suppliers of parts and accessories for vehicles
Also in electronic services: when you think about e-government or electronic procurement
our firms have solutions that already moved Portugal into the international arena
and I see a potential for the two countries to work closer together in these areas
there is the area of scientific and technological cooperation
since my country has strongly invested in areas such as biomedical sciences
communication and information technologies
and this has moved us to the European vanguard
for example the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory
one of the best-equipped institutes in Europe
and thus Slovakia could also benefit from such an area of cooperation
So there are tools for exchanging researchers
some of this cooperation is already happening: we have some 12 projects underway with Slovakia and 53 research projects were financed by the 7th framework programme of the EU

How do you assess the interest of Slovaks in Portugal
the Portuguese language and the culture of your homeland?NP: I was pleasantly surprised after I found out that there is a real interest in Bratislava
A course of Portuguese language and Portuguese culture exists since some years at Comenius University
A Portuguese lecturer paid by Portugal is directing it and about 50-90 people might be enrolled every year
showed an interest in starting Portuguese courses
while the training would be directed at more specific economic terminology
which named itself the Portuguese Institute and emerged from local people’s need to be in contact with our language
TSS: How do you assess the tourism potential between the two countries and what do you think Slovakia has to offer Portuguese tourists?NP: There is potential
There is now a daily direct flight from Vienna to Portugal
which is convenient since it takes only about three hours to get to Lisbon
Of course I would like to see more Slovaks visiting my homeland and probably they are still not completely aware of what we can offer them
This is a role mainly for tourism agencies on both sides
Since the purchasing power of Slovaks is getting close to the EU average
perhaps they will be able to travel more and Portugal will be on their list of countries
has excellent hotelier schools and we could cooperate by providing training in them
In Slovakia now the golf sector is growing
which is very interesting for the Portuguese as we are now one of the top countries in Europe for golf
The Portuguese might also be interested in skiing in the High Tatras
since you have competitive prices in your skiing stations
But without a doubt we do need to increasingly discover each other
because more exposure of the peoples to each other through direct visits will also help integration at the European level
