This sober but compelling study of the man who radically transformed treatment at an Algerian hospital explores the link between mental illness and imperialist violence
Read moreFanon’s achievements during his tenure are recounted in an episodic
From incorporating creative and athletic activities as a part of therapy to implementing more humane treatments for the Indigenous patients
were met with disapproval from some of his white French colleagues
Zahzah explores such tensions – as well as Fanon’s relationship with the patients – primarily through conversation; much of the narrative is made of discussion or consultation scenes
Even with Alexandre Desane’s grounding presence in the lead role
the ubiquitousness of these compositions results in stylistic monotony – a stark contrast to Fanon’s famously incendiary writing
But what emerges from these sequences is the strong link between imperialist violence
imperialism is the disease that infects the souls of those living in occupied territories
An understanding of this relationship is the driving force behind Fanon’s psychiatry practice and political activity
the latter of which is touched on but not dealt with in depth here
Though not quite as exhaustive as its lengthy title would suggest
this film remains a compelling study of a rarely portrayed figure
and of the dehumanisation inflicted by French colonial psychiatry
True Chronicles of the Blida Joinville Psychiatric Hospital in the Last Century, when Dr Frantz Fanon Was Head of the Fifth Ward between 1953 and 1956 is at the ICA, London

Situated beneath the famous road, this long strip of land had become derelict over the years. So the Ile-de-France municipality decided to take action. In the spring of 2025, this former vast unused area under the viaduct will open its doors to the public, who will be able to discover an open-air gallery dedicated to street art
While the former draws its inspiration from nature to create works combining warm colors
the latter stands out for its unique"Iconosaik" style
A little further on, our eye is quickly drawn to Huge's incredible fresco
The Swedish-born artist is known for his photorealistic helium balloon style
Huge wrote "LE SPOT" in traditional letters
We continue our tour and discover murals by PichiAvo, the famous Spanish-Mexican duo, Piet Rodriguez and WOSKerski
The London-based urban artist has created two incredible realistic-style works for LE SPOT:"Laundry day" and"Le Eggsplosion"
which can even be seen from the Quai de Polangis
The trompe-l'oeil fresco by Portuguese artist Vile
set against the backdrop of the surrounding biodiversity
And let's not forget Astro's impressive work
was tasked with painting the entire ceiling beneath the freeway
A huge fresco that took a month to complete and mobilized a total of four people
with 400 planted specimens and 30,000 plans between Quai de Polangis and Avenue Jean Estienne d'Orves
To create an " urban lung" for families and residents of Joinville-le-Pont
Finally, because LE SPOT aims to be a place dedicated to young people, the Ile-de-France site will also feature sports areas, including a skatepark, two " pump tracks " for BMX enthusiasts, a huge " Parkour " area, a climbing course as well as two 3x3 basketball courts and two 5x5 soccer fields. These sports areas are scheduled for completion in early 2025. They will be built by Playgones
a company specializing in the installation of urban sports furniture
with whom Notorious Brand has worked closely to harmonize the colors of the modules and pitches with the various works of art on the site
The new sports and leisure area will be open to all. It " embodies the city's strong commitment to the vitality and well-being of its residents. [...] In keeping with the spirit of the times, this new facility is much more than just a place to practice sports: it's a place for sharing and conviviality, conducive to the creation of links between generations and the general public," explains the town on its website

– Yulee High School is on the hunt for a new principal after the Nassau County School District said it will not be reassigning Yvon Joinville to the position next year
He will officially leave the job on June 30
The school district did not provide a reason for the release of the principal
and Joinville did not respond to our requests for comment
In October, Joinville was heavily criticized by some parents for his response to a video that was circulated on social media showing two teenage boys -- one wearing a white hood -- using racial slurs
players on the school’s football team had planned to protest the treatment of Black students by sitting out of the school’s homecoming football game
The principal’s job posting will be available through Friday, and a district spokesperson said a new principal will be appointed in the coming weeks.

Brazil doesn’t have as strong a relationship with Instagram as other parts of the globe. Here, Facebook has a grip on society like nowhere else, and few Instagram accounts express Joinville as well as, ironically, the local newspaper’s account
which shows a more intimate view of the city than most personal accounts
In 2014, the city was (and still is, to a lesser degree) overtaken by a heated debate over bus lanes
Parents at one of Joinville’s private schools were using one of the most important bus lanes in the city for parking space
so they could pick their kids up hassle-free
And this was even after city hall built a special overpass for that exact purpose in 1998
Students and parents refused to use the overpass and a civil movement
since the school came before the lane and donated the land for the street
civil activists and the school went to court over whether or not the school had the right to park in the bus lane
At the height of the controversy, the school was adamant in refusing any solutions other than “removing the bus lane from our parking space”. In a judicial tug-of-war, the school lost the case, went to a higher court and got a court order preserving the parking
The court order got repealed by another judge and in the end the surreal parking space inside a bus lane was removed

Photograph: Aline SeitenfusA very ugly representation of the worst problem in our local public space – and very nearly falling apart – is the old Migrant’s Hotel in Rua XV de Novembro
It is an example of the all-too-common practice of leaving historic buildings to rot so they can be torn down to create space for new and “better” architecture
Since legislation forbids the demolition of known historical buildings
it’s not unusual for owners to leave them to decompose like this
Joinville’s unlikely city mascot – a seven-foot-long alligator – was found dead
floating in the Cachoeira River in May 2015
While a seemingly a trivial affair (a dead animal in a city river is not usually a huge historical event for most cities)
but for the last 15 years the reptile was one of the incentives to reduce pollution on the river
there aren’t many cities who can claim to have a live alligator as their mascot
The sad news was followed by a report showing that there are far more alligators on the river than just Fritz and his two mates
and sightings of other gators in the river lead to doubts over the death of the beloved mascot

While the National Immigration and Colonisation Museum is a must-see

Poor lighting make the beautiful Palm Street one of the most crime-ridden areas of the city centre after dark
For most locals, Joinville is a city of two things: industry, and more industry. But for most outsiders and especially for a week and a half per year, Joinville shows its true colours and its real talent: dancing. Joinville hosts the only Bolshoi Ballet School outside Russia and the world’s largest dance festival, hosted yearly in late July, the Festival de Dança de Joinville hosts over 6,000 dancers in various styles
from the classics to modern street and urban dancing
The festival has taken place annually since 1985
and in 2005 the festival was honoured as the largest in the world by the Guinness Book of Records
We are slowly improving our city’s green credentials
the Cachoeira River might be the best example of how Joinville is cleaning itself up and changing the old ways of the past
with new legislation against chemical pollution
changes in sewage treatment (which rose from less than 3% of the city in 1999 to 40% today) and public awareness
spurred on in part by our former reptilian mascot
the old chemical smell near its banks has been replaced by a (still terrible) earthy odour
and the formerly toxic waterway now hosts schools of fish
The rest of Joinville has your average urban fragrance
except when it rains – then the whole city has a peculiar earthy pong that isn’t quite as unpleasant as the river’s smell
but your nostrils will certainly notice it

In order to reconstruct past environmental conditions along the north-eastern Antarctic Peninsula
onlap as seen in ground-penetrating radar reflection profiles and ice-rafted debris on a set of 36 raised beaches developed over the last ~7.7 ± 0.9 ka on Joinville Island
The most pronounced changes in beach character occur at ~2.7–3.0 ka
there appears to have been a reintroduction of less rounded material
the development of stratification within individual beach ridges
an introduction of seaweed and limpets to the beach deposits
a change in clast provenance (although slightly earlier than the change in cobble roundness) and a shallowing of the overall beach plain slope
Prolonged cooling associated with the Neoglacial period may have contributed to these changes
as the readvance of glaciers could have changed the provenance of the beach deposits and introduced more material
leading to the change in roundness of the beach cobbles and the overall slope of the beach plain
This study suggests that late Holocene environmental change left a measurable impact on the coastal zone of Antarctica
changes in their characteristics may reflect environmental changes occurring within the coastal zone through the Holocene

Joinville Island GPS and tide data are reported in Zurbuchen & Simms (Reference Zurbuchen and Simms2019). Elevation and coordinate data were obtained using a UNAVCO Trimble Net R9 receiver global navigation satellite system (GNSS) base station and Trimble 5700 GPS/GNSS receiver. Upon failure of the local base station, the O'Higgins permanent GPS station (www.sonel.org
located ~115 km away from Joinville Island
Beach-ridge profiles were obtained from kinematic-mode GPS surveys across the crest of each beach ridge
which each have three static elevation points due to the presence of wildlife
GPS data were processed in Trimble Business Center with horizontal and vertical precisions of ~0.25 m
Elevations were converted to mean sea level using 2 days of data from a locally deployed Valeport 740 Portable Water Level Recorder (tide gauge) matched to the tide gauge at Bahia Esperanza ~50 km away
Approximately 2.5 km of GPR profiles were collected across the beaches of Tay Head using a Sensors and Software pulseEkko Pro with a 200 MHz antenna (Fig. 2; Zurbuchen & Simms Reference Zurbuchen and Simms2019)
Lines were predominantly collected shore-normal
with four additional shore-parallel profiles collected to help tie the other profiles together
The unshielded antenna was mounted on a custom-built cart and manually pulled across the beaches
Processing of the GPR profiles included a topographic correction
DeWow (a proprietary processing algorithm) and a depth-varying gain
all conducted using EkkoDeluxe and Kingdom Suite software
A velocity of 0.190 m/ns was used based on a common midpoint survey conducted at the site
which were derived using a Bayesian progradation model for the beach-ridge age assignments
All ages in this study are given in calibrated years or thousands of years before present (the present being 1950)

who demonstrated that this layer was reset completely after 1 h of daylight exposure
The target slices were crushed by hand using a mortar and pestle in order to avoid pressures that could erase the luminescence signal
The carefully ground cobble grains and sediment from additional sandy deposits were prepared according to the following procedures: the material was sieved for grain sizes 63–250 μm
The grains were then washed in 10% HCl and 27% H2O2 to remove carbonate and organic material contaminates
The remaining sediment from sand and cobble samples was density separated with lithium polytungstate liquid (LST) at specific gravities of 2.75
potassium and sodium feldspars and heavy and light grains
The heavy and light grains were saved and stored away
whereas the remaining quartz and feldspar grains were etched using hydrofluoric acid (48% HF for 40 min for quartz and 10% HF for 15 min for feldspars)
Some samples had only little material in the feldspar fraction
it was not possible to separate sodium and potassium feldspars
These samples were treated as ‘mixed’ feldspars

Graph illustrating the height and age of beaches dated using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and radiocarbon dating
Optically stimulated luminescence ages and sample properties
All samples labelled ‘JV-x’ are rock samples
Samples labelled SOSL-x are sediment samples
Minerals: for samples with sufficient materials
feldspars were separated into K-feldspar (< 2.58 SG) and Na-feldspar (> 2.58 SG)
the fraction < 2.62 SG was labelled as ‘mixed’ feldspars
For most mixed feldspars and K-feldspars this was the blue signal
whereas Na-feldspars were brighter in yellow
Grain size: the grain size was obtained after sifting of sediments or after crushing and sifting of rock slices
Beach height: the height of the beach in metres where the sample was collected
That leaves two ages that fit the general RSL trend of the younger radiocarbon-based chronology: JV-32
with an age of 5.1 ± 0.6 ka from beach 20 at an elevation of 7.7 m
with an age of 7.7 ± 0.9 ka from beach 29 at an elevation of 11.5 m
Assuming an average rate of beach formation of 175 years
based on the frequency of the lower 14C-dated beaches
the age of beach 31 is expected to be older than 5.8 ka
and accounting for hiatuses would probably make the section older
prolonged cooling associated with the Neoglacial time period could have increased sea-ice conditions and hindered clast rounding
but this did not close the sea off enough to prevent icebergs from landing on the shore
cooling may have driven localized glacier readvance (see below) and potentially increased sediment supply to the coast
An increased sediment supply could have led to the introduction of more angular beach clasts and a change in shoreline trajectory
leading to the lower slopes of the beach plain
The increase in low-silica rhyolite and the decrease in sandstone clasts with time on the beaches of Tay Head could be manifestations of a change in beach sediment provenance. Outcrops of the sandstone are located west of the three moraines or till sheets, whereas the low-silica rhyolite was present as dikes within low-grade, metamorphosed, fine-grained sedimentary rocks in the sea stacks and outcrops on the eastern side of Tay Head (Fig. 2)
The rocks within the westernmost M1 moraine behind beach 31 were dominantly sandstone
the sediment sources for the upper beaches (21–31) were most probably the moraine and sandstone outcrops to the east
eventually the sandstone sources were abandoned or swamped by materials from other parts of the peninsula
the dominant sediment source transitioned to the low-grade
fine-grained sedimentary rocks with the low-silica rhyolite dykes for the lower beaches
this transition does not align with changes in pebble roundness
indicating that processes other than just a source change caused the changes in pebble roundness
Although the age of the westernmost moraine M3 is unknown
we cannot rule out the possibility that M2 and M3 represent the same advance but with a very irregular margin
Changes in the sediment characteristics as revealed in GPR profiles
grain roundness and IRD within Holocene raised beaches on Joinville Island along the EAP were used to determine how the environmental history of the region is reflected within their deposits
A particularly well-developed set of 36 raised beaches is found on Tay Head on the southern side of Joinville Island
The lower 21 beaches are well stratified and better developed than the upper 15 beaches
which are unstratified and less contiguous
most beaches are found in sets of three to seven beach ridges separated from other beach-ridge sets by natural breaks in elevation without beach ridges
Grains on the raised beaches of Joinville Island show an overall increase in beach pebble roundness through time
whereas grain size shows no obvious pattern
the pebble roundness trend is interrupted at beaches 5
Beach 5 exhibits less and beach 28a exhibits more rounding than the general trend
The transition between beaches 15 and 14 indicates a sharp decrease in pebble roundness through time
in opposition to the overall pebble roundness trend
The change in roundness trend is also nearly concurrent with an inflection point in the overall slope of the beach plain and observable onlapping in GPR profiles
The lower 21 beaches contain prevalent seaweed mats and limpet shells
providing an excellent radiocarbon chronology
An attempt to date four of the lower radiocarbon-dated beaches and five of the upper beaches with 21 OSL ages from cobble surfaces as well as more traditional sand grains was met with mixed success
which marked a transition in pebble roundness of the beaches as well as a lowering of the overall beach plain slope
coincides with the onset of the Neoglacial time period of ~2.5–3.0 ka
Less rounding of sediments within the ~1.0 ka beach 5
which also had the most OPPs (interpreted as representing IRD) of any beach on Joinville Island
could be explained by a period marked by shorter open water seasons and an increase in sea ice
whereas the opposite could hold true for beach 28a of ~7.4 ka
This study suggests Holocene environmental changes left a measurable impact on the coastal zones of Antarctica

Haitian culture was all around Alain Joinville when he was growing up in Flatbush
He could hear Haitian Creole music when he and his family would go shopping on the weekend
in the Haitian restaurants scattered off Flatbush Avenue and at home
where his mom would speak to Joinville and his siblings in Haitian Creole — but they would always respond in English
was still able to understand Haitian Creole — which is a language with roots in both Indigenous African languages and French — thanks to his immersion and connection to the language growing up
family members often teasing him that his tongue was heavy as he spoke the language
So when he came across an Instagram post with an opportunity to take Haitian Creole classes during the pandemic
» READ MORE: The Haitian American musical performance that’s connecting Black resistance in Haiti and Philadelphia
“I wanted something to connect with my heritage and culture … and I didn’t have the opportunity to do that because everything was closed,” said Joinville
who is also the director of strategic communication and programs in the city’s Office of Immigrant Affairs
The Zoom classes Joinville came across during the pandemic were the first opportunity he found in his adult life to constructively relearn his native language
Opportunities to learn Haitian Creole are growing — including in Philadelphia — which Haitian Americans say is a reflection of the diaspora reclaiming its roots
but also a postcolonial reclamation of pride specifically in their Black
“Certain people look down on Haitian Creole … as not the superior language,” Joinville said
While Haiti achieved independence from its colonizer
French colonialism continues to have a stronghold on the country and culture today
Many schools in the country teach in French
and with Haitians there is a general perception that those who are more educated and privileged speak French
while those with a lower socioeconomic status only speak Creole
the flipping of that on its head … where people are taking pride in Haitian Creole,” Joinville said
That pride is exactly what motivated Stephanie Sylvain to start organizing Haitian Creole classes in Philadelphia
» READ MORE: Soup joumou is a taste of freedom for Haitians celebrating independence across Philly
A Haitian American and former president of Haitian Professionals of Philadelphia
Sylvain had had many conversations with people of Haitian descent about their roots and heritage
Every person agreed on their love for the country
didn’t know how to speak the language fluently
“It’s the importance of communication and connection,” Sylvain said
“Our Haitian Creole is communicated with English mixed in it because we’re not fluent — having an opportunity to really be able to communicate myself personally as well as give other people the opportunity to do so meant a lot to me.”
Sylvain ended up connecting with Joel Leon
“The first generation has a responsibility to preserve the Haitian culture as a whole
but particularly the Creole language,” Leon said in French
“It’s a way not only to preserve the language
but also to establish a connection between Haiti and the diaspora.”
But the classes have also served non-Haitians
such as Nicole Austin-Hall and her daughter
who have found community and connection through the classes
and it’s important to know where we come from as African Americans,” said Austin-Hall
“It’s important for me to submerge my children in various cultures
so they can know who they are and identify with all people.”

Psychiatric hospitals tend to create institutionalised patients, thus further alienating them from their communities. But what also became clear to philosopher Frantz Fanon, while working as a psychiatrist at Blida-Joinville Hospital in Algeria between 1953 and 1956
was that patient integration was impossible in colonial societies
colonies produce fragmented societies that are haunted by fear and suspicion
As such they remain divided and their culture
Fanon’s short article “Confession in North Africa” was first delivered at the 1955 Congrès de Psychiatrie et de Neurologie de Langue Française
It was coauthored with his colleague and fellow director at Blida-Joinville Hospital
They also offered a critique of medical practices
Like other psychiatrists working in Algerian hospitals
Fanon hadn’t only attended to patients at the hospital
but had also been called upon by the colonial authorities to assess the sanity of people accused of crimes
confessions entail a form of “reciprocal recognition” in that they are prepared for a court
they signal the taking of ownership of personal wrongdoing and guilt
This idea of admitting one’s guilt — and paying one’s debt — is connected with reintegration into society
But the courts were finding that 80% of accused Algerians who had signed confessions after their arrest were retracting their statements
What the accused had agreed was true while at the police station was suddenly being denied
Fanon and Lacaton described a typical encounter:
often weigh very heavily against the accused
revealed the location of the weapon and several witnesses confirm having seen him strike (although sometimes even the witnesses retract their testimony)
when the time comes for the psychiatric evaluation
the expert finds himself in the presence of a lucid
coherent man proclaiming his innocence… The psychiatric expert is unable to uncover the truth of the criminal
The question Fanon and Lacaton addressed was why the accused were unwilling to stand by their confession
Fanon and Lacaton argued that the accused used silence to signal their non acceptance of being defined as criminal by the colonial administration
Fanon dismissed the then-hegemonic Algiers School’s notion of North Africans as pathological liars
Therefore the role of the confession had to be investigated
By extension the validity of the court itself had to be called into question
that confession represented a truth built on a kind of pseudo-reciprocity
They argued that the pseudo-truth of the initial confession can be understood as a result of submission to colonial rule
The retraction in fact represented a real truth
It expressed the “total separation” between the two social groups — European and North African
“the refusal of the accused Muslim to authenticate the social contract” by confessing to a crime means that
an often profound submission in the face of power is not to be confused with the acceptance of that power
As Fanon put it in the first chapter of The Wretched of the Earth
the colonised subject is always presumed guilty (but) the colonised does not accept guilt
Dominated but not domesticated (and) made to feel inferior (the colonised) is not convinced of inferiority
What the colonial law courts considered a failure of integration was in fact an elemental resistance to European rule
Fanon undermined the theories of the Algiers School and the colonial project generally. The Algiers School
founded by University of Lyon-trained Porot
held theories that black people are lazy and lack imagination
Arabs are criminally inclined and over-impulsive
Fanon dissolved these insidious stereotypes by placing the whole issue within a political frame
Another crucial issue arises from the short paper he wrote with Lacaton
the politics of truth and lies in a colonial society
Fanon also succinctly articulated this in [The Wretched of the Earth]:
In answer to the living lie of the colonial situation
the colonised subject responds with an equal falsehood
This notion of fundamental resistance reappears in a series of lectures that Fanon delivered at the University of Tunis in 1959 and 1960, titled “The Encounter of Psychiatry and Society”
Fanon responded to the question of the alleged laziness of the colonised as follows:
The idleness of the colonised is a means of protection
a measure of self-defence above all physiological… Work was conceived as forced labour in the colonies and
It is normal that the colonised refuses to do anything since work leads nowhere for them
In a chapter in [The Wretched of the Earth] called “Colonial War and Mental Disorders”
Fanon returned to the laziness of the colonised as a form of resistance
calling the zealous worker “pathological”:
In a colonial regime if a fellah were a zealous worker or a black were to refuse a break from work
they would be quite simply considered pathological cases
The colonised indolence is a conscious way of sabotaging the colonial machine; on the biological level it is a remarkable system of self-preservation and
a positive curb on the occupier’s stranglehold over the entire country
This is an edited extract from Nigel C. Gibson and Roberto Beneduce’s book Frantz Fanon, Psychiatry and Politics (Wits University Press)

BERLINALE 2024 Forum
by Giorgia Del Don
19/02/2024 - BERLINALE 2024: Algeria's Abdenour Zahzah dedicates his fiction feature film to psychiatrist Frantz Fanon and the pioneering role he played in liberating “the sick” from the prison of asylums
despite the fact the film is fictitious - albeit based on extensive research carried out for the director’s previous documentary on the psychiatrist - the intention isn’t so much biographical as to provide a snapshot of a key moment in Doctor Fanon’s life
when Fanon took on the role of Head of Department in Algiers’ Blida-Joinville Psychiatric Hospital
that his research in the medical field led to his discovery of the very real and terrible reality which Muslim patients suffered
the former were subject to the racist and colonial psychiatric approach in force at the time
It’s the sight of these deplorable conditions in which these patients are forced to live
which drives the film’s protagonist (played with intensity and without frills by Alexandre Desane) to revolutionise a hospital which he believes to be “sick”
Although the new approach to psychiatry advocated by Doctor Fanon – embracing patients’ words and inner worlds
closing the divide between patient and doctor
and opening the hospital doors in order to let in light
and life more generally – is well documented in the film
it’s the complex personality of Fanon himself that the director tries to highlight
Shot in Blida in majestic black and white tones
the film doesn’t focus so much on the patients’ viewpoints - which do feature but only in the background - as their day-to-day reality
Indignant at a psychiatric approach which he describes as “last century”
but impassive in his demonstration of this indignation
our protagonist roams through the psychiatric hospital as if a ghost
a spirit guide who has landed in a land abandoned by others
and uncompromising as if a neorealist work
the film urges us to think not only about Fanon’s stance as a psychiatrist and a supporter of Algerian independence
The film doesn’t indulge in spectacular scenes of violence
but the apparent sense of calm is no less troubling
the story distils a radical binarism between black and white
It’s a cruel opposition which Doctor Fanon tries to eradicate in every possible way
True Chronicles of the Blida Joinville Psychiatric Hospital in the Last Century, When Dr Frantz Fanon was Head of the Fifth Ward between 1953 and 1956 is produced by Algeria’s Atlas Film Production in co-production with French firm Shellac Sud

The island's strong point: its peace and quiet
offering a pleasant place to stroll away from the hustle and bustle of the city
The island also offers a wide range ofactivities
Cultural activities are not to be outdone. A School of the Arts has taken up residence on the island. Anecdotally, it is housed in a former guinguette (dance hall) depicted by Émile Zola in his novel Au bonheur des Dames
offers a fine vantage point from which to admire this building
whose ochre facades seem to play with the green of the branches
enjoy spotting the elegant mansions that dot the landscape - some overgrown with ivy
others in wood or with turrets - and often linked to privatepontoons and boats (if you please)
A little further on, you're likely to come face-to-face with a very original barge: the Lapin vert
the brightly coloredbarge is a cosmopolitan

on the way to the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro
a man with a fire extinguisher ran out from the crowd of spectators and attempted to extinguish the flame
a security guard tackled the man before the damage was done
This isn’t the first time someone has attempted to put out the flame as it travels Brazil
a 27-year-old man attempted to douse the torch in Maracaju
but he missed and instead doused a another torch bearer and security guards

From cultural requalification to urban identification
Implanted in the district of lower Joinville on the avenue of General Gallieni, the municipal School of dance in Joinville-le-Pont is a response to the cultural approach of the town.
© Julien LanooThe Avenue du General Gallieni as a future Metropolitan Avenue is a busy main road; its traffic is intense, noisy, but the vibrant living environment brings a growing centrality on this thoroughfare. The dance school is implanted in a heterogeneous streetscape, ranging from more or less recent apartment blocks and well preserved pavilions.
© Julien LanooSet back from the boundary of the land plot, the project breaks the street frontage built along the avenue to extend the public space and to reach a courtyard. This justifies the access to the amenities, marking a break in the continuous chain of shops at ground floor.
© Julien LanooStructure, space, movement
The narrow and deep site is wedged between a 4-storey apartment building in the east and a small supermarket in the west. This geometry influences the insertion of a simple volume, necessarily detached, the aim of which was to free as much space as possible to accommodate large and generous dance studios.
© Julien LanooThe structure consists of lateral concrete walls placed on the parcel boundaries which carry wide open floorplates, naturally lit and with an uninterrupted view over the horizon.
© Julien LanooBy strictly dividing the program between circulation on the avenue side, and the functional spaces and the garden areas on the interior, the school on the one hand optimizes the flow and circulation and on the other hand the solar orientations.
SectionTherefore, dance studios benefit from an optimal natural lighting from the north while the vertical circulations overlooking the avenue Gallieni, receive southern light that projects long shadows.
Minimalist interiors and raw materials such as varnished concrete, metal, contrasts with the precision of the outer shell of the building. Consisting of a perforated metal veil forming a regular diamond pattern, the envelope is designed as delicate lace, a goldsmith's work; it functions as a filter, rather like a moucharabieh that filters light without altering views.
The Dance School is significant by its difference with its mineral context and suburban buildings.
© Julien LanooIt is inserted as an unusual object
capable of arousing perplexity and curiosity of the passersby
so that its simple form looks like a monumental minimalist sculpture
The identity of the building brings curiosity

A complaint of fraud has been lodged in a protracted land dispute in French Polynesia by a descendant of the Tahitian royal family
Joinville Pomare told local media he had taken the action as people kept turning up with plans to build houses in the area in question in Punaauia
The area is claimed by a company SCI Delano which has been selling plots
but Pomare said it had no titles and was therefore committing fraud
a preliminary court ruling stopped moves to expel Pomare from the land where he started building what he called a royal residence
The ownership question had gone to France's highest court after the appeal court in French Polynesia in 2016 found that neither side had a proper title
this year the Paris court invalidated the appeal court decision and told it to rejudge the case
Pomare started his palace project while the company wanted to have him removed for alleged squatting
Joinville Pomare has vowed to push land rights in view of France's refusal to respect the treaties it signed
France no longer recognises a Tahitian royal family
although in 1880 Paris signed a treaty which guaranteed that the titles and customs of the Polynesians under its control would be maintained
Pomare was given a one-year prison sentence for abusing public funds
The owner of SCI Delano Thierry Barbion is in prison serving a four-year sentence for his role in a prostitution and drug trafficking racket

After a 16-year run, Gastown staple Jules Bistro has confirmed it will close for good at the end of 2023
which has been listed for sale in recent weeks
will shut down after a final night of service on December 31
and named his Parisian-inspired restaurant for his son
“Jules has been a labour of love for me since day one and making the decision to bid farewell is a bittersweet one
but it’s time for me to pass the torch to a new generation of culinary talent,” said Joinville
“It is with deep gratitude and love that I embark on the next adventure and enjoy semi-retirement
but ‘jusqu’a la prochaine fois’ — until the next time.”
“I am so thankful for all of my staff who have become like family over the years
and the guests who have dined with us since we opened
and I hope to make a few more memories in the days before our last service,” added Joinville
“We’ve been so lucky to forge friendships with so many regulars and be a part of their celebrations
and it’s an experience I will never forget.”
After surviving the pandemic, the French Bistro faced a challenging setback in April 2022
when a devastating fire ravaged the Winters Hotel across the street from the restaurant
In the aftermath of the blaze - which led to the Winters building being demolished - Jules was forced to close for nearly a month as the neighbourhood's infrastructure was restored.
Jules has long been known as a go-to for classic French bistro fare and wine
The restaurant regularly participated in city-wide dining events and occasions like Bastille Day
From now through its last day at 216 Abbott St
Jules will be open for business Tuesday to Friday from 3 to 9:30 p.m
and Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 a.m
diners in the Ambleside neighbourhood can bid bienvenue to a new brunch-focused bistro
Merèon is slated to open its doors at 1479 Clyde Ave
The restaurant’s menu “will marry time-honoured French recipes and classic techniques with West Coast ingredients delivered fresh daily,” reads a statement
Selections include a trio of croque sandwiches
Merèon’s menu was designed by Emmanuel Joinville
that restaurant will close its doors for good at the end of December
Joinville will lead the kitchen at the new West Vancouver eatery
Joinville started his career in his hometown of Dijon
France as an apprentice at chef Rene Villard’s Michelin three-starred restaurant Chateau Bourgogne
he moved to Paris where he opened Le 6 Bosquet
a small gastropub-inspired restaurant near the Eiffel Tower
Merèon will host 52 seats for brunch five days a week
Owner and North Vancouver resident Ophelia Arida says the idea for the restaurant came from her many travels to France
cuisine and the joy of bringing people together around a table to share a meal
“Those trips helped me develop my passion to host and showcase the sort of hospitality and home-spun cuisine for which French culture is so well known,” she said in the statement
“It’s a place that’s nostalgic
welcoming and evocative where guests can gather around the table and enjoy a little joie de vivre with friends
The name Merèon is a nod to women who helped establish Lyon as the gastronomic centre of France – especially Mère Brazier

Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court restricted the carrying of weapons in polling stations
in another sign of concern about possible violence
A Brazilian Supreme Court judge on Monday temporarily suspended several provisions implemented by far-right President Jair Bolsonaro that allowed people to buy weapons
citing a “risk of political violence” during the electoral campaign
“The start of the election campaign exacerbates the risk of political violence,” which “makes the need to restrict access to weapons and ammunition extremely and exceptionally urgent,” Justice Edson Fachin wrote
Fachin said he made the decision “in light of recent and unfortunate episodes of political violence.”
He did not specify whether he was referring to local events
such as the July shooting of a Workers’ Party (PT) treasurer by a Bolsonaro-supporting police officer
or the attempted assassination in neighboring Argentina Thursday of the Vice President Cristina Kirchner
Fachin’s decision establishes that only “people who concretely demonstrate an effective need” can have weapons
It also determines that purchasing restricted-use firearms should only be allowed for reasons of “public security or national defense
not based on personal interest,” as for hunters
which jumped from 117,000 registrations to more than 673,000 under the Bolsonaro administration
