The original, sloping terrain was modified to give way to two plateaus with a difference in elevation of four meters between them. These plateaus accommodate buildings that vary between one and two stories. The meeting of these two levels is made with stepped retaining walls containing gardens that minimize this difference in level, in addition to protecting the circulation on the upper floor, bringing safety to users.

Cicero Romao Batista was born in 1844 and died at age 90 in this arid
His followers say that during a Mass celebrated by the priest in 1889
a woman receiving communion declared that the host had turned to blood in her mouth
but the Vatican was displeased and suspended Padre Cicero

and his supporters hope that he will eventually be rehabilitated and canonized
Padre Cicero was both a priest and a politician
serving as mayor of Juazeiro do Norte for 15 years
He became renowned for helping the poor and improving the lives of farmers and residents of Brazil’s arid northeast
“We believe that he was — that he is — an important person for our northeast and we hope he can intercede (before God) and send rain,” said Leunil Gomes de Carvalho

Brazil - April 2019 - The Salesian mission in Juazeiro do Norte was started 80 years ago by Fr Antônio de Almeida Agra

As part of the celebrations for the 80th anniversary

presided over the Eucharistic celebration which was attended
by various religious of the BRE Province and representatives of the whole Salesian center of Juazeiro do Norte

reports that almost 90 years after his death
the once excommunicated priest may officially become a saint…
In a country where people have revered folk religious figures for centuries
Padim Ciço – or Father Cícero Romão Batista (1844-1934) – has been the greatest of all Brazilian unofficial saints
two million devotees visit Juazeiro do Norte
in order to thank him for a cure or another grace obtained through his intercession
practices became ritualised: People go first to the local churches to pray and then to the giant sculpture that portrays Padim Ciço
with the hope that their problems will be solved when the ribbon is untied
The whole phenomenon was never directly supported by the Catholic hierarchy

“Once I was talking to a pilgrim about the fact that the Vatican had never recognised Father Cícero’s sainthood
so the Pope does not know that my Padim Ciço is a saint?’”
a university professor who has studied Batista’s life
While the announcement was celebrated in the region of Juazeiro – and in a great part of the South American country – for many of his devotees
the news was met with something of a shrug
“Once I was talking to a pilgrim about the fact that the Vatican had never recognised Father Cícero’s sainthood,” recalled Renato Casimiro
so the Pope does not know that my Padim Ciço is a saint?’
“It is quite common to witness that kind of reaction,” added Casimiro
who has closely followed the back and forth between the diocese and the Vatican around the subject of Batista’s beatification
for years there have been several obstacles to Batista’s canonisation
many originating in controversies that began when he was still alive
Batista settled in 1872 in Juazeiro do Norte
then simply an abandoned district of the city of Crato
though it was situated in a fertile valley in the middle of a very dry region
Batista’s steady work to develop agriculture in Juazeiro over the years attracted new families
many of them fleeing severe droughts in Ceará and neighbouring states in north-eastern Brazil
Most were also trying to escape violence and poverty
The region’s lands used to be in the hands of a small number of big landowners
who maintained large masses of peasants in extreme poverty
“He would welcome all of them with joy and a charitable spirit
Batista rapidly became an important leader who worked hard to develop the local economy and secure the means of subsistence for everyone,” Casimiro said
Batista imported more productive strains of sugar cane and yucca from other states
incentivizing the modernization of farming methods in an area severely limited by state negligence and ignorance
Father Cícero would be like the founder of a great non-governmental organisation or a social pastoral ministry that helps the poor,” Casimiro said
Batista’s careful work with peasants and his tenderness with them – in an era when priests were often austere and inaccessible figures – made his fame grow all over the sertão
His nickname padim comes from his kindness: It means “little priest” and also “godfather”
rich people began to give him lands and money to contribute to his work
powerful man – but he always used everything to help the poor,” said Rev Wesley Barros
“When new people arrived looking for his help
he would simply give them a house and land.”
Indigenous from the Pankararu tribe carry a cross and images of Padre Cicero
along the Holy Sepulchre path used by pilgrims in Juazeiro do Norte
He became renowned for helping the poor and improving the lives of farmers and residents of Brazil’s arid north-east
who had received the Communion wafer from the priest
said it turned into blood in her mouth – and she kept the handkerchief with blood stains
this phenomenon occurred 46 more times over the next couple of years
A committee was formed by the diocese to investigate the alleged miracle and concluded there was no plausible explanation
But the local bishop designated another group to analyse the events
The bishop suspended Batista’s orders and cloistered Maria de Araújo
“He complied with the order and ceased to administer the sacraments
But he kept his charitable work and his commitment to the people – who continued to see him as a saint,” Barros said
the “miracle of Juazeiro” greatly accentuated Batista’s fame as a holy man
Thousands of people traveled to the city to see him and ask for his blessing – and many ultimately chose to settle there
“An aunt of mine had a dream in which Padim Ciço told her to come to Juazeiro
many people tell that kind of story,” Casimiro said
The Catholic hierarchy did not know how to deal with his growing fame and ordered Batista to leave Juazeiro do Norte
He did not and became an important political leader in the region
The combination of his holy status and his powerful social influence led the Vatican to issue an excommunication order against him
But Batista was in poor health by then and the local bishop never followed through on the excommunication orders
“The problems which led to that controversy were far in the past
The bishop explained his reasons to the Vatican after three years
and the pope agreed and told the diocese to leave things that way,” added Barros
the church continued to downplay his legacy
people were not encouraged to show their devotion to Padim Ciço
Parents were even forbidden to give their children the name Cícero or Cícera during baptisms
the large groups of pilgrims who came to visit Juazeiro do Norte throughout the year were welcomed by the local clergy
“The ecclesiastical officials had a very strict theological understanding at those times
They did not understand the exaggerated – and at times superstitious – practices of that very humble people from the sertão,” Barros said
But over the years the pilgrims’ faith also matured
The Juazeiro do Norte’s pilgrim’s pastoral ministry became an active force and promoted a closer relationship between Padim Ciço’s devotees and the formal Catholic world
pilgrims pray and pay tribute at a statue of Padre Cicero
Rev Cicero Romao Batista was born in 1844 and died at age 90 in this arid
a woman receiving Communion declared that the Communion host had turned to blood in her mouth
but the Vatican was displeased and suspended him
a new generation of bishops began a process to rehabilitate Padim Ciço in the Vatican
Documents and reports produced by researchers such as Casimiro were sent to Rome to demonstrate Batista’s integrity as a man of faith and his relevance as a holy figure in Brazil
“He was not ‘pardoned’ like Galileo Galilei
but there was a reconciliation,” Casimiro explained
The Vatican did not have any formal complaint against Batista but never acted to stimulate the beatification process
decided to ask Pope Francis directly about Padim Ciço’s sainthood
“The Catholic Church is going through a synodal process
How could we remain deaf to the pilgrim’s cry regarding their wish to revere Padim Ciço
That certainly touched Pope Francis’ heart,” Barros said
The Vatican responded to the message with the authorization to launch the cause of Batista’s beatification
the Diocese of Crato will begin to receive testimonies concerning Padim Ciço’s miracles
No physician seemed to be able to discover what was her disease
I begged Padim Ciço for a diagnosis,” Dinalva Rodrigues
Piauí state (360 miles west from Juazeiro do Norte)
Rodrigues has been visiting Padim Ciço’s city every year since she was 18
her mother was finally diagnosed with diabetes
“Her sugar levels were finally controlled and she has not been infected with the novel coronavirus — thanks to Padim Ciço,” she said
she plans to visit Juazeiro again to thank her benefactor
Although most of Batista’s devotees are from the northeast part of Brazil
he is a popular figure throughout the country
mostly because millions of northeasterners have migrated away from the region since the 1950s – primarily to the larger cities in the south-east – in search of better work opportunities
“I have been living in São Paulo for 28 years and I could never come back to Juazeiro
I used to visit it every year with my grandparents
who were great devotees of Padim Ciço,” said Adeilva Delmondes
Pernambuco state (135 kilometres south of Juazeiro do Norte)
Her grandmother told her to wash her hair with the holy water from Juazeiro do Norte
she and her family have received numerous graces with Padim Ciço’s intercession
a fire broke out in the house of my neighbour
My son and my husband called me to leave our house
The fire was extinguished before hitting us,” Delmondes said
Barros said that when the collection process starts
they will probably be looking for reports of terminally ill patients who were cured
but “all kinds of graces will be useful to compose Padim Ciço’s records.”

Brazil - November 2021 - In order to promote a cultural educational program for young people in the city of Juazeiro do Norte
the Salesian Institute "São João Bosco"
in collaboration with the Salesian broadcaster "Rádio FM Padre Cícero" (104.5)
has renewed and relaunched the “Youth Connect” program
The program airs every Saturday from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm local time and counts on the participation of teachers
students and various collaborators of the Salesian Institute
different themes are treated and the young people themselves animate discussions and debates in which they expose their ideas
their problems and their deepest reflections
Pietra Valentina, a trans teenager aged just 16, was brutally stabbed to death Monday (5 April) in Ceará, Brazil
prompting activists to simply plead: “Young people deserve to live.”
In the latest act of violence in Jair Bolsonaro‘s Brazil, Valentina was killed with a knife in front of a school in the Pio XII neighbourhood in the city of Juazeiro do Norte, activists and authorities say
the victim was stabbed some 15 times near the Pereira Expedito Tabellion School
Both state and military police forces have launched a search for the killer, according to local outlet G1
has not disclosed any details about the victim nor the circumstances of her death
But for LGBT+ activists and trans Brazilians
In January, Keron Ravach, a trans 13-year-old, was slain in Ceará. Kicked and punched to death by a 17-year-old, her body tossed in a vacant plot of land, G1 reported
A shy girl with dreams of making it big as an influencer
Ravach was often seen playing in the Camocim town square with friends
Ceará in northeastern Brazil is among four states that have, for the last four years, tallied the highest number of murders, according to monitoring groups
22 trans and gender nonconforming people were murdered in the state – only São Paulo saw more homicides
Overall, 2020 was one of the deadliest years for trans people in Brazil since records began, with a trans person was murdered every two days in a nation of 211 million. Such a spectre of violence is unsurprising, activists say, considering the rise of Brazil’s president Jair Bolasonaro, a self-described “proud homophobe“
“Deeply regrettable and saddened to learn of yet another cowardly murder of a young trans woman from Ceará,” tweeted human rights activist Rebato Roseno

Dramatic video footage captured the moment a man was seriously injured by a bodybuilding machine at a gym in Brazil, leaving him with a 1 percent chance of ever walking again.
Regilânio da Silva, 42, had just taken a break in between his workout and was sitting on the bench when the machine holding 330 pounds of plates collapsed over his neck on Friday at a training center in Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará.
Three men can see seen quickly removing the lever off da Silva's back and signaling for help while he remained sitting on the bench.
Da Silva, a father of three children, underwent emergency for four hours at Santo Antônio Hospital to stabilize his neck.
The last medical updated indicated that he was in stable condition, but he has no mobility in his legs.
His sister, Maria das Dores, said that he has mobility in his arms.
Neurosurgeon Dr. José Correia suggested that the chances of him being able to walk again are very slim.
'It depends a lot on the degree of injury at first, the level of return of previous functions,' Dr. Correia said, as quoted by Brazilian news outlet G1.
'There are neither motor nor sensitive components, unfortunately. It is the most serious injury there is from the point of view of neurological damage. The chance is, statistically, less than 1% of the return of motor and sensitive functions.'
Dr. Correia added that 'the thoracolumbar junction, which is the transition from the rib cage to the lumbar region, has lost bone continuity. It doesn't touch one bone to another.'
According to 220 FIT gym, the machine was purchased less than 60 days ago and was in perfect condition.
Cícero Aparecido, a manager at the training facility, said the equipment has plates on the side with a center lock and that customers performed 'conventional squats on the machine rather than freestyle squats.'
Da Silva's family said that loved ones and the gym split the cost of the $7,000 surgery.
Since then they have set up an account on the crowdfunding site, Vakinha, to raise funds for da Silva's recovery.
'Let's pray that Regi recovers quickly and that his progress is blessed by divine grace to regain leg movement,' the family said.

In something that looked like a Final Destination scene
a gym goer was crushed by equipment and might not be able to walk again
After a trip to the 220 Fit gym in Juazeiro do Norte
was in a freak accident involving a squat machine that was holding 150kg plates
As it was captured on the gym’s CCTV cameras
many have witnessed the awful moment that Da Silva was caught unawares and crushed by the weight on 4 August
Now, the father of three has been told that has only one percent chance of ever walking again after the accident happened at 220 FIT gym in Brazil
In the footage, Da Silva can be seen sitting on a bench, as he was taking a break in between his own workout sets, but tragedy was to strike out of the blue as he was then hit with 150kg worth of plates from above as a squat machine collapsed over his neck
three men quickly sprang into action and were able to get the weight off
whilst flagging down others to call emergency services
Da Silva was then rushed to Santo Antônio Hospital where he needed to go through four hours of treatment just to stabilise his neck
But it wasn’t enough to reverse an immense amount of damage to his body and although he can use his arms
there is very little chance that he will ever walk again
Dr José Correia, a neurosurgeon told Brazilian news outlet G1 that there are factors to consider when in this type of gym accident situation
He said: "It depends a lot on the degree of injury at first
"There are neither motor nor sensitive components
It is the most serious injury there is from the point of view of neurological damage
less than 1% of the return of motor and sensitive functions."
This is because 'the thoracolumbar junction
which is the transition from the rib cage to the lumbar region
has lost bone continuity; it doesn't touch one bone to another'
Although the gym equipment fell on Da Silva
the gym has claimed that the machine was in perfect condition
having been purchased only two months before the accident
explained that the machine features a centre lock and plates on the side so that visitors can do 'conventional squats on the machine rather than freestyle squats'
but the mystery of how the machine collapsed has yet to be solved
the gym stated that: "A veteran student who was practicing his exercise on a loaded machine also sat down to rest on the platform which would be for foot support."
They continued that this meant that the machine accidentally fell on Da Silva
The company stressed that they were recently inspected and were in 'full compliance'
Though it's unsure exactly how it happened
Da Silva's family claim they and the gym equally paid for the cost of his surgery
which amounted to around £5,400 in the end
To further raise funds for his extensive recovery
they have also set up a crowdfunding account on Vakinha
asking people to 'pray that Regi recovers quickly and that his progress is blessed by divine grace to regain leg movement'
