(TSXV: LGC) (OTCQX: LGCFF) ("Lavras Gold" or the "Company") is pleased to release the results from 12 new drill holes representing 4,007 metres
testing the Fazenda do Posto Gold Target ("Fazenda do Posto" or "Fazenda Gold Discovery")
located at the western side of the LDS Project in southern Brazil
Gold mineralization was intersected in 11 of the 12 holes reported in this news release at Fazenda do Posto
The Fazenda Gold Discovery is located immediately adjacent and northwest to the Butiá gold deposit (Figure 1)
which hosts a surface Mineral Resource Estimate of 377,000 ounces of gold in the Measured and Indicated categories
and 115,000 ounces of gold in the Inferred category
Several of these 12 new holes returned more than 100 metres of continuous gold mineralization characterized by higher-grade subintervals — consistent with previous results
The Company has also engaged SGS Laboratory in Belo Horizonte
Brazil to complete a comprehensive metallurgical test program for Fazenda do Posto mineralization
The first batch of bulk samples was recently sent to the lab
These new drill results and initiatives continue to move Lavras Gold toward its short-term corporate goal of defining an economically feasible gold resource on the LDS Project
focused on the Fazenda do Posto Gold Discovery
HIGHLIGHTSDrilling*Hole 24BT043 intersected:
* NOTE to Hole 24BT043 —This hole is tagged with a Butiá drill hole number as it was collared on the Butiá claim block
drilling west into the Fazenda do Posto claim block
"In addition to making new discoveries in this highly prospective gold district
our short-term goal remains unchanged — the delineation of an economically feasible gold mine on the LDS Project
The results from this new round of drilling are very exciting for us in that they significantly enhance our understanding of the Fazenda do Posto Gold Discovery and the northeast/southwest trending structures that play a significant role in the pattern and nature of mineralization at Fazenda do Posto," commented Lavras Gold President & CEO
drillhole 24BT043 was collared on the far eastern side of Fazenda do Posto adjacent to Butiá and drilled in a northwesterly direction on an azimuth of 290 degrees and inclined 60 degrees
The purpose was to test for the continuity of gold mineralization across an interpreted northeast-southwesterly direction
The hole intercepted more than 250 metres of consistent gold mineralization
successfully extending the known gold mineralized footprint to the northwest
this hole was drilled in a direction perpendicular to discovery hole 23FP002 that was drilled on an azimuth of 020 degrees and inclined 60 degrees returning 340.0 metres
thus demonstrating the robustness of continuous gold mineralization over a very large area
the new drilling results continue to demonstrate the excellent gold grade and continuity of the Fazenda do Posto Gold Discovery
Long continuous intervals of gold mineralization over more than 100 metres typically with higher-grade subintervals confirm the disseminated nature of gold mineralization at Fazenda do Posto
Part of the on-going drilling program at Fazenda do Posto is testing the potential for extensions to mineralization based on our increasingly more detailed and evolving geological model
Our current interpretation is that Fazenda do Posto is a steeply northwest plunging
We have also initiated a detailed metallurgical testing program for Fazenda do Posto and Butiá
as part of the overall derisking strategy for the project
"We will continue drilling at the Butiá and Fazenda do Posto areas and to the north on the Caneleira Concession
Click here for additional comments on the importance of these northeast/southwest trending structures from CEO Michael Durose
Discussion of Drill Results — Fazenda do Posto Discovery
Fazenda do Posto is the most advanced gold discovery on the LDS Project located immediately adjacent to and slightly northwest of the Butiá Gold Deposit
The purpose of the current drilling program at Fazenda do Posto is to define the gold mineralization footprint and extent of mineralization
and gain greater insight into the geological controls to mineralization
Recent drilling results from Fazenda do Posto were disclosed in the news release dated September 09
results from 36 drill holes totaling 11,067 metres of drilling have been disclosed based on the 2023 and 2024 drilling program
This total includes the 12 holes disclosed in this news release (24FP025 to 24FP036 ((excluding 24FP033 which was lost)); and 24BT043)
more than 30,000 metres of drilling have been completed at the adjacent Butiá gold deposit to date
including historical drilling prior to 2022
Figure 1 is a general location map for the LDS Project deposits and targets
Drill collar locations for Fazenda do Posto are shown in Figure 2
Details of drill holes showing assay results can be found in the plan view in Figure 3
A long section looking northeast is shown in Figure 4
Table 1 details all assay results including newly disclosed results in this press release
Table 2 tabulates drill hole information including collar coordinates
Note drill hole 24FP026 was collared 1.4 kilometres northwest of the main zone of drilling at Fazenda do Posto and is not shown in Figure 2
A primary purpose of the recent drilling was to test the lateral continuity of gold mineralization across a postulated northeast trending structural corridor
Ten of the 12 holes drilled had an azimuth oriented 90 to 110 degrees
and/or 290 degrees and inclined 60 degrees
As shown in Figure 3 and summarized in Table 1
Drillholes 24FP025 and 24FP028 were vertical holes designed to test the vertical continuity of mineralization
The lateral holes confirm continuous gold mineralization across a northeast trending structural corridor
24FP035 and 24FP036 suggest a northeast trending structure along the southeast portion of the Fazenda do Posto target area characterized by continuous moderate grade gold mineralization associated with episyenite and perthitic granite
Drillhole 24FP026 tested a target 1.4 kilometres northwest of the main zone of drilling at Fazenda do Posto and did not find any gold mineralization
Central and North Portion of Fazenda do Posto
Drillhole 24BT043 was collared in the east-central portion of Fazenda do Posto and drilled from east to west on an azimuth of 290 degrees and inclined 60 degrees
The hole returned multiple intervals of gold in mineralized episyenite and perthitic granite
Drillhole 24FP025 was collared in the north central portion of Fazenda do Posto and drilled vertically to test the depth extent of mineralization
Drillhole 24FP032 was collared west of Fazenda do Posto
and drilled from west to east on an azimuth of 110 degrees and inclined at 60 degrees
The hole was designed to test mineralization across a northeast trending structure
Drill hole 24FP027 was a step out hole and collared northwest of the main zone of mineralization at Fazenda do Posto and designed to test for the extension of favourable alteration and mineralization
The hole was drilled from west to east on an azimuth of 110 degrees and an inclined angle of 60 degrees
The hole encountered alternating intervals of fresh granodiorite and metasomatiized/albitized rock
along with multiple intercepts of lamprophyre dykes
followed by strongly altered perthitic granite and 3 intervals of mineralized episyenite
This is a significant finding as it demonstrates that the metasomatic alteration and mineralizing processes are open to the north of the known mineralized footprint of Fazenda do Posto
The current interpretation is that the mineralized zones of episyenite are occurring along northeast trending structures north of the current mineralized footprint at Fazenda do Posto
Further work is required to better understand this area
Drillhole 24FP029 was drilled from west to east on an azimuth of 110 degrees and inclined at 60 degrees
The hole successfully demonstrated gold mineralization in the central south portion of Fazenda do Posto
Drillhole 24FP30 was drilled from west to east on an azimuth of 110 degrees and inclined at 60 degrees in the south-central portion of Fazenda do Posto
Drillhole 24FP031 was drilled from west to east on an azimuth of 110 degrees and inclined at 60 degrees in the east-central portion of the Fazenda do Posto
Three holes were drilled to test the southeast area of Fazenda do Posto
Drillhole 24FP034 was drilled from west to east on an azimuth of 110 degrees and inclined at 60 degrees
The hole returned multiple intervals of moderate grade disseminated gold
including 51.0 metres grading 0.3 g/t gold within mineralized episyenite
and including 15.0 metres grading 0.4 g/t gold from 73.0 metres
Drillhole 24FP035 was drilled from west to east on an azimuth of 110 degrees and inclined at 60 degrees
The hole returned several gold intervals of low to moderate gold grades within episyenite and perthitic granite
Drillhole 24FP036 was drilled from west to east on an azimuth of 110 degrees and inclined 60 degrees
The hole intercepted several intervals of gold mineralization similar to drillhole 24FP035
Please refer to Table 1 for a complete list of all drill holes and detailed assay results

Quality Assurance & Quality Control: For the Butiá Gold Deposit
and analysis are monitored through the implementation of formal chain-of-custody procedures and quality assurance/quality control programs designed to follow industry best practices
All drill hole samples in this drilling program consist of split NQ diamond drill core
Drill core is logged and sampled in a secure facility located in Lavras do Sul
Drill core samples for gold assay are cut in half using a diamond saw and submitted to ALS Laboratories Inc
Brazil for preparation by crushing to 85% passing 1.0 mm
Peru and analyzed by a 50g fire assay and AAS finish
Three 50g aliquots are taken for samples in the mineralized zone and one aliquot is taken in fresh rocks
The average grade of the three aliquots is used to determine the final grade of the mineralized sample
non-certified blanks and field duplicates are inserted into the sample stream at regular intervals
so that QA/QC accounted for about 10% of the total samples
Results are routinely evaluated for accuracy
Lavras Gold has been targeting larger intersections of greater than 0.25 g/t gold
Intersections that are lower than this threshold may provide exploration insight and may therefore be disclosed
The Company maintains a robust QAQC program that includes the collection and analysis of duplicate samples and the insertion of blanks and standards (certified reference material)

Hole 23FP002 includes 160 metres at 1.79 g/t gold including 68 metres at 2.09 g/t gold
old-fashioned boots on the ground field exploration has yielded a potentially game-changing discovery for Lavras Gold Corp
Drilling at the new Fazenda do Posto discovery on the Company’s LDS Project in southern Brazil has returned assay results with remarkably continuous mineralization of 340 metres grading 1.09 g/t gold from 117 metres including:
Drill hole 23FP002 was collared roughly 150 metres west of the Butiá Gold Deposit
which has an NI 43-101 gold resource (see details below) of approximately 500,000 ounces
The hole tested a blind target with no obvious signs of surface mineralization in an area of recessive topography across an interpreted northeast trending fault
The hole was drilled north on a 020 degree azimuth and a dip of 060 degrees
“This new discovery on our Fazenda do Posto claim block is a potential game changer for Lavras Gold,” said Michael Durose
“It is remarkable that we have discovered a long
continuous bulk-tonnage disseminated style of gold mineralization in this intrusive-hosted gold system only 150 metres from the western edge of the Butiá Gold Deposit
“This is a blind gold discovery associated with an interpreted down-dropped block of rock across a northeast trending fault
The discovery was made by good old-fashioned field geology with boots on the ground
“Congratulations to our entire team in Brazil for this excellent outcome
We have two drill rigs in this target area and will vigorously follow up with the goal of fast-tracking the process of defining the geometry and grade distribution of this important new discovery.”

The Fazenda do Posto discovery is located along the western edge of the Lavras do Sul intrusive complex approximately 4.7 kilometres southwest of the town of Lavras do Sul (Figure 1)
Drill hole 23FP002 was collared about 150 metres west of the Butiá Gold Deposit (Figure 2) in an area of recessive topography
There is no obvious surface expression of this gold discovery
A surface gold-in-soil anomaly occurs immediately to the east of Fazenda do Posto and is associated with the Butiá Gold Deposit (see Figure 3)
The report was prepared by VMG Consultoria e Soluções Ltda
and is available on the Company’s website and www.sedar.com under Lavras Gold’s issuer profile
The area where drill hole 23FP002 was collared was previously interpreted to be outside of the favourable rocks hosting the Lavras do Sul gold deposits in the Fazenda do Posto granodiorites
a reinterpretation of the previous drill hole information from the Butiá Gold Deposit
combined with field observations that the area west of Butiá was associated with recessive topography
and possibly related to a zone of hydrothermal alteration that was causing this recessive feature was the reason to test this target
Further interpretation suggested that there was a northeast trending fault
and that it was possibly related to major crustal-scale structures known in the district
This interpretation was reaffirmed by a drone aeromagenetic survey that Lavras Gold completed in the area
Drill hole 23FP002 was collared with an azimuth of north 020 and an inclined angle of 060 degrees
A cross section looking west at 23FP002 is shown in Figure 4
The hole encountered 114 metres of overlying cover rock interpreted to be the Fazenda do Posto granodiorite
The bottom of this granodiorite appears to be silicified or albitized
This alteration has almost completely replaced the original quartz and feldspar minerals in the granodiorite (see Figure 5)
There is virtually no gold detected in this rock which may be acting as a cap and thereby masking any gold anomalism at surface
The hole then enters a long continuous interval of gold-mineralized red-brick coloured episyenite from 114 metres to 431 metres (Figure 6)
with smaller intervals of moderately mineralized perthitic granite
This is followed by mineralized perthitic granite from 431 metres to 453 metres
and then unmineralized perthitic granite to the bottom of the hole at 465 metres
The highlights of drill hole 23FP002 gold assay results are 340 metres grading 1.09 g/t gold from 117 metres including:
The gold mineralization is hosted in a brick-red coloured hydrothermally altered intrusive rock called “episyenite,” which consists of approximately 95% potassium feldspar
1-2% millimetre-scale grey-white carbonate vesicles
and 1-3% very fine-grained to fine grained disseminated and framboidal pyrite and arsenian pyrite
These disseminated sulphides are intimately associated with black clots of iron-rich chlorite that occurs in the matrix to the feldspar minerals
there is no visible quartz in the episyenite
as the rocks are silica undersaturated and the alteration is interpreted to be of alkaline affinity
larger cubic pyrite creates a framboidal texture
cross-cutting millimetre tocentimetre scale sulphide veinlets result in higher grade gold values typically in the 4 to 6 g/t range (see Figures 7 and 8)
While the entire 340 metre interval is gold mineralized
it is very significant that there are long intervals of bulk-tonnage style higher-grade gold above 2 g/t as highlighted above
These higher-grade intervals suggest the hole may be tracking toward a feeder structure although further drilling is required to confirm this
This new gold discovery is open in all directions
There are several zones of typically 8 to 10 metres of less than 0.20 g/t material usually associated with intervals of perthitic granite
When these low-grade zones are removed from the analysis
we estimate that the mineralized rock has an average gold grade of 1.35 g/t over 269 metres
Table 1 tabulates the assay results for the mineralized interval of drill hole 23FP002
Sampling was completed on 1 metre intervals for the entire length of the drill hole
Three 50 gram aliquots were assayed for each 1 metre sample
and the average grade of the three aliquots was used to derive the final gold grade
Indications are that a significant gold mineral system is developing at the Fazenda do Posto gold discovery and the adjacent Butiá Gold Deposit
Two drill rigs are on site testing these areas
The near-term objective is to define the geometry and gold grade distribution of the Fazenda do Posto discovery and possibly look for more blind discoveries
The second objective is to test for extensions to the mineralized footprint of the Butiá Gold Deposit
It is noteworthy that the alteration system and gold-in-soil anomaly at Butiá extends for more than 3 kilometres in a southeast-northwest direction
and for greater than 2 kilometres to the north towards the Galvao and Zeca Souza discoveries (Figure 3)
It is also noteworthy that Fazenda do Posto has a higher-grade core of mineralization that could materially enhance the overall economics of a potential mining project
The medium-term goal is to de-risk the Fazenda do Posto discovery and Butiá Gold Deposit such that a preliminary economic study defining the general scope of a gold mining project can be prepared
OVERALL LDS EXPLORATION PROGRAM MARKED BY EXCEPTIONAL SUCCESS

Fazenda do Posto is a blind gold discovery located on a down-dropped block to the west of Butiá
The gold in soil anomaly measures 4.2 kilometres in a southeast-northwest direction and for more than 1.5 kilometres to the northeast towards the Galvao and Zeca Souza gold targets

Salmon colour is Fazenda do Posto granodiorite
FIGURE 5Example of albitized and/or silicified Fazenda do Posto granodiorite cover rock from drill hole 23FP002 at 109 metres
The original rock textures have been nearly completely obliterated due to hydrothermal alkalic alteration
Remnant quartz and feldspar phenocrysts are evident
It is postulated that this rock was acting as a barrier or cap masking any surface expression of gold mineralization
FIGURE 6Typical example of gold mineralization in episyenite from drill hole 23FP002
The rock consists of 95% brick red potassium feldspar
2-3% black to dark green iron-rich chlorite
and 1-3% disseminated pyrite and arsenian pyrite
This example is from drill hole 23FP002 from 136 to 137 metres
The brick red colouration in the feldspar is from iron and barium
Note that the feldspar grain boundaries are sub-rounded to sub-angular reflecting pervasive metasomatic alteration likely from alkaline fluids

Star pacer Lavra Joe, a winner of 26 races at Gloucester Park, will reappear after a four-week absence when he begins from the No. 1 barrier in the $31,000 Catalano Truck and Equipment Sales Free-For-All at Gloucester Park on Friday night.
He has a losing sequence of nine, but star reinsman Kyle Harper gives the Ray Jones-trained gelding a good chance of beating champion four-year-old Never Ending, who will be on trial for a start in the $200,000 Golden Nugget the following Friday night when he resumes racing after a 13-week absence.
“Talking to Ray, he is happy enough with him, and if the horse is anywhere near his top, he will be very hard to beat,” said Harper. “The plan (from barrier No. 1) will be to lead, and that’s where he does his best work, out in front.”
Harper’s wife Lauren handled Lavra Joe in a 2100m mobile trial at Bunbury last Friday night which was virtually a one-horse affair, with the other starter Miki Windermere being an unraced three-year-old colt who trailed Lavra Joe by some 100 metres throughout.
Lavra Joe was not extended at any stage when he covered the final four 400m sections in 30.4sec., 29.6sec., 28.3sec. and 27.2sec. and rated 1.56.1.
“I watched the workout which was a one-horse trial,” said Kyle Harper. “He ran good enough times.”
Lavra Joe last appeared in a race when he was an $81 outsider from the outside barrier (No. 9) on the front line in the WA Pacing Cup on November 8. He was 11TH at the bell and was hampered by a tiring horse before finally getting clear and finishing strongly into sixth place behind Minstrel.
“It was a really good run,” said Harper. “We went to the rail and drove him quietly because he hadn’t been racing up to his best. But he had no luck and got dragged back before finally he came home via the cape and finished strongly with a fast last half.”
Never Ending, a winner at 16 of his 23 starts, including a Gloucester Park record of 17 starts for 13 wins, two seconds, one third and one ninth, for outstanding Boyanup trainer Justin Prentice, will start from the outside barrier in the field of seven, with Gary Hall Jnr in the sulky.
Never Ending will be having his first start since finishing eighth behind Don Hugo in the TAB Eureka at Menangle on September 7.
“Justin is happy with the way he is going, and it is a difficult race to line up,” said Hall. “I’d say that Never Ending will sit up, and the small field will help him. I visualise Never Ending racing in the one-out, two-back position, and from there he would be dangerous.
“I think he could struggle first-up to beat the best version of Lavra Joe.”
Hall has several other solid winning prospects on Friday night, including Mikis Beach (race one), Franklin Delano (race two), Venture (race three), Mandown (race five) and Penny Black (race seven).
“I think Mikis Beach is the best horse in the race, and I’m happy to lead or breeze,” said Hall. “Franklin Delano has received no favours from the draw (barrier No. 7), but he is a good each-way chance. His second to Tualou at his last start was good, after setting the pace.
“Ventura and Mandown should be prominent, while Penny Black (trained by Michael Young) should prove hard to beat.”
Young is pleased with Penny Black’s form, and he reported that the four-year-old mare had pulled up in good shape after working hard in the breeze and getting up to snatch victory from the pacemaker Insta Gator over 2130m at a 1.54.9 rate last Friday night.
“Penny Black has had no luck when it comes to barrier draws,” said Young, who also prepares Acushla Machree (barrier one). Penny Black (barrier No. 5) should fight out the finish in a race in which Little Darling (barrier three) has been a nemesis of ours.
Acushla Machree has led and won at Narrogin and Gloucester Park at her past two starts, and she is sure to be prominent again, from the No. 1 barrier. She will be driven by Maddison Brown.
Astute Henley Brook trainer Mike Reed is confident that comeback pacer Ragazzo Mach will prove hard to beat when he starts from the No. 5 barrier in the Catalano Truck and Equipment Sales Ugga Dugga Pace.
“Ragazzo Mach was a most unlucky sixth behind Whataretheodds last Friday night,” said Reed. “Shannon (Suvaljko) said he was bolting and would have won if he had got out. He has had two nice easy runs (after a first-up second to Jawsoflincoln) and they will know he’s there on Friday night.”

The growth of the urban population promotes a strong pressure to occupy open spaces in urban center
Canalization and drainage techniques favored urban expansion and occupation of these spaces
mainly in view of the challenges provided by climate change
The purpose of this work was to analyze the modification of the landscape and multifunctionality of the urban watercourses in relation to socioeconomic and environmental scope of the evolution of an urban area using Lavras city
city's hydrographic grid was drawn from the digital elevation model (DEM) corrected by manual vectorization after field visits and analysis of high-resolution images
To understand natural and sociocultural evolution processes
a compilation of geo-historical information about the origin and formation of the city was made using Patchwork Quilt methodology
To understand the actions and perceptions of different actors from urban watercourses in Lavras
questionnaires were applied to the population
and interviews were directed to the public and private managers
It was observed that the watercourses and their surroundings lost a large part of their natural
The areas in expansion prioritize the natural function preservation but lack the incentive to implement the other functions such as social and economic
the implementation of green and blue infrastructure has not yet been prioritized
Even with the legislation that provides multifunctional uses for rivers and their banks
the urban watercourses from Lavras remained largely monofunctional
This did not contribute to increasing the city's green areas and the reintegration of watercourses into the urban landscape
The population values the water present in the urban landscape and yearns for multifunctional solutions such as green areas and urban gardens
Public and private actors recognize the lack of clarity in the legislation
and in the definition of concepts and techniques to be adopted
Multifunctional solutions can be in favor of reconciling different interests
promoting the reintegration of rivers into the urban landscape
Lavras is an example of a municipality that has land use and occupation conflicts in its PPZs (Reis et al., 2012). The city has an Index of Green Areas below to the one recommended by the Brazilian Society for Urban Afforestation (15m2/inhabitant), in addition, there is not a homogeneous distribution (Boldrin et al., 2016; Garcia et al., 2021)
the objective was to analyze the modification of the landscape and multifunctionality of the urban watercourses in relation to socioeconomic and environmental scope of the evolution of an urban area using Lavras city
This study allows to answer some questions as: How the evolution of the city's watercourses and surrounds occurred concerning the socioeconomic and environmental scope
How the changes in the uses and occupation of urban land around springs and rivers in a city
may be understand through a geo-historical analysis taking social dimensions
What is the perception of the population and public actors in relation to blue infrastructure in a city
The municipality of Lavras (B) Geographic location of the urban area of Lavras and its main basins (C)
The urban area of Lavras is mainly established on two micro-basins, the Ribeirão Vermelho and the Ribeirão Água Limpa, both tributaries of the Alto Rio Grande basin. The municipality's territory presents the montane seasonal semideciduous forest as the predominant forest formation, with areas of countryside, rupestrian field and cerrado (Carvalho and Scolforo, 2008) (Figure 1)
The study area was delimited based on Art. 4 of Law No. 12,651 of May 25, 2012 of the Brazilian Forest Code, which defines permanent preservation areas around watercourses and springs, with 30 m for watercourses <10 m wide, and 50 m for areas around springs (BRASIL, 2012)
Based on this law, and using QGIS 3.16.1 software (QGIS Development Team, 2017)
the city's hydrographic grid was drawn from the digital elevation model (DEM) available in the City Hall database
corrected by manual vectorization after field visits and analysis of high-resolution images
The springs were determined considering the beginning of watercourses
a buffer zone was created around springs and watercourses based on the limits imposed by the law
As this study focuses on watercourses crossing urban areas
only the PPZs around springs and watercourses that compose the two main hydrographic basins in the urban area of Lavras were analyzed: Ribeirão Vermelho and Ribeirão Água Limpa
The Master Plan of the city of Lavras, described by Complementary Law No. 097, of April 17, 2007, defines the delimitations of the urban zone (UZ) according to the availability of infrastructure, the densification capacity, and the degree of nuisance and pollution of the urban environment (PML, 2007). Also, it should consider areas that offer at least two urban services, such as sanitation, lighting, etc. (BRASIL, 1966)
only the urbanized area within the urban perimeter until the year 2019 was analyzed
The methodology aimed at analyzing how natural
materialize in the landscape of urban watercourses and how public policies contribute to this
three methodologies were combined: geo-historical landscape analysis
quantitative analysis of land use and occupation around watercourses and quali-quantitative analysis (questionnaires and interviews)
To understand the evolution of natural and sociocultural processes, a compilation of geo-historical information about the origin and formation of the city was made through bibliographies, iconographies, and topographic maps from 1898 to 1975, according to the Patchwork Quilt methodology (Paiva et al., 2021). Aerial photographs from 1958 to 2019 available at the Minas Gerais Public Archive (APM, 2021) were also used
as well as the personal archives of local historians
All maps and aerial photographs were georeferenced and processed based on the most recent images available, referring to the year 2019. Geoprocessing used the QGIS 3.16.1 software (QGIS Development Team, 2017) following the cartographic standardization proposed by Menezes and Fernandes (2016)
the changes in the landscape of watercourses and springs were analyzed according to the social
by identification in bibliographic records
a classification of land use and occupation was made through the method of visual interpretation and manual vectorization
They were quantified and separated into three categories:
• Impermeable areas—built up zones and/or paved areas with non-permeable surfaces
• Herbaceous vegetation and other permeable areas—herbaceous formations (lawn and pasture
gardens); wood plants formations such as vineyards and lianas (vines) and Zones with mineral material (rock-earth
• Arboreal vegetation (wooded spaces)—arboreal formations with a predominance of broadleaved and coniferous trees with variable surface (from woodland to forest)
The choice of this method is justified by the presence of shadow and high spatial resolution of the images, which hinders their automatic classification. Furthermore, specific landscape factors can be better interpreted visually (Antrop and Van Eetvelde, 2000)
The results obtained were related to the current environmental
and economic uses of these spaces in an attempt to identify possible combinations of uses in a functional way
with the implementation of green and blue infrastructures
These are provided for in the Urban Zoning of the Municipality for some areas around watercourses:
• Economic Activity Zone (Zona de Atividade Econômica—ZAE): areas suitable for diversified economic uses
in conflict with general residential use and suitable for installation along the main accesses to the city
• Special Zone of Historic-Cultural Interest (Zona Especial de Interesse Histórico e Cultural—ZEIHC): areas listed in the patrimonial inventory of the city
where it is necessary to protect cultural heritage
considering everything that comprises culture
• Special Zone of Urban-Environmental Interest (Zona Especial de Interesse Urbanístico e Ambiental—ZEIUA): areas of gullies in the urban zone
where the interventions necessary for their recovery combine urban and environmental interest
their urban parameters must be defined in each project
• Environmental Protection Zone (Zona de Proteção Ambiental—ZPA): areas protected by environmental legislation in force
due to their natural characteristics and/or the functions they play in the urban environment
A few examples are the protective strips of springs and watercourses
and areas with significant vegetation cover
as well as those the municipality considers important to protect
• Special Zone of Environmental Interest (Zona Especial de Interesse Ambiental—ZEIA): corresponding to the areas where interventions for the implementation of leisure and recreation areas and environmental recovery must be carried out
for which special projects must be developed
questionnaires were applied to the population and interviews were directed to the public and private managers
The local population and visitors took part in a survey
which sought to identify opinions about watercourses and the surrounding landscapes
Respondents should consider quality and accessibility
desired uses for these spaces and their relationship with green spaces and contact with gardens
This sampling considered a margin of 5% error
For the analysis, descriptive statistics of frequency distribution was used (Martins and Theóphilo, 2009), and the data were compiled and analyzed by the R software (R Core Team, 2016)
This combination of analyses, outlined in Figure 2, was performed using the Patchwork Quilt methodology (Paiva et al., 2021)

The hydronyms given to watercourses register characteristics identified by the Indians and pioneers at that time: Capivari (capybara river), Ingaí (ingá river), Faisqueira stream [gold ore in granules, “spark”), Grupiara stream (washed gravel)] (Németh-Torres, 2018)
The main gold mine of the village was known as “Real Grandeza” in a place called Tapera (which means “extinct village”) near where it is now the Madeira farm (Costa, 2015), on the banks of Ribeirão Vermelho, formerly called Faisqueira stream, the basin over which the city was developed (Figure 3)
Figure 3. Old bridge crossing the Ribeirão Vermelho in front of the Madeira farm. Source: Sousa R. B. et al. (2021)
Even though there is no precise definition of where the village was first settled, it is believed that the village might have started its development close to the mine situated on Northern region of the city, during the first half of the eighteenth century, expanding along the north-south axis (Németh-Torres, 2018) (Figure 4)
Figure 4. Formation of the urban area of Lavras in the Ribeirão Vermelho basin (eighteenth century). Source: Sousa R. B. et al. (2021)
Once gold mines in the village were exhausted, the inhabitants resorted to working with agriculture. Therefore, watercourses played an important role moving water mills for cattle breeding, providing irrigation for corn, rice, beans, castor beans, cotton, sugarcane, and tobacco, as well as fruit such as orange, jabuticaba (Myrciaria jaboticaba), pineapple, mango, cambuca (Plinia edulis), among other crops (Németh-Torres, 2018)
Until the end of the nineteenth century, the village did not have running water for basic needs, so the water used in the houses came either from springs and tributaries of the Ribeirão Vermelho, located in thalwegs, or from one of the six wells located in the lower parts of the city (Veiga, 1874)
From year 1855 on, the local government began to study alternatives to solve the water problem, trying to channel water from another stream in the Southern part of the village (Costa, 2015)
providing drinking water through 29 public and 103 private fountains
Some of these public taps (Figure 5) were built as fountains, the most famous of which was installed in front of the Mercês church (Delphim, 2020)

Because only a few families had a private fountain, most of the population would often wash and whiten their clothes in springs, such as Mata Cabrito spring. This spring received this name due to the habit of boys making barbecues of the goats that roamed around there (Delphim, 2020)
At the end of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century, the Ribeirão Vermelho and its banks received an important railway line connecting the industrial zone in the Northern part of the city to big centers as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (Luz et al., 2017). In the Northern area, the first bridges over the watercourse were built due to the great movement in the industrial zone (Figure 6)
Figure 6. Uses of watercourses and their surroundings until the first half of the twentieth century. Source: Sousa R. B. et al. (2021)
This region usually floods after heavy rains during the summer when water flows down the slopes and joins the tributaries of the Ribeirão Vermelho, damaging the houses in the neighborhood (Lopes and Goes, 2015)
A federal environmental law of 1965 (Law No
4,771) allowed the occupation of watercourse banks up to a limit of 5 m in distance from the edge of watercourses up to 10 m wide
which may have contributed to the occupation and impermeabilization around rivers in Lavras
and some watercourses were gradually obliterated

after the approval of the new Brazilian Forest Code
the local government mitigated this failure by requiring new settlements with at least 10% of the area destined to the green areas
and by demarcating and recovering PPZs for watercourses and springs
Between 2003 and 2014, the urban area of Lavras grew 28%, and despite the increase in arboreal vegetation in PPZs, soil sealing by buildings also continued to increase (Sousa R. B. et al., 2021)
27.74% of the watercourses in the urban zone of Lavras are channeled
The remaining 72.26% do not have any infrastructure to access
and have not been used for leisure and contemplation
being largely uncharacterized and often polluted by sewage from illegal constructions on their banks
The surroundings of the streams in the central zone are considered as a consolidated urban area
under the precept that they have lost their natural characteristics
which could be explained by the canalization of watercourses and solid waste management in the areas surrounding them
In order to identify how the land is used and occupied inside the urban PPZs of Lavras, an analysis was carried on august 2019. The urbanized area covered a surface area of 24.27 km2, 4.3% of the municipal territory. Ninety seven springs and 51.80 km of watercourses up to 10 m wide were identified, totaling a legal area of PPZs corresponding to 3.40 km2 within the studied urban perimeter (Figure 8)

According to Berque (1994, p. 17) “society perceives its environment as a function of the changes they make, and they change as a function of the perception they have”. The integration of a river into the city depends on factors such as economy, means of communication and transport, urban expansion projects, public policies, and the behavior of the inhabitants (Coy, 2013)
To understand how different segments of society perceive spaces around watercourses and whether there is an idea of multifunctionality
private and civil society were interviewed
men and 0.24% preferred not to identify their gender
The ages of respondents ranged from 18 to over 75 years
The average income of most respondents was between 1,000 and 3,000 reais (around $180 and $535) per month
which represents 37.32% of the total sample
97.13% resided in Lavras and 2.87% lived elsewhere
most respondents (24.13%) live in the city center
Figure 12. Perception of nature in green areas. Source: Sousa R. B. et al. (2021)
The respondents were asked to identify the three most pleasant environments
(B) a fountain surrounded by shrubs and statues
(E) a lawn with exposed rocks and vegetation with few leaves
The highest frequency was indicated for (F) a small lake surrounded by paths
followed by (C) a dam surrounded by vegetation (74.40%)
Two of the respondents' favorite options included water in different forms in the landscape (Lake
which may indicate the importance people give to the water element as a component of green spaces
94.49% of participants confirmed this importance
When asked which streams in Lavras they knew best
most respondents indicated Ribeirão Vermelho (62.44%)
Córrego do Centenário (33.25%) and Ribeirão Água Limpa (30.62%) followed by the Ribeirão Santa Casa (19.61%) and the Ribeirão Matadouro (18.18%)
The main relationship established between respondents and the landscapes of rivers and lakes in the city is for contemplative use (70.09%) (Figure 13)
Among respondents who said they do not like rivers
42.85% justified their choices due to poor water quality
28.57% thought it was dangerous and 21.42% said they did not have infrastructure
Figure 13. Most common uses for the rivers of Lavras. Source: Sousa R. B. et al. (2021)
In order to understand the uses respondents would expect of these places, the sense revealed that 67.70% of the interviewees suggest the construction of parks and gardens (GBIs), followed by revitalization and protection with restricted access (43.30%) and construction of bike paths (24.40%). The least indicated action was the closing and canalizing rivers (7.17%) (Figure 14)
Figure 14. Uses of watercourses desired by the population. Source: Sousa R. B. et al. (2021)
considering their contact with the countryside or agriculture
81.58% have already lived or had a close contact with life in the countryside
compared to 18.42% who neither have nor have had this experience
22.96% of the respondents have a garden and or a vegetable garden
For those who do not have a garden or a vegetable garden
When asked if they know of shared gardens in Lavras
These results may relate to what people would like to see built around urban rivers if they could participate in their management
given that 17.94% of respondents chose to buil urban gardens
To understand the respondents' habits
the preferred places to buy fruit and vegetables are open-air markets (60.52%)
to verify the preference for local products
95.21% would buy local products grown close to their homes
There is a limited participation of civil society in the elaboration of urban policies in Lavras (Andrade and Oliveira, 2019)
mostly built by representatives of the economic sector
to capture the perceptions of Lavras' stakeholders on the issue of watercourses in the city
representatives of the public sector were interviewed
such as the Department of Public Works (Interview 1)
a Candidate for Mayor for year 2020 (Interview 2)
and a member of Environment office (Interview 3)
a Forestry Engineer of a Construction Company in Lavras (Interview 4)
When asked about the perception of uses and occupations around watercourses
an interviewed from the private sector from Lavras (Interview 4) states that
all areas around rivers and springs must be isolated and protected (PPZs)
100% of the PPZs that are requested from us must be isolated without any possibility of interaction with the population
The current legislation of the municipality of Lavras treats a green area as a square
The level of interaction that exists among the population for the environmental use of a green area is a square
10 planted (Ipês—Handroanthus albus) and benches
It doesn't offer interaction opportunities as a linear park do
which you can sit on the grass and have a picnic
it's another kind of environmental service (Interview 4)
Among the difficulties encountered in defining uses for these areas
the respondent from the private sector also states that there is great difficulty dialoguing with public stakeholders and environmental councils
especially regarding the definition of concepts such as restoration and green area to be applied:
[...] there is an extremely harmful technical bottleneck..
but we find a much greater difficulty in the technical discussion of the councils
in the technical dialogue with secretariats
Restoration has different meaning for each one (Interview 4)
Given the difficulty defining these concepts, even among researchers (Bargos and Matias, 2011)
the specification of concepts and techniques is necessary
now about the management of PPZs by the public sector
the representative of the works department (Interview 1) mentions the reduced staff of the city hall and the difficulty establishing partnerships with universities as limitations
The city hall does not have a technical body to go “in loco” to check if there is a spring
so the responsibility falls on the Technical Manager of the developer
[…] I believe that from 2016 onwards
the delay for approval of subdivisions has been greater
one thing that is very well observed is the preservation of PPZs
we leave it to the entrepreneur (Interview 1)
When asking public sector representatives (Interviews 1
3) about the function of watercourses in the city
it was alleged that some springs preserved in the city still have a certain natural function; however
most watercourses in old settlements are seen only as drainage systems
the importance of specific legislation and a policy to invest in green infrastructure is emphasized:
The urban area is consolidated in many places
is something that brings some benefit to the population [...] There could be other leisure and environmental functions if there were one specific legislation and a mayor to invest in it (Interview 1)
Both for the representative from the public sector (Interview 3) and for the representative from the private sector (Interview 4)
the law is still not clear about the uses of PPZs in urban areas
there have been no actions to improve accessibility and interaction between inhabitants and the watercourses in Lavras
In an interview given to the public during the pre-election period in 2020
candidates expressed their opinion on how the city's flooding problems should be addressed
the solution would be to invest heavily in rainwater drainage and cleaning of channels to accelerate surface drainage
We have to invest heavily in rainwater drainage
No mayor likes to do it because it is a work that is done underground
but we did many kilometers of rainwater drainage
but if you do not maintain these streams that pass through the city
and remove weeds and stones from the path when the rainy season starts
we will have floods.[...] There are still some channels to close
but today the Local Environment Department prefers to maintain the channel open (Interview 2)
Following the hygienist model, the urban drainage system aimed at collecting and keeping rainwater away (Silveira, 2018)
This model remained in Brazilian cities until the end of the twentieth century
7.511/1986) changed the Brazilian Forest Code
extending the protection limits of watercourses to 30 m (for streams up to 10 m wide) and a 50-m radius around springs
which led to conflicts that persist nowadays
these areas were yet to receive any landscaping and urban treatment
According to Bueno (2006), in Brazil, new ventures insist on following old engineering and urbanism practices, obtaining environmental licenses to fill springs and floodplains, channel streams, thus creating large impermeable areas. This paradigm prevailed for decades in the urbanization plans of several cities, eliminating watercourses from the urban landscape, since they are considered “a health hazard” (Reynoso, 2010)
many of the areas surrounding watercourses and springs are undergoing a land regularization process
through the Urban Land Regularization Program (Reurb)
of 2017) provides for the multifunctional use of these areas:
“Public authorities shall formulate and develop policies for their competences in the urban space according to the principles of economic, social, and environmental sustainability and territorial ordering, seeking to occupy the land in an efficient manner, combining its uses in a functional way” (BRASIL, 2017)
The presence of arboreal and shrubby vegetation is also an important factor to be considered for the implementation of public green areas, since it plays ecological, scenic, and recreational functions. Furthermore, this type of vegetation improves the aesthetic, functional and environmental quality of the city, being endowed with vegetation and spaces free from waterproofing (CONAMA, 2006)
Lavras has a low green area index, GAI = 0.62m2/inhabitant (Garcia et al., 2021), considering that the minimum recommended value is 15 m2/inhabitant (SBAU, 1996). The city also has a low green space ratio (0.29%), and a disproportional distribution of green areas, with GAI close or equal to zero in the peripheral sectors, normally inhabited by low-income population (Garcia et al., 2021)
The idea of multifunctionality in green and blue infrastructure planning means the intentional combination of ecological, social, and economic functions, not only products of chance (Hansen and Pauleit, 2014)
considering that many areas around watercourses and springs do not have structures that allow access to recreational or educational use by the population
are not considered in the city's green area index
Analyzing the public areas in urban PPZs of Lavras
there are forest fragments without public access
sports spaces and institutional areas with little or no vegetation and permeability
and free spaces subject to invasion and solid waste management
A multifunctional alternative that has worked in several cities is the implementation of urban gardens in open spaces adjacent to PPZs
Around 40% of the inhabitants who answered the questionnaire do not have gardens at home
As an example, the housing project in Lavras brought multifunctionality to an area, previously used for solid waste management, through the construction of an urban community garden (Araújo et al., 2016)
Although other urban gardens have already been implemented in Lavras
this is the only one that currently remains active
Considering that one of the hypotheses of the city's origin was related to the exploitation of alluvial gold, as suggested by the city's name, the city's streams should be viewed as a natural site to be protected. However, according to the Lavras Cultural Collection Protection Inventory (PML, 2019)
there is still no protected natural site in the municipality
other than a tree (Tipuana tipu) in the city's main square
Although the revitalization and construction of green areas along the watercourses have been sanctioned for more than 10 years in the Master Plan (PML, 2007), solutions that contribute to that have not yet been implemented. Moreover, it is known that revitalizing watercourses is fundamental for benefiting ecosystem services, and not only for being used as draining and transporting sewage, residues, and flood waters (Selles et al., 2001)
According to the City Statute for Brazil (BRASIL, 2001)
the elaboration and implementation of Master Plans must occur with the participation of all segments of society
They should also define impacts on the various environmental
favoring the multifunctional use of areas susceptible to geological and hydrological processes
From the results obtained with the questionnaires, it is worth pointing out that, as shown in the analysis of land use and occupation, most of the uses determined in the urban zoning of the study area do not allow a simultaneous use of different functions such as, nature preservation, leisure, economic activities, which does not contribute to integration of rivers into the city. According to Soga et al. (2015)
people who live close to multifunctional areas
The largely contemplate use can be explained by the poor quality and accessibility of these spaces declared by 64.83% of respondents. In a small proportion, 16.51% believe access to rivers is easy but poor in quality, 11.72% of respondents consider them inaccessible, but of good quality. Only 5.02% were satisfied with the quality of and accessibility to river landscapes and 1.91% did not have an opinion (Figure 15)
Figure 15. Opinion on quality of and accessibility to streams of Lavras. Source: Sousa R. B. et al. (2021)
Despite the poor quality and difficult access to spaces around the rivers
the population values water as an important element in the composition of green spaces
the conditions in which these spaces are do not meet the population's expectations in relation to the water element in the city
Although the public sector in several cities has already realized the potential of the areas surrounding watercourses for carrying out works of common interest, to improve the city's image and its attractiveness for high quality investments (Coy, 2013; Lotfi et al., 2017)
such as public green areas and other green infrastructures
have not yet been used in the city of Lavras
On the other hand, Cengiz (2013) and other authors recommend avoiding rigid artificial systems
as they make it possible to restore the natural functions of watercourses
prevent erosion of the banks and the canalization of the stream's bed
In this context, watercourses and their geomorphologies form “landscape systems” that should comprise all types of management involving the landscape. In different scales, landscape systems have unique elements, with the potential to exert changes to contribute to the lost balance between man and nature in urban centers (Hoyuela Jayo, 2017)
There is a limitation in the legislation that does not emphasize exactly what must be done and confirmed by an actor's opinion (“the legislation is flawed”, Eng. Forestier—real state agency CAP). Thus the coverage of watercourses ends up being allowed. An important point to be consider is the necessity to know and connect the desires of the population with the decisions to be made by public actors. Observing the results on Figure 14
Only 7.18% indicated that the water courses should be used as channels for urban drainage
Most indicated the desire to build green areas
there are some the difficulties encountered in defining uses for public areas
and there is great difficulty dialoguing with the public actors and environmental councils
they highlighted the importance of developing a specific legislation and a policy to invest in green infrastructure
the importance of the green and blue infrastructure in recognized both population and public actors
demanding connections and join decisions to preserve and also create areas
it was possible to observe that after the 1980s
the watercourses present in the consolidated areas in the center of Lavras underwent major changes
but maintaining only their drainage functions
From the implementation of the new Brazilian Forest Code in 2012
the areas in expansion prioritize the preservation of the natural function
but lack the incentive to implement the other functions such as social and economic
Despite current legislation providing for the multifunctional use of watercourses and their surroundings
many have a predominance of one function over the others
Others are monofunctional and do not contribute to reintegrating watercourses into the urban landscape of Lavras or to improving the population's quality of life
Public and private actors recognize the lack of clarity and specificity of current legislation
regarding the possible uses of these urban spaces
The government has not yet managed to implement green and blue infrastructures (GBIs) to reconcile the natural
and economic functions of streams and creeks
but still allows the use of techniques for sealing soils and canalizing watercourses
Lavras does not have an established blue infrastructure
considering that the existing watercourses are not used by the population with social and economic functions
The lack of information about these spaces and the difficult access to them contribute to the lack of clarity in the lagislation
Participatory approach and transdisciplinary processes could help stakeholders and sensitize the population to the importance of urban rivers and their multifunctional role
The methodology used and the positive results
indicate that this study may be replicated in any city and may help local managers to plan strategies for green and blue infrastructure concerning the area evolution and population aims
this work can also be used as a study case that reflects the interaction of urbanization in Brazil associated with watercourses that cross the urban area

one of the holiest sites of Eastern Orthodox Christians
Tensions are on the rise at a prominent Orthodox monastery in Kyiv where the monks are facing eviction later this month
The Ukrainian government accuses the monks of links to Moscow
even though they claim to have severed ties with the Russian Orthodox Church following Russia’s full-scale of invasion of Ukraine
A believer holds a candle as she prays at a sarcophagus with holy relics in the underground labyrinth of the Monastery of the Caves
People pray at a sarcophagus with a holy relic in the underground labyrinth of the Monastery of the Caves
People pray at the entrance to an underground labyrinth with holy relics in the Monastery of the Caves

Metropolitan Clement talks to the Associated Press in the Monastery of the Caves
People pray at a sculpture of founding monks of the Monastery of the Caves
People pray at sarcophagi with holy relics in the underground labyrinth of the Monastery of the Caves
Also busy Friday were people in civilian clothes
furniture and other items from the buildings — helping the resident monks remove belongings of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church
before a threatened government eviction on March 29
There also were police officers checking the cars to make sure no one was removing items that belong to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra preserve
The dispute is part of a wider religious conflict playing out in parallel with the war
The parliament is considering a “draft law on making it impossible to operate in Ukraine religious organizations affiliated with centers of influence in the Russian Federation” — which could impact the UOC
The UOC has insisted that it’s loyal to Ukraine
has denounced the Russian invasion from the start and has even declared its independence from Moscow
But Ukrainian security agencies have claimed that some in the Ukrainian church have maintained close ties with Moscow
They’ve raided numerous holy sites of the church and later posted photos of rubles
Russian passports and leaflets with messages from the Moscow patriarch as proof that some church officials have been loyal to Russia
where a Ukrainian Orthodox priest was filmed talking about the “awakening” of Russia
The Ukrainian government has said the Lavra
is a hub of “Russian world” propaganda — an ideology touting Moscow’s political and spiritual hegemony over neighboring Slavic lands such as Ukraine
But now it’s ordering the Ukrainian Orthodox Church out of the premises entirely
The complex has been called the “pearl of Ukraine” and the “Vatican” of Ukrainian Orthodoxy
and the agency overseeing the property notified the UOC earlier this month that as of March 29
it was terminating the lease allowing the free use of religious buildings on the property
The government claims that the monks violated their lease by making alterations to the historic site and other technical infractions
which do not have relevant documents and permits
The legality of such new buildings also raises legitimate questions,” Ukraine’s minister of culture
“The state must manage what belongs to it.”
The monks of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church dispute this
they’re moving out what possessions they can in preparation for a possible forcible eviction
“We understand that we will not be given the opportunity to function properly and therefore we need to remove certain things and prevent their destruction,” said Metropolitan Clement
the monks said they won’t leave Lavra under any circumstances
said lawyers for the UOC appealed to the Ministry of Culture to provide documents explaining its reasons for breaking the agreement
the ministry informed them that such documents won’t be provided
because they have been marked for official use
The government’s eviction order doesn’t explicitly say the monastery could be turned over to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine
issued a statement directed at the Lavra monks
The eviction won’t put an end to monastery worship and ministry at the complex
Metropolitan Epiphany said services will continue and be conducted in their ancient Slavic language along with modern Ukrainian
“The current affairs of the monastery will be managed by those who know the traditions and life of the monastery … and who have not tarnished themselves with devotion to the ‘Russian world,’” the metropolitan said
Epiphany claimed that the UOC is a “tool of hybrid aggression against Ukraine.”
Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture sought to offer similar assurances that Lavra’s monastic life would continue
cites the termination of the UOC’s lease as further proof that Russia’s actions over the past year in Ukraine are justified — claiming that Russia is defending a beleaguered Orthodox population
head of the Russian Orthodox Church who backed Moscow’s invasion last year
has asked Pope Francis and other religious leaders to intervene in the Lavra controversy
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church has been ultimately loyal to the Moscow patriarch since the 17th century
though it has had broad autonomy and has strongly denounced the Russian invasion
The independent Orthodox Church of Ukraine received formal recognition in 2019 from the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople
who has the top position of honor in Orthodoxy but not the universal power of a pope
Kirill hasn’t recognized the OCU as legitimate
The UOC itself declared full independence from Moscow last year
But the OCU and its supporters say that the UOC retains strong ties and sympathies to Moscow
The changes in the works at the Lavra received mixed reactions from frequent visitors who were at the complex on Friday
who refused to be identified with his last name
He said that the UOC is clearly connected to Russia
but he personally hadn’t heard any church propaganda
and he plans to attend UOC services elsewhere
But the changes were welcomed by Oksana Naumenko
who has been working for years in the academy located in the Lavra complex
She said it fulfilled one of her lifelong dreams of having the singing and prayer at Lavra happen in the Ukrainian language
“It is very large-scale and global event in our history
It is possible that not everyone realizes this,” she said
“But perhaps our children will know at what price our religion and language are being acquired.”

To assess the effect of tibial compression on radiographic cranial tibial translation measurements in healthy dogs and those with cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture and establish specific criteria for the radiographic diagnosis of CCL rupture
Dogs were divided into 3 groups with 20 dogs each: group 1
2 images of the stifle joint in mediolateral projection were taken
of which 1 was conventional and 1 was under tibial compression
Variables were measured in each radiographic projection: the patellar ligament angle
the angle of tibial translation measured by 2 different methods
and the linear distance between the points of CCL origin and insertion (DPOI)
tibial compression significantly changed most of the variables in the within-group comparison
The variable DPOI were not different with and without tibial compression in the group of healthy adult dogs but were different for dogs with CCL rupture
these are important parameters in the diagnosis of CCL rupture
dogs with CCL rupture could be distinguished from healthy dogs at a high level of specificity and sensitivity
DPOI ratio values above 1.18 were consistently indicative of CCL rupture
thus allowing for a precise radiographic diagnosis of the condition
The aim of this study was to assess the specific quantitative parameters of cranial tibial translation that allow for a radiographic diagnosis of CCL rupture in dogs
A comparative analysis was conducted to assess the effect of TC in radiographs of the stifles of healthy adult dogs
The hypothesis was that dogs with ligament rupture exhibit significantly different values compared with those for healthy dogs in the analyses of radiographic images taken under TC
a novel variable was proposed for the quantitative diagnosis of rupture: the ratio of the distance between the points of CCL origin and insertion
obtained from radiographs taken under TC and without TC
The present study was submitted to the Ethics Committee on Animal Use of the Federal University of Lavras
and approval was granted under protocol No
The study was conducted in the facilities of the University Veterinary Hospital
and it was divided into 2 phases of dog selection
a retrospective study of radiographic images of dogs with a surgical diagnosis of complete unilateral CCL rupture was undertaken
a prospective study with selection of young and adult dogs without CCL rupture was performed
Initially, the inclusion criteria for the study of dogs with CCL rupture were determined and comprised radiographs taken under no sedation or anesthesia and with adequate positioning, the absence of other musculoskeletal injuries, and body weight between 15 and 40 kg, taking into consideration the epidemiology of the disorder according to one previous study,3 irrespective of sex
The following radiographic positioning criteria were established: mediolateral projections of the affected pelvic limb with the radiographic beam centered over the stifle and presence of a conventional radiograph with no TC (NTC) and a radiograph taken under joint stress by means of TC
with visibility of the talus bone to delineate the tibial mechanical axis
overlapping femoral condyles with a maximum gap of 2 mm between their borders
to obtain the radiographic image with the stifle joint positioned at approximately 135°
the joint was correctly angled with the aid of a goniometer
which allowed the uniformity of stifle joint position
while the stifle joint was maintained in the proper position
the tibiotarsal joint was flexed to 90° to promote cranial translation of the tibia
a search was carried out of all medical records of patients operated on in the service with complete unilateral rupture of the CCL between 2015 and 2018
The search subsequently excluded data from dogs that did not fit the clinical and radiographic inclusion criteria
The remaining medical records and surgical files were carefully analyzed
excluding those in which there was a description of exacerbated medial buttress
the radiographs of 32 dogs with the condition were selected
9 dogs did not have adequate overlapping of the femoral condyles
and 3 dogs had clinical records of previous stifle joint surgery
Meniscal injury seen at surgery was not an exclusion factor
radiographs of 20 dogs could finally be included in the study
corresponding to the group of adult dogs with CCL rupture
the selection and radiographic examination of 20 healthy adult dogs and 20 healthy young dogs were undertaken prospectively
Dogs were determined to be healthy after orthopedic and radiographic examination by an experienced professional
and those exhibiting any type of musculoskeletal disorder were excluded
The inclusion criteria for the group of healthy adult dogs were a body weight between 15 and 40 kg and an age between 18 months and 6 years
Healthy young dogs were aged between 6 and 10 months
One pelvic limb per healthy dog was randomly selected and radiographed
and no type of sedation or anesthesia was used
The radiographic positioning criteria applied were the same as those used in the group of dogs with CCL rupture
and mediolateral radiographs were also taken in 2 projections: NTC and TC
Radiographs of 60 dogs were included for the study and divided into 3 groups with 20 dogs each: group 1 (G1)
adult dogs with CCL rupture; and group 3 (G3)
Radiograph measurements were conducted by 2 experienced radiographic interpreters blinded to the animal groups
it was measured 3 times at different time points
and the mean of each variable was used for statistical analysis

Additionally, cranial tibial displacement in relation to the femur was measured according to the method proposed by the authors of a previous study.3 Conventional mediolateral radiographic images and those taken under TC were used to measure the distance between the point of origin of the CCL in the femur and the point of CCL insertion in the tibia (DPOI; Figure 4)
the site considered as the CCL origin in the femur was localized at a point adjacent to the distal aspect of the lateral fabella on the caudal border of the proximal femoral condyle (caudal-proximal point of the Blumensaat line)
The site of CCL insertion in the tibia was located at the cranial border of the medial tibial condyle
Considering the variations in weight and anatomical conformations and because this is a linear measure
the authors of the present work proposed a ratio dividing the DPOI value obtained from the radiograph under TC by the DPOI value from the conventional radiograph
thus generating the new variable DPOI ratio to eliminate the bias caused by dog variation
Figure 4Radiographic images (mediolateral projection) of the stifle joint of a dog
taken under conventional positioning with no tibial compression (NTC) and with tibial compression (TC)
showing the distance between the origin and insertion (red line) of the cranial cruciate ligament
note that this animal had tibial displacement of 5.6 mm
All the obtained data were tested for normality (Shapiro-Wilk test) and homogeneity (Bartlett test)
Parametric variables were assessed with ANOVA
and differences in the comparison of data from each variable were considered significant at P < .05
The effect of radiography performed under TC was tested in all assessed variables within each group with the paired t test
each variable (except for DPOI ratio) was tested for differences (Tukey multiple comparison test) with and without TC on radiography among the 3 dog groups
The DPOI radio was not normally distributed
and the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were chosen to assess significant differences between groups
each variable was identified according to radiographic positioning (ie
either conventional radiography NTC or under joint stress with TC)
Intraclass correlation coefficient and CI of each variable were used for interobserver analysis
and to predict the diagnostic value of DPOI ratio
regression analysis was conducted with a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve to establish a diagnostic cutoff point for this variable
Mean and SD were calculated for all variables
images from 13 males and 7 females with a mean body weight of 33 kg (SD ± 4.6 kg) and a mean age of 4 years (SD ± 2.8 years) were selected
images were taken of dogs with a mean body weight of 37 kg (SD ± 7.1 kg) and a mean age of 6 years (SD ± 3.2 years)
among which 12 were females and 8 were males
radiographic images of 11 females and 9 males
with a mean age of 7 months (SD ± 1.8 months) and a mean body weight of 29 kg (SD ± 3.5 kg)
Statistical significance of radiographic measurements obtained under TC was found among most variables within groups
This result showed that DPOI could achieve higher precision in differentiating dogs without CCL rupture when measured under TC because joint stress did not interfere with the results of these variables within G1 due to ligament integrity
both regarding the linear measurement for DPOI and the DPOI ratio
was between those for G1 and G2 (G1 < G3 < G2)
the evaluation of DPOI showed that TC promoted minimal cranial tibial displacement in healthy adult dogs
moderate displacement in healthy young dogs
and pronounced displacement in dogs with CCL rupture
The results of the comparative analysis among the 3 groups are shown (Figure 5)
In the comparative analysis among the 3 groups regarding patellar ligament angle
there was no difference among them using TC
there was no difference among the groups for patellar ligament angle
which showed no significant difference between the groups

dogs with cranial cruciate ligament rupture (G2)
[E]—Distance between the origin and insertion (DPOI) of the cranial cruciate ligament
different letters mean statistical difference among groups
The ATTa values obtained without TC were significantly different among the groups (P = .002)
and the same occurred for this variable in radiographs with TC
in which the 3 groups exhibited significant differences among each other (P < .0001)
Comparative analysis of ATTb revealed statistical results similar to those obtained for ATTa (ie
all groups exhibited statistically significant differences from each other in both radiographic positions
DPOI without TC was considered nonsignificant between the groups
The comparison of this variable between groups under TC showed significance
and the greatest value difference was found between healthy adult dogs (G1) and those with CCL rupture (G2)
The pronounced cranial tibial translation in dogs with CCL rupture increases in a linear manner with increasing DPOI
The analysis of DPOI ratio revealed significant differences among all the groups (P < .0001)
an ROC curve predictive analysis indicated 100% specificity and 99.9% sensitivity for this ratio in the comparison of the healthy dogs with dogs with CCL rupture
An accuracy of 1.0 for a DPOI ratio > 1.18
with no interpolation of results whatsoever between dogs in G1 and in G2
a cutoff point to differentiate G3 from G1
with 100% of specificity and 85% of sensitivity
young dogs should be differentiated by assessing an intermediate DPOI ratio value together with other factors
such as the detection of open epiphyseal plates in radiographic images and signs of degenerative joint disease
The results showed that G3 always exhibits intermediate values
with a trend toward similarity with G1 in cumulative frequency analysis
The results obtained with the diagnostic test showed that DPOI ratio has high potential as a CCL rupture diagnostic measure, given that it exhibited high specificity and sensitivity, with better differentiation of healthy dogs. In the present study, DPOI ratio values above 1.18 were sufficient to accurately confirm the diagnosis of CCL rupture, completely differentiating dogs in G2 from healthy adult and young dogs (G1 and G3) (Figure 6)
Figure 6Multiple comparison analysis graph of the variable DPOI ratio in healthy adult dogs (G1)
an intraclass correlation (ICC) above 0.75 was considered excellent
between 0.4 and 0.75 was considered satisfactory
The results of this analysis showed that more complex measurements with a higher number of anatomical reference points were the most susceptible to variation when assessed by different professionals
Patellar ligament insertion angle and ATTa showed ICC of 0.32 and 0.25
and DPOI (ICC = 0.88) showed values that indicate a high correlation between the measurements performed by different evaluators
These data showed that it is better to choose simpler but equally efficient radiographic measurement parameters to be used as the standard in CCL rupture diagnosis
whereas TC renders cranial tibial displacement more evident
The lack of a difference between the means for G1 and G2 (P = .3027) is in agreement with the result from studies8,11 that show the variation in PLA is not significant when dogs with and without CCL rupture are compared
There is no significant difference in this variable between G1 and G3 (P = .1500) and between G2 and G3 (P = .3000)
It shows that this parameter is not useful for the evaluation of CCL rupture and was unable to differentiate tibial translation in dogs with ligament rupture from healthy adult dogs and puppies
the ATTb results cannot be compared with any data from the literature; however
these data will prove useful for future comparative studies and clinical applications
The angle of cranial tibial translation has been described in only 1 study and only in healthy dogs, with no comparison whatsoever. Nevertheless, this study9 serves as a basis for future comparative studies
The ATTb is a modification proposed in the present study and
can be included in the evaluation of tibial translation and used for comparisons between patients and between radiographic positioning methods
even though its values varied according to changes in the ATTa and both variables exhibited P values < .0001
the ATTb demonstrates the advantage over the conventional ATTa method
as it is simpler to measure the tibial translation angle since 1 less line is needed to obtain this measurement
among the assessed angles and according to statistical analysis
and the patellar ligament insertion angle should be considered together due to the notable differences found in G2; however
there is no diagnostic impact on performing TC regarding the angles of tibial translation
Measuring the ATTa and the ATTb is more complex
diagnosis via patellar ligament insertion angle and DPOI measurements is simpler and more objective
obtained from conventional radiographs and those taken under TC
proved to be sufficient to add a very high degree of accuracy to the diagnosis of CCL rupture
Even though dogs with a predetermined body weight range were assessed in the present study
the results might be extrapolated to dogs of all sizes
patient values for different weight ranges and
for different breeds should be experimentally determined
DPOI ratio can be extrapolated with higher efficiency because it eliminates the bias of animal size and the comparative value of this ratio does not change due to size
a DPOI ratio value of 1.18 can be considered a standard index for the diagnosis of CCL rupture
according to the results obtained in the present study
One limitation of this study is that radiography was performed under no sedation or anesthesia of the patient
which might have hindered adequate positioning of some more agitated or aggressive dogs
only dogs with a surgically confirmed complete CCL rupture were included
possibly exhibiting only a torn craniomedial or caudolateral band
Further studies are needed to compare such measurements in patients with complete and partial CCL rupture
aiming to identify a cutoff point to separate these groups
The authors declare that there were no conflicts of interest
The authors thank the Federal University of Lavras and the CAPES for the master’s scholarship

Zelensky has given the monks of Kiev’s most sacred Orthodox monastery until next week to evacuate
Tens of thousands of Kiev residents took to the streets earlier this week in protest and prayer
The reason was an announcement on March 10 by the Zelensky government that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) would have to relinquish control of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra
a large monastery complex that includes the Holy Dormition cathedral and monastery
The monks have been given until March 29 to leave
The lavra was founded in 1051 and is the spiritual home of Orthodoxy in Ukraine
It fell into disrepair during the Soviet era
The Holy Dormition cathedral was turned into an anti-religious museum
and many structures in the complex were destroyed
the UOC slowly repaired the damaged buildings and rebuilt the lavra into a thriving religious site
It is that church that the government is now evicting
The Zelensky government says that Orthodox Ukrainians are still free to worship with the smaller
The OCU was set up during the Poroshenko years as a nationalist scheme by thoroughly uncanonical means that are still not recognized by many other Orthodox churches (including the Orthodox Church of America
the canonicity of the Church and its unity are central to worship
Perhaps the best parallel would be when Maoist China offered Catholics the chance to join the Communist-affiliated Catholic Patriotic Association
which did not accept the primacy of the Roman pontiff
Everyone realized that this was no substitute.
The 200 monks and 300 seminarians who make the Kiev monastery their home have vowed they will not be forcefully removed when the March 29 deadline comes, one saying, “It is our shrine, our home, we will not leave it of our own free will.”
The Zelensky government’s culture minister, Oleksandr Tkachenko, has said that there are no plans to use violence to evict the monks
according to Archbishop Victor Kotsaba of Baryshivka of the UOC
independent “radicals” will descend on the lavra when the deadline arrives.
“The brotherhood are not prepared to abandon the monastery come March 29 as this is not based on any laws
they will come to the lavra to evict the brotherhood by force,” he says
“Unless the government acts to bring order and safety there will be a clash and confrontation
For that reason we hope that the government will correctly act in this matter.”
Archbishop Victor appealed to the government to stand for basic religious freedom:
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church is the church of the Ukrainian people
We have categorically condemned Russian invasion of Ukraine and supported our sovereignty
We hope the Ukrainian government will support human rights to allow its citizens the freedom of conscience
The UOC’s governing body met on Monday and all nine members went as a group to seek a meeting with President Zelensky
Zelensky’s press secretary told them they would not be seen.
The United States funds the Zelensky government
Unless we act now and ensure our tax dollars are not used to pay for religious persecution
next week Kiev will be filled with videos of loyal Ukrainians being arrested
simply for wanting the right to pray according to their consciences
What better propaganda videos for Putin will there be than that?

Ukraine (AP) — The Ukrainian government has taken the main cathedral of the revered historic monastery from the church previously affiliated with Moscow’s patriarchate and allowed its Ukrainian rival to use it for Orthodox Christmas services
Ukrainian Minister of Culture Oleksandr Tkachenko said Thursday that the Dormition Cathedral and the Refectory Church of the nearly 1,000-year-old Pechersk Lavra — also known as Monastery of the Caves — in the Ukrainian capital have been taken over by the state after the lease of them held by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) expired on Dec
Tkachenko said that the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) — the similarly named rival church — asked for and was granted permission to conduct the service at the cathedral on Saturday when Orthodox Christmas is celebrated
the Orthodox Church of Ukraine received recognition from the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople
Moscow’s and most other Orthodox patriarchs refused to accept that designation that formalized a split with the Russian church
which remained loyal to the Moscow patriarch since the 17th century
declared independence from Moscow’s Patriarchate after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
The UOC gave Moscow a liturgical cold shoulder by dropping the commemoration of Moscow Patriarch Kirill as its leader in public worship and blessing its own sacramental oil rather than use Moscow’s supply
But Ukrainian security agencies have claimed that it has maintained close ties with Moscow
They have conducted numerous raids of the church’s holy sites
Russian passports and leaflets with messages from the Moscow patriarch
Prominent Ukrainian Orthodox Church leaders have rejected the allegations of ties with Moscow
insisting that they have loyally supported Ukraine from the start of the war and that a government crackdown will only hand a propaganda coup to Russia

The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra now houses a dismantled fragment of a wall with the work of the world-famous street artist Banksy
About this reported the press service of the National Reserve "Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra"
The graffiti with the image of a woman with a fire extinguisher and curlers on her head
was intended to draw attention to the brutality of Russian aggression
the work was preserved and is now in the so-called "open funds" of the Lavra
Next to Banksy's modern work
you can see ancient Russian graffiti of the 1950th century - a caricature of one of the builders of the Assumption Cathedral
This combination of ancient and modern art makes it possible to trace the duration of the cultural struggle for the preservation of Ukrainian identity
The exact location of Banksy's graffiti in the Lavra is not revealed - visitors are invited to find it on their own
"Look for Banksy in the Lavra to see how his anti-war protest
finds a place in a thousand-year-old shrine," says the reserve
Banksy is a name recognized around the world
although his true identity remains a mystery
political activist and director from Great Britain
he became a symbol of protest and irony embodied in graffiti
Starting out as a vandal who decorated the walls of British streets in the 90s
Banksy has become an artist whose works are now valued at tens of millions of dollars at auctions in the UK and America

After the termination of the lease, the Culture Ministry ordered the church members to vacate the Lavra in March 2023. The clergymen contested the order and even blocked authorities from accessing the monastery
which appears to be part of the actions that the SBU referred to as a "mass provocation."
In August 2023, a court ordered the UOC-MP to return the Lavra's property to the state
The SBU said that the individual in question faces several charges and could serve prison time if convicted

Air Force Veteran Rosaire Bushey is the public affairs officer at the Salem VA Health Care System
Veteran of the Day
Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Navy Veteran John Lavra
servicemembers to see service in World War II
John Lavra was called to active duty two days later and went on to become one of only 171,000 U.S
Lavra flew more than 5,300 hours in more than 22 types of aircraft from propeller-engine fighters and cargo planes to jets
the 95-year old will waste no time in telling you which was his favorite: “the Spad.”
18-cylinder attack plane will forever be linked to Lavra
he launched from the deck of the USS Essex and 69 years later
his voice speeds up in the retelling of his longest day
“I got hit at something like 10,000 feet and couldn’t get out of the damned airplane
‘what the hell do you think I’m trying to do here’?”
Lavra’s ordeal is documented in his Navy Survival Report dated Nov
where he describes with precise military detail the events of the day
“The next thing I know there was flame all over
I grabbed the stick with both hands and tried to keep the airplane flying; I tried to … gain as much altitude as possible
… As soon as she whipped into a left spin
I realized I wouldn’t be able to do anything with it
I remember looking for the canopy release handle
… I pulled it back – the canopy came open with no strain
The fire increased quite a bit then and the heat was something terrific
I tried not to breathe any flames if I could help it
I felt as if I was hung up or that the plane had slapped me back in the cockpit because I fell back in a sitting position
I started to look down to see if anything was holding me and about that time
… It came right at my face
so I sort of turned and shut my eyes – when I opened my eyes again
I noticed my goggles were gone and so was most everything else
but I … didn’t know how much altitude I’d lost
I reached for the D ring and couldn’t find it
… I couldn’t see it or any part of my harness
(I’d bailed out once before at El Centro and received a heavy jolt
I had just started to reach for the risers when I hit.”
Today Lavra has six children, 18 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. His daughter Valerie Lavra was a nurse at the Salem VA Medical Center for 17 years

World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev
Dr Jerry Pillay expressed concern and sadness upon hearing about alleged actions taken against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) against the background of the Russian invasion of Ukraine
During a recent solidarity visit to Ukraine
the World Council of Churches delegation visited Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
one of the largest such historical and cultural preserves in Eastern Europe
“It is unfortunate that such actions – including with regard to the UOC’s monastic community of the ancient Dormition Kiev Caves Lavra – appear to target the church itself,” said Pillay
“The actions being taken against the UOC do appear to raise genuine questions with regard to respect for freedom of religion or belief.”
while the WCC has condemned the Russian invasion of the sovereign nation of Ukraine
the WCC also emphasizes the importance of protecting the presence and witness of the church wherever it is found
“The WCC will monitor this situation closely
and respond appropriately in accordance with the principles of international human rights law and the protection of religious freedom,” said Pillay
the WCC continues to encourage dialogue for peace
including among its member churches and ecumenical partners in Russia
Pillay reiterated the belief that Christian leaders can and must bring light
we plan to convene a roundtable with church leaders from the respective countries
with the latter objectives in mind,” he said
“May the God of love and peace guard and guide us during these difficult times as we pray for Christ’s love to move us to justice

KYIV — Near the entrance to the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra
an 11th-century Orthodox cave monastery complex in the heart of the city
Wednesday is the deadline for the monastery’s 1,000 inhabitants to leave what was their home amid heightened political concerns that some of them were too close to Moscow
The police inspected the departing vehicles to ensure that none was loaded with the more than 800 icons
crosses and other priceless artifacts stored within the religious complex
Three women — all inhabitants of the Lavra — sat on a bench not far from the lower caves of the monastery
One asked her comrades: “Where are we going to sleep
“It’s as if they are taking our home,” another of the women told POLITICO
and others like you for playing with his will,” she said angrily
The high-profile eviction is just the latest installment in the bitter schism dividing Orthodox believers in Ukraine
Moscow’s satrap in Ukraine. This left the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC)
The expulsions from the Lavra technically come as part of the termination of a 10-year-old agreement on the free use of religious buildings and other state-owned property that the monastery signed in 2013. This was brought to an end after a special government commission found out about numerous violations of the rent terms by the holy tenants
because of anger in Ukraine that some clergy from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church collaborated with Russian invaders
We are taking some things out just in case there will be some forceful eviction or capture
Just to make sure that at least shrines and other things are not damaged,” Archbishop Iona
the head of the youth department at the church
“Now the caves are full of people, praying
There was no open call for the defense of the Lavra
Ukraine’s Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko ordered the monks of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to leave all premises of the Lavra, but said that Ukrainian authorities would not use force against the monks if they miss the deadline. He also said if the monks want to stay
they just need to transfer their allegiance to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine
more than 1,236 religious communities and monasteries have announced the transition from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine
Only some 4 percent of the Orthodox faithful now identify with the Moscow Patriarchate
according to a study by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology think-tank
Most of the clerics from Lavra Moscow Patriarchate Church still do not recognize the Orthodox Church of Ukraine
even though Constantinople’s Patriarch Bartholomew granted it independence in 2019
Metropolitan Onufriy of the Russian-linked Ukrainian Orthodox Church claims his church is the only genuine one in Ukraine
As soon as the Russian full-scale invasion began
the Ukrainian Orthodox Church announced it had parted ways with the Russian Patriarchate and stopped praying for Russian Patriarch Kirill
“It was Cain’s murder of his brother Abel,” Iona said
mirroring the Russian narrative about Ukraine and Russia being “brotherly nations.”
However, in November 2022 a video from a prayer in Lavra appeared
where parishioners were praying for Russia
Last year, the Security Service of Ukraine, also known as the SBU, conducted searches in various buildings of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate
the SBU is investigating some 60 criminal proceedings against pro-Russian clerics from the Moscow Patriarchate
many of whom are suspected of collaboration with the Russian occupying army in various regions.
“Only a few priests have indeed collaborated
It is not right to apply collective guilt to a church
There were also collaborators among SBU and other organs
But the government chose to attack the church,” Archbishop Iona said
adding that collaborators could be found in every sphere
even including within the ranks of the SBU
Just days before the deadline for the monks to leave
the spiritual head of the world’s Orthodox Christians, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew
hardened his stance towards the Moscow Patriarchate
saying during a trip to Vilnius that Russia’s Orthodox Church shared responsibility for the conflict in Ukraine
“The church and the state leadership in Russia cooperated in the crime of aggression and shared the responsibility for the resulting crimes
like the shocking abduction of the Ukrainian children,” Bartholomew
said on March 22 during a conference the Lithuanian capital
In what was taken as a clear criticism of Russian Patriarch Kirill
Bartholomew said the Kremlin has been using the Moscow church as an “instrument for their strategic objectives.”

Monks of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church expelled from Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery are refusing to leave
amid a dispute over their government-ordered eviction
The Ukrainian government has accused the religious order of supporting Moscow and maintaining links with the Russian Orthodox Church and ordered the monks to leave the site by last Wednesday at the latest
Yesterday we received a letter from the UN
we can stay in Lavra until the court is over
until the decision is made by the court," said the Vicegerent of the Lavra Metropolitan Pavel
Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery is the seat of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC)
Authorities in Kyiv claim that the monks violated their lease by making alterations to the historic site and other technical infractions - which the clerics deny
The Ukrainian government has been cracking down on the UOC over its historic ties to the Russian Orthodox Church
has supported Russian President Vladimir Putin in the invasion of Ukraine
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that Moscow was closely watching events in Kyiv:
We condemn the pressure that is being exerted on the clergy and on the Russian Orthodox Church
then everything will depend on their decision
I have no doubt that no one in Russia will remain indifferent to their fate
The dispute over Ukraine's most revered Orthodox site is part of a wider religious conflict playing out in parallel with the war
His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon issued the following statement on the developments at the Kyiv Caves Lavra. His Beatitude also sent a letter to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom on these developments
The Orthodox Church in America encompasses clergy and faithful from numerous ethnic backgrounds
and our parishes and dioceses share in ethnic traditions from many local Orthodox Churches
our local Church has a special historical relationship with the holy traditions of Orthodox Christianity originating from the churches of Rus
and the mother city of all the peoples and churches of Rus in general
Thus it is with special concern that we observe the recent developments in the relationship between the civil authorities of Ukraine and the monastic brethren from the Kyiv Caves Lavra
the motherhouse of monasticism in Rus and in Ukraine in particular
On behalf of the clergy and faithful of the Orthodox Church in America
We continue to pray for the people of Ukraine and condemn all violent aggression
including the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine’s sovereign territory
While recognizing the legitimate need of states to ensure their security
we also decry restrictions on the religious freedom of any group in Ukraine and especially denounce any generalized religious persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church under His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufriy
that the Orthodox Church in America stands ready to support the Ukrainian Orthodox Church
both with our prayers and by any other means at our disposal
