Buffet-style restaurants aren’t new to Southern California: Locals have fond memories of meals at popular soup chain Souplantation (which closed all of its locations in 2020 due to the pandemic) and its countless imitators, as well as the many Chinese buffets in the San Gabriel Valley that offer rows and rows of selections
Residents of the Inland Empire, the sprawling (and growing) region about an hour east of downtown Los Angeles
will soon have another massive buffet restaurant at which to pile their plates with all sorts of dishes and flavors
Boasting of being the largest buffet chain restaurant in the Southwest United States
Lin’s Grand Buffet is opening its first California location in the city of Murrieta on Thursday
American classics and an array of desserts
The Murrieta location is a whopping 11,538 square feet and offers seating for 346 guests
which could be a draw for big groups and families
which has 14 locations in Texas and Arizona
“Expanding into new markets like California is a testament to our vision for growth and our commitment to forming strong relationships and partnerships with the local community,” Lin’s Grand Buffet chairman Tim Zhou said in a news release
“We’re proud to work closely with our local partner Jennifer Lin to bring the high-quality and affordable dining experience that Lin’s is known for to Murrieta.”
Although Lin’s doesn’t have any other specific locations planned in California
a rep confirmed that the company hopes to open more
one thing’s for sure: Murrieta residents had better come hungry

CCTV: The world is closely following the devastating impact of the Trump administration’s tariff hikes on other countries
China and the EU have recently had quite a lot of high-level exchanges
Could you share with us the communication and coordination between China and the EU on additional U.S
uses tariff as a weapon to exert maximum pressure and seek selfish gains
and puts its own interests over the public good of the international community
which severely hurts the interests of China
China and the EU collectively account for over one third of the global economy and more than a quarter of global trade
Both sides are advocates of economic globalization and trade liberalization
and firm defenders and supporters of the WTO
The head of the EU underscored the vital importance of stability and certainty for a sound global economy
free and WTO-centered multilateral trading system
and the sound and steady development of global trade and economic relations
which is in the interest of both sides and the rest of the world
China has already taken resolute measures and will continue to do so to safeguard its legitimate interests
China stands ready to work with the international community
We will not only safeguard respective interests
kept changing its tariffs policy and for now granted exemption on part of Chinese imports
Lin Jian: The spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce has made clear China’s view on this
Facts have shown and will continue to show that there are no winners in a trade war or a tariff war and protectionism will lead nowhere
to quit maximum pressure and resolve issues through dialogue on the basis of equality
China News Service: Foreign Ministry Spokesperson recently said China will take firm countermeasures against the U.S.’s additional visa restrictions on Chinese officials determined to be substantially involved in the formulation or execution of policies related to access for foreigners to “Tibetan Areas.” Could you share more details on these countermeasures
Lin Jian: Xizang affairs are purely China’s internal affairs
The U.S.’s arbitrary visa restrictions on Chinese officials under the pretext of the Xizang-related issues violate international law and basic norms governing international relations
In accordance with the Law on Foreign Relations of the People’s Republic of China and the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law of the People’s Republic of China
China decided to impose visa restrictions on U.S
personnel who have acted egregiously on the Xizang-related issues
We welcome friends from foreign countries to visit
travel and do business in China’s Xizang region
we oppose any country or individual using human rights
religion and culture as a false pretext to meddle in Xizang affairs
We oppose interference and sabotage by people with ill motives who would use visits to Xizang as an opportunity to engage in such activities
Antara: Indonesia and China celebrated the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations yesterday on April 13th
In his exchange of congratulatory messages with President Prabowo Subianto
the Chinese leader stated that we should enrich the China-Indonesia community with a shared future and it serves as a model of solidarity between major developing countries
amid the current complex and turbulent international landscape
what opportunities can be further explored to deepen cooperation between the two countries
Lin Jian: Yesterday marked the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Indonesia
President Xi Jinping and President Prabowo Subianto exchanged congratulatory messages
spoke highly the development of bilateral ties
and stressed that they will firmly support each other’s national development outlook
jointly advance along our respective modernization path
We have full confidence in a better future of the growth of China-Indonesia relations
Both China and Indonesia are major developing countries and important forces in the Global South
The cooperation between the two countries has strategic significance and global influence
Amid increasing turbulence in the international landscape
the all-round strategic cooperation between China and Indonesia is all the more important
As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of our diplomatic ties

China Daily: In his remarks at the 2025 Central American Security Conference in Panama City
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth blatantly peddled the “China threat” narrative and made aggressive remarks on China’s military and companies
must prevent war by robustly and vigorously deterring China’s threats in the Western Hemisphere
Deputy Secretary Landau made clear to El Salvador the importance of collaboration on 5G
and stressed the need to prevent China from accessing it by only allowing trusted vendors
officials are steeped in ideological bias and the Cold War mentality
There is not a single word of truth in them
Who sees Latin America and the Caribbean as a backyard and forces the “Neo-Monroe Doctrine” on them
Who keeps pointing fingers at the domestic affairs of these countries
Who’s been coercing them with tariff threats
Who’s engaged in massive global surveillance
Who’s got military bases all over the Western Hemisphere
Who’s letting small arms and light weapons and ammunition flow into Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace
The world knows full well the answer to these questions
China’s cooperation with Latin American and Caribbean countries is South-South cooperation
It is always aimed at giving each other support and never driven by geopolitical calculations
China is committed to equality and mutual benefit in engaging with these countries and never seeks sphere of influence or targets any third party
keeps vilifying China and peddling the so-called “China threat” in order to cook up a pretext to justify their action to control countries in this region
AFP: Russia launched a missile attack against the Sumy region in Ukraine yesterday
President Donald Trump called it “terrible” while other leaders have also condemned that
Lin Jian: China’s stance on the Ukraine crisis is consistent and clear
Dialogue and negotiation is the only way out of the crisis
AFP: The UK government this weekend said that it was taking control of British Steel from the Chinese company Jingye
The UK’s Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds also said that it was “naive” for Britain to allow the steel industry to fall into Chinese hands
Does the Foreign Ministry have a comment on the takeover and then also on the Business Secretary’s comments on the deal
the Jingye Group you mentioned is a private Chinese enterprise that has business cooperation with the UK side on the basis of market principles
As for the current difficulties arising in the operation of British Steel
the two sides should resolve them through consultations in the principle of mutual benefit
We hope that the British government will treat Chinese companies investing and operating in the UK in a fair and just manner
protect their legitimate rights and interests
and refrain from turning economic and trade cooperation into political and security issues lest it should undermine the confidence of Chinese companies in their normal investment and operation in the UK
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited China
which received extensive and close attention
When speaking to the press during the trip
he noted that the aim of the visit is to consolidate Spain’s relations with China and enhance dialogue and cooperation with China
He also stressed that Spain and the EU support free trade and stand ready to work with China to address global challenges
What’s your comment on the visit by Prime Minister Sánchez
Lin Jian: This is Prime Minister Sánchez’s third visit to China within three years
The visit is a great success and demonstrates the firm willingness and determination of China and Spain to further grow the bilateral ties
President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Sánchez and Premier Li Qiang had talks with him
Leaders of the two countries had friendly and in-depth exchanges of views
The two sides jointly issued the Action Plan for Strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
and proposed to build a more strategically resilient and dynamic comprehensive strategic partnership
to better serve the well-being of both peoples
and make greater contributions to world peace
Leaders of the two countries had in-depth and strategic communication on the growth of bilateral relations
They agreed to continue to respect and support each other
Spain reaffirmed its commitment to the one-China principle
They stressed the importance of leveraging their complementarity in cooperation
and tapping the potential in emerging areas like new energy
artificial intelligence and digital economy
They underscored the need to explore the rich historical heritage of the two ancient civilizations
give a stronger boost to cooperation in such areas as culture
and carry forward the deep bond between the two peoples fostered through the Olympics and panda cooperation
They also exchanged views on China-EU relations
and international and regional issues of mutual interest
They stressed the need to boost the steady development of China-EU relations
and stay committed as each other’s partner for mutually beneficial cooperation
Both China and Spain are positive supporters of multilateralism and open cooperation
It is important for the two sides to uphold free trade and steady global economic order
President Xi Jinping noted that as the international situation gets more complex and volatile
it is increasingly important for China and Spain to develop sound and stable relations
to firmly stand on the right side of history
firmly oppose unilateralism and protectionism
defend the common interests of the international community and provide more confidence and driving force for world development and prosperity
AFP: The UK’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy said that he was deeply concerned after a British Member of Parliament was denied entry to Hong Kong last week
He said he would raise the issue with the Chinese authorities
I just wonder if the Foreign Ministry could say why this MP was denied entry or provide any more details
And also what’s the Ministry’s response to the UK Foreign Secretary’s concerns
Lin Jian: The Hong Kong SAR government has stated its position on that
Let me stress that border entry is a matter within a country’s sovereignty
The Hong Kong SAR government has the authority to handle individual cases of entry in accordance with relevant laws and policies

Lin’s artwork has been featured in solo exhibitions at museums and galleries around the world
with works in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art
She is a recipient of the National Medal of Arts and the Presidential Medal of Freedom
In opening a 50-minute photographic tour of some of her creations
Lin said she views her work as a tripod: art
“I will always talk about all three,” she said
Bodies of water and wave forms have often occupied her
resulting in museum pieces and site-specific installations
Lin told the story of how she built the wave fields and how each one got larger
she was inspired by a photo of “a naturally occurring repetitive waterway” called a Stokes wave
‘I have to make a piece about this,’” she said
The result became “The Wave Field,” a 10,000-square-foot patch of grassy waves
“You could … curl up in a wave and read a book until the sprinklers pop up,” she said
Even after that project was finished in 1995
Maybe it’s because I range a bit in my medium
allows me to explore an idea and change scale
she wanted to continue experimenting with wave forms
“They were very concerned about snipers,” she said
so she made the waves in the resulting work
creates ripples within the sand.” Its waves are smaller
but its footprint is triple the size of the Michigan piece
Her wave work crested in 2009 with the final work in the series
which covers four acres of a former gravel pit at the Storm King Art Center in New Windsor
The waves in “Storm King Wavefield” are 12-to-18-feet high
what happens if I could make a wave field where you would get lost
and I had to create a dialogue with the faraway hills
Anything else looked miniature and didn’t really relate to the landscape it was in.”
Her three wave fields offer insight into her artistic process
often having to assure them that their answers might not end up in the artwork
“I call it a fishing expedition,” she said
“Because the site isn’t just a physical site
And how can I reflect that within the work itself?”
Other aspects of nature and the environment have also inspired Lin
She has done a series of “Earth drawings” in Sweden
she installed 49 dead Atlantic cedar trees in Manhattan’s Madison Square Park for a piece called “Ghost Forest” intended to highlight the effects of climate change
She is working on what she says is her last memorial
the work calls attention to the crisis surrounding biodiversity and habitat loss
I can get you to rethink what the problem is or put it in a way that you’re not expecting,” she said

Ivan Lins (left) performs with Jane Monheit and the Pacific Jazz Orchestra on Jan
composer and arranger Chris Walden brought to fruition — and to the stage — an ambitious idea whose time had come
who has become an in-demand musician in Hollywood since moving from his native Germany
launched the multitiered Pacific Jazz Orchestra
a unique hybridized concoction mixing a traditional big band setting with strings
and adding that crowd-appeal factor of vocalists in the mix
the grand project is possible because Los Angeles is home to some of the world’s finest musicians
and those players and singers are available for concerts within driving distance around the region
Getting the large 40-piece ensemble on the road is another matter for another time
although a compact 17-piece edition played at Blue Note Tokyo
the PJO settled into a fitting thematic focus recently
paying tribute to the important and distinctively melodic Brazilian singer-songwriter Ivan Lins
the project landed in the swanky atmosphere of Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa
an impressive and elegantly conceived edifice designed by architect Cesar Pelli and a prize among West Coast concert halls since 2006
Guest spots turned to supple singer Jane Monheit — who has worked with Lins — and smooth jazz guitarist Lee Ritenour
including on “Harlequin,” a natural set list entry here
In this aggregation well-stocked with strong players and an embarrassment of soloing riches
the standouts of the night included ever-tasteful pianist Josh Nelson
the bold saxophonist Kirsten Edkins and the young tenor sax dynamo Jacob Scesney
who has a sure instinct for building interesting and surprising solos
The program opened with Walden’s lyrical tune “No Bounds,” segueing into a Ritenour feature
“Agua de Beber,” showcasing the guitarist’s signature soft-burn eloquence
tinged with Wes Montgomery-esque echoes and a strong Brazilian bent
The latter factor kicked off the concert’s second set
Lins brought his graceful presence to the stage
singing in his characteristic clear-headed and open-hearted style behind a digital keyboard
His music fares well in the lush textural palette of the PJO’s structure
as on the Walden-arranged pieces “Rio de Maio” and a hypnotic Lins jewel
“Começar de Novo,” given lithe form through Monheit’s treatment
with Lins on Jim McNeely charts of “Desesperar Jamais,” “Dinorah Dinorah” and a buoyant Lins “hit,” “Madalena,” with Ritenour joining in the song’s blithe spirit
memorably transformed into a signature piece for the late chromatic harpist Toots Thielmanns
the protagonist role was taken on by Tom Scott
making a cameo on an electronic wind instrument
Scott’s part made up in expressive elan what the instrument’s timbre lacked in organic
Walden and Lins extended compassion and concern for those affected and directly victimized by the devastating Los Angeles wildfires
The victim list has taken its toll on many L.A.-based musicians who have lost their homes to fires
including direct links to the PJO family: arranger Vince Mendoza (who created the charts for Lins’ “Ai
Ai” and “Daquilo que eu sei,” two highlights of this show) and PJO’s versatile violinist Charlie Bisharat
Walden asserted to the crowd that “music can be therapeutic
and can provide solace and comfort.” PJO’s Segerstrom concert offered up ample solace and comfort
jazz energies and an inspiring dose of the magic Lins conjures
“This is one of the great gifts that Coltrane gave us — he gave us a key to the cosmos in this recording,” says John McLaughlin

Lin’s 4-Under Paces Beavers In Final Round At Thunderbird Collegiate April 12
Elyce Lin-Gracey ramped things up by scaling back her pre-competition routine at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Hungary
Her less is more approach paid dividends as the 17-year-old earned the bronze medal

Three weeks after the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships 2025 concluded in Debrecen
When most 17-year-olds would be celebrating a bronze-medal finish or looking forward to completing their senior year of high school
Lin-Gracey was eager to get started at the U.S
Figure Skating-sanctioned World Junior training camp
postponed after the devastating crash of American Airlines Flight 5342
that non-stop hunger is typical of the rising star
she’d put the music on again and do another full run-through,” Gambill said
She’d do a full run-through until she got it right
Lin-Gracey learned that lesson the hard way
After a start to her 2024–25 campaign that included two top-seven finishes in her Grand Prix Series debut and personal-best scores across the board to win the Nebelhorn Trophy
junior bronze medalist settled for an eighth-place finish at the 2025 Prevagen U.S
“I was nervous about everything [at that event],” Lin-Gracey said
“I was trying to put out a performance like Nebelhorn
and I don’t think that mindset — telling myself I had to skate like Nebelhorn — was the right mindset to have going into a competition.”
she was ready to try again — only this time
I reevaluated my training,” Lin-Gracey said
we tried some different training plans and I learned that less is more
you have those two minutes or so before you compete
I learned let’s not do 15 triple Lutz-triple toes in those moments
Let’s set a max at two in the six-minute warm-up
Let’s use that time to keep myself calm and know that I have to fight through the entire program.”
‘You’re only allowed this much.’ We practiced that before Junior Worlds
She had to trust herself a little bit more
Instead of having to keep feeling it and keep feeling it
she had to mentally trust herself that she knew she could do it
because she was limited on what she had to do
The adjustments paid off with two solid skates and the first World Junior medal for a U.S
the arts and crafts enthusiast regained her momentum and is now armed with a working strategy heading into the Olympic season (which just so happens to align with a planned gap-year after her graduation from California Online Public School this spring)
“I think last year was a good learning process for her,” Gambill said
“We know what works and we know what doesn’t now
This Junior Worlds was one of the strongest fields I’ve ever seen
and I’ve been to quite a few Junior Worlds before
I think the way she handled herself was pretty fierce
she handled the media and she didn’t let anything affect her
Although her music selections for the 2025–26 season weren’t yet finalized in Boston
Lin-Gracey hopes to step outside her usual short program box and show more maturity in her free skate
her mindset toward her goals have shifted since the start of last season
I’m pretty sure every lady wants to make the Olympic team,” she said
I’m not going to tell myself I need to skate like Nebelhorn
or even that I need to skate like Junior Worlds
I want to continue training the way I did before those events
and hopefully that will lead to performances like those consistently the whole season
She received a little inspiration from training camp and the 2025 World Championships
“I’m glad she’s able to see this level of skating before she hopefully gets to be there next year,” Gambill said
“I want her to know that she’s competitive with these girls
You always come home a little bit more motivated to get back to business.”

Professor of medicine Bryant Lin has been named this year’s keynote speaker for the School of Medicine’s graduation on Wednesday
Last spring, Lin was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, a period he described as “very chaotic.” A nonsmoker himself, Lin called his diagnosis “the irony of all ironies” as one of the research areas of Stanford’s Center for Asian Health Research and Education (CARE), which Lin co-directs, was lung cancer in non-smoking Asians. This fall, Lin taught a course on his battle with the disease
the only medical center at a top US university dedicated to advancing Asian health globally
alongside professor of medicine Latha Palaniapann M.S
He is also director of Medical Humanities and Arts for the Center of Biomedical Ethics and served as the medical director of Stanford’s diagnostic clinic
the then-called Consultative Medicine Clinic
Lin first came to Stanford in 2005 for postdoctoral research and a biodesign fellowship and joined primary care faculty in Stanford Hospital in 2006
He said he was “very surprised” to be named graduation speaker.
“I had no inkling that I’d be chosen,” Lin told The Daily.
Lin described his journey with cancer as a “unique experience.” “It’s one thing to know theoretically or secondhand what a patient goes through and a very different thing to experience it oneself,” he told The Daily
Lin’s greater appreciation for the patient experience was part of what inspired him to start his class MED 275: From Diagnosis to Dialogue
a course where Lin shares his journey with lung cancer “from both a patient and a doctor perspective.”
dean of the school of medicine and vice president for medical affairs
Bryant Lin embodies the very best of Stanford Medicine — compassion
and a deep commitment to education,” Minor wrote in a statement to The Daily
“His voice is one of extraordinary wisdom and humanity
and I can think of no one more inspiring to address our graduates this year.”
“I think he’s the perfect graduation speaker,” said Isabella Delbakhsh ’28
a former student in Lin’s introductory seminar MED 53Q: Storytelling in Medicine
students explored different mediums for helping patients tell their stories.
Being able to create his own classes is one reason Lin has enjoyed his time at Stanford
“I know of no other place where a medical school faculty can start a class that is open to all students,” he said
“He was always positive and relaxed and he felt like a grounding force,” Delbakhsh said
She described Lin as “empathy in a person” and the “best professor” she has ever met at Stanford
Lin said he reflects more on how to spend his time each day and if the things he is doing are bringing him joy
Do you choose to live with happiness and with hope and with dreams
or do you choose to focus on the negative?”
“I think he will influence every class I take and the choices I make — just making sure they’re not wasted,” said Delbakhsh
Delbakhsh told The Daily that “it’s just crazy to think that I could graduate and he could not be here.”
When looking to the future for the current graduating class
Lin said that recent political developments are having “a huge impact on our graduating class
and the concern is that because of the environment with funding and the government in the US
people may decide not to go into a career of science.”
Lin stressed the importance of technology and research
crediting it with him being able to talk and teach without coughing or being short of breath
In February, the NIH announced that it will reduce funding for indirect costs in research grants
Stanford expects that this will lead to a $160 million annual loss
posing a major challenge to scientific research at the University.
Lin said the current period of political backlash against scientific research “may be painful” but that people “have to learn to navigate new areas and figure out new sources of funding.” “It may be difficult
but I think we’ll figure out a new way forward… I have great faith in young people,” Lin said
said that she is nervous to choose a pre-med path
“[Lin] made me feel like what I’m studying and what I’m choosing to do with my life is very fluid; it’s not rigid,” she said.
Lin said “it should be fun” and that he is going to do “some unusual things.”
Lin said he feels “extraordinarily lucky.”
“I believed before I was sick and I still believe that I am the luckiest man on the face of the Earth,” said Lin
“I keep being lucky [because] Dean Minor and his team were kind enough to pick me as their graduation speaker.”

The two sides made negative remarks related to China on the issues of the East China Sea
the South China Sea and the situation across the Taiwan Strait in the joint statement
Japan colluded with NATO to groundlessly interfere in China’s domestic affairs

Japan’s military and security moves have been closely watched by its Asian neighbors and the international community
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-fascist War
stay committed to the path of Asia-Pacific cooperation
and play a constructive role in upholding and promoting peace
development and prosperity in the region and beyond
Spearheading NATO’s drift into the Asia-Pacific will not do Japan any good
China Daily: It’s reported that experts pointed out that the U.S.’s shiprider agreements with Fiji and other Pacific Island countries only grant the U.S
These agreements provide a backdoor for the U.S

Lin Jian: China noted the shiprider agreements signed between the U.S
relevant law enforcement right and jurisdiction concerning fishery matters belong exclusively to the coastal states
By signing shiprider agreements with some Pacific Island countries
gets a major say and could even take over in these countries’ coastal law enforcement
putting a serious dent in the maritime legal order provided by UNCLOS
Despite the ostensible reciprocal expressions in some agreements
relevant Pacific Island countries have no capability at all to exercise the same rights as the U.S
China always respects the sovereign rights and exclusive jurisdiction that coastal states enjoy in their exclusive economic zones in accordance with international law
exercises strict supervision over distant-water fisheries
and carries out cooperation on the conservation and use of fisheries resources with relevant countries on the basis of equality and mutual benefit
China opposes any country resorting to political manipulation
interfering in other countries’ affairs or driving a wedge between other countries under the pretext of combating the so-called illegal
AFP: Taiwanese prosecutors have said that they have charged a Chinese cargo ship captain for violating the telecommunications management act by destroying submarine cable-related facilities
Does China have a response to this latest development
Lin Jian: This is not a question related to foreign affairs
Global Times: It’s reported by American media that Chinese officials indicated to their U.S
dialogue on cybersecurity last December that it was behind cyber attacks on key U.S
infrastructure and linked it to the U.S.’s support for Taiwan
Top Trump administration officials have said the U.S
will pursue more offensive cyber strikes against China
Lin Jian: This report is filled with lies and misinformation highly inconsistent with facts
When it comes to “Volt Typhoon,” China has clearly denied the U.S.’s groundless accusations on various occasions
side the reports released by Chinese cybersecurity institutions and pointed out the relevant cases are just vilification and scapegoating against China by U.S
on various occasions that China opposes the U.S
using the cyber issues to interfere in China’s internal affairs and America’s attempt to use the Taiwan question to contain China is doomed to failure
Let me stress that China has clearly expressed concerns to the U.S
administration authorizing the Pentagon to conduct cyberattacks on other countries of their own accord
on America’s cyberattacks on China’s key infrastructure
the cyber and military cooperation between the U.S
to take a responsible attitude and avoid miscalculation
China will take what is necessary to safeguard its own cybersecurity
AFP: The White House has confirmed now that many Chinese imports into the United States face cumulative tariffs of up to 145 percent
Does the Chinese side have any response to this
And will China raise import tariffs again on imported American goods
Lin Jian: China has repeatedly stated its solemn position on the tariff issue
China does not want to fight these wars but is not scared of them
truly wants to resolve the issue through dialogue and negotiation
it should stop maximum pressure and capricious and destructive behavior
is determined to fight a tariff and trade war
We’ve taken countermeasures against the bullying behavior of the U.S.
not only to safeguard our legitimate rights and interests
but also to uphold international rules and order
the common interests of countries in the world
AFP: I’m just wondering if the Chinese side can give any updates on the visit by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to Beijing today
Lin Jian: Relevant information will be released in due course
Arab countries held an emergency summit in Cairo to discuss the Palestinian question
and proposed the Arab plan on the recovery and reconstruction of post-conflict Gaza
Lin Jian: China supports the effort by Egypt and other Arab countries to promote the continuous and effective implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement
advance humanitarian assistance and restore security and stability there
We support a post-conflict governance plan in Gaza that is recognized by the Palestinian people and embodies the consensus of Arab countries
The plan must follow the principle of “Palestinians governing Palestine” and align with the two-State solution so that Palestine and Israel will live side by side peacefully and there will be lasting peace in the Middle East
the 78th United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proposed by China to establish the “International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations” by consensus
Secretariat has launched a special website (in English) for the “International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.” What is China’s comment on this
the resolution proposed by China to establish the “International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations” was adopted at the 78th United Nations General Assembly by consensus
This marks a successful practice of China’s Global Civilization Initiative put forth by President Xi Jinping
and represents a significant contribution to promoting dialogue among different civilizations worldwide
as well as advancing global peace and development
The special website for the “International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations” launched by the U.N
recently will help promote the common values of humanity
raise public awareness of respecting diversity of civilizations
and draw attention to finding solutions to global challenges
the international community will celebrate the first “International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.” As the initiating country
China stands ready to work with the international community to actively implement the spirit of the UNGA resolution
jointly promote exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations
better safeguard world peace and foster common development through dialogue among civilizations
and make unremitting efforts to advance the building of a community with a shared future for mankind
AFP: President Donald Trump today made an address to the U.S
He said he had received a message from President Zelenskyy to help end the war in Ukraine
He also repeated some statements to the effect that he hopes to see greater U.S
control over the Panama Canal and Greenland
Do you have any comment or any further remarks
China’s position on the Ukraine crisis is consistent and clear
Dialogue and negotiation is the only viable solution to the crisis
China supports Panama’s sovereignty over the Canal
and stays committed to maintaining the status of the Canal as a permanently neutral international waterway
China has never engaged in the management and operation of the Canal
The so-called China’s control over the Canal is nothing but a lie
China always believes that relations between countries should be handled in accordance with the purposes and principles of the U.N
A similar remark was made by the Chinese Ambassador to the U.S
we made clear China’s serious position on the issue
is bent on using the fentanyl issue as a flimsy excuse to raise tariffs again on Chinese imports
China has made clear its opposition more than once and has taken legitimate and necessary countermeasures
then the right thing to do is to consult with China on the basis of equality
mutual respect and mutual benefit to address each other’s concerns
has other agenda in mind and if harming China’s interests is what the U.S
to stop being domineering and return to the right track of dialogue and cooperation at an early date
China-Arab TV: Also on the emergency Arab summit held in Egypt yesterday
European leaders also held an emergency summit on the Ukraine crisis in London
The two emergency summits have one thing in common: they both rejected remarks from the U.S
Do you have any comment on the recent statements made by the United States
Lin Jian: I’ve stated China’s position on the emergency summit held by Arab countries
China noted that there are new developments concerning the political settlement of the crisis
we always follow the four points about what must be done which were proposed by President Xi Jinping
China hopes that relevant parties can find a sustainable and lasting solution that takes into account each other’s concerns through dialogue and negotiation
Reuters: An investor group backed by BlackRock has agreed to buy a majority stake in the Hong Kong-based company that runs ports along either side of the Panama Canal
firm control of key docks in that area amid pressure from the White House
Does the Ministry have any comment on this
Lin Jian: We have no comment on the relevant commercial deal
The government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region made a response to the operation of the ports by the relevant Hong Kong company
Let me say more broadly that China supports Chinese companies
Hope they can have access to a fair and just business environment everywhere they go
We oppose any abuse of coercion and pressuring in international trade and economic relations

Stanford Medicine’s Bryant Lin
a primary care doctor who has turned his personal cancer journey into a real-time educational opportunity
will be this year’s keynote speaker at the School of Medicine’s graduation ceremony
Lin was not quite 50 when he learned he had advanced metastatic lung cancer
The director of the Medical Humanities and Arts program turned that tragic turn of events into a lesson for the Stanford University students — and the world — by telling his story
MED 275: From Diagnosis to Dialogue: A Doctor’s Real-Time Battle with Cancer
open to undergraduate as well as graduate students
The course took place in the fall quarter of 2024 and was overflowing with people who wanted to learn about his journey
Multiple national news outlets covered the course as well as Lin’s open-book approach to coping with such a diagnosis
Guest speakers included Natalie Lui, MD, assistant professor of cardiothoracic surgery who runs the lung cancer screening program at Stanford Medicine; Lin’s primary care doctor, Paul Ford, MD; his oncologist, Heather Wakelee
who spoke about supporting a terminally ill spouse
The class also covered the high rate of his type of cancer among Asians. Lin, co-founder of Stanford Medicine’s Center for Asian Health Research and Education
hopes knowledge about the higher risk among Asians will encourage better screening policies
“It’s an honor you would want to sign up for my class,” he told students on the first day
“My dream is that you will go into cancer care
It would be great if even just one of you dedicated some part of your career to cancer.”

The Ugly Vegetables by Grace LinCover illustration for the picture book The Ugly Vegetables (1999) by Grace Lin.(more)An editor at a publishing house saw her drawings and wanted to know if she had a story to go along with them
Those drawings turned into The Ugly Vegetables (1999)
a picture book about a Chinese American girl who learns to appreciate the garden of Chinese vegetables that she and her mother have grown
The book was an American Booksellers Association “Pick of the List.”
In 2001 Lin married Robert Mercer, who, unbeknownst to them both, had also attended the Rhode Island School of Design at the same time as Lin. Mercer was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma that same year
Lin continued to write children’s books but with a more business-minded approach because of the financial pressures brought on by her husband’s illness
and each follows a young Asian protagonist as she tries to come to terms with her multicultural background
he and Lin raised $100,000 for Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute by auctioning off snowflakes painted by children’s book authors
They called the project Robert’s Snow: for Cancer’s Cure
Lin took a break from the project and handed the reins to the institute
Lin’s book Mulan: Before the Sword (2020) relates an adventure of the legendary Chinese heroine
a modern folktale revolving around the joy of reading
Lin’s Propane Trucks, located in Dighton, Massachusetts
added Joey Runnels as its new Southern regional sales manager
native moved to Mississippi at the age of 10 and later attended school to become an automotive mechanic
Runnels found himself back in Louisiana and working on a dredge boat for six months before transferring to Corpus Christi
as a mechanic and worked his way to the fabrication shop as a welder/fitter for 12 years
he transferred to material control as the supervisor
then to the engineering department as a project manager
and he finally landed as the vice president of operations 21 years later
Runnels spent 44 years at Mississippi Tank Co
before beginning his new job at Lin’s Propane Trucks
Runnels hopes to “bring a larger presence of Lin’s Propane Trucks in the southern part of the United States with a high-quality built bobtail.”
Runnels expressed his gratitude to Lin’s Propane Trucks for the opportunity and is excited to begin his new role
Runnels and Lin’s Propane Trucks will be at the 2025 Southeastern and International Propane Expo in Charlotte
Lin’s Propane Trucks began in 1980 when founder Lin Johnson decided that he wanted a 500-gallon truck
after Johnson was “not taken seriously” while shopping for a truck
he commissioned his friend Norman Gravel to build him one

The two have been collaborating since 1993
and it was deeply impressive and moving to hear their obvious rapport
who made a stunning impression during his early days in the U.S
His DMA recitals at NEC featured three books of the Clavierübung and both books of The Well-Tempered Clavier
and he made his mark with a series of superb Bach recordings
he also became an outstanding interpreter of Beethoven and French music
Schepkin’s erudite and fascinating program notes provided just a couple of the multitudinous joys we experienced
This reviewer is hard pressed to surpass his brilliant writing and is always tempted to just quote large chunks of it
Lin is perhaps best known as a BSO violinist (she joined at age 22) and violinist of the Muir Quartet since 1998
but it wasn’t until Friday evening that I realized how fabulous she is
Nothing in her stellar and fascinating résumé prepared me for the utter beauty and grace of her music making
The duo opened most expressively in Debussy’s transcendentally lovely Violin Sonata
the last work he wrote (winter of 1916–17)
It is the third sonata for diverse instruments that Debussy composed—following his Cello Sonata and the Sonata for Flute
Viola and Harp—and the last work of his that he performed
He didn’t live to finish his projected cycle of six sonatas
Debussy wrote that the fourth sonata should be for oboe
Debussy envisioned a concerto where the sonorities of the “various instruments” combine
with “the gracious assistance of the double bass.” Debussy wrote the Violin Sonata despite his advancing cancer and the horrors of the First World War
He proudly signed all three sonatas as “Claude Debussy
Many of Glissando’s concerts feature a composer or two for a theme
This concert paired Debussy and César Franck
and Fugue (1884) intimations his subsequent masterworks: the Symphonic Variations for Piano and Orchestra
and the Violin and Piano Sonata—it remains Franck’s most viable solo piano piece
A deified professor at the Paris Conservatory
Schepkin seems to have a deep affinity for this treacherous piece
and played it as if it were one of his favorites
Schepkin gave a gorgeous interpretation of Debussy’s “Reflets dans l’eau,” the sublime opening piece of his First Series of Images
This five-minute gem has all I love about Debussy: the masterful use of colors
as well as its languorous and seductive beauty
This reviewer has never been a big fan of the wildly popular Violin Sonata by Franck (1886)
transcribed for innumerable instruments who yearn for a big showpiece
until I heard Lin and Schepkin give it their all
I particularly was moved by the fourth movement
to find oneself loving something I once summarily dismissed as overplayed and over-romantic
It is a tribute to these two dazzling musiciains that everything they offered on Friday I wanted to reprise for me…soon!
Glissando will next appear on February 28th
celebratiing Bach’s Partitas 4 and 5 and Ravel’s Chansons madécasses with Gigi Mitchell-Velasco
as well as the two-piano versions of Ravel’s Rapsodie espagnole and La Valse with the annual appearance of Ian and Erin Lindsey
Schepkin essays Schumann’s Symphonic Etudes and Debussy’s Twelve Etudes

Categories Reviews 10 Comments why bother writing a review if you don’t have anything substantial to say
In over 200 reviews I have done for this publication over the past 15 years
I have never before been accused of having nothing substantial to say
I think you should rethink sending nasty comments like this
Reviewers work very hard and very carefully to give you an idea about the performance
I can’t imagine why you would send such a mean note
there’s really not much substantial commentary about the pieces
I am coming to grips that people are discounting the chance that this entire world may go up in smoke in 1 year because of technologies like artificial intelligence that we tragically likely cannot control
It’s a bit like accusing a clock of a crime

I find that most reviews published today – everywhere
not just BMInt – contain information that can be written before actually attending the concert
describing the music or the composer or the hall or what the performer was wearing is quite a bit easier
when an observant reviewer actually critiqued the performance or music played
constructive criticism is the lifeblood of teaching
I see no relevance to not having been accused of not having anything substantial to say
Perhaps this constructive criticism will make the next review one of more consequence
Life is touch and must try to be kind to one another
I wish you great good luck in the future and wish you well
The average classical music enthusiast is not well enough educated to know of the “Terezin” composers
I would guess less than 3% have heard of it

WePresent is the arts platform of WeTransfer. The simplest way to send big files
A platform to empower creatives while using business as a force for good
as he moved between his hometown and his new home
he noticed parallels between the two cultures—a connection shaped by shared histories and the rituals of daily life
“Almost everyone I remember growing up around were boys,” says the Taiwanese photographer
he noticed the boys were becoming more conscious of how they expressed affection
“There was a fear of being teased or perceived in a certain way,” he says
“It seemed like girls never really had to worry about that."
these early experiences would become a starting point for a photography project about masculinity in the domestic space
titled “Sonder.” It all began in Lin’s own home in Taichung
The Central Saint Martins graduate moved to London seven years ago
but has since traveled home for a few weeks each year
observing masculine intimacy within his family
The artist began to wonder what masculinity looked like in London homes
the home is traditionally seen as a feminine space
It’s easy to imagine what care and nurture look like through the female experience
What does masculine attachment look like within these walls
I wanted to start a project that connected Taichung and London—both of which are very close to my heart.”
Lin connected with 10 families across the two cities
He spent time getting to know each of them
“Sometimes I’d take a documentary approach
and other times we’d discuss and recreate scenes—like a father taking his child to school on a bike,” he says
Although London and Taichung are approximately 9,000 kilometers apart and vastly different in culture
“I actually expected the photos to look very different,” he says
I saw parallels I hadn’t anticipated.” Some parallels are visual—household objects
Emotional distance and tensions exist in every family
A connection shaped by shared histories and the rituals of daily life
The resulting images are hushed and atmospheric: interiors drenched in soft light; fleeting gestures captured off-guard
rather than imposing—a mix of staged and candid scenes left open for interpretation
and it’s within these layers that a common drive is most deeply felt
we all yearn for connection,” Lin reflects
“Society doesn’t provide many safe spaces for men to express their affection openly
so they express it more subtly… Which is why I wanted to portray these interactions in a nuanced way that transcends cultural boundaries.”
The project’s title “Sonder” is a term describing the profound realization that every person
Lin first encountered the word through a Facebook post: an image of a traffic jam
each car labelled with a different story: “This person just got married,” “This person just lost their grandma,” “This person just had their first kiss,” and so on
“I resonated with that because this project is me getting a glimpse into each household,” he explains
this project was never about documenting the everyday lives of families
“It was about representing something beyond that
to invite conversations about intimacy and masculinity,” says Lin
It’s also about expanding the definition of masculinity into one that allows for tenderness as much as strength; vulnerability as much as resilience
“To redefine masculinity is to break down its traditional associations with qualities like strength
feel or be—whether tender or assertive—is inherently masculine as long as they identify as men,” he says
“I hope people take away the idea that by showcasing a spectrum of intimacy and tension
this project challenges rigid ideas about what it means to be masculine.”

Ulises also serves as a scholarly platform that is stimulating and interconnected. Recently, Ken Lum, an acclaimed Philadelphia-based artist and educator, hosted a table reading of his feature-length script on Chinese workers in collaboration with local performers as part of his exhibition at Ulises’ project space
The reading was accompanied by a discussion with Peter X Feng
English Professor at the University of Delaware
as a community of critical praxis fostering the dynamics of collective thinking
They were a venue sponsor for one of the Eco-Social Salons
a discussion series on the climate crisis and arts
I was so excited when I first heard Ulises was presenting the Los Angeles artist Candice Lin’s exhibition but also surprised
Ulises is a community-minded space that is writing a new chapter on what it means to be independent as a practice and as activism
whereas the kinds of places Candice Lin’s work has been shown – in the past five years at least – are mostly large-scale visual arts establishments attracting mainstream audiences and recognition
Her most recent show commissioned by the Biennale of Sydney and Monash University Museum of Art is currently up until January 12
Her first solo show in New York was at Canal Projects[2] in 2023
presenting a gigantic installation of a lithium battery factory co-produced by Gwangju Biennale
Her work shown at the 2022 Venice Biennale[3] built off her installation at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts[4] and the Walker Art Center[5]
has been garnering significant international attention for her practice exploring power relations in the history of oppressions using non-human configurations and objects in fictional situations
Central to her work is disrupting and reframing preconceived notions to allow fluidity blurring the boundaries and opening up in people’s understanding
Lin’s experimentation with organic materials that are mutated and deteriorated through natural processes reflects her interest in malleability of interactions
When I visited Ulises for Ken Lum’s table reading
Lauren Downing from Ulises briefly told me Lin’s exhibition was going to be about cats
Cats have been a recurring motif in Lin’s work
Cat demons as feline narrator appeared in different forms — videos and sculptures — in her show at the Carpenter Center
I was excited to find out more of the behind-the-scenes stories
This interview was conducted in the early morning of December 13
one day before the opening of her show at Ulises
Joyce Chung: What prompted you to want to have a show at Ulises
Candice Lin: We did a Zoom and I was so charmed by them as people
I remember we talked about their history and what they do
you feel like you are old friends so I was excited to do something with them
Joyce: This is your first time having a show in Philadelphia
There’s a strong sense of community in the Philly art scene
When we needed a pedestal of a certain size during installation yesterday
‘Let me go down the street and ask these people.’ That’s great in so many ways
It’s nice to see this kind of community in Philly and it’s much less wasteful too
and from about 2007-2012 I ran an artist-run space with a group of other artists
That was a time period when a lot of people were doing things like that
We all met through working for the artists Sam Durant and Andrea Bowers
they were renting the studio for a good price and they signed the lease over to us
So we were able to have this studio that had extra space
Instead of using it for an additional studio to lower our rent
we wanted to try to run a space to show other people’s work and do events
But that kind of thing is less and less possible with rising costs in LA
Sometimes I see my students trying to do things like this still
runs a gallery out of a modified van called Motor
just like we did when we ran Monte Vista and now and then when they have the capacity they drive the van to a location and set up a show or event
You’re putting your extra time to make shows and events around things you believe in and it’s outside the market economy
your participation in Ulises’s program is so inspiring
It gives local communities and DIY spaces the courage to broaden the spectrum of a project they can do and collaborate with artists that they wouldn’t have thought of
It also resonates with the premise of Ulises’s “Commodities” series that your show is part of
The two previous artists from the series are Kameelah Janan Rasheed and Ken Lum
Each project develops the artist’s works in multiple copies or editions providing more accessible options for art lovers
What multiples did you produce for your show at Ulises
Candice: We’ve made an interspecies fish-based soda that cats as well as humans might drink and like
I’m so embarrassed that I’m making cat art but I can’t seem to stop
I was making research-based work about specific materials like porcelain
and sugar and how these materials are tied to violence
reading about all these heavy histories of indentured asian labor and slavery was too much for my heart to hold
on top of what was happening in the world with COVID and all the death and loss and the waves of anti-Asian violence… so the work ended up being populated with all these cats
Joyce: What’s your desire to make work about cats
Candice: I think the cats came into the work as a unplanned and intuitive need for humor
sweetness –amidst all the contemporary crises and awfulness
and amidst the heaviness of history and the violence of the present crises which are so clearly linked to the way those histories continue in new forms
Joyce: There’s an idea of purity in animals
Candice: That’s why we find them so comforting
But it’s funny because now that I’ve really started to embrace that my new work is also about animals and our relationships to them
I’m looking critically at some of the impulses that made me turn towards them
We want animals to be this place of escape and unpremeditated naturalness or directness that we’ve somehow lost
It’s worth thinking about why it’s so important that we have this projected space of purity and innocence for animals that are our pets
preserving the false illusion of our own innocence
Anna Tsing has this really great clear way she writes (in “Unruly Edges”) about how pets help us hold love and innocence within the imperial family
The necropolitics these days are so clear in our global politics
and it’s permeating all the way through even to academia
It’s not even possible to speak out against innocent people being killed in the genocide in Gaza
without being told you are an anti-Semitic terrorist and should be fired
I got back on social media recently mainly to stay in the loop around protests and things that are happening
But because I don’t really use social media
my feed is this juxtaposition of cat memes and horrifying images of children and families who have been killed in Gaza
I lose my mind every time I try to look something up on there
This kind of cognitive dissonance is an insane reality to be in right now
So I’m embarrassed on the one hand about making cat art at all at a time like this
but it’s just one more part of this dissonance of realities
But it’s also a way of trying to process and survive without becoming deadened in the heart
to offer moments of reprieve amidst all the heaviness
and in that moment of openness of heart look and question ideologies of innocence and power
Joyce: What kind of relationship do you have with your cat
What kind of agency do you confer on your cat
One aspect of the work is about troubling this assumption that we are caretakers of the animals or that there is an uncomplicated notion of care happening
Care is also this word like innocence that has a lot of unpacked dynamics of power within it: who gets to be in a position of caretaking and all the adjacent questions around autonomy and agency that raises
Agency is a very liberal humanist construct
He goes inside and outside freely so he could leave me if he wanted to
but he has dependencies that I’ve built into his life since I lured him inside as a feral kitten that makes him want to stay
But he has other forms of power over me because I am in love with him and he mind controls me and I do his bidding in some ways
I don’t have power over him completely but I have used my power to make him dependent on me
Joyce: Camaraderie is developed through conflicts and hopes
I wonder if there is some kind of autonomy taken away from Roger
Candice: I neutered him which I grueled over but ultimately chose to do
It’s a huge thing to take away someone’s sexual and reproductive ability and alter how it affects their mood and hormones
But because I’ve already brought Roger into this relationship of dependency
I didn’t feel right letting him be out there making feral kittens that I couldn’t care for
But I think the question of autonomy is also a lot more complicated than the ways I’ve taken it away or restricted it in his individual life
Ethics of care that uphold companionship also challenge the promise of cohabitation
I heard in the exhibition there will be a seltzer mixed with fish sauce for visitors to buy and drink
I have all these great ideas for things I think could be the next big trend
In California especially there’s such a wellness culture that I find fascinating
There was a broth trend for awhile and all these different kinds of energy health drinks
a canned drink that is something good for you but also something you can drink with your cat because I love when Roger eats or drinks things from the same bowl as me
So it came about as a kind of joke but we pursued it seriously.
Candice: In 2012 or 2013 when I started making work with a lot of liquid and organic materials
I was thinking about entanglement and the way that our bodies are porous and changing and changed by the world
And I was thinking through that subject matter by looking at the histories of bacteria
I was making work about parasites and fungi and I found out that for two years I had actually had a parasite living in my intestine but I didn’t realize it
It was controlling my mind’s interests from within
in my collaborative work with P.Staff on Hormonal Fog[6] we made this testosterone-inhibiting fog as a provocation and a reminder for people that you’re always ingesting things and being changed as you’re moving through the world and at the same time you are changing it and having an effect on it
The idea of entanglement and porosity is always important to me in the work as a way to rethink the enlightenment subject of rationality and distance
A lot of the work I make is very material and sensorial for that reason
to remind people that they are always part of the artwork and part of the world as they taste
Candice Lin: Interspecies Imbibements is Candice Lin’s first solo exhibition in Philadelphia
Lin transforms Ulises’ project gallery into a shared domestic space between humans and their animal companions
Mutual living arrangements include three cat-shaped pillows made in glazed ceramic that are placed on a hand-tufted wool rug in the center
Five human collars are suspended from the ceiling by metal chains
each with a hanging locket inscribed with semi-caring
semi-sinister interactions between humans and non-human animals
Though the setup seems to be more relatable than Lin’s previous lithium battery factory piece in which the cat-demons reside
the constructed view constantly provokes tensions that seeks a considerable level of compromise in cohabiting with domestic cats
“a canned beverage produced specifically for Ulises
It’s a seltzer mixed with fish sauce that viewers can purchase at $2.50 and drink together with their cats or other animals
visitors are invited to engage with the fizzy materials as the particles are getting through their bodies
probably something they have never thought about before
Nor are they the representation of tension and anxiety in the world as Sigmund Freud suggests in his cat dream theory
Candice Lin’s work intends to disrupt the conventional perceptions about animals
reframing them as companion species that we live with together
The hanging human collars are great reminders of the reconfigured relationship between humans and their animals
As our intake of “Both Soda” is more than we expect
human relationships with non-human species are more interconnected than we can imagine both directly and indirectly
Some of the unintended impacts that human actions have on other species could be altering ecosystems or consuming resources
no relationship is free from conflicts or unpremeditated harm
humans often misconstrue what other humans want
where the communication is carried through the mode of language
Lin’s voice trembled slightly when she was talking about castration
Roger has within him the instinct for reproduction
but also loves the feeling of freedom that he can now pursue without weighing it down for people he is in a relationship with
but one thing we can easily build consensus on is that considering animals as simple sources of unconditional love is abusive
but about seeking to inhabit an inter-subjective world that is about meeting the other in all the fleshly detail of a mortal relationship[7].”
The exhibition provides a platform for continuous reflection on the foundations of human morality
and kindness that are essential for living together
especially in the face of collective crises
Not only does the artist’s work pose questions on the ways in which interspecies cohabitation is governed by reciprocity and respect
her attempt to channel other-than-human voices and forces effectively reveals the irony of violence
Violence often emerges during efforts to resolve a conflict turning the conflict resolution effort into a more entrenched struggle
there are no definitive or final answers for how to solve this; it is an ongoing dialogue as we continue to navigate the world
Candice Lin made a bunch of indigo-dye T-shirts fundraising for a family in Gaza
I bought a yellow T-shirt with a cat castration graphic with the phrase “too many rats not enough sex.”

Eddie Lin is running for Seattle City Council in District 2 and emphasizing the issue of housing affordability and the need to increase the pace of homebuilding
Lin laid out his plans and how he will pitch them to D2 voters
For example, denser housing doesn’t just increase housing opportunities, it also makes room for trees and green space as the city grows
“We have a robust economy; we’re going to continue to grow,” Lin told The Urbanist
“We’re going to have political refugees
We’re going to have climate refugees coming here
and density is how we get the combination of trees plus housing plus livable neighborhoods
We can’t have a suburban lifestyle continue as we grow as a city
It’s hard for any city to grow as very rapidly as we have
Solomon has pledged to be a caretaker lawmaker and not run for election
The winner will serve for two years before facing reelection with the rest of Seattle’s district-based councilmembers in 2027
part of the inspiration to run was pushing Seattle to avoid the fate of the San Francisco Bay Area
where housing and affordability issues spiraled out of control
He experienced first-hand the high housing costs and displacement pressure long brewing in the Bay
“We had our first kid down in Oakland
and were trying to buy a house,” Lin said
“This was like 2000 — very good for teachers salary and a secondary salary
and the housing boom down there… kind of saw that for the future of Seattle down in the Bay Area — the growing income wealth disparity and basically
kind of found ourselves economically pushed out from the Bay Area and came back to Seattle for law school.”
The Seattle Comprehensive Plan presents an opportunity to increase housing options and diversity
saying Seattle needs to distribute growth equitably throughout the city
Wealthier parts of the city have not been asked to absorb as much housing as D2
“I think we need to go bigger and for D2 in particular
“I would really like to see those upzones in other parts of the city
One of the best anti-displacement things is for other parts of the city to have their fair share and prosperity of growth.”
Count Lin among the advocates for cities being cities
“We can’t have huge parts of the city just continue to be more suburban in nature,” Lin said
“That’s just going to push folks down to South Seattle
and that’s just going to exacerbate the economic displacement of South Seattle.”
Permit applications have nosedived in Seattle, which points toward a slowdown in housing production. Even as construction continues to hum along for now, the housing pipeline is looking increasingly dry looking forward
And Lin pointed out this problem could have far-reaching consequences
“We need to get housing development started again
that will help with tax revenues,” Lin said
“Whenever there’s housing development
Often there’s [real estate] excise tax
So I think that that’s critical is to keep housing production going.”
Lin worked in real estate law in private practice before eventually got a job at the Seattle City Attorney’s office
he’s supported the City’s Office of Housing work
Lin expressed support for the Mandatory Housing Affordability (MHA) program
Seattle’s version of inclusionary zoning
and lamented that it hadn’t been put into place before most of the Amazon building boom took place
Overall, Lin portrayed himself as a champion for taxing the rich and easing the tax burden on the working class, saying he would defend JumpStart revenue from being pilfered or cut. The revenue source has turned into a bit of a piggybank for mayoral priorities in recent budget cycles
“We can’t shore [our budget] up by taxing our lowest income
“We need to lean in things like capital gains tax and protecting our Jumpstart tax
because there probably will be financial impacts from the feds
Having seen how challenging it is in the affordable housing sector also gave Lin pause when it came to Seattle’s recently approved social housing measure
no other sort of affordable housing developer gets 50 million year after year,” Lin said
But I did have concerns about this sort of ramping up too quick
I just don’t want there to be some sort of stumbling where then that sort of has some sort of backlash on affordable housing generally
or progressive revenues generally… because again
I know how hard it is to develop these and they are a new city model
Lin seemed aware his Prop 1B support might be greeted with some chagrin by social housing advocates who fought hard to pass their measure
Lin stressed he would support their work and respect the will of voters in a follow-up email after our interview
“I couldn’t be more passionate about ensuring the Social Housing Developer and the House our Neighbors team are successful and the clear message delivered by voters,” Lin said
“And I’m looking forward to the opportunity to bring my experience and skills to support their work through strong support and collaboration at council.”
our streets are not going to get any bigger,” Lin said
“So we got to look at these alternative methods
this also gets back to the planning and why we need these walkable in more dense neighborhoods
So it’s going to be a tough transition long-term to go from our car-oriented culture
but we still have just so much to go.”
Lin seemed hesitant to get behind pedestrianizing Lake Washington Boulevard, but overall backed efforts to pedestrianize more areas of the city, with Pike Place recently earning the mayor’s vow of support
“I would just love to see more parts of the city pedestrianized,” Lin said
“I really think it can reinvigorate the area
but I would love to see like that this is part of that sort of long-term planning
are there ways that we can really create these pedestrian experiences?”
Backing a balanced approach to public safety
Lin said safety interventions are necessary to reduce crime and substance use disorder
“I do think we have an obligation to intervene,” Lin said
what does that intervention look that intervention look like
And I think intervention does not look like just throwing people in a cold jail cell with no medical support
that’s brutal and unusual punishment
but it’s also not leaving them on the street where they’re they’re also at severe risk of dying from overdoses
Lin wants to expand use of drug diversion courts and reduce use of the SCORE jail in Des Moines
which has garnered criticism for the high number of inmate deaths
While pushing for more diversion and civilian crisis response
he wasn’t shy about saying police recruitment was part of his vision
“I do believe we need more police,” Lin said
“We’re very short-staffed on police compared to other cities our size
And so when people call 911 because of a public safety issue
to be able to respond to things that don’t need a police officer with a gun.”
Among his proposed upstream solutions is a renewed push to expand tiny home villages and homeless shelters
it’s probably our homeless that are suffering the most,” Lin said
you get back to housing supply on that part
Would really love to work more with our faith communities.”
“What you can accomplish in two years is also just changing the dialogue,” Lin said
It’s gonna be working with community and laying the groundwork
but it would be about getting the community tapped in
I think that as a lawyer and understanding how government works
I really want to bring that information and knowledge to the community
a strong bench of folks who are ready to have this information and lead.”

Yi-Hsuan Lin was drawn to the public health field during college
where promoting health literacy among children in remote areas showed her the power of public health initiatives.
What sparked your interest in public health? My interest in public health was initially sparked by my broad interest in the medical field and deepened by my volunteering experience in college: Promoting health literacy among children in remote areas and contributing to local health promotion regulations reform showed me the power of public health initiatives
This experience made me appreciate the critical role of public health in improving people’s well-being and inspired me to pursue it as a career
Why did you choose Bloomberg School of Public Health?I chose the Bloomberg School because of its strong emphasis on protecting health and saving lives
which resonates deeply with my values and aspirations
my program offers comprehensive courses on health policies
and various other subjects that I believe are crucial for my professional development
The thesis and field placement opportunities in our program provide hands-on experience and enhance my research capabilities
which are essential for equipping me to achieve my goal of improving maternal and fetal health
What led you to join the Department of Population
Family and Reproductive Health?Besides my interest in this field
my experience working in a maternal and child health laboratory during college
where I worked closely with pregnant women in hospitals
Witnessing the mental and physical impacts of preeclampsia on pregnant women ignited my passion for studying how diseases and risk factors affect women's mental and physical health
and for finding ways to prevent illness in its early stages.
I particularly appreciate the relatively smaller class sizes
which create an environment where students can form strong connections with both professors and classmates.
What is one experience in PFRH that stands out as a favorite or most memorable? Our department's professors are incredibly skilled and are leading experts in their fields
which create an environment where students can form strong connections with both professors and classmates
This fosters a special atmosphere for learning and bonding
our department organizes outings like attending baseball games
watching a game and having a pre-game gathering with classmates and faculty is absolutely an amazing experience
Tell us about your field placement. My field placement is with The Women's Fund Miami-Dade
My responsibilities include enhancing the accessibility and functionality of the service organization database
and conducting targeted research on policies affecting women's well-being
I deeply believe that our efforts are making significant differences in promoting economic mobility
What do you hope to do or accomplish after graduation?I am greatly impressed by the public health environment in the United States
where many small issues like period poverty are addressed by dedicated individuals and organizations
Although maternal and child health may not appear to be the most urgent public health crisis
many voices from underserved areas need help but are not heard
I hope to continue contributing to this field
striving to improve people's physical and mental health and giving back to society: “Protecting Health

Stanford University School of Medicine blog
In his nearly two decades as a clinical professor at Stanford Medicine, Bryant Lin had never stood before a classroom of students as a patient -- let alone as a patient who
despite never inhaling "a single puff of smoke of any kind," has been afflicted with an incurable form of late-stage lung cancer
it was little surprise when the focus of lesson No
1 in his new fall class swerved toward Lin's tear ducts rather than his lungs
reaching toward the nearby podium of a unique class he named MED 275: From Diagnosis to Dialogue: A Doctor's Real-Time Battle with Cancer
that he received the diagnosis of stage IV non-small cell cancer -- aka never-smoker lung cancer
To encapsulate for the students what drove him toward medicine
Lin began to read aloud a handwritten letter he received from an elderly patient with chronic kidney disease many years ago
Lin: I wanted to thank you for taking such good care of me in my old age
You treated me as you would treat your own father
with humor and care and great professional skills."
That letter arrived two weeks after the man's death ..
which means that he spent time in his final hours writing a letter for me
"That letter arrived two weeks after the man's death ...," Lin said
his strong baritone voice now soft and crackly
"Which means that he spent time in his final hours writing a letter for me."
the doctor-turned-patient stood before a small classroom at Li Ka-shing Hall that was overstuffed with people
Many among them were trying to control the commotion stirring in their own tear ducts
this class is part of my letter -- what I'm doing to give back to my community as I go through this."
is now discovering what it's like to be on the opposite end of that arrangement
He admits that it can be difficult: "Doctors are notoriously bad patients," he said
He is a sharer and storyteller by nature, which explains why the man who directs Stanford Medicine's Medical Humanities and the Arts program decided quickly after he was diagnosed to turn his own experience into a real-time living laboratory to be observed; processed; and
and the greater Stanford School of Medicine community
can take something valuable from his fight against the deadliest form of cancer
the remainder of his life will have served a meaningful purpose
"It's an honor you would want to sign up for my class," he told the mix of Stanford School of Medicine medical students and Stanford University undergrads
"My dream is that you will go into cancer care
It would be great if even just one of you dedicated some part of your career to cancer."
It's an honor you would want to sign up for my class
My dream is that you will go into cancer care
It would be great if even just one of you dedicated some part of your career to cancer
Particularly, Lin noted, researching elusive cures and pushing for more widespread screening. As one of the world's experts on diseases that disproportionately affect people of Asian descent -- the Taiwanese-American Lin co-founded Stanford Medicine's Center for Asian Health Research and Education in 2018 -- he knows the stark data points
Though prostate (in men) and breast (in women) are the most prevalent forms of cancer
more people die from lung cancer than any other form
Some 200 million worldwide receive a lung cancer diagnosis each year
While smokers make up the majority of those cases
15-20% of people with lung cancer are like Lin and never took a puff
their plight is the result of a gene mutation that disproportionately affects those of Asian descent
So why is the survival rate for lung cancer so stark? There was a lesson for that on day one of MED 275. And Lin selected his colleague Natalie Lui
a thoracic surgeon who runs the lung cancer screening program at Stanford Medicine
lung cancer is largely a silent disease that goes undetected for a dangerously long period
"It doesn't cause symptoms until it's quite advanced," Lui explained
"And if someone goes to their primary care doctor and says
'I have a cough,' it could be a million different things other than lung cancer
it's really hard to diagnose people early -- and the prognosis plummets with the later stages it's detected."
Lin's primary care doctor, Paul Ford
illustrated how that scenario played out in Lin's lungs
showing the class slides of the imaging that led to the diagnosis: X-ray
The MRI revealed cancer that had metastasized in his liver and bones
Most striking were the number of lesions on his brain
a medical student and one of three volunteer teaching assistants
refers to MED 275 as a "once-in-a-lifetime class." He said Lin helped mentor him as a budding medical entrepreneur
generously sharing his time and wisdom on how he balances what would seem to be impossible: teaching students
maintaining a clinical practice and launching successful companies
"To watch someone you really admire see their fate change so quickly is a very helpless feeling," Liu said
Lin told him about the class and asked him to be a TA
that the class quickly filled and drew an immediate waiting list
and that they had an overflow crowd problem for the very first gathering
"Here's a guy diagnosed with cancer and what does he immediately think of?" Liu said
"'How can I help others by sharing this journey?'"
Sasha Ronaghi is close to completing her Stanford undergraduate degree in computer science
but she won't pass up an interesting class when she sees one
Though she has no plans to go into medicine
she has become a regular in front of the room after classes
"We all know someone who has experienced cancer
but we wish we could understand that experience better," she said
Lin said that his life hasn't changed since his diagnosis
Even now knowing that he has a limited time on earth
and it helps guide me as I get close to graduating and figuring out my next steps in life."
For first-year med student Melissa Maldonado Ogle
with an interest in both the equity of global oncology treatment and the humanistic side of medicine
Lin's class could not have been more on target
Getting into the course was like finding a golden ticket
"I feel so fortunate to have gotten in," she said
"For someone to have the bravery and vulnerability to do a class like this
I just thought it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
"We focus a lot on therapeutics and science
and sometimes we forget that there's a human being on the other side of it," Maldonado Ogle added
then look at it from an epidemiological level
really helps contextualize the conversations we're having."
Though Lin's journey is only five months old
the syllabus he mapped out for the 10-week course runs the full cancer gamut: the mental health impact; the role of caregivers; how spirituality
ethics and nutrition factor in; the access and availability of treatment; what the epidemiology says about cultural considerations such as genetic predisposition
Speakers will include his wife, Christine Chan; his oncologist, Heather Wakelee
MD; and a spiritual panel that includes representatives from four different faiths: Buddhism
will explore cutting-edge advancements in cancer treatment
antibody-drug conjugates and next-generation drug inhibitors
The latest generation of drug inhibitors -- combined with chemotherapy -- have Lin feeling pretty well
angry cough that started this whole journey back in May when students and colleagues around him assumed he had pneumonia or bronchitis
Lin was able to get through his first class with hardly a cough
gladly talking to the many students who came up to greet and thank him afterward
He offered a few first-class reflections: He felt comfortable talking about his own symptoms as if they belonged to a patient; he was unexpectedly emotional while introducing the class; and
while the letter from the terminally ill patient always stirs his heart
it was particularly resonant in the context of how this new class fits into his journey
how many patients with an incurable disease -- who
as Lin said "now have to think in terms of years rather than decades" -- get the chance to read their own letter of appreciation out loud
And before a packed house of mutually appreciative guests
"This is more emotional than I expected," Lin said
"I am truly grateful and overwhelmed that so many students were interested in taking my class."

Also a chance to vote for the #12 prospect
I have a feeling some people do not vote for the person who they actually want at that spot because they know they aren’t going to win this specific vote
I think it truly feels like anyone can win the vote
so there is no such thing as a wasted vote
The winner of the vote had what is surely the lowest percentage of total votes that any winner has gotten this year and maybe even throughout the entire time I’ve been doing this
a winner must be crowned and a winner was crowned

and perform well in the 8 games he played at High A
He’ll be 21 and playing most of next season at High A
Back when I ran a comparable player poll of Gordon Graceffo
Graceffo dominated the votes and Racjic and Bedell were almost dead even
because it meant I needed to add Rajcic and Bedell at about the same time
so I feel safe in excluding Bedell for another week
Although I actually was not going to add Bedell this week even if Graceffo won (because Rajcic looks nowhere close to winning yet)
And the reason I had to change the plan that was already changed was because several people in the comments want Yairo Padilla
I ran Raniel Rodriguez against Yairo Padilla head to head
my logic was if Rodriguez isn’t getting votes
Rodriguez still hasn’t really gotten votes
but there’s a chance the 40% of the votes Padilla got are greater believers in Padilla (and DSL prospects in general) than the Rodriguez voters
a solid corner outfield defender thanks to above-average speed and adequate reads
Do you expect 2024 to essentially be like a lost year
as he has a 2025 that we expected from him last year
Or do you think he’ll make up for lost ground and explode out of the gate
Probably not the latter if you guys aren’t voting for him now
BP: “He averaged 92.8 in Triple-A and 93.5 in a brief spell in the majors this season
and at that velocity his fastball shape really isn’t enough to miss bats and his changeup doesn’t play as well as a swing-and-miss pitch.”
Do you expect him to spend the majority of 2025 in the MLB
And is that coming in the bullpen or rotation
Do the Cardinals use him as part of the bullpen shuttle
I actually genuinely have no clue what the Cardinals plan for Graceffo is this season
Making the team out of spring training in the rotation is about the only thing that would really surprise me
and that relies on a lot of couple things going wrong more than Graceffo himself
BP: Honeyman has a punchy little line-drive oriented swing
a tight barrel loop that generates explosive impact out in front of the plate
sending most of his contact to the pull side
The one thing holding back Honeyman is obviously the injuries
but a part of me wonders if a fully healthy Honeyman ends up just jumping through the minors
let’s just speed-run through this thing to get you where you should be
they arguably did it with Matt Koperniak (both influenced by no minor league season in 2020)
and they recently did it with Quinn Mathews (more related to him already being 23; well that and his dominance)
I don’t think BP has written a single word about him
He would absolutely make the team out of spring training
especially if he showed a proclivity to hitting left-handed hitters (like Luken Baker)
Him being left-handed is his greatest road-block
most successful MLB careers do not start at 27
BP: “Padilla is an eye scouting marvel: a tall
classically projectable 17-year-old who takes a smooth swing from both sides of the plate
If you believe in the old ways of scouting even a little bit
The case for Padilla is reflected in the sentence above
in one of two paragraphs they wrote about Padilla
they wrote a second paragraph and that would be the argument against him
Which is to say: he doesn’t hit the ball hard and his exit velocity numbers are low compared to top DSL players his age
BP: “He has a very pretty looking but humpy curveball
though his changeup has actually taken a step forward to claim the title of his best offspeed offering (to go along with various flavors of slider).”
Rajcic is still young and hasn’t seen AAA yet
but he does need to be added to the 40 man roster at the end of 2025
so I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him a little bit this upcoming season
Kind of depends on where the Cardinals are
if the Cardinals get hit with an injury bug or trade/release current rotation members
But he might make his MLB debut this season
BP: Robberse at least has some whiffier offerings in his sweeper and hard changeup—which is only four mph off his fastball—and his cutterish slider has utility too
so of this group he might have the most relief conversion potential
Robberse has way less of a hurdle to join the MLB club at some point: he’s already on the 40 man and burned his first of three options
The only reason we didn’t see him at the end of last season was because he was hurt
He missed nearly two months beginning in the middle of June
they functioned more as rehab outings than real starts
BP: “He hits the ball pretty hard for his age
Whereas I would argue Padilla is something of a scouting pick
Rodriguez is probably more of a “holy shit his stats are good” pick
the road to the majors involves checks notes five more minor league levels before he reaches the majors
BP: “Saladin is another low-VAA fastball oddity king; you can really see the Cardinals trending hard in this direction over the past few years
After three years mostly bopping around the complex
he showed up in A-ball this year and torched both levels working primarily off a low-to-mid-90s heater from a flat angle.”
I guess the theme of this vote is me wondering what the Cardinals’ rough outline of a plan is regarding their prospects
Saladin already made 12 starts at High A and they were arguably comparable to his starts in Low A (not from a run prevention standpoint
LYR: #21 (He was close to winning 20th vote)
sub-4 VAA fastball out of an extremely funky delivery was absurdly dominant against Low-A hitters
and he also weaponized a sweeper against same-side batters for a very tough look.”
I am curious about what the plan is for Showalter’s innings
Hence actually started at 60 innings with the AFL included
You got to think they want about 70 innings in 2025
I feel compelled to bless you guys with this music mashup
Having divorced her husband when Tonia was 3 yrs.old
Her mother remarried and Tonia and her brother Michael continued to live with their mother and her husband Ralph Sparano
Tonia met her first husband René Huiban while working at Neri’s bakery in Port Chester
Tonia and René moved with her parents to Stamford
She lived there for 18 years and in that time there isn’t much she didn’t do
and her son that we knew everyone in Stamford
and with how many people Tonia knew and cared for
Tonia and Rene divorced in 2009 and Tonia met her second husband
Tonia immediately began to build community and get involved

A materials engineer and entrepreneur who has pioneered breakthrough thin film technologies and created opportunities to support people worldwide through education and counseling
Flossie Lin has been a cutting-edge materials science researcher for companies including IBM and HMT Technology
She’s also excelled as a real estate developer and philanthropist
earned an MS and PhD in materials science and engineering studying the formation
structural defects and the effects of temperature and process on intermetallic compounds
Her training led to a position at IBM in 1979
where she worked in thin-film disk process development
she helped develop the layer-by-layer deposition process for building the disks
which are used in hard-drive memory devices
Lin brought her talents to the startup company HMT Technology as the head of thin-film disk development and manufacturing process
“My background from Wisconsin helped me a lot to understand the parameters
the properties and analysis of these materials,” she says
“We needed to have very specialized equipment and I used the basic knowledge I learned from Wisconsin to help develop the manufacturing process.”
After many successful years in that position
Lin and her husband I-Fong decided to change gears
“I realized the real estate market was very hot in the Bay Area,” she says
“So instead of continuing with high-tech development
we created a company for real estate investment.”
Apex Property Group and its subsidiaries have invested in
developed and managed many properties in California
with Lin still serving as president of the endeavor
The Lins also founded and manage the Fongsong Life Foundation
a nonprofit that provides grants to educational organizations
Fongsong means something like ‘helping people have a better life,’” says Lin
“I really believe education can help people grow
and in many rural areas they don’t have good education
So we provide scholarships and teaching activities
and give them a better chance to go to school.”
She has traveled extensively in China and Africa
visiting schools to understand the best ways to improve rural education
She and her husband also enjoy exploring the world and spend part of the year in Hawaii and Alaska
I would say my engineering education is responsible for 90% of my success
I learned a lot about troubleshooting solutions and techniques for getting more knowledge
Investing is not directly related to my education
but the engineering way of thinking helped me a lot
If you don’t have the basic skills to develop strategy
So I really appreciate the UW-Madison educational experience
my direction was working in the high-tech area
and in real estate development I have enjoyed understanding more about the economy of the world
finding new opportunities and organizing projects
At IBM we did highly confidential research
But I earned some internal awards from them and from HMT
and in summer we did a lot of fishing and canoeing … so I like both
We still have a canoe which we bought in Wisconsin that is in our front yard
we may take a day just to canoe on the Wisconsin River

Serena Lin ’25 is passionate about bridging the gap between people
So much so that she created a toolbox called “Uplift Notes” to bring people together in conversation
But what sets her product apart from the many other conversation starter games on the market
“It’s evidence based,” says Lin. “It’s developed by a neuroscience major and is built to have some cognitive benefits
And it has been tested by several hundred people to make sure they actually want to answer the questions.”
Lin tested her questions with people of all ages and especially wanted her prompts to appeal to older people
The generation gap is one she is most eager to bridge
A human-centered design course at The Hive provided the support to create Uplift Notes
“Many of them really miss being with their grandchildren or other family members and having to be very isolated,” said Lin in a Los Angeles Times story featuring her work with elders
“and they’re having to cope with that loneliness and with the days blurring into each other.”
Lin has homed in her neuroscience studies on Alzheimer’s disease
Watching her great-grandfather struggle with and ultimately succumb to the illness as well as her great-aunt currently experiencing it have been hard
But the knowledge she has gained through her classes has empowered her
“is not just about what you eat or what kind of medications you have; your social engagement is also really important.”
During her sophomore year, Lin enrolled in a human-centered design course at The Hive
provided the support to create Uplift Notes to help facilitate this kind of critical social interaction
To develop the product, Lin consulted with several faculty and alumni experts, including Professor of Neuroscience Karen Parfitt
author of A Tattoo on my Brain: A Neurologists’ Personal Battle against Alzheimer’s Disease
The toolkit went through multiple iterations before it was released earlier this year
Since then, Uplift Notes has been used at a campus faculty-staff mixer, Pomona College’s Alumni Weekend and Bridging the Gap
a program Lin participated in that addresses religious and political polarization
Lin is working on a version of the toolbox specifically for individuals with neurological challenges such as with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease
The 2.0 edition will be the outcropping of her senior thesis
“Social Engagement for Alzheimer’s Patients and Their Caregivers.” Her thesis research will test how the toolbox improves participants’ mood
“I’m hoping that it can be used as a supplement for someone if they’re caregiving
in conjunction with other Alzheimer’s treatments,” says Lin
Lin’s ultimate desire is to get the toolbox into the hands of as many Alzheimer’s support groups
But she also hopes that people of all ages
backgrounds and levels of extroversion will make use of Uplift Notes
As she touts on the product’s website and passionately believes
“Increased social engagement is good for your wellbeing

Lin Jian: I noted the report. This is the first time that the Chinese government hosts the IPCC session. With the strong support and effort from China, the session adopted the outlines of the three Working Group contributions to the Seventh Assessment Report, which identified the key direction of the scientific assessment on climate change, and laid an important foundation for pooling the strength of the global science community and jointly improving climate governance.
Reuters: Global Times reported today that China is formulating countermeasures to fresh U.S. tariffs expected to enter force tomorrow, including curbs on American agricultural products. Is the Foreign Ministry able to confirm this?
Lin Jian: I made clear China’s solemn position on the relevant question last week. The U.S. once again uses the fentanyl issue as a pretext to threaten China with tariff hikes on its imports. China opposes this move and will do what is necessary to firmly safeguard its legitimate interests.
Associated Press of Pakistan: Last Friday, Pakistan and China signed a cooperation agreement on spaceflight of a Pakistani astronaut on Chinese space station. This is being considered another milestone in space cooperation between the two countries. What is your response please?
Reuters: Last week, U.S. President Trump accused Ukrainian President Zelenskyy of being not ready for a peace deal with Russia. Does China’s Foreign Ministry have any comment on the meeting?
Lin Jian: We noted relevant reports. China will continue to play a constructive role for the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis and the realization of peace.
Bloomberg: I want to follow up if China would send peacekeepers to Ukraine as some analysts have suggested?
Lin Jian: China did not start the Ukraine crisis, nor is it a party to it. We support all efforts conducive to the peaceful settlement of the crisis. China hopes that the relevant parties can find a sustainable and lasting solution that takes into account each other’s concerns.
Reuters: Is the Foreign Ministry able to confirm that the 40 Chinese nationals repatriated from Thailand last week are Chinese Uyghurs? The United Nations human rights experts said that they were at risk of harm if returned. Are you able to tell us what would happen to them next?
Lin Jian: I made clear China’s position last week. Let me stress once again that the repatriation is carried out in accordance with the laws of China and Thailand as well as international law and common practices. The lawful rights of people concerned are fully protected. Readouts were also released by competent authorities.
CCTV: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently blamed China on issues of Taiwan, economy and trade, COVID-19 and Indo-Pacific affairs in an interview by U.S. media outlet. What is China’s comment?
Lin Jian: Rubio’s remarks are steeped in the Cold-War mentality and full of lies and false accusations. China strongly deplores and firmly opposes this, and has lodged serious protests with the U.S.
Reuters: The U.S. is nudging Mexico and Canada to match tariffs on China. Does the Foreign Ministry have any comment?
Lin Jian: As we have said more than once, trade and tariff wars have no winners. Snuffing out others’ candles does not bring light to oneself. WTO rules and principles of market economy should be observed by all. If there are any concerns, they should be solved through dialogue and consultation with equality and mutual respect. Countries need to come together to address unilateralism and trade protectionism.

Lin doesn’t want to claim the whole thing happened because of her
but the trend is a good example of how her videos have become an essential link connecting the parallel worlds of Western and Chinese social media
For many people who don’t otherwise know much about China
Lin has become the country’s de facto ambassador of internet culture
it was beauty creators who suggested people should move to Red Note instead
But long before Red Note offered millions of Americans an opportunity to directly experience the Chinese internet
Lin had been providing them a rare glimpse into it
Lin’s content is like a magical portal to the other side of the world
where everyone is just like you but a little different,” says Lucy White
a 22-year-old Scottish bartender who follows Lin on Instagram
Lin has become a minor celebrity and earns a stable income from TikTok that subsidizes her day job as a Cantonese tutor
But her online presence also opens her up to controversies and hatred from both pro- and anti-China voices online
she tries to stay clear of politics and focus on more innocuous and funny trends
Lin scours the Chinese internet looking for a new celebrity feud
which she then translates into English and explains in a minute-long video
Each clip features her giving the camera the same signature deadpan look
Lin is often asked why she doesn’t laugh in her videos
and she explains it’s because she needs to film four or five times to get the best take
sometimes Lin can’t help but break into a smile
Lin’s audience loves learning about what hilarious things so-called Chinese “netizens” have been up to lately
Chinese social media is a world that Westerners don’t have access to because they don’t speak the same language or use the same platforms as people in China
a 39-year-old writer and former US diplomat who follows Lin on Instagram
but there is an ‘all men are brothers’ kind of fondness [in knowing] this ridiculous thing is going on online,” he says
“China is presented as this completely othered place where no one jokes around
barren hell space that’s all hyper propaganda … But no
Candise Lin was born in the Chinese city of Guangzhou and immigrated to the US with her family when she was in middle school
She received a doctorate degree in educational psychology and later worked as a postgraduate lecturer
and at one point tried opening an online skin care shop
sounds like “god of bad luck.” The video unexpectedly blew up
garnering 5 million views and over 10,000 comments
and I realized there’s an audience for this,” Lin says
Lin later expanded to covering Chinese celebrity gossip
and absurd internet memes—all the things that an average young
super-online person in China would be scrolling and posting about on a daily basis
it’s clear that there’s an insatiable appetite in the West for this kind of content
a 22-year-old sales representative based in Beijing
Bai reached out to send Lin ideas for which internet trends she should cover next
“Becaue she has lived out of China for a long time
sometimes she consults me whether a topic is actually popular in China so she can balance the interests of Western and Eastern audiences,” Bai says
Lin says she often leans on her experiences in academia and as a teacher to ensure her videos resonate with Western audiences
She’s always thinking about the most relatable words that young people in America use so she can make comparisons and analogies to what’s happening in China
“I’m doing thorough research to make sure everything I say is correct
so my adviser wouldn’t be disappointed in me,” Lin says
discussions about China can quickly become hostile
Relations between the US and China have significantly worsened over the past decade
and people in both countries sometimes have strong and heated opinions of each others’ governments
has largely managed to maintain her little oasis in a sea of polarizing narratives
That’s partially because Lin made a deliberate decision to stay as apolitical and as neutral as possible
She’s frank about the fact that she specifically focuses on innocuous topics
“I don't mind if [people] unfollow me because I don't talk about those topics
because that means my content is not for them
There are so many accounts out there talking about those things that they can follow,” Lin says
Lin knows that no one can be perfectly neutral
and her views are understandably shaped by her upbringing in China
But she tries to keep her personal perspectives out of her videos as much as possible
“Some influencers like to show China’s worst sides in a sensational way
while other influencers oversimplify complex political issues and claim China has never done anything wrong
She just stays true to the text and communicates the different perspectives,” Bai says
One of the other things that draws Bai to Lin’s content is the fact that the comments on her videos are usually civil and friendly
Lin often receives fire from both sides of the political spectrum
She says one of her critics made an account impersonating her called “Candise Lin is racist.” On Red Note
she says she’s seen Chinese users reposting her videos and complaining that she’s smearing China’s image
Burton says that Western viewers often demand that anyone who talks about China online pass a litmus test: “Do you condemn the Chinese government?”
“If you are saying that sharing daily life stories from China is somehow a statement of allegiance to the Chinese government that must be repudiated
there’s an authoritarian in the room and it’s not Lin,” he says
Lin’s videos are like a screenshot of a funny tweet that has been reshared endlessly on Tumblr or Instagram
the hilarious commentary is coming from a random Chinese person on the other side of the world
who is probably totally unaware that their quick wit is also being appreciated by millions of people who speak a different language
Despite their deep ideological and cultural differences
Lin has proven that one thing people in the US and China can agree on is humor
Lin posted a video recapping the Red Note trend and what Americans were discovering on the Chinese app
“I hope this is the final push that combines the Chinese and English netizens into one unholy snarky union.”
