When the door to the stucco-fronted building opens, a member going in or heading out, you’ll smell garlic, a waft of grilling octopus and huge slabs of prime beef. You’ll hear the tinkle of glasses and never-ending arguments in Portuguese and English. And if you’re waved inside Clube Desportivo Faialense, you’ll see right away what it was that blocked your view from the sidewalk.
Trophies. Several shelves and six decades worth.
“This club was founded in soccer,” said Francisco Correia, pulling up a chair. He’s the president of Clube Desportivo Faialense and a place of honor, at the head of a table below a wall of team photos spanning five decades, is reserved for him.
Suddenly we’re back in the summer of 1971. “There was a bunch of guys who used to kick the ball around for fun, so they decided to start a team,” said the club’s unofficial historian, 76-year-old Gabriel Duarte, who remembers those long-ago days. “That’s how it all started.”
The team’s first name was Faialense Sport Club and it was born on a bumpy field behind a school a few blocks from where we sit sipping Sagres Pilsner. The club’s first home was a former meat market, a place, as Duarte recalls, where “ the players could get together for food and a beer after the game.”
The club, in those early days, was made up only of guys from Faial – a 66 square-mile island in the Azores where a volcanic eruption in 1957 sent folks scrambling for safety. Nearly 4000 of them landed in Massachusetts, many in East Cambridge, adding to the previous surges of Portuguese immigration to the Bay State that began back when whaling ships still ruled the waves.
In 1984, the club scraped together the money to buy the building where we sit now, in the early days of 2025. In the intervening 40 or so years, the value of the property has skyrocketed. The Cambridge that existed in 1984 is a long-faded memory.
“It used to be all Portuguese here,” said the club’s vice president, Luis Correia [brother of the club’s president, Francisco] about a neighborhood where the constant thud of construction is the soundtrack of times changing. “It was Portuguese families from the Islands [Azores] out from Inman Square all the way through East Cambridge.”
CD Faialense is a piece of the past, but one with an eye on the future too. The group of young men gathered at the other end of the table is evidence of that.

“In the beginning all the guys were from Faial, from that tiny Island,” said Luis Correia, showing off the club’s first trophy, won in 1973 and tarnished with age. It’s then that his nephew, Paul Correia, who runs the 2024 first-team as player-coach, chimes in with pride: “Now we have players from ten different countries in the team – never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be a part of something like this.”
Paul, 34, grew up around the club, going to holiday parties at the big function hall next door and playing foosball down in the basement. In those years, as the immigrants who helped build the neighborhood of East Cambridge moved away to the suburbs, soccer began to take a back seat.
“The teams up north [in and around Lowell, MA] were paying players 300 dollars a game, under the table, cash,” said Duarte about the years the club spent in the so-called LASA League – the powerful LUSO-American Soccer Association that dominated New England Soccer in the 1980s and 90s. “We couldn’t compete with that.”
“We have this place here and we can help build it back to what it was,” said Paul, who works in finance, running the team on the side. He’s the guiding light of a new generation of CD Faialense, and he makes sure everyone gets a few of the clams that arrive at the table in steaming mounds, drowning in white wine sauce and parsley. “We want it to be like it used to be.”
The CD Faialense team of today is more than a nostalgic labor of love for Paul Correia. With a pipeline of players from the best local college programs, the likes of UNH, UMass Lowell, URI and Harvard, they’re building a reputation as the cream of the crop of amateur men’s league soccer in Eastern Massachusetts.
A first-place finish in the Bay State Soccer League (BSSL) Division One in 2023 and 2024, by huge margins of 11 and 10 points respectively, is a good indication of what they’re up to. It’s a stratospheric bar they’ve set.
“We want to be the amateur team that breaks through,” Paul said of the side’s ambitions as they look ahead to the Tournament Proper – and a date with Maine-based USL League One pros Portland Hearts of Pine – after winning four Open Division Qualifying Round games in the Fall. “Every player on our roster right now is a former Division-One college player – a lot of top guys fresh out of that competitive environment.”
Lucas Rezende, like Paul and a core group of the team's old guard, played his college ball at Merrimack University. He’s the starting goalkeeper and handles much of the organizing end of things. That includes keeping tabs on players for weekend games and whittling a working roster from a squad of 40.
Rezende, 28 and recently married, uses the word “revolution” to describe the change in the team when a group of current young players began to coalesce around the clubhouse on Cambridge Street.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by CD Faialense (@cdfaialense)
“It all started with Damian,” Rezende said, between bites of a huge steak smothered in garlic and topped with a fried egg. He gestures to Damian Attidore, who, at 25, isn’t far from his playing days at UMass Lowell – America East league mates of the reigning NCAA Champions the University of Vermont Catamounts.
“It took me a year to get him in,” laughed Razende, shaking his fork at Attidore, who teaches English and coaches the freshman team at nearby Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School. “He was playing hard-to-get and wouldn’t respond to my texts!”
“I was burnt out on playing,” smiled the 25-year-old Attidore, an outstanding winger and now one of the first names on the team sheet who “shows up to everything” according to Razende. “I had a few buddies on the team and they kept bugging me and eventually they dragged me along.”
It’s something Paul Correia is justifiably proud of. You can see it on his face. Assembling a new generation of players, all taking the field under the banner of CD Faialense. Filing back to the club for a beer and a bite after the game. It’s a blending of old and new that’s rare.
“This is something you need time to build – it’s a kind of heritage that you can’t buy,” added Felipe Guimaraes from the far end of the table. He’s 31 now and has been with the team since 2013. He was there through the lean years when, playing under the name PAC Lawrence and Merrimack Valley United, the side bounced up and down the lower reaches of the BSSL.
“Now we have that pipeline and players start talking to their friends and bringing them in,” said Guimaraes, a civil engineer who works on fire-escape technology and commutes in from New Hampshire. “Before you know it we’ve got something really good.”
More than just mortar and brick, there’s an essence here at the club. There’s something magical about the building – the barroom and the people who’ve made it what it is. The big challenge for the team, outlined by Crema, Italy native Mirko Nufi, 28, who passes on the steak in favor of an excellent grilled octopus, is “getting a field in the city – or across the river in Boston – it’s impossible.”
“The dream is to have a field nearby,” said Paul Correia, hoping to move on, someday, from their current home field 15 miles up the North Shore. “That way things can be like they used to be – you play the game and all the guys come back here to hang out. When the young guys get here and spend some time, have some food, they always fall in love with the place.”
View this post on Instagram A post shared by CD Faialense (@cdfaialense)
“It’s a family thing and these young guys are unique – really talented players and they’re still into it and playing just because they love it,” added Francisco
looking at his son and the batch of talented and committed players he’s helped assemble
A few old-timers are still at the bar when the night raps up with flan and strong coffee – maybe a cognac or two
There’s one last look at the jumble of trophies in the front window on the way out

DTA Engenharia was awarded two contracts after a public tender procedure: 1 for the design and construction of a new quay for the local fishing industry in Luís Correia and second to deepen the access channel to this new quay
Dutch Dredging was hired to work under the second contract and the company mobilized trailing suction hopper dredger Lesse at the end of September 2023
the 3.5km long canal was less than 2 meters deep in some places and had to be deepened to -7m
This required moving more than half a million cubic meters of material
Some of the dredged material was reused for the construction of the new quay
In addition to the limited space for maneuvering
the strong current and the simultaneous work on the new quay also posed challenges
“The Lesse has taken on these challenges and
good maneuvering properties and experienced crew and project team
has completed the work within the set period and budget,” Dutch Dredging said in the announcement
TSHD Lesse left for her next project in Brazil leaving behind a satisfied customer who festively opened the deepened canal and the new quay shortly afterwards

The Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course will host the Portugal Masters for the 15th consecutive year this week since its inaugural staging in 2007
Golf Business News spoke to Dom Pedro Golf Chief Executive Officer
about how important the European Tour event is to the resort and what players can expect from the course in 2021
the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course has hosted the Portugal Masters for 15 years now
How special does it feel for the resort to have hosted the event every year since its inauguration into the European Tour
Whenever you host a European Tour event it is always a special feeling
but this year is even more special given that it is 15 years since we first started staging the tournament
We are proud that the European Tour continues to choose us as their preferred venue in the Algarve and it is our responsibility as hosts to prepare the course in the best possible way for the players to enjoy
In the 15 years that we have been hosting the event
there has been many memorable moments and we hope that this year’s tournament will be no different
Our greenkeeping team has been working hard in the build-up to the event to help set up the course in such a way that we can showcase the best of golf in the Algarve to everyone watching
The resort started hosting the event in 2007
What was the process behind Dom Pedro being chosen to put on the tournament
After the Victoria Course was officially opened in 2004
the aim was to make sure the course should host a major golf event in the near future
Having been designed by seven-time Major champion and golf legend Arnold Palmer
such an event would be instrumental to raising awareness and creating recognition for both the championship course and golf in the Algarve region
the then owners were able to secure the World Cup of Golf in 2005
Following the successful staging of the event
with the support of Turismo de Portugal (the National Tourism Board) and the Algarve Tourism Board
there was an idea to approach the European Tour
to propose an annual tournament in the Algarve
The proposal was taken onboard by the European Tour and a couple of years later
would be set up and hosted in Vilamoura at the Victoria Golf Course
the course has hosted the event for 15 years in a row
Over those 15 years the Portugal Masters has had some high-profile winners of the tournament
Do you have a favourite edition of the tournament or stand-out moment
The Portugal Masters has created a number of memorable moments that will live long in our memory
The standout moment for me would be when Oli Fisher became the first player on the European Tour to shoot a round of 59 in 2018
This was an incredible moment for all who were at the event and one that isn’t likely to be beaten at the Portugal Masters for many years to come
Another memory that springs to mind would be in 2015 when Andy Sullivan produced a scintillating performance to win the tournament by a record nine shots over fellow Englishman Chris Wood
This is followed closely by Padraig Harrington’s 2nd shot to the 18th hole on the Sunday in 2016 to make birdie and win the Portugal Masters
I can’t wait to see what this year’s event has in store for us
I’m sure there will be plenty more special moments created
Course preparation plays an important role in the build-up to the event
Are you able to provide us with an insight into how the greenkeeping team prepares the courses
Our main ambition when hosting the event each year is to always make sure the course reaches its optimum condition in the couple of weeks leading up to the start of the tournament
they are able to carefully manage the process to allow the course to remain at this point until the first tee shot is struck on the Thursday
Preparations normally start months in advance
with the course maintenance team working hard to make sure every little detail is accounted for
The greenkeeping team has been altering the pace of the greens and fairways so that they will be firm and fast allowing players to really attack the course and get value for money with their shots throughout the week
Our aim is to provide both players and spectators with an entertaining spectacle during the event
showcasing the best of the Dom Pedro Hotels & Golf experience and Vilamoura as one of the best ranked tourism destinations in the Algarve
One of the unique aspects of the resort is that it compromises of five golf courses in Vilamoura
Can you explain how your team manages to maintain all five to such a good condition
especially when it is hosting a European Tour event as well
Having to manage five championship courses at the same time is a unique challenge and one that our team at Dom Pedro Hotels & Golf Collection thrives on
we not only have to make sure the Victoria Course is being conditioned to European Tour standards
but also that the other courses are ready to welcome a high volume of golfers each day
The team values the conditioning on each and every one of the courses at the resort and does its upmost to make sure the experience for golfers always remains the same throughout the year
makes the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course such a good one to host an event of this size
And what are some of the hallmark design traits implemented by Arnold Palmer
The Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course was built with the intention of hosting large scale events such as the European Tour
the course showcases generous and undulating greens with large fairways and numerous water hazards that are always in action throughout the round
Arnold Palmer and his team created the course with both professional and amateur golfers in mind
They wanted all golfers to have a unique golfing experience
with generous grassed areas and bunkers positioned away from the middle of the fairways
What are the key holes on the course that players must watch out for
The front nine has a couple of difficult holes
but it is the action on the back nine that will make or break a player’s tournament
a short par-4 where golfers can attempt to drive the green and set up an eagle opportunity
the signature holes on the course are the 17th and 18th
The 17th provides an eagle opportunity for the longer hitters
This will be especially true when the pin is either towards the front of the green or towards the right-hand side as the water will be most in play there.
where players must decide whether to play strategically or risk bringing the water into play with an attempt at birdie on the final shot into the green
I’m confident that this year’s tournament will once again be decided on the final day on either of these two holes
The event is usually a big moment for both Dom Pedro and the Algarve each year
How important is this year’s event to the resort and the Algarve given what everyone has experienced over the last 18 months with the pandemic
This year’s event is extremely important as the Portuguese golf industry continues to recover from the offset of the pandemic
The last 18 months has seen many golf courses in Portugal closed for several months to prevent the spread of the virus
as well as fewer golfers travelling from aboard due to the travel restrictions in place
was hit quite hard by the pandemic and the resort has had to adapt to the new situation to create a safe environment for tourists
With the world returning to some sort of normalcy
the Portugal Masters is key to showcasing the best of Dom Pedro and the Algarve ahead of 2022
golf rounds and revenue will begin to reach figures close to where they were in 2019
Our team has been working hard to present the courses and facilities at Dom Pedro Hotels & Golf Collection in a splendid manner and demonstrate why we are renowned as being one of the best resorts in the Algarve to attract more golfers after the tournament has concluded
Dom Pedro is renowned as being one of the favourite venues for players on the European Tour
What about the resort and the region do you think they enjoy the most
The Algarve is one of the most popular golfing destinations in the world
Many of the European Tour’s best players love visiting the region
not only because it sees up to 330 days of sunshine a year
but because of the quality of the golf courses that are on offer
we are often able to accommodate many of the families who accompany the players whilst they are playing in the tournament
Dom Pedro provides them with a safe environment to enjoy all of the facilities and the warm climate
The standard of the courses at Dom Pedro Golf is also a key reason for why golfers love visiting the region
Each and every course maintains a good level of consistency across the year
and the Victoria Golf Course in particular presents players on the European Tour with a healthy balance
allowing them to play aggressively and make low scores

“Jenny no longer works for any of the companies that fall under the Towne House brand,” said Frank
“She’s going on to work for her jewelry company

“It looks like a really good fit for the four of them.”
According to the Massachusetts Secretary of State online corporation database

7 takeaways from his appeal: Were Jasiel Correia's claims of success just 'puffery'?
Correia was home for the holidays to work at Towne House Correia is expected to report to a New Hampshire federal prison on April 22 to serve a six-year sentence for government corruption after he was elected the city’s youngest mayor in 2015 and for defrauding investors in his company
SnoOwl and tax evasion before he became mayor.
Towne House, with its multi-venue restaurants
bars and a private cigar-smoking club under one roof, became known outside of Fall River when Correia successfully convinced U.S

Woodlock has granted Correia seven delays to report to prison
some due to the COVID pandemic and others related to his appeal of his federal conviction
Woodlock denied Correia’s request to stay out of prison until his appeal is resolved
Running out of options: Judge denies Jasiel Correia's bid to stay free pending appeal. But his fight isn't over.
He has the ability to appeal that denial to the First Circuit Court of Appeals.
Frank said Correia was also no longer an employee at the Purchase Street restaurant.
he was never an officer or director of the business,” said Frank

not least because Maria’s 37th project was a mammoth undertaking
“Unlike everything else we’ve done so far,” he says
jam-packed with stories and hurdles that we fought to overcome.”
“It would be a much more exclusive and different bike,” says Luis
“Our proposal had as its epicenter the Le Mans MK1 model—a motorcycle whose history is associated with classic racing
and which already had plenty of commercial value.”
the bike had already taken part in classic tournaments with its previous owner
engine … everything had been altered or modified
completely defacing the basis of the original Le Mans.”
As soon as the bike was on the bench and stripped down
Maria ran into their first problem: the frame number didn’t match the papers
This wouldn’t have been a problem for a track-only bike
but the new owner wanted to ride it on the street
and getting it registered in France would be a nightmare
After an extensive search and with a little luck
the crew found an original frame with French papers
So the motor went off to an expert: Michael Behrendt at HMB Guzzi in Röttenbach
and changed the clutch to a competition-spec setup
restored by Maria and ultrasonically cleaned
The Guzzi demanded an exhaust to match its engine spec
so the team collaborated with a supplier to design a two-into-one-into-two stainless steel system
The front forks were upgraded with a whole whack of new parts
sprung to match the bike and owner’s weight
but in the end the drum brake that the bike came with suited the overall style better
Maria couldn’t leave it stock—so they upgraded it with a custom lever system to sharpen its response
The front brake was upgraded with floating discs
a custom-made Brembo kit from Stein-Dinse Guzzi
“The problem was that Mr. Libanore would only sell something to those who would visit and meet him in person,” says Luis, “and convince him to sell his pieces, while paying for them in cash. Mr. Libanore is still alive and is currently 90 years old. It is worth visiting his workshop just to see his work
He is regarded as a legend for this sort of work.”
The tank was then lined inside and painted
and the tail section was capped off with a simple hit of brown quilted leather

which is carrying out an ambitious project to produce hydrogen and ammonia in the Parnaiba economic zone (Piaui State) in Brazil
has just secured financing and long-term rights to export hydrogen from the port of Luis Correia
Founded in 2023 and headed by Bart Biebuyck (formerly of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership)
Green Energy Park is investing to produce green hydrogen and its derivatives (including decarbonated ammonia)
The company is currently working on two projects
one in Croatia (on the island of Krk near the Adriatic Sea) and the other in Brazil
The plant will be built on a 310-hectare site to produce hydrogen and ammonia from renewable energy sources
Green Energy Park will deliver hydrogen to customers in industry and mobility
In connection to this project, the company has just raised funds totalling $30 million. The funds were provided by strategic partners, customers and financial institutions. At the same time, Green Energy Park has negotiated long-term rights to export hydrogen from the brand new Luis Correia port
The ambition of the start-up is to produce low-cost hydrogen on a gigawatt scale
“Piaui is set to become our ground zero of the hydrogen revolution,” stated Bart Biebuyck
“The State of Piaui offers some of the best conditions in the world for producing green hydrogen
and indeed the world” commented Victor Hugo Almeida

That’s because it was built with one purpose in mind: to get dirty
“One is because I can fall as many times has I want
without being worried about damaging something
The other is because I’ve always wanted a bike with this look
because it was made with old parts that I had in stock.”
Luis has already put his scrambler Triumph through its paces
and reports that it’s agile and aggressive
He’s christened it the Red Baron—“because it’s a war machine!”

But this 1980-model BMW R100 RS was in need of complete salvation when it landed on Maria Motorcycles‘ workbench
Before they could turn it into the handsome machine you see here
they had to undo some nasty ‘custom’ work
“We decided to divide the project into two stages: Stage One was to recover the most out of the original parts
Stage Two was to create a classic style that fit our client’s ideal.”
“One crazy thing we did was to polish the wheels,” says Luis
“We’ve never seen a BMW with the wheels polished
Their client’s love for old boxers stopped Maria from swapping out the tank for something smaller
But the rear-end of the bike has been reworked—with a custom-made subframe and a hand-covered sheepskin leather seat
Mounting the rear fender using traditional stays rather than the subframe was a deliberate move
to keep the bike looking as classic as possible
The tires are Diamond-patterned numbers from Coker—“Almost mandatory for this kind of bike,” Luis jokes
New front discs and Hel lines give the brakes a little more bite
while a pair of aftermarket mufflers improve the soundtrack
Every fastener has been polished or swapped out for a stainless steel replacement
Maria designed and laser cut various brass details to mount throughout the bike
This once-hacked airhead is now the sort of machine we’d pick for an elegant Sunday ride
Not that it’s a slouch—Luis tells us the mods have made for a lighter
Luis Correia and his crew at Maria Motorcycles weren’t keen to cut into their client’s 1992 Africa Twin either
But it wasn’t just down to reverence for the adventure sports icon
Plus, the recently acquired Africa Twin was in a pretty terrible condition. So the Portuguese crew stripped it down without too much remorse, and set about transforming it. “The idea was to make an old Dakar dirt bike,” says Luis
“the engine looks like it’s from a classic bike from the 70s.”
Just about all the Africa Twin’s bodywork is gone now
but modified it extensively—removing the original fairing mounts
Maria also built a pair of aluminum fenders
and a set of crash bars—to protect the tank and motor when things get awkward in the dirt
The taillight is tucked away underneath the upper fender
and there are discreet LED turn signals all round
The license plate’s mounted on a hand-made bracket behind the wheel
they also built a set of stainless steel exhaust headers to the exact same design as the OEM numbers
Every last inch of the Africa Twin’s been cleaned up
And any part that needed it was either powder coated
Maria have called the Africa Twin ‘Kalahari,’ as a tribute to one of the continent’s driest deserts
Which is exactly where we’d love to take it

So it’s not surprising that the Maria guys hoarded a low mileage 1980 XS650
a client came along and convinced them to customize it for him
The donor was mechanically in tiptop shape—so the crew didn’t need to crack the engine open
so they cleaned it up and repainted the covers black
wheels and any other parts that needed a refresh
The frame’s been shortened and looped at the rear
and the tail light and plate relocated to the left side
the team switched the bars out for a laid-back set from LSL
classic Posh grips and new levers with a Magura master brake cylinder
Then there’s the exhaust; a high-riding twin muffler system
“We know that the muffler position is something controversial,” says Luis
But of course we tested it and it’s pretty far from the rider
We’ve always known Maria Motorcycles to be masters of good taste
to the point that the Firestone Deluxe Champion tires fit right in
And as we’ve come to expect from this crew
the paint job is sublime; a simple green with white accents
so this one brought back some old memories from the beginning.”
This custom Honda CB750 is a testament to the Seven-Fifty’s enduring appeal. It comes from Maria Motorcycles in Portugal
and it’s dripping with the laid-back coastal style and vivid colors that the workshop is known for
you’ll spot an assortment of modern upgrades too
Maria started with an extremely tidy 1993-model CB750 F2 donor
the engine needed nothing more than a quick once-over
The only significant engine work happened on the outside
where Maria cleaned and polished the covers for a better-than-new finish
Under the hood, Maria ripped out all of the CB’s wiring and started over. A fresh wiring loom now runs off Motogadget’s ubiquitous Mo.unit controller
which helps to keep things clean and simple
A set of Öhlins piggyback shocks sit out back
set up specifically for the bike’s owner
The 17” laced wheels are from Jonich in Italy and feature polished alloy rims
A CNC-machined fuel cap was retrofitted too
and new side covers were shaped from aluminum
The paint job even extends to the headlight; an up-cycled Harley-Davidson part
the cockpit is dressed with new handlebars
and an assortment of Motogadget bits that include the speedo
The ignition has been relocated to the side of the bike
and tiny Motogadget LED turn signals sit sneakily at both ends
“Our client also had a rebuilt engine and a few other parts,” reports Luis Correia of Maria
“But there was no overall concept for the bike
Maria decided to build a bike that felt smaller and sat lower than the original
with the wheels dominating the overall look more
“Not the thin and shy wheels that came with it originally!”
The front suspension was rebuilt and shortened a little
with stubby Bitubo shocks dropping the rear end to match
The tank was reprofiled to suit the lower stance
and the airbox was modified to clean up the gap behind the engine
Simple controls and instruments add to the clean look

ProductionBrazilian state buys stake in 10.8GW green hydrogen project — 'it will make things easier'
says developerThe Green Energy Park in Piauí aims to export most of its volumes to Europe
The bike in question is “Silly Kid”: a 2006 Bonnie that belongs to a good friend of the workshop
“It was one of our first projects,” says Maria’s Luis Correia
“A trial bike for many things we wanted to experiment with.”
Last time the Bonnie left Maria’s workshop
Maria had also fitted new handlebars and controls
and trimmed the switchgear down—moving the ignition and start button to the left side of the bike in the process
“He wanted it to be as simple as possible in terms of equipment,” explains Luis
“with a front end similar to a competition dirt bike.” So Maria traded the headlight for a discreet LED strip and cleaned up the front end still further
To improve handling the front suspension was shortened and stiffened—matched up to an existing set of Bitubo rear shocks
The tires are Metzeler Tourances: dual-sport items with a road bias
with accents picked up by new Posh grips and a bright red front sprocket cover
The process comes with challenges: Most thumpers built in the ’80s and ’90s celebrated function over form
but that means builders have to contend with clumsy bodywork and awkward lines
Correia and his crew decided to fuse the vibe of old
small-capacity city bikes with the go-anywhere attitude of a dual-sport
Their first hurdle was the XT600’s asymmetrical
they managed to fabricate a new subframe and reroute the exhaust headers—adding a Spark muffler in the process
Maria also lowered the forks and installed a Hagon spring kit
The front has dropped in size from 21” to 18”—giving the XT a little more visual balance
Most of the XT600’s finishes are dark and subtle
but Maria couldn’t resist adding a splash of color
“Most people see it as a dirty and aggressive bike,” says Luis
“but the lollipop color of the tank suggests the lovely curves of bikes like Vespas.”
As for the dash of orange on the headlight: that was added just for kicks
Custom XJRs of both the new and old variety are now streaming onto the interwebs. This is the latest one to hit our desks—an imposing ’99-spec machine from the Portuguese maestros at Maria Motorcycles
the new owner wanted something fresh—so he left it up to Maria to conceive a new design
Maria liked the shape of the XJR’s stock fuel tank
maintaining the same profile in a slimmer package that would further emphasis the size of the engine
Under the seat unit is a custom-made electronics tray
a pair of Lithium-ion batteries and a Motogadget m-Unit controller (around which the bike’s been rewired)
There are plenty of nice off-the-shelf parts too
The wheels are 17-inch Kineo tubeless units
wrapped in grippy Continental ContiRoad Attack rubber
A Renthal chain and sprockets transmit the power to the back wheel
and the front forks have been upgraded with heavier oil and Öhlins springs
the paint is exemplary: slick and well thought out
since we’ve removed many of the original parts,” Luis says
“It runs really smoothly at low speeds—but when you turn the throttle it gets really scary!”

Developer Stanton Renaissance is poised to construct a mixed-use condo development in downtown Hamilton that incorporates elements of the historic James Street Baptist Church
the church was designed by architect Joseph Connolly in the Gothic Revival style
An estimated 20,000 square feet of the stone façade will be preserved
"We put on our thinking caps and came up with a way to incorporate the most important heritage elements associated with the church," says Drew Hauser
a principal in Hamilton’s McCallum Sather Architects Inc
the 30-storey project will incorporate a public galleria and retail space in addition to the condo units
The front façade and bell tower are being preserved
More than 1,200 square feet of stained glass from the demolished part of the church is being re-used in the building
The project is being undertaken by a team that includes structural engineers Quinn Dressel Associates and mechanical engineers R

Cristiano Ronaldo said in court on Monday that he had complete trust in his advisers
adding that they "are the best" and have told him he is not guilty of tax fraud
according to a transcript that has appeared in the Spanish media
The Real Madrid star is also reported to have said his complex tax structure was designed not by his agent Jorge Mendes or anybody at Gestifute
but by English experts recommended by his former club Manchester United
Ronaldo appeared for 90 minutes in front of judge Monica Gomez Ferrer in Madrid
later issuing a statement via Gestifute in which he strongly denied the case brought by prosecutors at Spain's tax agency
who maintain that he used a web of companies in Ireland and the British Virgin Islands to avoid paying at least €14.7 million in taxes due on image rights income
The Portugal captain told the judge he does not personally know much about tax laws but has no problem paying well to get the best advice, according to his testimony, which was leaked to Spanish news agency EFE
"I do not understand much of this -- I have only six years in school
and the only thing I know is to play football well," Ronaldo reportedly said
Spain's Hacienda tax authority has also investigated the returns of a number of other Gestifute clients
including current United manager Jose Mourinho
Mendes himself gave evidence to judge Gomez Ferrer regarding Falcao's affairs
and the agent and his nephew Luis Correia are expected to be called again in the Ronaldo case
Cristiano Ronaldo appeared in court on Monday. Sonia Canada/Getty ImagesRonaldo reportedly told the judge that Mendes and Correia were not responsible for his tax structure
which dated from his time at Old Trafford and had been designed by a lawyer recommended by United
"Jorge's speciality is getting the best contracts for players," he said
Polaris is a company managed by Luis Correia
which looks after my publicity and sponsorships
When I arrived in England they told me how things worked there
Chris told me that this was what all footballers do
but off the pitch I just want to be like everyone else."
Ronaldo currently earns an estimated $93m a year, according to Forbes
with approximately half coming from image rights deals with his many sponsors
Ronaldo said he was aware he earned a lot of money
but always told his advisers to make sure he paid his taxes in full
so he did not understand why he was now suspected of fraud
Forbes magazine publishes everything that I earn
I know I earn good money but they all [his advisers] know that I want to pay [taxes due]
they told me that I have not done anything wrong
that I did everything with the best intentions
The truth is I do not know what I am doing here."
Ronaldo also explained the sale of his personal image rights up to 2020 to Singaporean businessman and Valencia owner Peter Lim in June 2015
"In 2014-15 I ceded my rights to Peter Lim," he said

Mendes has made enormous money from football as his client players have joined United
Chelsea and Real Madrid; he is reported to have received €3.6m of the €9m United paid for Bébé
earned handsomely when Real Madrid signed Ronaldo from United for £81m in 2009
describing itself as "an annual meeting for all [football's] main market operators"
declared Mendes "agent of the year" for 2010 accompanied by a video featuring high praise from Mourinho and Ronaldo
Mendes's own Gestifute agency humbly interpreted the award on its website as: "Jorge Mendes proclaimed world's best businessman"
Yet the football public still knows painfully little about how the game's multimillion‑pound transfer business is done
or how so-called "super-agents" actually earn their money
After United's extraordinary signing of Bébé his former agent
complained he had been cut off by the player before Mendes moved in and earned prodigiously from the €9m (£7.5m) deal
the Guardian has discovered there is a lawsuit against Mendes proceeding at glacial pace through the concrete-pillared district court in Porto brought by Formation
the English football agency formerly run by Paul Stretford
It exposes an illuminating, bitterly disputed account of Mendes's rise to the big time, with Formation claiming Mendes reneged on a partnership with it once his client, Mourinho, moved to Chelsea as manager
The case also lays bare what supporters are never told of how football really works
including exactly how much Mendes was paid when three of his clients – Carvalho
Paulo Ferreira and Tiago Mendes – were signed by Mourinho for Chelsea in July 2004
Chelsea's contracts both with the players and with Mendes
show that Chelsea paid Mendes for acting both for the players and the club
but presented €2.45m not just as payment for completing the transfers
including ensuring his millionaire players turned up for training on time
All of that was permitted at the time by the Football Association
allows agents to act for both clubs and players in the same transfer
The origins of the falling out between Formation and Mendes lie in Lisbon, in March 2002. There Stretford was introduced to Luis Correia, Mendes's nephew and a Gestifute director, by Carlos Freitas, a Sporting Lisbon director
who suggested they work together to move Portuguese players to England's money-soaked Premier League
with close relationships at Sporting and Porto
had signed up most of Portugal's fine generation of players
many of whom would come to prominence when Mourinho's Porto won the 2004 Champions League
Formation argues that it agreed with Mendes to promote and represent Gestifute's Portuguese players in England
to share fees equally when moves were concluded
and that in May 2003 the two agencies signed a written agreement to that effect
Formation claims it shared its agents' fees exactly 50-50 in June 2002 when Sporting's Hugo Viana signed for Newcastle – Mendes's first major international deal – then when Nuno Capucho joined Rangers in June 2003
share part of the fee he received from United when Ronaldo signed from Sporting Lisbon as a miraculously gifted 18-year-old in August 2003
after Mourinho joined Chelsea the following summer and immediately signed Carvalho
The relationship between the two agencies broke down
for half the fees Mendes was paid in those Chelsea deals
the former Manchester City and Stoke City midfielder who was the main Formation agent promoting Gestifute players in England
"I gave two and a half years of my life to Mendes," Henry
Mendes's Gestifute company in Porto claimed it received "nada" – nothing – when Carvalho
Formation's Lisbon-based lawyers reacted by obtaining
which show that Chelsea paid Gestifute €2.9m in total when the players signed
Formation accused Gestifute in court documents of having "lied barefacedly and shamelessly" for arguing it was paid nothing
Gestifute responded that its defence was correct because the €2.9m had been paid to Gestifute International Limited
a company registered in Ireland where corporate tax rates are much lower
right up until the player signed for United
For all that Mendes is now dubbed a "super-agent"
involved with players across Europe and South America
often part-owning their "economic rights"
it is generally acknowledged that Hugo Viana
a slight 19-year -old who did not flourish at Newcastle
was Mendes's first major international football transfer
Formation says it did most of the work; Henry had flown for his first meeting with Mendes in May 2002 to Switzerland
where Portugal's Under-21 team were playing Italy in the European Championships
then young European footballer of the year
who had very close links with Newcastle – Kenneth Shepherd
went with Henry to watch Viana in the next game
were meeting Mendes and Sporting directors in Lisbon to finalise Newcastle's signing of Viana
"Mendes was big in Portugal," says Henry
we'd got one of his players a move to a major club and made him a lot of money."
and although no written partnership contract with Gestifute was yet in place
Formation agreed to share the fee exactly equally
Stretford and Henry continued to promote Gestifute players to English clubs
whom they took to meet Wenger at Arsenal's training ground in November 2002
The two agencies signed the formal partnership agreement
The first deal concluded after that was not Ronaldo but the winger Nuno Capucho
When United gazumped Arsenal for the signing of Ronaldo – paying £12.24m
far more than the €6m Arsenal were discussing – Mendes handled negotiations directly with Sir Alex Ferguson and Kenyon
Mendes told Stretford his fee for the Ronaldo deal was €400,000 and offered to pay Formation £80,000 in full settlement
Formation claims Stretford accepted because he wanted to preserve a profitable relationship
so it was deeply aggrieved when United published in their 2004 accounts that the payment to agents on the Ronaldo deal had been £1.129m
Formation says it pressed on with the partnership
until after Porto beat Monaco 3-0 in the Champions League final on 26 May 2004
Pedro Mendes and Deco – all Mendes clients
Chelsea then paid Porto £13.2m to sign Ferreira
and did not report his fees to Formation or pay it anything
Mendes reacted by saying Formation had now itself breached their contract
so he would regard the partnership as ended
Formation sued Gestifute for the half of the fees it claimed were due
obtained via court order in Portugal and which the Guardian has seen
reveal that the club paid Gestifute €2.9m in agents' fees
and shine a revelatory light into how football works
permitted to act for both a club and a player in transfer deals
Although that is an apparent breach of Fifa rules requiring agents to act with no conflicts of interest
Subsequently the FA introduced a rule requiring players
but after an outcry by agents they are now allowed to act for both again
as long as the players state they are happy with the arrangement
Ferreira and Tiago were all for three years and set out the players' salaries – Carvalho starting on £2.18m a year "basic"
plus bonuses and benefits including all housing costs; Ferreira £1.55m a year basic
Each included an agent's fee of €150,000 paid by the club to Gestifute SA
Chelsea had separate agreements to pay much more
the three contracts include that lower fee
to Gestifute for "acting on the player's behalf"
which also appeared in each player's own contract
Then there are bigger payments: €1,050,000 for the Carvalho deal
€350,000 in Tiago's – €2.45m in total – for three duties ostensibly nothing to do with acting on the transfer itself
The first was to pay Mendes "to facilitate the renegotiation of the player's contract with the club"
was to "look after the wellbeing of the player … the agent will do his best to ensure that the player … timeously [sic] attends training and matches." The third was for Mendes to "act as a consultant … to secure any image rights attached to the player for the club"
the FA has confirmed that Chelsea paid the whole €2.9m through it
as English football's "transfer clearing house"
Sources close to the arrangement have told the Guardian this was common practice at the time
with clubs describing such duties in contracts
indicating the fees were not paid to the agent for working on behalf of the club in the transfer
declined to comment when asked why they had framed Mendes's agents' fees as payment for such services
The disclosure of these contracts led Formation's lawyers to accuse Gestifute of having "lied barefacedly and shamelessly" when it claimed it had received "no commission whatsoever" for the Chelsea deals
Gestifute's lawyers responded by saying that statement was true
because all payments were to Gestifute International
Contacted by the Guardian with a series of questions about the case
a spokesman for Gestifute said: "This is a normal commercial dispute
and we are very confident that the Court will decide on our favour." Formation would not discuss the issues
saying: "We are making no comment as there is currently a legal dispute with Gestifute waiting to be heard in Portugal."
The garland of "super-agent" is accorded to just one or two of football's fixers
informed by very little insight into what they actually do
For Jorge Mendes the case crawling through the court in Porto reveals a great deal about how he – and football at the highest level – conducts their business

Facebook executives urged Cristiano Ronaldo’s management team to start a Facebook page for him
you have to be there,” the Facebook people said
“He has the potential to get to 10 million followers.”
which manages the Portuguese footballer’s image rights
recalls how Polaris replied: “We don’t believe you
in 2009 Ronaldo quietly debuted on Facebook
he used social media to announce the birth of his son by an unnamed mother
Last month Ronaldo became the world’s first athlete to hit 100 million Facebook followers
The only human with more is the singer Shakira
many big football clubs weren’t even on Twitter or Facebook
group managing director of Manchester United
boasts that his club generates “more engagement” on Facebook than any celebrity from any field or any other sports team on earth
Big clubs and players aren’t doing this out of vanity
They have long known they have legions of fans worldwide
United claims to have 659 million supporters
But football’s problem was that it never had a way of reaching those people
China’s Weibo and other platforms are enabling clubs and players to compile computer databases of their fans
The next step: to turn the fans’ love into money at last
This is the new quest of the football industry
Last year Real Madrid announced revenues of €521m
the highest for any sports club in history
the Finnish financial analyst Matias Möttölä calculated that in terms of revenue
the club would have been only the 120th largest company in Finland
(Real’s latest annual revenues were €604m.) And few clubs make profits
Footballers are famous and big clubs are global brands
But football has always struggled with what economists call appropriability: clubs cannot make money out of (cannot appropriate) more than a tiny share of fans’ love for football
Imagine a Manchester United fan in Kuala Lumpur called Abdul
let alone to United’s stadium Old Trafford
scours the internet for United news and watches their games on TV in a local restaurant
And yet the club’s total income from Abdul is zero
Of the 1.3 billion-plus people on Facebook
a Facebook executive who handles sports and entertainment
told last month’s International Football Arena (IFA) conference on football and social media in Berlin
(Disclosure: I was a paid moderator there.)
Social media have become an essential element of sports fandom
Many young people in particular watch games while bantering with other fans on their mobile phones – the so-called “second screen”
sport accounted for just 1.3 per cent of TV programming but 41 per cent of TV-related tweets
Global interest in football dwarfs other sports
The 2010 World Cup generated more searches than the 2012 summer Olympics
This summer’s World Cup was surely the biggest media event in history
Here are some findings from a “Google Trends” report on the tournament:
he racked up four times more searches than his compatriot Pope Francis © Getty● After Argentina’s Angel Di Maria scored against Switzerland
he racked up four times more global Google searches than his compatriot Pope Francis;
● After Belgium’s Kevin de Bruyne scored against the US
“USA searches for the match were higher than searches for anything else
Big European clubs are finally winning fans in China
the US and Indonesia – countries that between them account for 45 per cent of humanity
Social media is a way to reach these people
Arnold told this month’s Dublin Web Summit
United joined Facebook only in 2010 (it now has 61.5 million followers)
United probably gets more media coverage than any British company
If its Facebook page were hacked – as has happened to some corporations – it would be global news
Footballers are constantly getting into trouble for things they say online
Rio Ferdinand of Queens Park Rangers was recently suspended by the English Football Association after a spat on Twitter in which he referred to a heckler’s mum with the obscene slang term “sket”
the FA charged 60 participants in football for inappropriate comments on social media
“We are concerned about Twitter and things going out of the club that should not go out
It is important to keep that under control.”
It is important to keep that under control
It’s partly for fear of scandal that Ronaldo doesn’t put up his own posts on Facebook
so he will typically send his handlers a message and let them find the right words and post it
Sometimes he sends them a photo from a restaurant dinner but he doesn’t “share” nearly as much as image rights manager Polaris Sports would like
Football’s caution irritates Facebook’s Miller
Most young people are used to wild spontaneous exchanges on social media
and often haven’t even heard of the newspaper that breaks a scandal
clubs now issue their players with endless rules of what not to say online
But football has belatedly come to see social media as a business opportunity
A year ago Borussia Dortmund tweeted a photograph of its coach
The focus of the picture was the pen with which he signed
Quite by chance – it had presumably been the nearest thing to hand – it was a Stabilo pen
A club that understands social media is worth more to sponsors
soon after United plunged into social media
the club signed a deal for shirt sponsorship with Chevrolet for £47m a year
But the endgame for clubs like United goes way beyond sponsorship
United can make contact with fans like Abdul
the club could become a de facto database company
Then its value would lie chiefly in its knowledge of the identities and consumption habits of its supporters
Companies in many sectors are pursuing much the same goal
They offer services for free; in return the user gives them his or her identity
But football clubs’ databases could be particularly valuable
big clubs have more social-media followers than regular companies: United have more than either Nike or McDonald’s
clubs – unlike most corporations – command love and loyalty
“A fan is the most emotional thing in the world
He will do everything,” Kaiser told the IFA conference
If you can reach the fan through his second screen while he’s watching a game
you catch him at a moment of maximum emotion
Soon a club’s database will allow it to tailor offers to each individual fan
but it can also help much bigger companies sell to him
if a club could give an automobile company a list of twenty-something German male fans who earn more than €50,000 and need a new car
Kaiser says: “The intelligent club in the future will say
It’s mine.” The company will have to fork out
A database of 25 million fans could be worth billions of euros
big clubs have begun employing unprecedented numbers of sophisticated executives
You now hear football officials bandying about the acronym “CRM” (customer-relationship management)
chief revenue officer of Juventus and a veteran of the tobacco company Philip Morris
says: “We want to apply a proper CRM strategy
The ability to know our supporters and also influence them is fundamental for us to generate higher revenues.” Juve has found that fans are happy to give the club their information
A club’s database will allow it to tailor offers to each individual fan
Clubs need to find out exactly who each fan is
It’s not enough to know that “Abdul in KL” follows you on Twitter
An official of the Portuguese club Benfica asked the IFA conference: “How can I make money from the people who will never engage with me directly but are on our Facebook page
founder of the online data security firm WISeKey
Fans who download it will have to register
Kaiser is sceptical that the clubs – few of which are cutting-edge businesses – will win the battle to build serious identity databases
a senior executive of the midsized German club Wolfsburg
listened rapt to the visions of the future at the IFA conference
all the social-media systems are black boxes
The core business of the club is to play football.” Some clubs are also understandably sceptical of the social-media hype
they remember the rise and fall first of the pay-per-view hype
the video has had nearly 1 million YouTube views
Big clubs are hiring teams of video film-makers
“This is quite a big cultural change in the organisation,” notes Calvo of Juventus
Most of Juve’s new employees come not from other football clubs but from other sectors
“A football club like Bayern Munich is a media production company,” Stefan Mennerich
Bayern’s social-media team travel with the players and stay in the same hotels
so they can give fans a club-approved inside view
“We are a mobile-first media organisation,” says Arnold
“We operate in 18 languages – a huge volume of work for us
in terms of being culturally appropriate.”
One side effect of all this work: clubs now compete with traditional media
Today you can go straight to Arsenal’s Facebook page
where the club posts a video of the line-up before each match and an exclusive player interview after it
No outside journalist can get this kind of access
many clubs and players have built larger audiences than traditional media
Ronaldo has 31.3 million Twitter followers
more than CNN’s main account and The New York Times combined
Many players now cut out journalists by speaking straight to fans
Rio Ferdinand complained that journalists “paint that picture and you see a caricature of you evolve
had been “the biggest thing in my armoury” in changing his image
In 2012 he posted four “teaser” tweets about knitting
The fifth tweet: a picture of himself opening a Snickers bar
Ferdinand was reported to the Advertising Standards Authority for covert advertising
greedy shilling of this sort can hurt the image of players and clubs
Fans don’t like it when their beloved clubs and players behave like rapaciously commercial
privacy-invading offshoots of the US National Security Agency
Football needs to tread carefully in social media
“They want to be respected for their love of the club.”
Fans have been complaining for 20 years that football has become too commercialised
not many of them seem to have been put off
the Scottish draper who founded the English Football League in 1888
was probably the first person to describe the sport as “big business”
The phrase has since become one of football’s clichés

While two young people were representing Bermuda in London for Commonwealth Day
other young people from across the Island gathered in the conference room of the XLGroup on Bermudiana Road to debate
share ideas and consider challenges and solutions confronting Commonwealth countries
including Bermuda.Organised and moderated by the officers of Youth Parliament Bermuda
the day-long Commonwealth Day Youth Summit explored the theme ‘connecting cultures’ and in particular what challenges may be preventing cultures from connecting in various Commonwealth nations and what solutions there might be to overcoming these challenges.“They improvised; they worked together; they sought information and they created presentations,” explained Youth Parliament Premier Ryan Robinson Perinchief.Divided into groups of eight or nine
the representatives had to consider one of several issues
hindering cultural connections between Commonwealth countries
and the reaching of the eight Millennium Development Goals to reduce global poverty. In the morning

“This House believes persons in this country should be made by law to vote” and then made their presentations to the judges who were Miss Bermuda Jana-lynn Outerbridge

Tariq Brown and Cameron Holdipp (Impact) and Michaela Ratteray (Saltus).Prizes were awarded to students based on their participation in their groups and their presentation skills

and it was amazing how the participants improvised.”Pleased with how well-planned and well-thought-out the day was

Former Dundalk goalkeeper Gary Rogers has been hired as a full-time Irish scout by GestiFute
the company founded and headed by super agent Jorge Mendes
Rogers has confirmed to Independent.ie that he started a new role earlier this month which will involve identifying talent on these shores on behalf of the group that is a major player in the European football market
GestiFute's international headquarters are in Dublin with a small number of staff based here involved in the business and finance operations of a global force that has a star-studded roster of clients headed by Cristiano Ronaldo
Ireland international Matt Doherty signed up with Mendes' group ahead of his transfer from Wolves to Jose Mourinho's Spurs last summer
But the recruitment of Rogers is a new departure aimed at sourcing promising local youngsters at the beginning of their journey
who is also the CEO of Polaris Sports – the commercial wing of the multi-million euro operation
Mendes did sign off on the deal after Rogers conducted a number of Zoom interviews with various staff members following an initial approach from Irish-based Andy Quinn
"It's a great opportunity," said Rogers (39) who hung up his gloves in December after over 20 years in the League of Ireland
"I will be looking at football at all levels
At the minute the only show in town is going to be the League of Ireland when that's up and running and then hopefully the underage football is back soon
They (GestiFute) realise there's good players here because they have the likes of Matt on board
"You look at young players like Aaron Connolly and others around his age having an impact
My job is about profiling and identifying the players and with the connections GestiFute have
it's then about getting them in the right place to deliver their potential."
Brexit has changed the landscape of Irish underage football with players now unable to sign for UK clubs until they are 18
the common travel area agreement means Irish players do not require special permits to move to the UK once they turn 18 whereas European counterparts now need to go through a qualification process
But 16-year-old Irish players can still legally move to other EU countries with Shamrock Rovers starlet Kevin Zefi set to pave the way when he eventually joins Inter Milan
"With Irish players not needing work permits to go to the UK
"And the fact they are part of the EU and can travel anywhere in the EU to play their football
there's massive opportunities and this company has a massive network
you are throwing the net much further than that
You are trying to get players to the best environment for their talent and ability to prosper
It could be Spain or Portugal or the Netherlands
The UK is where a lot of players from Ireland tend to go; it may not necessarily be the best route
"I'll be reporting to Luis in Portugal; and I've contacts now with three or four of the others where I will be sharing my reports with them and comparing them with other guys of the same ilk in Portugal or Spain in Poland and see how the players I'm looking at compare with players in similar positions and age groups
he felt my background in the league and work with the players union (he's a former PFA Ireland chair) made me an interesting fit and he floated it with the other board members
It's a privilege to be thought of in that regard by such an impressive company."
Rogers expects he will be joined regularly by GestiFute staff from Portugal and further afield to watch prospective recruits and his brief for watching players could also bring him into their UK network
the focus will on keeping tabs on events at home with a number of players already on his radar
He feels the development of the underage national leagues from U-13 upwards is a help
in addition to the younger profile of the League of Ireland at senior level
"There is a lot to be said for the better young players in our league coming through and playing first team football and playing in full time environments," said the Meathman
who is due to help out Monaghan GAA coach Seamus 'Banty' McEnaney with his goalkeeping coaching this year
"With the financial constraints there may be in certain clubs
younger players are getting more opportunities earlier than they may have
"I personally believe that playing senior football in this country is more beneficial than playing U-18 or U-23 football in the UK but it's not a one size fits all approach
There may still be benefits to some players by going away earlier.”
