game LUZ attracts players from all over the globe.  Luz’s participants refer to “playing,” as in “I’m going over to my friend’s house to play.” As in “playing with friends.” As in being with other people limited amount of community in the game world in such places as a virtual bar where players gather but to show off their weapons and fashion—one might consider the former as accessories to the latter—some of the most notable choices to be made as one constructs an online identity You can also choose your world from a menu of alternatives None of these environments are entirely fantastic or enhanced—except that they seem much emptier than reality just a handful of other players briefly passing through at least one goal: to locate a translucent deer that wanders all the worlds The buck is a mysterious figure of great beauty and grace Strange then that most players pursue it with weapons in hand as if they aim to kill it Is it an innate human impulse or a requirement of the game And what would happen if the buck were caught and turned into a trophy seeking to reconnect with his long-estranged daughter Fa a young art gallery employee adrift in disenchantment Though Wei and Ren’s real lives touch in other ways they don’t suspect (they’re both residents of Chongquing) they meet by chance in a fantasy forest in Luz an encounter that initiates a more and less tangible partnership in their respective quests Whatever fulfillment Wei and Ren can hope for the only one that might win Fa and Sabine’s trust and love making both pairs whole. In this sense LUZ is a film about contemporary isolation alienating landscapes of the media-saturated post-industrial metropolis (represented here by Chongquing and Paris—the latter seeming quaint by comparison) but also in the virtual worlds of social media and the film’s imagined tech environment which promise community but can’t escape the chilling qualities of allowing participants to fulfill personal fantasies in a communal space without boundaries or responsibility You join the quest for the buck as the “you” you want to be but your fellow hunters only ever seem to appear at the edges of your vision armed apparitions with unknowable intentions you’re divided: your body is in a room somewhere while your eyes and mind are in fantasy insensitive as much to the pleasures as to the pain of real life This is to say that Luz is also a film about spaces What good are the wonders of the real or the virtual if they aren’t shared Lau’s film seems not to prefer one over the other focusing instead on the concept of shared experience lurid night world where Wei works is far more enticing to the eye than the virtual forest or even a real “It’s beautiful,” what she seems to be referring to is a smog-obscured downtown observed across the tracks of a noisy monorail just outside the window is developed and expressed communally in all our unbeautiful worlds.  and what is said is maybe sometimes overly obvious and what is unsaid might be better presented in subtle dialogue by its entirely capable performers Some of the film’s most challenging moments for the performers how should one also perform that kind of absence and isolation while still providing the emotional content we expect Maybe the image itself is the answer—a body insensitive to its immediate environment fun for the kids and art and culture terrain twanged-out Seattle quartet with ‘60s girl-group leanings has evolved into a deeper exploration of that decade’s sounds Although it may be a bit of a stretch to say La Luz’s recent full-length and their self-titled 2021 predecessor differ musically News of the Universe manages to incorporate some novel elements noticeably in bits like the electronic arpeggiation undergirding “Strange World.” Truth be told the ’60s influences seeping from the layers of tones and arrangements that peacock throughout the record are too numerous to catalog in anything less than the pages afforded to someone writing a grad school paper.  La Luz dares the listener to try and decode the fast-paced genre-blending roots that emerge as a byproduct of being well-schooled in rock’s past the results are often unexpected and pleasant only to give way to reserved harmonies and—I’ll say it—a trippy yet tentative wandering that meanders to places I wouldn’t have predicted The band’s vocals have come to the foreground and overtake the guitar-playing in terms of maybe what best defines La Luz now Opener Color Green is equally indebted to psychedelia following it further into the decades beyond its heyday these fellow Angelenos present songs that are more of a group effort (as opposed to the work of a singular visionary) with a collection of voices working in tandem throughout Fool’s Parade (2024) I won’t say the band’s breaking new ground as much as it’s just doing its thing—which happens to be a thing that’s been done many times But you can’t blame it for making more rock music when Campaign Cup’s ‘Sweet 16’: Who brought home the bacon One of the most exciting things about the Sundance Film Festival is having a front-row seat for the bright future of independent filmmaking While we can learn a lot about the filmmakers from the 2025 Sundance Film Festival through the art that these storytellers share with us there’s always more we can learn about them as people We decided to get to the bottom of those artistic wells with our ongoing series: Give Me the Backstory they resonate differently with me each time revealing meanings I hadn’t noticed before,” says Lau “Film is my chosen medium for expressing my search for meaning with the hope of inspiring others to create their own stories rather than live in someone else’s two parallel stories unfold across different continents until a video game featuring an elusive mystical deer hunt brings them together and technology as she explores the complexities of parent-child relationships and the blurred lines between the digital and physical world Lau discusses shaping the virtual world within LUZ filming while attempting to dodge waves in the Atlantic Ocean and learning a lesson about method acting from a 5-year-old cast member What was the biggest inspiration behind LUZ An image of a father entering a virtual reality world for the first time in search of his long-lost daughter airmailed from space into my mind one day It became the inspiration and the beginning of everything about LUZ This image entails so much — generation gap It was the first building block of the script and the core element of the entire film I hope to inspire people to search for their own inner paradise or refuge and enjoy the process of doing so The characters in LUZ come from diverse age groups designed to resonate with a wide range of audiences I hope viewers will revisit LUZ at different stages of their lives uncovering new layers of meaning embedded in the film Tell us an anecdote about casting or working with your actors I was very blessed to work with such incredible actors in this film from Isabelle Huppert and the main cast — who earned their remarkable reputations for a reason — to the youngest actress our young actress had to portray being beaten by her drunken mother I instructed the crew to be extra sensitive before rehearsing and to be ready to roll at any moment she cried out that her mother was beating her because she had failed her exam “She’s acting the scene!” It turned out she was indeed method-acting without anyone needing to explain it to her and she had us all completely fooled and wowed LUZ was shot in three drastically different cities with casts and crew from France Adapting to local cultures was both fun and fascinating from 48 hours straight of shooting in China to sit-down lunch breaks over bottles of wine in Paris One of my fondest memories from the two locations both involved swimming actors had to swim in the vast Yangtze River on a scorching hot day which made setting up complicated camera movements on the rocky riverbed a daunting task — with also a team of divers ready under the water in case of surprise currents I put on my headphones and was so mesmerized by the crisp sound of water; every splash from the actors’ strokes was beautifully recorded who pointed to a crowd of over 100 middle-aged male swimmers on the riverbank we couldn’t get them to understand what was live recording and stop coughing One swimmer came forward and suggested we buy them cigarettes claiming it to be the solution to the coughs after the production team gave out cartons of cigarettes two actresses had to act in the icy cold sea With only two sets of costumes and one chance to reset hair and makeup we had to capture the whole scene in just two takes I narrowly avoided being washed away by a big wave while filming underwater I was handed a plate of fresh oysters and almost rushed to the producer to cancel such a gourmet order I noticed our grip technician — who had a truck full of crazy gear — was happily shucking oysters and suddenly dived back into the water and swam across the sea What was a big challenge you faced while making LUZ The biggest challenge was defining the virtual reality world of LUZ: its visual style each character’s purpose and behavior within it we collaborated with various writers and advanced game companies to create a visually stunning and conceptually engaging virtual reality world filled with “wow” factors overshadowing the core story and its meanings and plot that aligned with the main narrative I struggled to fully grasp what the virtual reality world meant to the characters I was haunted by the questions: What does it mean to me as a filmmaker On the first day of shooting of the virtual reality world the actors donned their game costumes while the crew set up shots The stress of having my own questions unanswered was real along with the protagonists and a group of extras running through the forest in pursuit of an invisible deer it suddenly struck me: LUZ is about the thrill of the journey itself and realize that the end goal wasn’t what they were told or initially imagined everything clicked — for me as a filmmaker We can’t reject technology or the virtual realms in our daily lives — how we communicate with others using a virtual reality game and live broadcast as examples to show how human connections are sustained in the modern era With lifestyle technologies growing at such a rapid pace in the past decade it is only getting more difficult to differentiate what is real or is actually meaningful to us This story is a reminder that technology itself is merely a tool or an extended space; whether we gain positive or negative experiences from it depends on our own intentions and awareness LUZ fosters discussions on the importance of establishing a foundation for clarity and core values Tell us why and how you got into filmmaking I love to torture myself to dig deep within and to make things that mean something — and get a smile I might be an architect if I weren’t a filmmaker What is something that all filmmakers should keep in mind to become better cinematic storytellers What was the last thing you saw that you wish you made Drive My Car — and Chinese fried turnip cakes Which of your personal characteristics contributes most to your success as a storyteller The 46th annual News & Documentary Emmys are just around the corner Sundance Institute–supported projects have gained impressive recognition The 85th annual Peabody Awards were a special Tight end Owen Nanartowich, who normally wears No. 5, had the honor last Saturday night Will Luz make an in-person appearance on Friday when the undefeated Hawks host Oakmont “It depends on the pain,” Luz said Tuesday afternoon lying in bed wearing a red Hudson football hoodie and surrounded by seven of his well-wishing teammates in his second-floor bedroom which will be the team’s number of victories if the Hawks win this weekend “I told him last week after the win (over Maynard/AMSA the rest of the ride is for him and he already knew that “I know Logan would die to be on the field right now.”  “It feels good because I’ve been playing with these kids since second and third grade It’s nice to see how we did form a family,” he said who missed Hudson’s first two games because of an ankle injury lined up for his first game action in the second half against D-S found a hole along the right side and was taken down by two Raider defenders He sensed a major injury seconds after it happened I looked at Garrett and his mouth was wide open,” Luz said “I went to the sideline and laid down and I knew I tore something.”  five days after making a game-day visit with Giorgio to Endicott College where Logan’s brother Caleb is sophomore defensive lineman Logan wore a heavy brace on his leg that day ACL repairs consist of using a graft of replacement tissue from any number of sources: the other knee But doctors used part of his quadriceps muscle “I can’t even lift my leg if I wanted to,” he said Luz ices his knee for an hour three to four times a day and already had a physical therapy session scheduled “They want me up and running in three months,” said Luz who participated in track and field last spring he may opt for the post-graduate route “so I can actually have a senior year.”  6 was passed down to Luz from Quinn O’Brien Hudson’s starting running back in 2021 when Luz was a freshman “He was a hard hitter and he was small (5-7) too.”  O’Brien’s final season with the Hawks represented the beginning of a turnaround for the program from 3-7 in 2019 to 8-3 and a playoff win at Austin Prep two years later Luz had his eyes on O’Brien’s number for the future I asked him for it – and he said he would think about it,” Luz said so he said that was the main reason he gave me it Captain Savion Newton-Clark is next after Giorgio “It’s really cool because Logan didn’t get a year with us and I saw how hard he worked in the offseason,” Nanartowich said “It’s an honor to put that on because I know if he was out there The tributes aren’t limited to jersey sharing 6” on their back pads and a #forluzzy hashtag has been introduced “I think wearing his jersey is a powerful gesture to show that he’s still having a positive impact on our team this season,” said Hudson head coach Zac Attaway “It demonstrates the unity and support that this team has.”  The Luz home is less than a mile from Hudson High Luz’s teammates gave him – and his mother – a hug as they filed out to their cars “It sucks that I can’t play one last year with them but they’re doing stuff for me at this point,” Luz said minutes earlier Tim Dumas is a multimedia journalist for the Daily News He can be reached at tdumas@wickedlocal.com Luz Alarcon entered into the hands of her Lord on  Tuesday Visitation will be from 4:00 -
