Belal Muhammad and welterweight contender Jack Della Maddalena headline an intriguing card at UFC 315 this Saturday in Montreal. Muhammad will make his first welterweight title defense after earning the belt over Leon Edwards at UFC 304 last July
Muhammad was originally expected to face Shavkat Rakhmonov for his first title defense at UFC 310, but Muhammad withdrew due to an injury. After Rakhmonov defeated Ian Machado Garry in a short-notice booking
he suffered an injury and is sidelined from title contention indefinitely
Garry is fresh off a win over Carlos Prates at UFC Kansas City earlier this month
and his request to be the UFC 315 backup fighter was granted
But if Garry is expecting a title shot for defeating Prates and backing up UFC 315
Muhammad believes he won’t get what he covets
During a recent appearance on The Anik & Florian Podcast
Muhammad was asked what his reaction was when Garry was named the official UFC 315 backup
there’s no way this guy is about to strap up as the backup
“Is he going to make weight again and is it going to be worth it
and I know Jack’s not pulling out coming all the way from Australia…
Especially in a division now where people are saying there isn’t a clear number one contender
and then you have [Sean Brady] who looked great against Leon Edwards
he’s just trying to put his name in the mix and think he’s going to cement himself as being the backup,” Muhammad continued
“But you never know what the UFC wants…I think if Kamaru wins
Muhammad and Kamaru Usman have had a budding feud for months, and Usman is scheduled to return to the cage at UFC Atlanta next month against Joaquin Buckley
It’s his first welterweight bout since consecutive losses to Edwards
including his most recent 170 lb booking at UFC 286
Another intriguing element of the welterweight title picture is UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, who could potentially move up to welterweight if Maddalena wins at UFC 315. Makhachev and Muhammad have dismissed fighting each other after their time training together under the tutelage of Khabib Nurmagomedov
Ahead of UFC 315, the main card suffered a big loss in the form of two KO artists. Joel Alvarez withdrew on days’ notice due to an injury from his scheduled bout with Benoit Saint-Denis
and Saint-Denis’s status for the card is uncertain
Mateusz Rebecki, according to MMA Fighting
is a potential short-notice replacement opponent for Saint-Denis
the UFC hasn’t announced anything regarding Saint-Denis staying on the fight lineup
If Saint-Denis doesn’t get a short-notice replacement opponent, another top star called him out for a main event bout. Mauricio Ruffy took to social media on Saturday and implored the UFC to book him against Saint-Denis in a UFC Fight Night headliner

PITTSBURGH (AP) — San Diego's Fernando Tatis Jr
sprinted home on a wild pitch by Pittsburgh closer David Bednar in the top of the ninth inning to lift the Padres past the Pirates 2-1 at rainy PNC Park on Saturday night
who exited Friday night's win in the third inning after taking a 93 mph pitch off his left forearm
He stole third and took off when a pitch from Bednar (0-3) to Xander Bogaerts skipped in front of catcher Joey Bart
The ball squirted to Bart's right and Tatis' slide just beat Bart's lunging tag to give the Padres their fourth straight victory
Manny Machado hit his third homer of the season for San Diego
which won despite managing just three hits
Robert Suarez walked Oneil Cruz with one out in the ninth
but Bryan Reynolds lined out to Bogaerts at short and Bogaerts doubled off Cruz at first to end it as Robert picked up his 13th save
Pirates starter Bailey Falter dominated the Padres for seven innings
The left-hander limited San Diego to two hits and at one point retired 11 straight before Machado's blast over the left field wall with one out in the seventh tied the game
Cruz singled home Alexander Canario for Pittsburgh's only run
Ke'Bryan Hayes had two of the Pirates' six singles
Pittsburgh did not record an extra-base hit while losing for the sixth time in seven games
The Pirates had the bases loaded against Padres starter Randy Vasquez in the fifth only to have Canario — who came in batting .118 — strike out
Pittsburgh left 10 runners on base during Vasquez's five innings of work
Padres manager Mike Shildt is now 27-5 all-time at PNC Park

Jack Della Maddalena expects his UFC 315 title fight vs
but will be prepared to fight Ian Machado Garry if his services as the backup are required
Della Maddalena is naturally hopeful his chance to fight for the undisputed title materializes without any issues
he credits the UFC for having some insurance in case something unforeseen arises
"100 percent I would be comfortable fighting Ian Garry," Della Maddalena told MMA Junkie on Friday
"I think that's a fight that's going to happen
I've mentally prepared myself for that fight
I've had fights for through before and you're stuck in limbo and if anything happens this time
Della Maddalena thinks UFC is rewarding Machado Garry for being a company man in recent months and stepping up in some big spots
"He had a good win – Prates is a dangerous guy," Della Maddalena said
this is just their way of thanking him for stepping in on those tough fights
Not many people do that sort of thing and step in when fights fall out
Good on him and I think that's the UFC's way of repaying him
I think me and Belal now is on and I can't see anything happening with the fight between me and Belal
But if anything changes then no worries on my end."
If UFC 315 proceeds with its current main event
it remains to be seen if Machado Garry actually gets the next title shot against the winner
There are a number of legitimate candidates to fight for the belt at 170 pounds next
from Shavkat Rakhmonov to Sean Brady to possibly even the winner of Kamaru Usman vs
There's also the looming presence of lightweight champion and pound-for-pound great Islam Makhachev
who could potentially move up a weight class if Della Maddalena captures gold at UFC 315
said he is not picky when it comes to the opponent for a first potential title defense
And although there are numerous viable contenders who have done their work within the division
"It really doesn't matter what any of them think," Della Maddalena said
"It's really who just the UFC are the ones who are going to tell you who gets the next shot
the UFC can announce they are next and you wouldn't be surprised
"If Islam after the fight says he wants to step up
I don't think there would be too many complaints from people that think that's not fair
I think they've got a card in Australia coming up

Photo of Fernando Tatis Jr. reacting to taking the lead in Pittsburgh on Saturday, May 3Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn is the greatest player in Padres’ history.
But the most exciting at times is Fernando Tatis Jr.
One of those times was the ninth inning in Pittsburgh Saturday. Tatis opened the inning with a line drive to left that he turned into a double. Then he made history with a steal of third. Then he scored on a wild pitch that bounced about 10 feet away from home plate — single-handedly producing the decisive run in the Padres’ 2–1 victory.
Tatis’ steal of third was the 100th stolen base of his career. With that stolen base, Tatis became the seventh-fastest player in Major League history to reach the combination of 100 home runs and 100 stolen bases. Tatis did it in 547 games.
The only players to reach the 100/100 combination faster were Eric Davis (460 games), Darryl Strawberry (490), Ronald Acuna Jr. (511), Mike Trout (517), Alfonso Soriano (518) and Alex Rodriguez (541).
Tatis now has 135 home runs. Tatis is tied with Gwynn for sixth on the Padres’ all-time list of home run leaders and is now 11th in stolen bases.
— Teams managed by Mike Shildt are now 27–5 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh for a .844 winning percentage. That is the highest winning percentage by any manager at a single ballpark in Major League history (minimum 25 games). №2 on the list is Jim Mutrie (.813, 26–6 at Metropolitan Park).
— The Padres Sunday morning officially promoted right-hander Stephen Kolek from Triple-A El Paso to start Sunday’s series finale in Pittsburgh. To make room for Kolek on the 26-man roster, right-handed reliever David Morgan was optioned to El Paso.
— Manny Machado hit his 170th home run as a Padre Saturday. His shot at 114.3 mph also tied for the third hardest hit home run of Machado’s career. His record is 119.6 mph off the Phillies’ Matt Moore on Aug. 20, 2016.
— RHP Randy Vásquez lowered his earned run average to 3.90 Saturday, giving up 1 run on 6 hits and 5 walks with 3 strikeouts over 5 innings. The bullpen followed with four hitless, scoreless innings.
— RHP Robert Suarez picked up his Major League-leading 13th save while lowering his ERA to 0.60 and his opponents’ batting average to .102 (5-for-49). He issued his fourth walk, however, to shoot his WHIP up to 0.600.
Padres’ CF Jackson Merrill (hamstring) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored Saturday night in his first rehab start for Double-A San Antonio. Padres’ 2B Jake Cronenworth (non-displaced fractured rib) was 1-for-3 in his rehab debut in the Arizona Complex League.
Starting LH Jagger Haynes (4.74 earned run average), the Padres’ №19 prospect, gave up a run on 2 hits and a walk with 9 strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings for San Antonio. Starting RH Isaiah Lowe (1–2, 6.59), the Padres’ №10 prospect, gave up a hit and 3 walks with 5 strikeouts in 5 scoreless innings to earn the win for High Single-A Fort Wayne.
DH Kavares Tears (.283), the Padres’ №7 prospect, was 1-for-4 with a run for Single-A Lake Elsinore. C Lamar King Jr. (.284), the Padres’ №29 prospect, had an RBI double in 4 at-bats.
PH-DH Kale Fountain, the Padres’ №8 prospect, was 1-for-1 with a RBI and a walk in the Arizona Complex League. DH Kai Roberts, the Padres’ №23 prospect, was 1-for-2 with a stolen base.
Starting LH Kyle Hart gave up 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits and 5 walks with 4 strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings in his first start for Triple-A El Paso.
TRIPLE-A EL PASO (14–18) — Chihuahuas 4, OKLAHOMA CITY 2: 3B Mike Brousseau (.221) hit a solo home run in 4 at-bats. C Cody Roberts (.273) was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. DH Yonathan Perlaza (.348) had a 2-run double in 5 at-bats. RHP Reiss Knehr (3.60) pitched a perfect inning for his fifth save.
DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (13–13) — MISSIONS 4, Corpus Christi 1: 3B-1B Devin Ortiz (.315) was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run. RF Joshua Mears (.189) had a solo home run in 4 at-bats. C-2B Anthony Vilar (.232) was 2-for-4.
HIGH SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (15–11) — TIN CAPS 2, Dayton 0: LHP Harry Gustin (2.33) followed Lowe and issued a walk with 4 strikeouts in 4 hitless, scoreless innings to earn his second save. RF Jacob Campbell (.225) was 2-for-3 with a 2-run home run.
SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (10–16) — Inland Empire 6, STORM 2: CF Alex McCoy (.250) was 2-for-4 with a RBI double.
ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE PADRES (0–1) — RANGERS 4, Padres 3: SS Yimy Tovar was 2-for-4 with 2 runs.
May 4, 1977 — The Padres and Phillies complete a nine-inning game at San Diego Stadium in a franchise-record one hour and 29 minutes. The secret to the quickest game in Padres’ history are the fast-working pitchers, Randy Jones and Jim Kaat of the Phillies. Jones allows 1 run on 4 hits and a walk in a complete game as Padres win 4–1. LF Gene Richards was 2-for-5 with a homer and 3 RBIs.

All three judges scored the fight for Machado Garry via scores of 49-46

Despite Machado Garry's insistence he was never in trouble
A left hand bloodied his nose near the end of the fourth
and he started to repeatedly shoot takedowns in the fifth when it wasn't going his way on the feet
Machado Garry's fight IQ was fully on display though
as he expertly nullified Prates' offense the majority of the bout and bought time to recover from Prates' biggest shots late
Somewhat lost in the drama of the final round was Machado Garry's brilliance throughout the first four rounds
He outlanded Prates 141-64 in total strikes
He used lateral movement and the counter jab to keep Prates guessing all night on the feet and mixed in 19 takedown attempts
but the constant level changes did a lot to mitigate Prates' offense

They both land about four strikes per minute
but Machado Garry’s distance management shows in the fact that he absorbs less than three strikes from his opponent per minute
Prates has shown a propensity to mix up targets and fight on the inside if he can back his opponents up to the cage

It was a bold move, particularly when a fighter in his position might want to protect their undefeated record, but that’s not Machado Garry’s way, which makes him ideal for life in the UFC. Ideal because, instead of waiting for a top contender to give him a shot at the Top 5, Machado Garry is putting his position at risk taking on the red-hot Carlos Prates on about a month’s notice in Kansas City on April 26.
It's a wildly risky move for Machado Garry. Prates is coming off four consecutive knockout wins in his rookie campaign. The Brazilian is freshly in the rankings, meaning Machado Garry could tumble outside the Top 10 should he suffer defeat, but Machado Garry doesn’t really think like that.
Whether someone loves or hates Machado Garry, two things are true: people care about what happens to him, and he absolutely loves everything there is to love about the fight game. If you have any doubts about his potential, just listen to one of his interviews: he’ll tell you how good he believes he is.
On April 26, he gets another chance to show everyone, too.

The Irishman defeated Carlos Prates by unanimous decision in Kansas City last weekend
revealing afterwards that he had been assured he would serve as backup for this month’s welterweight title fight in Montreal between champ Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena — a position which was later confirmed by Dana White in his post-fight press conference

All three judges saw the fight for “The Future,” who put himself right back into the win column and cemented his standing as a contender in the welterweight division with this victory
This was a strong showing by both men — Machado Garry early
Prates late — and a reminder of just how competitive the welterweight division is at the moment

Zhang Mingyang sent Anthony Smith into retirement with a couple additional scars and down a bunch of blood
splitting him open with a series of elbows and putting him away with several more in the final moments of the first
Smith tried to go toe-to-toe with a menacing Chinese prospect
but just didn’t have the firepower to run with Zhang
who busted him up with sharp elbows in the clinch early in the fight
punishing the departing veteran with more elbows
forcing referee Jason Herzog to step in and halt that contest
The surging Zhang has now won each of his first three UFC appearances inside the opening round
and will find himself stationed inside the Top 15 following this one
He is unquestionably one to watch in the 205-pound ranks
and it will be interesting to see who he gets matched up with next
this marks the end of his mixed martial arts journey
as “Lionheart” announced before the bout that it would be the last of his career
The veteran was a staple in the rankings throughout his light heavyweight run
working his way to a championship opportunity against Jon Jones in 2019
He moves on to the next stage of his life having amassed a 38-22 record overall
David Onama and Giga Chikadze spent half of their 15-minute tussle swinging hammers at one another
as the two featherweights battled for a place in the featherweight Top 15
Chikadze won the first despite getting touched early in the frame after clocking Onama late in the round
Onama wrestled more in the second to draw level before the two began the third trading once again
Onama used a collision to work to top position with two minutes left in the third
The judges were called upon to determine the victor
That’s now four straight for the talented fighter from Uganda
who may have just punched his ticket to the Top 15 by turning back the veteran
Abus Magomedov and Michel Pereira went the distance in the middle of the main card
Germany-based middleweight garnering the victory
After Pereira did a dance routine coming out of the back
taking the action to the usually high-energy Brazilian
throwing and landing much more than he did in the previous frame
maintaining that into the early part of the third before Magomedov landed a couple thudding blows to put some distance between them once again
much to the chagrin of the surprisingly displeased fans in Kansas City
with Magomedov coming away on the happy side of the verdict
That’s now three straight wins for the 34-year-old middleweight
who could find himself sporting a number next to his name when the rankings update next week
Randy Brown became the first person to finish Nicolas Dalby
shattering the Dane's nose and rallying from getting clipped to punctuate a wild sequence with a right hand that halted the action in a flash
Brown used his range and slick boxing early in the contest
keeping Dalby at the end of his punches and twisting his nose into a full Arlovski with a sweeping right hook before the Danish veteran put a right hand on his temple late in the frame that sent Brown to the canvas
and when they planted their feet and began swinging mercilessly with one another just over a minute into the frame
Brown connected with a right hook amidst the chaos that caught Dalby clean and turned off his lights
“Rudeboy” has been a stalwart in the welterweight division for a number of years and for the second straight year
he’s begun his campaign with a hellacious knockout
The 34-year-old called for a date with a ranked opponent and given his tenure and this performance
such a matchup would make a great deal of sense
It took three tries for Ikram Aliskerov land opposite Andre Muniz in the Octagon
and the Russian made the absolute most of it
pounding out a first-round stoppage victory to get himself moving in the right direction again
with neither man landing anything of great substance
Aliskerov landed a left hand that wobbled Muniz
with the Brazilian having a delayed fall to the canvas
Aliskerov pounced and pounded out the finish
Aliskerov was a popular dark horse in the middleweight division last year
but lost some momentum when he accepted a short-notice
main event assignment against Robert Whittaker and suffered a first-round loss
But this was the kind of effort that should rekindle much of that enthusiasm and earn the Russian an opportunity to face someone with a number next to their name next time out

Manny ready to put injuries in rearview with healthy start to '25February 24th
I have asked him dozens of questions about various injuries
There's no player who likes talking about that stuff less
Machado will respond with some version of this: "No one is ever 100% during a baseball season." And he's not wrong
Machado tries to make it clear that every player deals with something
He seems to view that struggle as an enchanting part of baseball -- one that ought to be appreciated more
But he also views talking about those injuries -- even mentioning them -- as excuse-making
It's not just that he hasn't been 100% over the past two seasons
Machado played through agonizing pain in his right elbow for the entirety of the 2023 season. It was diagnosed as tennis elbow. That offseason, he underwent surgery
which included a recovery timetable that lasted into the '24 season
then had to manage his workload at third base
Machado began to feel better in the second half
on the day the Padres held their first full-squad workout
Machado spoke with reporters and was asked when he last felt 100%
"And then it's back to not being at 100," he said
Whatever the percentage figure on Machado's health after one week of camp
he's clearly in a better place than he was in both 2023 and '24
Which is a scary thought because Machado averaged 30 home runs with a .790 OPS across those injury-plagued seasons
In 2022, meanwhile, Machado dealt with a serious left ankle injury he sustained while stepping awkwardly on first base that June. He received constant treatment throughout the second half, but played through it and posted an .898 OPS and 6.7 bWAR while finishing second in MVP voting
but healthier -- version of Machado look like
Well, Friday looked pretty darn good. On the first pitch Machado saw this spring, he mashed a 428-foot home run halfway up the batter's eye at the Peoria Sports Complex
He saw one more pitch and sprayed a hard line drive at the right fielder
"Manny set a nice tone," said Padres manager Mike Shildt
Much has been said about Machado’s impact as a tone-setter for these Padres
It’s no coincidence that San Diego's 2024 season turned when Machado's did -- sometime around mid-June
As Machado began feeling the effects of that elbow surgery a bit less
He batted .298/.343/.560 with 23 of his 29 home runs from June 19 onward
"We all did our part," Machado said
"They all kept me healthy in there and able to go out and perform and be the best I possibly can
dealing with injuries and dealing with not being 100%."
“Had my regular offseason routine -- get ready
Obviously there’s going to be bumps and bruises
I think that’s just the beauty of baseball
I wouldn’t trade anything in the world for it.”
As though extensor tendon surgery and a debilitating high-grade ankle sprain could simply be chalked up to “bumps and bruises.”
I think that’s legitimately the way Machado views them -- or at least tries to view them
It’s part of what leads to the end result: He’s an immensely valuable player whether he’s healthy or not
but 'looks like he’s going to be fine'March 30th
SAN DIEGO -- Padres star third baseman Manny Machado exited Saturday’s 1-0 victory over the Braves with right calf tightness
but he seems to have avoided any sort of prolonged absence and could return to action for Sunday’s series finale at Petco Park
After he swung and missed at a pitch during his fourth-inning at-bat
He was evaluated by a team trainer and would remain in the game to finish the at-bat
But Machado immediately retreated to the clubhouse, and he was replaced at third base by Jose Iglesias
“Manny looks like he’s going to be fine,” manager Mike Shildt said
It got to a point where it just didn’t make any sense to stay with him
Both Shildt and Machado said it was possible Machado could play on Sunday
“I think Shildty did the right thing there
maybe keeping it from being something worse,” Machado said
Iglesias would presumably take over the starting role at third
The Padres signed Iglesias in early March after his strong season with the Mets in 2024
The 32-year-old continues a hot stretch at the plate
posting a .733 OPS with one home run and four RBI over his last seven games for the Padres
Machado is hitting .280 with three home runs and 14 RBI across 32 games this season
Back in Kansas City for the first time in a couple years
the action on Saturday night started much more quickly than it did the last time the Octagon rolled into town
Each of the first four bouts ended before the third round
highlighted by a second-round submission finish for streaking strawweight Jaqueline Amorim and a walk-off
first-round knockout win for newcomer Malcolm Wellmaker
and lightweight followed before the prelims wrapped in the flyweight division with Matt Schnell and Jimmy Flick turning in a barnburner to close things out
It was a fun opening collection of fights that set the table nicely as we ready to shift to the main card
Here’s a look at how things played out in the early slate

Matt Schnell and Jimmy Flick closed out the prelims by setting the bar to clear in the Fight of the Night race
going back-and-forth at a frenetic pace as only flyweights can do
This was the MMA equivalent of those old Looney Tunes cartoons where two characters got fighting were just shown as a ball of dust with fits and feet and battered faces occasionally popping out into the frame
scrambled and attacked each other on the ground
but throughout entertaining bout that went the full 15 minutes
When the scorecards were collected and tallied
it was the returning Schnell that emerged victorious
halting a three-fight slide and collecting the 17th win of his career
it’s a second straight setback and fourth loss in five bouts since returning to the UFC following a brief retirement

Evan Elder ran his winning streak to three in his return to his home state, getting the better of former training partner Gauge Young late in the preliminary card
Fighting for the first time in nine months
Elder looked sharp in the short-notice pairing
utilizing kicks to all ranges and some clean punches to constantly stay just a little bit ahead of the game new arrival and fellow Missouri native
All three judges scored the fight in favor of Elder
who pushed his record to 3-2 inside the Octagon with his third straight victory
The 28-year-old is a solid overall athlete and continues to impress each time out
while Young showed he has a future at this level with his performance here
Originally scheduled to face off at UFC 313, Chris Gutiérrez and John Castañeda finally shared the cage this weekend
pairing off for an entertaining clash between bantamweight stalwarts competing up a division for the evening
Gutierrez was the more effective of the two over the first two rounds
as he landed at better than 75 percent with his signature leg kicks
He dropped Castaneda with a right hand in the first
swept his legs out from under him with a kick in the second
elevating and depositing Gutierrez on the canvas midway through the round
Two of the three judges scored the fight in favour of Gutierrez
who has now earned consecutive victories and earned three wins in his last four outings
the Factory X Muay Thai representative is a rock-steady figure just outside the rankings in the 135-pound weight class
and should continue to thrive there going forward
Da'Mon Blackshear and Alatengheili were the first duo to venture into the third round at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City
battling back-and-forth for the full 15 minutes in a competitive bantamweight tussle
using his range and diverse assortment of strikes to connect at all levels and open up a lead to start
Alatengheili seemingly rallied in the second
getting inside the range of his opponent and landing with force
showing a greater urgency in the middle stanza
Both men had some positive moments in the third
while “The Mongolian Knight” continued to hunt for one-hitter quitters to put Blackshear out
That’s now three straight wins for “Da Monster,” who continued to solidify his standing as an outstanding fit in the "Second 15" of the talent-rich bantamweight ranks
Malcolm Wellmaker earned his UFC contract with a walk-off knockout on Dana White’s Contender Series and he upped the ante in his promotional debut, flatlining Cameron Saaiman on Saturday night
The bantamweights took the first 90 seconds to measure one another and find their ranges
but then as Saaiman threw a lunging lead right hook
Wellmaker countered inside with a thunderclap of a right that caught the South African clean and sent him dropping to the canvas
You’re not going to see many better finishes to kick off a UFC career than this one
Just an absolute breakout performance for the undefeated Wellmaker
who should get a chance to chase down a bigger opportunity next after a performance like this one
Jaqueline Amorim collected her fourth consecutive finish on Saturday night, stopping fellow Brazilian Polyana Viana in the second round
Amorim wasted no time putting Viana on the canvas and kept her there for the duration of the first round
advancing to mount at one point while chasing submissions and landing damage
She took her down in the center of the cage immediately to start the second
working around to the back and locking in a rear-naked choke to secure the tap
That’s three straight submissions for the former IBJJF world champion
who continues to show dominance on the canvas in the strawweight division
The American Top Team prospect has shown elite finishing instincts throughout her career and is someone to keep close tabs on in the 115-pound weight class
Third time was the charm for Timmy Cuamba, as the Las Vegas native collected his first UFC victory on Saturday, stopping Roberto Romero
showing the speed he possesses in his hands while dealing with the aggressive offense coming back his way well
He got looser with his striking in the second
believing in his weapons more and more as each shot landed before timing up a jumping knee that caught Romero on the button and sent him tumbling to the canvas
but not on contract on Season 7 of Dana White’s Contender Series
landing on the wrong side of the results in each of his first two outings
He looked sharp throughout this one and should continue to blossom as he garners more experience at this level
Joselyne Edwards opened the show in KCMO with a first-round stoppage win over Chelsea Chandler
pressuring forward and touching Chandler with long punches and hard body kicks
growing with confidence as the round ticked on
a left hand finally sent her crashing to the canvas
That’s now consecutive stoppage wins for Edwards
who advanced to 6-4 in the UFC and 14-6 overall with the win
She’s still just 29 years old and clearly has been making improvements of late
solidifying her standing as a tough out and steady fixture in the 135-pound weight class

We know Simpson's speed; he's got hops
tooRookie center fielder leaps to rob Machado of a home runApril 27th
SAN DIEGO -- Chandler Simpson knew Manny Machado put his barrel on the ball to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning
He knew the ball was going over his head and would end up somewhere near the center-field wall
and he knew he was going to have to make a play
and caught the Statcast-projected 407-foot would-be home run -- Machado’s farthest-hit ball of the season
The robbery preserved the Rays’ two-run lead at the time
The Rays went on to win, 4-1
with Simpson’s catch reminiscent of another robbery Machado fell victim to in Petco Park back in the 2017 World Baseball Classic
After the dust settled on the play and his hype died down
Simpson thought to himself: “That was like Adam Jones.”
Rays manager Kevin Cash asked him if he had ever robbed a home run before
“It was big in the moment,” Cash said of Simpson’s catch
it was big to keep it from becoming -- at the time -- a one-run game.”
the catch was even more special because it came against Machado
I’ve been watching his highlights for years,” Simpson said
“And the fact that I can make that play off him
Aside from his early “catch of the year” candidate, Simpson has been making his presence known in almost every aspect of the game for the Rays in a short amount of time. Since his debut on April 19, the Rays are 5-2. Simpson has batted .346 with a .393 OBP and a .778 OPS
“That just speaks to the maturity of him,” second baseman Brandon Lowe said of Simpson
“He’s not trying to be somebody that he isn’t
A lot of guys can do that when they get called up to the big leagues
and try to hit homers or try to do something that he’s not supposed to do
The 24-year-old, ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Rays’ No. 7 prospect
turns routine groundouts into infield singles
like the one he had in the fourth inning on Saturday when he hit a chopper up the middle and was originally called out at first before replay review revealed that Simpson actually beat Xander Bogaerts’ throw by a hair
“He just creates panic any time the ball is put in play and it’s on the ground,” Lowe said
Sign up to receive our daily Morning Lineup to stay in the know about the latest trending topics around Major League Baseball
The chaos Simpson creates isn’t just for him
who pitched six innings with one run allowed on three hits on Saturday
mentioned that when Simpson draws a walk or legs out a throw at first
things like that can stay in a pitcher’s mind
It invites the potential for more mistakes
maybe even an opportunity of a better pitch to hit for the next batter
But there was nothing more big time than that catch
So to take that away from Machado was special stuff.”
Simpson has the potential to do something special every time he steps on the field
just impact the game as much as I can,” Simpson said
UFC rising welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry reacted to the impressive victory of his former opponent
over Santiago Ponzinibbio this past Saturday
Rodriguez squared off against Ponzinibbio in a Welterweight bout at UFC Des Moines on May 3
Rodriguez delivered an impressive performance
landing sharp combination punches that dropped Ponzinibbio
prompting the referee to step in and stop the fight
The win marked Rodriguez’s second consecutive victory
A post shared by UFC (@ufc)
UFC shared a clip of the finish on Instagram
who previously scored a first-round TKO win over “D-Rod” reacted in the comment section with fire emojis
showing respect for his former opponent’s performance
Ian Machado Garry has taken back-to-back fights on short notice
he stepped in at UFC 310 to fight Shavkat Rakhmonov
where he delivered an excellent performance but came up short
marking the first defeat of his professional career
Garry earned praise for his impressive performance against a top contender like Rakhmonov
He expressed interest in facing the winner of the UFC 315 welterweight title bout between Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena
and also said he’d welcome reigning Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev if he decides to move up a weight class
“I think it’s the winner of [Belal Muhammad vs

Garry then plans to avenge himself against the undefeated Rakhmonov
“Then I want the rematch with Shavkat [Rakhmonov]
that’s the three fights that I want… I like it
right?… I think there’s an absolute possibility that that is it because I don’t think there’s anyone bigger to fight for the title in the division right now.”

Sheets (two 2Bs) impress in Padres' spring openerFebruary 22nd
-- Baseball is back (Spring Training baseball at least)
and the Padres got their Cactus League slate underway on Friday afternoon at Peoria Stadium
Here are three takeaways from their 5-2 victory over the Mariners in the spring opener:
1) A healthy MannyThis time a year ago, the Padres were easing Manny Machado into action after he’d undergone surgery to repair the extensor tendon in his right elbow
Machado spent the early part of the regular season at DH and would not play third base until late April
he launched the first pitch he saw 428 feet to straightaway center field
a two-run blast halfway up the batter’s eye at Peoria Stadium
“Manny healthy is clearly a good sign,” said Padres manager Mike Shildt
“And it’s a good sign for the first swing to get that nice easy stroke into center field for a two-run homer.”
Machado followed with a lineout to right on the first pitch of his next at-bat
and that was the end of his afternoon -- two pitches
Machado has regularly downplayed the nature of his injuries
Machado noted that -- for the first time in at least two years -- he felt 100% after an injury- and surgery-free offseason
2) Bullpen depth galoreNine San Diego pitchers combined to limit a relatively strong Mariners lineup to two hits -- and none of those nine pitchers is projected for a place on the team’s Opening Day roster
It was another reminder of the relief depth the Padres have accrued
Even if none of Friday’s pitchers are roster favorites, a handful of them are in contention for the last available bullpen spot. Among that group, No. 12 prospect Bradgley Rodriguez was particularly dominant
The hard-throwing right-hander pitched a 1-2-3 fourth inning
recording strikeouts of Mariners regulars Cal Raleigh and Mitch Garver
“I liked all the guys that came out of the 'pen,” Shildt said
Bradgley came in -- aggressive body action
3) Sheets’ strong first impressionLooking to add a bit of pop to their bench competition, the Padres added Gavin Sheets as a non-roster invitee at the beginning of camp
Sheets’ 3.000 OPS isn’t sustainable -- but thus far
he has delivered the pop the Padres were looking for
Sheets went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles on Friday -- one down the right-field line and one to the left-center-field gap
to come out and swing the bat well,” Sheets said
“Especially first day in a uniform with these guys
Sheets is squarely in the mix for one of two spots available on the Padres’ bench -- and he’s even a contender for starts at DH
He is coming off a couple of disappointing years with the White Sox
but has reached double digits in home runs in all four of his big league seasons and clearly has power
it’s merely a matter of making sure Sheets can tap into that power
“I’ve loved the work that I’ve put in here with the new coaching staff,” Sheets said
“[I’m] just getting their ideas about what they see and what they’ve seen over the past -- and the hitter I can get back to being
Coming out today and seeing it flourish in the game is always nice.”
Among the other contenders for bench spots, Oscar Gonzalez, Eguy Rosario and Mike Brosseau all doubled as well
In order to bounce back into the win column, Ian Machado Garry had to survive a late rally from Carlos Prates to get his hand raised via a unanimous decision on April 26
The victory has put the Irishman back into the title picture with Machado Garry already outlining his three-fight plan going forwards
Joaquin Buckley was in attendance at the T-Mobile Center where he had attempted to try and get close to his fellow 170-pounder before he was obstructed
Buckley wasn’t impressed by Machado Garry’s ninth win inside the Octagon where he had to dig deep in the final moments
Joaquin Buckley is set to face the returning Kamaru Usman in the main event of UFC Atlanta on June 14 in another big fight for the division
Regardless of the fact that his next outing is already booked, ‘New Mansa’ is still targeting Ian Machado Garry after the pair were matched up for UFC Tampa last December
The contest didn’t happen on that occasion due to a shuffling of the cards at 170-pounds but it’s still a fight that Buckley is actively pursuing
He clearly had the intention of sharing some form of exchange with Machado Garry hence why he was sat near the stage during the ceremonial weigh-ins that took place on April 25
After the Irishman had stepped on the scales and faced off with Carlos Prates, he made his way to the side of the stage where Buckley attempted to get near him after standing up and gesturing to ‘The Future’.
The advance of the #6-ranked contender was cut off by Machado Garry’s wife who was sat near Buckley as she beat him to the stage to pass her son to his father.
‘New Mansa’ waited just behind her but Machado Garry paid little attention to him after the potential confrontation was quickly diffused.
Buckley later shared a video of the quick interaction on his Instagram page where he commentated over it, claiming that his fellow welterweight’s wife had given him a message during the brief exchange.

Joaquin Buckley was convinced that in the final moments of this past weekend’s main event
Carlos Prates was going to pull off a remarkable comeback
The Brazilian clearly lost the first three rounds on the scorecards but after bouncing back in the fourth
he hurt Ian Machado Garry in the fifth round
‘The Nightmare’ poured on the pressure but his opponent was able to stay out of danger whilst being in survival mode as the clock ran down
Buckley posted an Instagram video of his reaction to the final moments of the fight as he got out of his seat before telling Machado Garry that he nearly threw their potential fight away

Ian Machado Garry and Carlos Prates will face off in what promises to be a captivating battle between two of the division’s rising stars
Saturday’s contest marks the second consecutive bout the Irishman has taken on short notice
after stepping in to face fellow unbeaten contender Shavkat Rakhmonov last December when Muhammad was unable to compete at UFC 310

utilizing a variety of attacks and varied targets to keep opponents wondering what’s coming next and where it’s going to land
This is an outstanding pairing that carries a great deal of significance in the 170-pound ranks
as Machado Garry is currently stationed at No
There is a great deal of jockeying for position going on in the division at the moment
with more set to happen in the coming months
so a big effort for either man will serve them well as they aim to set themselves up for an even greater opportunity in the back half of the year
The co-main event features athletes at opposite ends of their fighting careers
as Anthony Smith makes his final walk to face UFC sophomore Zhang Mingyang
Smith will step into the Octagon for the 25th and final time on Saturday

Zhang earned a call to the UFC with a first-round stoppage win in the first bout in Road to UFC history
putting away Tuco Tokkos in just under four minutes
finishing both Brendson Ribeiro and Ozzy Diaz
and arrives for his 2025 debut having won 11 straight
It’s going to be fascinating to see how Smith performs here
given that he’s already made the decision to transition into the next phase of his career following this one
He has a considerable edge in terms of skill and experience
but “The Mountain Tiger” is a proven finisher with real power
and will be aiming to earn the biggest win of his career on Saturday night
Giga Chikadze and David Onama face off in this weekend’s lone main card clash in the featherweight division
It’s been a challenging last couple years for Chikadze
as injuries and unfavorable outcomes have stalled his climb up the divisional ranks
After posting seven consecutive victories to begin his UFC tenure
the 36-year-old Georgian has gone 1-2 over the last three years
sandwiching a win over Alex Caceres between decision losses to Calvin Kattar and Arnold Allen.
UFC TO HOST FIRST-EVER EVENT IN AZERBAIJAN JUNE 21
Onama cut his teeth competing in Kansas City and the surrounding area
and enters this one on a three-fight winning streak
the 30-year-old from Uganda is 5-1 in the UFC when competing at 145-pounds
and looks to break into the Top 15 with a victory here.
This contest is a perfect illustration of the depth of talent in the featherweight ranks at the moment
as well as another potential instance where the landscape may change
Chikadze has been a fixture in the Top 15 for the last several years
but a win for Onama would vault him into the rankings and cause a chain reaction down the line
which is something we could see more of in the weeks and months ahead.
Michel Pereira and Abus Magomedov meet in one of two main card fights in the middleweight division scheduled to take place this weekend in Kansas City.
After posting three straight first-round stoppage wins following his move to the 185-pound weight class
Pereira finally ran into serious resistance last time out
landing on the business end of a one-sided drubbing at the hands of Anthony Hernandez
The Brazilian is still 9-3 overall in the UFC and 8-1 over his last nine outings
and will look to kick off his 2025 campaign by getting things moving in the right direction again

Magomedov appears to be finding his place in the middleweight ranks
having earned consecutive wins in 2024 to move to 3-2 in the UFC
He crushed Dustin Stoltzfus in his promotional debut before dropping consecutive outings to Sean Strickland and Caio Borralho
but has reset himself with a decision win over Warlley Alves and a third-round submission finish of Brunno Ferreira last time out
Will Pereira get back into the win column and defend his place in the Top 15 or will Magomedov keep rolling
earning a third straight win and potential entry into the rankings
Veteran welterweights Randy Brown and Nicolas Dalby square off this weekend in what should be a competitive

having similarly hovered just outside the rankings for much of his second stint in the UFC
The 40-year-old former Cage Warriors champion is 6-2 with one no contest verdict since returning to the Octagon
having landed on the wrong side of a debated split decision loss in a bout with Rinat Fakhretdinov in his most recent appearance.
Each of these men have been pillars of consistency and competitiveness throughout their careers and there is no reason to expect that to change going forward
This is going to be a technical battle between a pair of experienced and talent veterans
and it would not surprise me if it ends up being Fight of the Night.
The main card opens in the middleweight division
where Ikram Aliskerov and Andre Muniz will once again attempt to share the Octagon with one another.
Aliskerov went into last year as a dark horse in the 185-pound weight class after earning stoppage wins over Phil Hawes and Warlley Alves to run his record to 15-1
He jumped at the chance to face Robert Whittaker on short notice in June
Amanda Nunes Named To UFC Hall Of Fame Class Of 2025
Muniz hasn’t competed since halting a two-fight slide with a decision win over JunYong Park at the end of 2023
“Sergipano” will look to continue his push to return to the rankings by adding another win to his resume this weekend
These two were scheduled to face off twice before — first last June
where Muniz was forced out before Aliskerov tagged in to face “The Reaper,” and then again in February
when visa issues scuttled the contest for a second time
Hopefully the third time is the charm because it feels like a well-matched pairing that should tell us a great deal about where each man stands in the division

while Alatengheili aims to collect his fourth win in five starts in this preliminary card clash in the bantamweight division.

DWCS grads Malcolm Wellmaker and Cameron Saaiman square off here in what should be a fascinating clash of bantamweights looking to make a statement
The 30-year-old Wellmaker earned his place on the roster with a first-round stoppage win over Adam Bramhald last season
