New Jerusalem Theater seems more like a medieval castle than a performance space
this massive open-air theater puts its gigantic space to use for a roving portrayal of the Passion of Christ
2.2 miles of walls and 70 towers flank the outer perimeter of the New Jerusalem Theater making it by far the largest open-air theater in the entire world
The first passion play in the town took place in 1951
and was comprised only of a few family and friends playing all of the roles
when the townspeople began constructing a replica Jerusalem in a dusty region of Brejo da Madre de Deus
the play has grown to include 550 actors and 9 sets including The Upper Room
an average of 8,000 people per show from around the globe follow the actors as they move through "ancient Jerusalem," portraying every step of the Passion of Christ

The village Church of Mae de Deus, Saligao, stands unchanged like a diamond in the lush green countryside, nestled amidst paddy fields resembling a patched-up quilt in the lap of hillocks. Yet, within the heart of our village today, amid Sal trees, swaying coconut palms, and majestic centuries-old Goan villas – some well-maintained, some crumbling – one can certainly notice change.
This change has arisen due to new settlers who arrived from various parts of mainland India to better their prospects, particularly in the last twenty years. They live and work in and around our neighboring villages, becoming part of our daily lives.
New layers of culture are being added onto the fusion of our Sanskrit and European influences, resulting in our ever-evolving unique way of life.
The people of Saligao recently commemorated, with due solemnity and joy, the 150th anniversary of Mae de Deus Church on November 26, 2023, with ‘Loving God – Loving People’ as the theme.
The 150th milestone celebrations of Mae de Deus Church, Saligao, were a year-long celebration of prayer, reflection, and charitable initiatives. All these have been a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community service and its adaptation to the changing corridors of time.
The first Sunday in May marks the splendid feast of our village patroness, celebrated in the village and by expatriates around the world with a eucharistic celebration and social gathering, keeping alive our unique heritage. This year, it is being celebrated on May 5.
Looking back in time, we remember our community of forefathers together with their fiery leader Francisco Salvador Zeferino Pinto (Salu Pint), who literally moved heaven and earth to give Saligao our unique Neo-Gothic church, Nossa Senhora Mae de Deus.
This is the only church in Goa with a steeple. The height and beauty of this majestic structure symbolise how deeply the teachings of Christ are embedded in our lives. It is the pride of our village, our proud possession, a sort of memorial from our dear ancestors. While its pristine white walls are a beauty during the day, its illuminated view at night is stunning in any season! Personally, as an artist, it has always been my favourite muse!
The foundation-stone for this architecturally striking church was laid on February 7, 1867, inaugurated on November 26, 1873.
From being Madre de Deus in distant Daugim to Mae de Deus in Saligao, the miraculous and exquisite wooden statue of Mae de Deus was ceremoniously brought in a decorated boat across the Mandovi river to Betim and then in a flower-bedecked bullock-cart over the Saligao-Pilerne hill. According to traditional accounts, it was carried solemnly on the shoulders of four village people while a band struck a tune, people lining the roads kept cheering, which echoed over the hill into the village.
Every year, for nine days before the feast day, a ‘salve’ (novena) is held with recitation of the rosary and service. The first day begins with a ‘fama’ as an introduction followed by the ‘vespers’ on the ninth day.
In the old days, the famous bands that played were Bobby’s Melody Makers, Johnson and his Jolly boys from Siolim, or the local band from my ward, Merry Makers.
The vespers were special for they set the spiritual and literal mood for the feast to be celebrated the next day. The booming khon’ne (small cannons), the big gon’nals, and fogott’teo in rapid fire mode together with rockets would boom and light up the night sky! The crowd would be kept on their toes too at ground level, admiring the ‘sursurem’ or fountain sparkles, together with ‘girgirem’ or spinning ones and other decorations. Some swayed around the bandstand.
The final signature of the end of the evening would be the combo-combi (rooster/hen) fireworks. This was an odd papier-mache rooster suspended from a pole about two feet long, and when the fuse was lit, the bird would shoot out continuous sparks and blobs of light that resembled eggs, and this was fun for all as they anticipated and waited to cheer. It was time to mob the ‘bhoje’ vendor for the aroma of deep-fried pakoras was simply inviting before heading home.
This tradition still exists today except that we have a fete every evening where the talented youth of our parish, who hold much promise – shine! Their energy, vitality, generosity, vision, ambition, and positivity are so infectious as they delight the younger generations and older folks. They organise and coordinate various cultural programmes, retreats, and adoration sessions, which are well-attended and deeply immersed in traditional and modern music.
We continue to pray to the Virgin Mother of God – Mae de Deus, to whose maternal protection this Church is dedicated, for her continued blessings on our vibrant Parish and to foster fraternal unity and love among every person living here so that all with one heart may continue to work for the progress and harmony in our village.

Welcome to a special concert that is part of the Euroradio Christmas Music Day, celebrated on December 17th, in a shared broadcast marathon of seasonal concerts from 15 EBU organisations in 16 countries: Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom.
For this concert. the ensemble Avres Serva performs works by Portuguese and Italian composers from the end of the 17th century to the beginning of the 19th century at the National Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon, with soprano Mariana Castello-Branco, cellist Pedro Massarrão and organist Nuno Oliveira directing the musicians.
Policarpo José António da Silva was an important tenor, composer, keyboard player and singing teacher. He worked in Portugal at the end of the 18th century, with an important contribution to the Brotherhood of Saint Cecilia. His career as a singer at Patriarcal, Real Capela and Real Câmara de Lisboa is worth highlighting. He is the author of lamentations, songs, contra dances, chamber duets, and other pieces, as well as a cello concerto.
Domenico Gabrielli was an Italian Baroque composer and one of the first known virtuoso cellists, as well as a pioneer in writing music for the cello. He wrote several operas, as well as instrumental and vocal works. He was especially notable as the composer of some of the earliest works for solo cello (two sonatas for cello and basso continuo, a group of seven ricercari for cello, and a canon for two cellos).
