It's Dec. 27, 1968, and the Brazilian musician, visionary and activist is arrested, taken to the army headquarters of Marechal Deodoro in Rio de Janeiro and has his long hair forcibly shaven. Brazil's military dictatorship didn't like him much: He was outspokenly leftist, which generally doesn't go over with dictatorships. But the country's socialist left wing didn't like him much either because of his integration of non-nationalist influences, like rock 'n' roll, in his music. Nearly 40 years later, Veloso has cemented his status as a legend and worldwide icon, even as he produces new music. 2006's "C" met critical acclaim, including two Latin Grammy Awards, and added to an already voluminous body of work. "Ê'C,' like 'Transa,' which I recorded in 1971, is a band album," Veloso said in a recent e-mail interview. "Some of the compositions have more of a rock aspect, some could be in a Jobinian album with strings, some could be in a Bahian percussion based album. But all are performed by the same basic rock band." Currently on tour to support the album, Veloso will play the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center tonight. He recently took some time to look back on a career defined by innovation, awards, political enmity and exile. "When I was imprisoned and exiled, I got depressed," Veloso admitted. "The left-wing students and journalists were a lot more willing to censor our stuff than the authorities," he said of the political climate that led to his exile. "Still, the latter didn't understand how it could be that we were for those leftists who booed us. And they found the combination of long hair, electric instruments, strange lyrics and our presence in the anti-dictatorship demonstrations too hard to understand." Veloso's fearlessness in the face of severe political forces was matched only by his fearlessness in musical innovation. With fellow musician Gilberto Gil and artists such as Os Mutantes, he created Tropicalismo, a fusion of Brazilian pop with rock 'n' roll and other avant-garde music. "Rock was the mot scandalous aspect of Tropicalismo in the 1960s," Veloso said. "And I never gave up the subject. It's present in most albums I made in four decades." Though he's been called the Bob Dylan of Brazil, Tropicalismo's effect on Brazilian culture was probably closer to that of Elvis in America - Veloso was often censored, banned and harassed. Even while in exile, he still wrote and recorded music while soaking up English influences. "The strongest influence that British music had on us happened before we were forced to leave Brazil: The Beatles," Veloso said. "Once in London, I longed for Brazilian life and music, but I saw lots of things, from Led Zeppelin to Incredible String Band. The two things that impressed me the most were The Rolling Stones onstage and seeing Jimi Hendrix live." Veloso returned to Brazil in 1972 and continued to merge styles, taking interest in the Afro-Brazilian culture of Bahia. Though he is often credited with fusing rhythms to create new ones or reviving forgotten ones, Veloso doesn't take any special credit. Veloso would later be a major influence on David Byrne, whose work with Talking Heads borrowed heavily from rhythms found in Veloso's music, and Beck, whose 1998 album, "Mutations" features a song called "Tropicalia." With a legacy that still casts a shadow over modern music and some 50 albums to his name, it is even more incredible that Veloso seems as full of fire as ever. When asked what keeps him inspired, he responded: "The complexity of life. The difficulty of music. My irresponsibility." Persistent heavy rain since Friday 26 May caused flooding in the states of Pernambuco and Alagoas States of emergency were declared in both states over the weekend Officials say that at least 7 people have died During a visit to both affected states on 28 May President Michel Temer discussed the emergency response and promised federal support the Pernambuco state government said that two people had died in the flooding and more than 35,000 were displaced Around 2,300 evacuees were being housed in public buildings and official temporary shelters Over 33,000 had evacuated and are staying with friends or relatives Governor Paulo Câmara declared a state of emergency in 14 cities or municipalities: Belém de Maria Officials say that the levels of the Mundaú Dam stood at 40% just a few days ago Agência Pernambucana de Águas e Clima (APAC) said that some areas have recorded almost 250 mm of rain in a 24 hour period with some of the heaviest rain falling between 27 and 28 May 26 cities in Alagoas have been affected by the heavy rain All the victims died in mudslides in the districts of Jaqueira Three people are still missing after a landslide in Grotas do Santo Amaro One person was swept away by the overflowing Mundaú river in Satuba Evacuations have been carried out in Maceió It is thought that more than 4,000 families have been displaced A state of emergency has been declared in the affected areas San Miguel and Jacuípe rivers have all overflowed Rainfall totals over the last 7 days were 25% of normal annual averages and thought to be higher than the rainfall totals of the 2010 floods Major flooding devastated parts of the two states of Pernambuco and Alagoas in June 2010 At least 51 people died and 120,000 were forced to evacuate In a report just after the event, International Rivers said: “The center of the tragedy has been the Mundaú and Paraíba river basins in the states of Alagoas and Pernambuco an estimated 80% of residential housing was destroyed The report goes on to say that the flooding of 2010 was directly linked to a series of dam bursts along the two rivers and their tributaries “The dam bursts reflect a lack of adequate safeguards in the construction and maintenance of both public and private dams the latter typically for large sugarcane plantations it is estimated that there are at least 100,000 small and medium dams most of which were built with little or no regard for environmental impacts and dam safety.” The floods were also linked to the “clearing of riparian woodlands and native vegetation on steep slopes resulting in losses of water retention capacity soil erosion and sedimentation of river channels.” Flooding was also worsened by the lack of adequate urban planning in towns and cities along floodplains that are occupied by rivers during periods of unusually intense rainfall Você está usando um navegador antigo e que não tem suporte a muitas de nossas funcionalidades .
