Industrial residue is being used by AkzoNobel in Brazil as a more sustainable raw material for making paint
Nearly a third of the total residue generated during industrial effluent treatment at the Mauá plant in São Paulo goes into the manufacture of Coral Pinta Piso floor paint
As well as helping to eliminate landfill disposal
it’s also contributing to the preservation of natural resources
“This is a fantastic initiative which will play an important role in helping us achieve our ambition of 100% circular use of materials in our own operations by 2030,” says Wijnand Bruinsma
the initiative contributed to the reduction of around 272 tons of CO2 emissions – equivalent to the amount produced by nearly 400 cars over the course of a year*.”
the on-site wastewater treatment plant enables industrial residue to be reused as a more sustainable raw material for making paint
Industrial residue is the waste formed after the treatment of industrial wastewater
around 30% of the total treated residue in Mauá (which is free from sanitary or biological sewage) is used to formulate the Coral Pinta Piso line of paint
any residue not suitable for use in the product is transformed into briquettes for energy recovery
Although legislation allows the site’s liquid effluent to be treated and disposed of in a watercourse
AkzoNobel has invested in the treatment plant in recent years
which allows 100% of the treated water to be reused in processes and products
Coral Pinta Piso is suitable for areas with a high flow of people
It’s part of a segment that saw an 8.5% increase in its share of the paint market in 2024
according to recent data from ABRAFATI (the Brazilian Paint Manufacturers Association)
the product is sold in several other countries
The Mauá site uniquely sits within a large area of Brazilian rainforest known as the Tangará Reserve
the company has been restoring 70 hectares of the reserve to native woodland in an effort to safeguard the fragile ecosystem

Bongo Flava star Maua Sama has blasted media personality Mwijaku amid beating from her husband
The sassy singer thinks Mwijaku is sick and needs help following his outburst regarding her being beaten by her husband
Maua took to her Instagram story where she fiercely hit back at Mwijaku
“Wataalam wa afya ya akili msaidieni Mwijaku” wrote Maua Sama partly
She further wondered what type of a man Mwijaku is due to his incessant meddling in other peoples lives
she called on Mwijaku to come for his share of beatings in order to tame his mouth
“Mwanaume gani kila kukicha kuhangaika kufuatilia maisha ya watu
Haya njoo na wewe upigwe na upande wa khanga mpaka ukome
Mwijaku took to his social media platforms affirming that Maua Sama received a dog’s beating from her husband and needed legal aid
The source of Mwijaku’s allegations are not yet known although he seemed certain with his post which had a photo of the singer dressed in a pink off-shoulder dress
“Usiku wa leo Maua Sama kapigwa na mume wake saaana
Mwijaku further tagged Maua Sama to it opining that indeed all was not well with her relationship
“Anahitaji msaada wa kisheria @mauasama watenda haki mko wapi?” he captioned
Mwijaku’s commentary elicited mixed reactions with some sympathizing with Maua Sama while others roasted him for poking his nose in Maua’s life
We camped on the internet and sampled a few of the reactions
“Masikini mteja wangu wa cake”
“Haikuhusu kwani kakwambia umusemee”

Bumble bees found in low-quality landscapes—with a relative lack of spring flowers and quality nesting habitat—had higher levels of disease pathogens
The researchers also found the same was the case for bumble bees in areas with higher numbers of managed honey bee hives
The results of the study, which examined how a variety of environmental and landscape characteristics influence infectious disease prevalence and bee health, can be used to inform management practices to support the conservation of bee species that provide essential pollination services in natural and agricultural ecosystems
some bee losses—especially among honey bees and bumble bees—have been blamed on rising levels of novel bee pathogens
perhaps exacerbated by other factors that weaken bee immunity or resistance
“Many of the factors known to undermine bee health
such as poor nutrition or exposure to pesticides
can increase susceptibility to disease,” McNeil says
“Bees are more likely to be nutritionally deprived in landscapes with fewer and less diverse flowering plants
and poor nutrition can reduce the immune response and increase pathogen and parasite loads.”
The composition of bee communities also likely influences the incidence and loads of a particular pathogen or parasite in bee populations
associate professor of biology and entomology
She explains that the incidence of viruses and parasites in wild bumble bees was higher in the presence of honey bee colonies
which often harbor higher loads of pathogens that are transmissible to native bees
“Given all these interacting factors
disease prevalence and virulence can be challenging to predict in wild bee populations,” Hines says
“Our study is among the first to use data from a large geographic scale to evaluate the relative role of landscape features on the distribution and loads of key pathogens and parasites in wild bees.”
the researchers analyzed specimens of the common eastern bumble bee—Bombus impatiens
the most abundant bumble bee species in the region
The team collected bumble bee workers from sites across Pennsylvania during peak bumble bee abundance from late June to mid-July in 2018 and 2019
which included 38 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties
were selected to represent evenly the span of the state and to include a diversity of habitat types and land use patterns
The researchers then screened for three pathogens known to infect bees—deformed wing virus; black queen cell virus; and Vairimorpha
a microsporidian parasite—as well as for expression of a gene that regulates immunity
they correlated pathogen presence and loads with several recognized landscape-scale stressors
Their findings suggest that bumble bees collected within low-quality landscapes exhibited the highest pathogen loads
with spring floral resources and nesting habitat availability serving as the main drivers
The study also found higher loads of bumble bee pathogens where honey bee apiaries are more abundant
as well as a positive relationship between Vairimorpha loads and rainfall
and differences in pathogens by geographic region
McNeil says results of the study highlight the need to maintain and create high-quality landscapes
such as those with abundant floral and nesting resources
The findings also draw particular focus to the value of spring floral resources
which often are less emphasized in pollinator garden plantings than mid-summer forage
“Our results suggest that it may be possible to predict potential risks from pathogens and parasites based on these landscape indices
which can help inform decisions as to where habitat restoration and conservation practices should be applied,” he says
“This is particularly timely in light of widespread population declines in many insect groups
especially pollinators like bumble bees.”
The researchers hope to incorporate this information into Beescape, an online tool that allows people across the United States to evaluate their landscape quality. They encourage Pennsylvania homeowners, growers, and conservationists to read the Pennsylvania Pollinator Protection Plan
which contains a chapter on best practices for creating forage and habitat for bees in urban
The research appears in Scientific Reports

Petróleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras) has temporarily shuttered its 57,000-b/d Refinaria de Capuava (RECAP) in Mauá
to carry out nearly 4 weeks of previously scheduled maintenance
the planned turnaround will last about 25 days and include routine maintenance aimed at preserving equipment integrity
as well as works to increase the refinery’s production efficiency and environmental performance in line with Petrobras’ 2024-28+ strategic plan
The planned 160-million real ($30.7-million) turnaround event—which
will involve 1,500 direct and mostly regional contract personnel—specifically will include replacing reactors of the refinery’s hydrotreaters to ensure the units’ maximum efficiency and production qualities for very low-sulfur
low-nitrogen Diesel S-10 and Gasoline S-50
Without identifying other specific units at which refining equipment would be replaced during the maintenance period
Petrobras told investors in late-January 2024 that RECAP’s 2024 turnaround would require replacement of:
will not impact RECAP’s supply of products to the market
“Our [turnaround] planning always foresees [building up stocks ahead of] shutdowns and
we work in an integrated manner with the commercial and logistics areas to guarantee service to our customers,” Andrade said
Alongside RECAP’s supply of gasoline and diesel—which
account for about 30% of Greater São Paulo’s overall fuel consumption—the refinery also supplies products to the Grande ABC petrochemical complex in the nearby ABC region of Greater São Paulo
As part of an overall $776 million in new investments dedicated under the company’s 2024-28+ strategic plan to RefTOP—a multiyear modernization program consisting of initiatives designed to improve efficiency and operational performance of Petrobras refineries
including projects at the sites in line with the operator’s commitment to decarbonize corporate-wide operations by 2050—RECAP is also due a new crude oil boiler by 2030
according to a January presentation to investors
A definitive timeline for the boiler’s replacement has yet to be revealed

They ended up living on the street for four months until they joined an occupation
It was to be the first of many as she became an activist as well as a resident
she has spent almost half her life in the campaign for affordable housing
beaten many times and accused of crimes I didn’t commit,” she says
There have been progressive moves and then steps back to zero
Although the housing issue is usually framed in the class struggle terms of poor residents fighting against middle class gentrification
Araújo has been involved long enough to know that ideological labels and party alliances are not always a reliable guide to effectiveness
The right-wing administration of the current mayor João Doria has largely tried to undermine the city’s already weak social welfare provision and bring in more private business
But Araújo is impressed by the current housing secretary Fernando Chucre
Of all the officials I have encountered so far
showing on her mobile phone how he is willing to talk directly to the occupation movement leader even late at night
“He wants to use empty buildings for social housing
Chucre is frank about the scale of the challenge
“The problem of Brazil and São Paulo in particular is that we cannot provide enough housing for low-income families,” he says
More than 370,000 people need new homes because they live in dangerous or illegal conditions
Then there are the growing ranks of the homeless
there were 15,000 people living on the streets
Chucre estimates the number is now likely to be closer to 20,000 and is probably the worst homeless situation in the city’s history
he wants to utilise the 720 empty or under-used buildings in the central metropolitan districts
Nine (including Mauá and two other occupations) have been identified as “transition shelters” for vulnerable groups including the elderly and victims of domestic violence
the government will penalise owners of empty buildings by doubling the property rates every year the rates go unpaid
His more ambitious goal is to build 25,000 new homes by 2020 - far more than the 14,000 built under the previous administration
public-private partnerships are essential because even if he tapped every public fund available for this purpose it would only be enough for 4,000 homes per year
View image in fullscreen“There are those who are ideologically opposed to PPPs
which makes them work against the interests of low-income people because 88% of the homes we are building in the Luz district are for low-income families
He accepts that there is a risk of gentrification if the new homes are bought up by middle-class investors
he is considering social housing that remains under public ownership
“I share their concerns about gentrification
We need to guarantee more areas that are obligatory for social housing with a permanent place for low-income residents.”
a professor of urbanism at the University of São Paulo
the poor want to live there because that’s where the jobs are
the markets are trying to push them out,” she says
“Look what they did in Rio for the Olympics
They moved 6-10,000 people out to the periphery
View image in fullscreenFor her
the dynamic reflects a broader trend in Brazil
where city centres are becoming whiter and richer
she shows the discrepancy in terms of jobs (70% of which are in the central area)
which ranges from 56 in the poor fringes to almost 80 in the rich centre
referring to the problem as a result of the country’s history as the world’s biggest slaving nation
“This is why this won’t end like New York or Berlin
The historical legacy is completely different.”
We don’t have the capacity to respondKaká FerreiraWhile the political battle rages
The homeless are evident everywhere: in makeshift tents under the Jaceguai viaduct
begging on the roadside of the swanky Avenida Paulista
sprawled across the floors near the Sé cathedral and the municipal art museum
“This is the worst situation ever,” said Kaká Ferreira
the founder of Anjos da Noite (Angels of the Night)
an organisation that has distributed food and clothes to the homeless for 27 years
Among the newest arrivals is 15-year-old Daiene Costa who was sitting with her sister on the concrete pavement near the art museum
couldn’t pay the rent so we’re going to live on the street,” she said
She was pointed in the direction of a shelter
there is temporary accommodation for less than half of the 20,000 homeless
The government plans to build more shelters
but their role has changed under the current pro-business administration to be more focussed on training people to re-enter the workforce
secretary of social development and assistance
told the Guardian earlier this year that he was making arrangements with McDonald’s
Drogaria and other companies to arrange 20,000 jobs
For critics, this idea is unpractical because many homeless suffer from deep-rooted mental illness, disability or drug addiction that a few sessions of meditation are not going to help. “The idea is too simplistic,” said Luciana Temer, who was social secretary in the previous Workers Party administration. “For some it might work. But for others it will not. The government needs to face the fact that some people will need the state for their whole life.”
But those homeless people who can cope with autonomy are now looking at Occupation Mauá as an inspiration: they are organising, stressing their rights and pushing for an alternative to the government’s top-down approach. Last week, a group from the National Movement of Street Dwellers marched through São Paulo bearing banners demanding “Dignified Housing”.
São Paulo’s centre is an increasingly contested space not just for housing, but for ideas that have implications far beyond the city’s borders, according to Guilherme Boulos of the National Coordination of the Movement of Homeless Workers. He believes the occupations are a sign that public policy is failing the homeless and the marginalised.
“At this moment it is important to understand that in Brazil there is a process of resistance expressed in the occupations, which is increasing daily in the country,” he said. “In the centre, specifically, it is a very important symbolic dispute, because it is a campaign for the poor’s right to live in the most valued regions, where there are more services, more structure.”
says he agrees with the sentiment – but not with the solutions proposed by the left
Instead of grand-megaprojects that aim to transform the downtown area
he want to focus on smaller developments that can be realised in the timeframe of a single administration and within budget restraints
“We have a planning department with literally hundreds of projects
But they have all failed due a lack of time or money
I don’t believe in a big project to save the city centre
I prefer small interventions that can encourage private investment.”
the residents are enjoying the benefits of this pragmatism
though few expect the housing secretary’s relatively benign housing policy to last given the track record of past administration
The public-private partnership is not for the poor
There is still a risk that we will be expelled in the future
If the government continues with the idea of clearing out the city centre and pushing ahead with gentrification
then there will be more pressure on us to leave,” said Araújo
“We must continue our struggle and find new ways to resist.”

Maro Maua and his supporters cycling through Mombasa during the “Fit for climate justice” campaign
(LWI) – Maro Maua wanted to draw attention to the ongoing climate crisis and the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation
He found a way of combining a modern lifestyle with a climate awareness in his hometown of Mombasa
his “wake-up call for climate change” took shape as a climate duathlon
combining a cycle tour with a beach clean-up
Maua is a volunteer at the youth department of the Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a member of The Lutheran World Federation’s (LWF) delegation to the UN Climate Change Conference COP26 in Glasgow
“We are racing against time to keep global warming within the 1.5-degree goal,” Maua said
Inspired and encouraged by this international experience
Maua decided to “deliver a message of hope packaged in practical action” at the local level
The idea was to raise awareness for shifting to a “cleaner mode of transport” to reduce emissions
The beach clean-up took up the message of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) about plastic pollution in the ocean. The last session was held in Nairobi, Kenya, and had adopted a historic resolution to end plastic pollution and forge an international legally binding agreement by 2024
Partnering with the local Shanzu Duathlon and Fitness Club and the Nyali Selfhelp Group
and young people to join the “Fit for climate justice” campaign
they started off at the Mama Ngina waterfront
and to the beach area – a route of about 20 kilometers

they collected and removed “anything that did not appear ocean-natural
plastic or ropes.” The dominant pollutant was plastic
which pointed to the degree to which the world’s oceans are contaminated
“Plastic endangers marine ecosystems and significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions,” he explained

Researchers have uncovered exactly where a key plant protein forms before it causes flowers to bloom
no one has pinpointed which cells produce the small protein
The study also points to an extensive intercellular signaling system that regulates FT production
“Understanding where FT is located and how it coordinates with other flowering factors is important to breeders; it’s useful for breeders for the fine manipulation of flowering times,” says Qingguo Chen
the paper’s first author and a research associate in the lab of Robert Turgeon
the paper’s senior author and professor of plant biology at Cornell University
Flowering in many plants begins with the perception of day-length
Some plants flower in short days and others in long days
It was previously known that in Arabidopsis plants, long day-length starts a process where leaves synthesize and transmit FT in the plant’s vascular tissue, called the phloem, which carries sugars and nutrients from leaves to the rest of the plant
where it promotes the formation of flowers
with the release of FT controlled by more than 30 proteins in interacting cascades
“There’s a complicated network and you can’t unravel it until you realize what is going on with these particular cells
so the geography is very important,” says Turgeon
Because leaf veins are very small and covered by photosynthetic cells rich in green chlorophyll
identifying the FT-producing cells was difficult
Turgeon and colleagues used fluorescent proteins to identify the cells in the phloem (veins) where FT was produced
The researchers discovered that FT was also produced in the same type of companion cells in the phloem of Maryland Mammoth tobacco
it delayed flowering in both Arabidopisis and the tobacco plants
When they looked more closely at the pathways that lead to flowering
they found that killing these companion cells stopped the process downstream of FT
confirming that FT originates in these cells and that the synthesis of FT is regulated by an extensive intercellular signaling system
The findings appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
Funding for the study came from the National Science Foundation and Purdue University

The banana is the world’s most popular fruit and Tanzania is one of its largest producers
The East African country grows nearly 750,000 ha of the delicious
Banana ‘trees’ are actually shrubs that need to be replaced once they have fruited
Introducing tissue culture propagation in Tanzania Nearly all Tanzanian banana farmers use the traditional propagation method: taking shoots from a mother plant and growing them in poly bags
Now Jiffy customer Maua Mazuri is evolving the local market for young trees with banana propagation pellets from Jiffy
Maua Mazuri produces Cavendish seedlings – the most commercialized variety globally – using tissue culture propagation from the meristem
“Even 1% of the market would give us plenty of work!” laughs Jan Beukema
The tissue culture seedlings offer several advantages over poly bag-grown plants:
One main downside So why doesn’t everyone use the in-vitro tissue culture method
Most banana growers are smallholder farmers
They don’t have the financial resources to invest in it
But they can buy seedlings grown by businesses like Maua Mazuri
and large African farmers with inputs as well as digital support
so that they can build thriving banana businesses
Bananas grow best in tropical mountain ranges like these
and the area is dotted with plantations of the familiar shaggy ‘trees’
Winning customers: Social media and farm tours Tanzanian farmers tend to be conservative
so training is crucial to winning customers for the two-year-old lab
As well as regularly updating its social media accounts
Maua Mazuri approaches farmer groups through churches and the government’s District Agricultural Officers
“The farmers are used to working with large shoots and worry that our small seedlings are too fragile to be planted
They’re also very suspicious of genetic manipulation
We bring them to our demo farm to prove that we don’t use GMO and to show them what a uniform crop could look like.”
Maua Mazuri’s first trial: 7Cs offer better value Maua Mazuri was introduced to Jiffy products by MEDA Rapid Banana
a program funded by the Gates Foundation to stimulate sales of East African highland bananas
Maua Mazuri decided to run a small trial of 30,000 Jiffy Pellets
What is the best pellet for banana propagation
They decided on the 50x 60mm 7C coir pellets and 45-cavity trays
and Jiffy’s product experts in the Netherlands at the beginning of the process
When Maua Mazuri ran a total value chain cost assessment comparing polybags with the 7Cs
it found that the pellets were better valued despite the higher upfront costs
“It’s expensive here due to poor infrastructure
So the size of the Jiffy propagation pellets represents great savings
We’re also very happy that they’re organic and don’t leave plastic bags in the soil.”
Now Jan and his colleagues are in the second phase of the trial – 360,000 pellets
Maua Mazuri still uses poly bags for two-thirds of its seedlings
“We’ve found the pellets work well for orders
Once the roots have grown to a certain stage
the seedlings must be transplanted to keep doing well
We may try the larger pellets in the future.”
Like exports to other East African countries through partnerships with local nurseries
A Ugandan customer is currently trialing Mazuri seedlings grown in Jiffy-7Cs
a type of banana cultivation pellets with coir ingredients
“Kenyan farmers are prepared to invest money in innovation
so we’ll be starting there in 2022.” He adds: “Now that we’re familiar with bananas
we can start offering other tissue culture cultivars like cassava
we want what’s best for the world and for our farmers
Clean genetics and high-quality plant material are a real step forward in terms of yields," said Jan Harm

Anger is growing over the threatened expulsion of around 1,000 people from an abandoned building in Brazil’s biggest city
The São Paulo police are not known for their softly-softly approach when it comes to mass evictions
This is what about 1,000 people who have been squatting in an abandoned hotel in the city centre for a decade are facing on 22 October
and we have been hit by batons,” said Ivaneti Araújo
“It has happened to us at other occupations.”
The city government was trying to negotiate buying the building from its owners when a judge issued the eviction order
Now anger is growing over what the campaigners argue will be an unjust expulsion of a model occupation in a region that has long been afflicted by homelessness
Read more“It would be a great injustice if this eviction goes ahead,” said Emily Mulville, Cafod’s programme officer for Brazil
the lack of decent housing and basic services for a large section of the population is the most visible expression of poverty and inequality.”
the former Hotel Santos Dumont on Mauá Street had been derelict for 17 years before Araújo and other homeless activists moved in and renovated the building in 2007
they removed truckloads of garbage and rubble
transforming a filthy shell filled with pigeon excrement
dust and fleas into a functioning community of 237 families
we did joint cleaning efforts,” said Araújo
She lived in a cortiço – a Brazilian slum tenement of tiny rooms where 30 to 40 families share the same bathroom – before ending up on the street with two of her five children
Then she found one of the many activist groups of homeless people occupying empty buildings across São Paulo
These “occupations” provide homes for poorer Brazilians who work in the centre but cannot afford the rents
and are otherwise forced to live on the streets
in favelas or in cheaper areas deep in the suburbs that it can take two hours to reach by public transport

Residents in the Mauá occupation pay about £28 a month to cover maintenance costs and they share cleaning duties
drug use and alcohol abuse lead to expulsion
There are regular residents’ meetings and a small shop
“It is a real community here,” said Luzia Ramos
who shares two rooms with her three grandsons – her daughter
at 18 and worked as a cleaner before losing her job
She has lived in occupations like this one for 30 years and said she was not scared of the eviction
“It is very unjust to remove all these families,” she said
São Paulo’s historic centre was home to the city’s rich
banks and richer Paulistas moved out to higher ground
The Hotel Santos Dumont was built in 1965 to house travellers using the nearby bus station
But by 1982 the bus station had been relocated and the city centre had begun to fall into decline
Apart from its railway station serving low-income outer suburbs, a metro interchange and an art museum, the Luz area achieved notoriety as the location of Cracolândia, an open-air slum dubbed the crack capital of Brazil, where users deal and consume openly.
Read moreThe city has upped its offer but eviction could take place before the negotiations are concluded
the city has plans to deliver 25,000 homes to the poor by 2020
a small dent in a housing deficit of 830,000; but if it pays the owners of Hotel Santos Dumont what they want
“If the owners cede a little and do not want to demand an absurd value
the owners did not reply to the Observer’s questions
The Mauá community has seen off other eviction threats
