In this latest campaign we note the utilization of ELF file and Shell Script execution
which leads to the deployment of the botnet sample
This technique was already seen in 2024 when the attackers exploited the same vulnerabilities to load their malware payload on the targeted devices

the Qualys Threat Research team uncovered evidence of an ongoing live campaign for Mirai
we discovered that around 1300+ IPs were found active on this campaign
The Qualys Threat Research Team uncovered the presence of 100+ distinct sets of servers
each tasked with deciphering its activities and establishing communication with one of the compromised IPs implicated in this ongoing campaign
These servers facilitated the distribution of Mirai malware
The above-mentioned figure shows the complete details of identified command-and-control servers
with respective payload content to the final URL
Mirai malware, here dubbed as Murdoc Botnet, is a prominent malware family for *nix systems. It mainly targets vulnerable AVTECH and Huawei devices. This botnet also uses some existing exploits (CVE-2024-7029, CVE-2017-17215) to download the next-stage payloads

The payload indicates that it is targeting AVTECH cameras
we can see the embedded command line injection for the AVTECH camera
We discovered 500+ samples containing ELF files and ShellScript files
Each ShellScript is loaded onto devices such as IP cameras
the C2 server loads the new variant of Mirai botnet
We have analyzed several samples; all use the same mechanism as the infection flow

the Qualys Threat Research Team unveiled the geographical distribution of affected countries
with Malaysia occupying the foremost position

If you’re a resident of Southern California
That makes it the cheapest new car in the U.S.
with the next cheapest being the Nissan Versa Sedan at $17,190
and did we mention that Toyota is also offering $15,000 of free fuel
And that folks is the bargain of the year, albeit ‘conditional,’ because the Mirai is a rather good electric car that offers Lexus-level luxury
and excellent ride quality and performance
I say ‘conditional’ because it’s powered by hydrogen
which is hard to come by if you don’t live in the southern sections of California where the lion’s share of hydrogen stations are situated
Car and Driver reported in 2021 that “The Mirai is a handsome
but its goodness is trapped in California—and may always be.” Unfortunately that is spot on
The 5-seat Mirai costs just $17,005 after a 70% discount
Toyota seems to have the fuel aspect covered too as it’s offering customers $15,000 of free hydrogen over the next six years
a fee that if subtracted from the $17,005 means that you effectively get the car for $2,005
there were only 54 hydrogen refueling stations in the U.S
Toyota says that the Mirai XLE grade boasts a range of 402 miles and delivers 72 miles per kilogram of hydrogen
which means this fuel credit translates to over 30,000 free miles
That’s even if we factor in the fuel’s peak price of $34.55/kg which California endured last October
Electricity generated from the onboard hydrogen is channeled to a 182-hp electric motor that feels energetic around around town
especially when you consider the car weighs around 4300 lbs
So why didn’t the Mirai sell as well as Toyota had expected
Hydrogen supply disruptions have affected fuel-cell car sales in recent years in contrast to hydrogen infrastructure strengthening for commercial trucks and industry
The infrastructure issue in addition to a challenging hydrogen supply situation has contributed to poor Mirai sales
Toyota tells us that it sold just 499 Mirais in 2024
significantly down from 2,737 units in 2023
And while these models cost a little north of $50,000 and $60,000 respectively

Web infrastructure and security company Cloudflare on Tuesday said it detected and blocked a 5.6 Terabit per second (Tbps) distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack
the largest ever attack to be reported to date
The UDP protocol-based attack took place on October 29, 2024, targeting one of its customers, an unnamed internet service provider (ISP) from Eastern Asia. The activity originated from a Mirai-variant botnet
"The attack lasted only 80 seconds and originated from over 13,000 IoT devices," Cloudflare's Omer Yoachimik and Jorge Pacheco said in a report
the average unique source IP address observed per second was 5,500
with the average contribution of each IP address per second around 1 Gbps
The previous record for the largest volumetric DDoS assault was also reported by Cloudflare in October 2024
Cloudflare also revealed it blocked approximately 21.3 million DDoS attacks in 2024
and that the amount of attacks exceeding 1 Tbps grew by 1,885% quarter-over-quarter
as many as 6.9 million DDoS attacks were mitigated

The development comes as cybersecurity companies Qualys and Trend Micro revealed that offshoots of the notorious Mirai botnet malware are targeting Internet of Things (IoT) devices by exploiting known security flaws and weak credentials to use them as conduits for DDoS attacks

GreyNoise said 1,042 were engaged in exploitation and scanning
Researchers said these were primarily connected to embedded systems that are usually not involved in outbound internet communications
GreyNoise based its revised estimates in part on a May 2024 security advisory about a critical vulnerability in NVMS9000
The company said its revised estimates are based on figures for deployed hardware but conceded the actual totals could be higher

The disruption of the Flax Typhoon botnet follows another major operation by the FBI in January
when the agency led the takedown of a botnet linked to Volt Typhoon
Volt Typhoon is a state-linked threat group working to attack U.S
critical infrastructure in order to sow fear and panic in connection with a potential military action in the Asia-Pacific region
authorities warned during a congressional hearing in February
Wray said the FBI will continue to work with its partners to identify such malicious activity and bring the actions out in the open
Researchers at Microsoft in August 2023 observed Flax Typhoon targeting organizations in Taiwan and installing China Chopper malware. Microsoft researchers originally warned about malicious activities linked to Volt Typhoon in May 2023

The campaign is known to be active since at least July 2024, with over 1,370 systems infected to date
A majority of the infections have been located in Malaysia
Evidence shows that the botnet leverages known security flaws such as CVE-2017-17215 and CVE-2024-7029 to gain initial access to the Internet of Things (IoT) devices and download the next stage payload by means of a shell script
fetches the botnet malware and executes it depending on the CPU architecture
The end goal of these attacks is to weaponize the botnet for carrying out distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks
details emerged about another large-scale DDoS attack campaign targeting major Japanese corporations and banks since the end of 2024 by making use of an IoT botnet formed by exploiting vulnerabilities and weak credentials

which then connects to a command-and-control (C2) server and awaits further instructions for DDoS attacks and other purposes
it's advised to monitor suspicious processes
and network traffic spawned by the execution of any untrusted binary/scripts
It's also recommended to apply firmware updates and change the default username and password
A new report from exposure management platform Censys has revealed that there are 221 Murdoc-infected hosts concentrated in Indonesia
stating the reported number of more than 1,300 compromised devices is likely an overestimate
"They include 'truncated' hosts and pseudoservices that respond on over 100+ open ports – behavior which exceeds reasonable standards and is likely not reflective of genuine hosts," Censys added
An unpatched security flaw impacting the Edimax IC-7100 network camera is being exploited by threat actors to deliver Mirat botnet malware variants since at least May 2024
The vulnerability in question is CVE-2025-1316 (CVSS v4 score: 9.3)
a critical operating system command injection flaw that an attacker could exploit to achieve remote code execution on susceptible devices by means of a specially crafted request
Web infrastructure and security company Akamai said the earliest exploit attempt targeting the flaw dates back to May 2024, although a proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit has been publicly available since June 2023
"The exploit targets the /camera-cgi/admin/param.cgi endpoint in Edimax devices, and injects commands into the NTP_serverName option as part of the ipcamSource option of param.cgi," Akamai researchers Kyle Lefton and Larry Cashdollar said
While weaponizing the endpoint requires authentication
it has been found that the exploitation attempts are making use of default credentials (admin:1234) to obtain unauthorized access
At least two different Mirai botnet variants have been identified as exploiting the vulnerability
with one of them also incorporating anti-debugging functionality prior to running a shell script that retrieves the malware for different architectures
The end goal of these campaigns is to corral the infected devices into a network capable of orchestrating distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against targets of interest over TCP and UDP protocols
Furthermore, the botnets have been observed exploiting CVE-2024-7214, which affects TOTOLINK IoT devices, CVE-2021-36220
In an independent advisory published last week, Edimax said the CVE-2025-1316 affects legacy devices that are no longer actively supported and that it has no plans to provide a security patch since the model was discontinued over 10 years ago
users are advised to either upgrade to a newer model
or avoid exposing the device directly over the internet
and monitor access logs for any signs of unusual activity
"One of the most effective ways for cybercriminals to start assembling a botnet is to target poorly secured and outdated firmware on older devices," Akamai said
"The legacy of Mirai continues to plague organizations worldwide as the propagation of Mirai malware–based botnets shows no signs of stopping

A Mirai botnet variant has been found exploiting a newly disclosed security flaw impacting Four-Faith industrial routers since early November 2024 with the goal of conducting distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks
The botnet maintains approximately 15,000 daily active IP addresses
with the infections primarily scattered across China
Exploiting an arsenal of over 20 known security vulnerabilities and weak Telnet credentials for initial access
the malware is known to have been active since February 2024
The botnet has been dubbed "gayfemboy" in reference to the offensive term present in the source code
QiAnXin XLab said it observed the malware leveraging a zero-day vulnerability in industrial routers manufactured by China-based Four-Faith to deliver the artifacts as early as November 9
The vulnerability in question is CVE-2024-12856 (CVSS score: 7.2)
which refers to an operating system (OS) command injection bug affecting router models F3x24 and F3x36 by taking advantage of unchanged default credentials
Late last month, VulnCheck told The Hacker News that the vulnerability has been exploited in the wild to drop reverse shells and a Mirai-like payload on compromised devices
Some of the other security flaws exploited by the botnet to extend its reach and scale include CVE-2013-3307
the malware attempts to hide malicious processes and implements a Mirai-based command format to scan for vulnerable devices
and launch DDoS attacks against targets of interest
DDoS attacks leveraging the botnet have targeted hundreds of different entities on a daily basis
with the activity scaling a new peak in October and November 2024
The disclosure comes weeks after Juniper Networks warned that Session Smart Router (SSR) products with default passwords are being targeted by malicious actors to drop the Mirai botnet malware
Akamai has also revealed Mirai malware infections that weaponize a remote code execution flaw in DigiEver DVRs
"DDoS has become one of the most common and destructive forms of cyber attacks," XLab researchers said
and it can employ continuously evolving strategies and techniques to conduct precise strikes against various industries and systems
posing a significant threat to enterprises
The development also comes as threat actors are leveraging susceptible and misconfigured PHP servers (e.g., CVE-2024-4577) to deploy a cryptocurrency miner called PacketCrypt

One of the Toyota Mirai FCEV’s (fuel-cell electric vehicle) biggest problems is the lack of fueling infrastructure. As a result, the car, despite incentives, has performed miserably in terms of sales, with only 17 cars sold in January 2025
While Toyota Japan and Toyota USA have struggled in lobbying to get hydrogen fuel infrastructure in place by hitting up the taxpayer
Toyoda Siam took a completely different approach of problem-solving
versus being a bunch of whiney babies lobbying governments worldwide to sell more fossil-fuels-based ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles
With a newly commissioned, NACS-capable site built in Sakon Nakhon Thailand at the town’s Vietnam-era military airfield that has dual-purpose commercial passenger service once or twice per day
Khun Billy’s engineering team was able to augment the site with the necessary equipment that enabled fueling of their FCEV
consisting of the water tank seen in Figure 1
Tesla allegedly agreed to TSL’s sorta-truth and a large distilled-water tank was installed near the charging pedestals
The next step in prototyping the system was to procure plans for a set of “HHO hydrogen generators” (these are actually electrolyzers) to be built

Each “cell” was capable of producing 1 liter of hydrogen every 1.8 minutes at STP (standard temperature and pressure)
with an electrical power input of 13 V at 10 A
The Mirai fuel tank stores 5 kg (55,000 liters at STP) of hydrogen
so 1,600 cells would be needed to provide sufficient hydrogen during one hour of fueling
TSL’s researchers created a hydrolyzer (HHO generator) pack
comprised of a “box” array of 22.5 × 16 × 4 HHO cells
with the HHO “pack” dimensions being approximately 225 × 160 × 40 cm (~88.5 × 63 × 15.7480135 in.)
The pack “box” would be arranged as 40s40p
requiring 520 V at 400 A (208 kW) from the supercharger to fill an empty tank inside one hour
With BEV charging times spec’d at 20% to 80%
this meant that only a 60% fill would be needed
requiring only 36 minutes for a 20/80 charge
or lowering the minimum Supercharger output requirement to 520 V at 240 A (125 kW) for a one hour 20/80 charge for compatibility with older installations
To avoid carrying excess weight, and to avoid lithium’s highly reactive hatred for water
TSL’s researchers substituted the heavy stainless-steel plates used in YouTube and Etsy HHO generators with lithium plates that were passivated with gold via a CVD process in an abandoned semiconductor fab
Further consideration for weight meant that the distilled water needed as a feedstock would not be carried in the Mirai
but would rather use an onsite tank of distilled water—hence
the “fire extinguisher” water tank in close proximity to the Tesla chargers
A simple garden hose quick-connect was added inside the charge-port door
“reserve” distilled water tank onboard
which would permit range extension at Supercharger sites that were not equipped with distilled-water tanks
Another problem faced by the team concerned the high-pressure storage needed for the hydrogen fuel tank
since the HHO generators produced hydrogen at atmospheric pressures

But while the Mirai itself was designed to turn heads for its innovation
a lawsuit means it's now making headlines in the courtroom instead of the showroom
what is the lawsuit against the Toyota Mirai about
The lawsuit alleges that Toyota and partner First Element Inc
have monopolized the hydrogen fuel market and misrepresented the environmental impact of the Mirai
The suit was filed in California by a group of Toyota Mirai owners and lessees in July 2024
Toyota isn't actually making clean hydrogen for use in the Mirai and is even keeping the fuel from reaching consumers
The suit also alleges the Mirai pollutes the environment more than gas-powered cars and accuses Toyota of violating several acts: The Sherman Act
which prohibits monopolies; the Cartwright Act
which promotes fair competition; and the Magnuson-Moss Act
The plaintiffs want a trial by jury and are seeking damages
Several class action lawsuits have been brought against Toyota over the past few years for everything from engine defects in the Tundra to the Highland's rear liftgate issues
Joining this list is the lawsuit over the hydrogen-powered Mirai
which allegedly isn't as clean as it claims
But what else does this lawsuit say about the car itself
The Toyota Mirai doesn't perform in terms of range, getting far less than the advertised 357 miles for the top-of-the-line Mirai Limited and 402 miles for the XLE versions
The real numbers are reportedly around 257 and 302 miles
Drivers claim that the car isn't great as a daily driver
Then there's the dramatic price increase of hydrogen fuel, which jumped from $13 per kilogram in 2022 to around $36 per kilogram just two years later. The plaintiffs claim that all of these problems together have drastically affected the Mirai's resale value, which dips below 20% after only five years on the road
Juniper Networks is warning that Session Smart Router (SSR) products with default passwords are being targeted as part of a malicious campaign that deploys the Mirai botnet malware
The company said it's issuing the advisory after "several customers" reported anomalous behavior on their Session Smart Network (SSN) platforms on December 11
"These systems have been infected with the Mirai malware and were subsequently used as a DDoS attack source to other devices accessible by their network," it said
"The impacted systems were all using default passwords."

which has had its source code leaked in 2016
has spawned several variants over the years
The malware is capable of scanning for known vulnerabilities as well as default credentials to infiltrate devices and enlist them into a botnet for mounting distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks
organizations are recommended to change their passwords with immediate effect to strong
periodically audit access logs for signs of suspicious activity
use firewalls to block unauthorized access
Some of the indicators associated with Mirai attacks include unusual port scanning
frequent SSH login attempts indicating brute-force attacks
increased outbound traffic volume to unexpected IP addresses
and connections from known malicious IP addresses
the only certain way of stopping the threat is by reimaging the system as it cannot be determined exactly what might have been changed or obtained from the device," the company said
The development comes as the AhnLab Security Intelligence Center (ASEC) revealed that poorly managed Linux servers
particularly publicly exposed SSH services
are being targeted by a previously undocumented DDoS malware family dubbed cShell
"cShell is developed in the Go language and is characterized by exploiting Linux tools called screen and hping3 to perform DDoS attacks," ASEC said
In a new report published on December 19, 2024, Akamai revealed that a remote code execution vulnerability in DigiEver DS-2105 Pro DVRs (no CVE) is being exploited by attackers to spread a variant of the Mirai botnet dubbed "Hail Cock" since at least October 2024
The botnet is estimated to have been active a month prior to the activity
The vulnerability in question has been described as a post-auth arbitrary file write that works in combination with DVRs that have weak passwords
The malware installed on the devices subsequently proceeds to carry out Telnet and SSH brute-force attacks to broaden the size of the botnet
Akamai told The Hacker News that it has not heard from the vendor yet to know if the DigiEver vulnerability has been patched
the campaign has been observed targeting other known vulnerabilities -
"Cybercriminals have consistently leveraged the legacy of the Mirai malware to perpetuate botnet campaigns for years, and the new Hail Cock botnet is no exception," Akamai researchers Kyle Lefton, Daniel Messing, and Larry Cashdollar said
"One of the easiest methods for threat actors to compromise new hosts is to target outdated firmware or retired hardware."
Hardware manufacturers do not always issue patches for retired devices
and the manufacturer itself may sometimes be defunct."

It was a better experience than the iPod and the Zune software was much better than iTunes as well
But as Microsoft did with Windows Phone they got into the game too late…

What this means is you need to store 4 times as many gallons of hydrogen than gasoline to get the same amount of energy

but we had to haul that boulder of a TV out of a DC area townhouse

A group of Mirai drivers from California has filed a class-action suit against Toyota
They accuse the Japanese company of misleading them about the usability of fuel cell vehicles in everyday life
The drivers say that Toyota’s claims that “refuelling the Mirai is seamless” and “comparable to refuelling with gasoline” are not true
The number of hydrogen refuelling stations is scarce
making fuel cell cars “unusable” for many drivers
the cost of hydrogen nearly tripled in the last two years in the US
going from $13/kg in 2022 to about $36/kg in 2024
the drivers claim that refuelling their FCEV takes hours – that is
if they can find a working filling station
The owners claim that the Mirai’s realistic range is consistently 100 miles (or 160 km) shorter than what Toyota promised
That is also part of the class action lawsuit against the automaker
it sells for less than 20 per cent of its initial price
In the US, the Toyota Mirai is already sold exclusively in California because the Golden State at least has some refuelling stations. But there are less and less. In February
Shell announced that it is closing all its hydrogen refilling stations for cars in California with immediate effect
and Honda Clarity Fuel Cell drivers with seven fewer stations (out of 55)
While California is one of the few markets for hydrogen-powered vehicles
only 3,143 were registered in 2023 — less than 1% of battery-electric cars in the same period
