They fell in love and somehow convinced my grandparents to allow them to marry
But the story of the Swahili coast has always been one of movement and exchange

The Elephant
As gentrification takes hold in Mombasa, many families are being dispossessed to make way for commercial or luxury projects. But the stakes are not just about land but about preserving the spirit of a city that has stood for centuries as a symbol of Swahili culture.
The clash between progress and cultural heritage often results in painful outcomes, particularly the loss of family land and historical homes. The question remains: At what cost are we changing our city? Are we sacrificing the very things that make Mombasa unique in the pursuit of “modern” progress?
Mombasa stands as a prime example of the conflict between modernisation and heritage. As the transformation takes place, I can’t fail to notice the constant hum of construction around me, “the sound of modernity”, so to speak. Everywhere I walk in Mombasa, I hear the clattering of concrete mixers, the pounding of hammers on steel and the heavy thud of trucks unloading sand and cement. But beneath this symphony of progress, there is another sound – the sound of dispossession.
The transformation of Mombasa is not just a clash between modernity and heritage; it is a deeper clash of values. It pits those who fail to respect and treasure the rich cultural heritage of the Swahili community against those driven by the pursuit of profit at the expense of people.
Unfortunately, these injustices have been compounded by legal frameworks that have historically deprived many of our poor fathers and grandfathers of their land rights. For generations, local communities – often unaware of their legal entitlements or the complexities of land transactions – have become vulnerable to exploitation further entrenching the cycle of dispossession and deepening the historical inequalities in land ownership.
One of the key aspects often overlooked in these land transactions is that, for many families in Mombasa, land is not just an economic asset but an anchor of identity, heritage and livelihood. Losing ancestral land severs ties to history, culture and community. Unlike the elites who view land as a means of wealth accumulation, Swahili communities see it as a way of life.
The solution also lies in empowering communities and educating them on their rights. With inclusive planning and equitable policies, we can ensure that Mombasa’s future reflects its rich past while offering opportunities for all. Without stronger regulations, more inclusive urban planning and greater support for vulnerable communities, the cycle of land dispossession will continue and will further displace and disenfranchise those who are least equipped to fight back.

Raymond Omollo has called for collective efforts by security teams
and religious and political leaders in the fight against drugs and substance abuse along the Mombasa–Nairobi highway
Omollo said there is a lot of drug trafficking targeting the youth along the major road
and it is time for the relevant authorities and other stakeholders to move with speed and eradicate the menace completely
The PS was speaking during the commemoration of the Chiefs Climate Action Day at Athi River Primary School in Mavoko Sub-county
where a tree-planting exercise was spearheaded by local chiefs together with school children
aimed at combating the impact of climate change
normally led by the respective area chiefs
has become a monthly national campaign conducted every first Friday of the month across all locations in the country
Omollo called upon parents and teachers to work together and ensure they know the company their children keep
Teachers should also remain on high alert to note any slight changes in behaviour or a drop in class performance
“Parents and teachers should at all times keep the children away from unwarranted distractions and temptations that may interfere with their education,” he said
the PS condemned individuals who take advantage of the country’s unemployed youth to hook them into drugs and other criminal activities
thus causing the loss of a whole generation of Kenyans who can no longer achieve their full potential
“It would not be acceptable for us to sit down and watch a few individuals mislead our children
Let parents and teachers take full responsibility and ensure the children are only focused on education for posterity,” he added
Omollo pointed out that involving children in noble activities like tree planting is the surest way of addressing climate change action by promoting environmental awareness and instilling a sense of responsibility
The PS added that this particular tree-planting exercise aimed at improving the prevailing environment and atmosphere in Mavoko and the larger Machakos in the coming years by championing grassroots-driven climate action
“We want to come back here after five years and find a tree forest in Athi River that will
help in conserving the environment,” reiterated the PS
disclosed that in a bid to achieve the presidential directive of planting 15 billion trees countrywide by 2032
Machakos County has so far planted over 2.8 million trees
“We are well on course toward achieving our target of three million trees

DIB Bank Kenya (DIBBK), a wholly owned subsidiary of Dubai Islamic Bank PJSC—the largest Islamic bank in the UAE—has officially opened a new branch in Nyali, Mombasa, marking the bank’s eighth branch in the country.
The new location, which increases its Mombasa footprint to three branches, is DIBBK’s latest addition within a week, following the successful launch of its South C branch in Nairobi. This expansion aligns with the bank’s strategic growth plan to facilitate businesses and meet the rising demand for Shariah-compliant financial solutions.
The opening of the Nyali location is a direct response to customers’ calls for greater convenience in the bank’s products and services. This branch joins the existing Moi Avenue and Bondeni branches, further strengthening DIBBK’s presence in Mombasa.
“We are excited about our move to Nyali. As a high-traffic area, we are poised to serve our existing and potential clients better and strengthen our market presence,” said Ms Mary Kanuku, Ag. CEO/Managing Director of DIB Bank Kenya.
As part of its expansion strategy, DIB Bank Kenya (DIBBK) celebrates this milestone as a reaffirmation of its commitment to delivering accessible Shariah-compliant financial solutions.
This achievement highlights the rising demand for ethical banking in Kenya and positions DIBBK as a key enabler of inclusive, value-driven financial services in the region.
“The new branch, which is conveniently located in Nyali, brings us closer to our fast-growing customer base,” explained DIB Board of Directors member Dr Steve Mainda. “We will continue to invest in carefully chosen locations, meet the growing demand for our services and products, and grow the business.”
The chief guest, Mr. Mohamed Osman Ali, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Tourism, Culture, and Trade in Mombasa County, welcomed DIB Bank Kenya’s increasing presence in the coastal city: “County 001 continues to
facilitate favourable investment opportunities. I congratulate you on this milestone achievement.” Dr Mbwarali Kame, PhD, CECM for Education and VTC, Mombasa County, also attended the launch among other guests.
Currently, DIB Bank Kenya, which successfully entered the Kenyan market in 2017, now has eight strategic locations across Nairobi and Mombasa.
DIB Bank Kenya Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Dubai Islamic Bank PJSC. The bank, which was licensed and began operations in 2017, is a fully-fledged commercial bank that offers exclusively Sharia-compliant banking services to both business and personal customer segments.
It was the first commercial Islamic bank to be established in the world in 1975 and is a public joint-stock company listed on the Dubai Financial Market (PJSC).

South Sudan traders are protesting a directive to pay duty at the port entry in dollars instead of South Sudan pounds
saying it increases the cost of doing business
Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association (Kifwa) chairman Roy Mwanthi told The EastAfrican that pharmaceuticals
food and other goods are stuck in thousands of containers and vehicles in Kenya due to the standoff
Mr Mwanthi said goods cleared as far back as November 20 have not moved out of the port due to the directive issued by South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) that duty and taxes be cleared before the cargo is released from Mombasa
He said the refusal by the importers to pay taxes has caused congestion at the port and container freight stations.“The traders want to be allowed to pay at the Nimule border in South Sudanese pounds,” Mr Mwanthi said
clearing and forwarding agents say they face high charges and are even threatening to stop handling South Sudanese cargo.“We have received invoices from the Kenya Revenue Authorities (KRA) to pay custom warehouse rent and other charges from government and private agencies due to delay in movement of the cargo
Thousands of containers are incurring storage charges
overnight charges for trucks and other demurrage charges as a result of delay in return of containers,” Mr Mwanthi said
Mombasa Kifwa branch chairman Leonard Njiru said the practice is against the East African Community Customs Management Act (EACCMA) 2004
which only allows for use of bond or payment of duty for transit goods.“We wonder who will pay for the demurrages,” he said
Clearing agents are threatening to stop handling South Sudan cargo until SSRA writes to shipping lines
agents and CFSs to grant a waiver of demurrage for all containers that arrived since November 20
2024 until normal cargo movement is restored
costs as a result of the delays -- which is not their fault -- is waived before handling any South Sudan-destined cargo in 2025,” Mr Njiru said

The United States Infrastructure Investment firm
has announced plans to begin the construction of the Nairobi-Mombasa expressway next year
who clarified that the construction of the 440-kilometre highway would commence in the first quarter of 2026
McCarter revealed that Everstrong Capital was planning to submit a formal feasibility study in May this year for approval by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA)
"Update on delivery: submitting feasibility study in May
looking for on-time approval from Kenha & PPP
financial close by end of year and construction beginning Q1 2026," McCarter announced
The former US Ambassador to Kenya gave the update hours after meeting former Prime Minister Raila Odinga
in which the two leaders discussed the need for proper infrastructure in Africa
the duo also discussed the positive economic impact the Nairobi-Mombasa expressway would have on Kenyans and the wider region
The announcement comes about two months after Everstrong Capital and CPF Capital & Advisory Limited officially signed a project agreement to raise Ksh129 billion for the construction of the highway
The road which connects Kenya's largest cities aims to enhance the country’s transport sector and improve regional connectivity
the road project aims to revolutionise Kenya’s transportation network
positioning the country as a key player in the East African wealth corridor by enhancing connectivity and boosting economic growth
It is expected to be the largest toll road in Africa and focuses on sustainability
electric vehicle charging and renewable energy infrastructure.
The construction of the highway is also expected to reduce the travel time between the two cities to at most 4 hours from the usual 10 to 12 hours
The announcement for the construction of the highway was first made in May last year during President William Ruto's state visit to the United States
Everstrong Capital signed the Project Development Agreement (PDA) with KeNHA officials in Ruto and Biden's presence
authorising the full development rights to Everstrong Capital and its partners
The construction of the highway was initially suspended in 2019 after Kenya hit its debt ceiling
forcing the Kenyan government to seek alternative methods of construction through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP)
A group of angry Gen Zs on Friday
stormed the county Parliament of Mombasa demanding answers over the delayed release of the Mombasa county budget for the upcoming 2025/2026 Financial Year
Footage obtained by Kenyans.co.ke showed the youths, joined by activists with some having the Kenyan flag tied on their necks, confronting county officials over the lack of transparency and lack of sufficient public participation in the process of coming up with the county’s budget worth billions
the Gen Zs criticised Members of County Assembly (MCAs)
accusing them of excluding young people from the decision-making process and citing the MCAs’ inefficiencies as the root cause of many of the county's problems
“We had to take things into our own hands and bring ourselves here
What we want immediately addressed is the delayed release of the county budget in 2025/2026
We wonder why it is not yet out and yet our basic needs are covered in this budget,” one of the Gen Zs posited
hospitals do not work when there is a budget
Doctors will strike and there will be a shortage of medicines,” she further averred
The youths proceeded to present their demands to the Clerk of the County Assembly
who promised a prompt response to their concerns
So we will go and deliberate this on Monday (May 5)
you can come back with three representatives and we can give you an informed response,” Clerk Juma assured
the unbowed youths vowed to return to the chambers if their demands were not met
Mombasa County's approved budget stands at Ksh16.25 billion
reflecting an 11 per cent increase from the previous year’s allocation
The county budgeting process in Kenya is a structured and participatory cycle guided by law
It begins with the development of key planning documents such as the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) and the Annual Development Plan (ADP)
which set out long-term and annual priorities
The County Treasury then prepares the County Fiscal Strategy Paper (CFSP) by February
outlining budget ceilings and proposed spending
allowing citizens and stakeholders to give their input
detailed budget estimates are submitted to the County Assembly
and approves them by 30 June through the Appropriation Bill
with regular monitoring and reporting to ensure transparency and accountability

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced that there will be traffic disruptions on a section of Nairobi-bound lanes at a section of Mombasa Road on Sunday and Monday due to maintenance
In a statement on Wednesday, April 30, KeNHA Director General Kungu Ndungu said that the lanes that are at the Mombasa road (A8) near Katani Road Junction will experience traffic disruption on Sunday
the authority will be installing the remaining fabricated footbridge beams in the section
Motorists have been urged to adhere to the directives that will be given by the traffic marshals who will be present on site
"The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that a section of Mombasa Road (A8) near Katani Road Junction will experience traffic disruption along the Nairobi-bound lanes from Saturday
"This is to allow for the installation of the remaining fabricated footbridge beams
KeNHA advises motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan below and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site," he added
The announcement comes hours after the authority also warned of a traffic disruption on the Nakuru-Kampi ya Moto (B17) Road
after a huge sinkhole emerged on Wednesday Morning
which was formed after a heavy downpour in the area
prompted motorists to seek alternative routes after the local authorities barricaded the road
While some witnesses speculated that the sinkhole was caused by the ongoing heavy downpour the country is currently experiencing

the digital infrastructure business arm of MTN Group
announced on Tuesday the completion of a terrestrial fibre network connecting Mombasa to Uganda via the border cities of Malaba and Busia
The fibre network will interconnect into Uganda via Malaba and Busia for onward connectivity to Rwanda
South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
which will boost reliability in the region
said Bayobab Kenya’s managing director Sylvia Anampiu in a statement
we aim to create a seamless pathway to Uganda

The company said the fibre network follows Kenya Railway’s metre gauge railway line route spanning over 1,000 kilometres on the Kenyan side
which Bayobab says creates an opportunity for towns along the route to be connected to the internet
It also enables ISPs looking at expanding or boosting connectivity in the areas along the route to leverage Bayobab Kenya’s open access fibre infrastructure as a high-capacity backbone
The new route is part of Bayobab Kenya’s National Long-Distance fibre project, the first phase of which was launched in 2022, running from Mombasa to Malaba along the Kenya Pipeline route. It is also part of Project East2West
which was launched last year with the aim of building a terrestrial fibre optic cable network connecting the eastern shores of Africa to those on the continent’s west
"Our strategic investment in Kenya’s segment of the East2West Fibre Project underscores our dedication to pushing the boundaries of telecommunications infrastructure through our Ambition 2025 of building 135,000 km of proprietary fibre across Africa,” Anampiu said
