"The best thing for residents to do is call animal control
so proper rescue measures are taken," HCSO Sergeant Longoria said
Deputies and a relative provided medical aid to her until EMS arrived. She was transported to a hospital, where she died of her injuries. HCSO investigators spoke to the victim's brother, who said his sister had gone outside to feed the dogs when he heard her screaming
He went outside and saw two of their dogs attacking her
He shot and killed one of the dogs with a shotgun
Animal control secured the second dog involved

and the death of a 3-year old girl in 2006
who was killed by a family pit bull and rottweiler in Hargill

These deaths are always sad and inexcusable
Who keeps dogs intent on killing their owners
Those who breed pitbulls seem not to care about their dangerous dogs
but I’m always relieved the victim is not a child or an innocent person who doesn’t own one of these maulers
The pit pushers can add that feeding your pits could be a “trigger.” Maybe this poor soul parted her hair on the wrong side of her head that day
however they’re always making excuses
It seems that nothing will get through to these folks
if a family member is killed they MAY see the light
The only good thing about this story is at least one of these monsters was put down
“Maybe this poor soul parted her hair on the wrong side of her head that day.”
In San Francisco a neighbor’s pit bull once attacked a man in his own yard and the hearing officer who presided over the case opined in his decision that the dog may have been provoked by the fact that the man was wearing a black hoodie
I’m happy to say that that hearing officer is long gone—but
Were they her dogs or were they her brother’s
How long did they have them and where did they come from
I’m not sure it even matters… I want to make some sense of these senseless deaths
Whether they were hers or his doesn’t matter
Most breeds don’t kill family members
Stable temperament dogs don’t need to be trained to not become violent resource guarders
The “dog trainer” in the article is ignorant of modern dog training protocol by advising to put your hands in the dog’s bowl and to “show them who’s boss”
it’s lost popularity these days but any that’s been starved before will eat
eat throw up–then revert to eating a normal amount of kibble and they’ll have zero interest in guarding it
Taking the dog’s dish or sticking your hands in it just tells the dog “I am a thief.” and if you punish the dog
Nothing wrong with holding a full dish and waiting for the dog to calm before feeding
Bad protocols include hyping the dog up (ooo lookee here
yay dinner is here blah blah) before feeding
Funny how the old stuff like “do not play tug with a dog” and “don’t let kids/outsiders hand feed your dog” and “don’t allow mooching” turn out to be common sense
it’s usually a bit or growling–most dogs don’t *kill* the hand that feeds them
Dogs are natural scavengers so that’s a mentally deficiency
Strain at the leash to find some way to justify a pit bull killing its owner
Always something “triggers” the poor innocent little nanny dogs
Why didn’t one of the non pit strays kill her instead
One barking dog is more than enough to ruin an entire neighborhood
says she was attacked by 2 dogs but now the story is ” only one of the dogs was involved in the lethal attack — the dog her brother shot and killed at the scene”
So the other dog has been captured and more than likely will get sold
Personally I think her brother was on to something
shame he waited until one (or 2) of the dogs killed his sister
Couldn’t care less about freeroaming dogs
They seem to think they’re pit bull social workers
If stray pits started showing up dead with GSWs I bet the same agency that doesn’t have enough manpower to answer the phone would show up 100’s strong with helicopters going door to door until the monster that was violating the civil rights of those poor
pitiful pitties was brought to “justice”
loose wolfdog
loose dobermans
Typical articles about bad neighbors allowing their dogs to run wild and being surprised when one is shot
US media currently sides with the irresponsible owners and there are no comments sections
They seem to think there should be a law requiring everyone to be as enamored with their roaming dogs as they are
Newspapers many ,many years ago used to pay attention to words and their definitions
The first definition of murdered I found was : Unlawful killing of a human with malice aforethought
I am surprised the local DA didn’t get CSIs involved to catch the evil “dog murderer”
Of course the man who shot the dog is a “coward” because he didn’t reveal his name so the internet could attack him
Fools like that dog owner are why it pays to shoot shovel and shut up

2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Brazilian Rare Earths Limited (ASX:BRE / OTCQX: BRELY) (‘BRE’) is pleased to provide its quarterly report for the period ended 31 December 2024
Record Exploration Success Continues at Monte Alto
District-Scale Growth Potential at Monte Alto
Outstanding Mineralogy and Metallurgy Results
The detailed quarterly report can be found here
Authorities identified the woman killed by one of her dogs in Monte Alto
deputies with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 22000 block of Jesus Flores Road Friday at around 6 p.m
where they found a woman bleeding from her neck and the left side of her head
PREVIOUS STORY: Monte Alto woman dead following dog attack
the woman was identified as 85-year-old Geronima Florez
She died in the hospital following the attack.
Florez was attacked by one of her dogs — a black pitbull mix breed — as she was feeding it
the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office said
The sheriff’s office previously said two dogs were involved in the attack
and one of the dogs was shot and killed by the victim's brother
the sheriff’s office said the second dog was recovered
and that the dog that was killed was the only one involved in the attack
Brazilian Rare Earths (ASX:BRE) has expanded the Monte Alto Project in Brazil to a “district-scale exploration opportunity” after receiving assay results from a regional exploration program
The $596.62 million market capitalisation company reports the latest assay results highlight the project’s exploration potential across a series of intense district-scale magnetic anomalies that run adjacent to the initial Monte Alto deposit.
These anomalies reveal new, ‘highly prospective’ rare earths exploration corridors that extend 3km to the south and 4km to the southwest of the initial discovery
Monte Alto’s targeted exploration area has doubled.
The latest assays from the regional exploration work returned grades up to 14.6% total rare earth oxide
and heavy rare earth grades of up to 6,691 parts per million (ppm) dysprosium oxide
CEO Bernardo da Veiga says these results underscore the prospectivity of Monte Alto’s “high grade” rare earths province.
“The discoveries significantly expand Monte Alto’s target exploration area and demonstrate its world-class scale
exceptional rare earth grades and substantial potential for exploration upside,” Veiga says.
“We are thrilled with the exceptionally high-grade heavy rare earths assays from an outcropping discovery located just 2.5km from Monte Alto.”
ongoing exploration aims to expand the discoveries and evaluate the potential for large deposits of “high-grade” heavy rare earth mineralisation within the expanded target area.
The company says priority exploration will focus on mapping the extension of the rare earth mineralised system of the VPRS across the broader Monte Alto district-scale exploration area.
Brazilian Rare Earths intends to deploy a drone-based geophysical survey system in the coming months to amplify magnetic and radiometric image resolution.
this drone-based survey system will be used to expedite high-resolution geophysical data coverage across the Sulista and Pelé project areas.
Brazilian Rare Earths intends to release the first phase results from the project’s metallurgical study in due course.

involved in either pit bull breeding or pit bull rescue
2024 fatally mauled by one of her own pit bulls
the death of Geronima Florez spotlighted one of the longtime Texas animal care and control disaster areas
lying alongside the Mexican border in the lower Rio Grande Valley
and is among the half dozen fastest growing
Hidalgo County was notorious in the 1990s for having one of the highest community rates of dog and cat population control killing in the U.S.
providing animal care and control housing for the five biggest cities in the county
in 2020 boasted of achieving “no kill” status by dint of reaching a 90% “live release rate.”
has averaged one a year since the shelters claimed “no kill” status
Other pit bull-related incidents are frequent
sporadic law enforcement against cockfighting and other cockfighting-related crime mainly shows how far out of control the situation is
and lurking behind it all is the likelihood that if canine rabies ever returns to the U.S
the Rio Grande Valley is where it will happen
In July 1979 a canine rabies outbreak spread across the border from Piedras Negras
killing an unidentified 9-year-old boy in Piedras Negras; eight-year-old Gerardo Castano
who lived in Eagle Pass but was bitten in Piedras Negras; and Marianita Garza
canine rabies spread from Mexico into 21 southern Texas counties
The outbreak persisted among both dogs and coyotes for a decade
killing a Starr County women in 1991 and a 14-year-old Hidalgo County boy in November 1994
Three winters of aerial distribution of oral rabies vaccine pellets finally quelled the outbreak in 1998
The temperature-sensitive vaccine pellets could not be deployed effectively except during the winter months
Geronima Florez.(eternallightfuneralhome photo)
Sergeant Enrique Longoria of the Hidalgo County Police Department told ValleyCentral.com reporter Janelle Tanguma that Geronima Florez suffered injuries to her neck and the left side of her head from a black pit bull
“one of many dogs on her property,” Tanguma wrote
“We feel that it was because during the feeding times the other dogs became territorial
“and our investigation is leading us to believe that’s why she was attacked by her own canine.”
“Longoria said the results of the autopsy substantiate the dog attack,” which her brother partially witnessed after responding to her screams
“When Florez’s brother [Gilbert Florez] walked in on the attack,” Tanguma explained
“he shot the dog and Florez was transported to a hospital where she later died
“Authorities said 25 other dogs were recovered from her property by animal control
Many of the dogs were believed to be only one to two weeks old
“The investigation revealed that Florez would often take in strays from the neighborhood and care for them,” Tanguma said
(Virgil Wilson Mortuary & Lord & I Funeral Homes photo)
Florez was the second dog attack fatality of 2024 in Hidalgo County
2024 near West Military Highway in Mission
half a mile north of the Rio Grande and the Mexican border
Garza suffered multiple bites to his arms and legs
according to the Hidalgo County sheriff’s office
and dogs were seen continuing to bite his corpse
One dog with blood around his mouth was impounded at the scene
There were no dog attack fatalities reported in Hidalgo County in 2023
2023 at the McAllen-Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge into Mexico
two days after his three free-roaming pit bulls killed Lewis Flores
were both charged with second-degree felonies and sued by Flores’ survivors
(See If pit bull victims were billionaires in a leaky sub, public might give a damn.)
The Hidalgo County post-no kill body count began with the death of Maria Rachel Perez
Her remains were discovered by her 10-year-old granddaughter when the granddaughter came home from school
Hidalgo County animal shelters in 2002 killed 34,026 dogs and cats
and local lawyer Bob Sobel told ANIMALS 24-7
as improved access to spay/neuter services held surplus dog and cat births down somewhat while the human population doubled
founded in McAllen 1974 as the Upper Valley Humane Society and still the biggest shelter serving the county
in 2018 initiated the drive to achieve a 90% “live release rate,” during which animal intakes fell to circa 16,000
The posted Palm Valley Animal Society “live release rate” reached 90% in 2020
but as of March 2024 was back down to 82.9%
When exactly pit bulls became a visible threat to public health and safety in Hidalgo County is unclear
but certainly it was before three-year-old Mariah Puga of Hargill was killed in her family’s yard on July 25
an 18-month-old pit bull killed his five-year-old human playmate Pablo Lopez in Weslaco
when another dog walked by outside the fence
The attack was reportedly stopped by a sheriff’s deputy’s shotgun
Pit bulls believed to have been translocated from Hidalgo County to Long Island for adoption by an organization called Ruff House Rescue attacked their adopters in 2011 and 2012
(See Shelter sued for rehoming pit bull who attacked woman.)
Non-fatal pit bull attacks followed on a four-year-old girl and her grandmother in October 2012 in Weslaco; three small dogs at the McAllen Dog Park in April 2013; a nine-year-old boy who was mauled by three pit bulls in Progreso in January 2014
leading to criminal charges against owner Americo Garcia
37; and a 56-year-old Mission man who suffered a pack attack in January 2015
Breaking up the string of pit bull incidents was a May 2015 attack by a border collie on a 10-month-old baby at the Valley Gateway RV Park
Two other border collies were reportedly in the home
Amid frequent public complaints about Hidalgo County law enforcement failing to respond effectively to pit bulls running at large
was arrested in March 2017 for allegedly shooting her neighbor’s three pit bulls after they attacked her dogs in November 2016
Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino did have other animal-related crimes to pursue
were shot dead and eight people were wounded by two to four gunmen who allegedly fired indiscriminately into the crowd at a cockfight 20 miles northeast of McAllen
Trevino told media that Garza was likely only an attendee
but that the Garcias were known to authorities for previous criminal activity
Arraigned for promoting cockfighting were land owners Heriberto Leandro
Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputies and the U.S
on one count of capital murder resulting from a double homicide on October 27
Godinez was charged five days later with killing both Jesus Antonio Geel and Erik Eduardo Martinez
Both suspects were reportedly also charged with drug offenses
Godinez was additionally charged with being a felon in possession of a weapon
Cockfighting-related murder might have been less of an issue in Hidalgo County
if the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office had been a bit more ambitious about busting cockfights
Alleged cockfighting hosts Pablo and Diana Cazares were criminally charged in February 2014

If you find yourself in Guanacaste during dry season and you want to go outside but just can’t take that powerful sun cooking the fun out of your outdoor activities
Go visit Reserva Natural Monte Alto in Nicoya
Make stopping in town for a meal either before or after your hike part of your Monte Alto itinerary
While it’s a perfectly wonderful place to visit just about any time of the year
I mentioned visiting during the height of dry season because Monte Alto offers a break from the sometimes oppressive heat of December through April
This is due to its elevation of between 450 and 900 meters above sea level
which makes its forest a transition from Tropical Humid Forest to Very Humid Premontane Forest
These are technical terms that describe life zones that mean as little to me as they do to most of you
it’s a type of forest whose towering trees still have leaves to provide shade during a time of year when all of the trees around the beaches are bare and covered in road dust
Monte Alto is the ideal day trip for any nature lover
There are four extremely well-kept trails that can be enjoyed by folks of all ages
Some are short and sweet; others can take a few hours and one includes an overlook that allows you to take in practically the entire Nicoya Peninsula
If you’re travelling a long distance or really want to take your time on the trails
You can call ahead to reserve a rustic little cabin for you and up to 15 of your friends
Monte Alto has the biodiversity to satisfy all visitors
and 64 species of mammals and that’s not even close to the complete species list
I personally got a small taste of Monte Alto’s wildlife when I completed a camera trap study there between 2020 and 2021
With just a handful of camera traps, we recorded nearly 2,000 wildlife videos including collared peccaries, tayras, ocelots, and the reserve’s first recorded video evidence of pumas
I’ll include a video with a few clips below
Going into the study I expected interesting results because I had reviewed previous studies and in general Costa Rica’s biodiversity never fails to disappoint
What came as an extra bonus was when I realized that the people that work at Monte Alto are fantastic
To a man (or lady) everyone I met and worked with there was helpful and pleasant
One of the trails in Monte Alto is lined with all types of these little flowers and his expertise in each was impressive
Miguel actually discovered a new species of plant in Monte Alto which he named (Tabernaemontana hannae) after his daughter Hanna
I still pester Miguel to this day via WhatsApp whenever I have an orchid question
Monte Alto is open Monday through Saturday from 8am to 4pm and costs a mere $5 to enjoy its forested trails
practice your Spanish and ask him a question about orchids
and have a lovely day in Reserva Natural Monte Alto
A 48-year-old Monte Alto woman died Friday after colliding with a Freightliner tractor-truck
according to the Texas Department of Public Transportation
The crash occurred west of Monte Alto at around 12:06 a.m
when the tractor-truck was backing into a private drive off of FM 2812 west of Monte Alto when a 2020 Nissan Rogue collided into it
The sole occupant of the Nissan — identified as Melissa De Leon — succumbed to her injuries at the scene

there are portable art and ochre-stained tools
Apart from the Maschio dell’Artemisio pebble considered in this paper
recent discoveries from the Colli Albani area include: a female figurine sketched on a basalt pebble
a stone-striker/retoucher with engraved notches obtained on a marly limestone pebble
a flint core painted with geometric patterns
a retouched blade and an end-scraper (Altamura
The pigment on some of the finds cannot be straightforwardly interpreted as having a symbolic meaning (e.g
2019) and/or artistic purpose (Salomon et al.
2006): in fact ochre has been used for several purposes

Previous studies showed that OO can diminish skin aging induced by chronic psychological stress of mice by the NF-κB and NRF2 pathways [8]
