On early Tuesday morning, February 13, two dangerous prisoners, who were serving their sentences in one of the five maximum security prisons spread across Brazil, escaped. The inmates — imprisoned in a jail located in Mossoró, in the interior of the State of Rio Grande do Norte — were members of the Comando Vermelho one of the most powerful Brazilian criminal groups The jailbreak — the first in the federal penitentiary system which was created in 2006 by the first administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva due to the inability of state authorities to manage the prisons — has put the maximum security network to the test It has become a serious crisis for Minister of Justice Ricardo Lewandowski both inmates were transferred to the intensely-supervised prison that they escaped from after leading a riot in a prison in the state of Acre that left five inmates dead The minister has proposed building walls around prisons in addition to increasing the number of guards The clues collected by investigators indicate that — according to the local press — the prisoners were able to take advantage of the fact that the yard is under renovation They obtained construction materials that helped them escape They allegedly made a hole in the ceiling of their cell and then cut through the fence The authorities haven’t provided details regarding how the escape of 36-year-old Rogério da Silva Mendonça 36 — nicknamed “Tatu” — and 34-year-old Deibson Cabral Nascimento occurred Both were subjected to the harshest prison regime Minister Lewandowski described the event as “serious” in a press conference but added: “It occurred [following] a series of negative coincidences National Secretary of Penitentiary Policy André García emphasized that “if the security protocols had been respected there would have been no possibility of an escape occurring.” The senior ministry official has avoided speculating about the circumstances “We haven’t ruled out any of the possibilities: the relaxed [attitude of the guards] the facilitation [of the escape by certain guards] He took over the Ministry of Justice on February 1 he has ordered the administrators of the Mossoró Prison to be immediately suspended from their duties He has also decreed that — for now — visits and going out to the yard are prohibited has deployed a manhunt that includes road patrols and helicopter flights across the area The neighboring states of Paraíba and Ceará have also been notified The governor belongs to the Workers’ Party The federal penitentiary system is quite different from the ordinary network of prisons These regular prisons often end up being run by the criminals themselves: there’s plenty of violence while even basic things — sometimes even food — are missing And if the prisoners don’t have relatives to bring them food or personal hygiene products such as the one where the escape occurred — or the one in the capital of Brasília is being held — each prisoner receives a tracksuit The water in the shower turns off after five minutes Inmates receive razor blades that they must return as soon as they finish shaving These federal facilities are extremely different from ordinary prisons there’s also a third model: prisons in which the inmates act as guards and where weapons are prohibited Very few Brazilians are jailed in such institutions Sign up for our weekly newsletter to get more English-language news coverage from EL PAÍS USA Edition ¿Quieres añadir otro usuario a tu suscripción ¿Por qué estás viendo esto? cambia tu suscripción a la modalidad Premium Cada uno accederá con su propia cuenta de email lo que os permitirá personalizar vuestra experiencia en EL PAÍS ¿Tienes una suscripción de empresa? cantaloupe to Piel de Sapo and the popularity of sugar melons and watermelons is equally on the rise on the European market according to Germany’s Import Promotion Desk (IPD).  IPD is set to present melon producers from Brazil and Morocco at next month’s Fruit Logistica in Berlin with Egyptian companies also expanding the IPD range with a wide assortment of water and sugar melons.  we can cover the diversity of melons and bring a high-quality range to the EU market,” said Thomas Derstadt IPD expert sourcing and markets specialist we optimally complement the European supply as Brazilian companies in particular focus their melon exports on our winter months.”  The import promotion initiative is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) connecting producers from developing and emerging countries with European importers IPD will be presenting over 40 companies from Egypt The Mossoró region in the state of Rio Grande do Norte is known for its melon cultivation with both the soil and climatic conditions in northeastern Brazil providing ideal conditions for melon cultivation.  This is where IPD company Viva Agricola grows watermelons and a variety of sugar melons “Viva Agricola has already supplied the EU via exporters in the past and as a direct supplier to regional supermarkets in Brazil the company has a good insight into the trade,” said Derstadt “Viva Agricola is one of the medium-sized companies in the Mossoró region that favours direct trade with European partners and deliberately sets itself apart from the large trading companies that dominate melon exports The advantage for trading partners is the direct exchange with their producer.” Watermelons and sugar melons grow in the region all year round exports to Europe are concentrated during the winter months in the Northern Hemisphere with Brazilian supplies complementing the European harvest window and filling the winter gap.  The company Fresh and Organic from Marrakech specialises in growing a particular cantaloupe variety: the small Charentais melon considered the finest of the cantaloupe melons with its sweet and aromatic orange-coloured flesh has found ideal growing conditions in Morocco with plenty of sun and targeted irrigation shortly before the start of the French season.  “The quality is outstanding,” said Thomas Derstadt “We have only received positive feedback from buyers so far the short distance to Europe is a good argument in favour of the Moroccan range of fresh fruit and vegetables.” The company Tiba Land offers honeydew melons and Piel de Sapo.  “Egypt is an established partner in the fresh sector for Europe,” said Derstadt “We have seen some movement in the melon supply in recent years Companies are expanding their involvement and adding more and more varieties of sugar melons to their portfolio.”  In addition to melons from Brazil and Morocco the range offered by the 40-plus companies at the IPD stand is also set to include avocados from Kenya ginger from Brazil and mangoes from Senegal Site powered by Webvision Cloud 1978: “Sistema de Produção para a Cultura da Algaroba,” Recife 1982: “I Simpósio
