Fizik’s Terra Nanuq GTX is a shoe for aggressive mountain biking in the coldest
If riding mountain bikes in the middle of winter doesn’t sound like fun
I bet it’s because you’ve never tried it with the right apparel and footwear
but gear up with a proper winter riding kit and your riding season doesn’t need to end
There’s lots of great options for winter riding apparel out there
but one area that’s fallen short has been footwear and Fizik’s new Terra Nanuq GTX winter shoe aims to change that
With mud season rearing its ugly head in the Tetons this November
I put these shoes through their paces on some Teton Valley singletrack and was stoked on dry
it looks similar to any old mountain bike shoe with a lugged outsole and a single BOA closure
but pull open the tongue and you'll see design cues straight from a winter mountaineering boot
the Nanuq GTX is designed to shield your feet from whatever’s out there
The shoe is available in both flat-pedal and cleat-ready versions
they broke in quickly and are now very comfortable
but the single BOA closure does a good job of getting the shoe to snug up evenly around my foot
especially when wearing thicker socks for winter riding
I tried some thinner summer socks since the shoes are very warm
and decided I was actually happier with that
My favorite part of the shoe by far is the ankle gaiter
Half of the battle in winter riding is keeping your feet dry
and Fizik’s gaiter works exceptionally well in doing so
The only other shoe that I’ve found to be as waterproof as these is the Five Ten Trailcross Pro
and wouldn’t be my first choice for cold and wet rides
There's a single ankle zipper on the inside of the shoe that allows for easy entry when putting them on
Given that the zipper is in an area that might get caught on a drivetrain or cranks
I’m not sure how long these will last but during my short test period I had zero issues with it
I think it’s an elegant solution - laces would clag and freeze up with snow and ice and become unusable
while velcro just doesn't seem to ever get a shoe to fit well
I think the dial is in a solidly impact-free spot on the shoe
and throughout my testing period I never had any issues with it
What’s really cool about these is that they’re not just designed as a fat bike or gravel shoe
they’re meant for aggressive trail riding in truly horrible conditions
Like the kind of days where your friends will suggest going to the movies instead
The shoe is quite stiff and very supportive
but the Vibram rubber outsole features soft rubber that stays glued to pedals and to slippery rocks and roots
The lugged outsole also lends itself well to hike-a-biking over rough and frozen terrain
and I felt that I stood slightly taller on my bike compared to low-profile summer shoes like the Five Ten Freerider Pro - I actually ended up bumping my seat height up a few millimeters to compensate for this
I don’t think this would be my go-to shoe when the temps aren’t at or below freezing - it’s simply too warm
and sweaty feet aren’t really my thing
I’d rather just stick to summer riding shoes
What kind of rider will get along with the Terra Nanuq GTX
I’m pretty excited about these shoes and their ability to add months to my riding season
but I’ll be using them for commutes to the store and maybe some gravel adventures
for those of you who live in areas where winter mountain biking is a thing
consider the Nanuq Terra GTX as your everyday riding shoe for the cold months.

Alaska — A 1-year-old Australian shepherd took an epic trek across 150 miles (241 kilometers) of frozen Bering Sea ice that included being bitten by a seal or polar bear before he was safely returned to his home in Alaska
Lawrence Island community in the Bering Strait
last month when Nanuq disappeared with their other family dog
150 miles (241 kilometers) northeast of Savoonga on Alaska's western coast
began posting pictures online of what they described as a lost dog
'There's a dog that looks like Nanuq in Wales,'" Iworrigan said
She reactivated her Facebook account to see if it might be her wandering hound
The events of Nanuq's journey will likely always be a mystery
Maybe the ice shifted while he was hunting," Iworrigan said
"I'm pretty sure he ate leftovers of seal or caught a seal
She used airline points to get her dog back to Gambell on a regional air carrier last week
a charter that was transporting athletes for the Bering Strait School District's Native Youth Olympics tournament
Iworrigan filmed the happy reunion when the plane landed at the air strip in Savoonga
with both she and her daughter Brooklyn shrieking with joy
with large bite marks from an unidentified animal
because it's like a really big bite," she said

was heading into his family’s home in Wales to sit down for coffee with his dad
the family dog and his sister’s dog ran up from the beach with an unfamiliar companion following them
“I thought it was just somebody's dog from here that they let out or something.”
Ahkinga and his family started looking for the owner around Wales
But no one seemed to know where the dog came from
It’s very unusual for a new dog to just show up there
Wales is miles from any other inhabited town and not connected by roads
the dog seemed happier and was becoming more lively
“He started being bossy when he rested up a little more,” said Ahkinga
and he began thinking he might keep the dog if they couldn’t find an owner
They posted a photo of the dog on the Nome Chatter Facebook group asking if anyone knew his identity
Members of the group quickly made a connection
He looked exactly like a lost 1-year-old pup named Nanuq from Gambell on St
more than 160 miles away across the Bering Sea
Nanuq survived an incredible journey across the sea ice to get to Wales
Owner Mandy Iworrigan said her dogs Nanuq and Starlight had run off in mid-March along with her uncle’s dog Ghost
This happened while Iworrigan was on a trip to Savoonga with her kids for a family funeral
She hadn’t been to Savoonga in over 19 years so it was an important trip—and an expensive one
But she was able to fly there with donations and Bering Air points
her daughter told her she saw a dog that looked like Starlight while playing outside
Iworrigan said she assumed it was just a doppelganger when the dog greeted her
But then she noticed the tail was the same
and even the way the dog ran alongside her daughter was the same
She doesn’t know how Starlight ended up in Savoonga
but she was able to get her home on a Bering Air flight
Iworrigan told people in Savoonga to look out for Nanuq in case the two dogs traveled together and got separated
She was in disbelief when Nanuq showed up in Wales a couple weeks later
and she was thankful to the people who took care of him
“I just prayed and had faith he would come home
There's caring and loving people out there
a chartered Bering Air flight was traveling from Wales to Gambell that afternoon
The plane was carrying athletes headed to the Bering Strait School District’s annual competition for the Native Youth Olympics
and a teacher in Wales let Iworrigan borrow a kennel
Ahkinga went to the airport to say goodbye
Now Nanuq is at home and being treated with antibiotics for what appears to be a bite wound
the animal control officer for Nome and the region
but said she didn’t view it as a feel-good story
“I just think letting dogs out loose is never going to be okay
and almost every single village has at least a rule about dogs being loose,” Stotts said
“An unknown animal and an unknown community is never going to be a safe situation.”
She said she didn’t want to vilify the owner
but Stott’s job is to limit the unregulated transport of animals in the region—not just for the safety of the dogs
Although Iworrigan said her dogs were up to date on their shots
Stotts said even dogs that are vaccinated against contagious diseases like Parvo can still be carriers
“I get that things happen that are out of our control,” Sotts said
“That's why it's so important that the things that are within our control are paid attention to.”
Stotts explained that she is especially concerned with preventing such situations because Gambell experienced a double outbreak of rabies and distemper in 2021
that they sent up a USDA professional population culling team and nearly blacklisted the whole Nome region from letting dogs travel regardless of their vaccination status
Gambell recently signed up to be part of the Regional Animal Care and Control initiative
the Bering Sea Humane Society sends enrolled villages free vaccines
dog houses and any kind of animal care or animal control related resources

had already been through a bit of a saga with one of her family’s other dogs a few weeks before
While she was visiting Savoonga in March with her kids
“So I had my other half come look around town.”
Her uncle said Ghost did this all the time — disappeared for a ramble out on the tundra for a week or two
“‘But he always finds his way back,’” Iworrigan’s uncle assured her
it was worrisome not to know where two of her family’s beloved animals were
Each of her three kids has a dog of their own
treated more like a little sibling than a pet
mom -- there’s a dog that looks like Starlight,’” Iworrigan said
but the dog kept following her youngest daughter Zoe around
even trotting alongside a sled to stay close
What are you doing in Savoonga?’ ” Iworrigan recounted in an interview Monday
a doppelgänger: Their dog had somehow gotten herself three dozen miles to the next town over
a 1-year-old Australian shepherd belonging to her 8-year-old daughter Brooklyn
so she left to go back home with some friends keeping an eye out
It was about a week later when word came back that Nanuq might have gone a good deal farther than Savoonga
‘There’s a dog that looks like Nanuq in Wales,’ ” Iworrigan said
The tiny town at the far western edge of the Seward Peninsula is a 166-mile straight shot from Gambell over plates of sea ice feeding into the choke point of the Bering Strait
People there had posted images of a dog nobody recognized to a Facebook group used by people in Nome and the surrounding communities for trading news
Iworrigan had been off Facebook but reactivated her account to try to verify whether or not the interloping hound might be Nanuq
She still isn’t sure about the particulars of Nanuq’s trip across the sea ice
Maybe the ice shifted while he was hunting,” Iworrigan said
“I’m pretty sure he ate leftovers of seal or caught a seal
A young man and his sister in Wales watched out for Nanuq for a few days while Iworrigan figured out how to get Nanuq home
There are no direct flights from Wales to St
but there was a charter bringing some school kids from there through Nome and out to Gambell for the Bering Strait School District’s Native Youth Olympics tournament
Iworrigan managed to get Nanuq onboard in a crate lent to her by a teacher, and used her airline points on a regional carrier to cover the expense of freighting the dog all the way back home. He arrived last Thursday. A video posted to Facebook shows Brooklyn sprinting to the plane’s cargo keep to greet Nanuq between periodic shrieks of excitement
In spite of being gone from home a month during the tail-end of winter
Iworrigan said — save for a swollen leg with two large bite marks from an animal she can’t quite identify
because it’s like a really big bite,” she said
using the Siberian Yupik word for a polar bear
She and her daughter have been cleaning the wounds and were waiting on antibiotics to arrive
but are mostly just relieved that their family’s most adventurous 1-year-old member is back home safe
Iworrigan said she has never heard of a Gambell dog ever walking across the sea ice to the Seward Peninsula
News of Starlight and Nanuq’s adventures ricocheted around the internet
granting them a bit of fame on Alaska Facebook
both of them would have one heck of a story,” Iworrigan said
Alongside them is a neighbor’s dog, which was photographed dragging a seal it caught away from a lead in the sea ice last month, the picture included in social media posts as more evidence that St. Lawrence Island dogs are a bit heartier than the average Alaska poodle or malamute.
“Three dogs that are famous here in Gambell,” Iworrigan chuckled. “They can hunt and catch their own seal. So I’m laughing about that.”
She added that if it hadn’t been for kindly good Samaritans looking out for an unfamiliar dog and taking the time to put the information online, she and her family might never have gotten their dog back.
“Alaska has caring people, and I’m happy for that. I’m blessed and fortunate,” she said. “There’s people that actually care out there.”

MINI USA REVEALS 2023 MINI COOPER ELECTRIC SE IN NEW NANUQ WHITE COLOR INFLUENCED BY MINI FANS
Following the celebration of International Polar Bear Week, (October 30-November 5), MINI USA announces the launch of a new Nanuq white paint finish on the 2023 MINI Electric Cooper SE
named Nanuq White was inspired by the name of the loveable polar bear character created by the brand’s creative agency Pereira O’Dell along with enthusiastic feedback from the MINI owner community
The campaign for the 2023 MINI Cooper SE Electric first launched in April 2022 on Earth Day, features a partnership with MINI USA and Polar Bears International to encourage eco-adoptions from the MINI community – and the polar bear love grew from there
MINI USA received an outpouring from the MINI community with questions asking where they could get hold of a polar bear bobble head featured in the campaign
The overwhelming engagement of the MINI community with the polar bear character led to the idea to let the community give it a name
Nanuq – Inuit for “polar bear” – was the chosen name
which led to the new MINI Cooper SE paint color with the same name to be revealed following International Polar Bear Week by MINI USA
“We’re excited to see the strength of our MINI owner community and our commitment to sustainability intersect in a very creative way to help support Polar Bears International.” said Rah Mahtani
“MINI is a brand that is not only about having fun
but also about amplifying the voice of its customers and community to affect positive change.”
The 2023 MINI Cooper SE stays true to what owners love about MINI
while providing the broader benefits of full electrification. The MINI Cooper SE provides MINI’s signature electrified go-kart feeling and driving fun
while helping to minimize its environmental footprint
The model is an important step in MINI’s stated goal of offering an all-electric line-up of vehicles around 2030
The original campaign ran with paid media across DOOH
and was featured on the MINI and PBI websites
A full case study video was created to highlight the creative journey from initial campaign to fan engagement that led to the name of both the polar bear mascot and the new paint color
“This was supposed to be a story about a car that is good for the environment and super fun to drive.” said PJ Pereira, Creative Chairman at Pereira O’Dell
“Maybe about the charm of this not-so-little mascot too
But then it snowballed into an even better story about enthusiasm
passion and creativity of the MINI community.”
To give that enthusiasm an even bigger impact,MINI USA partnered with Polar Bears International (PBI) on the 2023 MINI Cooper SE Hardtop campaign
PBI is the only non-profit organization dedicated solely to polar bears and Arctic sea ice
and MINI USA’s partnership aims to promote awareness of the NGO’s polar bear conservation efforts
Anyone that donates $40 or more to PBI via the PBI Eco-Adoption page during the month of November will receive a polar bear bobblehead and a thank you card while supplies last
Customers who pre-order a MINI Cooper SE during the month of November will also receive a bobblehead while they wait for their MINI.
MINI USA are also refreshing their paid assets to feature the new Nanuq white paint color
which will include social and digital assets driving to the MINI Electric Pre-Order page
“We’re grateful to MINI USA for their generous support and pledging their polar promise in protection of polar bear conservation efforts and the company’s dedication to a more sustainable future,” said Krista Wright
Executive Director of Polar Bears International
we hope to inspire conversation around the important steps we can each take in preserving the planet for future generations.”
Anyone can make a difference and encourage their community to slow climate change

A dog that went missing in Alaska last month arrived home safely after making a 150-mile trek on the frozen Bering Sea
But residents of the small community in Wales were confused: no one could figure out who the dog's owner was
we've never seen it here in Wales before," wrote a resident on a Facebook discussion group for locals
Mandy Iworrigan received word that her daughter's missing dog had shown up on the end of the Bering Strait
'there's a dog that looks like Nanuq in Wales','" Iworrigan told Insider
whose name means "polar bear" in Siberian Yupik
Their dogs often go out on their own into the tundra
But when Nanuq and Starlight went missing for longer than usual
Iworrigan's family got concerned and searched around town for their pets
a town 37 miles from Gambell but still on St
around two and a half weeks after vanishing
apparently took an additional week to walk across Bering Sea ice and arrive in Wales
Iworrigan isn't sure how Nanuq survived the long winter trek to Wales
but surmised he might have caught animals in the area.
"I was just amazed he made it all the way out there," she said
She used airline points to get the pup a spot on a regional charter plane last week
after the dog had stayed with some local friends in Wales for a few days.
A video posted by Iworrigan on Friday showed her daughter reuniting with Nanuq after the plane landed
The family later posted photos of Nanuq in their home
Iworrigan noticed several bite marks on Nanuq's leg
but said she wasn't sure if they were caused by a wolverine
When asked if she ever feared the worst about Nanuq and Starlight
Iworrigan said she always believed they'd come back
Fizik Terra Nanuq GTX winter boots combine Gore-Tex Koala membrane and fleece lining inside
The Vibram sole has a chunky tread for traction on soft terrain
The boots are secured using a single Boa L6 dial
One guess for who supplied the waterproofing for the Terra Nanuq GTX winter boot
A zipped cuff and rear loop reduce the amount of wiggling to get your feet in
and excellent breathability make the Fizik Terra Nanuq GTX one of the best winter boots available
turning the heating up is expensive though
Cuff doesn't hug the ankle when heels are dropped
Fizik released the Terra Nanuq GTX winter boots late last year
ready to tackle the grotty winter climates that were inbound
Insulated and waterproofed with a Gore-Tex liner
I have been putting the Fizik Terra Nanuq GTX to the test to see if they can keep my toes cozy on the coldest days.
The Fizik Terra Nanuq GTX's main form of defense against weather unpleasantries is the Gore-Tex Koala membrane
This thin layer works in the same way as Gore-Tex’s other waterproof jacket fabrics
featuring holes that are too small for water droplets to enter but large enough to allow water vapor molecules to escape thus giving Gore-Tex the breathability it's known for
A neoprene ankle cuff extends upwards to help stop puddle splashes from finding their way into the shoe and to further enhance the cozy levels
there is an insulated insole and fleecy lining inside
Externally the Terra Nanuq GTX is covered in a ripstop fabric which is further protected by a generous amount of PU covering
Both the heel and toe cups feature a decent amount of protection from the gritty nature of winter and stumbling around on slippery rocks.
Underneath Fizik has specced a chunky Vibram XS Trek EVO rubber tread with directional lugs to enhance grip in slippy winter conditions
The sole itself uses a Nylon shank and an EVA midsole with a stiffness index of three according to Fizik
The cleat is a standard two-bolt setup with a 32mm slot and some guidelines to help with lining your cleats up
The Terra Nanuq GTX uses a single Boa L6 dial with a lace that crosses twice across the midfoot
The L6 dial allows clicks tighter and pops open to loosen
The ankle cuff has a short zipper to open the shoe up to help slip your foot in
Fizik has added a pull loop on the back too so you can tug them on
there are plenty of non-winterized enduro shoes that are around the same 500g per shoe weight
Fizik offers the Terra Nanuq GTX in both the clipless version I have on test and a flat pedal shoe version that features a flat pedal optimized tread
the Terra Nanuq GTX only comes in a single Black / Grey colorway
with most sizes coming in half-size options as well.
As Fizik states “warm feet are fast feet” and the Fizik Terra Nanuq GTX certainly performed well
keeping my toes cozy on the wettest and most unpleasant days
The comfortable fleece lining paired with my regular riding socks was all I needed on snowy rides to keep my digits warm
The Gore-Tex Koala membrane laughed off boggy hike-a-bike and puddle splashes keeping feet dry no matter how many times they were submerged
the cuff doesn’t always sit flush with the ankle and can create a gap if you drop your heels when riding
That means water can sneak in if your pant leg doesn’t extend well past the ankle cuff
Even with a little dampness working its way in
but it isn’t trapped within either as the Terra Nanuq GTX delivers impressive breathability
On one test ride temperatures were significantly warmer than expected
the Terra Nanuq GTX managed moisture buildup very well
Getting them on requires a little twisting of the foot to slide in but otherwise
The single Boa securely held my foot in place and I didn’t experience any discomfort from the neoprene ankle cuff’s zip
There is plenty of adjustment for cleat positioning and
despite being a little bigger and heavier than a standard shoe
I didn’t have a problem clipping in and out
winter boots are notorious for taking ages to dry again
drying themselves out overnight next to a radiator
Not only does this mean you will have dry feet every ride
but it should hopefully reduce the build-up of unpleasant smells too
The make or break of a winter ride is often based on whether you can feel your fingers and toes during the ride
The Fizik Terra Nanuq GTX’s cozy lining
and high-quality construction kept my feet warm and comfortable on the winteriest rides
Winter shoes are never cheap and the $299.99 / £289.99 / €279 price tag is no small sum
if you can justify the cost Fizik’s Terra Nanuq GTX are a worthwhile investment for those who want to ensure winter warmth on a trail ride.

Home » 2024 MINI Countryman JCW Introduced in Nanuq White
we’ve had the privilege of driving the new MINI Countryman John Cooper Works (JCW) and its electrifying sibling
While the driving dynamics of these models remain under wraps due to an embargo
the design elements are certainly not a secret
is a more mature and grown up version of the original Countrymans
it also comes with a wide variety of exterior colors
So far, we’ve seen the Countryman JCW in the iconic Midnight Black with the classic Chili Red
but this time around we had the chance to photographed the car in this unique color
The paint is complemented by a black roof and mirror caps
The distinctive JCW design cues sets it apart though
especially with the vertical red decorative elements in the front apron’s side air inlets
there are plenty of other John Cooper Works design items around the car to remind us of its status
the 2024 Countryman JCW stands out with a large hexagonal grille
new LED headlights with distinctive circular rings
and digitally customizable Union Jack taillights
The side profile is marked by muscular wheel arches
The rear end doesn’t shy away from making a statement with its roof spoiler
and a diffuser that further accentuates its sporty demeanor
The vehicle rides on 19- or 20-inch wheels
and features a high-performance braking system with Chili Red calipers
But the true hallmark of this powerhouse is its four tailpipes
signaling the presence of a powerful turbo four-cylinder engine under the hood
This engine BMW B48 is the same as in the X1 M35i and X2 M35i
exactly the same as the BMW X1 M35i and X2 M35i sold on the Old Continent
just like the two M Performance crossovers available in North America where there are less stringent emissions regulations compared to the European Union
the sporty Countryman matches the torque of its Bavarian siblings
It runs to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.4 seconds and tops out at an electronically governed 155 mph (250 km/h) to echo the two performance-oriented BMW crossovers
As we await the green light to share more about the driving experience
we can share today some exclusive photos of the MINI Countryman John Cooper Works in Nanuq White

Home » 2023 MINI Cooper SE Revealed With Nanuq White Paint
MINI kicked off the marketing campaign for the 2023 Cooper SE on Earth Day in April with a polar bear riding shotgun in the electric hatchback
Little did the BMW-owned brand know the cutesy bear would become an Internet sensation
triggering an invitation to give the hypercarnivorous bear a name
It bears (pun intended) the “Nanuq” name as a nod to “polar bear” in Inuit
MINI has found the perfect opportunity to use the moniker
A fresh Nanuq White finish is available for the 2023 Cooper SE as a no-cost option
The paint’s name highlights MINI’s collaboration with Polar Bears International
a non-profit organization focused on addressing the problems that are endangering polar bears
people who donate at least $40 to PBI get a polar bear bobblehead as well as a thank you card
Preordering the EV this month will also get one to ease the wait until the electric hatch arrives
the MINI Cooper SE starts at $34,225 and you can optionally get the Iconic Trim 2.0 (+$2,475) to add a head-up display
The more expensive trim level comes along with a piano black exterior trim
The Nanuq White can be combined with side mirror caps painted in a different color as well as the Multitone roof in red or blue
All 2023 Cooper SEs come with a choice of 16- or 17-inch wheels
and SiriusXM satellite radio with a one-year subscription
There are more EVs to come from MINI as the Oxford-based marque has pledged to discontinue sales of new cars with combustion engines around 2030. New zero-emission models on the way include a next-generation Countryman in EV form and a production version of the Aceman concept introduced earlier this year
COVID-19 Sep 17
Since the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions came into effect in Nunavut last March
which has affected businesses like the Nanuq Lodge and Nanuq Executive Suites
With non-essential travel still discouraged within and to Nunavut, hotels outside the territorial capital continue to feel the impact of COVID-19 restrictions
Business at the small privately run Nanuq Lodge and Nanuq Executive Suites in Rankin Inlet has finally begun to pick up
this popular place to stay was usually booked solid
who runs the business with her partner John Makayak Hickes
and then there was no business,” Burt said
Nanuq took a big financial hit when Nunavut’s COVID-19 restrictions halted all but essential travel in March and airlines cut back their service through Rankin Inlet
Burt said Nanuq applied for money from the Canadian Northern Economic Development agency through the Northern Business Relief Fund
The fund was launched on April 20 to provide short-term help paying for ongoing fixed costs for small- and medium-sized businesses in all three territories
The NBRF would provide qualifying businesses like Nanuq with up to 100 per cent of eligible fixed costs
up to a maximum of $100,000 over a four-month period
But when Burt spoke earlier this month to Nunatsiaq News
she said they still hadn’t received any CanNor money
To keep cash flowing, Nanuq decided to collect on bills that were still unpaid after last fall’s ransomware attack that delayed Government of Nunavut’s bill payments
also deferred interest on Nanuq’s loans
“It was stressful because you worry about how long it is going on
but it wasn’t as horrific as things sounded in the south.”
Page Burt works as a naturalist guide at the Bathurst Lodge in Bathurst Inlet
which shut down for the 2020 season due to the pandemic
there are nine rooms with double beds and seven two-room suites
In 2016, Alex Sammurtok, MLA for Rankin Inlet South, who was pushing for an elders’ care facility in his home community, suggested Nanuq Lodge might fit the bill
planned 24-bed long-term care facility in Rankin Inlet was cancelled this summer to allow for the design to include new infection-prevention standards
Nanuq has increased its disinfecting of rooms
but there are microwaves and fridges in every room and new convection burners
But she’s no longer cooking muffins because guests told her they want everything to be wrapped
Burt usually spends part of every summer as a naturalist guide at the Bathurst Lodge in Bathurst Inlet
But that lodge also cancelled its 2020 season
“That came to a screeching halt because people just can’t come,” Burt said
Burt said she accepts them: “with the housing situation here it would be hard to keep elders from getting sick.”
the economic toll of COVID-19 continues to add up in the Kivalliq region
where the 2020 Kivalliq Trade Fair was also cancelled
Nunavut’s annual tourism report for 2018-19 said Rankin Inlet had 33,600 visits, which produced $68 million in spending. Most of that money won’t be flowing in 2020 due to COVID-19.

His cause of death is still unknown, and autopsy results won't be available for another six to eight weeks, the company said on its Facebook page Friday
Nanuq, who was thought to be 31 or 32 years old, was on long-term loan from the Vancouver Aquarium, the Orlando Sentinel reported
He had been at SeaWorld San Diego until he was sent to Orlando as part of the park's breeding program
"While the cause of death is not yet known
Nanuq was being treated by SeaWorld veterinarians for an infection associated with a fractured jaw; an injury that resulted from an interaction between two animals that were part of a compatible social group," the company wrote on its Facebook page
Animal Welfare Institute marine mammal scientist Naomi Rose, a noted critic of SeaWorld, told the Orlando Sentinel that such an injury would be unlikely in the wild
"If he died because of something related to that infection he got related to the broken jaw," she said
Rose told the Sentinel that scientists are still debating beluga life spans. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
belugas in the wild live anywhere from 35 to 50 years

Last month, Mandy Iworrigan — Nanuq's owner, who lives in Gambell, Alaska — and her family were visiting Savoogna, another St Lawrence Island community on the Bering Strait, when Nanuq disappeared with their other family dog, Starlight, the Anchorage Daily News reported.
Starlight turned up a few weeks later, but Nanuq — which means polar bear in Siberian Yupik — was nowhere to be found.
About a month after Nanuq disappeared, people in Wales, 241km north-east of Savoonga, on Alaska's western coast, began posting pictures online of what they described as a lost dog.
"My dad texted me and said, 'There's a dog that looks like Nanuq in Wales','" Ms Iworrigan said.
She reactivated her Facebook account to see if it might be her wandering hound.
The events of Nanuq's journey will likely always be a mystery.
"I have no idea why he ended up in Wales. Maybe the ice shifted while he was hunting," Ms Iworrigan said.
"I'm pretty sure he ate leftovers of seal or caught a seal. Probably birds, too. He eats our native foods. He's smart."

She used airline points to get her dog back to Gambell on a regional air carrier last week, a charter that was transporting athletes for the Bering Strait School District's Native Youth Olympics tournament.
Ms Iworrigan filmed the happy reunion when the plane landed at the air strip in Savoonga, with both she and her daughter, Brooklyn, shrieking with joy.
Except for a swollen leg, with large bite marks from an unidentified animal, Nanuq was in pretty good health.
"Wolverine, seal, small Nanuq, we don't know, because it's like a really big bite," she said.

All the warmth and comfort of a winter boot
Fizik has a new version of its Terra Nanuq GTX winter boot, and for the first time you can get it in a flat pedal version as well as the usual clipless. That means those of us who want to stay riding flat pedals when the trails are at their slippiest (most of us at mbr) can still get access to the best mountain bike winter boots. Hurrah.
The Fizik Terra Nanuq GTX is actually pretty low profile for a full-on winter boot with Gore-Tex membrane
The new Terra Nanuq GTX gets a fully waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex Koala membrane, whether you’re going for the clipless or flat version. That means sweat can get out while snow, water, mud and dog eggs stay outside.
Gore-Tex is pretty well known to most of us, but the Koala addition looks like being Fizik’s own name for the breathable membrane when used on a winter boot. Importantly, the liner comes high up in the boot, all the way to the neoprene cuff, meaning there’s no lace holes to let water in.
Inside is a soft, brushed fleece lining to keep your feet toastie, and the fit is on the generous size so you can pile on the thick socks too if needed. There’s no need to upsize and make allowances for this.
BOA’s micro-adjustable dial lets you back off the pressure when your feet get warmed up inside the shoe
What about when it’s not freezing cold though, but you still want dry feet? Fizik has thought of that, and the Terra Nanuq GTX uses a BOA L6 dial so you can back off the pressure to allow for big socks, or cinch it up tight. There’s also a zippered cuff to help you slide them off when they’re honking and the last thing you want to be grappling with.
The rest of the outsole is made up with a reinforced toecap, heel and low side, which has been reinforced with thermolaminated PU.
The heart and sole: flat pedal boots need even grippier soles that conventional mtb shoes
Flat pedal shoes are hopeless without a decent connection to the bike. Fizik has built the Terra Nanuq GTX with a Vibram X2 outsole to help that connection, and there are big deep-groove lugs for mechanical grip. We’ll bring you a full review when we get our hands on a pair.
Nanuq arrived at San Diego in 1997, he was moved around the parks going to San Antonio in 2005 and back again to San Diego. As you can see from the video here, Seaworld says he has to establish himself as the top bull with 10 year old Aurek, which is a direct contradiction to the statement given to the press ''two animals that were part of a compatible social group''!!
Have Whisper who sadly lost 2 of Nanuq's babies being pregnant at 7 and again by AI at 9.
They also have Klondike who was taken from his mother at Marineland Canada aged 4, Aurek who was taken the same way aged 3 and Maple who was also taken the same way aged 3. They had only Whisper left after 3 deaths which is probably why they acquired more.
San Antonio had 28 Belugas, they have 10 left.
The Beluga breeding programme at Seaworld is shocking, of all the Belugas that have lived and died in the park only 9 babies have survived and they have held Belugas since 1975, 40 years to produce 9 living babies at the expense of all those dead.

A beluga whale who was on loan to under-fire SeaWorld has died after fracturing his jaw during an 'interaction' with two other whales and later contracting an infection
entertained millions of visitors at the firm's Orlando
theme park while on a long-term breeding loan from Canada's Vancouver Aquarium
But during a recent encounter with two of the three beluga whales he lived with
the 2200lbs marine creature suffered a fractured jaw
He later developed an infection and passed away on Thursday
Although Nanuq had been undergoing treatment for the infection at the time of his death
a post-mortem examination has been arranged to confirm the cause
It comes just a month after SeaWorld's chief executive resigned following low visitor numbers in the wake of the 2013 documentary Blackfish
which criticized the firm's treatment of killer whales
who had served as CEO and president since 2009
stepped down in January amid accusations that the company's treatment of killer whales may have led to the deaths of trainers
who was a hit with a number of celebrity visitors to the attraction
including actor Will Ferrell and actresses Isla Fisher and Sarah Michelle Gellar
please join us in remembering one of our favorite beluga whales
[he] passed away yesterday at the estimated age of 31-32
he has delighted millions of visitors to our Wild Arctic attraction
and has been part of the SeaWorld family since 1997
'Nanuq was a wonderful whale and dearly loved by his trainers and our vets
added that the whale's fractured jaw 'resulted from an interaction between two animals that were part of a compatible social group'
During his time at SeaWorld Orlando (and earlier
Nanuq interacted with members of the public as part of an $119-plus scheme called the 'Beluga Interaction Program'
the park says the 'intimate' program offers visitors 'a rare and wonderful opportunity to learn more about the amazing Arctic and connect with one of its most charming inhabitants'
a University of South Carolina assistant hospitality professor
said Nanuq's death could be potentially damaging to SeaWorld following the release of Blackfish
'It really is one of the worst times this kind of news could come out,' he said
it probably wouldn’t even make a blip on the radar
Longtime SeaWorld critic and Animal Welfare Institute marine mammal scientist Naomi Rose added that in the wild
suffering a broken jaw from an 'interaction' with another animal seems unlikely
Speaking to the Orlando Sentinel, Ms Rose said: 'If he died because of something related to that infection he got related to the broken jaw, then he died of being in captivity.'
Blackfish, which implied that the stress of life in captivity may have been responsible of an orca's killing of Orlando trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010, sparked widespread criticism of SeaWorld,
Since its release, attendance has declined at the company's parks in Orlando, San Diego, California and San Antonio, Texas. SeaWorld's stock value has also plummeted.
To counter the backlash, the firm, which has participated in animal rescue programs for more than 50 years, has announced plans to nearly double the size of its orca enclosures in upcoming years.
SeaWorld has not yet named a replacement for Mr Atchison.

Owner of Rankin Inlet’s Nanuq Lodge wants to downsize
The 10-year-old Nanuq Lodge in Rankin Inlet has been deemed surplus by owner John Hickes
Rankin Inlet South MLA Alex Sammurtok thinks it could be retrofitted for a much-needed seniors facility
is pushing for an elder’s care facility in his home community and he’s suggesting the Nanuq Lodge bed and breakfast might fit the bill nicely
Sammurtok tabled documents in the Nunavut Legislature Oct
25 showing a commercial appraisal that lodge owner John Hickes obtained for the building in July 2015
Sammurtok said that he has been “urging the government to consider all options for establishing an elder’s facility in the community of Rankin Inlet
“I encourage the government to review these documents with care as I am sure they will agree that this building would be ideal to convert into an elder’s facility.”
owned and run by Hickes and his partner Page Burt
he’s keen to cut back on his workload
Hickes—born in an snow house before Rankin Inlet even existed back in 1944 and a three-time mayor of the hamlet—runs an outfitting business along with the Nanuq Lodge and the newer, 20-unit Executive Suites, built three years ago.
Hickes said there’s an obvious need for an elders centre in Rankin Inlet, so when Sammurtok approached him a while back asking if Hickes knew of any surplus buildings, Hickes said he did.
“We said you know, we’re trying to downsize and get easier in our lifestyle so we said yes, this is surplus. And when he said they’re looking for something for the elders, I am an elder, so I wanted to support the elders any way I could,” he said.
Hickes told Nunatsiaq News he could probably just sell the building—which, according to the appraisal is worth about $1.2 million—but selling it wouldn’t guarantee it would be used for the elders.
Hickes told Sammurtok that the Government of Nunavut could retrofit the lodge with the necessary safety and mobility features required for an elders centre and then lease it from him instead of buying it.
“Alex [Sammurtok] has been working on this quite extensively for some time. He was part of council so he knows what the community needs… but unfortunately, because of resources available to the territory, you can’t build a 50-unit facility. We just don’t have the capital currently,” Hickes said.
“But we have maintenance and repair budgets, I’m sure. And leases are quite easy to draft up.”
Hickes is uncle to George Hickes, Nunavut MLA for Iqaluit-Tasiluk and also Nunavut’s health minister, so the Nanuq Lodge owner is aware of a potential conflict of interest.
He said he’ll leave it up to Sammurtok to put forward the idea and then let the GN decide how to handle the issue free from conflict.
According to the appraisal, signed by Lauchlin R. MacDonald of Stewart, Weir, MacDonald Ltd. of Yellowknife, the Nanuq Lodge currently has an average occupancy rate of 75 per cent year over year.
A statement of income and expenses submitted with the appraisal shows a net income of $15,008 in 2011 and a net loss of $18,203 in 2012.
“One of the negative things of a mining company coming into an area and bringing dollars and Rankin being centrally located in Nunavut is that we got too busy,” Hickes said.
“Everybody thought ‘we need to build to meet the demand,’ and what happened is that we over-built. We’re probably 60 or 70 beds over built for the needs of our community at this juncture.”
Built in 2004-2005, the two-storey Nanuq Lodge has, on the main floor, a registration desk, one guest room with bath and a roomy two-bedroom apartment and office occupied by Hickes and Burt.
Hickes said he is currently building a new house so he won’t need that apartment anymore.
The lodge’s upstairs currently has a breakfast room, meeting room, laundry room and eight guest rooms, each with their own bathroom.
The appraiser says in its current state, and with regular maintenance, Nanuq Lodge has a projected lifespan of another 55 years.
