As Brazil sets the legal basis for its carbon trade
environmentalists are doubtful on whether it will be able to lower the country's emissions — the sixth largest in the world according to the EU Emissions Database
The rules do not put a limit on emissions from farming
the country's top carbon polluting sector
which accounts for about 74% of the country's emissions.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
"We've missed the opportunity to bring agribusiness to a regulated sphere
but also promotes sustainability," said Gabriela Savian
deputy director of public policy at the Amazon Environmental Research Institute
only about 16% of the country's emissions are expected to be covered by Brazil's budding cap-and-trade carbon market
But even though it leaves the country's largest emitters off the hook
the regulation is expected to bring legal security and foster carbon projects that protect the forest against pressure from the agribusiness sector
governments ascribe each sector of the economy a cap to carbon emissions
and companies that exceed that limit can buy allowances from others that still have headroom
the largest cap-and-trade system in value in the world
which had its basic carbon market rules signed into law in December
Data from the country's Climate Observatory shows that most of its emissions come from its 240 million strong cattle herd and destruction of its vast natural areas
mostly to make room for pasture and grain fields
Farming was left without a cap in response to a demand from leaders of the country's powerful agribusiness caucus
the dominant force in Brazil's congress
Their argument was that most cap-and-trade markets do not establish a cap to agriculture
as counting emissions from producers is a technical challenge
something critics said researchers could overcome
"No country in the world has regulation over the farming sector due to lack of scientifically proven metric" to their emissions
president of Brazil's Parliamentary Agricultural Front
As part of their effort to lower emissions
big polluters are expected to become a larger source of funding for forest protection initiatives
which could help ease the pressure from farms
"Even though there is not a cap to the great emitter
which is deforestation," the cap-and-trade system "structures the possibility to fund schemes ..
that fight deforestation and promote regeneration," she said
There is a growing number of companies and state governments sourcing carbon credits from forest conservation and recovery projects in Brazil
which now runs 11 projects in partnership with farmers and communities
sourcing carbon from 322,000 hectares of forests
Those offsets are currently sold in the voluntary carbon market to companies that wish to compensate for emissions even without any legal requirements to do so
expects to be able to sell credits to help companies comply with the regulated cap-and-trade market in the future
providing a non-destructive income alternative for the Amazon
In addition to communities and private owners
have been making strides in the carbon market
announcing plans to sell more than $600 million of jurisdictional offset credits
This class of offsets is sourced by governments that succeed in reducing deforestation or capture carbon within their jurisdictions
As they reward state policies that stem deforestation
assets are shielded from the land tenure issues that have hurt the reputation of private projects in Brazil
that have been shown to operate on disputed land
Those credits are calculated based on each jurisdiction's success in lowering their deforestation rates
whereas private projects have often been accused of sourcing excessive credits by inflating the risk of deforestation in the areas where they intervene
The law allows offsets from the voluntary carbon market to be converted into assets that other countries could buy to achieve climate targets
secretary for environment and sustainability in the state of Para
Last year's COP climate summit set the basis for a United Nations overseen international carbon market
raising expectations for this type of global cooperation
The recent national and international rules "will make it possible for Para to sell credits for Switzerland" to help protect the Amazon as it pursues its national targets
"It will be the most premium type of credit in existence."

Illinois - U.S.-China Trade War 2.0 is heating up and soybeans
But the soybean battle may be lackluster right now because of how little trade is done at this time of year and how few U.S
cargoes are left to ship to China this season
It is well known that China in recent years has reduced reliance on U.S
beans while leaning more heavily into the Brazilian market
tariff onslaught – and China’s retaliatory response – come nearly seven years to the day that Beijing first announced intended measures against U.S
as all analysis indicated no possible path for China to avoid importing U.S
Beijing for a time was able to shun the American oilseed to a much larger degree than expected based on a one-off
catastrophic spread of disease throughout its hog herd
data suggests that China should still need some degree of U.S
But don’t expect those purchases to show up anytime soon
China had purchased 22.12 million metric tons of U.S
That is a 12-year low for the date aside from the first two trade-war years
China accounts for 48% of total soybean sales so far
Only about 600,000 tons of China’s 2024-25 U.S
bean commitments were unshipped as of March 27
representing above-average export progress
Department of Agriculture data on Monday showed another 341,000 tons of U.S
beans inspected for export to China in the week ended April 3
This means only a handful of cargoes are left to ship
reducing the risk that China cancels orders
But 2 million tons of unshipped beans booked to unknown destinations remained on the books as of March 27
While that is an average volume when compared with overall sales
it leaves room for potential Chinese cancellations
There is no risk of China terminating 2025-26 contracts since there are none in existence
and a similarly delayed onset this year would not be surprising
No one knew that African swine fever could allow China to shut out U.S
both China and Brazil have respectively imported and exported roughly 100 million tons of soybeans per year
Brazil could almost fully cover China’s annual needs
and its soybean supplies are usually thin in the months leading up to harvest
as lower moisture levels allow for better storage
China was the destination for 73% of Brazilian soybean shipments in 2024
That compares with 75% in 2013 and a 75% average ever since
This suggests it is highly unlikely that Brazil would suddenly shift all its bean business exclusively to China
if Brazil’s crop continues to expand faster than Chinese demand
China would be able to continue slowly phasing out U.S
While China is likely to remain the top destination for U.S
market participants have learned after the first trade war that when it comes to China

A drought-hit cornfield at Nao-Me-Toque in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state on Jan
MarketsFarm — Over the last three to four weeks growing conditions in Brazil have pulled a complete reversal — and that poses a serious threat to the country’s corn crop
Michael Cordonnier of Soybean and Corn Advisor Inc
The southern half of the country is now faced with wet conditions
while the north is forced to contend with widespread dryness
“The Brazil national weather service today declared that the dry season has started
There are areas of central Brazil that have been dry for 20 to 30 days
some even longer than that,” Cordonnier said Monday from his Hinsdale
Chicago cattle futures gained fresh highs on Monday while lean hog futures slumped
He estimated about 30 to 40 per cent of Brazil’s safrinha (or second) corn crop is at various stages of dryness
he said it has been “disappointing from the get-go and isn’t going to change much going forward” being 85 to 90 per cent harvested
Cordonnier pointed to the growing threat of frost
He said there have been three overnight frosts so far in the higher elevations of southern Brazil
the possibility is a frost could impact the safrinha corn,” Cordonnier warned
noting such a situation occurred last year
In CONAB’s monthly outlook released April 7
the agency pegged total corn production in Brazil at 115.6 million tonnes
for a 2.9 per cent increase from its March report
in supply and demand estimates issued by the U.S
it estimated total Brazil corn production at 116 million tonnes
That was a 1.75 per cent increase from its March report
With the reversal of conditions in Brazil and cold
Cordonnier said there could be a lot of movement in the commodities market
could make the markets more volatile,” he said

The extent of the Russian invasion’s impact of on Ukraine’s corn production and exports continues to remain uncertain
Already tight global corn stocks could become even tighter in 2022 as traders contemplate the impact of reduced exports from Ukraine and continued dryness in parts of South America
analysts said dry weather and poor soil moisture in southern Brazil and parts of Argentina could have a significant impact on second crop (safrinha) corn yields
Although it is still early in the safrinha production cycle
soil moisture reserves in key production areas of Brazil are extremely low or non-existent
Grain and oilseed millers are predicted to see sales
volumes and margins decline in 2025 according to Farm Credit Canada’s food and beverage report
Brazil’s southern production regions of Mato Grosso do Sul
those three regions typically account for about 30 percent of Brazil’s safrinha crop
Whelan said soil moisture conditions in central-west and southeastern Brazil have improved significantly since last October
“We’re at over five-year highs regarding soil moisture (in those areas)… but it’s really the opposite in southern Brazil,” he said
“you see dryness really persisting from October through now.”
Refinitiv is projecting Argentina’s total 2021-22 corn production at about 49 million U.S
Department of Agriculture’s estimate of 54 million
Brazilian production is estimated at 108 million tons
about six million tons below USDA projections
said growers in many parts of Brazil and Argentina have experienced extreme weather conditions over the past few months
ranging from severe drought in some areas to widespread flooding in others
“The question is of course how much impact will this have on yields,” Soon Choi said
Satellite vegetation (NDVI) indices showed nearly record-low levels of vegetative growth across key regions of northern Argentina in mid-January
Rainfall in late January briefly contributed to more favourable soil moisture conditions but field conditions have been deteriorating over the past month or so
South American plantings of second season corn were on pace across much of Brazil
Safrinha corn crops are planted after the South American soybean harvest is complete
“The second crop corn is largely progressing on schedule as well without any major delays (but) the season has really just started so there are still a lot of uncertainties there …,” Soon Choi said
The planting window for second season corn is narrow and untimely rains can disrupt planting efforts as well as the entire production cycle
“Those things definitely warrant attention.”
Global corn markets have been watching South America closely
especially since Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine in late February
Ukraine exported more than 33 million tonnes of corn
making it one of the largest corn exporters in the world
the United States exported about 67 million tonnes of corn in 2021-22
Brazil exported nearly 38 million tonnes and Argentina exported 29 million tonnes
It remains to be seen how Ukraine’s corn production and exports will be impacted by Russia’s military invasion
The invasion has already prompted global grain-handling companies to suspend export operations in Ukraine and there is growing uncertainty about whether Ukrainian producers will be able to plant a crop this season
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the war in Ukraine will put global grain exports at risk
the availability of fertilizers and other farm inputs will be uncertain
potentially leading to reduced production on a global scale
for the impact of all of this to be understood and felt,” Vilsack told reporters
“I sincerely hope that no company out there — whether it’s fertilizer or any other supply that may be impacted by this — will take unfair advantage of the circumstances and situation,” he added
A number of global grain companies have export operations in Ukraine
Bunge and ADM confirmed that they would suspend operations in Ukraine
Bunge has more than 1,000 employees in Ukraine
working primarily at processing facilities and a grain terminal in the port city of Odessa
ADM operates a network of country elevators as well as an export terminal in Odessa
Ukraine ranks fourth in the world in terms of exports of corn and wheat and is the world’s largest exporter of sunflower oil
Although Ukraine produced a large corn crop last year
export activity has been disrupted leaving buyers around the world looking elsewhere for supplies
Compounding concerns over the availability of Ukrainian corn is the fact that Chinese demand for foreign corn has been increasing considerably
in step with the rapid expansion of the Chinese hog herd
the USDA revised its forecast for Chinese pork production
suggesting annual production could reach 49.5 million tonnes
up 13 percent from the previous USDA estimate
Refinitiv market analyst Orlando Rodriguez said Brazilian corn exports in 2020-21 were at the lowest level in five years
Argentinian exports were also expected to fall to below the previous three-year average
corn exports to China are expected to increase in response for reduced trade flows from other major corn-producing nations
“The Chinese demand is a major impact in the global corn market,” Rodriguez said
“China is not going to be able to import as much corn from South America (and)… China has been buying a lot of corn from Ukraine

Brazil’s public prosecutor’s office saw a surge in sexual harassment charges last year
as more women are taking steps to stop inappropriate behaviour in the workplace
a video from the country’s Ministry of Labour warns about the forms such behaviour can take
(You can watch the video at the end of this story.)YouTube
When the mayor of a southern Brazilian city called Nao-me-Toque (which translates
offered a female city-hall employee a promotion last year
There had to be an “encounter” at his house
on an afternoon when he would tell his maid to skip work
“It has to be next week – before you can start the job,” Armando Ross said
Ross for sexual harassment – which is a crime in Brazil punished by up to two years in jail – after the woman
apparently emboldened by a new public conversation about harassment
origins last year to become a global phenomenon
but it has taken different forms in other countries
Women in Brazil seized the initial moment to make clear that they
were fed up with being groped at the office or offered opportunities in exchange for sex – and with the culture of impunity that so often accompanies these experiences
Forty-two per cent of women said in a 2017 national survey by the research institute Datafolha that they had experienced sexual harassment
But there was a rapid backlash to #MeToo here as well
with the argument that the anti-harassment movement wanted Brazilians to stop being
Brazilian – to stifle the famously warm and affectionate quality that characterizes many interactions here
When the national news magazine Veja did a cover story on changing norms around harassment a few months ago
not any more” over photos and text that were decidedly wistful for the more pleasant office of yore
The article said that “new standards demanded by feminists” were obliging offices to phase out “normal interactions” between men and women such as “giving a colleague a ride
The article was emblematic of the complicated way this debate is unfolding here
There are activities considered perfectly normal in a Brazilian workplace – many people kiss hello
at the start of the day in the office; even the most professional of e-mails will be signed um abraco
the short form for “kisses”; and there is lots of banter about personal lives – that might seem startling in a Canadian context
“We are very informal and very relational – we touch each other a lot,” said Silvana Andrade
a Rio professor of human-resource management who gives sexual-harassment training
who studies workplace culture and teaches in the MBA program at Estacio de Sa University in Rio
there’s a greater closeness – it’s a characteristic of our culture
“But everyone knows when this is affectionate and when it is a violation – when it is against my will … We know how to differentiate between a kiss and a hug and a little joke – and the jokes that are really not a joke
You know when it’s made as a joke but it’s actually a reality.”

In a long career in the technology industry
where she was often the only woman in the room
Bon said she navigated dozens of situations with men who commented on her appearance
let their hands linger or used a pet name while asking her to please get everyone coffee – although she was one of the most senior employees present
“I acted like I was deaf – because at that time you didn’t have any channel to protest,” she said
it’s the same problem: As the whistleblower – you’re the person who creates problems.” Lower-income women can’t risk the paycheque by speaking up
while senior women don’t want to risk a career
“Women become furious but they don’t talk.”
The public prosecutor’s office focused on labour issues reported a surge in sexual-harassment charges last year
Opinion: Is #MeToo worsening the divide between men and women?
Opinion: The #MeToo generation gap

Andrade attributes the increase to #MeToo and said she is optimistic
because the public conversation about the issue is more vibrant than ever before and because young women are much more insistent about what they will not tolerate
Most large companies now have an ombudsperson as a central point for complaints
and women have another tool at their disposal
“Social media gives you a place to go and complain instantly,” she said
“A company can’t risk that impact on their reputation.”
a Sao Paulo firm that manages outsourced whistleblower lines
said there is a rapidly changing understanding of what is acceptable workplace behaviour
“There is more information being provided by the media and also by the companies themselves … Consent about what’s allowed is being formalized internally,” he said
“Companies are responding faster than they used to before the Hollywood scandal – top management … doesn’t want theirs to be the company that appears in the media as the one that allows sexual harassment or doesn’t punish harassers
They are getting a better understanding of the real impact this can have on the bottom line of a company.”
Andrade said she has tried and failed for years to get the annual national congress of human-resource professionals (which is heavily dominated by women) to hold seminars on the issue
And when participation at training sessions she runs on harassment and inclusion is not made mandatory
then invariably she finds herself in a room containing only women
Brazilian sports reporter Bruna Dealtry was broadcasting live from a soccer victory party when a man tried to kiss her on camera
The incident was the catalyst for an anti-harassment campaign called #DeixaElaTrabalhar

says it’s clear more women are reporting harassment
but the situation breaks down precisely where Ms
