A study by the Osvaldo Cruz Foundation from Rio de Janeiro found that in countries such as the United States and Great Britain, as many as one in seven death could attribute feed with a lot of industrial food
Researchers compared data from eight countries, particularly on nutrition and mortality, reports Deutsche Welle (DW)
a clear connection - the more calories consumed through industrial food
a nutritionist-epidemiologist from this foundation
told DW that previous research was too narrow because they looked at certain foods
"We need to look at the matrix of the whole diet," he states
work is already being done to promote a healthier diet
The University of São Paulo divided the food into four groups
The third group includes canned fruits and vegetables
is everything that is made industrially with derivatives of fats
That "infamous" group automatically includes chocolates
Over-processed food is often called "junk food" in slang
and everyone knows that you shouldn't overdo it
These foods are linked to 32 diseases or health effects
from obesity to diabetes and heart disease
Of the eight countries compared by Brazilian scientists
precisely those in Latin America have the lowest share of over-processed food in the population's diet
At the opposite pole are the Anglo-Saxon countries - Australia
"It's no surprise that countries with a more developed food culture are more resistant to ultra-processed foods and have maintained healthier habits," Nilsson tells us
it's not easy - and often not cheap - to always eat healthy
Nielson and his group of researchers are therefore advocating that things be reversed
sugary foods and drinks are taxed more heavily
we introduced a zero tax rate on fresh or minimally processed food," he says
Farmers are encouraged to grow a variety of crops
Organic production is included in the delivery of meals for school canteens
"All countries should do the same because the evidence is very convincing," says the Brazilian scientist
The American National Institute of Health is also dealing with the impact of too much processed food
Faced with a possible policy change and criticism
some manufacturers are phasing out synthetic dyes and other additives themselves
The US Food and Drug Administration last week urged manufacturers to "replace petrochemical dyes with natural ingredients for the benefit of American children
just as is already being done in Europe and Canada."
This is in line with the policy announced by US Health Secretary Robert F
General Mills tried to switch to natural colors in its breakfast cereal
but went back to artificial colors - due to customer protests
announced that they would remove some synthetic additives from their products
Serbian students repeated a hundred times that this is a marathon
Similar to Adam Mihnjik in the eighties in Poland
The government in Serbia is on the way to the end - you just need to be patient
With the inclusivity created at the plenums
students should continue during election engagement
including the opposition at some point - whatever it may be
Who mentions the extraordinary elections when the rating of the party in power is falling
Vučić is not the most important political factor in the country

The health impacts to traditional communities in the Amazon are also impacting nature
it’s become clear the virus impacts are not spread proportionately
A report by the Osvaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) and the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) found that 34.1 percent of Brazil's Indigenous and traditional communities live in municipalities at high risk for the COVID-19 epidemic
According to information provided by the Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB)
there had been 6,482 infections and 337 deaths
spread across at least 91 Indigenous communities in the nine states of Brazil’s Legal Amazon
Among Quilombola communities—the Afro-Brazilian descendants of former runaway slaves—there have been 826 identified cases and 86 deaths since June 22
according to the National Coordination of Articulating Rural Black Quilombola Communities (CONAQ)
These disparate impacts represent both a human rights tragedy and a serious threat to the environment
Indigenous peoples play a strategic role in combating climate change and protecting biodiversity in the Amazon
it is clear that Indigenous lands are the best preserved areas of the biome
According to data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE)
the 23 percent of the Amazon territory formed by Indigenous lands has the lowest deforestation rate of any land tenure category in the region
In addition to serious consequences for community health
COVID-19 could have a major impact on the conservation and protection of Indigenous territories
deforestation has increased again in the Amazon
over 42,000 hectares were deforested within Indigenous lands
Although this represents only 5 percent of the total recorded deforestation during this period
it is a sign of increased pressure from illegal activities such as mining and logging
their cultures and the biodiversity they protect
In a moment of crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic
Indigenous populations are even more vulnerable in the face of these incursions
since outsiders have historically been a major vector of disease transmission
travel restrictions exacerbate impacts to food security and the economy of many communities
And with decreased support for surveillance
Indigenous lands and protected areas are at even greater risk than usual
All this in turn can endanger the socio-biodiversity of their territories
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is working to support Indigenous communities in the Amazon in protecting forests and socio-biodiversity on their lands throughout the pandemic
We are particularly focused on strengthening environmental management and territorial development as well as supporting local organizations
This objective entails three main actions:
We know that there is a clear link between environmental conservation and the well-being of local stewards
A threat to their fundamental rights directly impacts not only the immediate surroundings
but the interconnected systems that we all need to survive
Especially at a time like this it is essential that all societies and governments prioritize the well-being and health of these communities—for their sake and that of the entire planet
The man accused of fatally shooting a local high school teacher outside his North Park home last year allegedly asked during a firearms class how to kill people
was back in court on Wednesday for a preliminary hearing for his alleged role in the killing of Cathedral Catholic High School (CCHS) teacher Mario Fierro
Alvarez was ordered to stand trial and will appear in court again later this month
More on the North Park shooting of the local teacher
Get top local San Diego stories delivered to you every morning with our News Headlines newsletter
Two witnesses recounted encounters with the defendant
an investigator for the San Diego District Attorney's Office
testified that staff from the Poway Weapons & Gear Range reported the defendant asked disturbing questions during a firearms class
Cruz testified Alvarez asked where the "best place to shoot someone to kill them" was
"what about the back of the head?" An instructor at the range told the investigator those questions stood out to him since they teach participants how to defend themselves
Alvarez took classes weeks before Fierro's slaying
The defendant pleaded not guilty last year to first-degree murder charges in connection with Fierro's death
The victim was found shot on the morning of Feb
San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Officer Scott Lockwood said the shooting suspect fled the scene
Emergency responders tried to revive the 37-year-old teacher
According to Deputy District Attorney Ramona McCarthy
Alvarez dressed in all black clothing the day of the shooting
She added the defendant waited outside Fierro’s home for about an hour for the victim to go outside and then shot him multiple times before running away
Attorneys for Alvarez asked the judge to drop a special circumstance attached to Alvarez's murder charge accusing him of lying in wait
saying evidence went "beyond premeditation."
Alvarez was arrested the night of the shooting in Serra Mesa after investigators reviewed footage from at least two home security cameras in the area
Police believe the violence stemmed from an argument between the defendant and victim since Fierro was engaged to Alvarez’s ex-girlfriend
The woman also testified in court on Wednesday and told the judge that Alvarez made her fear for her safety
She testified he would not leave her alone after the two broke up and claimed the defendant tried to break into her home
She added Alvarez even got a job at CCHS' cafeteria to be closer to the victim
Once school administration realized who he was
The witness concluded that her relationship with Fierro was “one of the most genuine
loving relationships I’ve been in my entire life.”
she claimed the defendant stalked her in person
cyberstalked her and was emotionally abusive and controlling during their relationship
Fierro’s killing devastated the CCHS community
who fondly remembered the teacher as “ young
He was a fantastic teacher and a great human being," said a letter sent to parents and staff the day he was killed
Alvarez faces a first-degree murder charge in the case
A court officer told NBC 7 an additional witness will testify Thursday morning

The spread of dengue and other arboviruses constitutes an expanding global health threat
The extensive heterogeneity in population distribution and potential complexity of movement in megacities of low and middle-income countries challenges predictive modeling
even as its importance to disease spread is clearer than ever
Using surveillance data at fine resolution following the emergence of the DENV4 dengue serotype in Rio de Janeiro
we document a pattern in the size of successive epidemics that is invariant to the scale of spatial aggregation
This pattern emerges from the combined effect of herd immunity and seasonal transmission
and is strongly driven by variation in population density at sub-kilometer scales
It is apparent only when the landscape is stratified by population density and not by spatial proximity as has been common practice
Models that exploit this emergent simplicity should afford improved predictions of the local size of successive epidemic waves
It remains unclear at what scales aggregation of data is appropriate and how best to manage the trade-off between model fidelity and computational expense in the parameterization of movement
C Examples of three different possible patterns for the relative size of the peaks and therefore
for DENV4 incidence in three of the 10 administrative regions shown in the upper map in (B)
The colors indicate the corresponding regions in this map
A The temporal incidence of a unit is shaped by human density directly
but also indirectly via the arrival time of the first imported infection (the y-axis is normalized by the maximum value of cases for better visualization)
The temporal dynamics are simulated with a deterministic SIR model with a seasonal transmission rate
the size of the second peak increases with the population density of the unit (top to bottom)
The earlier the first infection reaches the unit
the smaller the size of the second peak (left to right)
denser units are infected earlier (data: black circles)
The blue triangles are used as input to the model to specify arrival time and therefore initial conditions in a given unit (with an exponential decay curve capturing the observed trend)
The earlier importation of infection in denser units implies two opposite effects of population density on relative peak size (demonstrated in A)
C For arrival times similar to those observed in the data
the model simulations (blue triangles) can capture the observed behavior (black circles) of the peak ratio with human density
The results correspond to a partition of the city into 12 groups according to population density
To verify that our hypothesized effects are robust
we therefore consider a more realistic model that takes demographic stochasticity into account
we introduce the empirical rate of infection importation to a local unit \({{\sigma }_{u}}^{{emp}}\)
which allows us to sidestep the explicit coupling between the units
the spark rate and its estimation do not explicitly consider the source units from which infections are imported (“Methods”)
A stochastic SIR model under well-mixed conditions applies within each unit
which allows for local extinction of infection and for the spark rate to re-initiate transmission
The initial conditions are self-contained in the model through the arrival of the first infection to a given unit
for each unit u the transmission rate is modeled as \(\beta {S}_{u}{I}_{u}/{N}_{u}+{\sigma }_{u}\)
where \(\beta\) is the local transmission rate
and \({\sigma }_{u}\) is the spark rate per unit
To take into account that we are working from observed cases
we consider a reporting rate \(\rho \in (0,1]\) and compute the spark rate as \({\sigma }_{u}={{{{{{\mathrm{Poisson}}}}}}}({{\sigma }_{u}}^{{emp}}/\rho )\)
A Mean observed arrival time as a function of human density
The original units are binned into 100 groups and arrival times are averaged for the units belonging to the same group
The arrival times computed from the data (black circles) are compared to those obtained in model simulations (with dots colored by reporting rate)
B Peak ratio obtained in the simulations as a function of population density for the different reporting rates where the colors correspond to those in (A)
The boxplots are computed from 20 stochastic realizations (in these
the median with the 25th and 75th percentiles
and the dotted lines indicate the extremes of the distribution)
the empirical values of peak ratio are also shown (in black
C Spark rate as a function of total incidence (CTot)
The logarithm of the number of sparks (or number of imported infections) per month per unit exhibits a linear relationship with the logarithm of the total number of cases in the city
The more populated units receive a higher number of sparks as expected in a pattern that is well approximated by a power law
D The parameters of the power relationship between spark rate and total incidence vary as a function of population density
The different slopes (m) and intercept (b) from a linear regression to the log–log plot are shown in (C) as a function of the logarithm of population density
importation rate to a unit exhibits both a global and a local determinant
namely the total number of cases in the city and the local population in a given unit
These dependencies allow the specification of infection importation via a mean-field coupling and local conditions
circumventing the need to explicitly describe spatial connectivity at fine scales
These determinants of spark rate reinforce the important role of population density in the behavior of peak ratio
They also provide a handle to potentially reduce the complexity of the infection importation process
Our results demonstrate that human density is a dominant driver of dengue dynamics at fine spatial scales comparable in size to city block and census tract
This effect scales up to explain the relative size of successive epidemic waves
a major epidemiological feature reflecting the interplay of seasonality with the depletion of susceptible individuals and the build-up of herd immunity
this fundamental aspect of the dynamics of an immunizing infection is affected by variation in population density at fine spatial scales
this does not mean that spatial aggregation or coarse graining of the landscape is not plausible
We find that the pattern of peak ratio with density is invariant to the number of spatial groupings over an order of magnitude
as long as coarser spatial partitions follow aggregation according to density itself
and not the traditional subdivision of administrative units based on typical contiguous space
efforts to model dengue and possibly other infectious diseases in urban landscapes should consider the nature of aggregation space and not just its spatial resolution
administrative regions may better reflect similar environmental conditions such as temperature and socio-economic status influencing transmission intensity according to standard geography
the new partition we propose should by definition better capture human density and its effects on key aspects of dengue transmission such as infection spread and availability of susceptible individuals
Consideration of these different organizations of space can help identify and disentangle the effect of disease drivers
given that variation in incidence within the city occurs along both aggregation axes but for different sets of factors
we have explicitly described this structure through its effects for dengue
The dependence of this timing on human density was successfully captured here by a stochastic model in which there is no explicit description of the spatial coupling between local units
the link between units is implicit in our model
via “sparks” arriving from unspecified locations from a global pool of city-wide infections
Up to 10% protection would still be consistent with our results and could account for cross-protection from another serotype from previous seasons
The patterns we have uncovered are for a city with intermittent seasonal epidemics. They raise the question of whether similar patterns arise in more endemic but still seasonal dengue regions. Exploratory analyses of a dengue dataset from Delhi suggests similar trends in peak ratio with population density (Supplementary Fig. 15)
high-resolution surveillance in such regions
including serotype assignment of the reported cases
would be valuable to examine the robustness of our findings across the geographical distribution of the disease and in the presence of co-circulating serotypes
We have considered here frequency-dependent transmission because of its relevance to vector-transmitted diseases and many directly-transmitted ones
Future work should examine whether similar results hold for density-dependent transmission
our modeling of the spark process reveals that the effective result can be described in some systems in terms of two accessible quantities
namely the total number of cases in the city and the local human density
This finding suggests a novel formulation of metapopulation dynamics in urban environments that should be explored in future work
where space is aggregated according to population density and the coupling occurs through a global incidence pool
Whether the complexity of human movement and resulting connectivity patterns can be captured in such a practical way in spatially explicit models of dengue and perhaps other infections remains an open question
This formulation combined with the sufficiently coarse partitions suggested by the scale-independent pattern we uncovered
provides an alternative to the intractable high-dimensional systems needed to resolve population density heterogeneity when modeling cities and geographical regions
We created a grid whose units measure 250 m by 250 m based on the census tract layer for the city of Rio de Janeiro from the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística [Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics] (IBGE) website https://www.ibge.gov.br/geociencias/organizacao-do-territorio/malhas-territoriais
Dengue is a disease of compulsory notification in Brazil
and cases are notified at the Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação [Information System on Diseases of Compulsory Declaration] (SINAN)
Dengue cases notified in Rio de Janeiro between January 2010 and March 2015 were geocoded according to address of residency
and then counted for each grid unit by the Secretariat of Health of the city
We obtained the monthly dengue cases data aggregated at the grid level
We chose the WorldPop dataset because: (i) the estimates are also calculated based on census data and are available for 2010
we binned them into G groups and aggregated their times series of reported cases
The groups were generated according to two aspects: (1) the geographical location of the units as determined by the administrative divisions of the city (10 areas
and 160 neighborhoods); and (2) the population of the units based on quantiles in order to obtain equal size groups
We considered specifically four different partition levels
respectively (from a total number of 11,247 units for the whole city)
Groups of unequal size can introduce different statistical effects (it is not the same
to calculate a mean value using 1000 or 10 elements)
To compare quantities across groups it is therefore prudent to define groups with the same number of elements
this consideration becomes important for a large number of groups
Since the population density distribution (number of individuals per unit) is not uniform
groups defined with “equidistant” boundaries would exhibit very different numbers of elements
we define its time series \({{{{{{\bf{v}}}}}}}_{{{{{{\bf{u}}}}}}}=\{{c}_{u}({t}_{1}),{c}_{u}({t}_{2}),...,{c}_{u}({t}_{f})\}\)
where \({c}_{u}({t}_{i})\) is the number of reported cases of dengue at time \({t}_{i}\) (i = 1
…f) (and the bold symbol is used to indicate a vector)
for each \({{{{{{\bf{V}}}}}}}_{{{{{{\bf{g}}}}}}}\) we computed the ratio between the sizes of the second and first DENV4 peaks
(Supplementary Fig. 2)
the deterministic SIR model is based on the following traditional differential equations:
Parameter \(\mu\) is the mortality rate (equal to the birth rate)
The seasonal transmission rate is specified as \(\beta (t)={\beta }_{0}(1+\delta {{\sin }}\,(\omega t+\phi ))\)
The units are considered independent of each other
and the initial conditions establish that the whole population of each unit is susceptible to the virus (\({S}_{u}(t=0)={N}_{u}\) and \({I}_{u}\left(t=0\right)={R}_{u}\left(t=0\right)=0\forall u\))
Transmission begins with one infected individual at a time \({t}_{0u}\ge t=0\) where \({t}_{0u}\) is obtained from the data
Since the goal of this model is to examine the representative dynamics of different population densities
we binned the units according to their population into 12 groups
and computed the mean value of their number of inhabitants \({N}_{g}=\langle {N}_{u\in g}\rangle\) and of their arrival times of the infection \({t}_{0g}\sim \langle {t}_{0u\in g}\rangle\) (where g = 1
We then simulated the system considering the 12 sets \(\{{N}_{g},{t}_{0g}\}\) as given
Since units will suffer local extinction of transmission
a major component of a stochastic implementation is the description of the local reintroduction of the virus
namely the arrival of a ‘spark’ or imported infection
Because space is described by a highly-resolved lattice
we considered that well-mixed transmission applies within each unit
in lieu of explicit spatial coupling between units
we postulated the importation of infection through the specification of a spark rate
For this purpose, we constructed a binary representation of the time series of cases per month by defining the spatial units either as positive or negative according to whether they reported cases or not (Supplementary Fig. 3)
to derive a spark rate we explored the dynamics of the number of positive units as follows
The number of positive units at time \({t+dt}\) is equal to the number of positive units at time t
plus the number of units that have been infected \({{U}_{{{{{{{\mathrm{new}}}}}}}}}^{{{\mbox{+}}}}(t,t+{dt})\) between t and t + dt
minus the number of units that were infected at t but are no longer infected at t + dt (i.e.
the number of ‘extinctions’ between t and t + dt
\({{U}_{{{{{{{\mathrm{extinct}}}}}}}}}^{{{\mbox{+}}}}(t,t+{dt})\))
negative units) require the arrival of a spark to become positive
the following equation specifies the mean of \({{U}_{{{{{{{\mathrm{new}}}}}}}}}^{{{\mbox{+}}}}(t,t+{dt})\) under the assumption that a small unit is unlikely to receive more than a single spark in a period of time dt
where \({N}_{{{{{{{\mathrm{sparks}}}}}}}}(t,t+{dt})\) is the number of sparks produced between t and t + dt
\({U}^{{{{-}}}}(t)\) is the number of negative units at a time t
and \(U\) is the total number of units in the city (\(U={U}^{{{\mbox{+}}}}+{U}^{{{{-}}}}\))
By introducing Eq. (4) into Eq. (3) we obtain
From Eq. (5) we can now compute the spark rate per unit \({{\sigma }_{u}}^{{emp}}(t,t+{dt})\) from the high-resolution incidence data as
In order to address the effects of human density on the spark rate, we binned the spatial units according to their population into G groups. To avoid statistical effects due to group size, we considered population quantiles. Then, by applying Eq. (6) to each of these groups
we obtained an empirical spark rate per unit that depends on human density
where \({N}_{g}={{\langle }}{N}_{u\in g}{{\rangle }}\) with g = 1
The associated differential equations of the stochastic model are those shown on Eq. (2) but the transmission component has now an additional term \({\sigma }_{u}\) to describe the importation of infections
Since the inferred spark rate from the data (Eq. (7)) is obtained from observed infections
we computed the spark rate \({\sigma }_{u}\) as:
We also considered measurement error by assuming that the observed number of cases \({{C}_{u}}^{{obs}}\) during a period of time T is
where \({C}_{u}(T)\) is the number of cases computed in the unit u
We simulated the 11,247 units that compose the city of Rio de Janeiro
and aggregated the resulting time series as for the empirical data (see Peak ratio section)

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooter Nikolas Cruz
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Deputies protecting Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz had to pull him aside and surround him Tuesday after a member of a jury pool mouthed possible threats toward him and caused others to become “excited," leading them to fear a potential brawl
A 70-member pool of potential jurors was filing into the courtroom and taking their seats when one of the first to enter, a man in his 30s, began “mouthing expletives” toward Cruz, Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer said. Cruz, 23, is facing a possible death sentence for murdering 17 at Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb
Bailiffs moved in quickly to remove the man
who shook his head vigorously and muttered “that's horrible” repeatedly as he walked past reporters seated toward the back of the courtroom
several other jurors became “excited” and were saying something that could not be heard
The first man then started looking back over his shoulder toward Cruz
The half-dozen armed deputies who always stand just behind Cruz then grabbed and surrounded him
fearing that the first juror was about to run toward them and would be joined by others
“The sheriff’s office observed all of that and determined they needed to protect Mr
“One instigates and then there are many followers,” explained Broward Sheriff's Capt
told Scherer she understands that the deputies' first priority is to protect Cruz and everyone in the courtroom but didn't realize that would require him being physically moved
But she wondered if the deputies could simply stand between Cruz and the threat if something similar happens again
eight-alternate jury is being selected in a two-month
three-step process to decide whether he receives a death sentence or life in prison without parole
More than 1,800 jurors have come through the courtroom
mostly without incident since the process began April 4
One panel of 60 had to be dismissed on April 12 after eight became obviously emotional upon seeing Cruz
About a dozen others have been quietly removed from various panels because they started crying
The panels are not told they are being brought up as potential Cruz jurors
although it is widely known throughout South Florida that the process has started
the potential jurors are only being asked if they could serve from June through September
Those who can will be brought back next month for further questioning
Tuesday had been a boring, routine day. It was a marked difference from Monday when Scherer announced she was dismissing 250 potential jurors who had passed initial screening because of a possible error she made and starting the selection process over
Two panels of 70 had been brought through with no significant incidents
A few potential jurors had been quietly taken out for crying
But that changed as the first panel after lunch was brought in
With most eyes focused on the jurors filing in
Cruz's attorneys got the attention of the bailiffs
starting the sequence that led to Cruz being pulled aside for protection
the man told deputies that he wasn't trying to cause problems but was emotional and wanted to curse out Cruz
according to a reporter who was in the hallway
Scherer and the attorneys quickly conferred and the judge then dismissed the entire panel
who she said became “belligerent” as they waited for the elevator to take them back to the lobby and "got mouthy" toward deputies
The juror who started it all told the deputies that they — or perhaps the system — had traumatized the potential jurors
Scherer said deputies followed the group out of the courthouse to make sure they didn't say anything to prospective jurors waiting to be brought to her courtroom

- Photo: UELBrazilian researchers have made significant progress in developing a vaccine against swine toxoplasmosis
The team claims it is the first in the world
The medicine uses recombinant proteins, which is a method said to be effective and low risk. According to professor João Luís Garcia of the Department of Preventive Veterinary Medicine at the State University of Londrina
the development is the result of a long research process and gradual advances in knowledge around the globe
the scientists are testing the DNA vaccine against swine toxoplasmosis in mice and the next phase will be the final one: testing in pigs
Toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii and affects several animal species
which can serve as vectors and transmit to humans
both for animals and for the sick human being
toxoplasmosis can leave a series of sequelae
hydrocephalus and mental deficiency,” he explains
gondii was isolated for the first time in 1908
practically at the same time by French researchers in Tunisia and Brazilian researchers in São Paulo
this was still the epidemiological picture of the disease
about 4 out of 10 pigs in Brazil were contaminated with toxoplasmosis oocysts (eggs) and there was no vaccine
investment was made in education and other forms of prevention
tips on how to cook meat before eating it were disseminated and are still valid today
only 4 out of 100 pigs carry some form of contamination
considering that a single individual can carry millions of oocysts
there is still sufficient reason to be alert
pork is the most consumed meat in the world
and data from the Osvaldo Cruz Foundation state that about a third of the world’s human population is affected by the disease
was that they used live micro-organisms capable of infecting
In 1999, the first of many publications in the international journal Veterinary Parasitology initiated a series of advances in the researcher’s investigation
a vaccine against ovine and caprine toxoplasmosis
the United Kingdom stimulated new studies for a vaccine that was not administered through the nose
a new research was published on a vaccine for rectal application in cats
also using a recombinant protein technology
There have also been studies with viral vaccines
It is unclear when the vaccine will be available for commercial use
the Story of the Goal Scorer Who Conquered the Copa LibertadoresAt 23 years old
Júnior Santos heard a prophecy at church that would change his life: one day he would travel the world playing football
his life was very different: he worked as a bricklayer
and played football in lower leagues simply for the joy of it and
But that vision motivated him to make a radical change
leaving his manual labor job behind to pursue his dream
Destiny led him to a fourth-tier Brazilian team
thousands of miles away from his home in São João de Meriti
but his faith and determination kept him moving forward
but each step brought him closer to his dream
He played for several smaller clubs like Ituano and Ponte Preta before reaching the First Division with Fortaleza in 2019
a huge achievement for a player who had barely had a chance in the professional game
playing for teams like Kashiwa Reysol and Sanfrecce Hiroshima
seeking something bigger: a dream that seemed distant but was now within reach
his life took an even more remarkable turn
Despite suffering a severe tibia fracture in July
Júnior Santos managed to return just in time for the Copa Libertadores final
Botafogo won their first-ever continental title
and Júnior’s goal in the 3-1 final against Paraguayan club Olimpia sealed the glory for his team
crowned him the tournament’s top scorer an impressive feat for a player who had already netted eight goals in the qualifiers and group stage by May
his rise from the lower divisions of Brazilian football
a serious injury that kept him off the pitch for months
And despite doubts about his place in the team
the forward never stopped fighting for his chance
Even though he lost his starting spot in Botafogo due to the return of teammates Luiz Henrique
his perseverance allowed him to shine when it mattered most
is a reminder that football isn’t just about talent and stats; it’s about struggle
the man who once played for food is a South American champion
having conquered the Copa Libertadores with a goal that will go down in Botafogo’s history
What would that 23-year-old who heard his destiny in church say
He always believed that football had something big in store for him

announces the upcoming group show The Art of Fashion
"Art and fashion have a symbiotic relationship,” said Battista
“I love that the artists have considered fashion in the broadest sense
from personal style and identity politics to street art and celebrity culture
Abstract patterns that derive from textiles
as well as works derived from textiles themselves
The work of mainstream artists sits effortlessly with that of the Fountain House Gallery artists
and creates a dynamic and fun dialogue across generations and styles."
Traditional motifs of high fashion play a significant role in the exhibition
and George Penon Cassallo’s paintings are influenced by fashion trends
as seen in glossy magazine spreads or advertisements
Eva O’Leary’s and Maura Terese’s photographs recall the crisp lines of fashion photography
Jasmine Soto’s drawings recall fashion line spread sheets while Joyce Siegel’s take these into the realm of semaphores that may be read as a cryptic language of dress shapes
Christopher Polgar’s drawings may be compared to quickly drawn fashion illustrations and invoke the nostalgia of viewing fashion shows pre-camera phones
Street style is represented by Gavin Dubblex Alleyne
whose MODA painting recalls the original style of subway graffiti
Elizabeth Bick’s photographs of Bushwick women and Kathy Pieper’s paintings of men can be read as homage to New York’s dynamic street style
Celebrity culture is another preoccupation of artists in the show: Gary Peabody includes a Goth version of Adele; Martin Cohen pictures Cindy Crawford on a groceries run; Glenn Goldstein presents a meticulous drawing of Bianca Jagger; and A
Lutz shows a painting with collaged objects of Bianca Del Rio
Fashion is not confined to humans; pet style is another lighthearted element in the show
Mercedes Kelly’s Mother Cat in Living Room continues her abiding motif of animal paintings
and features an anthropomorphic cat depicted in a bright palette of repeated patterns
Bridget Pierpont’s RUPAC depicts her chihuahua Rue in the guise of departed rapper Tupac
And Susan Spangenberg’s painting reminds us with its graphic text that dogs are not just fashion accessories
Several of the artists took the theme of fashion into a more abstract notion
Berman created paintings whose abstract surfaces recall the warp and weft of fabric
and Grace Hale produced hand printed fabrics that hang in the gallery
has created her most ambitious work to date
a wall-sized work that tells her history through a collage of fabrics
Ella Veres has produced an installation with a group of fabric necklaces as well as shoes that serve as flowerpots
Katie Holten’s pink pussy hat and George Williams’ painting of a woman in hijab serve as reminders of recent political upheaval
reminding us that fashion is inextricably linked to gender
videos by Lisa Kirk and Cheryl Donegan are included
Kirk’s Revolution is a perfume ad aimed at revolutionaries for a scent that the artist devised with a professional perfumer
Donegan’s fashion shows as performance art are seen on video alongside two of the real creations on mannequins
Donegan has also styled the curator and Fountain House Gallery staff in her original work
The Art of Fashion showcases more than 70 works

Two men were arrested on felony charges of burglary and grand theft after a deputy discovered them transporting a trailer loaded with numerous large boxes out of Ave Maria at 2:30 a.m
according to a Collier County Sheriff's Office report
were charged with burglary of an unoccupied structure and grand theft between $5,000 and $10,000 for the theft of kitchen cabinets valued at $7,000
The report says the deputy stopped the pickup because the trailer attached to the back did not have a license plate
as well as there have been recent burglaries in the area and the time of the day was odd to be transporting the load of cabinets
A detective interrogated the two and learned that Cruz was attempting to get a contract tile job at the Ave Maria house under construction
and that he returned to the job site with Gutierrez and knew about the cabinets inside
They entered the home without permission and loaded the cabinets onto the trailer
The detective contacted a superintendent with the home's builder
who confirmed that the cabinets had just arrived Friday and belonged to them

FIBA announced the 2013 Class of Inductees of the FIBA Hall of Fame
Over the next three weeks (weekdays from 28 May to 12 June)
MIES (FIBA Hall of Fame) - On Monday 27 May, FIBA announced the 2013 Class of Inductees of the FIBA Hall of Fame
Today we look at Brazil's Maria Paula Gonçalves Da Silva
An iconic figure in Brazilian basketball, Maria Paula Goncalves Da Silva is entering the FIBA Hall of Fame.
A protagonist for the national side throughout her career
the 1.74m 'Magic Paula' amazed with her dribbling
who came into the world on the 11th of March
truly was a wizard when the ball was in her hands
But the Brazilians had the dynamic trio of Hortencia Marcari, Janeth Arcain and Magic Paula in their squad
The players on both teams seemed to run up and down the court at a 100mph that day and mesmerized fans with a scoring explosion the Brazilians ultimately won, 110-107
Magic Paula converted 15 of 18 opportunities at the free-throw line and drilled a couple of three-balls en route to 29 points
Brazil then capped the most famous summer in their basketball history with a 96-87 triumph over China in the Gold Medal Game
Asked to look back at her time as a player after being told she was to be inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame
she answered: "Surely the world title in Australia was the most important of my career and a generation.”
Brazil and Magic Paula had another success
The team reached the Final of the Atlanta Games
Brazil were able to celebrate a first-ever medal in the Olympic women’s tournament
There were other games of huge significance for Magic Paula
like the Gold Medal Game win in Havana against Cuba in the 1991 Pan American Games
Cuba President Fidel Castro was the most famous spectator at that game
Magic Paula is elated to be a part of the 2013 Class for the FIBA Hall of Fame
"It is the recognition of a successful track record in basketball
"I want to share this award with my teammates
my family and all the people who somehow helped and supported me
"It is gratifying to be remembered almost 14 years after leaving the courts."
Guillermo Stábile’s awesome Argentina team crowned themselves the kings of South America in style
was won with a 3-0 drubbing of Brazil on 3 April of that year
the fifth match of a round-robin tournament that served as a final for the two leading teams
The result held little disgrace for the vanquished Brazilians. Though they would go on to lift the World Cup in emphatic fashion just 12 months later, boosted by the talents of Garrincha and a 17-year-old Pelé – who had been absent the previous year in Lima
Peru – there was nothing the Seleção could do against one of the most formidable sides Argentina have ever sent out to a football pitch
José Dellachea and Néstor Rossi stopped anything in their way
funnelling the ball up to a forward line that aficionados know simply by its members’ surnames: from right to left
The three central components of that wonderful quintet
Humberto Maschio and Antonio Angelillo were the ‘Angels with Dirty Faces’
the street urchins from Buenos Aires’ sprawling
were starring at Italy’s most renowned clubs
the elder statesman of that youthful attack at 26
was a legend at Independiente and later featured for Brazil’s Palmeiras before returning to his boyhood idols in Avellaneda and enjoying a sedate retirement in Santiago
But one of those players more than any other typified the makeshift brilliance and eccentricity of those golden years of Argentine football: Oreste Omar Corbatta
alcoholic right winger who is considered one of the greatest in history
on the same level as that other troubled genius
Born in the agricultural town of Daireaux in March 1936
Corbatta was one of eight children raised by Italian immigrant Gerónimo and his wife
When Osmar was just five his father passed away
and Isabel moved the entire clan to La Plata in order to escape the grinding poverty of the countryside
their tiny home in the capital of Buenos Aires did not even have a door
and when the young Corbatta was not selling fruit in the street or collecting old bottles to contribute to the family’s meagre finances
he could be found playing football barefoot on the dirt roads surrounding his house
This left little time for an education: he never progressed past the second grade and throughout his life was unable to read and write
he would later carry a newspaper under his arm to hide his secret from journalists and all but his closest friends; those in on his Achilles heel would read back favourable match reports where Corbatta was mentioned
and formed part of their youth ranks until he was let go in mysterious circumstances – he alleged that a serious ankle injury ended his time there
who in 2016 released a biography of the star
heard from former team-mates that he was forced to go over an alleged boot robbery
Corbatta continued to hone his trade in regional football until
He arrived at the Avellaneda team clad in an old checkered shirt
as he prepared to welcome the winger and settle him into lodgings
Those tattered clothes were his only belongings in the world
What little video survives of El Loco depicts a tiny wisp of a player
dwarfed by the burly defenders tasked with blocking his path
At just five foot four inches and bearing an apparently painfully undernourished frame
Corbatta did not look the part as a professional footballer
that was certainly the prevailing sentiment
Look at who we have just given the shirt to,” a fan was overheard saying on that inauspicious debut
dishevelled wretch brought in from the countryside; the anti-athlete”
Luckily for the 19-year-old – and for Racing
for that matter – those first impressions proved to be incorrect
Corbatta slotted almost instantly into the Academia first team
where his incredible dribbling skills and brutal shot made him a favourite at the club and delivered two Primera División titles during his seven years in the first team
With so little surviving in terms of concrete evidence of his playing career outside of grainy newsreel and the living testaments provided by Racing Magazine and the eternal Gráfico
what endures to the present day is the Corbatta legend
I cannot even see,” the bleary-eyed winger told his colleague
shortly before kicking off a Primera División match against Estudiantes de la Plata
Ninety tough minutes of football lay ahead for Racing Club
even with one of the greatest forward lines in their history
But their right winger seemed to have more immediate problems
He had been out all night drinking and sneaked into Racing’s Cilindro stadium still in an advanced state of inebriation
Tita Mattiussi had grown up inside the club and worked there her entire life as kit lady
cleaner and mentor to the young stars living in the pension maintained for prospects
and she had an unorthodox manner of bringing her wayward charge back to his senses
the resourceful matriarch obliged with a bucket of cold water over Orestes’ head
This sharp shock managed to alleviate the worst of his drunkenness
but Corbatta must have still appeared in no fit state to participate in that day’s clash
Coach José Della Torre briefed his charges on the game ahead
as he continued inebriated despite Tita’s best efforts to flush the alcohol out of his system
This was 1959; even allowing for his dalliances
the swaying genius would occupy his habitual role on the right flank
Despite the obvious handicap of not seeing the ball
the star went on to score two goals to sink the La Plata club and inspire the club to a rousing 6-1 victory
Corbatta languished along the right touchline barely involved in play
His behaviour caught the attention of a nearby photographer
play a bit and I’ll take your photo.” Roused from his accidie
dribbled effortlessly past three defenders and scored
“I have only just put the film in.” Corbatta cursed the photographer and refused to take any further part in the game from his refuge on the flank
A kinder portrayal of the young, scatter-brained star is provided by Mundo Deportivo. The magazine’s October 1956 edition featured the smiling, fresh-faced 20-year-old, his hair slicked back into a parting and a gold medallion hanging from his neck. An impressive performance against Boca Juniors had helped Racing take a 1-0 victory
despite a Cilindro pitch clogged with mud which hardly suited the youngster’s dribbling style
in a section of the magazine dedicated to reporting football’s curiosities – surely a column in which Corbatta soon became accustomed to seeing his name – which yields a gem
“Needed up until the last minute to talk with the radio and sent off with an ovation from the Racing press
Corbata (sic) did not notice that he had mistakenly gone down to the Boca dressing room,” the diarist notes
“The laughter which this inspired was tiny next to the cackles released by the discomfort with which Corbata went back on himself to reach the home tunnel.” Be it for his inability to read the dressing room signs
the youngster had walked straight into enemy territory without realising
That was the same year Corbatta received a brutal introduction to the world of international football
was selected for the Argentine national team to participate in a friendly against Río de la Plata arch-rivals Uruguay
It should go without saying that the match
was a friendly in name only; neither side would pass up the chance to humiliate their counterparts from the other side of the estuary
and the promise of making himself a favourite back in Buenos Aires seems to have influenced Corbatta’s actions that day as he pulled off a wonderful but provocative piece of individual skill
The winger was clearly revelling in torturing the Uruguayans
Corbatta received the ball and proceeded to loop the ball over Sasia’s head with a trademark sombrero
the youngster waited for Sasia to find his bearings and come back at him
and neatly slotted the ball through his legs
he awaited Sasia’s approach once more – and knocked it back through the defender’s legs
performing the cheekiest of nutmegs with his back turned to the fuming rival
A team-mate soon obliged El Duro; the next action saw Corbatta sent sprawling on the turf of the legendary Estadio Centenario
where the first World Cup winners in 1930 were being embarrassed by this quick-footed upstart
Sasia walked over to his prostrate torturer-in-chief
ostensibly to see how he was after that ferocious tackle
But the defender was not going to pass up his chance now he had finally caught up with his man; Corbatta was greeted not with an outstretched hand to help him back on his feet
but a tremendous haymaker which knocked out two of his front teeth
the star would carry around that reminder of what happened when his talents ran out of control
proving that his innocence off the pitch would not excuse any excesses on it
Corbatta continued to torment defenders the length and breadth of South America for the entirety of his professional career
virtuoso talent found its zenith when coupled with the rest of the ‘Angels with Dirty Faces’ in Lima
The winger scored two of the 25 goals Guillermo Stábile’s Albiceleste stars pilfered in just six games
winning the first five to build up an unassailable advantage before losing a dead rubber to the hosts in what
appears a nod to continental diplomacy as well as certain excesses in celebrating the title
but they were supplied by the prodigious right foot of his Racing team-mate who led the tournament in a merry dance
“Oreste and Enrique Omar Sívori were the great forwards of the age and the team that won in Lima over March and April earned a place in history,” he told Télam years later
El Loco scored a goal that was so memorable it made the pages of Life as a second-by-second montage
describes it thus: “The play was in the Argentine half
when a clearance put the ball at the feet of Corbatta
whom he left trailing in a rapid sprint to the opposition goal
but his inspiration led him to conceive something even more spectacular and picturesque: he wait for Salazar to arrive
waited for the goalkeeper to try and come out and with a ‘slap’ buried the ball.”
Despite still possessing those dizzying skills that so enraptured the editors of Life
Corbatta was already leading an Argentina in chronic decline
Angelillo and Sívori followed that match from across the Atlantic in Italy
where they had been lured by Serie A’s promise of riches following the extravaganza they protagonised in Lima and where each went on to enjoy brilliant careers
fled his home nation to avoid mandatory national service and endured 20 years of exile before finally being allowed to return
Corbatta and Cruz were joined by Ángel Labruna for the 1958 World Cup
called up in desperation well past his peak
La Albiceleste were dumped out in the first round
The following year, on home soil they managed to retain their South American title, but they laboured to victory with a draw over Brazil in the final game, and it was the effervescent Pelé rather than Corbatta who took all the plaudits
The authorities turned to pragmatism over fantasy as the means of restoring the reputation shattered in Sweden
and while Corbatta did participate in the qualifiers for Chile 1962
he was left at home for the tournament itself
and from that point onwards El Loco entered in a steady downward decline
Wall points out that wingers are the prizefighters of football
they must rely on their own wits to outfox their adversaries
and more than any other position rely on a dose of madness in their trade
Garrincha died penniless and alone at the age of 49, consumed by his demons and by the drink. A similar fate befell George Best
while the hero of Argentina’s 1978 World Cup victory
battled for years with alcoholism and lived on the streets and in shanty towns before finally breaking his addiction
a contemporary of Corbatta’s in the 1950s and also illiterate
was crushed by the military dictatorship that ousted Juan Domingo Perón for his political views and
died outside Independiente’s stadium at just 38 after being hit by a bus
was left bankrupt by a string of failed marriages
which his alcoholism and chronic unreliability surely helped to destroy one time and another
he moved to Boca Juniors for the then-astronomic fee of 12 million pesos (US$85,000)
But he played just 18 times for the Xeneize in two years
scoring seven goals before moving to Colombia with Independiente Medellín
That adventure ended in familiar fashion: brief moments of magic which have preserved his folk-hero status with Medellín supporters up to the present day
missed training sessions and disputes with coaches and directors
until finally in 1970 he returned to Argentina
Corbatta wiled out the remainder of his career at a succession of lower league and amateur clubs
ending in the wilds of Patagonia where he literally played for his next meal
Racing took pity on their former star and offered him a tiny room under the away stand of El Cilindro
only venturing out of his sanctuary to frequent the bars immediately adjacent to the stadium
“Death has crossed the line,” Página 12 wrote in its obituary
while La Nación mourned the “architect of a football that moved you”
The tiny alley that runs parallel to the away end in El Cilindro was later renamed Pasaje Corbatta in his memory; the only recognisable landmark is a restaurant run by octogenarian proprietors Susi and Lalo
where in this writer’s opinion they prepare the most delicious milanesa sandwiches in Buenos Aires
Novelist Federico Levin wrote of that strangest of football breeds
the winger: “They share aesthetically the clumsy beauty of their movements
Ethically they assent to dismantle the logic of indulgence
to experience it as a necessity: one dribble or trick too many is ‘too many’ precisely because it exceeds the plain economic calculation in the quest for success.”
sought to play football as he did on the bumpy wastelands of La Plata
where life was simple and the only imperative was to streak past one’s marker
His reign at the pinnacle of football was all-too brief
curtailed by off-field issues as much as the game’s own loss of innocence as the glorious 1950s came to a close
But he remains an all-time idol of the Argentine game
a reminder that even the scrawny waif that turns up to training with just the clothes on his back can go on to conquer the world

An estimated 28.000 natives live on the Janomami Reservation
a doctor from the Osvaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz)
Despite spending only a few days as the Pan American Health Organization's Special Envoy on the Yanomami Indigenous Reserve in the Amazon
he saw enough suffering to recently make national and international news
"What we have seen is a very difficult health situation
frequent cases of malaria and diarrheal diseases
there are not enough teams and health structures," Sikueira told the BBC
"To witness this level of suffering live is very harrowing."
declared a state of public health emergency in the territory after it emerged that hundreds of Yanomami children had died of malnutrition in the previous four years
The deaths are linked to water pollution caused by mining and logging in the densely forested area
President Lula personally visited the area on January 21 and called the situation "inhumane," before accusing predecessor Jair Bolsonaro of genocide against the rainforest tribe
what I saw in Roraima was genocide: a premeditated crime against the Yanomami people
committed by a government insensitive to human suffering," he said
"I came here to say that we will treat the indigenous people as human beings."
On the channel of the messaging app Telegram
Bolsonaro called Lula's speech a "farce" and said that "from 2020 to 2022
twenty health initiatives have drawn special attention to indigenous territories."
An estimated 28.000 native people live on the Janomami reservation
engage in small-scale slash-and-burn agriculture
Bolsonaro frequently criticized the size of indigenous reserves and promised to open some of them to agriculture and mining
His government has weakened environmental protections
and critics say his rhetoric has encouraged illegal activity in the area
It is estimated that around 20.000 illegal miners operate in the Yanomami people's reserve today
miners opened fire on members of the Yanomami with automatic weapons
Lula's new government claims that more than 2019 indigenous children have died from treatable diseases since 500
"This unprecedented and catastrophic health crisis that has befallen the Yanomami people in northern Brazil is a genocide that has been carried out for years," said Sara Schenker
an indigenous expert at the human rights NGO Survival International
"Former President Bolsonaro deliberately opened the gates of this territory and encouraged thousands of gold hunters to flock inside
"He disbanded the Indigenous Health Service and ignored desperate calls for action from Indigenous organisations
Survival and many others as the scale of the crisis became apparent."
According to the non-governmental organization Instituto Socioambiental (ISA)
one of the main organizations working with the rights of indigenous peoples in Brazil
the Yanomami indigenous reserve is inhabited by eight peoples and consists of an area of 9,6 million hectares
located between the states of Amazonas and Roraima near the border of Brazil and Venezuela
was ratified and recognized by the Brazilian government in 1992
through a decree signed by the then president Fernando Color
The ISA highlights four "potential risks and existing problems" on Yanomami indigenous land: illegal miners
gold miners have become one of the main concerns for both area residents and experts
published in April last year with technical support from the ISA
documented the illegal mining of gold and other minerals in the region
the experts pointed out that the destruction of the forest by mining activities has "drastically increased" since 2016
mining has grown by no less than 3.350 percent," the text read
The report also points out that the expansion of mining in the indigenous reserve is associated with a "significant decrease" in the quality of life of the region's residents
accompanied by worsening indicators of violence
the state where part of the Janomami reserve is located
had one of the highest rates of violence against indigenous peoples in Brazil
according to the latest edition of the Atlas of Violence
published by the Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea) in 2021
Illegal mining is associated with a higher incidence of infectious diseases in indigenous communities
Siqueira explains that miners circulate through many areas and often use contraband drugs that minimize malaria symptoms but do not eliminate the parasite from their bodies
"They end up being a source of pathogen spread
because they carry the disease in areas where the situation was previously under control," he says
Mineral extraction in the area depends on the use of mercury
a toxic compound that contaminates water and food sources
Exposure to this substance has been linked to a number of health problems
Indigenous rights groups report that the situation has also worsened due to "a general state of uncertainty imposed by the increased circulation of armed prospectors in various areas of the territory," which it says has hampered the delivery of health services to the indigenous population
"There have been complaints that miners have appropriated medicines reserved for indigenous peoples," adds Dr
A medical expert explains that if malaria is diagnosed and treated within 48 hours of the first appearance of symptoms
transmission to other people can be reduced
"But illegal mining demobilizes teams of health professionals
who can no longer care for and treat infected patients."
This combination of factors helps to explain the picture shared in the world in the last days
adults and elderly people in critical health
President Lula has vowed to crack down on illegal mining in the reserve
and a Health Ministry medical task force was sent to the region on January 23 to set up a field hospital in Boa Vista
At least 16 members of the Yanomami people were flown out of the reserve by helicopter on the same day
Health authorities also announced that a team of eight individuals would be transferred to the Surukuku region
"This is a public health crisis and we will solve it," said Minister of Health Nisia Trinidade on January 21 during a visit to the reserve
"But society needs to know what's going on here."
Brazilian authorities have also begun distributing food aid
Justice Minister Flavio Dino announced an investigation into possible crimes committed against the Janomami people
"There are serious indications of genocide
which will be investigated by the federal police," Dino said
Sequeira warns that the problems faced by the Yanomami people can be found in other indigenous territories across the Amazon
"We know there are problems in Rio Negro and Alto Solimoes
I was there last year and saw a similar situation of absence of help and care," he says
"This is something that needs to be addressed urgently
