The deal looked off earlier this week due to Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) regulations which prevented Roque from returning to Barça, a requisite for him then being transferred on, from his loan at Real Betis
However, world football's governing body FIFA ruled the signing could proceed and it has been finalised ahead of the transfer window closing in Brazil on Friday
Barça could also pocket an additional €5m in add-ons as part of the deal which sees Roque return to Brazil just over a year after leaving for Europe
They will also be due 20% of any future transfer
Meanwhile, in exchange for agreeing to end Roque's loan early, Betis have received an additional 30% of winger Abde Ezzalzouli's economic rights.
Vitor Roque has completed his move from Barcelona to Palmeiras. Fran Santiago - UEFA/UEFA via Getty ImagesAbde joined Betis from Barça for an initial €7.5m in 2023, with the Catalan side maintaining 50% of any future transfer. That percentage has now been cut to 20%.
Roque, who celebrated turning 20 on Friday, only joined Barça last January in a deal worth an initial €30m from Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense.
He made 16 appearances for the club last season, scoring twice, before moving to Betis on a season-long loan last August. During his time in Seville, he scored seven times in 33 games.
Palmeiras had pledged to sign Roque in the summer if a deal could not be completed this month, but always preferred to bring him in now to give him time to settle ahead of the Club World Cup, which starts in June.
The Brazilian side are in Group A with Al Ahly, Inter Miami and Porto, with the chance to play in the competition a big lure for Roque.
HOUSTON (Feb. 22, 2025) – Houston Dynamo FC have transferred defender Micael dos Santos Silva to SE Palmeiras in Brazil’s Séria A, both Clubs announced today.
Micael arrived in Houston in April 2022, signing with Dynamo 2 before quickly breaking into the first team in 2023 and establishing himself as one of the top defenders in MLS the past two seasons. The 24-year-old immediately became a key contributor in the backline, making 64 appearances (59 starts) in MLS regular season and postseason play, while leading the team in clearances in 2023 and 2024.
"I am incredibly grateful to have had the privilege of calling Houston my home for the past two and half years," said Micael. "Thank you to all of the Dynamo fans who have supported me every step of the way and to the entire technical staff and organization for giving me the opportunity to grow into the player and person I am today. I’ll keep all of the memories with me forever."
Micael’s contributions helped Houston win the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, make a run to the 2023 Western Conference Final, earn a spot in the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup and boast consecutive MLS postseason appearances. Micael also capped off a stellar 2024 campaign, helping the Dynamo allow the third-fewest goals across MLS play (39) and record 10 clean sheets across all competitions, while the team set new single-season Club records in points (54) and road wins (8).

Per Club policy, additional terms of the transfer will not be disclosed.

The Uruguayan winger is also the Club’s all-time leader in goal contributions, with 72 total.
A product of Peñarol’s youth academy system in Uruguay, Torres joined Orlando City ahead of the 2022 MLS campaign and helped lead the Lions to their first trophy in the Club’s MLS era, the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the Club’s first two appearances in the Concacaf Champions Cup and the Club’s first-ever appearance in the Conference Finals of the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs.

Vitor Roque’s proposed move from Barcelona to Brazilian club Palmeiras has stalled because of Spanish transfer rules regarding returning loan players
has been at fellow La Liga club Real Betis since August 2024 when he joined on a season-long loan deal with the option of another year
Palmeiras had been looking to bring Roque back to Brazil on a permanent deal and Barca were keen for the move to go ahead
a transfer to Palmeiras at this time would fall foul of rules in Spain which state players returning from loan to their parent club must do so when the transfer window is open so the player can be re-registered with the parent club
The winter transfer window in Spain closed on February 3
Any proposed move to Palmeiras may now have to wait until the European summer window

which begins on June 14 and is being held in the United States

regarding player transfers after the majority of European domestic seasons end but before the Club World Cup begins
FIFA said it plans to open “an exceptional registration window from 1 to 10 June 2025 prior to the start of the competition”
Roque joined Barcelona in January 2024 in a transfer worth €30million (£26m; $33m) in fixed fees
in a deal the Catalan club brought forward from summer 2024

Palmeiras president Leila Mejdalani Pereira said CONMEBOL's punishment of Cerro Porteno for racial abuse against Palmeiras under-20 player Luighi was too lenient
criticizing the South American governing body's treatment of Brazilian clubs
CONMEBOL fined the Paraguayan club $50,000 and banned fans from attending their home games during the Libertadores under-20 tournament, where 18-year-old striker Luighi was left in tears on Thursday when a man in the stands made racist gestures at visiting Palmeiras players
"It hurts the soul," Luighi later wrote on Instagram
That is the question I hope we won't have to ask at some point
Pereira said CONMEBOL's punishment for Cerro was absurd
I would like to express my indignation at CONMEBOL's penalty of $50,000 and closed gates," she told TNT Sports on Monday
"If you're a minute late entering the pitch
You see how CONMEBOL views the offence of racism
Palmeiras president Leila Mejdalani Pereira has slammed CONMEBOL's punishment for racial abuse. Wagner Meier/Getty ImagesPereira said Palmeiras and other clubs have signed a letter to FIFA
asking the global governing body to intervene in cases of racism
it's not possible that someone wasn't moved by that boy's sadness ..
the vast majority of Brazilian clubs have suffered this kind of crime," she said
Pereira said Brazilian clubs were not treated well by CONMEBOL despite the country accounting for 60% of the governing body's revenue
I called [CONMEBOL] president Alejandro [Dominguez]
"After I gave the interview that everyone saw
he called me and told me that he would be very strict with the sanctions
"[And you can see that] because of the sanction that CONMEBOL gave for this incident
I have no doubt that this is an incentive for new cases of racism to occur
"But I have no doubts about the solidarity we have with all Brazilian clubs
the vast majority of which have already suffered this type of crime in South America
I have no doubt that this will not stay like this
"We will take very serious measures against CONMEBOL
Pereira even floated the prospect of Brazilian clubs ditching CONMEBOL and joining up with the North

Houston Dynamo FC have transferred center back Micael to Brazilian Série A side Palmeiras
The 24-year-old Brazil native departs for a club-record fee (reportedly up to $6 million), surpassing the previous mark set last month with midfielder Coco Carraquilla's transfer to LIGA MX's Pumas UNAM
Micael was originally acquired by the club's MLS NEXT Pro affiliate, Houston Dynamo 2, in April 2022 from Atlético Mineiro. He quickly progressed to the first team and scored three goals in 80 appearances across all competitions
He was a key figure for a Houston side that won the US Open Cup and reached the Western Conference Final in 2023
"We are thankful for Micael’s contributions to the Dynamo and very proud of his growth over the past two and a half years in Houston
While the timing of this transfer is difficult for our group
we made a commitment to Micael that we would support him in his ambitions to play for one of the top clubs in the world
and we wish him well in his next step," said president of soccer Pat Onstad
"A tremendous amount of credit goes to Ben Olsen and his coaching staff
He joined us as a young professional with few first-team matches and left as one of the best defenders in MLS
We aim to be recognized as one of the top developmental environments and staff for young players to develop in North America
Micael is a shining example of our progress towards this goal."
At Houston, Micael formed a renowned center-back pairing with Erik Sviatchenko as the Dynamo conceded 39 goals (third-lowest in MLS) last season
"I am incredibly grateful to have had the privilege of calling Houston my home for the past two and half years," said Micael
"Thank you to all of the Dynamo fans who have supported me every step of the way and to the entire technical staff and organization for giving me the opportunity to grow into the player and person I am today
I’ll keep all of the memories with me forever."
The club is reportedly close to signing fellow Brazilian center back Felipe Andrade from Fluminense. They also have Daniel Steres, Ethan Bartlow and recent signing Obafemi Awodesu at the position

Manchester City have completed the signing of Vitor Reis from Palmeiras
The teenage defender has signed a four-and-a-half year contract at City through to the summer of 2029, after The Athletic reported an initial fee of €35million (£29.5m
one of the biggest clubs in the world,” Reis said
“Everyone has seen the amazing achievements in recent seasons
and I want to make my mark as we seek more trophies
“Working with Pep Guardiola is something every young player wants to do
and I know he can help me to develop into the best player I can be
“City also have a lot of experience of working with Brazilian footballers and joining the likes of Ederson and Savinho in the squad will be a big help to me.”
Vitor Reis is a calm and composed defensive leader - there are echoes of John Stones
The Brazilian’s arrival continues a busy January transfer window for City, having signed defender Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens and reached a verbal agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt for the transfer of forward Omar Marmoush
Reis has been capped by Brazil up to under-17 level and has made 22 first-team appearances for Palmeiras since making his senior debut in June
The 19-year-old signed his first professional contract with Palmeiras towards the end of the 2022 season
and swiftly established himself as a regular starter in central defence for Abel Ferreira’s side
The defender came through the Palmeiras youth system at the same time as forwards Endrick and Luis Guilherme
who moved on to Real Madrid and West Ham United respectively in 2024

Palmeiras have not registered Vitor Reis for the 2025 Campeonato Paulista with the teenage defender expected to join Manchester City
Reis did not take part in Palmeiras' training session on Tuesday's but was spotted at the club's facilities saying goodbye to his teammates and staff members
With negotiations between City and Palmeiras at an advanced stage, the Sao Paulo-based club has omitted Reis from the squad for the upcoming Campeonato Paulista
Palmeiras president Leila Pereira confirmed earlier this week that an official offer had arrived from City for Reis but it was below their asking price
However, City upped their bid to a fixed €35 million ($36m) for Reis on Tuesday and Palmeiras have reportedly agreed a deal
Should the transfer be completed, the fee would be a Brazilian league record for a defender, surpassing the €20m transfer that Paris Saint-Germain spent on Lucas Beraldo's move from Sao Paulo in 2023
is expected to travel to England in the coming days to undergo medical before signing his contract with City

Palmeiras have accepted City's offer for the player to join them in this transfer window
Reis scored two goals in 22 professional games since being promoted to Palmeiras' first team in June 2024
His contract with Palmeiras expires in December 2028 and he has a €100m release clause
City's other new young talent Abdukodir Khusanov will also travel to the club to undergo a medical on Thursday
Vitor Roque's transfer from Barcelona to Palmeiras is set to fall through due to the Royal Spanish Football Federation's [RFEF] regulations which prevent Real Betis cutting his loan short
Sources have told ESPN Brazil that Palmeiras are exploring workarounds
but there is pessimism about bringing the striker to the club before the transfer window closes in the country on Friday
Palmeiras had agreed a €25 million fee with Barça for Roque
with the Catalan club maintaining 20% of any future transfer
Roque would have to return to Barça from his loan at Betis
Article 159 of the RFEF's general regulations explains that loans can be cut short if the two clubs and the player are all in agreement
but that the club where the player is set to return -- in this case Barça -- must be inside a registration period
That is not the case after the transfer window in Spain closed earlier this month
The same article also states that loans are un-transferable
ruling out the possibility of Roque going directly from Betis to Palmeiras on loan before finalising a permanent deal in the future
the 19-year-old will therefore remain at Betis until the summer
where he has scored seven goals in 33 appearances so far this season
Roque joined Barça in January 2024 from Athletico Paranaense for an initial fee of around €30m with the same amount due again in potential add-ons
He found appearances hard to come by at the Blaugrana
scoring twice in 16 games last season before heading out to Betis on loan
He had previously made his name at Athletico Paranaense
where he scored 28 times in 81 games as a teenager
earning him his solitary Brazil cap in 2023
ESPN Brazil's Francisco De Laurentiis contributed to this story
Vitor Roque has scored seven goals for Real Betis this season. Fran Santiago/Getty ImagesPalmeiras have not given up hope of signing Barcelona loanee Vitor Roque before the transfer window closes in Brazil on Feb
However, Palmeiras are aware that a deal will be difficult. Roque moved to Real Betis on a season-long loan last summer from Barça
whom he joined in January 2023 from Brazilian outfit Athletico-PR in a deal worth an initial €35 million ($39m)
He has a contract until June 2031 at Barça
who are only prepared to let Roque leave on a permanent deal
The LaLiga leaders will only listen to offers in the region of €25m
Even if Palmeiras were to meet Barça's financial demands
they would still have to convince Betis to cut short Roque's loan
Betis have not made it clear to Palmeiras if they would allow the Brazilian forward to leave the club for free this month or if they would seek financial compensation
has scored seven goals in 31 appearances for Betis
The Seville-based club have an option to extend Roque's loan deal for a further season or make his move permanent this summer
Betis sporting director Victor Fajardo recently indicated they expect Roque to remain at the club and fight for a starting place
"There is nothing [in relation to leaving]," Fajardo said
with whom we have a very close relationship
nor I as director have said anything about leaving
"Vitor has played a lot of minutes this season and is one of our squad. Now, new teammates (Colombian striker Cucho Hernández and Brazilian forward Antony) have arrived who are pushing hard [to start]
and it's up to him to increase the pace too."
Palmeiras attempted to sign Roque in August 2024 but both Barça and the player's agents wanted him to remain in Europe

is gathering potential options given his contract with the Gunners is due to expire at the end of the season
Sources stressed that talks between Jorginho's agent and Palmeiras were preliminary and no formal offer was discussed
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta last week suggested he wanted "to have these conversations much later" in the season with both Jorginho and Thomas Partey out of contract in less than six months
But he said the two players are now free to negotiate directly with other clubs
Arteta values Jorginho's input on and off the field -- the Italian is currently taking his coaching badges -- but sources suggest he is only likely to be offered a one-year extension
The 33-year-old would prefer a longer deal and has previously expressed a desire to return to Italy before he retires from playing
Orlando City SC sent forward Facundo Torres to Brazil's Palmeiras for a reported club-record $14 million transfer fee on Friday

Palmeiras have signed Barcelona forward Vitor Roque on a permanent deal
An initial fee of €25million (£20.6m; $26m) plus €5m in add-ons has been agreed, and a sell-on clause will be included as part of the deal. As compensation for terminating Roque’s loan before the end of the season, Barcelona have agreed to lower their sell-on percentage of Betis winger Abde Ezzalzouli. Barcelona had included a 50 per cent sell-on clause in the deal for Abde, who Betis signed in a deal worth €7.5m in the summer of 2024.
The transfer had initially stalled as rules in Spain state players returning from loan to their parent club must do so when the transfer window is open so the player can be re-registered with the parent club. The winter transfer window in Spain closed on February 3.
Roque has been at Betis since August 2024 when he joined on a season-long loan deal with the option of another year.
The 20-year-old joined Barcelona in January 2024 in a transfer worth €30m in fixed fees, plus €31m more in add-ons, in a deal the Catalan club brought forward from summer 2024.
However, Roque failed to establish himself at Barcelona, playing 353 minutes in the remainder of the 2023-24 campaign, starting just two La Liga games and scoring two goals. He scored four goals in 22 La Liga appearances for Betis during the first half of this season but has not started any of the most recent four league matches.
Barcelona are next in action against Real Sociedad on March 2 while Betis face Real Madrid on March 1.

battles for the ball against Brazil’s Vitor Reis during their FIFA U-17 World Cup quarterfinal soccer match at Jakarta international Stadium in Jakarta
England (AP) — Manchester City signed a second defender in two days
this time 19-year-old Vitor Reis from Palmeiras for 35 million euros ($36 million) on Tuesday
“I’m excited to join Manchester City,” Reis said
“I want to make my mark as we seek more trophies.”
City manager Pep Guardiola talked about the players Tuesday on the eve of his team’s Champions League game at Paris Saint-Germain
Hopefully he can learn English soon,” Guardiola said
The four-time defending Premier League champion has been unusually busy in the January transfer window
City is fifth in the standings — 12 points behind leader Liverpool — and fighting to reach the last 16 in the Champions League
Reis was a Brazil Under-17 international and made 22 first-team appearances for Palmeiras
“He is excellent on the ball and outstanding in the air — he has all the attributes needed to be one of the best,” City director of football Txiki Begiristain said

An ACL injury for Ballon d’Or winner Rodri has also undermined City’s challenge in the Premier League and Europe

In an industry that continues to be dominated by men
a woman has become one of the most important figures in South American and world football
president of the Brazilian giants Palmeiras since 2021
In a 45-minute conversation with The Athletic, Pereira, 61, spoke about being a trailblazer in the game, that impressive production line and why Spain needs to be tougher when fighting racism
Pereira was born in the municipality of Cambuci in Rio de Janeiro
She studied journalism and law but went into business when she took over credit company Crefisa in 2008
She is also the president of the University Centre of the Americas (FAM) and manages 11 other companies
But her breakthrough in football came relatively recently
“My life in football started not so long ago,” she says
I was a Palmeiras fan for many years and we joined the club to collaborate.”
Pereira was named the first female president in Palmeiras’ history in 2021 after twice being elected a councillor (a fan representative) by the club’s members and running uncontested for the presidency
She was re-elected last year in the same way and the club have been hugely successful under her reign, with the men’s side winning seven trophies and the women’s side lifting three, including their first Copa Libertadores Femenina (South America’s equivalent of the Champions League) in 2022
and the academy teams claiming a host of titles
“It is an inspiration for women who want to be in football.”
Pereira said she had not suffered discrimination in football as a woman
She based her argument on having reached the presidency thanks to votes cast by Palmeiras’ members in becoming a councillor
I have seen many things that would not have happened if I were a man,” she says
they say I want to appear more than the club… but it’s not like that: it’s a means of communication that I have with the fans.”
Pereira addresses those critics with a statement backed by her club’s success: “I’m sorry for those sexist critics who disrespect me
who say that a woman’s place is not in football
that because I’m a woman I don’t understand football… without knowing about football
Pereira also organised a press conference last year for female journalists only to make a powerful point about women in football
“That appeared all over the world,” she says
“Some men complained and I told them: ‘I want you to feel in one hour what we women feel in our whole life’
The Palmeiras president says she feels respected by managers
agents and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF)
She will travel to the Club World Cup in the United States this summer with Palmeiras as the only woman in charge of one of the 32 participating clubs
“I’m very proud to be the only woman,” Pereira says, remembering an anecdote from 2022. “We took part in the (old) Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi, in the Middle East, in an extremely sexist country, and there were two women at the top of world football, me as president of Palmeiras and Marina Granovskaia, the director of Chelsea
and here we are as two women at the top of world football?’.”
Pereira says that is why she has no problem with Palmeiras playing in Abu Dhabi or Saudi Arabia, which will host the 2034 World Cup and where women’s freedoms are restricted
“It would be very interesting (to play in those countries) to show that the place of football is for women,” she says
“People are seeing what is happening in Spain (with the abuse of Vinicius Jr),” Pereira says
“I don’t know the legislation in Spain and the way the authorities fight this kind of crime
but they have to punish it in an extremely hard way
there will be no end to this type of crime and others
The Athletic has reported that since October 2021, La Liga has reported 24 incidents of racist abuse directed towards Vinicius Junior
The league has legally denounced incidents of racism and demanded sanctioning powers that had previously been denied
three people were sentenced to eight months in prison after being found guilty of racially abusing Vinicius Jr in that May 2023 match at Valencia
That was the first conviction for racist insults in a football stadium in Spain
racism in legislation is a crime,” she added
We do a lot of campaigns denouncing the aggressors
This month, Manchester City signed the 19-year-old centre-back Reis from Palmeiras — the latest gem from the club’s academy
City will pay €37million (£31m; $39m) for the defender
who has played just 22 times for Palmeiras’ first team
Yet the four had only made a combined 100 official senior appearances when their moves to Europe were confirmed
we have received several inquiries from big clubs in Europe for Vitor Reis,” says Pereira
we did not intend to negotiate his departure before the Club World Cup
Vitor is a player of great technical quality
with an uncommon maturity for such a young athlete
and he would certainly have helped us a lot to achieve our goals if he had stayed.”
But City pushed to make Reis the most expensive Brazilian centre-back to move to Europe
almost doubling the €20m Paris Saint-Germain paid Sao Paulo for Lucas Beraldo last year
“They contacted us and presented an extremely interesting proposal
who maintained a very professional conduct throughout the process
reached the value we considered fair to conclude the operation
I could not be irresponsible in rejecting a proposal with such significant figures and
“Vitor leaves Palmeiras with a great reputation
he had been there since he was a ‘crianca’ (child in Portuguese),” says his long-time agent
“Palmeiras is a club whose premise is the complete training of professionals from the ground up
and now Vitor can join one of the biggest institutions in the world.”

Vitor Reis is a calm and composed defensive leader - there are echoes of John Stones
One Palmeiras wonderkid English fans have yet to see is Estevao
the 17-year-old winger who will join Chelsea this summer after the Club World Cup
Following interest from many European sides
Chelsea agreed a deal last summer worth €45million plus €16.5m in bonuses
“Estevao is a spectacle of a player,” says Pereira. “Already ready for the Premier League
he will be voted the best player in the world
He’s a spectacular kid and he’s going to shine in Europe.”
Estevao had an outstanding season for Palmeiras in 2024
scoring 13 times and providing nine assists in 31 league matches as Palmeiras finished second behind Botafogo in the Brasileiro

Estevao Willian: Chelsea's €34m signing who shrugged off 'Little Messi' nickname to star in Brazil
The Club World Cup will be the first chance for many Chelsea fans to watch him properly, with Palmeiras drawn in a group with Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami
Palmeiras have not been told how much they stand to earn from the tournament depending on how far they go and do not know where they will be staying in the U.S, although they will choose their camp soon based on the options proposed by FIFA
Pereira admits the tickets for fans will have “high prices” but says
“People have to know that it is a big show and big shows have high prices
It’s a tournament of world championship magnitude.”
GO DEEPER
Club World Cup ticket prices sky-high for global fans, normal for U.S. market
The president has no doubt many of Palmeiras’ 20million-strong fanbase will do “the possible and the impossible” to travel in support
She says the club will offer them help with flights and accommodation
Chelsea’s multi-club parent company BlueCo has shown an interest in buying a South American club
Did that possibility arise in negotiations for Estevao
so there is no way to do it,” says Pereira
for example (who are owned by the American Crystal Palace minority stakeholder John Textor)
so it’s difficult for us to participate in a group
In terms of young talents to recently leave Palmeiras
In December 2022, when he was 16, Real Madrid beat Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Chelsea to his signing for €35million plus €25m in variables
Madrid have paid almost €48million of the possible €60m for Endrick after he achieved all the possible bonuses while he was still in Brazil
there will be bonuses for his number of goals
The striker only moved to the Bernabeu last summer when he had turned 18
following FIFA regulations — but since then
he has played just 315 minutes in 19 games across all competitions
“We foresaw that,” says Pereira. “He’s very young, a young talent, but it’s difficult for a kid to come out of Brazil and adapt immediately
He will have patience because he is very determined
Have Palmeiras tried to bring him back to Brazilian football
“This return was never discussed because this period of adaptation to the new club and to Europe was foreseeable
Pereira was head of Brazil’s delegation when they played England at Wembley and Spain at the Bernabeu in March 2024
It was the first time a woman had taken the role
which changes each international break and is occupied by someone from a Brazilian club
she met Madrid president Florentino Perez and Endrick
“That it was a pleasure to be with me,” says Pereira
I have been informed that Endrick is better than Pele’
as nobody else like Pele has ever been born’.”

Palmeiras are understood to value Reis at upwards of £25million (€30.1m, $31m), with Brighton’s bids so far falling short of that figure as talks continue
The Brazilian club are reluctant to let the defender leave and have informed him that they would prefer to retain his services for the upcoming Club World Cup
Arsenal and Real Madrid are among a host of top European clubs who have previously shown an interest in the centre-back.
The 18-year-old signed his first professional contract with Palmeiras towards the end of the 2022 season
Brighton have a track record of using the winter window for signings with the future in mind
The centre of defence will eventually require regeneration

Richard Ríos Puts Palmeiras on Top Against Cerro PorteñoColombian midfielder Richard Ríos made amends with the Palmeiras fans on Wednesday by scoring the winning goal against Cerro Porteño in the Copa Libertadores—a strike that puts the Brazilian side alone at the top of Group G
Ríos celebrated by telling the home crowd to quiet down
a bold move that didn’t sit well with everyone at the Allianz Parque
Palmeiras struggled to find any rhythm in the first half
Diego Martínez’s Paraguayan side came in with a rock-solid defensive plan: tight marking
dislocated his shoulder early on and had to be replaced by Felipe Anderson
who’s still far from showing the form he once had at Lazio
With the game dragging and chances limited
Facundo Torres whipped in a cross to the far post
and Ríos blasted it into the net to break the deadlock
which definitely sparked some tension in the stands
the goal gave Palmeiras a much-needed lift and they started to look more confident from that point on
had a quiet first half but started causing trouble down the flank after the break
still chasing his first goal in seven games for Palmeiras
came close but saw his finish ruled out for a razor-thin offside—confirmed by VAR
Cerro Porteño started to fade and left more gaps at the back
but Abel Ferreira’s men took home three massive points and now sit comfortably atop the group with momentum on their side heading into the next round
Palmeiras have confirmed the signing of Barcelona's Vitor Roque despite the efforts of La Liga to block the move
Orlando City SC have transferred forward Facundo Torres to Brazilian Série A side Palmeiras
The 24-year-old Uruguayan international departs for a club-record fee (reportedly up to $14 million). The move opens a Designated Player spot for Orlando alongside Luis Muriel and Martín Ojeda
Torres leaves as Orlando's all-time leading scorer, having produced 47g/25a in 123 matches across all competitions. He led the Lions to the 2022 US Open Cup title and helped them reach the 2024 Eastern Conference Final
their best-ever performance in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs
He has been involved in so many great moments and successes during his time here that will leave a lasting legacy in our history," said Luiz Muzzi
Orlando's EVP of soccer operations and general manager
but it shows our success in developing young talent into world stars
"We want to thank Facu again for his hard work and everything he has helped bring to our club and our fans during his time in Orlando
We wish him the best as he takes these next steps in his career."
Signed as a Young Designated Player in January 2022 from Peñarol for a reported club-record $7.5 million fee
Torres quickly became the centerpiece of Orlando's attack
His brace in the 2022 USOC final gave Orlando their first piece of silverware since joining MLS in 2015. In 2024, he put up a career-best 16g/6a as the Lions advanced to the Eastern Conference Final, where they lost 1-0 at home against the New York Red Bulls
Torres' rise in Orlando propelled his Uruguay career; he has one goal in 19 caps as the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches
my teammates and all the people who are part of this club for the constant support and trust from the first day," said Torres
Thank you for everything, @facutorresss 💜🐦⬛
Orlando have lost their all-time leading scorer who also led the club in goals over the past two seasons
the Lions could land a transformative offseason signing in attack
After transitioning to the No. 10 role, Ojeda is their presumptive playmaker heading in 2025. Muriel, Ramiro Enrique and Duncan McGuire are the club's main strikers
Torres' new team was drawn in the same FIFA 2025 Club World Cup group as Inter Miami CF. Palmeiras will face Lionel Messi & Co
in their Group A finale on June 23 at Hard Rock Stadium
Additionally, Palmeiras' squad includes longtime LAFC midfielder Eduard Atuesta

Palmeiras Investigates Alleged Racist Gestures in Libertadores Match vs
Cerro PorteñoPalmeiras has launched an internal investigation following allegations that one of its supporters made racist gestures toward Cerro Porteño fans during their Copa Libertadores group stage clash on April 9 at the Allianz Parque in São Paulo
the Brazilian club confirmed that it is using its facial recognition system
to identify the person responsible for the discriminatory behavior reported in the stands
and we remain committed to eradicating all forms of discrimination from South American football,” Palmeiras stated
The club is preparing a formal police complaint
as racism is considered a criminal offense under Brazilian law
Palmeiras also intends to ban the individual from attending any of its home matches in the future
This incident comes shortly after a similar controversy involving the two clubs during the Libertadores U-20 tournament
when Palmeiras youth players were allegedly subjected to racist abuse in Paraguay
club president Leila Pereira criticized CONMEBOL for what she called an insufficient response to the allegations
calling for stricter action to combat racism in football across the continent

revealed that Palmeiras made an effort to try and bring Jesus back to where he began his career but Arsenal didn't even entertain an offer
"Gabriel Jesus is not coming. The subject is closed," Pereira said to O Globo
We are not going to negotiate the player.'"
It was an ambitious move by the three time Copa Libertadores champions to try and re-sign one of the club's biggest stars of the past decade. Arsenal paid $58.35 million to Manchester City for Jesus two seasons ago
After a promising start to his career in North London
he hasn't scored a goal for the club since January and has seen his role diminished off late
Kai Havertz emerged as Mikel Arteta's preferred option at forward and that has left Jesus on the outs
There was a lot of speculation over the summer but a transfer never materialized and it would seem like the Gunners are not ready to part ways with the 27-year-old Brazilian
Jesus made his professional debut with Palmeiras in 2015 and during his time at the Sao Paolo based team he scored 29 goals in 83 appearances before joining Manchester City in 2017
Arsenal's elimination in the quarter-finals of the last UEFA Champions League against Bayern Munich put an end to its CWC aspirations
Palmeiras secured its spot in next summer's tournament by winning the Copa Libertadores in 2021
Pereira also denied any interest in former Inter Milan and Benfica forward Gabriel Barbosa
seemingly discarding a move for any big name player before the CWC
"There are some positions that Abel [Ferreira
Palmeiras manager] would like to reinforce
but I'll tell you in advance; forget the star
I don't believe in idols," she said

Our correspondent Mario Cortegana has sat down with Palmeiras president Leila Pereira
There will be plenty more on the way but the immediately eye-catching responses came on the subject of Manchester City and Brighton’s attempts to sign 18-year-old defender Vitor Reis
Pereira refused to talk about fees or values
said she had not sat down with anyone from City or Brighton about a potential deal
and underlined that no offers had been received
💬 “He is another of our sons from the Palmeiras academy
He is extremely talented and very important for our team
We intend to count on him to help us in the Club World Cup (which starts in June)
At the moment there are only soundings from various clubs… no official proposal
But if there is an interesting offer for Palmeiras and the player
“Estevao will go to Chelsea after the World Cup
the value is very important and that the player leaves after the World Cup
“I want to say the information coming out is not correct
There is an extremely important tournament for Palmeiras and we need Vitor.”
Manchester City working on deal for Palmeiras defender Vitor Reis
If you are just joining us midway through your lunchtime sandwich
let’s get you up to speed on all of today’s news
There will be plenty more to come on all those stories as they develop throughout the day
so stay with us for the best of The Athletic
It’s the theme of the day — and indeed most transfer windows — that managers don’t want to be drawn on transfer speculation when they are thrust in front of the media to preview a match
as he looked ahead to Manchester City hosting Salford in the FA Cup third round tomorrow
💬 “Don’t ask me about (January) because I’m not going (to answer)
All month you’re going to ask the same about all we are linked with in the media
“We know we should not go to the transfer window
The situation that’s happened this season with many injuries
I’m not going to talk because I don’t know.”
before someone then brought up Man City’s attempts to sign Omar Marmoush:
I was clear in my answer; I’m not going to talk
“You can say in every single press conference… I’m not going to answer one question
Is the Dani Olmo registration saga definitely over
things have taken a positive turn for Barcelona in the past few days
with the Spanish government granting them position to register Olmo and Pau Victor in the second half of the season
But even with that reprieve their situation does not seem set in stone
The intervention from the Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD)
the highest sports council within the Spanish government
means Olmo and Victor will be available for Barcelona until a definitive ruling on their case is made
It is unclear how long that could take but for now
it means both players should be eligible for La Liga and the early rounds of the Champions League knockout stages
Pau Victor given temporary permission to play by Spanish government
You had the response of Liverpool boss Arne Slot to a host of January transfer window links earlier
But he did spend a bit longer on the situation with Harvey Elliott
who is due to get a shot in tomorrow’s FA Cup tie against Accrington Stanley at Anfield
Elliott missed two and a half months of the season due to a broken foot
and his only start so far under Slot was in last month’s Carabao Cup tie against Southampton
He’s in competition with many other good players
it’s not so easy to come back and be at your best immediately
I see it with almost all the other players who have been out for five
“That’s the balance we have to find; giving them playing time to get them back to their best level but still be able to win every game.”
There is also hope that summer signing Federico Chiesa will show more of his best form from here on in
You can read all that and more in James Pearce’s piece below
Harvey Elliott set to feature for Liverpool in FA Cup: ‘He’s been unlucky this season’
Nothing truly says ‘Welcome to Everton’ than the 24-hour absurdity of a struggling manager hosting a press conference when he suggests it would be helpful if the fans back him
prompting the search for the club’s ninth permanent manager since David Moyes departed in 2013
It seems Moyes might not be able to resist the sentimental pull of saving the club he worked so hard to turn into a respected
at times over-achieving Premier League entity
and preventing relegation in the last season at Goodison Park is no small task
intimate knowledge of how the club and supporters work
and experience to pull them from the brink
This is not news that Leicester City fans will want to hear with Rob Tanner
Matt Slater and Ali Rampling reporting rival clubs are expecting the Foxes to be in bother with PSR again
PSR (which stands for profitability and sustainability
or financial rules to keep things simple) has been a problem for Leicester before
when they were charged for a breach in September
They successfully fought that charge on appeal
which centred on the fact Leicester had dropped out of the Premier League and into the Championship in the period under investigation
But if they have another breach this time around
the Premier League and EFL are both expected to be more robust with the club
We should know if that is the case by Monday at the earliest but either way
flying so close to the limit on the financial rules is a cautionary tale for any other clubs planning to consistently spend big
Will Leicester City be charged by the Premier League for a PSR breach
Here’s a European deal that has some bearing on the Premier League if you are an Arsenal fan
Former Gunners academy graduate Mika Biereth is on the move
with AS Monaco having agreed a fee with Sturm Graz for the forward
$13.4m) price for the 21-year-old includes an additional €2m in potential add-ons
and Arsenal would be due a percentage of the transfer fee
That’s because they built a sell-on clause in the deal they negotiated with Sturm Graz when Biereth joined Monaco in the summer

Not to say ‘we told you so’ but earlier this week
we shared our top 10 EFL talents to watch in January and beyond
One of the young stars on that list was Millwall’s Romain Esse
who is reportedly wanted by Crystal Palace for his talents on the wing
they had better be prepared to write a big cheque for the 19-year-old after Millwall boss Alex Neil said any move would be for “significant money.”
Here’s what Neil told BBC London before their FA Cup game against Dagenham & Redbridge on Monday:
he’s certainly been one of our best performers this season
We don’t want to lose any of our best players but everybody understands the contract situation around Romain
“If he does move he’ll move for significant money
which from the club’s perspective will be brilliant business considering we could have lost him in the summer for free.”
There is more on Esse and the best EFL talent in our article below
EFL ones to watch in January transfer window: Rigg
Martin Dubravka’s future may have dominated this morning’s press conference
but Eddie Howe at least saw the lighter side of being reminded of his most embarrassing defeat as Newcastle United head coach
League One Cambridge United dumped Howe’s side out of the FA Cup in the third round
leaving his then-fledgling Newcastle tenure in borderline crisis
Ahead of hosting League Two Bromley at the same stage of the competition on Sunday
Howe was forced to reflect on that low point — which he feels in hindsight turned out to be a perverse positive; that it helped his relegation-threatened side focus on staying up
He actually started chuckling as soon as someone mentioned Cambridge today
💬 “I was waiting to see how long before that came up!”
which is unsurprising given Newcastle are on a run of seven consecutive wins
He borderline guffawed at a quip that should Dubravka need further convincing of the need to stay
he should send Sven Botman and Dan Burn — Newcastle’s monstrous centre-back pairing — along to speak with him
hopefully he is still laughing come Sunday evening
rather than crying after being on the wrong end of another humiliating giant-killing..
Well this spoils a fun idea – so hold off if you are halfway out the door to get a new Inter Miami shirt printed at your local sports shop
Neymar got everyone excited when he teased the return of ‘MSN’ which is Messi-Suarez-Neymar to anyone not around from 2014-2017
The trio tore up La Liga and the Champions League as an attacking front line for Barcelona and Neymar's comments seemed to suggest he’d been keen to revive it at some point
As Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are already playing together at Inter Miami
it planted the seed of Neymar one day heading to MLS
But according to Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano – and there’s a theme here as he was also at Barca at the same time as MSN – it is “impossible” due to the MLS salary cap rules
Neymar joining Inter Miami ‘impossible’ due to MLS salary cap – Javier Mascherano
has been speaking to Sky Deutschland about the prospect of extending Thomas Muller’s contract
is out of contract in the summer of 2025 and is yet to make a decision about his future
💬 “We have already spoken once and postponed this conversation until the future
but it will probably be the shortest conversation..
because Thomas doesn’t need to negotiate much
He knows how this club works — from A to Z
It is a great help to have a player like that in the squad.”
Muller is 35 and now has a reduced playing role at Bayern
He has made just four starts in the Bundesliga this season and appeared 11 times from the bench
Arne Slot was of course asked about Liverpool’s reported interest in signing standout Napoli forward
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia — as well as Harvey Elliott’s future amid his lack of game time at Anfield this season
💬 “What I make of that is that it’s January
I said after the West Ham game ‘don’t disappoint me
please come up with all these clubs and all these players that have interest from us or the ones that don’t play a lot for us
at the end of the window it’s clear almost all of these stories weren’t true
Good news for Newcastle United this morning
with England goalkeeper Nick Pope “not far away” from returning to action
our correspondent Chris Waugh reports that Howe is still hopeful Martin Dubravka can be convinced to stay beyond January as Pope’s team-mate
Dubravka is entering the final six months of his contract and has been heavily linked with a move to Saudi Pro League side
Here is what Howe has been saying this morning:
he’s part of what we’re trying to do and he’s playing well
Any player who is coming out of contract in the summer
we can come to some sort of agreement with him.”
I was not expecting that sort of statement judging by the noises we were hearing from Newcastle at the start of the week
Newcastle host League Two Bromley in the FA Cup this weekend
with Odysseas Vlachodimos set to deputise in goal
Nick Pope ‘not far away’ from injury return as Eddie Howe hopeful Martin Dubravka stays at Newcastle
Our Liverpool correspondent James Pearce has been in with Arne Slot
as he talks ahead of their low-key FA Cup third round tie against League Two side
In short it sounds like good news on the fitness of Dominik Szoboszlai and Jarell Quansah
As for the recent transfer speculation on Federico Chiesa
Harvey Elliott and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia… Slot was giving little away
You will have the quotes from Slot in here when we have them — but there is plenty to go at
And if you’re now seeing Kvaradona’s name above and wondering where on earth that came from
then David Ornstein’s piece below will answer your question
Liverpool could consider Khvicha Kvaratskhelia transfer from Napoli
The good news is we’re going to be hearing from a fair few managers today — and not because they’ve just lost or gained employment
It’s Friday and generally that means preview press conference day ahead of the weekend’s matches
Liverpool’s Arne Slot and Newcastle boss Eddie Howe have already been speaking this morning
as well as everyone else of relevance that speaks today
it sounds like Slot is playing it cool over a number of transfer links to have emerged in the last 24 hours
a very happy Friday to you and welcome along for another day of transfer window chatter and football news discussion
Some people suggested to me yesterday that it was a quiet one — but it felt busy enough for me
and there is plenty that will spill into today as the weekend’s football starts to take some of the focus away from player recruitment
It’s Michael Bailey here to steer us through the coming hours
with Nancy Froston joining me soon and the rest of the team working hard in the background
There is already plenty for you to catch up on below
And don’t forget to email us your thoughts on what’s going on too
We’ll be keeping a close eye on the livebloguk@theathletic.com inbox
this one came through late on yesterday as Everton parted company with Sean Dyche
It is a difficult situation now for the new owners
who took over less than a month ago with the club sitting 16th in the Premier League table
David Ornstein has reported that David Moyes is at the top of the potential candidates
but whoever steps up will have a job on their hands
At least they will also have an FA Cup run to enjoy
Everton beat League One side Peterborough United 2-0 at Goodison Park last night
Highly rated managers often disappear off the market quickly
as we saw with West Ham having snapped up Graham Potter almost before they had sacked Julen Lopetegui

Will Manchester City seal the deal for Vitor Reis
We reported their progress on a deal for the Palmeiras defender yesterday and they have also been linked with moves for Omar Marmoush and Abdukodir Khusanov this month
City have an agreement in place with the player and are negotiating over a fee with the Brazilian club valuing the 18-year-old at upwards of £25million (€30.1m
the idea is for Reis to join up with Pep Guardiola’s side as a first-team signing but at the moment
it is unclear whether he would arrive in January or later this year
would like him to join as soon as possible
If they have a breakthrough on that deal or any others today
"You see how CONMEBOL views the offence of racism
The fans of an opposing team racially abused an 18-year-old soccer player
the governing body of the sport (football in South America)
Palmeiras president Leila Mejdalani Pereira blasted the organization
saying the punishment was too lenient for the act of blatant racism
According to ESPN, striker Luighi spoke about the racial abuse he and his team suffered at a recent game against Cerro Porteno. A fan made racist gestures toward the players of the Palmeiras club
Luighi broke down in tears when describing the monkey sounds coming from the opposing team and fans
A post shared by Wear The Peace® (@wearthepeace)
Luighi made a statement on his Instagram account regarding the incident
And it’s the same pain that all Blacks have felt throughout history
Today’s episode leaves scars and needs to be dealt with as it is: a crime
It’s a question that I hope won’t need to be asked at some point
A post shared by Luighi (@luighihanri)
CONMEBOL also banned the fans from attending future home games during the Libertadores under-20 tournament
The punishment for Cerro Porteno did not sit well with Pereira
She criticized the organization for how they meted out larger fines for what she deems as lighter offenses
I would like to express my indignation at CONMEBOL’s penalty of $50,000 and closed gates,” she expressed to TNT Sports
“If you’re a minute late entering the pitch
She stated that she and other clubs had forwarded a letter to FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association)
she said she spoke to CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez
who assured her that the punishment would be strict
but she disagreed with his level of strictness
“After I gave the interview that everyone saw
[And you can see that] because of the sanction that CONMEBOL gave for this incident
I have no doubt that this is an incentive for new cases of racism to occur.”
Pereira also threatened to remove the team from CONMEBOL and join with the larger governing body of the sport
“I’ll even throw out an idea … why not think about joining Concacaf?” she said
“I think that’s the only way they will respect Brazilian football
because Brazilian football isn’t being respected by CONMEBOL.”

“Today I say goodbye to a club that marked an unforgettable stage in my career and in my life
my first experience as a professional away from home," Torres said in a club statement
my teammates and all the people who are part of this club for the constant support and trust from the first day
I leave with pride for what we achieved together and with the satisfaction of having left my mark on this club that will always be special to me
The 24-year-old Uruguayan winger was heavily linked with a move to Europe before the 2024 season
Torres scored 17 goals and six assists in 40 games across all competitions and helped Orlando City reach the Eastern Conference final
where they were beaten by the New York Red Bulls.
While Torres’ goals will be missed in Orlando
there has also been a sense that the forward has plateaued in his production
After scoring nine goals and eight assists in 33 regular season games
Torres managed 14 goals and three assists in 30 MLS regular season games in 2023 and then 14 goals and four assists in 32 regular season games this season
his market value has been unchanged at €14m since August 2023 and would have likely dropped in future updates
underlining the fact that the time was now for Orlando to cash in on a key asset
