and adjusting to his new reality in Tijuana
A former mayor with a taste for exotic animals is keeping a tradition that many consider savage alive
Is a plate of food ever just a plate of food
actually I was thinking about that yesterday
I actually now have lived exactly half of my life in Chula Vista
and the other half… I’m going to be 34 soon
Thornburgh: You’re getting real close on it
my family is from Cuernavaca and Mexico City
I didn’t have very much of a TJ-San Diego life
It was more like Chula Vista-San Diego to Mexico City-Cuernavaca
Thornburgh: Very different style than Tijuana
My parents did try really hard to make us travel as kids
because they were realizing that we were being
but that we were starting to have little accents
I think that’s why I moved to Mexico as an adult
I was a typical little jerk: “It smells,” and also I was in Mexico before NAFTA
“Where’s there a McDonald’s?” My grandma didn’t have a phone
I’m on the fourth floor.” For me
there were a lot of things I couldn’t do in the U.S
that my grandma would tell me to do: “Hey
go get me some cigarettes and Coke bottles,” and she would give me money and just tell me to go down the road
I would get picked up by child services if they saw me with cigarettes
Thornburgh: In the past you had talked about having a health crisis in the family
While everyone was getting ready for college
I just always felt like that wasn’t really what I was going to do
I did get into City College and I studied Chicano Studies
and that’s actually the first thing that drove me to put up art
But I was all about taking care of my mother
but it was in the middle of the economic crisis
and I stayed in my house in Chula Vista until I could
It was a definite downfall of my life as a spoiled kid
to just be kicked into reality and realize I had nothing
that I had to figure out how I was going to make a life for myself
It wasn’t right away that I thought I was going to be an artist
Do it yourself—dedicated artists and musicians
That’s what’s really cool about Tijuana
Thornburgh: So it started as a social connection for you
you were hanging out with artists and kind of through that getting a sense that it was attainable
and it influenced me just to know she was a woman
I took some stickers from a radio station from Tijuana and I put them up
I remember thinking this should be my work I’m putting up
and I know every single wall that people walk by that I’m going to put a wheatpaste up
and that’s how I started getting the idea
Tijuana has been untouched for about eight years
Nobody’s done anything aside from graffiti
and I pretty much just got the guts up to do it
to just run out in the middle of the night with other guys that I ended up meeting that were like
we’re doing this too.” That’s how it sprung up
Thornburgh: The act of going out on the street and doing this wheatpaste
and me being a girl running around in that time
Eventually I started going out with some other homies that would show me the ways
They watch out for me while I put things up and vice versa
and then coming back and putting things up again
At that time I was also getting a bunch of tattoos
I think I was at that age where I was just trying to get a lot of me out
Thornburgh: You don’t miss that kind of adrenaline rush of doing art that way
I get the same adrenaline rush now with stress
I have to get this done because I have all these clients expecting this of me
Now it’s like I transferred that rush into a more responsible work thing
Thornburgh: That says some dark things about getting older too
that you’re replacing an adrenaline rush for stress
but now I eat well and have a vitamin and a probiotic beforehand
but at the same time I take this more seriously now that it’s a serious career for me
“Maybe this is going to happen.” Now it’s “No
It can feel inevitable that you would be able to make a career out of this
but you really can’t take that for granted
Panca: I always think of myself and the guy that sells corn in the bucket
but maybe that guy has more work ethic and discipline
Thornburgh: Sounds like a good way to keep it humble
Panca: I have a show in February at Bread & Salt
That’s a huge amount of work because it’s a pretty big giant room
Also it has to be an updated version of what I’m doing
and everything I filled it with I felt was a combo of old
I want to be a more updated and centralized idea
It’s going to involve the giant indoor mural and some installations
I’m also doing a book because I have all these photos that I find in Tijuana
Tijuana’s like the dumpster of the U.S.
There are a lot of albums that I’ve found that have photos of—who knows
Thornburgh: What are you seeing in Tijuana that’s changing in the art scene
but there wasn’t really content coming out
I’ve noticed all those people that were just messing around
a lot of them kind of started taking things a little more seriously
Thornburgh: There’s a lot of fucking beer
There were a lot of people that were little fans of mine five years ago
and those kids now—because I followed them when they followed me—I look at their work and I think “Holy shit
These guys are really good.” They’re really
I’m already starting to ask them to come to festivals and be considered for things because they’re going for it
I see the talent that was kind of stagnant for a while
A lot of them are kind of just going for it
I see a lot of potential right now for artists
Thornburgh: So it’s the whole next crop coming up
This year and next year you’re going to see a lot of it pop up in everything
There’s a lot of violence in Tijuana
but it’s so odd at the same time—the subculture of going out is blooming
Thornburgh: There’s no direct correlation between violence and going out
but it’s poor people that are involved in drugs
and they happen to be around when something goes down
I’ve been to places where somebody got shot in the bar upstairs
and the body’s down there with a blanket over it
I don’t want to stay there permanently
because I think things will get thicker and harder

A looming crisis in Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe vineyards
it's hard to decide where to start — until you think like a kid
The 40-foot slide spans the entire length of the central staircase at The New Children's Museum and could serve as a makeshift entry point for the Tijuana-based artist Panca's new installation, part of the museum's artist residency program
play-ready and community-centered works of contemporary art by Wes Bruce
RELATED: Panca: ‘Ni De Aquí, Ni De Allá’
When Panca — otherwise known as Paola Villaseñor — was brought in as the 2020 artist in residence
things quickly ground to a halt as the pandemic kept the museum closed
But it was also a time to get inspiration and feedback flowing to and from families
marked by the signature faces on her canvas
And much of the way the faces in "El Más Allá" are built came from conversations with families during the pandemic
where Panca tried to get a sense of how people were coping
"The characters she ultimately finalized are meant to be reflections
manifestations of how people were feeling during the COVID-19 pandemic," Dickerson said
There are several named characters in the work
each with personalities and something to relate to — though the specifics of the mythology of the work will even be known by kids in the exhibit
is manifest primarily in a large crawl-in pink-hued sculpture
"Pinky is anxious partly because Pinky spends a lot of time thinking about how other people are feeling
and seeing things through other people's perspectives
so Pinky makes art to work through some of these anxieties," Dickerson said while lying down inside Pinky
Maslow is an even bigger blob-like structure coated in expandable foam that kids can play inside. Maslow is named after the psychologist Abraham Maslow, who developed the hierarchy of needs — and the manifestation in Panca's work is also inspired by a Nikki de Saint Phalle work called "Golem."
Panca's imagination is magical and strange
childlike and complicated — while also being approachable and transferrable
One kid's idea of any of these characters may be totally different
"El Más Allá" translates to "the beyond." The idea is for the exhibition to make the kids feel understood wherever they are
but also to transport them to a wild and inventive world
If you can peel your eyes away from the vivid art
with massive foam shapes and blocks that can be constructed into mini dwellings
Panca worked on the exhibition as soon as she was able to travel to San Diego and dig in
beginning with a turquoise backdrop that is almost entirely concealed in the finished product
All repeated across the 2,500 square-foot installation
Panca's disruptive and expressive works interact with the walls and spaces by bringing them to life
and she was further influenced by nineties cartoons that bordered on the grotesque
like "Ren and Stimpy." Panca is a 2021 recipient of the San Diego Art Prize
Not only has her "Smile" mural graced the museum's entry bridge with rainbows and gleeful mouths for years
but Panca remembers coming to the museum as a child
painting the outdoor truck was one of her first ever experiences painting
and part of why Panca's installation has no end date yet
"El Más Allá" will be one of the "anchor" works in the museum for a long time — at least three years but potentially longer
"I desire to create these convertible spaces that kids can grow up with
and can actually project whatever they're feeling onto it at that moment
For me that's what contemporary art does," Dickerson said
The museum has been in operation in the current form since 2008
Their contemporary art installations are collaborative
families and community groups like Casa Familiar
the City Heights and Skyline Hills public libraries
Barrio Logan College Institute and the Vista-based Solutions for Change
It also pairs artists with museum designers and playworkers
who can offer insight on the "playability" of a particular work of art to address whether and how kids may play with something — both ideological and risk-related in nature
Since reopening this summer after a long pause during COVID-19 restrictions, NCM is currently requiring masks indoors for all visitors over the age of two
"Kids' play has changed," Dickerson noted of the pandemic's impact on children
Some of the museum's visitors have spent more than half their life navigating pandemic restrictions
But she also hopes that play is the thing that helps children rediscover their relationship to art
"Play offers you that opportunity to have some level of control over your own body and behavior
and I think that's kind of what's saving kids these days," Dickerson said
"El Más Allá" opens Thursday
Objective—To evaluate perinuclear anti-neutrophilic cytoplasmic autoantibody (pANCA) status in Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers (SCWTs) and SCWT-Beagle crossbred dogs and to correlate pANCA status of dogs with clinicopathologic variables of protein-losing enteropathy (PLE)
Animals—13 SCWTs and 8 SCWT-Beagle crossbred dogs in a research colony and a control group comprising 7 dogs with X-linked hereditary nephropathy and 12 healthy SCWTs > 9 years old
Procedures—Samples were obtained from dogs in the research colony every 6 months
and urea nitrogen; fecal concentration of α-proteinase inhibitor; and urinary protein-to-creatinine ratios were determined and correlated with pANCA status
Results—20 of 21 dogs in the research colony had positive results for pANCAs at a minimum of 2 time points
and 18 of 21 dogs had definitive evidence of disease
None of the control dogs had positive results for pANCAs
A positive result for pANCAs was significantly associated with hypoalbuminemia
and pANCAs preceded the onset of hypoalbuminemia on an average of 2.4 years
Sensitivity and specificity for use of pANCAs to predict development of PLE or PLN were 0.95 (95% confidence interval
0.72 to 1.00) and 0.8 (95% confidence interval
Conclusions and Clinical Relevance—Most dogs in this study affected with PLE
or both had positive results for pANCAs before clinicopathologic evidence of disease was detected
pANCAs may be useful as an early noninvasive test of disease in SCWTs
we hypothesized that pANCAs play a role in the development of PLE and PLN diseases in SCWTs
The purpose of the study reported here was to determine whether pANCAs are associated with clinicopathologic markers of disease in SCWTs and to evaluate their usefulness as a possible early marker of PLE and PLN
The portion of the study involving client-owned dogs was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Royal Veterinary College
and owners signed a consent form allowing the determination of pANCA in serum samples obtained from their dogs
Serum samples from 13 purebred SCWTs and 8 SCWT-Beagle crossbred dogs from a research colony were retrospectively tested for pANCAs
The purebred dogs in this colony were the result of breeding 2 founder SCWTs
One affected male SCWT and a clinically normal female Beagle were mated to yield the 8 crossbred dogs
all dogs had been observed daily and clinicopathologic examinations had been performed every 3 months
Serum samples for the study were obtained from all dogs beginning when dogs were 6 months old and
every 6 months until the time of the study reported here (n = 9 dogs) or until they were euthanatized because of progression of disease (12)
Mean ± SD age of the 12 dogs at the time of euthanasia was 6.93 ± 2.5 years (median
Eighteen of 21 dogs had convincing evidence of clinical disease of PLE
with the onset of disease defined as persistent hypoalbuminemia (< 2.4 g/dL) or proteinuria (UP:C > 1.0) during a period of at least 1 year
and creatinine; SUN concentrations; concentration of α-proteinase inhibitor in the feces; and UP:C were determined and correlated with pANCA status
all 7 dogs had an increase in UP:C (mean ± SD
5 dogs had an increase in serum creatinine concentration (0.9 to 9.4 mg/dL; reference range
and 5 dogs had a low serum albumin concentration (1.6 to 2.9 g/dL; reference range
serum samples were obtained from 12 healthy SCWTs that were ≥ 9 years old and that did not have any evidence of protein-losing disease
Mean ± SD age of these dogs was 10.3 ± 1.4 years (range
Serum samples were evaluated for evidence of pANCAs
Collection of blood samples from these dogs was performed as part of a clinical health check at the Royal Veterinary College in London
Medical history of each dog was obtained and revealed no evidence of food allergy or other diseases
Results of physical examination were unremarkable
serum biochemical analysis (including measurement of total protein and albumin concentrations)
and urinalysis of a midstream sample were within the respective reference ranges
pANCA assay—The pANCA status of each dog was determined by use of indirect immunofluorescence.8 Blood samples were collected into serum tubes, and serum was harvested and subsequently frozen at −20°C until analysis. Briefly, slides of canine granulocytes were incubated for 1 hour with serum (1:10 dilution) obtained from the dogs. Cells were washed, a secondary fluorescein isothiocyanate–labeled antibodya was added
and cells were allowed to incubate for 1 hour in a humid chamber at 22°C
slides were dried and mounted with fluorescence mounting medium
Slides were separately evaluated by use of fluorescence microscopy by 2 authors (KA and BL) who were unaware of the source of the sample
Sera from dogs that resulted in a specific pattern of perinuclear staining in granulocytes were considered to have positive results for pANCA
whereas no staining or an atypical staining pattern of granulocytes (including evidence of intranuclear staining) was considered a negative result for pANCAs
Research colony SCWTs—A total of 259 samples were evaluated for pANCA status
which represented a mean of 12 samples/dog (range
6 had positive results for pANCAs at each measurement point during their lives
5 developed definitive evidence of disease (1 dog with PLE
One purebred SCWT had negative results for pANCAs throughout its life but developed definitive evidence of disease (euthanatized because of progressive PLN at 5 years of age)
The remaining 6 SCWTs had positive results for at least 2 samples during their lives (mean
25% [2 positive results for 8 samples] to 90% [9 positive results for 10 samples])
All 6 of these SCWTs developed definitive evidence of disease (2 dogs with PLN
None of the 8 SCWT-Beagle crossbred dogs had only positive or negative results for all tests conducted throughout their lives
all 8 of these dogs had positive results for pANCAs at least 4 times (mean
25% [4 positive results for 16 samples] to 88% [14 positive results for 16 samples])
Six of these 8 dogs developed definitive evidence of disease (1 dog with PLE
When considering all dogs with positive and negative results for pANCAs throughout their lives
11 of 18 (61%) dogs had negative results for pANCAs for samples obtained early during their lives
but they seroconverted before developing evidence of diseases
These dogs continued to have positive results for pANCAs once PLE or PLN (or both) was diagnosed
Control dogs—None of the 7 dogs with X-linked hereditary nephropathy or 12 healthy SCWTs > 9 years old had positive results for pANCAs
Correlation of pANCA status with clinicopathologic variables—We did not detect a significant association between a positive pANCA status and a decrease in serum globulin concentration (P = 0.5)
increase in serum creatinine concentration (P = 0.5)
or increase in fecal concentration of α-proteinase inhibitor (P = 0.2)
a positive pANCA status was significantly (P < 0.001) associated with hypoalbuminemia (< 2.4 g/dL) at the time serum samples were obtained
Figure 1—Box-and-whisker plots representing age at first positive pANCA test result
age at onset of clinical disease (defined as persistent hypoalbuminemia [< 2.4 g/dL])
and age at euthanasia (n = 12 dogs) for 18 dogs affected with PLE
The horizontal line in each box represents the median; the top and bottom of each box represent the 75th and 25th percentiles
respectively; and the whiskers represent the 95th and 5th percentiles
Mean ± SD age at first pANCA test result was 1.69 ± 1.2 years
mean age at onset of clinical disease was 4.19 ± 1.6 years
and mean age at euthanasia was 6.93 ± 2.5 years
Citation: American Journal of Veterinary Research 69, 10; 10.2460/ajvr.69.10.1301
Sensitivity and specificity for positive result for pANCA testing to predict PLE or PLN in SCWTs—Calculated sensitivity and specificity for use of pANCA testing to predict disease in the tested dogs (18 affected dogs vs 12 healthy SCWTs > 9 years old) were 0.95 (95% CI
Positive predictive value for the test was 0.86 (95% CI
and negative predictive value was 0.92 (95% CI
The calculated overall accuracy was 0.86 (95% CI
which is similar to the predicted accuracy for our data reported here
Typically, dogs in our study had the first positive results for pANCAs 1 to 2 years before onset of hypoalbuminemia. This may prove helpful in identifying and monitoring dogs that will develop disease later in life and may increase opportunities for early treatment, such as feeding a hypoallergenic diet to young dogs.3 Additionally
early detection of dogs that will eventually develop PLN or PLE may allow breeders to gradually decrease the incidence of these diseases by removing animals predisposed to these diseases from the breeding pool
pANCA titers did not correlate with clinical activity of disease
Analysis of results of the study reported here suggested that pANCAs may be associated with PLE and PLN in SCWTs
Larger studies in which investigators evaluate the pathogenesis of protein-losing diseases in SCWTs will be necessary to elucidate the role of pANCAs in the development of these diseases

Each month in 2023, we’re asking a local artist to recreate one of our iconic covers from the past 75 years. For July, we tapped celebrated binational artist Panca to reimagine San Diego Mag‘s February 1965 cover. Check out the recreation here and learn more about Paris in the Q&A below:
Growing up during the ’80s-’90s with Gen X around me I
was exposed to weird MTV cartoons quite young as well as having frequent visits to museums in Mexico City when we would visit family
Films from the golden era of cinema in México with my parents very-much influenced me as well.My life came to a cathartic point where I was forced to look inward and I realized it was the one constant thing I really enjoyed and I could express myself with much more clarity and depth
I was able to accept it as my own so it was easier to lean into it
The environment I was in was quite bizarre so it allowed me to mirror my surroundings
It gave me the same comfort I longed for as a bored child surrounded by adults
Now as an adult myself I realize it’s part of many things much deeper than my personality
I really admire artists who chase their dreams with genuine love
I’m devoted to being present and being supportive of them
I’m in awe of women confronting stigma related to dealing with generational trauma and also cultural or social dynamics
Some female artists that I constantly refer to creatively are Susan Sontag
Diane Arbus—she went there; she saw a side that was also beautiful but not photographed
such strength,” and they inspired me greatly
When I started it was a boys club so I have nothing but respect
David Alfaro Siqueiros has always been a master as well as that generation of painters during that time in Mexico
I saw her films during my teens and it was really impactful to me
It allowed me to see that pain could be made into something quite brilliant and beautiful.Nina Simone (I mean wow)
Flor Garduño…a photographer that has work [that is] so dreamlike and ahead of her time
I mean this list could be epic and never ending
But Keith Haring was an artist I was able to learn about before his death and it really spoke to me
I really have just learned that I follow the same idea that the art is for everyone and along with Jean-Michel Basquiat
I also saw that grit was the secret ingredient
I think that my art strongly reflects the Southern California experience but also that of a binational person living
had skateboarding posters all over my walls and especially the colors
raw in your face images from skateboard culture totally influenced my style
The color palette alone from then is very much in my work
Those neons pop out and the fact that I grew up close to IB and now that I am back and I live closer to Barrio Logan-Sherman Heights
it’s a very different experience and don’t have a specific style that can be categorized
Yet the people of the community spill into my work and it’s the same as when I was in Tijuana
Right now I am doing a pop up with Modelo beer and that will happen this summer
I am going to be finishing the new phase of El Más Allá which will open this summer to kids and complete my installation there which is a big deal because I started during the pandemic and it’s been a hard process for me
At one point I had this ritual of after a show or big mural taking the red eye from Tijuana to Yucatán-Quintana Roo and just disconnecting for a week but it’s just a whole thing nowadays and I am enjoying going to Valle de Guadalupe for a nice day or weekend trip
but I am reconnecting with San Diego and finding a nice day at Lafayette or just the beach is relaxing
I’m walking the harbor and enjoying that.I’m a fan of taking the train to LA to just have a museum day or go see a show and then come back
It’s close and I get to relax seeing the ocean along the way
I am a big hermit who really enjoys being home and I get to be with my senior pets and recharge by watching a film
Right now mostly around San Diego and the Tijuana/Baja region
Mortis Studio in Golden hill and a solo pop up show at Mi Vida Logan this summer
I’m excited that this summer I’m working with Modelo beer on several pop-up events in the community

Following the requirements of the initiative
the official name of the Datsun brand will be Datsun Nusantara
with Datsun GO+ Panca as the new model's official name
Watch Video here.
The word "Panca" is derived from global naming of Datsun GO – GO may be translated as "five" in Japanese and Panca also meaning "five" in Bahasa Indonesia. The "+" in the name Datsun GO+ is reflective of the extra space in the third row for either passengers or luggage which allows the 5+2 MPV to accommodate two extra occupants.
Datsun GO+ Panca is the first of its kind in terms of price and value in the Indonesian family car market, and in the LCGC. Indonesian customers can start placing orders today for the new car, with first deliveries scheduled from June.
The five-door, 5+2 MPV Datsun GO+ Panca is powered by a 1.2-liter, 68-horsepower engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Starting at 85 million IDR on the road Jakarta, Datsun GO+ Panca will revolutionize the segment with best-in-class roominess, being the only model to offer a spacious and flexible three-row interior at this price.
"This is a proud moment for us at Nissan Motor Indonesia, with the approval of the LCGC license and the launch of Datsun GO+ in Indonesia," said Toru Hasegawa, corporate vice president, Nissan Motor Corporation and president director, PT. Nissan Motor Indonesia. "This is another step to show our commitment to this country, and I am confident the new Datsun GO+ Panca will grab the hearts of our customers here."
Prices for the three grades and its derivatives range from 85 million IDR to 103 million IDR on the roads of Jakarta and will be available in five colors. Datsun GO+ Panca initially goes on sale at 39 dealerships, and by the end of the fiscal year, will be available at 95 dealerships nationwide.
About DatsunNissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced the return of the Datsun brand, Nissan's third global brand, alongside Nissan and Infiniti, in March 2012. Datsun will provide a sustainable motoring experience to optimistic up-and-coming customers in high-growth markets. Datsun represents 80 years of accumulated Japanese car-making expertise and is an important part of Nissan's DNA. Datsun starts sales in India, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa from 2014.
Datsun HistoryDatsun originated in Japan as DAT-GO (the DAT-car) almost a century ago in 1914. The word DAT means 'lightning-fast' in Japanese but is also a reference to the first letters of family names of the three financiers who supported the business at the time: Den, Aoyama and Takeuchi. Using the same logic, it was promoted as Durable, Attractive and Trustworthy, or DAT for short.
In 1933, Nissan's founding father Yoshisuke Aikawa took over the business with a vision of "mobility for all." The introduction of a lightweight, economical yet resilient car to meet the aspirations of young Japanese people in the early 1930s was named the "son of DAT" – Datson - which later changed to Datsun. Local engineering and mass-production made the founder's dream a reality.

This weekend, binational artist Paola Villaseñor, known to most of us as Panca, unveils new work at Barrio Logan's Bread & Salt gallery, home of her striking 2017 ice cream cone exterior mural that's become a recognizable part of San Diego's skyline
"I am the Architect of My Own Misfortune," is building-wide at the Bread & Salt campus and includes large-scale works
massive canvases and what Panca refers to as "found photo interventions."
"It's a lot about duality," Panca said of the show
It's about taking responsibility for the good and the bad things that happen to you
She points to the space between having control over individual fortunes (or misfortunes) and the things that are out of our control
Panca has lived in Tijuana since she was a teenager
Her Tijuana home is where she generally works
almost all of the works were created in a studio on-site at Bread & Salt
providing its own set of challenges but lifted her from the redundancies of working from home
"The work in this show is very raw and present," she said
"I had a chance to pass over whatever I felt from leaving my bed to walking into the studio."
The newness of the work — and ambitious scope of filling the massive space — still feels uniquely Panca
and her characteristic faceless eyes and mouths almost obsessively bring life (and maybe a form of fortune) to unexpected things
Panca is also the new artist-in-residence at the New Children's Museum, where her work is already prominently on display in the "SMILE" mural
"I am The Architect of My Own Misfortune" opens Saturday at Bread & Salt with a reception and live music from 6-9 p.m
The event coincides with Saturday evening's Barrio Art Crawl

5 Jul 2018Competitors were puzzled long ago when plastic packaging company Panca Budi Group began putting barcodes on its plastic bags when they were mostly used in packing wet and dry goods in Indonesia’s traditional markets or pasar
Panca Budi produces hundreds of millions of bags monthly
with more than 7,000 items being supplied domestically and globally
“Putting those barcodes and having all our supplies and inventory computerised mean that our customers never have to worry about shortage or quality inconsistency,” says Panca Budi president Djonny Taslim
Taslim started as a general merchant distributing plastic bags made from polyethylene and polypropylene
His visionary and pioneering mind led Panca Budi to become the first company to put a brand on plastic packaging
and the first in the industry to obtain Halal certification
sugar or cooking oil bought in small amounts
Panca Budi’s products come with the elasticity
density and heat resistance that suit every need there is in the market
“Indonesia is poised for massive growth across industries – and we look forward to exciting times ahead with potential partners and investors”Vicky Taslim
we mean the whole spectrum – from the biggest supermarket and convenience store chains including Carrefour and Alfamart
right to the traditional wet and dry pasar
which remains to be the backbone of the Indonesian economy,” says Vicky Taslim

A chilling scene unfolded in Jakarta on Friday as a man accused of murdering his four children was brought to the crime scene to reenact the harrowing moments when he used his hands to suffocate them
covering the mouth and nose of the victims
leading to their deaths due to oxygen deprivation on December 3.
The distressing sequence of events began at a boarding house in Jagakarsa
Panca arranged the bodies of his children on a mattress in ascending order of their ages
placing a family photograph atop the eldest child
conducted as part of standard criminal investigation procedures
a police investigator recounted deposition documents
stating that "he squatted while carrying out the killings
each taking approximately 15 minutes."
Panca also reconstructed the moment he allegedly filmed the bodies using a cellphone
The reenactment drew significant attention from the neighborhood and the media
with one person from the crowd expressing disbelief
their mother was undergoing treatment at a hospital for severe injuries after she was attacked by Panca a day earlier
when neighbors grew suspicious of a foul smell emanating from the house on Kebayoran Raya Street.
They forced a door and found Panca in the bathroom with self-inflicted stab wounds
and the children's bodies in the bedroom
Panca has been charged with premeditated murder and child abuse
Police also slapped him with the domestic violence charges
The chicken is marinaded with red peppers and the potatoes are cut fresh in-house
The restaurant offers a slow-cooked pork shoulder sandwich that contains sweet potato chips

But one constant in the South-East Asian nation of some 17,000 islands is its traditional markets
despite the proliferation of restaurant chains and supermarkets
Taken as a whole, these markets offer enormous opportunity for entrepreneurs. That’s exactly what Djonny Taslim saw back in 1979, when he founded Panca Budi Idaman
The company manufactures and sells high-grade plastic bags for market traders and plastic food packaging for manufacturers
with its sprawling distribution network reaching all corners of the country as well as several international markets
most plastic items in Indonesia were imported from Singapore
“It seemed to me there was a very good opportunity to start a plastic packaging business in Indonesia,” he says
That’s not to say it was easy to establish the wide reach the company has today
Ninety-five per cent of Panca Budi’s finished products are used in traditional markets – something that has required forging huge numbers of personal connections with independent traders and others
then the trust is always there,” Djonny explains
“Due to the uniqueness and complexity of dealing with our customers all over Indonesia
the barrier of entry to our industry for multinational or even other local companies is much higher.”
Due to the uniqueness and complexity of dealing with our customers all over Indonesia
the barrier of entry to our industry for multinational or even other local companies is much higher
The plastic packaging market in Indonesia is so big and so complex that for Panca Budi
competition means something different than it does for other companies
“I always consider our competitors to be business partners,” Djonny says
you just have to make friends with everyone: the customers
Maintaining good relationships with suppliers is intertwined with maintaining good customer relationships
By ensuring that the customer is never disappointed with the quality of the product
the company also ensures it can honour its commitment to its own suppliers
Panca Budi has a 24-hour delivery guarantee so that customers can always be sure they will have enough bags
which can run out relatively quick amid surges of shoppers
“Because our product is fairly fast-moving
there will be a problem if supply is hindered there
It makes it difficult for them to sell things to their customers
So we always keep that commitment,” Djonny shares
I always consider our competitors to be business partners
Another way the company maintains trust with customers
and ensures the long-term strength of those relationships
is by being supportive when their businesses are going through tough times
So Panca Budi is always ready to be flexible with payment terms and contract conditions if a customer is affected by such a disaster
“We keep supporting them so that they can get back on their feet,” Djonny says
“We can do things like just reschedule their payments.”
One key challenge the company faces is adapting to the global shift away from using disposable plastics – something the Indonesian government has indicated it wants to support more locally
Panca Budi has already started recycling operations in its factories where it uses waste from its own product cycles to make new products
Because plastics that come into contact with food have to be of a certain quality
the company has yet to start making its products from things like recycled household waste
But Djonny reveals that there are talks underway with a reputable European company to supply Panca Budi with technology that enables the production of food-grade plastics from lower-grade sources
Panca Budi’s people are its most vital asset
“Those people packing things at the factory level
dealing with the machinery day to day; they are key to the success of our company
I always appreciate the contributions of everybody,” he says
One way of showing that appreciation is to give employees the option of owning stock in the company
which floated on the Indonesia Stock Exchange about four years ago
it also offered daily snacks and tea to staff as a way of showing its thanks for their work
While Panca Budi’s customers may technically be businesses
Djonny does not like to think of the trade he does as B2B
He feels the B2C model is far more relevant because of the company’s emphasis on delivering consistent quality at the point of sale
It’s not easy to go and sell to all those small shops in the traditional markets
and then you develop the relationship slowly
“The B2B market in Indonesia is having problems with receiving and collection because the economy is not doing too well,” Djonny reveals
We sell to shops in the traditional market
Underpinning that success is a distribution network that has been built over 43 years
“It’s not easy to go and sell to all those small shops in the traditional markets,” Djonny says
and then you develop the relationship slowly.”

s Bali celebrates the once a decade event of Panca Wali Krama
the island’s art community is reminded of I Gusti Nyoman Lempad
a celebrated artist who died during the Balinese Hindu ritual period in 1978
Lempad was a one of a kind Balinese artistic maestro
the renowned painter and sculptor was also known for his designs of traditional Balinese buildings and talent for crafting ritual objects
it is surprising that only a small group of people knew when Lempad passed away at the age of 131 in Ubud
I got the news about Lempad’s passing only in the middle of May,” recalled Anak Agung Made Djelantik
a doctor and cultural expert who was good friends with Lempad
there was no knocking of bamboo to signal his death and no one paid any condolence calls
This was because when Lempad breathed his last breath
held once every ten years based on the Balinese calendar
is the island’s second largest ritual after Eka Dasa Rudra
Balinese Hindus are currently observing Panca Wali Krama
is a grand ceremony at the Pura Agung Besakih temple in Karangasem aimed at achieving harmony in nature and society
Panca Wali Krama is the only time Hindu adherents on the island “are forbidden to die”
People are prohibited from conducting purification activities connected with death
including the cremation ceremony of ngaben
If the deceased has a high position in society
such as being a sulinggih or pemangku (priest)
The body is to be laid out in the home and preserved with herbs
The only ritual permitted is the spraying of tirtha pemarisudha
Lempad’s death during Panca Wali Karma has long been a subject of discussion among those interested in the cultural history of Bali
“Every time Karya Agung Panca Wali Krama is in progress
I always remember Lempad,” said Suteja Neka
which has a pavilion dedicated to Lempad’s work
The official date of Lempad’s death is May 9
His body was given a pelebon (grand ngaben) ceremony in Ubud
which was widely covered by international media
Tens of thousands of Balinese people and artists from around the world attended the funeral
Among them was French and Spanish fashion designer Paloma Picasso
the daughter of 20th century painter Pablo Picasso
“Maestro Lempad’s funeral ceremony is much grander than that for my father,” Paloma said at the time
Australian filmmakers John Darling and Lorne Blair recorded the significant event for their acclaimed documentary
Lempad received numerous accolades for his artistic achievements
Among them are Anugerah Seni from the Indonesian government in 1970 and Dharma Kusuma from the Bali administration in 1982
His works are displayed in numerous museums around the globe
including Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam and the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden
The maestro is remembered through the Lempad Prize
an art award granted by the Sanggar Dewata studio to Indonesian visual artists with outstanding achievements
his house in Ubud was turned into a museum
prompting calls for the government to support the museum.
