Edward Parone on his 90th birthday at the Whitney Museum in New York
Though he never achieved the sort of fame that some playwrights and stage directors can attain with the right theater company or series of works
Parone was active in one of the most vibrant periods of American theater
a theater and television director who worked with such disparate writing and acting talents as Edward Albee
Parone was active in one of the most vibrant periods of American theater and at some of the most influential companies
including the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and the once-famed Albee-Barr-Wilder Playwrights Unit in New York City
“He had an incredible knack for pairing playwrights with the right actors and the right director,” said playwright and theater critic Harvey Perr
Perr said that though Parone may have always been in the shadow of more famous theatrical figures like artistic director Gordon Davidson and playwright Edward Albee
he never sought fame or fortune in the world of theater
“He wasn’t in it for fame,” she said by phone from her home in South Carolina on Monday
It was never about winning awards or who he knew
Parone was born to Italian immigrants in Hartford
His family lived near a vaudeville house and that may have played a role in his attraction to theater
Many credit him with discovering Albee after Parone read the playwright’s one-act
Parone began working at the Mark Taper Forum under Davidson in 1967
directing numerous plays there including John Guare’s Muzeeka and Tom Stoppard’s Travesties
Perr said Parone may still be best known for directing Jules Tasca’s The Mind With the Dirty Man in the early 1970s
“turned out to be one of the biggest commercial successes that the Taper ever had.”
Parone also directed such classic plays as Major Barbara
The Three Sisters and The Importance of Being Earnest at the Taper Forum
he also directed a number of episodes for various television series including Family and Knots Landing
Parone fell in love with New Mexico after visiting the state several times and decided
to retire and leave Los Angeles for the Santa Fe area
He lived on a farm in Nambé where he gardened
naming trees that he planted after members of his family and walking with his beloved dogs
Perr said that just last summer Parone helped him fashion an autobiographical theater piece
who briefly worked as a journalist for the Hartford Courant
was a frequent letter writer to The Santa Fe New Mexican
One of his more offbeat stints was as an assistant to film director John Huston on the 1961 contemporary Western The Misfits
Perr and Ladue both said Parone spoke well of Monroe’s professionalism
said by phone that Parone had a sweet but commanding voice
“He would call and read a story to me over the phone or talk to our pets over the phone and they would gave that head-cocked-to-the-side expression on their faces like they never heard anyone talk like that before,” she said
But it is the voice that goes with all of it that I shall miss the most.”

Harry Parone Stadium has been the home to Spring Valley High School football since 1970 (Photo by Jack Veltri)
High school football games in Richland School District Two will see big changes starting tonight
Fans will see new safety policies after a large fight erupted Sept
9 at Spring Valley High’s Harry Parone Stadium during a game with Ridge View High
all students must show a school ID and have a ticket
Students of the two schools playing also must enter through an identified student gate
anyone under 18 years old who can’t present a high school ID must be accompanied by an adult
Face coverings that completely cover a person’s face are not permitted
spectators must remain in their seats unless they are going to the restroom or concession stands
Fans are prohibited from standing and congregating on the concourse or near the concession stands
Entry gates will be closed and no fans will be admitted after halftime
the concession stands will close at the end of the third quarter
The changes were prompted by a fight involving three 17-year-olds during the Ridge View vs
None of the three who were initially arrested and charged attended a Richland Two school
with Ridge View being declared the winner with 11 minutes remaining in the third quarter
The three teens were banned from being on the grounds of any Richland Two school in the future
Four additional teens were arrested days later for their roles in the fight
Two 14-year-old and two 17-year-old Spring Valley students were charged and released to their parents
according to a Richland County Sheriff’s Department press release
Richland County Sheriff’s Department deputies were at the game
and other deputies arrived to assist with crowd control
There was no evidence of gunshots being fired
“It’s not difficult for us to get extra units over there should something occur,” Hart said

2024TAMPA — It’s neither a flock nor a swarm nor a school
a lesser-known term that might come in handy in the here and now
That’s because the Eagles will be out en masse Monday
their nests bustling throughout the bay area
They’ll gather at Mugs Sports Bar & Grill in Clearwater
and Tampa Joe’s in Hillsborough County’s northwest nook
As sure as the fat grams in a Philly cheesesteak
convocations — for tailgate revelry around Raymond James Stadium on Monday

Monday night’s NFC Wild-Card Game will be the teams’ sixth playoff encounter
this postseason series has featured history and heartbreak
Tampa Bay’s first playoff triumph — and Tom Brady’s last — came against the Eagles
The common denominator: Eagles fans in profusion
Because the bay area remains a metaphorical melting pot of people who hail from somewhere else
Bucs fans are consistently reminded of how thousands of local citizens refuse to sever their allegiance to the cities that spawned them
It’s why Cheeseheads shoehorn themselves into Raymond James Stadium for Packers games, and why Tampa Bay’s uber-hyped creamsicle game against the Lions in mid-October also featured a sea of silver and blue.
But few do it like Philly, which boasts travelers and transplants in profusion, armed with a national reputation — fair or not — for making obnoxiousness an art form.
Eagles fans cheer during the second half of the regular-season matchup with the Bucs at Raymond James Stadium on Sept. 25. [ JASON BEHNKEN | AP ]“Eagles fans can be morons sometimes, but Philly people are very strong-willed,” said Paul Parone, a Philadelphia native and U.S. Army veteran who founded the Tampadelphia Eagles fan club 30 years ago and has it listed in Florida as a not-for-profit corporation.
“They’re very loyal, they’re very die-hard. If Philly people had been at the Alamo, maybe they wouldn’t have lost that day. Look where the (American) Revolution started; Philly people told England to go pound sand and started the whole wave officially, so we’re not afraid to say it like it is.”

Just seven months after opening to the public
Penicillin has already won its first accolade in the form of the Ketel One Sustainable Bar Award by Asia's 50 Best Bars 2021. The title
which was announced in anticipation of the 50 Best Bars reveal on May 6
is awarded based on an independent audit carried out by Food Made Good Global
50 Best’s sustainability partner of the past eight years
That Penicillin won the award is a well-deserved
given the paucity of wholly sustainable bars in the region currently
The bar comes from pedigree: opened in October 2020
it is the brainchild of Agung Prabowo and Roman Ghale—the co-founders of The Old Man
which won our Best Cocktails award and was placed at #1 on the Asia’s 50 Best Bars list in 2019—alongside their partners
as well as Betty Ng of award-winning architectural design firm
Penicillin champions a closed-loop process of production
wherein ingredients are locally sourced or foraged
spirits are bought in bulk via Ecospirits to reduce packaging
and what is traditionally treated as waste in the drinks-making is reintroduced into the cycle to be reused and upcycled into garnishes or bar food
The bar also strives for regional impact—as part of its 'One Penicillin
the bar plants a native tree in the endangered Kalimantan rainforest area in Borneo

“We are pleased to congratulate Penicillin on winning this year’s Ketel One Sustainable Bar Award," remarks Mark Sansom
"The team thoroughly deserve this recognition for their comprehensive and varied sustainability efforts – from supporting the local economy
instigating Hong Kong’s first closed-loop bar programme and getting involved in reforestation projects via their ‘One Penicillin
it is setting a sustainable example for the world to follow.”
Penicillin joins a roster of past winners that includes Bar Trigona in Kuala Lumpur (2019 and 2020)
we spoke to Prabowo on his reaction to winning the title so soon after their launch
the challenges that the bar industry faces on its road to sustainability
and the work that still has yet to be done in greening the craft of cocktail-making

What does it mean to you to win this award during such a critical juncture in the conversation around climate change and sustainability
We feel extremely happy and honoured to receive this award – Penicillin is still very young and winning this means a lot to us
We see this award as a responsibility to be a pioneer in the industry – to influence other bars to join hands with us to protect our planet
We feel encouraged to be recognised for our efforts
and it makes us want to work even harder to ensure sustainability is at the heart of every aspect of our daily operations
We hope to inspire everyone who visits Penicillin to rethink sustainability
and hopefully encourage them to do their part to save our planet – in any way they can
We want to leave behind a better planet for our kids and for the next generation
And we realise that this can’t go on for much longer—we’ve all done too much damage to our planet and now is the time to change that
The pandemic was a turning point for us—we saw that the skies were so much clearer due to reduced air travel
became cleaner and it really inspired us to do something more to make our planet a better place for all

What are some of the challenges you faced with translating cocktails into a sustainable format
One of the biggest challenges we initially faced was having that awareness and realisation that our old ways of doing things were not sustainable and to make a conscientious effort to cultivate new perspectives
The F&B industry is the third largest contributor of waste in the world—and I remember how in the past we would freely choose any spirit
ingredients from all over the world to concoct our recipes
Sustainability is now at the heart of our daily operations
and we pride ourselves for championing a ‘closed‐loop’ bar programme
which means we not only use local ingredients
but we recycle and upcycle them to work towards minimal waste
we use commonly discarded ingredients like coconut bark
used tea leaves and oxidised wine in our concoctions
we also ensure that previously discarded off-cuts from the food menu can be upcycled to use as garnishes on the cocktail list
which is a key component of our ‘closed-loop’ operation
Penicillin’s sustainable mission flows through not only on the menu but in the design of the bar itself—ceramics are made from 50 percent recycled plaster
while salvaged wood and recycled aluminium have been employed as interior fittings
We’ve also collaborated with local artists for our tableware
we try to source everything we need from Hong Kong
but if there are some spirits that are not available here
we’ll source them from within the region

How have you sustained operations during Covid
we had to be quick to adapt to the changes and be more innovative and flexible
Some of the new things we did include opening for lunch and brunch service
Our kitchen was formerly incepted to offer a unique lab food experience
but we knew we had to adjust accordingly in order to survive
working with Deliveroo to sustain our business
Do you think the bar industry’s mindset towards sustainability has changed because of the pandemic
everyone has generally became more aware about the importance of sustainability and how the effects of global warming is affecting the world
I believe everyone in the industry is aware of how they can make a little change in their day-to-day lifestyle to make this planet a better place
there’s this phrase from Sylvia Earle which really resonates: “Start with 'some' 'one'
No 'one' can do everything but every 'one' can do 'some' thing.”
What are some developments in the world of sustainable drink‐making that you’re excited about
It’s really exciting to see how more bartenders around the world are choosing to use ingredients from a local source
There have also been a lot more sustainable programmes and workshops
as well as training being offered to people in the industry in recent times and it really helps to educate and create more awareness
It is also really heartening to see more new bars championing sustainability practices—I feel that with more people in the industry getting on board the sustainability bandwagon
it will inspire more people to join hands and help make our planet a better place to live in
Prabowo and his team’s achievements will be honoured at the Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2021 online ceremony, which will be held on May 6 (6pm). It will be streamed via The World's 50 Best Bars Facebook page and the 50 Best Bars TV YouTube channel
