Surging Scott ignites offensive charge as Cards sweep opening seriesMarch 30th
ST. LOUIS -- All throughout the offseason, while he was studying video of Hall of Famers Tony Gwynn and Rod Carew and Cardinals great Willie McGee and working on his own plate approach, speedster Victor Scott II used the pain and embarrassment from 2024 to fuel his fire
things would be different when he got his shot to be a full-time starter for the Cardinals
Fresh off a two-hit, two-stolen base day on Saturday, Scott showed off his massive improvements at the plate on Sunday by smashing a three-run home run in the Cardinals' 9-2 defeat of the Twins at stormy Busch Stadium
“A lot of the failures I took to heart, and I had to look at myself internally and say, ‘How can I get better? What are the things I need to work on? And how can I further my game?’” said Scott, who made the Opening Day roster in 2024
Louis and Triple-A Memphis four times because of offensive struggles
“The product [everyone] saw in Spring Training and [everyone] will see during the year is just a different player.”
Three-run homers by Pedro Pagés and Scott and a 409-foot solo shot from Nolan Gorman allowed the Cardinals to remain unbeaten after sweeping the Twins
The Cardinals are 3-0 for just the 17th time in 134 seasons and for the first time since 2006
the Cards swept the Phillies on the road and went on to win the franchise’s 10th of 11 World Series titles
but every at-bat is a damn dogfight,” Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said of a club that scored 19 runs
smashed five homers and cranked out 30 hits in three games
every pitch is important and every inning is a game within a game
We score a couple of runs and the next inning we’re starting from scratch and it’s
‘Let’s get the first guy on!’ It’s contagious.”
added a long home run in the seventh inning and two singles in a three-hit day
Forced to sit the first two days and wait to show off the improvements he made over the offseason while working with new hitting coach and Arizona neighbor Brant Brown
Gorman helped lengthen the lineup with his production on Sunday
“I think since [Lars] Nootbaar’s first hit to open the series [on Thursday]
it was just kind of a snowball effect from there,” said Gorman
who hit 27 and 19 home runs the previous two seasons before finishing 2024 in Triple-A because of his offensive struggles
“Everything has been rolling for these last three games
We’re having a lot of fun after games and before games and we’re keeping it loose

Pagés finished a triple shy of the cycle after racking up a double
home run and single in the game’s first five innings
Scott missed out on a second hit when his 105.2 mph rocket into right field forced Pagés to stop between first and second and he was forced out
Scott showed off his blazing speed by stealing his third base in as many opportunities
Scott was able to find the silver lining in losing out on a hit by saying: “I’ll take a [stolen] bag over a hit.”
the Cardinals responded with eight runs in the second and third innings
who slugged his way onto the Opening Day roster with four Spring Training homers
smashed a 396-foot three-run homer in the second inning
who was often overwhelmed by MLB pitching in 2024
the long homer was another sign of the growth he’s made with his swing
“Those [home runs] are accidents for me because that’s not my job,” said Scott
who is tied for second in MLB in steals after his first weekend of play
Dubbed a “hit collector” by Brown – who he worked with most of the offseason while trying to become more athletic with his stride and his swing – Scott knows it is his job to continue to get on base
run whenever possible and set the table for sluggers Nootbaar
“The overall studying of the game increased my confidence
“It’s just been a lot of studying and time put into that side of the game to help me gain that confidence.”
Conceiving the exhibition pace as a purely interior city, the Pedro Pitarch architectures & urbanisms studio has created for the 44th edition of the contemporary art fair ARCOmadrid
a Circular Synthetic Ecosystem that claims the emancipation of its materials by re-inventing their uses
applications and life cycles through what they call Artificial Ecology
challenges the fair architecture that is conventionally built on obsolete elements
to work explicitly on architectures and processes endemic to the exhibition sphere that create an unexpected multi-scalar place in charge of housing the different objects
users and synthetic natures that make up this edition of ARCO
Presenting the Fair space as a purely interior city, the Pedro Pitarch architectures & urbanisms studio has created for the 44th edition of the contemporary art fair ARCOmadrid
Project description by Pedro Pitarch architectures & urbanisms
The project for the 44th edition of the ARCOmadrid contemporary art fair uses exclusively materials
construction systems and fair ecologies to generate a unique Object-Oriented Urbanism
whose formalization is a Circular Synthetic Ecosystem
Claiming the emancipation of its materials
applications and life cycles through an Artificial Ecology
The urban design of the fair juxtaposes large blocks of galleries with more compact
generating between them a series of multi-scalar spaces
ARCOmadrid presents itself to us in its 44th edition as a true pop-up metropolis
which appears 5 days a year encapsulated in pavilions 7 and 9 of IFEMA to later disappear
integrating itself into a circular fair economy
fair architecture for events builds obsolete ecosystems
architectures and processes are imported from other contexts outside the fair ecosystem
generating high levels of material and energy waste
This project proposes to do the radical opposite: to work explicitly with the construction systems
architectures and economies endemic to the fair sphere to generate an unexpected place
which contains all the genetics of the fair: a fair metropolitanism
Material production has been reduced to a minimum
using unconventional reusable industrialized systems for the construction of architectures
These are complemented with recycled materials that are given a second life within the fair ecosystem on three scales: permanent (within the architecture of IFEMA)
ephemeral (in the architecture of other fairs) and infrastructural (in the logistics processes of the galleries)
Circular Synthetic EcosystemThe Fair is one of the architectural typologies that consumes the most resources and produces the most waste in relation to its short duration
with carbon footprint ratios and kg/day of waste that proportionally exceed those of other more conventional typologies
ARCO 44 continues to develop the concept of Object-Oriented Urbanism that was already tested in the previous edition
presenting a fair that operates as a Circular Synthetic Ecosystem in which stage trusses
cultural programming and works of art simultaneously cohabit an Object-Oriented Urbanism
recycled uncut rigid boards with factory length
OBS fiber panels… These are just some of the elements that shape the proposal
But not functioning as an ex-novo support to be covered
but rather highlighting its construction systems
claiming its emancipation by integrating them into a Circular Synthetic Ecosystem through which dynamics of reuse and recycling are generated in which
Domesticated MetropolisThe spatial design of the fair deliberately renounces the division between urbanism and architecture
producing a multi-scalar organization in which the spaces hybridize domestic and urban scales
This strategy is reinforced by the design of an enormous structure suspended from the trusses of the pavilions
which frames the public programs generating a new ceiling plane
domesticating all the urbanism that is below it
but incorporates the entire lighting infrastructure of the architectural pieces that it frames
Infrastructure that in turn extends throughout the fair
implementing a lighting strategy already developed in past editions
which consists of practically doing away with general lighting and replacing it with stage trusses suspended at a height of 4m
producing a plane of light at a domesticated and user-friendly height
The user experience is intended to be closer to that of a visit to a gallery than to a fair pavilion
the Food Court pays tribute to the theme of this edition through the design of the "Amazonian Table"
whose geometry literally replicates the layout of the Amazon River through a process of geometric standardization of the geographical layout of its meanders
materialized through an object that catalyzes unexpected spatial relationships
The trade fair infrastructure not only offers logistical support
but also gives shape and materiality to the elements of this edition of ARCOmadrid
which is presented to us as an example of Trade Fair Metropolitanism in which the different objects
users and synthetic natures build a complex multi-scalar context

The final Gladiator II trailer has officially arrived in anticipation for the premiere on November 22
Legendary director Ridley Scott leads Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen and Denzel Washington to battle in this continued epic saga of power
intrigue and vengeance set in Ancient Rome
“Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle
Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist
With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake
Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people.”
It's easy to think of the Chilean-born Pascal as a Hollywood fixture
While his face now pervades franchises and epics
one who got his start with dozens of small credits in TV shows that defined eras
like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "The Good Wife," "Homeland," and more
Pascal's breakout famously came with "Game of Thrones." He appeared in the series' fourth season
at the height of Thrones' dominance over television
a pop culture moment that's been impossible to replicate since
While his role was small in the grand scheme of things
As of this writing, Pascal has been honored with some of the industry’s most prestigious recognitions. Last year, he made history as the Latino with the most Emmy nominations in a single year, receiving nods for his work in "The Last of Us" as lead drama actor
"Saturday Night Live" as guest comedy actor
and "Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World" as narrator
His lead drama actor nomination was groundbreaking
marking the first time in over a decade that a Latino was nominated in the category
the last being Jimmy Smits in 1999 for "NYPD Blue"
Pascal also celebrated a career milestone by winning his first Screen Actors Guild Award
As the 49 year old actor accepted the award onstage
sharing that he'd been a SAG member since 1999 and was incredibly honored to be rewarded by his fellow actors
Pascal is starring in "Fantastic Four: First Steps," a film that's expected to launch a new era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe
He's also a key cast member of "Gladiator 2," premiering this Friday
Pascal opened up about his work with Ridley Scott
one of the world's most emblematic directors
and his friendship with the film's star
"Being on the set of a Ridley Scott film is unlike any movie experience I've ever had
And I mean that with complete sincerity"
I've been on the set of 'Game of Thrones,' I've been on the set of 'Star Wars.' Incredibly large productions
And I've not been on anything like 'Gladiator 2' and I'm not likely to be on anything like 'Gladiator 2.' again."
"It's not done anymore," he says of Scott's approach to working
filled with tangible objects and real explosions
Scott's sets are made up of large crews that don't rely on the aid of CGI for stunning sights
many of which abound in "Gladiator 2," a film that takes Roman excess to heart
"Ridley is the kind of director who insists that all the pieces be in place
He has multiple cameras going on at once so that all of the things are there in front of you," explains Pascal
"It is that kind of old school entertainment that does things that can only be done now in cinema"
Pascal also described his admiration for his co-star Mescal
who's leading his first massive production after doing some critically acclaimed independent work
"I knew he would be my friend," he said
"It couldn't have felt more safe and strangely dangerous to have an immediate connection with an actor so that we could beat the shit out of each other as best as possible," he said with a smile
"Audiences can expect to be incredibly entertained by Gladiator 2
"Gladiator 2" is one of the most anticipated sequels ever
stars Russel Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius
a Roman general who is betrayed and sold as a slave
rising through the ranks of the arena in hopes of avenging the murder of his family
The sequel follows the story of Maximus' son, Lucius, played by Mescal
who becomes a gladiator after his home is invaded and he's taken in as a prisoner of war
a character that rapidly becomes Lucius' enemy
While Acacius is in many ways one of the film's antagonists
"One of my favorite things about the character is his context in terms of one of the original beloved characters of the first movie," explains Pascal
He describes Acacius as part of the "connective tissue" of the "Gladiator" universe
Pascal reflected on the similarities between himself and General Marcus Acacius
"The way that I'm similar to my character is that he's very loyal
"The difference being that I would never get into an arena with any actor more than 20 years younger than myself," he said with a smile
Pascal also discussed the preparation he took to be a part of the film
which involved a lot of fight scenes and physical effort
"I prepared for this role by training
he tried to immerse himself in the work of Ridley Scott
something that turned out to be pretty enjoyable
I used it as an excuse to rewatch all of my favorite Ridley Scott movies
And to just let my imagination fill itself with his visual authorship of cinema
And to just kind of unconsciously deliver myself into his vision
and honor the movement of his visuals as best as I could."
I know what instrument I am and make myself the best instrument for him to play." Then
he said "I just think about Ridley making myself a clarinet and Ridley just being like
Pascal attended the London premiere with his sister, Lux Pascal
with both looking stunning in black outfits
Her companionship was unsurprising given how often he speaks of his family
of his positive relationship with his siblings
As to how audiences can prepare for "Gladiator 2," Pascal makes it clear that theatergoers are in for an immersive cinematic experience
"Audiences can expect to be incredibly entertained," said Pascal. "It is a powerful ensemble cast led incredibly by Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington and Ridley Scott."
"Gladiator 2" premieres in theaters this November 22nd in the US

Meanwhile, Mescal opened up about his physical transformation for the film, explaining that he trained to look like a warrior – not a 'sex symbol'.
'I just wanted to be big and strong and look like somebody who can cause a bit of damage when s**t hits the fan,' he said. 'I think also, sometimes, one could, in striving for that perfect look, end up looking more like an underwear model than a warrior.

UTSA's upcoming San Pedro II will follow a design guided by stewardship and sustainability
AUGUST 24, 2023 — The University of Texas System Board of Regents recently approved an update to the funding for the San Pedro II development project, previously approved in November 2022.
The UT System follows a prescribed funding and approval process for major building projects
the San Pedro II project is now able to move from the design development phase to the construction phase
Overland Partners, in collaboration with Gensler
is leading the design vision and development of the project
Teams will now begin preparing the site for construction
with an official groundbreaking scheduled for early 2024.
“I’m immensely grateful for the support of UT System’s Board of Regents and their approval of additional funding to further expand our downtown footprint with San Pedro II
advancing experiential learning opportunities for our students and enhancing the talent pipeline for San Antonio and Texas,” said UTSA President Taylor Eighmy
“UTSA leads the future with our clear focus on immersive
hands-on learning experiences for our students to further drive talent development for our city and region.”
Seamlessly integrated into UTSA’s Downtown Campus expansion, San Pedro II will work in tandem with academic programs and research collaborations in cybersecurity and data science offered by the School of Data Science and National Security Collaboration Center in San Pedro I
which opened in January 2023 and is located across San Pedro Creek
Like San Pedro I, UTSA’s first LEED certified building
San Pedro II will follow a design guided by stewardship and sustainability
the design of both buildings reflects UTSA’s commitment to the design
construction and operation of sustainable environments to create the best learning spaces for students
The two buildings are part of larger placemaking efforts to revitalize this historic area of downtown
San Pedro I and II will connect classrooms and meeting spaces inside with the outdoor venues and public art of the park
“San Pedro II is an important milestone in actualizing UTSA’s downtown vision,” said UTSA Senior Vice President for Business Affairs and Chief Enterprise Development Officer Veronica Salazar
“We are working to create meaningful connections between the university
and cultural destinations that will benefit UTSA students by enhancing experiential learning opportunities.”
The new building is supported by investments of $52,409,972 from State of Texas Tuition Revenue Bond proceeds and $72,000,000 from University of Texas System Permanent University Fund bond proceeds
The BOR approved additional funding in the amount of $6,500,000 from Revenue Financing System Bonds
bringing the project total to $130,909,972
The increase in the total project cost is due to rising construction costs nationally

The trailer for "Gladiator II" debuted online Tuesday, providing fans first glimpse at the highly anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott's Oscar-winning 2000 film
"I remember that day," Lucius says in the trailer
"I never forgot it — that a slave could take revenge against an emperor."
Denzel Washington also stars as Macrinus
who tells Lucius that he will use him as his "instrument." The trailer teases several large-scale battle sequences and bloody fights
