suggests that the Cuban regime increase its control over the Internet
By CiberCuba Editorial Team
recommended that the Cuban regime further strengthen its control over the Internet
who self-defines as a "stoic communist and philosophical rationalist," was interviewed by Canal Caribe on the program Buenos Días
for an informative segment titled "Media War Against Cuba on Social Media."
he indicated that the state's involvement regarding the flow of information on social media should focus on segments susceptible to consuming content that could be potentially harmful to the government
meaning the population that feels discontented
it makes no sense to act directly against the sources of the message
as dismantling one group in Florida would result in another emerging with the same content in Spain or any other region of the world
because there are those who consume that "harmful" information product
Penalva suggested the need to create stricter regulatory frameworks for interaction on social media
Cuba has already made progress with regulations that limit people's freedom of expression
The regime's measures involve imposing fines and prison sentences on citizens for expressing political opinions in the digital realm
Penalva asserted that the world is in a "global context of conflict," where disinformation campaigns aimed at destabilizing countries and economies are becoming increasingly common
His speech aligns with that of the Cuban regime
He insisted that the alleged misinformation campaigns against Cuba are part of an unconventional media war
which can create gray areas in communication and lead from peace to an escalation of tensions and immediate armed conflicts
but about warfare and a profound strategy that seeks to alter
through the revolution of communication technologies
the perception of political and social reality and to manipulate emotions with the aim of subverting the institutions and society of Cuba," said the communist communicator on his profile on X
Penalva did not address the crisis of the media in Cuba during his speech
nor the repression faced by citizens on the island who hold political views contrary to the regime
nor the lack of press and expression freedom that has persisted in the country for more than six decades
In 2021, following the massive protests of July 11th, the Cuban government published in the Official Gazette of the Republic the Decree Law 35
which imposed severe restrictions on freedom of expression online
actions such as the dissemination of "fake news," offensive messages
or any content that affects the country's reputation
It also began to regard the publication of all types of data that
and economic principles of the State as "harmful dissemination." Additionally
it criminalized calls for peaceful demonstrations and protests
along with other complementary resolutions
establishes that the Cuban state is the owner of public telecommunications services and has the authority to regulate
and oversee all services and networks in the country
In 2023, the Cuban Parliament unanimously approved the controversial Social Communication Law which further restricts press freedom in Cuba
The regulation controls the content of the media and has been heavily criticized by non-governmental organizations and independent press
Miguel Díaz-Canel characterized the law as a "first step" toward controlling the communication system in Cuba and prohibits
the dissemination of information that could "destabilize the socialist State."
This law only permits the existence of media linked to the State or the Communist Party
It does not guarantee freedom of the press nor does it allow the dissemination of independent content outside the official narrative
Carlos Penalva recommends that the Cuban regime further strengthen its control over the Internet
This includes establishing stricter regulatory frameworks for social media interaction
aimed at limiting the spread of content deemed harmful to the Cuban government
Decree Law 35 in Cuba imposes severe restrictions on freedom of expression on the internet
It classifies the dissemination of "false news" and offensive messages as crimes
even criminalizing calls for peaceful protests
which significantly limits citizens' ability to express themselves freely on digital platforms
The Social Communication Law in Cuba severely restricts press freedom
This law controls the content of the media
allowing only the existence of state or Communist Party-affiliated outlets
and prohibits the dissemination of information that could "destabilize the socialist state."
The Cuban regime justifies the control of information on the Internet as a defense against misinformation campaigns
these campaigns are part of a "media war" against Cuba
aimed at destabilizing the country and its economic system
thereby justifying the restrictions imposed on freedom of expression

Joao Penalva’s Pavement Photographs On Display At Simon Lee Gallery
Simon Lee Gallery presents a solo exhibition of new work by the London–based Portuguese artist
photography is central to Penalva’s practice
At the core of his use of the medium is the ambiguity of its relationship to fact and fiction
slide and film installations suggest themselves as documentary
but jarring notes or a fictional tone offer other potential readings
This uncertainty seems to question the very possibility of the photograph to act as an independent or impartial document
One major new series of works in the exhibition consists of large scale photographs of London pavements taken at points along the artist’s daily routes between home and studio
printed onto linen and mounted on aluminium
No less formal compositions for being ready-made
like all of Penalva’s photographs these works are historical documents
Records of surfaces laid down over time by the addition or replacement of material and texture
they stand as transcripts of the labour that makes them and of the passage of man and machine across their surface
they call to mind Freud’s analogy of the aggregation of psychological experience with the architecture of the Eternal City
Beneath the soil of the contemporary city can be found the memory-traces of its past
but that history is also preserved on the surface of the city’s streets
In their transposition of horizontal to vertical
in their insistence on base materiality and in their entropic collapse of figure / ground distinction
these photographs recall as well Rosalind Kraus and Yve-Alain Bois’ reading of Bataille’s concept of l’informe
complete with its associations of modernist and anti-modernist artists
from the Sacchi of Alberto Burri to Andy Warhol’s oxidation paintings
small format silver gelatine prints are also titled after the places the photographs were taken
Their title includes as well the name Michio Harada
A book accompanying the exhibition reproduces these and other works by the Japanese photographer
This is an exhibition within an exhibition
but the precise status of these works – their authorship
This ambiguity casts doubt in turn on the status of the street pavement photographs
and continues in the exhibition’s final element
a slide installation entitled Monument shown in the lower gallery
An image of a photographic enlarger is projected alongside a text describing three members of a single family from Northern Ireland
one of whom is supposed to be the photographer
The work suggests an exercise in genealogical reminiscence
but also the weaving of a complex and whimsical story
João Penalva was born in Lisbon in 1949 and has lived and worked in London since 1976
He represented Portugal in the XXIII Bienal Internacional de São Paulo in 1996 and in the XLIX Biennale di Venezia in 2001
and was awarded the DAAD Berlin Artist’s Residency in 2003-2004
He exhibited in the Berlin Biennale 2 (2001) and the Biennale of Sydney (2002)
His work has been shown extensively in museums and public institutions
Major solo exhibitions include: Trondheim Kunstmuseum
Odense (2012); CAM – Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian
Lund (2010); Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art
Oporto (2005); Ludwig Museum — Museum of Contemporary Art

João Penalva's studio is in one of the few remaining large group studios in south London not yet transformed into expensive lofts. He tells me sadly that the building is under threat as it has been recently sold.
We ascend in a slow goods-lift to his bright, largely empty space on the top floor. He has only been here a year, explaining its neatness. The windows have thick curtains which he draws to get the studio dark enough to work on his photographs, projections and slide works; they also help to keep the space warm in winter.
He likes very much being a tourist in Japan: "I am very much a foreigner – I love being a foreigner. It is such an advantage. You never take anything for granted." His practice turned increasingly to photography, film and slide works.
He now brings back material from his visits to Japan. When he's there, he confesses, "I am thinking this is something that will be transformed." In the studio, pieces of cloth hang on the wall, their difference from European textiles apparent.
Before I leave he calls me over to the window. "The most important thing in this studio is not the studio itself but the car park." He points at the view. "It changes every day with the weather; it changes as there are shadows, and when it rains and when people park cars; so I started photographing it".
João Penalva is at Simon Lee Gallery, London W1 (020-7491 0100) from 27 March to 25 April

you’re probably tasked with one of the most important decisions in the last decade: how to implement AI in your business
What are the biggest challenges that AI can solve
How do you choose strategic partners or vendors when everything changes so fast
I'm the CEO of Lang.ai and in partnership with GTM Fund
we've built the first framework to implement AI for GTM teams
Lang.ai is an AI Platform for Customer Experience
GTM Fund and their community is made up of over 300 C-suite and VP-level GTM operators
The number one thing on just about everyone's mind right now is how can I implement AI to grow more efficiently
When Max Altschuler, GP at GTM Fund
You’ll likely just go faster in the wrong direction
It happens with any new major breakthrough in technology like mobile
People have a tendency to get distracted by the technology itself and lose track of the underlying problems that they’re really trying to fix
each of your teams would have run out to buy the latest AI point solution because of FOMO
I would urge teams to go back to the basics. Get your leadership team together
re-evaluate each juncture in your GTM process from customer discovery to upsell
and re-imagine a better way to engage your customers using these new advancements in AI.
use a framework like the one below to evaluate which AI option is right for your organization
and then roll it out across a single business unit
I actually think that AI has the ability to do more harm to your business than good
There’s no doubt in my mind that AI will help us rewrite the current GTM playbook
This is one of those situations where companies need to slow down in order to speed up."
Matthew Miller, principal analyst at G2 focused on AI, agrees. His research of almost 200 categories with generative AI features bares this out
Despite the bells and whistles of newfangled technology
the needle has hardly moved when it comes to how well the software fulfills the requirements of software users
and only then should you try to figure out how to use the best software to achieve the best results
If you’re in GTM teams, such as sales, marketing, product, customer experience
you can benefit from this framework to make the right decisions when it comes to establishing AI
three primary options to implement AI in a company are available
You will be able to run your model of choice as you host it based on if it’s open source or it’s hosted by the provider
Differentiator of cloud/LLM providers: Engineers can make tweaks and have varying degrees of control over the underlying models being used
Vertical leaders are software platforms that have grown in a certain vertical
They typically specialize in a specific business function or area
they have the most comprehensive dataset with regard to that function
Some of them have already launched AI models trained on all the historical data from their customers.
Some examples of vertical leaders with new AI tools:
have become vertical leaders with a new product in the market because they were able to nail the timing in the new AI wave
Copy.ai have access to the largest datasets in a specific vertical or business function and can fine-tune the best model without the need for engineers
Enterprise AI startups are companies focused on safely implementing AI for enterprise-specific use cases
Enterprises want to know that their data isn't being used to train models; these startups cater to that need
Some examples of Enterprise AI startups include:
Differentiator: Quick delivery of bespoke models tailored to the customers’ data
preventing customer data from use as training models
All without the need for engineering resources on the customer side
you can see that setting up AI is a difficult decision for GTM teams
We’ve created this framework to make it easier to choose which type of vendor works for your company and your specific AI use case
Below we’ll cover how to use this framework
it’s important to understand what the different axes mean
Engineer constraints: The constraints that exist in your organization in terms of the engineers that work on this issue
High constraints mean you can’t dedicate engineers to this problem.Customer-specific AI: The need to customize the AI to your own data and the use case you’re trying to solve
High customer-specific AI means you need a high level of customization
The engineering zone is best for problems that are a core operation for the company. Companies are normally willing to dedicate internal engineering resources. They will have a need for customization and privacy, as it’s how they differentiate from their competitors. In this case, you use LLMs to build your own AI models
You ensure zero data-privacy risk by hosting it and fast maintenance by dedicating an engineering team to the model
Examples of uses for the engineering zone:
The SaaS zone is best for problems that aren’t part of the core operation of the company and for which you can’t invest engineering resources
the data that’s part of these problems isn’t critical or high-risk
you can work with a SaaS provider that has a “megamodel” trained by all customer data
The benefit here is that the provider has data about other companies
and you don’t have to invest engineering resources – you just contract the software with the AI features monthly or yearly
Examples of use cases for the SaaS zone:
The partnership zone is the best for processes that may not be the main focus of the company
so you don’t have engineering availability
These procedures may have specific company needs (because of privacy
or complexities) that require customization and not just generic models
By partnering with an enterprise-ready startup
you get the power of fast execution while keeping data private and saving resources
Examples of use cases for the partnership zone:
they can’t dedicate engineers to their brand or marketing teams
customer-specific startup with AI for marketing would be the best move for these brands
The danger zone is where companies can find themselves if they don’t adapt to the exponential change of AI that’s happened in the past year
Being in the danger zone means you’re investing time and money in engineers to create a model that you don’t own
so your data may be used across multiple clients.
This used to be common as machine learning (ML) models required a lot of training and fine-tuning to solve a problem
and providers needed huge amounts of data to be successful
it was common to pay for AI providers that had an in-house team of ML engineers training the algorithms
but the data and the model belonged to the service-provider
not to the company that was buying the AI software
it doesn’t make sense to be in the danger zone from an AI strategy perspective
change providers or push them to deliver AI models in a way that doesn’t require you to pay for engineering resources
You should be out of this zone for any AI process in your company
AI and the ecosystem of problems and companies surrounding it are evolving exponentially
so while we tried to summarize everything in a simple framework
there are other variables that are also relevant in order to make decisions
Even though generative AI commoditizes a lot of aspects of AI
building a solution is different than implementing a technology
We’ve seen a common question being asked to AI providers these days: “Why is this different from what I can do with ChatGPT/ Open AI?”
We wanted to point out that the difference doesn’t necessarily come from a technology perspective
What’s a true advantage is if your AI vendor is thinking about the problem you’re trying to solve 24/7 and therefore has the best solution or product.
A lot of times customers are pushing to implement AI
but it’s good to take a step back and understand what the problem you’re trying to solve is and what’s the best approach before investing thousands or millions of dollars

Galeria Filomena Soares is pleased to present the latest solo exhibition by the artist João Penalva (Lisbon, 1949). The exhibition opens with a private view on Thursday 22 May at 9.30pm and continues until 13 September 2014.
This exhibition presents photographic works from 2014 and a video work from 2007 which has never been shown in Portugal. Pavel Rodriguez", who recently interviewed the artist about this exhibition, states that ‘these works demonstrate that, for João Penalva, there is nothing in the world that cannot become material for work, just as, for John Cage, there was no sound on earth that couldn't become an idea for a composition.'
‘All these works are scrupulously real in scale, as if there were a forensic intention in depicting situations so ordinary that they are normally invisible to all who now recognise them. Is this the task of the artist: to shake us out of our distraction, enabling us to discover that life is more interesting than we thought?'
‘There are also images of decrepit cactuses in Lisbon, with names carved into them. The fact that someone has inscribed names and initials on such a fragile support is a moving manifestation of the ephemerality of a moment compared with its remembrance. They are nostalgic images - small-format black and white photographs, from which all trace of contemporaneity has been removed.'
‘Similarly, watching the simple filmed image of a ray of light, which becomes confused with the beam from the projector that makes the image visible, we lose ourselves in enjoyment of a dance of specks of dust which, as a result of a decisive authorial gesture by the artist, lasts for exactly four minutes.'
Pavel Rodriguez also states that ‘the photographic act, in Penalva's work, always anticipates a fictionalisation of the image'. In response, Penalva says ‘these images are images of the original image. It is the printing method that redefines them as images which have forgotten their strictly documentary origin. That is the fiction.'
Pavel Rodriguez is a writer and art critic. He lives in Mexico City.

Olivia Penalva is a talented 14-year-old singer-songwriter from Vernon
She began singing at age 11 with local music teacher and vocal coach Betty Ann Northup and made it to the top 12 in the Our Kids have Talent competition in both 2012 and 2013
Penalva held a sold-out CD release concert at the Powerhouse Theatre in November for her debut album titled Rainfall
She has also been working with local talent Andrew Allen in Los Angeles
and together they have collaborated on several songs including her top 30 Canadian radio chart topper Christmas For Two
Q: When did you become interested in music
A: “I have always been interested in music
but when I was about 11 and started vocal lessons that’s when I really started to appreciate it
Q: What is the songwriting process like for you
A: “Initially it was a challenge to put lyrics and melodies together to create one song
But I really enjoy the process and every time I sit down to write
it gets easier and easier to create something that I like and that feels like me
I especially enjoy collaborating on a song because everyone’s input just helps the song be better
Q: How is the experience of travelling to Los Angeles to meet with Andrew (Allen) and Robin Ghosh and other musicians and songwriters
and I love having the opportunity to work with such talented musicians
Andrew and Robin are amazing songwriters and I have definitely learned a lot working with them
As a team we connect well and have come up with some amazing new songs for my EP album
Our Kids Have Talent got me up on stage and it has been a love affair ever since
Having my CD release concert at the Powerhouse Theatre last fall sure helped me to get over most of my stage fright
It was amazing to be on stage with a full band and packed theatre
I have many opportunities to perform with so many talented musicians and it helps that I have been well received by my audiences
I especially enjoy my monthly acoustic gigs at Intermezzo Restaurant with my favourite drummer
I am also thankful to have the opportunity to work
He is so talented and so inspiring and he has really helped me to move forwards as a performer.”
Q: I hear a lot of buzz lately about your song Fight For You
I shot the video for it last fall with a great team from Eleven 050 and some fantastic musician/actors
It is a project close to my heart as the proceeds of every purchase on ITunes goes to the Salvation Army to help the homeless
It was also picked as one of 306 finalists from over 18,500 applicants in the International Song Writing competition and one of 15 in the teen category; the top three in each category to be announced the end of April
This is also the song entered into the CBC Searchlight Competition and was picked by Toronto-based journalist Chris Dart as one of 112 songs on his Mega Playlist of Amazing Discoveries
I ended up making it as far as the regional semi-finals and am so thankful for all my fans who voted for me
Q: Do you have any other hobbies aside from singing
A: “I don’t have many other hobbies as I spend a lot of my time singing
But I do love collecting things and somehow I manage to collect the strangest things
I will make sure I get one in every colour or flavour
Q: Does anyone else in your family sing or just you
although my brother and sister are both pretty good at it
but not in public because they are both too shy
My mom and dad are certain that my talent does not come from them
Q: What can we expect from you with your music this year
A: “This year is going to be a great but busy year
I’ve been writing a ton of music which I love and I am super excited about my new songs and the eventual release of my EP album
I have also been posting some cool covers on my Music Mondays YouTube page
and I have got some fun shows coming up throughout B.C
so be sure to check my website for those details
I can’t wait for you guys to see what comes next.”
