one can see how Pentecost dramatically impacted the early church
many Christians regard Pentecost as the birthdate of the Christian church. Pentecost marks the fulfillment of Jesus Christ's promise to send the Holy Spirit to empower and guide His disciples
the disciples were gathered in Jerusalem when suddenly a sound like a rushing wind filled the place
and tongues of fire appeared over each of them
They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages
a manifestation of the Spirit's empowering presence. “Look
And how is it that we hear each in our own language in which we were born
we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God” (Acts 2:7
the church multiplied in number from 120 to 3,000 believers
The Pentecost serves as a reminder of the call to engage in mission and evangelism. At the time of Pentecost
spoke in languages understood by a diverse assembly of people from various nations
This is not merely a historical event but a clarion call for us
to prayerfully carry the everlasting gospel to every corner of the earth
the Spirit of God will again be manifested in a similar way
The time is now — emboldened to share the good news
we are commissioned to be ambassadors of hope
This is not a time for complacency but a divine summons to actively participate in God's redemptive plan for humanity. Let us
proclaim the distinctive truths entrusted to us
and embody the love of Christ in a world hungering for hope and wholeness.
All of us church leaders and members, play a pivotal role in mobilizing for evangelism. With Pentecost 2025
our goal in North America is to hold at least 3,000 proclamation initiatives in 2025
with 2024 a year of "Preparing for Pentecost." We are in this together
and embody the love of Christ in a world hungering for hope and wholeness
Let's take the words of Matthew 24:14 to heart: "And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations
To facilitate Pentecost 2025, not only will the NAD leadership lead by example through prayer and proclamation events, resources and training will be made available through the North American Division Pentecost 2025 website
We are committed to equipping our members with the tools and knowledge necessary for effective evangelism
Whether it's through innovative outreach strategies
we must adapt to reach hearts longing for the hope and wholeness found in Jesus

Pentecost marks the fulfillment of Jesus Christ's promise to send the Holy Spirit to empower and guide His disciples
the North American Division Executive Committee has voted to approve Pentecost 2025
an initiative to be launched for church leaders and members alike to seek the Holy Spirit’s power and mobilize for evangelism with the goal of holding at least 3,000 proclamation initiatives division wide in 2025
Adventists with approval from their church board can sign up to be part of Pentecost 2025
with the option to apply for startup funds.*
“All of us can play a pivotal role in sharing the love of Jesus and the distinctive truths entrusted to us,” said G
“Moving forward with Pentecost 2025 helps us all embrace the mission and proclaim the gospel
This is an opportunity for each member to take the words of Matthew 24:14 to heart.”
The plan is straightforward. Using the rest of 2024 as planning and preparation time, a pastor or lay person is encouraged to take their proposal for a proclamation initiative (i.e. evangelistic meetings) to their local church board [or school board] for an action of support. Upon voted church/school board approval, the person registers for Pentecost 2025 by filling out the NAD form at https://www.nadadventist.org/pentecost2025
up to $3,000 in financial assistance for their local event
Once the local conference designee provides approval the application goes to the union and then the NAD; and a resource welcome kit is sent to the church/school
Upon completion of the event a report will be submitted to the division
“Pentecost 2025 is for all Seventh-day Adventist churches across the North American Division
We are urging total member involvement,” said Calvin Watkins
“And we recognize that the majority of our churches are small and may need ‘seed money’ and resources that can help them chart the way forward
We hope to provide both to as many as possible
To facilitate Pentecost 2025, not only will the NAD leadership lead by example through proclamation events and dedicated prayer time, resources and training will be made available through the North American Division website
Resources will be available in Spanish and French

In addition to the Pentecost 2025 application
there will be a comprehensive list of resources
Below is a small selection highlighting the answers to the most-asked questions the division has already received
Pentecost 2025 is meant to encourage proclamation events that teach the Christ-centered
biblical teachings of the Seventh-day Adventist Church
Appeals to accept Jesus as Savior and to join the Adventist Church through baptism or profession of faith need to be included
There should be at least 15 sessions (the first 10 could be done in a small group Bible study format) with five public preaching proclamation and appeals taking place
Proclamation events are strategically designed activities focused on communicating the message of the Christian gospel and the distinctive beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist faith to diverse audiences
These events adapt various engaging formats for maximum impact:
The purpose of these events is to manifest and share the hope and love found in Jesus Christ
we follow the biblical example set forth at Pentecost
empowering individuals to discover and grow in their spiritual journey under the guidance of the Holy Spirit
Ministering to the needs of people and developing relationships is critical if we are going to follow Jesus’ model for soul-winning
On an individual level we can do this by sincerely reaching out to neighbors
A church/school group might also use felt-needs seminars

May 20th will mark Pentecost Monday (or Lunedì di Pentecoste in Italian) – an important observance in the Christian calendar which commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Jesus’s disciples
Pentecost Monday is a movable feast (or festa mobile) in the Christian liturgical calendar
meaning that its date changes each year depending on when Easter is celebrated: Pentecost – which marks the exact day the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples – falls on the seventh Sunday after Easter
with Pentecost Monday following right after
But while Pentecost Monday (also known as Whit Monday elsewhere) is a public holiday and therefore a non-working day in a number of European countries
Italy – a country known for being overwhelmingly Catholic – doesn’t consider the date a festa nazionale
Pentecost Monday was long a public holiday in Italy
the Tuesday following Pentecost Sunday was also a national holiday up until the late 18th century
But in 1977 the Italian government then led by Giulio Andreotti removed Pentecost Monday along with four other Catholic-related feasts (these included St Joseph’s Day on March 19th and the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29th) from its list of public holidays
The official reason behind the change was to speed up public administration work and increase businesses’ productivity as the Italian calendar had featured nearly 20 different national holidays up to that point
It could be argued however that a nationwide shift towards secularism in the second half of the 20th century also played a non-negligible role in the change
That said, a number of political parties and Catholic associations have asked for the holiday to be restored over the years, with a proposal backed by the League party and centre-left Democrazia Solidale making it all the way to parliament in 2016 but being ultimately scrapped
Pentecost Monday isn't the only important date on the Christian calendar not marked with a public holiday in Italy
READ ALSO: How to make the most of Italy's public holidays in 2024
Curiously, while Pentecost Monday is not a public holiday on the Italian calendar, there is one area of the country where the observance does grant residents a day off: South Tyrol (or Alto Adige)
meaning that local authorities have the freedom to decide on a number of economic
If you’re one of South Tyrol’s 530,000 residents
you will enjoy a three-day weekend this week

the Elmhurst Art Museum unveiled the “Sustenance & Land: Five Artists Consider Our Relationship With The Earth” installation
which is open to the public until April 27th
The installation contains art by Chunbo Zhang
The Installation was curated by Liz Chilsen
who shed light on the intricacies of the installation when interviewed
Liz Chilsen has an extensive history in curation
from photography curation in galleries for Columbia College Chicago to her current work curating exhibits at the Elmhurst Art Museum
she had been familiar with the museum for years before her employment there
ensuring her curations were suited to the interests of both the museum and the demographics it attracts
she clarified that she “had not worked with these artists before
but knew of their work and topics of focus” and knew they would be the right choices once she had settled on the theme of the installation
The Exhibit begins with an interactive art piece from Claire Pentecoste containing multiple trays of soil that guests are invited to smell
The piece aims to connect the viewers with the ideas of the earth and our interconnectedness
so that they are more prepared for the diverse artworks composing the installation
Though the initial art piece invites the guests to utilize their senses
the central piece of her section is less interactive
It is composed of a series of podiums displaying various jars
and tins containing earthly elements such as soil
The section on Chunbo Zhang features art pieces centered on food and the earth
and offers a more comedic take on the themes of the installation
This section is centered around wall-mounted art pieces
and guests are invited to view paintings such as a donut composed of fine china
while considering the deeper messages of the work
Though the absurdist qualities of the artwork may portray the art as comedic
it reveals much about consumerism and conservation in America through Zhang’s connections between processed foods and Chinese motifs
The artists Barbara Ciurej + Lindsay Lochman prefer to be labeled as a singular artist
as they have worked together for decades and have a collaborative display in this installation
Their art pairs well with the work of Chunbo Zhang
a fact that Liz Chilsen emphasized during her interview
especially since they draw on the comedic side of things,” expressed Chilsen
Though the artists have created art centered around humanity’s relationship with food previously
the artwork for this installation was unlike anything seen before
especially the piece with different candies displayed as geological specimens
The section containing the art of Lydia Cheshewalla is composed of an immersive art piece projected onto the walls of the gallery
The images display scenes of collaboration between the natural and man-made world
with brutalist architecture against the leafy green backdrop of a forest
Along with this are mosaic-style pieces on the walls
and other forms of vegetation native to the area
This section blends the experience of the senses
The images of the man-made world invading the natural world
with the sounds of wildlife against city noise
emphasize the shift in humanity’s relationship with the earth
The art from Tomiko Jones has a much more centralized theme
and though it does contain art of many mediums
the usage of the color blue throughout unifies the art
This section of the installation focused more on the usage of ink and the silhouettes of wildlife
but other aspects of the natural world were incorporated as well
through the shells and landscape shots displayed
The inclusion of Jones’s art provided a different perspective into the interpretation of sustenance
Though the art in this section is wall-mounted
as well as a three-dimensional piece composed of shelves displaying various natural elements
For those looking to immerse themselves in art addressing our dependence on the earth and how we seek to sustain ourselves from it
this installation from the Elmhurst Art Museum is an invaluable experience

The ecumenical council was among the most significant events of the 20th century
To call it simply “Vatican II” is not sufficient
The complex purpose was to celebrate a true ecumenical council
Thus we are referring not only to a Catholic event
but also to one with great ecumenical and worldwide repercussions
Its significance extended well beyond the Christian churches to reach
We must contemplate with admiration Pope John in the Basilica of St
There in 1959 the now “blessed” pope convened the Roman Synod and convoked the ecumenical council
His choice of this feast to convene a council revealed his hope of opening a path leading to conversion for the church
Blessed John XXIII’s hope for a council was a real inspiration of the Holy Spirit
That inspiration brought hope to the church and to the whole world
Today we can sincerely affirm that the assimilation of his message is not yet complete
Fifty years after the opening of the council
many who know about it have not yet implemented it or read its documents or understood it
It is also true that many have sought to erase its memory because the challenges the council set before us
are rather uncomfortable for some structures and persons
“The new Pentecost” convened by Blessed John XXIII opened
the doors and windows of a church in which more than a few pastors and laypeople suffer the temptation to close themselves off in a cell that is secure or full of prestige and comfort
little disposed to listen to the anguish and hopes of this world
Upon becoming the pilot of Peter’s barque as its “pastor and guide
navigator and admiral,” John XXIII found the church walled up in a holy city with a very European mentality and too centered in Rome
He was “provoked” by the Spirit of God and by internal and external ferments that caused some discomfort
the comments of the bishops about the new council
revealed that the ecclesiastical hierarchy had not yet taken the pulse of their world
They considered many of the subjects “foreign” to the mission of the church
He was ready to listen to the voice of renewal and dialogue so that the church might become an apostolic
The surprise of the entire world was enormous as he announced that it was necessary to open the doors and windows of the church and to renew the missionary commitment of the baptized
No less a surprise was the affirmation of the universal call to holiness for everyone
the pope spoke clearly of “a new Pentecost.” It was to be an ecumenical council marked by dialogue
In Saint Peter’s Square on the morning of Oct
in procession and singing the Litany of the Saints
They were accompanied by the ringing of bells in all the churches of urban Rome
A new church appeared in the old and majestic Basilica of Saint Peter
though the indifference of some was not absent
“Mother Church is happy and exults with joy.” He had begun to dispel fears and reservations and to allow all to be filled with the joy of the Spirit
Then the pope responded directly to critics of the council
“We have a completely different opinion,” he said
through which humanity seems to be entering into a new order
we should recognize instead a hidden plan of divine providence.”
Defining the task of the council and the mission of the church
Pope John affirmed that it was necessary to consider the legacy of 20 centuries of Christianity as something that
had become the common patrimony of humanity
we are not talking about continuing to be trapped by the old
move forward with the work required by our time and our Lord Jesus Christ
Already in the bull that convened the council and later in the encyclical “Pacem in Terris,” the pope referred to the signs of the times and to the duty to interpret them with discernment
In this way John XXIII re-established the prophetic task of the church in the heart of history
That day concluded with the pope’s famous improvised discourse before 100,000 people gathered with torches in Saint Peter’s Square
This spontaneous celebration called to memory the popular acclamation at the Council of Ephesus
where the bishops’ definition of Mary as Mother of God was received with acclamation by the people. It was also a clear image of the church as the people of God
were present for all to see on the first day of the council
The pope’s simple and fatherly words revealed that he was not vindicating primates
not even before his brother bishops meeting in council
Rather he was inviting all to be happy and hopeful because God the Father has looked upon us; we have been anointed by God the Holy Spirit and sent forth by God the Son

The spectacular tradition of rose petals fluttering down through the oculus of the Pantheon is held each year on the feast of Pentecost
The unique ceremony occurs at around midday when fire-fighters drop tens of thousands of rose petals 43 metres into the interior of the Pantheon, symbolising the Holy Spirit’s descent to Earth.
This year is the first time that the Pentecost event takes place under the Pantheon's new ticketed entry system.
The Pantheon made international headlines last summer after Italy's culture ministry introduced a €5 entry fee, following an agreement with church authorities.
Access to the landmark remains free to Rome residents, people attending religious services and the under-18s, while visitors under 25 pay an entry fee of €3.

Bishops' Conference of England and Wales
prepared by the Bishops of England and Wales
The Solemnity of Pentecost reminds us that everything which exists
Creator of heaven and earth.” God our loving Father creates and continues to give life to the world through His Word
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Church
God’s revelation of himself in Creation is inseparable from the revelation of his love for us in Christ and in his desire to live in us through his Holy Spirit
‘God’s Spirit is always and everywhere “the Lord
and the voice of Pentecost is echoed in the voice of creation being transformed into the glorious liberty of God’s children.’ In this liberty
we call on the Spirit to ‘renew the face of the Earth’
to use this liberty for the good of creation and for the good of all that brings life
It is our common home entrusted to each generation
But how have we used that glorious liberty
we are acutely aware of the damage that continues to be inflicted on the Earth
and the repercussions for the well-being of our brothers and sisters
Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis have both taught us that everything is interconnected and interdependent
The way we live our everyday lives has an impact on everyone and on the earth
and the enormity of the challenges we face
have spurred us to speak out together this Pentecost Sunday
about the role that the Catholic Church and our faith must play in our shared care for God’s gift to us
For all too long we have either been ignorant of
the systematic exploitation of our planet and the unsustainable consumption of its resources
While accepting the crucial need and demand for energy for the benefit of the poorest of our brothers and sisters
be by means which radically reduce the use of carbon-based fuels
there must be a new global understanding of our world
where nations recognise our common responsibility for the dignity of all people and their rights to sustainable livelihoods
Pope Francis speaks of a global politics that looks beyond our own needs to the needs of all
most especially the poor and the marginalised
But we cannot leave the healing of our common home and the wellbeing and care of our brothers and sisters merely to a response from industry and governments
Our own local concern and action is necessary and has far-reaching consequences
choices and decisions of our everyday lives and our aspirations for the future
and individuals will have a significant impact on our efforts to restore our common home
These are measures that everyone can employ
They are effective ways in which we can each reaffirm our personal vocation to be stewards of creation
This Pentecost comes at a time of remarkable challenge and opportunity
We are gradually emerging from the tragedies and restrictions of the pandemic
Our countries are also hosting two most important meetings this year
These meetings will gather together men and women who have the power to make defining choices and policies which will help us build back better
whose gift to the Church and the world we celebrate again at Pentecost
Let us keep this Feast with that enduring hope that we can begin to repair the damage we have done and provide a healthy home for future generations
Our hope will be strengthened by our prayer
May our constant request be that the Holy Spirit guide us
strengthen our resolve and ‘renew the face of the earth’

“We wanted to build a case study based on real-world experience for a lecture
to teach students how to predict demand,” Cohen explained
the case study was going very well and was 60
Cohen as research assistants when the project began
Pentecoste and Gras were able to work closely with the professor till to the end
even once they had graduated and left their roles as research assistants
“The way it would work typically is we would collaborate with [Prof
Cohen] on how we were going to approach a problem
and we would just receive guidance and help troubleshoot,” said Pentecoste
there would be some heads down work on our end where we were just implementing several algorithms and working on the pure coding.”
While there was one target for the teaching case study that was originally planned, the new book format meant that the target audience could be expanded upon. Cohen explained that the book is not only aimed at students in programs like McGill’s MMA, but also at data scientists and retailers who might hire scientists to implement the tools and processes outlined in the book.
The goal of the book is ultimately to demystify how predictive analytics can be used in a retail context and how retailers can monetize historical data, to do better in the future.
“The book includes detailed implementations, along with comprehensive Jupyter notebooks. [There is also] a data set available for download with the book. In fact, the book is accompanied by the website DemandPredictionBook.com” Cohen said.
What was perhaps most helpful for Cohen was the fact that Pentecoste and Gras fell right into that target demographic, allowing them to provide valuable insight on the digestibility of the methods outlined in the book.
“[We were able to] explain some algorithms with words that were simple and more accessible,” Gras said. “I mean, we both have engineering and math backgrounds in our undergrad, but most of the models covered in the book, two years ago, we did not know. It was [fresh] in our heads, what would have helped us better understand all the topics.”
Both former students appreciated the opportunity to work with Cohen and their other co-author on this project, citing it as a very important source of hands-on experience headed into the workforce.
“I think the fact that it's a professor that has done a good amount of publishing papers and that has been recognized, he has credibility, it helped with my resume and with screening processes,” said Pentecoste. “As a research assistant, because we’ve done some consulting with some companies, we’ve done some research, it was a way to show proficiency in analytics and using those tools.”
It seems the feeling was mutual, as Cohen expressed how much he enjoyed working with Pentecoste and Gras.
My experience working with Arthur and Paul-Emile was great. I’m very happy with my collaboration with them,” Cohen said. “They were very responsible and eager to contribute to the book. They were the right judges to confirm the best way to tailor the content of the book for the target audience. They also had quite a big role in terms of making the code top notch. They took a lot of time to make sure that all the codes and notebooks are well written and easy to follow.”
With the publishing of this new book and his recent nomination as the Scale AI Research Chair in Data Science for Retail, it’s been an exciting time for Cohen, who plans to continue his work on demand prediction and retail analytics, while examining the challenges presented by COVID-19.
“I'm also hoping to branch out and work on several other topics,” Cohen explained. “The Chair will allow me to work on developing data science techniques for retail applications. We also want to make sure that all the methods have social impact—sustainability considerations will be at the core of the Chair. Another focus would be potentially emerging markets [and the] circular economy.”
It remains a mystery which TV program made him hit the “off” button once and for all
But here’s a look at some of the top stories of the day
which he might have seen before putting down the remote:
A hit from Hammer: Music-news watchers were keeping an eye on M.C
Hammer’s album Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em
which looked like it was about to become the best-selling rap album in the genre’s history
A shortage of priests: A recent study of U.S
Catholics had shown a severe shortage of priests
the nation would only have one priest for every 2,200 Catholics
A hit in theaters. The movie Ghost had been released that weekend (July 15 was a Sunday) but would not be released in Argentina until the fall
the future Pope would not have been able to watch that weekend’s top U.S
which didn’t make it to his region until August

The word has its roots in the Greek word ‘pentecoste,’ which means ‘50th day.’ Pentecost is a major festival in the Christian church and is celebrated by believers on the Sunday that falls on the 50th day of Easter
This day is marked by Catholic priests dressing up in red robes and draping the altar of the church in red cloth
Believers would often choose to get baptized on Pentecost
and today it has become the most common day for baptism
Pentecost marks the beginning of the Christian church’s mission to the world
you will discover that Pentecost started off as a Jewish celebration
the Jews didn’t call it Pentecost —it was known as the Feast of Harvest or the Feast of Weeks
The day celebrated the beginning of the early weeks of the wheat harvest
This meant that Pentecost was always celebrated during the middle of the month of May or occasionally in early June
the 50th day of Easter would be the Day of Pentecost
Pentecost later came to be known as “week of weeks”
some believers also celebrate the day as the Feast of Harvest or the Feast of Weeks
But we no longer celebrate Pentecost the way they did before
the day is commemorated as the moment in history when Christ ascended to heaven
the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles and other disciples following the crucifixion
it is the day when Christ burst forth and promised his followers that God will forever protect them
Pentecost is also celebrated as the day to honor devout Catholics and their faith
Some of the first Pentecost hymns are composed by Bach in this year
Ireland celebrates Pentecost as a public holiday
and Germany declare Pentecost as a public holiday
Easter celebrates Jesus Christ's resurrection from the dead and the triumph of good over evil
Today is the day to prepare a lavish feast to honor the Holy Spirit
“The Jewish feast of Pentecost (Shavuot) was primarily a thanksgiving for the first fruits of the wheat harvest
but it was later associated with a remembrance of the Law given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai,” according to Britannica
Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and other disciples following the crucifixion
The term Pentecost comes from the Greek Πεντηκοστή (Pentēkostē) meaning “fiftieth”
It refers to the Jewish festival celebrated on the fiftieth day after First Fruits
visiting a church is a great way to celebrate this day
The decorations on the altar and priests in red robes make for a beautiful sight
The hymns that are sung on Pentecost usually invoke a sense of spirit and togetherness
‘Come down O Love Divine’ is one of the most popular Pentecost hymns
Many devotees head to church for baptism on this holy day
Pentecost started off as a Jewish festival
Pentecost was also celebrated to mark the early weeks of the wheat harvest — wheat was harvested in the early weeks of May
Fresh loaves of bread made with the newly harvested wheat are offered by the high priest on Pentecost
Pentecost was a day of celebration and rest — schools and shops were closed
Jewish men would gather in Jerusalem in large numbers to celebrate the proceedings of the day
Pentecost celebrates the faith and love that Christians have for the church and Christ
It’s a good day to reaffirm our spiritual beliefs
Pentecost is a reminder of how many religions and festivities share the same roots
It is also a day to celebrate our shared pasts and customs
We are used to seeing sober colors in churches but on Pentecost
the church altar is done up in red and priests can be seen donning red robes
We keep track of fun holidays and special moments on the cultural calendar — giving you exciting activities

From the 29th of October to the 15th of December
This exhibition aims to highlight the complex restoration work of the painting "Pentecost" by Herrera the Elder
carried out by the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Spain (IPCE)
The work was originally created for the convent of the Merced Calzada in Seville but since the beginning of the 20th century it has been part of the collection of the Museo del Greco
Given the poor state of preservation in which the piece was
and the numerous repaintings and damage it presented
it was sent to the IPCE restoration workshops in 2007
the work already restored is presented to the public
The intervention has allowed us to recover the work in its entire splendor
Francisco Herrera the Elder is the most representative painter of Sevillian School in the first half of the 17th century
he became one of the most praised and esteemed masters of Sevillian baroque naturalism
His work "Pentecost" is an early work within his production
but already with marked naturalistic features on the faces of the figures and in the study of light
traditionally called "Pentecost"
the scene represents the verses following the coming of the Holy Spirit on the apostles (v
without fear and they find a crowd gathered due to the rumble and the cloud of fire formed over the building: a crowd of people from different countries who were amazed to be able to understand the apostles in their own and varied languages
the scene would be representing the Miracle of the languages which marks the beginning of the preaching of Christianity
This interpretation would explain the lack of the dove and of the tongues of fire
and the agitated and extreme attitudes of the first-term gentiles
surrounding the serene and static figures of the Virgin and the apostles located at the back and center of the composition
The painting was apparently made for the Oratory of the Convent of the Merced Calzada in Seville (now the Museum of Fine Arts)
In the 19th century it was included in the catalogue of the private collection of Canon Manuel Lopez-Cepero
and was subsequently put up for sale by his heirs in a public auction in 1860
It probably was one of the pieces purchased from the mercedaries before the French army entered Seville in 1810
Similar compositions can be found in Italy and in Northern European prints from the 16thand beginning of the 17th centuries
These prints might have been a source of inspiration for this composition
No comparison could be found for the white crosses appearing in the cloaks of the apostles and gentiles
but its recurrence throughout the painting means it did have an important and understandable meaning
The losses and folds of the Pentecost affected the signature and
1617 seems an appropriate date which did not arise discussion between historians who always agreed with it
The work was dated through the repainted year; it is possible that the restorer knew which date was painted before the losses occurred
After the news of a Pentecost being painted for the convent of the Merced Calzada in Seville
we do not know anything of the history of the painting until it appears in the hands of Manuel Lopez-Cepero y Ardila
was also a famous painting collector in Spain at his time
gathering in his house over 1000 valuable works; he specialized in Sevillian baroque painters (Murillo
and his gallery was known at the time as the richest in Seville after the local museum
The Vega-Inclan Foundation acquires the painting in 1921
as it had a signature new to the Museum collections
In this year the collections increase with new acquisitions which are exhibited in the “New room”
the foundation aimed to create an exhibition of Spanish art which contextualized the paintings of El Greco
The painting was first restored possibly between 1813 and 1823
At this moment the invasive treatment applied significantly altered the aesthetic nature of the work
The interventions concealed the chromatic and aesthetic quality of the composition
even covering part of the original painting with repaints
was imperative to consolidate and recover the original painting
This restoration work started with a consolidation and cleaning of the pictorial strata in order to make an organized chromatic reintegration
respectful and accurate with the original work
The conservation-restoration process carried out by the IPCE was based on prior knowledge of the work with the examination of the current conservation status
The physicochemical studies are fundamental for an in depth knowledge of the work at material level
we can perceive the artist's way of working
whether or not he had a preparatory drawing
Ultraviolet light photographs were taken to highlight the repainting added in previous treatments and a complete x-ray of the work was carried out
which helped to highlight each of the losses that it presented
which has been a great help during the cleaning and recovery of the original painting
A study was also made using the infrared reflectography technique that did not give the intended results
as it did not show an underlying drawing - possibly due to the dark primer under the color - but which highlighted the faults in the original painting and subsequent additions
micro-samples of the color layer were taken to study
through stratigraphy and chemical analysis
The cleaning and reintegration process of the paint has been very laborious
were intended to cover the numerous losses of polychrome of the piece
producing very considerable longitudinal losses in it
that form a kind of grid that cuts the paint and prevents it from being appreciated as a whole
The treatments carried out at the IPCE have been aimed at cleaning the aged and rusty varnish
consolidating the original paint and reintegrating the chromatic losses
to return a coherent and comprehensive reading of the work
places where there was no danger of subjective interpretations; and
with a discernible technique from the original
based on short vertical lines or trategio (from the Italian tratteggio or rigatino) in all those areas where the losses were larger or affected important elements
