Eternal anomalies in the inconstant business of music
The Innocence Mission are that rare type of band able to faithfully occupy their own niche without ever coming close to feeling stale
Each of their albums is like a world in miniature
where even the smallest of tonal shifts is enough to create a sense of evolution and renewal
When it hits perfectly it’s nothing short of a superpower – a modest one – amped up on demureness and poetic observation
The sense of wonder inherent to Karen Peris’ luminous voice deserves much of the credit for that
earthed as it is by dewy and spacious arrangements that bloom in unhurried and quietly elegant ways: Karen’s flowing piano chords meeting the exceptional guitar work of high school sweetheart turned husband Don and the sympathetic basslines of Mike Bitts
a core member of the band since they formed in ‘86
is one of their most spectacularly beautiful
deserving of mention in the same breath as the classic Befriended (2003) and reminiscent
Arriving almost five years on from their last album See You Tomorrow
which found them judiciously indulging in a slightly grander sound
Midwinter Swimmers finds them mostly deviating back to the mean
luxuriating in familiar sonic spaces made new with greater insight and deepened affection
Birthed partly during the intense early years of the pandemic
Peris says she was obliged to write the songs for Midwinter Swimmers in unusual places so as not to interrupt their Zoom classes: in the garage
sitting cross-legged on the floor of her bedroom like she was a teenager again
but it did make the experience of writing those songs memorable in a new way,” she says
“Just being in a different physical space than usual was interesting.”
2024 marks 35 years since the release of their self-titled debut album – the first of two LPs to be produced by Larry Klein
Joni Mitchell at the time – and 25 years since their fourth and perhaps best-known album Birds of My Neighborhood
which is where Peris picks up when asked to choose the five songs she’s most proud of
Listen any earlier than that and she starts to get a little self-conscious about the naivety of the songs
“I’m really touched and grateful if people have felt a connection with those earlier songs
but I do wish that I’d been able to write better at the time,” she says softly
I was barely out of my teens when I wrote a lot of that
The Innocence Mission first hit their stride with 1995’s third album Glow, with the soaring single “Bright As Yellow” bringing them as close to a mainstream moment as the band have ever come
but it was their shift to home recording for Birds of My Neighborhood that came to define the trio’s unmistakably intimate sound
but for whatever reason I have felt closer to our songs since then,” says Peris
While "Bright As Yellow" didn't make Peris' cut here
the five songs that did are all important milestones in her journey as a songwriter
each one digging into the marrow of important themes of community and friendship
making the minor feel major and charged with meaning
KAREN PERIS: I think this was the first song that I wrote for the Birds of My Neighborhood album
and the last part of that tour was going around Canada opening for Emmylou Harris
I had read that there are so many beautiful lakes in Canada
but we didn’t get to see any of them because we always had to keep moving on to the next place
So I was imagining these lakes and seeing them in my mind’s eye
and that’s why I ended up writing them into the landscape of this song
I felt like the song took on a sort of lakeside atmosphere
feeling like I was surrounded by woods and the glimmering water
to feel like those people are singing with me
We really loved getting to hear her singing every night
The big thing on my mind during that time was that I was longing to be transformed into the mother of a child
we were already years into our sadness about not having been able to have children
That longing is more implicit in some of the other songs on Birds of My Neighborhood than in “The Lakes of Canada”
but I guess that’s a part of it when I am singing about change
I’d say it’s more about wanting to be better at talking and communicating
and the line “I feel that I could change” probably has more in common with other songs that explore that idea
including songs from Midwinter Swimmers – like “A Different Day”
“Orange of the Westering Sun” and even underlying the buoyancy of the song “John Williams” – which have more to do with ideas of trusting
of striving against fearfulness and not letting anxiety get in the way of acting on good intentions
Songs about not being afraid of conversation
I don’t want to impose too much on this song the longing for children
but I can say that the word “change” has itself changed so much for me over the years
When our kids finally were able to be born and then they started to get to school age
I just wanted for everything to stay the same and to be able to hold the present moment
and I find it interesting how some words can change so much in their meaning
I never want to disagree with how someone else hears a song because I feel like the listener is a really important part of any song
and that how someone completes it in their mind is the right way for it to be for them
I would add that the image in the song of feeling a sudden joy at spotting a fish moving through the water is very real to me
and I think it must be common to many people to perceive the gift of a sudden
stronger-than-usual joy that is momentary but sustaining and helpful
I don’t remember exactly what transpired to allow me to put those parts together
I think there were 5 years between Glow and when Birds of My Neighborhood finally came out…
and then our son was born in ‘98 so that was a pretty big deal and brought a lot of changes
I definitely remember recording “The Lakes of Canada” up in our attic with a small studio setup
before Don and my dad built a studio space downstairs in the basement of our house
I think that being able to work on music at home was really good for us and really gave us a sense of exploration in what we were doing
It was such a gift just to be able to take our time and try to get things sounding in a way that seemed right
Being able to just sing by myself in a room with no one else around
I think probably led to a more personal kind of singing
so even in her death it was natural to think of her as being like a beacon
like the image in the song of someone waving around lights on an airport runway signalling a place to land
she worked in a hospice and in people’s homes
caring for them and talking with their families
She always talked to me how it was such a privilege for her to be with people in the last weeks of their lives
and that she’d get a real sense of someone crossing a threshold when they were passing away
She’d talk about there being such a peace about them
so all of that was helpful to me in my being without her
There was a comfort in thinking about all of that
and that’s where this song comes from and why it’s an important one for me
I can’t remember if it was a year or two years after she died that I wrote the song
but I think any time that I could think about her and talk about her was comforting
I should say that those particular words from that song are actually borrowed from the author E.M
either from an essay he wrote or a talk that he gave where he said
I do not want my voice to go out into the air.”
If you look at the lyrics in a physical copy of the record
that part should be in quotation marks and his name in the credits
I felt like I understood what he was saying
so it feels good to keep writing about her
She and my dad really enjoyed travelling there
We were in London one time for work and tried to walk around as much as possible because it was just so beautiful
As a family I think we all have loved Maine so much
which is at the very top of the northeast of our country
We’ve had some really memorable trips up there together
which I also think is a very beautiful city
The Boston Public Library is really amazing
The artist John Singer Sargent painted all these murals on the walls there
and then when you go into the huge children’s book room
everything is decorated with paintings of Curious George
because I think the creators Margret and H.A
Rey were from Massachusetts or had some other connection with Boston
We haven’t travelled a great deal other than touring but it's been such a privilege to get to travel around the country and meet a lot of wonderful people
and to get to experience a real sense of community through music
That’s one of the most affecting things we’ve ever experienced and we are so
I just have to figure out how to be able to do it again
but that’s really different from singing in a concert
I’ve taken a really long break from touring to be able to stay home with our kids
and I didn’t realise that being able to sing for a long time was something that I probably needed to stay in practice about
in order to have the kind of rhythm of breathing that goes along with that
Maybe if we’re able to start with shorter shows
It’s something we’re working on and still trying to figure out
I do miss the community of the mind people we met
KAREN PERIS: I knew I wanted to choose a song from this album
and “The Brothers Williams Said” is one that do feel really close to
I actually started writing it about 10 years before that
but I could never get further with the lyrics than the first few lines or so
and then something – I don’t remember what – prompted me to start playing it on piano instead
and that opened up something in the song for me and then the rest of it unfolded pretty quickly
I was glad when the words were able to resolve in a hopeful way
Before that I didn’t have those parts like “See you tomorrow / Maybe tomorrow
I’ll see you tomorrow,” and I think there’s a suggested hopefulness to those lines
about there being a better understanding between people in the situation that the song is describing
I felt like the piano chords left a lot of space around the melody and the words
and that seemed to make sense to me because the song itself is about quietness
It’s about the experience of shyness and of introversion that so many people have
and it’s especially about the concern that shyness can be misunderstood for unfriendliness
Even if maybe half the world would maybe consider themselves to be introverted
I think there can still be this misperception that shyness is the opposite of friendliness
to be talking about that misperception in this song
People who have a quiet nature might feel very warmly towards other people
they just maybe take a longer time before having the courage to express it
or maybe their voices are sometimes drowned out by the noise around them
We actually recorded this song – at the least the piano and the timpani parts – in the band room of our old high school
which is the same room where I first met Don all those years ago
It was so nice to be able to play their grand piano
because I just have a smaller upright piano at home and this song just seemed to want to have a deeper and richer sound
which I think really adding something lovely to the song
I’m really glad that you could feel that because that’s kind of what I was hoping that the song could convey
I bet it can be hard to be in your situation
but I am sure that your kindness really comes through to the people around you
So much can be conveyed just through a person’s face
and that’s what I was hoping to say in this song as well
I don’t really have a good answer as to why
I don’t even really know many people named William
I think it’s more about the sound of the word and the feeling of it when it becomes joined together with a melody
but it’s a nice thing that just keeps happening
KAREN PERIS: I wasn’t sure which song to pick from A Song is Way Above the Lawn
so I just picked the first song that I wrote for it because I think all the other songs that followed really did come out of this one
This song showed me that I seemed to want to be writing from the perspective of childhood
and that’s such a vast expanse to be travelling
because there’s an endless amount of wonder that’s felt in everyday moments and in the life of the imagination
Even the thought of entering a library can feel like entering a world of doorways to other places
and especially the friendships found in books
I think I needed to give myself permission to keep working on songs from these countries of childhood
maybe because I was worried that it would seem strange to someone else
I felt like calling it a children’s album would maybe make sense of it to other people
but in the end it was received as just a regular album that anyone could enjoy
People didn’t seem to think it was strange
I liked that it could be a way to extend the childhood of our own children
and even for me to be in conversation with my childhood self
which I think it probably always a good thing
We had a set of World Book encyclopedias that one of my brothers had won in a contest
and a set of child craft encyclopedias that went along with that
I remember there were some really interesting stories and poems in those
and some of the story fragments had been illustrated by Maurice Sendak [author of Where the Wild Things Are]
We didn’t have many books other than those
but my parents would often take us to the library
I would take the bus downtown after activities were done and just sit there doing my homework until my dad was done with his work
He worked just down the street from the library and we’d ride the bus home together
we would go to the library downtown every week – the same library – and it looked identical to the way it did when I was little
All those hours spent reading with my kids… I will probably always think of that as the highlight of my life
I loved that we could feel like we were on all these adventures together and still be completely safe at the library or at home
They really liked to be read to up until they were in middle school
and we still read together sometimes just because we enjoy it
Partly I was just thinking of all these big lion statues that are outside of some of our really stately libraries
like the New York City Public Library and the Boston Public Library
and I liked the feeling of these lions being really gentle characters
like someone you could talk to as a friend in childhood
I wanted to convey that finding a sense of friendship
because of the characters we might meet there and feel something kindred with
The world of the imagination is extended in all directions to encompass the people and the landscapes you meet in books
I like the mystery of how even the weather in a book or a poem can override the actual weather where you are
Jane Eyre is a vivid example of that for me
It’s also a lessening of loneliness to feel some kind of understanding with an author
or an extended idea of friendship with other people who have liked the same book
there would be a card in a pocket in the back of every library book where you would sign your name and the librarian would stamp the date
You could see the names of all the people who had read the same book
which in itself could feel like a sort of community
The other part of my answer is that our kids just always loved animals
Our son is really allergic to dogs and cats
but the kids liked any story or picture book that had to do with animals
We were drawing animals together all the time
So that’s really why I put them in these songs
because I liked the idea of the songs extending our memories of all those animal stories we’d read together
KAREN PERIS: I think I choose it mostly because it was a real comfort to work on because I was missing our kids so much when they were away at university
It’s a song about how love can transcend distance
I was trying to map out pictures of connectedness and thinking about all these different kinds of lines that run through the world
and even my wonky way of mending a green cardigan that I was trying to do at the time
and I was trying to criss-cross them all with some green thread
It kind of looked like a street map when it was finished
I remember thinking about how all these different kinds of lines are really just visible and audible signals of our deeper connections with each other
and I’m often walking the same blocks that I walked with our kids when they were little so it can feel sometimes like the landscape is full of doorways to those memories
and like doorways to possibility and just the joy of being alive
I also think that the way a certain kind of weather looks can be a portal in the mind’s eye
I guess I just went down all these different side streets of thoughts and they all sort of merged together in this song
which is trying to get at something having to do with crossing over the distance to someone that I really missed
maybe I am kind of a broken record about that [laughs]
But I have always loved the idea of doorways in landscapes and other places
I loved finding trees that looked like they could have doors in them
trees with knots in the bark that seemed like they could open
I’d imagine different animals visiting each other in the trees and a whole storybook world would appear
I still like the idea of these portals but that’s taken on a different kind of meaning
I think of them now in regards to memories and ways to hold on to these really dear people that I’m missing
in that there can be a lot of trying of different ways and at different times to find the sound that it seems like a song wants to have
We’re always searching for the right ingredients for a song to be able to have an atmosphere that one could enter into
It took us a little while to arrive at the right version of “This Thread is a Green Street”
The song seemed to want to have a little bit more of singing in unison than we’ve tried before
so I tried singing to my own voice a couple of times
It gave the song an atmosphere that seemed to fit what we’d been thinking of
so we just kept going forward with that until it was done
When I listen to other people’s music and when I think about all the different albums I hold in my head of things that I’ve loved
it can feel really mysterious how someone has arrived at the sounds that they’ve used
it’s really a case of just trying to go forward and to listen and pay attention to what might be affecting us as we’re recording
because often that can be the right thing to go with
but I found that one in an anthology and I really loved it right away
It’s so striking that I feel like I was responding just to that one line – is it a street or years
– on a couple of the songs from the new album [like “The Camera Divides the State of Maine”]
and all that question was communicating to me

The fourth RIBA International Prize has been awarded to the Modulus Matrix: 85 Social Housing complex in Cornellà
The design arranges five to six modules worth approximately 139 square feet apiece into 85 homes inspired by Japanese design with 18 on each floor
Circulation cores are placed in each corner of the structure for easier access to the building
and units receive an ample amount of sunlight and are easily cross-ventilated
This "loose fit architecture" (as RIBA's president Muyiwa Oki calls it) is the key that helps the project stand out over more conventional forms of housing
Setting its grid-like layout around a central courtyard facilitates easy movement and social exchange
creating in the end "a democratic house" that is sensitive to multigenerational households and other dynamics thought of by architect Marta Peris during her research into the films of Yasujirō Ozu
Barcelona’s Metropolitan Institute of Land Development and Property Management (IMPSOL) was the client, expanding on its critically well-received housing development model that has produced over 5,000 homes to date in the region
The project was completed in 2021 and stands as Spain’s largest timber frame structure
Peris was joined by her fellow co-founder Jose Toral in saying: "We are very proud of the positive feedback from residents of Modulus Matrix
Some were unsure about features like entering through a terrace
having an open kitchen at the centre of the home
but their perspectives changed after living in the space
Now they feel this way of living better adapts to their needs
Their first-hand experiences provide valuable insights into how housing around the world can evolve."
commented finally: "Through this innovative approach to social housing
Peris + Toral Arquitectes has responded to the shifting demands of societal groupings by crafting a housing project that is adaptive
Not defined by stereotypes or fixed assumptions of what constitutes 'family'
the intelligent organization of space encourages lively interaction and connection within the community
ensuring that the architecture functions on different scales – from the discrete dwelling to the collective space
This building has set a precedent for future developments in Barcelona and beyond."

Olympic gold medalist Nova Peris has suggested favouritism has indeed played a factor in Dancing With The Stars' controversial judging decisions
The former Australian Senator and Olympic field hockey player, 53, was sent home alongside fan-favourite Masterchef judge Julie Goodwin on Sunday night
After a sensational group performance to Kylie Minogue's Step Back in Time
the couples faced off for limited places in the Semi Final
with Nova doing an impressive Cha Cha to I Love the Nightlife
claiming Nova was staying within her capabilities before awarding the performance a mere 19 points - not enough to keep her in the competition
Some fans were so upset by the double elimination that they went so far as to accuse the dancing competition of being 'rigged' on X and Instagram
who scored lower than Julie with the judges
but was kept on to fulfil the show's 'redemption arc' for the troubled sportsman
Speaking to the Daily Mail Australia exclusively on Monday
Nova seemed to give some validation to those sentiments
saying she didn't rate very highly on 'Helen Ritchie's Flirt Board'
Asked what she thought the AFL champion Ben had mastered to progress to the semi-finals ahead of her
'I think he was high up on Helen Richey's flirt board.'
They're looking at different things and they could have a favourite.'
Nova recalled Helen making a comment 'to either Adam [Doville] or James [Stewart] about how good looking they were'
'Do we judge people's performances on their good looks?' she asked
'And Craig Revel got excited when he the saw the men with their shirts unbuttoned.'
'I've I've known Ben for a number of years now,' Nova added on a more serious note
He was an outstanding footballer and I sort of feel that he's back and living his life
'You go into each performance wanting to get to the next dance and it is disappointing,' Nova said of the result
she's not harbouring any hard feelings: 'If was to go out on a bang
then it was a nice way to go out,' she reflected
Speaking about her nerves she felt on the show
the first Aboriginal Australian Olympic gold medallistsaid: 'It's a horrible gut feeling when you're getting out there
It's not as easy as some people think it may be.'
She also classed herself as a 'performer' rather than an 'entertainer' and said that she thought contestants from musical and theatrical professions 'absolutely' had a 'leg up' on the competition
there's a big difference between entertaining and performing on the sports field,' Nova said
'Sam [Jade] and Lisa [McCune] are entertainers by trade
Nova hasn't had the chance to watch the series because she's currently commentating the Paris Olympics but said she had 'really nice comments come through from family and friends'
Fans were in an uproar about Sunday night's elimination
flooding X and the competition's Instagram page with comments such as: 'WTF Julie should of got to stay,' and 'Julie was ripped off bad.'
'Rigged they're really trying to redeem Ben,' another wrote
with a fourth unhappy fan writing: 'Who's voting for Ben
Has to be rigged for their whole bs "redemption arc."' added another
The retired footballer shares the two children with his former partner
Ben won the Brownlow Medal in 2005 and captained the West Coast Eagles from 2001 to 2005
securing the club's best and fairest awards four out of those season
He played 238 games and booted 205 goals for the West Coast Eagles
where he won a premiership with the club in 2006
His dramatic fall from grace was well documented from 2007 as he publicly battled a drug addiction. In 2021, Susan Backshell, who has acted as a mentor for Cousins since his last stint on jail, told Daily Mail Australia that he remains solely focused on his kids.
Sitting in a cold, cramped jail cell for the sixth time in 13 years, Ben decided enough was enough after seven months behind bars in 2020.
'For him to also come out and we all made ourselves vulnerable to perform the way we did, it brought a tear to our eyes seeing Ben on the dancefloor doing the Viennese waltz after the trials and tribulations that he's been through,' Nova added.
'He should be defined as a person who's achieved incredible things on the footy field and he's doing great things with his family life now.'
Dancing With The Stars judge Mark Wilson, who has judged the Australian series for 14 seasons, said he loves that fans are so passionate, but has slammed any suggestions the judging is unfair as 'outrageous'.
The backlash to Julie and Nova's elimination 'is testament to how fierce the competition is this year,' he told Daily Mail Australia on Monday.
'We judge our celebrities purely on the dance routine they perform on the night.
'All four of us judges have extensive experience as judges and dancers and take the integrity of dancing very seriously,' Mark continued.
'Any suggestion of rigging and favouritism from the judges is preposterous and outrageous.
'As judges, we can sometimes disagree,' the five-time Australian dance champion continued. 'But we are all judging the technical ability, the natural talent and the quality of the routine that the celebrities perform on the night.'

Nova Perris says DTWS judges 'could have favourites'Commenting on this article has endedNewest{{#isModerationStatus}}{{moderationStatus}}
Olympic gold medallist and former Federal Senator Nova Peris says she was appalled by Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall’s joke about Willie Rioli’s late father at a Australian Rules Football Hall of Fame function last year
Dunstall told the crowd how one of the few people he had beaten at a pre-season endurance race in the 1990s was Rioli Snr
who died from a heart attack in 2022 aged just 52
“We had a young man come down from the Top End by the name of Willie Rioli… don’t think Willie had done much conditioning
he looked like an 18-gallon keg on legs,” Dunstall told the crowd

“I put my neck out on the line and got him and a week later he was back in the Top End
a fierce advocate for First Nations rights
wrote an impassioned opinion piece detailing how offended she was by the comments and how it spoke to the barriers facing real acceptance for Indigenous Australians
“Dunstall concluded the anecdote by noting that Rioli returned to the Top End shortly after.
It was a deliberate attempt at humour at the expense of a man who had passed away
a proud Aboriginal footballer who cannot speak back
“It was a public humiliation of a man who should be remembered with honour.”
The post came hours after Port Adelaide beat Hawthron. At the end of the spiteful game Rioli Jnr was pushed in the back while scoring a goal after taunting Hawks defender Changkuoth Jiath by holding out the ball towards him before kicking the major. He was then awarded a free kick in the goal square and kicked his second goal in as many minutes.
Dunstall’s speech also came in the midst of Rioli Jnr’s cousin Cyril Rioli’s racism suit against the Hawks. The four-time premiership Hawk and other former Hawthorn Indigenous players late last year settled a federal court case with the club over racism claims.
Rioli Jnr took leave from Port Adelaide after he was subjected to racial abuse online over his post but returned to training on Wednesday and is expected to play against the Swans on Sunday.
Power coach Ken Hinkley called out the racists who had attacked his player and called for tougher punishments for those that peddle racist hate online.
Peris, who campaigned for the Voice in 2023, wrote Dunstall’s anecdote was deeply offensive.
“What astounds me is that Dunstall chose to mock an Aboriginal man, a minority of minorities. Someone who didn’t even get to go on to play a senior AFL game,” she wrote.
“What was there to gain from that? Out of the entirety of what he could have said as a newly inducted legend, he chose to kick someone who isn’t here to defend himself.
The Sport Australia Hall of Fame member, one of only nine Indigenous names on that honour roll among 450, also addressed Dunstall directly.
“Jason Dunstall, you had a moment to elevate the game along with your new status. Instead, you chose to belittle,” she wrote.
“You tarnished what should have been a sacred night. You mocked a man who cannot defend himself. You humiliated a son who is still playing our great game. And you reminded every young Aboriginal child watching that even our dead are not safe.
“You spoke from the heart. You stood up for your father. You stood up for your people. You are not alone. Keep shining because you are the light in the darkness. You are loved, respected, and fiercely supported.”

Olympian Nova Peris has voiced her outrage over a joke AFL legend Jason Dunstall told about an Indigenous former teammate
branding it a 'public humiliation' of a man who couldn't defend himself
Dunstall joked about Willie Rioli Sr as he was elevated to Legend status in an AFL Hall of Fame ceremony last June
the 60-year-old admitted he was never known for his athletic ability and fitness
and illustrated his point by saying in his 14 years with Hawthorn he only beat two other players when it came to endurance - one of whom was Rioli
'I remember we had a young man come down from the Top End
by the name of Willie Rioli,' Dunstall began
'I don’t think Willie had done a lot of conditioning; he looked like an 18-gallon keg with legs.'
The former full-forward recalled that he was catching up to Rioli as they ran laps
with their Hawks teammates cheering Rioli on before Dunstall just pipped him at the finish line
'I got the scent of my first kill – it was invigorating
Peris blasted Dunstall on Thursday, just after Rioli's son, Port Adelaide star Willie Jr, made headlines when he used a fiery social media post to explain that he hates the Hawks because of the way they have treated his family
'I was stunned and appalled by Jason Dunstall's decision to use his Australian Hall of Fame platform to mock the late Willie Rioli Sr,' she told News Corp
'To make a joke at his expense from the podium of one of football's highest honours is not just poor taste
'It is a stark betrayal of what that honour is meant to represent.'
Peris specifically brought up Dunstall's remark about Rioli returning to his home in the Northern Territory
'It was a deliberate attempt at humour at the expense of a man who had passed away
'It was a public humiliation of a man who should be remembered with honour.'
Rioli Sr - who went to high school with Peris - died of a heart attack in 2022
He did not play a first-grade game with Hawthorn after leaving his home in the Tiwi Islands to try to make it in Melbourne
'You don’t just mock a man; you mock a people
A people who have already been knocked down by history time and again,' Peris said
'And to do that from the most prestigious platform in the sport is not only gutless
Willie Rioli Jr was given time off by Port Adelaide after his post about Hawthorn resulted in him suffering racist abuse online
Peris said the Power star was 'deeply' impacted by Dunstall's joke 'not because he's bitter
Rioli Jr's uncle Cyril Rioli, who won four flags with the Hawks in a stellar career, left the game due to allegedly racist treatment he received while he was with the club, and was involved in taking the Hawks to the Australian Human Rights Commission along with three other First Nations families.

and political risk to the capital markets is on the rise
a generation of white-collar baby boomers is heading into retirement with insufficient assets in their 401(k) programs
and industrial workers are stuck with materially underfunded pension plans
the investing industry’s current set of practices and assumptions―modern portfolio theory (MPT)―is based on a half-century-old formula that is supposed to deliver the maximum amount of return for a given amount of risk
The trouble is that it doesn’t work very well
In Getting Back to Business: Why Modern Portfolio Theory Fails Investors and How You Can Bring Common Sense to Your Portfolio
dividend-investing guru Daniel Peris proposes a radical new approach―radical in that it does away with MPT in favor of a more intuitive
common-sense approach practiced by business people in their own affairs every day: cash returns on cash investments
Peris will also discuss being a historian in a profession with a notably low historical sensibility
How did a historian of the early Soviet period end up as a portfolio manager with $25 billion under advisement
and author of three books on dividend investing
Copies of Getting Back to Business will be raffled off to attendees

Daniel is a Senior Portfolio Manager at Federated Investors
overseeing the firm’s dividend-focused products
He’s also the author of four books on investing
including his most recent: “The Ownership Dividend: The Coming Paradigm Shift in the Stock Market.”
Daniel and Demetri spend the first hour of their conversation discussing the relevant history that explains how the stock market went from a mostly cash-based system where all or almost all companies if they weren’t in distress
paid dividends to a public investment landscape driven entirely or almost entirely by near-term share price movements
The second hour provides listeners with more actionable information about how to position oneself to profit from a paradigm shift in markets that Daniel argues is already underway
They discuss the pros and cons of dividend investing
how Daniel approaches portfolio construction regarding dividend-yielding stocks
and how the changes he forecasts will alter the investment landscape and economic opportunities for businesses and workers alike

The culmination of the Melbourne event will see one of Cooper’s great, great-grandsons, Michael McDonogh, present a Victorian government representative with a statement of unity calling for an end to racism and greater social cohesion.
A sharper message is expected to be delivered by Peris. Her support for Israel since the October 7 atrocities has put her at odds with Aboriginal activists such as Gary Foley – a student of Cooper’s life and now a prominent figure with the pro-Palestine protest movement – and Indigenous senator Lidia Thorpe, who regularly attends pro-Palestine rallies and has drawn parallels between the experience of Indigenous Australians and Palestinians.
According to a copy of her speech provided to this masthead, Peris will tell a group of multi-faith leaders and Jewish and Aboriginal community members that, in leading an Australian Aborigines’ League protest 86 years ago against the persecution of distant people he had never met, Cooper showed a moral clarity needed today.
“When he marched to the German consulate in 1938, he didn’t march for his own people. He marched for the Jewish people – strangers to him but bound to him by a shared understanding of suffering and the unyielding belief in justice,” Peris will say.
“He knew, as we must, that the fight against hate anywhere is a fight against hate everywhere.
“As I reflect on his legacy, I see the deep parallels between the Aboriginal and Jewish peoples. Both of us have endured systemic oppression and attempts to erase our histories, and yet both of us have survived—stronger, prouder, and more determined to ensure that these injustices are never forgotten.
“William Cooper’s protest ... was an extraordinary act of courage. It was an act of empathy, of moral clarity, and of profound humanity. It reminds us that we cannot stand silent in the face of injustice.”
Cooper’s story was first brought to the attention of the Melbourne Holocaust Museum by Foley and now forms part of permanent Holocaust exhibits in Melbourne, Sydney and Jerusalem.

McDonogh offers this perspective: “I think he would still be standing up for all kinds of human rights. But if one side refuses to acknowledge the other side’s existence, what are they supposed to do? If you are on the side of human rights, how can you pick a side?”
There is dispute about some details of Cooper’s 1938 protest, which was sparsely documented in contemporaneous written records.
There is no surviving copy of the text he is said to have left with the German consulate. Monash historian Bain Attwood, a Cooper biographer, doubts whether he would have walked to Footscray from the city, given his advanced years and ill health at the time. He argues that elements of the story have morphed from history into myth.
Abe Schwarz, an interfaith and social justice campaigner who has spent 20 years raising public awareness of Cooper’s protest, said the accepted account was largely based on the oral testimony of witnesses to the event.

In repeating blatant Zionist propaganda to justify her support for Israel, Nova Peris erroneously and harmfully conflates Jewish identity with support for the Zionist project in Palestine, which in effect depicts all Jews as complicit in Israel’s criminality. Her abject apologism also betrays all indigenous peoples’ struggles against colonial oppression.

She's appearing on the new season of Dancing with the Stars
which started on Channel Seven on Sunday night
and can talk about sequins with the best of them
Olympic gold medalist and former senator Nova Peris is one of the contestants on this year's Dancing with the Stars
Pictures by Nicholas WilsonBut she can also get serious
Very serious about her support for Israel and her disgust at some of the antics of pro-Palestinian protesters in Australia
as Senator Fatima Payman has resigned from the Labor Party over her support for Gaza and protesters have scaled the roof of Parliament House and unfurled pro-Palestinian banners down its facade
The same building where 53-year-old Peris spent almost three years as a Labor Senator for the Northern Territory
the first Aboriginal woman elected to federal parliament
And the pro-Gaza graffiti that has defaced war memorials on Canberra's Anzac Parade three times this year
"Eight thousand Jewish people fought for the freedom of every single person in this country and how anyone can attack the War Memorial
The politician's job is to represent the constituents of this continent
This is a kick in the guts for all Australians who have enjoyed the freedoms and liberties of this country."
who was the first Indigenous person to win an Olympic gold medal (for hockey) and the first person to make back-to-back Olympics finals in two different sports (hockey and athletics) says she loves Australia deeply and "represented this country with pride"
She's walked the Kokoda Trail more than once in honour of her great-grandfather Jack Knox
who served in the 2nd/16th Battalion AIF in the Syria/Lebanon and Kokoda campaigns from 1942 to 1945
And she's been very public about her support for Israel and its right to exist since the October 7 massacre by Hamas terrorists
"I went to Israel four days after I finished filming Dancing with the Stars
And she is not bothered by any blow-back about her support for Israel
I stand with the Jewish people Every day," she said
"Because I know my history and I know what they've done for the Aboriginal people
They've litigated some of the biggest lands rights cases
My country in Arnhem - that was the Jewish bar
The freedom rides with Charlie Perkins - six Jewish people were on that bus
Who helped the civil rights movement in the United States
This season's Dancing with The Stars cast
Picture by Jeremy GreiveThere's a steeliness to Peris
She says she went on Dancing with the Stars to help promote "Aboriginal people in a positive light" and encourage health and fitness
Since moving back to her hometown of Darwin
she says she's gone to way too many funerals of people dying way too young
"I've been to a number of funerals where Aboriginal people are dying in their early 50s
People I went to school with who have passed away
is 10 to 15 years less than non-Aboriginal people," she said
Nova with dance partner Craig Monley who won Dancing with the Stars in 2007 with actress Bridie Carter
Picture by Nicholas WilsonEven well before the show
the mother-of-three had got match-fit for her Kokoda campaigns
She is still in demand as a public speaker and says Australians still wants to see the fit young woman who won her gold medal in hockey nearly 30 years ago at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games
Dancing with the Stars just took her fitness up another notch
I had a great time and met a whole new family," she said
"I knew a few of them before going into it
"The extent of my dancing before then was mostly with the Hockeyroo girls after we'd won several tournaments," she added
And she will be involved with the Paris Olympics as an expert commentator for the hockey and athletics
She'll be doing it from a studio in Melbourne but the Peris family will be well-represented in Paris
this is her third Olympics with the Hockeyroos
My daughter and my sister and a heap of family members are all going over to the Olympics

Nova Peris OAM has achieved many “firsts”
The 53-year-old was the first Indigenous Australian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal
and the first Indigenous woman elected to federal parliament
Peris hasn’t stopped putting her fitness prowess to good use
Here’s what we know about Nova Peris and her family
Against the advice of her friends and family
a 17-year-old Nova moved to Queensland with footballer Sean Kneebone
she returned to Darwin to live with her family
Peris welcomed her first daughter Jessica.
Describing her relationship with Sean as “up and down and all over the place” in her autobiography Nova, My Story
the athlete felt like a single mother during the early years of her daughter’s life
“I realised I didn’t want my daughter growing up thinking
my mother put up with it; it must be normal or acceptable behaviour,” she told The Age in 2003
A year prior, the hockey player met sprinter Daniel Bateman at the Sydney Olympics
they were married just weeks before the birth of their daughter Destiny
named Jack – who is now an Essendon AFL player
Nova has been happily married to her husband Scott Appleton
trials & tribulations he’s stood by me,” she wrote on social media in 2018
“Love him to the moon & back a million times.”
The Dancing With The Stars celeb is also a grandmother to 15-year-old Isaac
who is the son to her eldest daughter Jessica
And it seems athleticism runs in the family
Nova shared an impressive video of Isaac during a soccer match
“My 11 year old grandson Isaac kicking a great left foot goal
Made it look easy!” the proud grandmother wrote.

there is mass shock and anger over Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza
The opposition is such that the federal Labor government
which has backed and aided the Israeli assault
has cynically sought to distance itself from the consequences
shedding crocodile tears over the mass civilian deaths while continuing to support the Israeli regime
it is striking that the most rabid defenders of the Israeli war crimes
are a layer of prominent Indigenous leaders
exposes the fraud that these figures speak on behalf of oppressed Aboriginal people
they are representatives of a corrupt and privileged elite
state and military structures of capitalist rule
Labor Party parliamentarian and Indigenous leader
defending Israel and branding any opposition to it as antisemitic
which is being boosted through paid advertising
It was clearly developed in conjunction with Zionist organisations
including with an interview where she called for pro-Palestinian activists to be imprisoned
In the comments from the video that have received the most media attention
Peris denounced pro-Palestinian protesters for flying the Australian Indigenous flag
Adopting the tone of an exasperated lawyer
about to launch action for a copyright infringement
prior and informed consent to use our flag for your cause?”
in that Peris played a leading role in a successful campaign to end copyright restrictions on the flag several years ago
The media focus on the flag issue has been used to obscure the extraordinary character of the video as a whole
It is among the clearest public articulations in Australia over the past four months of the ethno-nationalist and fascist program underlying the Israeli onslaught on Gaza
There is nothing in Peris’ diatribe with which hardened Israeli/Zionist settlers who steal Palestinian land and chant “death to the Arabs” would disagree
Peris begins with a potted history of the role played by Jewish lawyers in Indigenous legal cases
including those establishing Aboriginal land rights
Native title and land rights have been used by the Indigenous elite to amass substantial funds through access deals with mining and other corporations
while the vast majority of Indigenous people have remained in abject poverty
the fact that some of the lawyers who took land rights cases happened to be Jewish would be of limited interest to anyone who did not have an unhealthy obsession with race and ethnicity
Her entire argument is premised on a complete identification of Judaism and the Jewish people with Israel
opposed by a growing number of Jews around the world
associating the Jewish people with a militarist and authoritarian state as it perpetrates heinous war crimes
Peris references the doctrine of terra nullius
Latin for “land belonging to nobody,” which was used to justify the British colonisation of Australia and the dispossession of its Indigenous population
Terra nullius formed a key component of vicious anti-Aboriginal racism
and denied any significance to the continuous Indigenous presence in Australia
which is thought to span 60,000 years or more
what on earth does it have to do with defending Israel as it is ethnically-cleansing Indigenous Palestinians
It was not the Palestinians who were under assault
Peris was committed to “helping your people overturn a similar lie which is now being told against the Jewish people
That they have no connection to the land of Israel
that they are ‘settler colonists.’ It is clear that enemies of the Jewish people now seek to impose a myth of terra nullius on the Jewish people
the indigenous inhabitants of the land of Israel.”
Peris declared: “It is historically and archaeologically proven that they were there fighting for their freedom in Israel before the birth of Christ and over a thousand years before the advent of Islam.”
Those remarks are a combination of historical falsification
religious obscurantism and ethno-supremacism straight out of the fascist playbook
denies that the Palestinians have continuously occupied the land that is now Israel for generations and generations
emerged in Europe in the latter part of the 19th century
far more connected to political events in Europe than anything that had occurred in the Middle East millennia before
with far greater numbers of Jewish people adhering to the internationalist perspective of the socialist movement
including those that led to the victory of Hitler
and then the horrors of the Holocaust for Zionism to establish a mass base of support among Jewish people
The state of Israel was formed in 1948 as an imperialist outpost
Its establishment was based on the brutal ethnic cleansing of Palestinians through terror and mass murder
This was justified with a doctrine very similar to terra nullius
with Zionists claiming that Palestinian villages
that they weren’t putting the land to great use
there are clear and distinct parallels between the colonial dispossession of the Australian Aboriginal people and the neo-colonial dispossession of the Palestinians
Peris was simply mouthing Zionist talking points
The claim that a substantial Jewish presence in what is now Israel
justifies the establishment of an exclusively Jewish nation-state 2,000 years later
but the foundation of this argument is religious
not “archaeological” or “historical,” in the line that the Jewish people deserve the state of Israel
because it was purportedly promised to them by God
The entire premise is a mythical and ethno-nationalist one
before modern nation-states were even known
are marshaled as the pretext for maintaining an ethnically-exclusive nation-state in the 21st century
Peris’ line about a Jewish presence in Israel predating the birth of Christ and the creation of Islam was clearly aimed at justifying the doctrine of Jewish racial domination that is the foundation of the Israeli state
Peris’ arguments are the same as those advanced by far-right Zionists
who insist on a providential Jewish right to conquer and occupy Gaza
the West Bank and other parts of a supposed greater Israel
It should be noted that the Australian Jewish Association
which has thanked Peris for her video and aggressively promoted it
has ties to settler organisations in Israel
It is these forces whose bidding Peris is doing
In an interview yesterday on the right-wing “Sky News,” Peris made another remarkable intervention
the contents of a secret WhatsApp chat group was leaked and published online
involving Jewish creatives and pro-Israel activists
plotted to dox Palestinians and to have them fired from their jobs for opposing the assault on Gaza
instead presenting the leak of the chat as a violation of privacy and the publication of a “Jew list.”
Peris repeated these talking points to Sky
The leaking had incited “racial harassment,” “pain” and “violence,” she asserted without a shred of evidence
This necessitated “harsh measures.” “I would call for a prison sentence,” Peris declared
The former athlete is not only supporting a genocide
but is also calling for police-state repression against those who oppose it
Peris’ reactionary positions are not an aberration
another Indigenous leader Professor Marcia Langton branded all opposition to the Israeli onslaught as antisemitic and rejected any identification between the historic oppression of the Aboriginal people and the Palestinians
Speaking to the Murdoch-owned Australian newspaper
Langton declared that the Palestinians were effectively responsible for their own slaughter
Other Indigenous leaders have put forward similar positions
crass and opportunist interests are a factor
one of the most prominent Zionist lobbyists in the country
was also a founding board member and then co-chair of Reconciliation Australia
which purports to advance the interests of Indigenous people
He has a close relationship with Langton and several other Indigenous leaders
But more fundamental than that is the class position of the Aboriginal leaders
They are representatives of an elite that has been cultivated for years and that has its own selfish and predatory interests
distinct from and opposed to those of ordinary people
The intensely hostile attitude of figures such as Peris and Langton to the Palestinians is not fundamentally different to their attitude to impoverished Indigenous Australians
a party that has been involved in every attack on Indigenous people over the past century or more
Langton was a defender of the Northern Territory Intervention
a brutal military-police occupation of Aboriginal lands
Their aim is to promote division on every front
The only means by which the onslaught against the Palestinians in Gaza can be stopped is through the mobilisation of the working class on an international scale against war and capitalism
The same is true for ending the oppression of Indigenous people in Australia

It has a lot meaning to me AVA means “Life” and “Peris” was my father’s name in Greek mythology it also means “angel” benevolent creature who has come down to earth to change the world
When did you discover your love for your craft and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in it
I grew up in a strict religious household and we would go to church a lot that is where I started realizing that singing was my passion
I started composing songs since I was 6 years old
I used to record over cassette tapes that is how I would express myself through singing and writing
I also would have an entire book of poems that I would write
I had a lot of family problems growing up so music is the only thing that got me through it all
To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style
I love all types of music and listen to everything from classical one day to r&b another day
I would not say my sense of style comes from anyone
I have a lot of old inspirations and listen to music also from the jazz era like Etta James as an example but my style was created by me
I wrote this piece because of the times that we are all going through right now it is a difficult time for all of us
I usually write about the mood that I am feeling
During this time I had a lot of feelings running through my mind and one of them was love
I created this to help anyone get through this difficult time with or without their significant other
uplifting piece that is motivating and liberating all at the same time
and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic
It’s all about working smart a bit of trying and not trying in life in order to have balance
Work hard is key and talent is the cherry on top of the cake
What would be someone’s biggest challenge for someone I turn it into my biggest success
Music is always on my mind and always in my life and it is a passion of mine that will never die out no matter what because I believe in my self and what I do

Vicente Peris recently found an artistic home in this city’s own historic core
he is currently witnessing a resurfacing of mindful aesthetic desires
Currently fascinated by the population of a city constantly in flux
and unique restless desire accompanies the vast observations of Peris in this transformative space
Peris has held numerous exhibitions in Europe
and South America; with prominent solo shows in Spain
Yet the fresh eyes by which he witnesses this city
and confronting them; allowing Peris to explore a vast number of realities
which currently occupy his aesthetic production
Shadow as Witness marks Peris’ 1st ever exhibition in the city of Los Angeles
artist from all over the world converge in this aesthetic space to question what happens after chiaroscuro
How are those realities different than our own
The centerpiece of the exhibition Sombra Liberada (Liberated Shadow)
showcases Peris’ more recent aesthetic queries
Inside this Calderesque mobile installation meant to surround and envelope the viewer
a largely yet playful group of individuals sliced in motion and rendered in acetate invites the public to join and play
Intimately shifting the reality of observed time yet permitting the viewer to occupy the space of the work itself; allow for an engagement friendly conceptual distortion of space and time
Which is the current core of Peris’ practice
as he believes that contemporary art is vastly preoccupied with the market and a series of other larger and exterior concerns that allow artists to forget that what matters at the end of the day is the truth
Vicente PerisLa Sombra Liberada, 2017CuratorLoveVicente Peris alongside Lino Martinez will speak about their aesthetic practices (conversation in Spanish) on April 7th
CuratorLove's exhition Shadow as Witness is located at 560 S Main St (7th floor)
in the historic core of Downtown Los Angeles
Gallery hours are Friday & Satuday from 12-5pm or by appointment

When Nova Peris steps out on Dancing with the Stars, in a tangerine jive dress by Indigenous designer Paul McCann depicting the Seven Sisters of the Milky Way
she will be far from the first athlete to enter the celebrity ballroom competition and not the first politician either
But she is the first with both credentials
which empowers Aboriginal people through nutrition
and former Labor senator couldn’t pass up the opportunity to practise as she preaches
But some of my people are dying in their early 50s – people I went to school with
I’m still very active in the public-speaking space
and I’m always telling kids to try new things and ‘Don’t be afraid of what other people think of you
Former Olympian and politician Nova Peris makes her Dancing with the Stars debut with dance partner Craig Moloney
For the 21st season, hosted by Sonia Kruger and new Seven recruit Dr Chris Brown
including actors Lisa McCune and James Stewart
MasterChef Australia’s Julie Goodwin and Hayden Quinn
and Adam Dovile from Better Homes and Gardens
She had previously encountered fellow competitors and former AFL stars Shane Crawford and Ben Cousins in the sporting arena
and she knew a little of SAS Australia’s intimidating instructor
from when her sprinter daughter Jessica appeared on his show
myself and Ben – when we competed at our highest
‘We have to go out and entertain the crowd’
Peris did not seek advice from One Nation senator Pauline Hanson
who was the first politician to appear on Dancing with the Stars when it launched in 2004: “No
in her tangerine jive dress by Indigenous designer Paul McCann
Peris has remained active in politics since her 2016 retirement
She campaigned for the Indigenous Voice to parliament referendum and
became the inaugural co-patron of Labor Friends of Israel
along with former Victorian premier Daniel Andrews
As Australia’s first Indigenous female federal parliamentarian
Peris is used to the assumption she is the inspiration for Deborah Mailman’s “captain’s pick” senator in ABC drama Total Control
“So much so that you even see Deb Mailman wearing outfits which are very similar to the outfits that I wore
a pearl necklace and the rest of it,” says Peris
“But [the series’ creators] will tell you it’s got nothing to do with my time in parliament.”
Neither her sporting nor political backgrounds were much use in the studio
where Peris undertook the “intense” nine-week training regime with regular dancer Craig Moloney
who last year partnered Christie Whelan Browne
“They say [dancing] is the only time you ever use both sides of your brain,” says Peris
“It was extra hard because I have bone-on-bone arthritis in my right knee
It was extremely different to when I was on Australian Survivor when everyone wanted to stab you in the back
She agrees with the common observation that the judges (Craig Revel Horwood
Sharna Burgess and Mark Wilson) tend to go easy on male footballers
There was one time when one of the judges said
‘I just want to jump over the bench and give you a big kiss!’ … We all had a laugh.”
Peris’ next television gig is commentating on the Paris Olympics for Stan Sport
That’s one of the reasons I did [Dancing with the Stars]
‘Anything is possible to those who see the invisible’.”

the well-respected London costume hire and making company has joined the international collection of celebrated costume companies carefully curated by the Peris Costumes Group
The partnership brings massive benefits to the UK film and tv production industry as Academy Costumes can widen its doors and offer clients direct access to Peris’s vast inventory of twelve million high-quality garments covering every historical period from the Ancient World through to today’s Contemporary and Designer pieces
The size of the inventory actively promotes sustainability coupling quality with the quantity to meet all production needs
Commenting on joining the Peris Group and developing the Academy brand founder and owner Adrian Gwillym says
“We have always made for any historical period but our hire stock has always been heavily focused on the 20th century which naturally hindered Academy working on many productions set in a different time period
With Academy joining the Peris Group and network all our clients will benefit
They will still be working with the Academy they’ve always known but now we can deliver costumes of all time periods as well as giving an incredible depth to our making services.”
“When I first visited Peris I was blown away by the quality and sheer scale of their stock but equally impressive is their ateliers making custom pieces at the highest quality and speed combine traditional techniques with modern manufacturing technology
When I started Academy in 1984 my goal dream was to create the best making workshop in the world and now the partnership with Peris finally makes my dream come true….oh
” I am delighted with Academy joining the group and network
From the moment I met Adrian there was an instant rapport
I have always had a deep respect for the history of Peris and I wanted to build on the roots laid down in 1856 and develop a costume hire service that respected tradition but catered for the demands of 21st century film and tv production.”
“With that in mind I have built a global network spanning 22 countries and the Peris philosophy in every country is for each of our partners to maintain their own identity and Peris helps to develop their individual brands.”
“currently the group has just over twelve million garments and we’re constantly adding to it to maintain it’s quality and relevance to any period of history
My goal has always been to stand out for our commitment to quality
making it a go-to resource for costume designers worldwide.”
“We’re looking forward to the opening of our London warehouse but in the mean- time we are bridging the gap between London
We’re using the benefits of today’s technology to virtually bring you closer to Madrid and the networks vast collection coupled with our own delivery system
At the same time we’re extending our program of inviting everyone as our guest to visit the heart of our collection in Madrid
Working together we can face today’s production requirements.”
and How You Can Bring Common Sense to Your Portfolio.” Before transitioning into asset management
Today’s conversation is about the evolution of financial theory
beginning with the rough and tumble world of 19th-century finance with its stock syndicates
and Jay Gould conspired and fought to take from Joe Public
the riches afforded to them by laissez-faire capitalism and the industrial revolution
The first deals with the world as it was before 1929 with its unregulated
The second part explores the world after the Great Crash
and intellectual – supported the procurement and distribution of a new set of financial theories that promised to explain away uncertainty and guide the allocation of risk in the pursuit of profits
we cannot help but function under the fallacies of its paradigms
One of these fallacies is the notion that economies are independent phenomena that operate
according to a certain set of physical laws
Most people will acknowledge that our economic and financial models are imperfect
but most people also think of them as being somewhat analogous to models developed in the natural sciences
Because of this false comparison to physics (equilibrium) and nature (normal distributions)
people often remain unaware of the centrality of politics in theories of the economy
Economies are not independent phenomena that answer only to the laws of nature
They are political and social phenomena that exist within a political system
Theories of the economy that do not take into account the system within which they operate are flawed…in some cases
are better at describing how the banking system operates in a laissez-faire society
whereas Modern Monetary Theory is better at describing how it works in our current
fiat-based system of unrestrained credit growth
What often happens is that devotees of these different schools are actually advocating for a specific set of policies
under the pretense that their views are scientific and that their policies derive logically from some objective view of how an ideal economy operates
they are based on political values and societal ideals
The MMT school is full of progressive social-democrats who want governments to play a larger role in the economy
whereas the Austrian school is full of conservative libertarians who want less government
This sorting along political lines is not a coincidence
Investment theories operate rather differently than theories about the economy
in that there is no argument in the investment world about what matters most
the discrepancies between various investment theories require alternative explanations that do not rely on political ideology or moral sentiment
It would seem sufficient to declare that the widespread adoption of theories like Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT)
was enabled by the growth of a large middle class with excess income available for investment that had not directly experienced the boom and bust of the Roaring 20’s and accelerated by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) of 1974
Entrepreneurially minded financial industry professionals saw an opportunity
but this opportunity required a more streamlined approach to investing and one that would put themselves
The need to bring order to the chaotic world of prices has encouraged the adoptions of systematic investment strategies that claimed the ability to quantify risk
When it comes to investing other people’s money
easy-to-understand theory that provides the illusion of control is a very valuable tool
it is no wonder how theories purporting to quantify risk and target reward proliferated so quickly
It was in everyone’s interest that they do so
How these theories came together to form the dominant
ideological template of risk-adjusted-return measured against exposure to the broader market is the essence of today’s episode
Its significance can be found in the implications associated with equating diversification with correlation: trading idiosyncratic risk for systemic risk and what happens when everyone is doing it

Olympic champion and former Labor senator Nova Peris has resigned as co-chair of the Australian Republican Movement in response to what she described as an “inaccurate and divisive” public intervention made by her fellow leader
Peris said her position with the ARM, a cause she has been prominently involved with since the lead-up to the failed 1999 referendum, was untenable following Foster’s publication of an open letter to FIFA and Football Australia calling for Australia to support Israel’s suspension from international football

She said Foster’s emotive letter posted to his nearly 30,000 Instagram followers, which included a “flat-out wrong” statement about what the International Court of Justice had found about Israel’s conduct of the war in Gaza
“I don’t believe that inaccurate and divisive public statements like the one made to FIFA are appropriate,” Peris said in a statement to this masthead
“Given our different styles of leadership and our different visions on how to promote dialogue
it is untenable for me to continue alongside Craig as co-chair of the ARM and I’ll be stepping down.”

Responding on social media to Peris’ resignation
Foster wished his former co-chair well and thanked her for an “incredible contribution” to the republican movement

Peris is a staunch supporter of Israel and has publicly disavowed attempts by pro-Palestinian activists to co-opt the Aboriginal rights movement and frame Israel as the colonial oppressor of indigenous Palestinians

continuous connection Jews have to the same land
a former Socceroos captain and a human rights activist
through its “mass slaughter of innocent Palestinians” is in breach of international law
In his letter urging Football Australia to suspend Israel’s involvement in the world game
Foster said the International Court of Justice had deemed “plausible genocide” in Gaza
Peris, in her statement, pointed out the court had made no such finding. The then court president who made the ruling, Joan Donoghue, has publicly clarified that the court found that Palestinians have a “plausible right” to be protected from genocide
The court refused a request by South Africa to order a ceasefire in Gaza
Peris also took issue with Foster’s characterisation of Israel as an apartheid regime
and said she observed during her recent trip to Israel that Arab Israelis enjoyed the full benefits of citizenship and political participation
These rights do not extend to Palestinians living in the occupied territories
Peris argues it is not in Australia’s interest to import overseas conflicts and amplify them
particularly at a time when the polarisation of politics and the rise in hate speech are destabilising our liberal democracy and radicalising some young people
“Criticism of Israel’s government or the conduct of the war is entirely legitimate,” she said
labelling anyone who believes Israel has a simple right to exist a ‘genocide supporter’ or calling for the destruction of the world’s only Jewish state ..
“We live far from many of the world’s conflicts

and that dialogue rather than exclusion was the best way to promote reconciliation
was due to vote last Friday on the Palestinian Football Association motion to suspend Israel
FIFA president Gianni Infantino deferred the vote pending further legal advice
in a letter to this masthead sent last week and before FIFA’s scheduled vote
said global sport has a duty to prevent “the gravest crimes against humanity”
“Social cohesion is based on equality of treatment
and a failure to speak the truth when any injustice occurs
and the only way to do that is to ensure that all states found to be in danger of committing genocide or guilty of apartheid have their membership withdrawn.”
Australia’s peak Jewish community representative organisation
wrote to Football Australia chairman Anter Isaac ahead of the scheduled FIFA vote urging him not to support the motion
speaking confidentially to discuss internal matters
This is consistent with FA’s long-held position of remaining neutral in the Israel-Palestine conflict
The Socceroos are scheduled to play a World Cup qualifier against Palestine in Perth on June 11
In a fresh development this week
a prosecutor from the International Criminal Court
a judicial body separate to the International Court of Justice
requested arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and three Hamas leaders for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity
The request will be decided by a panel of magistrates
Peris and Foster were appointed co-chairs of the Australian Republican Movement in March last year following the resignation of long-serving chair Peter FitzSimons
The dual appointment required a change to the ARM’s constitution
The resignation of Peris – an Olympic gold medallist with the women’s hockey team and also an Olympic sprinter, who later served as a Labor senator from 2013 to 2016 – comes as political support for a republic has stalled following last year’s failed referendum to establish an Aboriginal Voice to parliament
Although Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is an avowed republican who has promised to put the question to another referendum
the Assistant Minister Responsible for a Republic
this year described it as “not a priority” for the federal government
The ARM normally holds its annual general meeting in October but is considering bringing forward this year’s meeting, which includes national committee elections, to August to avoid a potential clash with King Charles’ planned visit to Australia

Nova Peris has quit her position on the Long Walk Foundation board as a result of feeling 'disrespected' by Essendon chief executive Xavier Campbell
who was the first Aboriginal person to win Olympic gold
had played a leading role in the organisation which advocates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people
'My decision is due to the Essendon Football Club CEO Xavier (Campbell) and the disrespectful treatment I have endured by him,' Peris' resignation email explained.
'The utter disrespect I have been shown with this project is nothing short of disgraceful and I find Xavier's leadership extremely poor which is a sad reflection on the Essendon Football Club as an organisation which is why I have had to remove myself from the board due to the association with EFC.
'No wonder our Aboriginal kids continually struggle, when people like myself get so disrespected and used up by the systems.
'It is my hope that in time, the AISHoF (Aboriginal and Islander Sports Hall of Fame) will have a new home somewhere independent of the EFC because they are acting like they own our history and they most certainly do not.'
One such instance in which Peris is understood to have felt disrespected, according to the Herald Sun, is when Essendon pushed back on plans to pay for the transportation of a bronze statue of Peris from Federation Square to The Hanger.
The statue - worth $250,000 - is expected to be moved to the bridge which connects the city with the MCG because the Bombers refused to pay the reported $2,000 for it to be moved to Tullamarine.
Moreover, Daniel Andrews' government were reportedly willing to split the bill with the AFL club to help fund the move, but Essendon declined, while Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett contacted Campbell offering to help when he learned of the drama.
However, Campbell promptly phoned Peris to ask why his counterpart was interfering.
'You would all know how much I have loved being a part of the journey, the importance of shaping the future of this country coupled with the fact that I love my brother Michael [Long] and sister Leslie,' she wrote in her email to fellow Long Walk board members.
'This decision has not come lightly because I know how much I was valued by you all and in the absence of Michael, I have always stepped-up and represented his journey, as his story is also my own.
'My decision has nothing to do with any of you or The Long Walk Foundation itself. My decision is due to (Campbell).'
Campbell recently signed a two-year extension to remain in his post as Essendon chief executive - a move that has not gone down well among supporters given the Bombers' poor performances on the pitch.
Essendon legend Michael Long told the Herald Sun on Wednesday night: 'We don't want her to go,' Long told the Herald Sun on Wednesday night.
'Nova's like a sister to me and I love her. She's self-made and a very proud Aboriginal woman.'
Long added that he had not read Peris's email in full, but insisted the Long Walk Foundation always 'had the great support of Xavier Campbell'.

Social Housing in Ibiza by Peris+Toral Arquitectes
Project description by Peris + Toral ArquitectesThe desire to obtain homes that do not require an active heating or cooling system has conditioned the entire proposal
From the orientation of the building to the construction system. The construction system of load-bearing walls with 20cm thick compacted earth blocks (BTC) with a density of about 2000kg/m3 offers a lot of inertia
a sufficient mass to solve the acoustics between neighbors with a single sheet
the clays give it a hygrothermal behavior that allows regulation of the humidity of the environment.Social Housing in Ibiza by Peris+Toral Arquitectes
Photograph by Jose Hevia. In a heterogeneous environment without a very defined urban fabric
the proposal prioritizes sunlight and orientation to the sea to find the prevailing winds of the Embat during the day and the Terral at night.Three aggregation units of up to four homes per landing
allow all typologies to face south and have cross ventilation
which concentrates the building in one piece
whose scale dialogues with the surrounding buildings
in keeping with the volume of the neighboring single-family homes
through discontinuities that favor the use of roof terraces as terraces or green roofs. The result is an articulated volumetry
which multiplies the number of corners –vortices– of the building to increase the speed of the air
This solution improves ventilation in a climate like that of Ibiza
in which the behavior of the building in summer is of particular concern.Social Housing in Ibiza by Peris+Toral Arquitectes
Photograph by Jose Hevia. The project proposes a system of interconnecting rooms in a staggered fashion
inserted between the main load-bearing and interlocking walls so that the structure shapes the space
The system does not distinguish between the aggregation and the housing units but values the room as a spatial and project unit
Each 4mx3m module consists of 12 m2 of surface
regardless of use.The units consist of between four and six modules
responding to a social housing program of one
are made of larch wood that contrasts with the rawness of the earth
The arrangement of the kitchen-dining room in the center of the house
eliminates corridors and makes domestic work visible
so that the living room gives space to the rest of the rooms until it equalizes them
eliminating the hegemony of the living room
to optimize the plan and obtain its maximum performance. In order to reduce energy demand
there is a roof over the patio that works as an atrium in winter and as a solar chimney in summer
the building becomes compact and captures heat through the galleries and atriums and is sheltered with a cork ETICS to avoid thermal bridges and infiltrations
The inertia allows us to keep the heat during the night
in summer the atrium is opened and the solar protections are deployed to increase the form factor of the building
allowing it to dissipate heat and increasing the speed of the air to improve the thermal sensation and comfort.Social Housing in Ibiza by Peris+Toral Arquitectes
Photograph by Jose Hevia. The atrium is not only an environmental sustainability strategy
as it brings together circulations and community spaces to foster the social relations that build the community
An access passage that connects the three lobbies articulates the gradient of intermediate spaces between the street and the community patios. The use of the same materials
both in the home and in the community spaces
the building has a wide spectrum of intermediate spaces

In response to both the temporality of the facility and the context where is located
Peris+Toral stands up for a detachable and reusable construction that minimizes the trace on the territory: a scaffolding system as structure and formal solution of the project.
This temporary facility built a year ago by the Catalan practice Peris+Toral, is part of the provisional urbanization of the Glòries Square in Barcelona. With this project, the studio reasserts a new way of working and enhances its search for new solutions and constructive processes.

whereas wood on the pavement and on the transverse thresholds provide warmer areas in the facility.
Australians have been appalled by a racist slur scrawled on a Qantas magazine and left in a plane seat pocket.
Indigenous Olympian and former Federal senator Nova Peris has shared a photo of the magazine taken by her husband Scott Appleton when he flew from Alice Springs to Darwin on Tuesday.
The magazine was in the seat pocket in front of the elderly lady next to Mr Appleton and appeared to be a spiteful reaction to the Welcome to Country broadcast by the airline before each landing.
The message said that 'no one respects' Indigenous people, labelling them as 'lazy' using a racist slur.
'Stop the stupid respect to Elders bulls***,' the second line read.
'Here's to hoping Qantas tell their cleaning contractors to remove Qantas books from planes with racist messages written on them,' Ms Peris wrote.
Those commenting also expressed their dismay.
'Dreadful, ignorant racist statement, the magazine should have definitely been seen & removed by staff,' one person wrote.
'Cleaning staff need to be more vigilant but also people need to show respect for others,' commented another.
