the brief challenged the architect to develop a building in connection with the existing complex
providing the much needed extra bedrooms while ensuring the well-being of the patients as a priority
the resulting program includes ten double rooms and four individual rooms
all equipped with private facilities.

the design by the architect results in a program that utilizes the minimum space for the required functions in order to fit within the area of land available and maintain a connection to the existing building
the concept is based on this principal and aims to provide a very user-focused experience
the volume dematerializes itself through the projection of rooms outward
distorting the main façade and forming a special sculptural moment that creates an eye-catching landmark for the town
the internal rooms aim to capture as much of the outdoor landscape as possible
the protrusions on the façade are designed to large dimensions (3.5/4.5m) in order to bring in vast amounts of daylight
the resulting geometry of the design therefore defines the image of the building
the scale also aims to establish a relationship with the surrounding trees and create a distinction within the urban landscape
the concept by nuno piedade alexandre results in a functional program that prioritises the needs of the users

Students said many things about how the distinct
coastal Malibu and greater Los Angeles culture came as a shock in contrast to the communities they were raised in
Students said they chose to study at Pepperdine to break out of their hometown bubbles
meet new people with different backgrounds and grow as a person
“I wanted to get myself out of the Dubai bubble — the happy
safe bubble,” sophomore Jason Piedade said
it didn’t represent the rest of the world and I wanted to expose myself to grow.”
L.A. was not at all what Piedade expected it to be. He said he was raised watching YouTubers, rom-coms and movies like “La La Land,” so he built up a romanticized idea of the city
“As I drove by the Warner Bros. Studio
I found myself absolutely shocked that movies were filmed in buildings like that,” Piedade said
“It took away the magic a bit.”
Piedade said people in Dubai seem to take their safety for granted
He said there is more censorship in Dubai than in the United States
but there is more safety at night in Dubai
there is a give-and-take between safety and freedom
my mom wasn’t worried if I left the house at the middle of the night and was walking the streets at 4 a.m.,” Piedade said
Piedade noticed the politics are different
He said Americans seem to have more entitlement when it comes to their ideas about how the country should be run
“People in Dubai are a lot more confident in their leaders,” Piedade said
“They have no real complaints to give about how the country is run.”
was the kindness in small-talk interactions
Piedade said he was shocked at how willing people are to spark conversation
One of Piedade’s first interactions at Pepperdine was in line at the on-campus Starbucks
A woman behind him was so excited to start a conversation about how they share the same drink order of a caramel macchiato
“Americans are a lot more small-talky,” Piedade said
“No one cares in Dubai and go about their day with tunnel vision.”
Piedade said he has grown in confidence since coming to Pepperdine
He loves that Americans are so in touch with people’s emotions and seem to genuinely care about how those around them are feeling
He said being in the United States pushed him to develop his emotional side as a man
also said her experiences thus far on the mainland pushed her to grow in many ways
Wade described how Hawai’i is a melting pot of different languages
including a form of English called “Pidgin.” Pidgin is the same as English
but more culturally based with certain slang terms
Wade said the warm hospitality in Hawai’i is pivotal to its culture
She described how there are people to welcome you immediately with a fresh Hawaiian lei and warmth as you step off the plane at the airport in Hawai’i
She said Hawai’i operates as more of a collectivist society
She noticed how people on the mainland are helpful and caring toward one another
Wade described some stand-out differences between the Hawaiian island and the mainland
Hawai’i has many deeply rooted Asian influences that make up the Hawaiian culture
Wade found it shocking that people on the mainland leave their shoes on in the house
Wade additionally found it a culture shock that people in L.A
call those of authority by their first names
but it’s culturally expected to speak to those of authority as if they are above you at all times
she calls them “Auntie X” instead of simply calling them by their first name
Sophomore Niccie Jamitkowski also noticed some substantial cultural differences between the west coast and the east coast where she is from
Jamitkowski said she loves the old, colonial buildings in her hometown of North Andover, Massachusetts. She said she misses the cozy, “Gilmore Girls“ vibe
“It’s nice to have a fall day inside with a warm drink in hand,” Jamitkowski said
“It’s technically colder there
The accents are polar opposites and the rough
She described the California accent as being rough in a completely different way
Jamitkowski also noticed some other differences between her hometown of North Andover and L.A.
She noticed there is much more excitement and things to do in L.A.
She also said one is less prone to seasonal depression when the seasons change because it is mostly sunny in L.A.
“I did not expect the overall good vibes here and high spirits,” Jamitkowski said
as an idealized place with many influencers and celebrities
Wade and Jamitkowski each said they are glad they came to Pepperdine
“I met so many people different than myself,” Wade said
“I grew way more as a person over the last two years than I would have if I stayed in the island bubble of Hawai’i.”

“We earn very little to pay that for a machine”
one of the 30 workers who crossed the state in May last year
travelling over 700 kilometres from the Jequitinhonha Valley in the north of Minas Gerais
to work for four months on the Piedade Farm
To the report, Starbucks said it was “deeply concerned to learn of the allegations of labour violations or poor working conditions” at Piedade Farm and that it plans to investigate the situations mentioned by the report. Read the company’s full position here
Repórter Brasil also tried to contact the producer by phone and email
but had not heard back as of writing this article
The space remains open for future manifestations
after an inspection by Ministry of Labour inspectors on the property
in which the public servants warned that the practice was illegal
The farm managers then suggested to the seasonal workers that they pay for the machinery to the contractor
the person responsible for recruiting the group in the north of the state
but took his own derriçadeira for the crop
the amount of R$ 50 paid by the property seems little to Antônio*
given the expenses that a worker may have with the equipment
we are the ones who must pay for maintenance
These R$ 200 [the sum of the rent for the four months] are not even enough to repair the machine when it breaks down
“The accommodation was messy and the bathroom was all in shambles
with no flooring or even a tile on the wall”
resigned: “But inside the sun doesn’t burn and the rain doesn’t drip on us”
*Names changed to preserve the anonymity of the workers

The Church in Piedade village in Divar, on a hill is dedicated to Our Lady of Piety, or Nossa Senhora da Piedade Igreja em Divar, Goa in Portuguese. It has a Catholic population of around 1,500, who celebrate the feast of the patron on the third Sunday of October, which this year falls on 15 October.
The first chapel was constructed on top of the Divar hill, between the villages of Goltim and Navelim in December 1515 and it was dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Divar and since there was no Church in this village, this chapel was considered to be one. At present, the cemetery exists here.
Gaspar Correira, in the book, Lendas da India, Vol. II, pg 108, says that after finishing the battle in Persia, Alfonso de Albuquerque proceeded to Goa since he had a great desire to see the Church dedicated to Our Lady of Piety in Divar. He further adds that Alfonso prayed the whole day during this journey, and seeing the Church of Divar, he returned to the cabin…... and passed away on December 27, 1515.
Others say that the first chapel was constructed in 1541 by Rui de Silveira, a native of Evora and captain of the sea of Narve. This information is given on a stone, which is now below the middle door of Narve Church.
The Chapel was expanded in 1625 and raised to the statues of the Church by archbishop D. Frei Sebatiao De S. Pedro (1625-1629).
The construction of the present Church began in 1700 and it was completed in 1724. Its architect was Fr (Msgr) Antonio Joao de Frias from San Ana Telaulim, Vicar of Piedade, who died in 1727 at his native place. The two Communidades Fabriqueiras, namely Goltim and Navelim, helped financially to construct the church. The missionaries who brought the Catholic faith to this island were the Jesuits.
The Church has three main entrances, one in front and the other two on the sides. It has twin towers with spear finials. Its architecture is New Roman with Baroque features. The columns in the Church are Corinthian. To the left of the main entrance is a staircase that leads to the choir loft and to the right is a huge Baptismal Font that looks to be constructed of one single stone. It has a huge pulpit and in it is the image of the patron.
In front of the Church are two statues on pedestals, one that of Fr Jacome Gonsalves and the other of St Jose Vas.
The parishioners celebrate the feast with deep fervour on the third Sunday of October, which is preceded by the Maddi and the nine-day thematic Novena. During the Novena days, a statue of the patron is kept in the church, which the faithful venerate and on the feast day it is taken in procession.

Surrounded by the River Mandovi and blessed with lush green fields
the scantily populated island of Divar is a popular hotspot for visiting tourists
but it's the centre of attraction for the entire state of Goa during the harvest season when the annual festival of flags ‘Bonderam' (Bandeira in Portuguese
means flag) is celebrated with enthusiasm in the moth of August
While the first one is celebrated at Sao Matias village
the second one is celebrated at Piedade village on the fourth Saturday of August and is followed by the harvest feast on the following Sunday
the Piedade Youth Association has been celebrating Bonderam for over three decades and this is the 34th year that this festival of flags will be celebrated at Piedade village
while the Bonderam celebrations will be held on September 9 this year
the church associated harvest feast which marks the ripening of the crop
has already been celebrated on August 27 as usual," informs Beato D'mello
current president of Piedade Youth Association
"This year because of Ganesh Chaturthi falling in the same week
we had preponed the celebration from August 26 to August 19
But again because of the code of conduct imposed due to assembly-by polls we had to postpone it to September," says Freddy Ferrao from Romantic ward
The church ritual involves taking out a flag march carrying the statue of baby Jesus and the patron saint in a procession to the field where the parish priest cuts the corn while the locals take the corn and keep it near the altar in the church
Mass is then offered and home grown fruits are distributed
The parish priest sprinkles holy water on the vehicles
The locals meet and greet while the brass band plays
The Bonderam festival is a fun filled festival that needs no invitation for the visitors outside the village and the locals participate wholeheartedly wearing vibrant
colourful attires and displaying their talents through various competitions
food and competitions are a part of any village festival in Goa and Bonderam is not an exception to this unwritten rule
we do have mock fights among our six wards during Bonderam but no weapons are used
Everything is just a fun-filled activity which all of us enjoy thoroughly," smiles U D Aleixinho Monserrate
A central government employee and the past president (1989-90) of the Piedade Youth Association
the spirit and the fervour of the festival celebrations remains untouched with no traces of enmity
Frozen in time frame is the history which now the islanders remember in a fond manner
Known as the favourite festival of the year Bonderam gives Divarkars a platform to exhibit their talents
The flags now are not signs of battles but symbols of peace." "Last year the association tried to adopt technology and introduced live screening on a LED screen so that the celebrations could be better viewed
where the celebration takes place is small and the audience could not get a glimpse of the events
Our current president Beato has taken extra efforts to make it possible
He has also linked this screen to our Facebook page wherein Goans sitting in UK and Dubai can also watch Bonderam live," adds Freddy
"Early morning a wake-up call is given at 5.30 am just like a public announcement to remind the people to get ready for the grand feast of Bonderam which begins at midday with a flag march with brass band
followed by a fancy dress parade and traditional float parade
There is tough competition and each ward tries to win by displaying the best of their talent in choosing the theme of the float
These are non-commercial floats that display competitive spirit and winning is tough
song and dance is all over the place until 10 pm
the donation coup lottery draws are announced marking the end of the day long fest
Apart from the islanders there is equal crowd from across Goa gathered to watch the gala festival sponsored by the State Bank of India and others
