SFR catches up with actor coming home to take the stage
3 Questions with KHFM DJ/musician/music educator Kathlene Ritch
3 Questions with artist Karen Clarkson
they’ve called Seattle home since 2009—and it has been 18 long years since they’ve performed in town
O’Connell will play The Narrator in a Santa Fe Playhouse production of the one-performer show Every Brilliant Thing by playwright Duncan Macmillan (with Jonny Donahoe)
sets out to list every awesome thing he can
a whole mess-load of audience participation
the show is poised to be something special (see santafeplayhouse.org for preview and official run info and pricing)
We caught up with O’Connell to learn a little more
This interview has been edited for clarity and concision
Can you give us any spoiler-free info about the nature of the show
but those people don’t know who they are until they come to see it
It’s about audience participation—always with consent; they play other characters
There’s quite a bit of participation which
Just know that you may or may not be participating
most of it is me talking and the audience is my other scene partner
I want to respect what the playwright and director put together
If I’m in an ensemble piece it’s important not to just throw shit at people
The reason I like doing theater more than film is that the way you wake up is different every day and there’s that
plus the energy in the room and whatever the audience brings
I will say that I don’t think people will see the same show twice
This is the second one-person piece I’ve done
What made this the right time/right role for your return to a Santa Fe stage after so long
I've always wanted to come back to performing in Santa Fe
there was really only the children’s theater stuff that existed other than one-offs
But the reason I’m an actor is I grew up here and met [Pandemonium Productions founder] Chris Leslie
Every Brilliant Thing is about a person who makes a list of brilliant things after their mother tries to commit suicide
One of the reasons it was so important to come home and do it here is that one of my best friends
and that was a person I had a soul connection with
and because of what the show is about and Entheos
It felt like kismet or fate the way I got reached out to about the show
Does performing in a place where you first learned about theater and did your earliest work bear any emotional weight for you
I think it really does bear emotional weight
but this is the longest amount of time I’ve spent here since I moved in 2009
and I think emotional weight that I would have been less willing to process 10 years ago
I said to someone the other day that they call New Mexico the Land of Enchantment
and how annoying it is for them to be right
because it was boring and the only thing to do was get in trouble
because there is freedom within this show and improv a little bit; and the show is direct-address—as in
so I think the existence of that emotional weight will make its way into the show
It feels like any day we rehearse it…there have been spots where I’ve thought
I didn’t think that was going to come up.’ I think I’m trying to be willing to take time in the role without being indulgent
It’s important to embrace how you're feeling in a moment and not worry about adding 20 seconds to the show
I’m caring for the audience as they are caring for me
You have to figure out what your container is
But as long as you're pretty strict around your boundaries
I should be able to go though these emotional moments
take a few deep breaths and move on with my life
SFR Culture Editor Alex De Vore has written about the Santa Fe culture scene for over a decade and won awards for doing so
He's pretty tired of Americana and still hopes new punk bands might happen

The former couple's lengthy divorce became official in 2013
but Pilar remains heavily involved in their kids' lives.
Since Shedeur's move to Boulder, Colo., Pilar often takes to social media posting about the Colorado Buffaloes. Now, Pilar will be cheering on a new team as Shedeur and Shilo begin their NFL journey.
Back on Feb. 8, Pilar took to social media to give Shedeur a birthday shoutout. Pilar also included photos from what appeared to be a recent hike with the star quarterback.
"23 years ago Today I brought a Legendary Soul into this earthly realm!" Pilar noted on Instagram.

"@shedeursanders Happy Birthday
I love you beyond life and will always choose you and our pack across time
dimensions and space!" Pilar continued
Pilar was also at Shedeur's recent jersey retirement ceremony at Colorado
Shedeur's mom reflected on an "amazing" two years in Boulder.
"Taking this one last drive in to retire my son’s jersey number #2 what an honor and a privilege to have spent two years in Boulder, Colorado with them, it’s been amazing and to see these sites everyday nothing short of Fun, Gratitude and High Vibes!" Pilar said in an Instagram post on Sunday.
During an Oct. 2012 interview with The Wall Street Journal
Deion reflected on the divorce and the drama playing out in front of a national audience.
"I feel like I made some great decisions and timely decisions
and decisions not just based on myself but my kids
and my school," Coach Prime said at the time.
Pilar recently showed Shilo some love for running a 4.45-second 40-yard dash ahead of the NFL draft.
"GO SHILO!" Pilar remarked in an April 5 Instagram post. "@shilosanders 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽WHO DIDN’T BELIEVE
Silly 🐇🐇 where did that even start?!😂🤣"
More recently, Deion and former fiancee Tracey Edmonds announced their mutual breakup in Dec

An incident marked by a shocking display of disrespect has once again thrust family loyalty into the spotlight
as one woman’s relentless defense of her kin reaffirms the unbreakable bonds that transcend every game
a resilient figure has exemplified the tenacity required to uphold her family’s honor in an arena that sometimes prioritizes favoritism over fairness
Known for her unwavering readiness to speak out
she has consistently challenged systems that overlook merit and integrity
With a courage reminiscent of a seasoned warrior
she has defended her children not only from overt acts of discourtesy but also from the quieter
systemic prejudices that permeate the competitive landscape
The recent display of disregard during an encounter has stirred memories of past battles fought not on the field
Witnessing an incident where respect was notably absent
her reaction encapsulated a deep-seated commitment to defending the dignity of those she holds dear
“We must stand up when such disrespect undermines the values we cherish,” she declared passionately
a sentiment that resonates with many who believe in fairness over favoritism
involving a prominent figure’s unexpected conduct
igniting discussions about accountability and respect in competitive sports
strikes a broader chord within the athletic community
The intricate dynamics within a family intertwined with national sports narratives highlight that the relationships off the field can be as pivotal as any game-winning play
The incident raises questions about the inherent responsibilities of public figures and the repercussions when they stray from the principles they once embodied
It is a reminder that respect is not merely an expectation
but a fundamental requirement in any association
whether on the gridiron or within the hallowed halls of family life
Reflecting on Integrity and Future Possibilities
it invites reflection on the essential nature of respect and the impact of personal conduct within the sports realm
The enduring stance of a devoted defender against perceived injustice provides a powerful lesson in integrity and accountability
It is a call to all who hold positions of influence to consider that their actions
whether as role models on the field or as members of a family
carry the weight of inspiring future generations
This moment of reckoning serves not merely as a confrontation to overcome
but as an opportunity to renew a commitment to honor
and the preservation of dignity in every facet of life

an acclaimed Utah painter who captured life in vibrant colors and inspired generations of artists as a mentor and friend
Pobil died Wednesday, according to Kathryn Lindquist, vice president of the Pilar Pobil Legacy Foundation
the Salt Lake City arts nonprofit named for her
the world opened up for me,” Pobil told The Salt Lake Tribune in 1994

Pobil drew inspiration for her paintings from life around her in Salt Lake City — including people she knew or shoppers she saw at the Downtown Farmers Market in Pioneer Park
The women she captured in paintings and sculpture show
“I feel that I know personally each of the people who appear in my works,” Pobil told Tribune art critic George Dibble in 1986
“The children who trip lightly down the path
the person quietly reading a book with calm relaxation
the neighbors who talk across the back fence — each are known to me.”
where she had a seaside second home for 30 years
“A lot comes from Spain and a lot comes from Mexico,” Pobil told The Tribune in a 2000 interview
[The people] are wonderful in the way they have no inhibitions
A self-taught artist, Pobil painted in watercolor, oils and acrylics — sometimes taking the paint past the canvas and onto the frames. At times, she painted on shoes, boots, furniture, doors and parts of houses. She sculpted clay on wood, and sewed and embroidered fabric. She wrote a memoir, “My Kitchen Table: Sketches From My Life,” in 2007 in which she collected her stories and 50 of her paintings
Pobil has opened her home in Salt Lake City’s Avenues neighborhood to schoolchildren
She has also mentored aspiring professional artists
Linford) Pilar Pobil said that her work "French Curves" is a study in humor
“Art in Pilar’s Garden,” to allow nonartists to meet artists in a more accessible setting than an art gallery
Some 300 people now attend the event over a weekend in June
“I hope [people] come to admire art in an atmosphere of spring beauty
of generosity of spirit and love for what makes life worth living,” Pobil said in 2021
The Pilar Pobil Legacy Foundation was launched to continue the garden event, and “celebrate my Spanish heritage by nurturing artists of Latino and Hispanic descent, among others,” she wrote on the foundation’s website
Among the foundation’s programs is the Pilar Pobil Humanities Scholarship
an endowed annual scholarship given to a student transferring from Salt Lake Community College to the Department of Writing and Rhetoric Studies at the University of Utah’s College of Humanities
women who are immigrants — first-generation college students who hold down jobs to support their families and don’t qualify for typical scholarships
In a Facebook post Wednesday
former Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski wrote
“It is so heartbreaking to lose this bright light in my life
her stories and her excitement over her latest creation.”

was assassinated near the beginning of the Spanish Civil War
“I always had a pencil and paper in my hands,” Pobil told The Tribune in 2000
Our future was in the home or the convent.”
In 1956, she married Walter Smith, and the couple moved to Salt Lake City, where he was born and grew up. They had three children and were married for 43 years, until Smith’s death in 1999
by suggesting she take a pottery class at Salt Lake City’s Art Barn
She then bought her own clay and started sculpting on their kitchen table

Deion won’t be able to make a run for it
you’re not going to be able to run dog,” Shedeur joked on a recent episode of We Got Time Today
“You got that right… I prayed about it
and I’m making a sacrifice for you and you.”

Family Night — At Coach Prime’s House
Instead of an impersonal draft party or corporate event
the Sanders brothers are keeping it close to home — literally
The draft festivities will be held at Deion’s house
meaning both parents will be front and center
especially considering their last high-profile run-in ended with Deion sprinting away from Pilar at a Colorado game
A Rare Moment of Unity for Shilo and Shedeur
Despite years of public fallout between their parents, the brothers are creating space for a united celebration. “We wanted both of our parents there to celebrate with us,” Shilo said, adding a comedic twist: “So ours are on different days.” Laughter followed, but the message was clear — the moment matters. Shedeur, a projected top QB for the 2025 NFL Draft
From Headlines to Healing — A New Chapter
Deion and Pilar’s divorce was anything but quiet
marked by a $2.2 million defamation suit and years of public friction
But if there’s one thing this weekend symbolizes
it’s the power of showing up — even when it’s uncomfortable
It’s a potential turning point not just for Shilo and Shedeur’s careers
This weekend isn’t just about football
It’s about showing up — no matter the history
it’s a front-row seat to the most unpredictable reunion in sports
Our weekly email is chockful of interesting and relevant insights into Jewish history
2009 at the Conference in the Global forum for Combating Anti-Semitism in Jerusalem
Pilar Rahola is a Spanish Catalan journalist
and former politician and Member of Parliament
A meeting in Barcelona with a hundred lawyers and judges a month ago
They have come together to hear my opinions on the Middle-Eastern conflict
in the shipwreck of “single thinking” regarding Israel
does she risk losing her credibility by defending the bad guys
I answer provocatively – You all believe that you are experts in international politics when you talk about Israel
Would you dare talk about the conflict in Rwanda
are ready to believe that Jews have six arms
Because Israel is permanently under the media magnifying glass and the distorted image pollutes the world’s brains
And because it is part of what is politically correct
are ready to believe that Jews have six arms
in the same way that during the Middle Ages people believed all sorts of outrageous things
The problem that those of us who do not demonize Israel have
is that there exists no debate on the conflict
All that exists is the banner; there’s no exchange of ideas
We throw slogans at each other; we don’t have serious information
we suffer from the “burger journalism” syndrome
Intellectual thinkers and international journalists have given up on Israel
when someone tries to go beyond the “single thought” of criticizing Israel
I’ve been trying to answer this question for years: why
Why is a tiny country which struggles to survive criminalized
Why does manipulated information triumph so easily
reduced to a simple mass of murderous imperialists
why when Israel is the only country in the World which is threatened with extinction
it is also the only one that nobody considers a victim
I don’t believe that there is a single answer to these questions
Just as it is impossible to completely explain the historical evil of anti-Semitism
it is also not possible to totally explain the present-day imbecility of anti-Israelism
Both drink from the fountain of intolerance and lies
if we accept that anti-Israelism is the new form of anti-Semitism
we conclude that circumstances may have changed
both of the Medieval Christian anti-Semitism and of the modern political anti-Semitism
Those myths are part of the chronicle of Israel
the Medieval Jew accused of killing Christian children to drink their blood connects directly with the Israeli Jew who kills Palestinian children to steal their land
Always they are innocent children and dark Jews
the Jewish bankers who wanted to dominate the world through the European banks
connect directly with the idea that the Wall Street Jews want to dominate the World through the White House
all that which has created the historical hatred against the Jews
which produces an efficient cultural medium
Why does a renewed intolerance surge with such virulence
this has historical and geopolitical motives
the West’s energy dependency and the growing Islamist phenomenon
But it also emerges from a set of defeats which we suffer as free societies
the left raised the flag of freedom wherever there was injustice
It was the depositary of the utopian hopes of society
Despite the murderous evil of Stalinism’s sinking these utopias
the left has preserved intact its aura of struggle
and still pretends to point out good and evil in the world
Even those who would never vote for leftist options
grant great prestige to leftist intellectuals
and allow them to be the ones who monopolize the concept of solidarity
those who struggled against Pinochet were freedom-fighters
are expelled from the heroes’ paradise
This historic treason to freedom is reproduced nowadays
the leaders of Hezbollah are considered resistance heroes
while pacifists like the Israeli singer Noa
the left is hawking totalitarian ideologies
ignores the destruction of fundamental rights
but falls in love with imams; shouts against the Israeli Defense Forces
but applauds Hamas’s terrorists; weeps for the Palestinian victims
and when it is touched by Palestinian children
it does it only if it can blame the Israelis
It will never denounce the culture of hatred
at the AIPAC conference in Washington I asked the following questions:
Why don’t we see demonstrations in Europe against the Islamic dictatorships
Why are there no demonstrations against the enslavement of millions of Muslim women
Why are there no declarations against the use of bomb-carrying children in the conflicts in which Islam is involved
Why is the left only obsessed with fighting against two of the most solid democracies of the planet
those which have suffered the bloodiest terrorist attacks
And the greatest prejudice of all is the one aimed against Israel
in a formal manner that the main responsibility for the new anti-Semitic hatred disguised as anti-Zionism
comes from those who should have been there to defend freedom
forget their victims and remain silent before medieval ideologies which aim at the destruction of free societies
The treason of the left is an authentic treason against modernity
Israel is the world’s most watched place
it is the world’s least understood place
We have more information in the world than ever before
but we do not have a better informed world
the information superhighway connects us anywhere in the planet
but it does not connect us with the truth
Today’s journalists do not need maps
devoured by that “fast food” journalism which offers hamburger news
to readers who want fast-food information
it is the world’s least understood place
Of course one must keep in mind the pressure of the great petrodollar lobbies
whose influence upon journalism is subtle but deep
Mass media knows that if it speaks against Israel
But what would happen if it criticized an Islamic country
Certainly part of the press that writes against Israel
would see themselves mirrored in Mark Twain’s ironical sentence: “Get your facts first
then you can distort them as you please.”
To all this one must add the ethical relativism which defines the present times: it is based not on denying the values of civilization
I explain it with this little tale: If I were lost in an uncharted island
and would want to found a democratic society
I would only need three written documents: The Ten Commandments (which established the first code of modernity
"Thou shalt not murder" founded modern civilization.); The Roman Penal Code; and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
And with these three texts we would start again
even by those who claim to be defending them
“Hurray for Freedom of Speech!”...
several Spanish left-wing organizations tried to take me to court
because I deny the “Palestinian Holocaust”
They were attempting to prohibit me from writing articles and to send me to prison
The social critical mass has lost weight and
at the same time ideological dogmatism has gained weight
the strong values of modernity have been substituted by a “weak thinking,” vulnerable to manipulation and Manichaeism
a sound defeat of the international organizations which should protect Human Rights
Instead they have become broken puppets in the hands of despots
The United Nations is only useful to Islamofascists like Ahmadinejad
or dangerous demagogues like Hugo Chavez which offers them a planetary loudspeaker where they can spit their hatred
Tolerant and cultural Islam suffers today the violent attack of a totalitarian virus which tries to stop its ethical development
This virus uses the name of God to perpetrate the most terrible horrors: lapidate women
Let’s not forget: They kill us with cellular phones connected to the Middle Ages
Islamic fundamentalism is destroying Islam
Perhaps Islamic anti-Semitism is the most serious intolerant phenomenon of our times; indeed
it contaminates more than 1,400 million people
The Jews are the thermometer of the world’s health
Whenever the world has had totalitarian fever
orphan and abandoned by serious journalism
Israel suffers the paradigm of the 21st Century: the lack of a solid commitment with the values of liberty
the metaphor of a concept of civilization which suffers today attacks on all flanks
The Jews are the thermometer of the world’s health
Whenever the world has had totalitarian fever
the first enemy of totalitarianism has been the Jew
in these times of energy dependency and social uncertainty
That is why the anti-Semitism of the 21st Century has dressed itself with the efficient disguise of anti-Israelism
But all present-day anti-Semitism has turned into prejudice and the demonization of the Jewish State
Benjamin Franklin said: “Where liberty is
there is my country.” And Albert Einstein added: “The World is a dangerous place
Not because of the people who are evil; but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.” This is the double commitment
here and now; never remain inactive in front of evil in action and defend the countries of liberty

We focus on the greatest sustainability challenges across all sectors
Offering unparalleled depth and breadth of expertise
But I don’t think many people get to make the same kind of impact on people’s lives for the future
I spend my days working to understand how our clients’ projects can make a positive difference for people
to ease daily struggles or boost potential opportunities
We get to visit the remote parts of world that tourists don’t see – exploring different cultures
few people get to see how the work we do at our desks touches people in their communities
the people I’ve met have been wonderful
on site visits – everyone has been great
I always feel we can lean on and learn from each other in our department – everyone’s ready to help each other
And I don’t think we’re the only one who would point that out: that’s the kind of company ERM is
Consultancy is sometimes thought of as ultra-competitive
But that’s not what I found when I joined the Iberia Capital Project Development team
My colleagues were quick to help me learn – even when it meant giving up their own time
they even amended the budget to allow me more time on site and more on-the-job experience
Then the project leader spent hours and hours coaching me through how to write the required report
that piece of work made my name as a French-speaking social consultant – it set me on the path
even though I’m a Senior Consultant with even more responsibilities
While there are times that work comes first – especially if I’m working on site in Africa – I still train three times a week and play every weekend
It’s not only a great stress-reliever but also teaches us about perseverance
All valuable when you have a demanding job like mine
Being part of this company means having the opportunity to change the world – even if only a little.
Diekman was a non-roster invitee but Pilar was a Rule 5 draftee
The Atlanta Braves continued to clarify their relief pitching situation by making a couple of moves here on Wednesday afternoon
it was reported that the Braves had released reliever Jake Diekman
making him a free agent once again after they brought him to spring training as a non-roster invitee
Our own Stephen Tolbert noticed it on MLB.com’s transaction log
The Braves have released RP Jake Diekman according to their transactions page
Diekman had a rough 2024 season with the New York Mets
where he finished the year with a 5.63 ERA
a 5.11 FIP and -0.8 fWAR over the course of 32 innings pitched for them
He ran into some issues over the seven appearances he made in spring training for the Braves but it still seemed like he had a decent shot to stick around since he was a left-handed reliever
Apparently that (and some spotty command) wasn’t enough to keep him around and now the Braves have decided to give him a chance to latch on elsewhere
the Braves sent one of their Rule 5 Draft selections back to their original team
The Braves took Anderson Pilar during the draft this past winter with the idea of potentially giving him a shot to slide into the bullpen
as the Braves decided that they wouldn’t be carrying him on their active roster and have returned him to the Marlins as a result
Jesse Rogers of ESPN was the first to report the news
That time of the spring when decisions on Rule 5 picks are made
The Braves are returning reliever Anderson Pilar to the Marlins
the writing was on the wall when the Braves sent him to Clearwater to start against a pretty-close-to-full strength Phillies lineup last week
Pilar found himself pulled from the game twice and it was apparent that he probably was not ready for The Show just yet
So now the Braves have made their decision and if they see him again
This is actually a pretty significant move since Pilar was on the active roster and that’s now a spot that has opened up for the Braves to fill
We’ll see how they chose to fill that spot in their roster but for now
we have two more players who won’t be coming with the Braves once Opening Day rolls around

The Braves are returning Rule 5 pick Anderson Pilar to the Marlins, reports Jesse Rogers of ESPN
Neither club has made an official announcement related to Pilar
Atlanta’s 40-man roster count will drop from 39 to 38
Rule 5 picks have to be put on waivers before being returned to their original club
It’s unclear if that has already taken place with Pilar
he won’t need to take up a 40-man spot with that organization
has spent most of his career in the Rockies organization but signed with the Marlins prior to 2024
He then had a good year across three levels
tossing 58 innings with a 2.64 earned run average
He struck out 30.6% of batters faced while issuing walks just 5.6% of the time and getting grounders at a 46.9% clip
That prompted Atlanta to grab him in the Rule 5
which allowed them to bring him into camp and get a close-up look at him
Pilar wasn’t able to make the most of the opportunity
he punched out 12 opponents but also issued six walks and ten hits
Players selected in the Rule 5 draft cannot be optioned to the minor leagues
a contending club like Atlanta can’t really afford to have him figure it out in meaningful games
Rule 5 players need to be put on waivers if the selecting club is relinquishing them
Any claiming club would need to operate under the same parameters
he will no longer have Rule 5 status and then he’ll be offered back to the Marlins
Atlanta started camp with two Rule 5 picks, the other being infielder Christian Cairo
which doesn’t bode well for his chances of sticking with Atlanta
Atlanta Braves Miami Marlins Rule 5 Draft Transactions Anderson Pilar
You just never know when you may have to return something
“Shop at Costco”…Why is Costco the only major food retailer in America that can make an EXCELLENT store branded pizza
Costco store made pizza tastes like pizzeria quality
whereas Safeway/Kroger store branded pizza tastes like cardboard
Does Costco have superior pizza technology
“Why is Costco the only major food retailer in America that can make an EXCELLENT store branded pizza?”
It’s not only great (and very filling
I’ll go to Costco just for a couple of slices and a soda and it’s under $5
to our store at least) chocolate chip cookie from the pizza window is awesome
We took one home and split it up into some ice cream
but only if I have enough will power that day
“Sam’s club has good cheap pizza.”
Liquidated their merchandise (I got some great deals) and now it’s a storage unit facility
I was blown away when it happened because it was always so busy
First they axed the polish dogs from the $1.50 deal
Then they axed the combination topping pizza
was excellent and they’d even make minus certain toppings on request
Sam’s club around here has pretty bad pizza
the team that Drafts a player offers 100K to the team they Drafted from
(if the player clears waivers) the OG team can get them back if they offer 50K to Drafter
My question: how long has it been since the $$ amount has been moved/adjusted
Has the cost of Rule 5’s picks come down in price because it hasn’t been adjusted?
“Come down in price”…I’m not an internet research guy
but I thought the $100K price was $50K just over/under a decade ago
the relative cost of a Rule 5 pick is effectively nothing
it cost an amount of money teams would notice spending
the success rate of Rule 5 picks is so low that they’re probably priced appropriately
If replacement player quality continues to climb
When you are returning a rule 5 player to the Marlins your scouting guys have hit rock bottom
Marlins literally posted an open walkon tryouts on LinkedIn for anyone wanting to join their minor leagues
This org is an absolutely disaster and Peter Bendix doesn’t have any of the decision making savvy that other Ivy League GMs of his caliber have
It was for a practice squad at $150/day (lol)
which I believe violates MiLB wages that were agreed to in CBA
They deserve ALL the trolling for being cheap for this one
I participated in the phillies tryout about 15-20 years ago
really only done in NFL (where there’s no minor leagues)
My bad…reread….paid practice squads are illegal
Atlanta—who’s got a knack for fixing pitchers—could’ve faked a small injury
put him on the injured list (teams do this all the time)
and sent him to the minors to get better without breaking Rule 5 rules
If no one claimed him (and they probably wouldn’t after his spring)
they’d keep a guy who cost them just $50K—a tiny price for a possible star
they could coach him up and either use him in 2026 or trade him for something big
The 2024 Rule 5 selected pitcher Molina stuck through the season with the Rockies
even though Mgr Bud Black threw him into a slugfest game 1 which sky-rocketed his ERA
I know it isn’t much money to go grab a rule 5 draft but this was a waste of money

#article-stream-0 .subhead4-embed .text-align{text-align: left;}"If something scares us
but in a good way and gets you a little bit of a pit in your stomach
that's going to be something we want to try and tackle," says Pilar Savone
Executive Vice President of Production and Development at Simpson Street
the production company has become a force in the entertainment industry by tackling complex social issues and championing narratives that mainstream studios often sidestep
from the legal drama Reasonable Doubt to the Broadway adaptation American Son
demonstrates what Savone calls "creative courage" - an approach that transforms industry constraints into bold
meaningful storytelling that gives voice to underrepresented experiences
Now the belts have tightened and they want to be in business with tried-and-true showrunners
Simpson Street's response has been to build a network of strategic partnerships who share its belief in storytelling as a force for cultural change
"This business is really solely about relationships," Savone emphasizes
to be in business with these people and to feel safe with each other." This philosophy has fostered collaborations with the likes of Hello Sunshine
Reese Witherspoon's production company
creating an ecosystem that supports stories the industry often overlooks – but audiences now seek out
The power of this approach became clear with UnPrisoned
The show follows a therapist whose father returns home after 17 years in prison
exploring themes of family and forgiveness against the backdrop of America's criminal justice system
Savone witnessed something striking: "There were four out of five of the people that were interviewing the cast who all had family members that were incarcerated." The moment underscored Simpson Street's belief that deeply personal stories aren’t just relatable—they reflect lived experiences that audiences are eager to see on screen
Simpson Street brought together a dynamic creative team that included veteran producer Larry Wilmore and Raamla Mohamed
who made her debut as a creator and showrunner
The collaboration balanced experience with fresh perspectives
earning critical acclaim and reinforcing Simpson Street’s commitment to developing talent while telling complex
it comes down to “putting all the pieces together.”
This instinct for recognizing and developing compelling stories comes from Savone's own journey through Hollywood
"I started out in the business as a PA on set
and then I spent 13 years with Quentin Tarantino
During her tenure producing films like "Django Unchained," where she first collaborated with Washington
she learned how to navigate Hollywood’s complex power structures while championing bold
Savone is clear-eyed about the industry's current realities
"Success right now is having something on the air
Success right now is being in production," she notes
But she measures achievement beyond traditional metrics: "Success is people still wanting to come and be in business with us
Success is people coming and bringing us a book or bringing us a script." For Savone
"power is in communication and accountability." While other studios chase familiar formulas
Simpson Street continues to prove there's an audience hungry for narratives that challenge norms

2024 6:27 AM ESTEnsuring that the United States’ largest private company
operating in over 70 countries with more than 160,000 personnel
meets its sustainability goals is a challenge
But Pilar Cruz has proven she is the right person for the job at food and beverage multinational Cargill since her role as chief sustainability officer was created in 2021
Cruz says her quest for sustainability stems from witnessing the violence in 1980s Colombia
where she earned appreciation for eliminating waste and guaranteeing food security
“I always had that desire to pursue a career that would allow me to do good for other people while at the same time protecting the planet,” she says.
But Cruz asserts that it’s not her job alone. “Sustainability is everybody’s role,” she says, and dispels notions that big business and environmental protection can’t marry. “I think it’s possible to do good by doing great.”

the reaction area at Chiquita Canyon Landfill has tripled in size and now threatens the release of hazardous leachate
Residents report debilitating symptoms including nausea
one so severe it led to ER hospitalization after the resident began bleeding from her eyes
Some families are taking refuge in their cars
sleeping with their family in parking lots farther from the landfill
The letter calls for a change in strategy beyond only monitoring air quality and tracking symptoms
and urges Governor Newsom to provide direct assistance to families being made sick by the burning landfill
while the ongoing lawsuit and regulatory proceedings move forward
families living near the Chiquita Canyon Landfill have endured toxic exposure from an underground fire that has recently tripled in size and that officials now expect to burn for decades,” said Assemblywoman Schiavo
“We cannot ask these families to wait for a lawsuit to play out while their kids breathe cancer-causing chemicals every single day
Some community members are so sick they have become unable to work
The landfill’s community relief program was abruptly terminated in February 2025
which already was barely covering the basics and did not include relocation or other key assistance
thousands of families may be forced to live with long-term toxic exposure and its life-altering consequences for decades
The letter urges the Governor to take the following actions to provide both short-term and long-term relief:
“Much like the Aliso Canyon disaster a decade ago
this situation demands an emergency response,” added Assemblywoman Schiavo
and scale of the public health threat are even greater now
and yet the response doesn’t match that urgency
The letter to the Governor is attached and can be read in full here
Assemblywoman Schiavo and the Los Angeles County Legislative Delegation sent a similar letter to the L.A
If appropriate steps are not taken by the County
the letter urges Governor Newsom to direct the California Department of Public Health to step in and provide the protections residents desperately need
Note: The above information was provided to KHTS by Schiavo’s office
