President Joe Biden joined United Auto Workers strikers on their picket line Tuesday as their work stoppage against major carmakers hit day 12

(AP) — President Joe Biden grabbed a bullhorn on the picket line Tuesday and urged striking auto workers to “stick with it” in an unparalleled show of support for organized labor by a modern president
Donning a union ballcap and exchanging fist bumps
Biden told United Auto Workers strikers that “you deserve the significant raise you need” as he stopped in the Detroit area just a day ahead of a planned visit by former President Donald Trump
the frontrunner for the Republican nomination in next year’s election
no wheels!” workers chanted as Biden arrived at a General Motors parts distribution warehouse
one of several facilities that has been targeted in a widening strike now in its 12th day
Despite concerns that a prolonged strike could undermine the economy
particularly in the crucial battleground state of Michigan
the Democratic president encouraged workers to keep fighting for better wages at a time when car companies have seen rising profits
one of their demands over the course of negotiations
I think they should be able to bargain for that.”
He’s repeatedly argued that auto companies have not gone far enough to meet union demands
especially after making concessions in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis
you saved the automobile industry back in 2008 ..
Now they’re doing incredibly well and guess what
FILE - United Auto Workers members and supporters picket outside a General Motors facility in Langhorne
The White House said Biden was the first modern president to visit a picket line
a sign of how far he’s willing to go to cultivate union support as he runs for reelection
Lawmakers often appear at strikes to show solidarity with unions
and Biden joined picket lines with casino workers in Las Vegas and auto workers in Kansas City while seeking the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination
who have to balance the rights of workers with disruptions to the economy
supply chains and other facets of everyday life
have stayed out of the strike fray — until Biden
Trump called Biden’s visit “nothing more than a PR stunt from Crooked Joe Biden to distract and gaslight the American people from his disastrous Bidenomics policies that have led to so much economic misery across the country.”
FILE - President Joe Biden pauses after answering a question about the auto workers strike as he speaks in the Roosevelt Room of the White House in Washington
The president spent less than half an hour at the Willow Run parts distribution warehouse
where he was joined by UAW President Shawn Fain
who rode with Biden in the presidential limousine to the picket line
for coming to stand up with us in our generation-defining moment,” said Fain
who described the union as engaged in a “kind of war” against “corporate greed.”
Labor historians said they could not recall an instance when a sitting president had joined an ongoing strike
even during the tenures of ardent pro-union presidents such as Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry Truman
Theodore Roosevelt invited labor leaders alongside mine operators to the White House amid a historic coal strike in 1902
a decision that was seen at the time as a rare embrace of unions as Roosevelt tried to resolve the dispute
Asked about that after landing in Michigan
Biden told reporters that “I’m not worried about that.”
Fain later said any endorsements would come later
“We’ve got to get good contracts first and we’ll work out those things down the road,” he said
At least one warehouse worker on the picket line was not swayed by the visit
but said it wouldn’t necessarily deter him from voting Republican in 2024
It should hopefully put some pressure on the company
The White House is behind us” Cranford said
he said he and many union members disagree with Democrats on securing the borders
And he said both Trump and Biden were too old for the job
said Biden would be better for the middle class than Trump
“He supports the people in regards to coming out here
showing solidarity with the UAW workers,” Mitchell said
Mitchell said workers are concerned that the transition from internal combustion vehicles may cost them jobs
“We haven’t really gotten to that point to see the job losses yet,” he said
“So we can’t look into the future to kind of see what’s really going to happen
But we’re all a little worried about that right now.”
Trump is skipping the second Republican primary debate on Wednesday and will meet with striking autoworkers in Michigan
seeking to capitalize on discontent over the state of the economy and anger over the Biden administration’s push for more electric vehicles — a key component of its clean-energy agenda
White House officials dismissed any notion that Trump forced their hand and noted that Biden headed to Michigan at the request of Fain
who last week invited the sitting president to join the strikers
The Biden administration has no formal role in the negotiations
and the White House pulled back a decision from the president earlier this month to send two key deputies to Michigan after determining it would be more productive for the advisers
Gene Sperling and acting Labor Secretary Julie Su
Fain said Tuesday that negotiations were moving slowly and they’ll escalate the strike to more plants if they need to

Leading Belarus opposition politician Nikolai Statkevich was jailed on Monday amid a crackdown on protesters who rallied against President Alexander Lukashenko's re-election bid
Statkevich was handed a 15-day jail term after taking part in Sunday's protest in Minsk
according to Belarusian human rights group Viasna
Statkevich was sentenced to six years in prison for involvement in protests after the 2010 presidential election - where he had unsuccessfully run as a candidate - and is barred from running again
Amnesty International reported in 2012 that he was facing 10 days in a punishment cell "for refusing to sign a confession"
other 50 opposition activists were arrested by police last week while they were gathering signatures to allow opponents to participate in the presidential election
bringing arrests to more than a hundred in May
People arrested included supporters of blogger Sergei Tikhanovsky
who was banned from running in the elections
Viasna said the interior ministry told them that a criminal investigation had been opened into an alleged act of violence against police officers
in which Tsikhanouski and other detainees were allegedly involved
With regards to the upcoming election, Viasna has in particular criticised the formation of the election commissions
The human rights group condemned the lack of "legal guarantees for the representation in the election commissions of all political entities participating in the election results in an arbitrary and discriminatory approach to opposition parties and groups"
Lukashenko has been Belarus' president since the office was established
and is seeking a sixth term in the presidential vote scheduled for August 9
During legislative elections last year, the opposition did not win any seats in parliament
The electoral process was criticised by a joint observation mission formed by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Council of Europe
"Fundamental freedoms were disregarded and the integrity of the election process was not adequately safeguarded in the early parliamentary elections in Belarus even if the number of registered candidates increased," it said
“These elections have demonstrated an overall lack of respect for democratic commitments,” special Co-ordinator and leader of the OSCE short-term observer mission Margareta Cederfelt said
“In a country in which the power and independence of parliament are limited and fundamental freedoms are restricted for both voters and candidates
parliamentary elections are in danger of becoming a formality.”

but this time with the nostalgia of Mexican aguas frescas
Picadas is the first Mexican hard seltzer agua fresca that combines real fruit juice with cane sugar alcohol in three flavors: mango

“I craved the agua fresca flavors I grew up with that none of the American ready-to-drink options really captured,” Martinez told The Dallas Morning News

Martinez was born in Mexico and studied for an MBA at Stanford
and that’s where the idea for his business was born
The recipe is actually an adaptation of the one his grandmother used to make at home for her family
The name of the drink comes from Mexicans’ taste for drinks “con piquete,” colloquial Mexican slang meaning “spiked” or “with alcohol,” so the natural name became “Picadas.”
In Mexico, the custom of drinking aguas frescas without alcohol is widespread. Aguas frescas of various fruits are found in businesses such as paleterías or from street vendors who offer them in the warmer months
“The good thing about creating aguas frescas is that the possibilities are virtually endless
Anything fruit-based can become an agua fresca,” said Martinez
who plans to offer more flavors in the future
as well as horchata (rice milk and cinnamon)
Picadas offered an alternative to adults looking for a refreshing drink with just a hint of “piquete.”

Police officers arrived a short while later in a panel van
But they left after seeing the gathering

“ I am calling for a swift audit into the health and safety practices in Paria and it would be important to go beyond
Collin Piper was also employed in that pipeline.”

He said the Coast Guard divers should have been prepared
“We want international investigators to come in and it is time for real accountability,” Moodie said
He said many non-governmental organisations and private interest groups have shown outrage for what happened to the divers
