Look out for your first newsletter in your inbox soon! instagramAbout us Contact us Port producers only declare a vintage in the best years, when wines hailing from the best plots are deemed of good enough quality and market conditions are considered favourable. As such, Vintage Port accounts for between 1 and 2% of overall Port production and vintage declarations are always eagerly anticipated The 2022 vintage did not look particularly promising amid a very dry and hot growing season The region entered severe drought at the end of June temperatures hit 45.5°C in mid-July and stayed above 40°C for prolonged periods in August there was moderate rainfall in early September creating better picking conditions at harvest and offsetting some of the effects of the drought and high temperatures the year’s challenging conditions produced small berries with a good juice to skin ratio contributing directly to the quality of the wines Seely described it as ‘a year of extremes’ but suggested that 2022 could follow in the footsteps of some highly-rated vintages ‘Such extremes are not entirely unprecedented: similar conditions were experienced in the great vintages of 2017 and 1945,’ he said 2022 demonstrated the remarkable resilience of our terroir and of our Douro grape varieties.’ Quinta do Noval has declared three Vintage Ports: Quinta do Noval 2022 Quinta do Noval Nacional 2022 and Quinta do Passadouro 2022 Seely added: ‘We knew from the start that the Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port 2022 was exceptional and the wine has continued to develop wonderfully since the harvest displaying the multi-layered complexity and depth that are typical of a great Nacional intensity and concentration with astonishing freshness.’ the Sogevinus Group declared four 2022 Vintage Ports from across its multiple estates: Kopke Quinta de São Luiz 2022 the red wines had a very clean aroma and very bright and rich colours These characteristics improved with two years of ageing and so we decided to declare a vintage for all four Quintas which each exhibit individual differences and represent a sense of place.’ Vintage Ports are declared two years after the harvest The announcements traditionally take place on St or at some point during the following few weeks The Fladgate Partnership marked St George’s Day by announcing the release of two Vintage Ports from 2022 – limited bottlings of Fonseca Guimaraens and Taylor’s Quinta de Vargellas Head winemaker David Guimaraens said: ‘The crop at Taylor’s Quinta de Vargellas estate was one of the healthiest we have seen for years and the Ports made on the Fonseca estates were outstanding allowing us to produce a very fine Guimaraens vintage blend full bodied and packed with dense berry fruit flavour Sogrape announced the declaration of Vintage 2022 for its three Port houses: Porto Ferreira who oversees Douro and Port wine production at Sogrape highlighted the good acidity and sense of place that underpins the character of the three Vintage Ports – Sandeman Quinta do Seixo Vintage 2022 Porto Ferreira Quinta do Porto Vintage 2022 and Offley Vintage 2022 – to be released in September Previous iterations of Sandeman Quinta do Seixo (Vintage 2017) and Porto Ferreira (Vintage 2018) are among the best scoring wines in Sogrape’s history creating great anticipation for the potential of the newly declared Vintage The dates displayed for an article provide information on when various publication milestones were reached at the journal that has published the article activities on preceding journals at which the article was previously under consideration are not shown (for instance submission All content on this site: Copyright © 2025 Elsevier B.V. Sogrape has released Sandeman Quinta do Seixo Vintage 2022 alongside releases from Porto Ferreira and Offley’s will join Sogrape’s long tradition of high-quality vintage Ports and bottling its own vintage Ports since the 1930s Only in the best years does it declare a vintage Quinta do Seixo Vintage 2022 therefore joins a long and illustrious history President of Sogrape: “Each vintage in this category is the writing of a new and exciting page in the centenary history of Port a tribute to our ongoing commitment to tradition Quinta do Seixo is Sandeman’s standard-bearer in the Douro region Sitting between the city of Régua and the village of Pinhão it spans 71 hectares and appears in documents as far back as the 17th Century Perhaps recognising its esteemable position it is the only Sandeman quinta to produce its own specific Port Occupying a stretch on the southern bank of the Douro Quinta do Seixo enjoys the area’s characteristic slopes its vines growing both on modern terraces and on sloping sites as is of the case in this part of Portugal the vineyard is also emblematic of the Douro with a mix of Port varieties spread across the land Touriga Nacional and a blend of Tinta Barroca with other varieties and a field blend complementing them Sousão (55% all in all) with the remainder coming from the old vines field blend Many of the vines are approaching 100 years in age Such old vines complement the blend’s complexity with concentrated flavours the Douro region saw challenges in producing large quantities Yet the overarching story is of a year that yielded high-quality grapes for the prestigious vintage Ports The vineyards saw a couple of heatwaves through the season: these suppressed yields but ensured that grapes reached optimal ripeness where the tannins may be expected to evolve over decades The growing season concluded with a mild September and some rainfall in the month Although that meant the team had to choose picking dates carefully now that the wines have aged in oak and been bottled Their most recent tasting note highlights aromas of black fruit “Sandeman Quinta do Seixo Vintage 2022 reflects the typical terroir where it comes from,” says Luís de Sottomayor, Sogrape’s award-winning winemaker for Port and Douro wines. “It ́is a wine that stands out for its elegant, harmonious, and complex profile.” Your email address will not be published. Volume 12 - 2022 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fcimb.2022.917282 This article is part of the Research TopicUsing omics to Study Leprosy, Tuberculosis, and Other Mycobacterial DiseasesView all 6 articles Multidrug therapy (MDT) has been successfully used in the treatment of leprosy although patients are cured after the completion of MDT and occasional relapse/reinfection are frequently observed in patients The immune system of multibacillary patients (MB) is not able to mount an effective cellular immune response against M clearance of bacilli from the body is a slow process and after 12 doses of MDT not all MB patients reduce bacillary index (BI) we recruited MB patients at the uptake and after 12-month of MDT Patients were stratified according to the level of reduction of the BI after 12 doses MDT A reduction of at least one log in BI was necessary to be considered a responder patient We evaluated the pattern of host gene expression in skin samples with RNA sequencing before and after MDT and between samples from patients with or without one log reduction in BI Our results demonstrated that after 12 doses of MDT there was a reduction in genes associated with lipid metabolism and cellular immune response among responders (APOBEC3A by comparing MB patients with lower BI reduction versus responder patients From the most differentially expressed genes we observed that MDT modulates pathways related to immune response and lipid metabolism in skin cells from MB patients after MDT with higher expression of genes like CYP11A1 that are associated with cholesterol metabolism in the group with the worst response to treatment the data presented contribute to elucidate gene signatures and identify differentially expressed genes associated with MDT outcomes in MB patients Multibacillary (MB) leprosy is characterized by a low cellular immune response against the bacilli and histologically skin lesions of MB patients present an infiltrate that is composed mainly by highly parasitized macrophages, few lymphocytes and numerous plasma cells (Kaplan et al., 1983; Pinheiro et al., 2018; da Silva Prata et al., 2019) MB treatment consists of a combination of rifampicin, clofazimine, and dapsone, a combination considered efficient to control the bacillary index (BI) after 12 doses of MDT (WHO, 2014) not all patients present a reduction in BI after these 12 doses Our previous study demonstrated that PBMC from MB MDT-responders (MDT-R, with reduction of at least one log in BI after MDT) produced higher levels of CXCL10 in response to M. leprae when compared to cells from MDT-non-responders (MDT-NR, reduction lower than 1 log in BI after 12-doses MDT) MB patients (Ferreira et al., 2021) we used host transcriptomic profiling by RNA-seq to explore differences in genes and pathways associated with a better response to treatment that could help suggest adjuvant or new and more effective anti-leprosy drugs Our data points to host pathways that could be associated with a positive outcome to leprosy treatment This study was carried out following institutional research ethics committee approval and in Resolution 466/12 of the National Health Council (CAAE 76328517.2.0000.5248 All volunteers agreed to participate and signed a free and informed consent before their inclusion in the study covering the longitudinal sample collection All the patients received clinical treatment regardless of their participation or exclusion from the study None of the isolates were resistant and the 1-year follow up demonstrated a reduction in both IB and ILB in both responder and non-responder’s groups Table 1 Clinical and epidemiological data of cases used in the study Snap frozen skin biopsies were thawed in wet ice and homogenized in a Polytron Homogenizer PT3100 (Kinematica AG RNA was isolated following the TRIzol Reagent standard manufacturer’s protocol (Ambion Contaminating DNA was removed using the DNA-free kit according to the manufacturer’s protocol (Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. Nevertheless, leprosy reactions and permanent disability have been observed in many patients (White and Franco-Paredes, 2015; Nery et al., 2021) it is important to better understand why some patients do not have a significant decrease in BI levels especially because this can be a risk factor for reactional states and consequently high morbidity after release we identified a molecular signature associated with a better response to MDT Analysis of gene expression after MDT revealed a significant decrease in the expression of 102 genes after 12 doses of MDT To avoid any influence of inflammatory response and/or the use of corticosteroids in the pattern of gene expression we selected samples from lepromatous lepromatous patients that have taken 12 doses in 12 months without reaction Between the genes that were down regulated after MDT we can observe chemokines like CXCL9 and CXCL13. The CXCL-13 is a chemokine involved in chemotaxis of B cells and known as B-lymphocyte chemoattractant (BLC). Tió-Coma and colleagues (Tió-Coma et al., 2019) described that the gene CXCL13 can distinguish leprosy contacts from leprosy patients corroborating our data of increased CXCL13 expression during the active disease AIM2 decreased significantly in samples from patients after MDT which can indicate that treatment decreases the expression of IFN-regulated genes and activation of inflammasome AIM2 Other upregulated genes in the MDT-R were involved in nociception (GAL) biosynthesis of highly unsaturated fatty acids (FADS2) glucose metabolism and lipid biosynthesis (SORD It is known that the breakdown of phospholipids generates free fatty acids and other lipid products involved in signaling pathways Fatty acids are metabolized into lipid mediators involved in inflammatory processes or act directly on cellular receptors The data presented here suggest that different metabolic pathways should be modulated in MB patients but lipid metabolism is a common pathway in both responders and non-responder’s MB patients Our future studies will evaluate the molecules associated with the lipid metabolism that could be associated with the reduction in bacillary load in the responder’s group demonstrating that the mean decrease of bacterial index per year is the same independently of the bactericidal drug used Due to the rigor in the inclusion criteria of this study we acknowledge this study’s small sample and the preliminary nature of our data but nonetheless set the stage for new studies and questions to be tested in larger cohort groups The present study brings new information associated with the host genes and/or pathways modulated by MDT that are associated with a decrease in BI after treatment which could be used as a target in strategies to identify new molecules to improve the lesion remission and bacilli clearance after discharge that could prevent inflammatory reactions and provide a better quality of life for these patients The RNA-seq data have been deposited in the ArrayExpress database at EMBL-EBI (http://www.ebi.ac.uk/arrayexpress) under accession number E-MTAB-11605 The studies involving human participants were reviewed and approved by This study was carried out following institutional research ethics committee approval and in Resolution 466/12 of the National Health Council (CAAE 76328517.2.0000.5248 The patients/participants provided their written informed consent to participate in this study All authors have read and agreed to the published version of the manuscript This research was funded by Foundation Carlos Chagas Filho Research Support of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ) Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) the Swiss National Science Foundation grants IZRJZ3_164174 (SC) and the Heiser Program of the New York Community Trust for Research in Leprosy The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest All claims expressed in this article are solely those of the authors and do not necessarily represent those of their affiliated organizations Any product that may be evaluated in this article or claim that may be made by its manufacturer is not guaranteed or endorsed by the publisher We would like to thank Cristiane Domingues and José Augusto da Silva for administrative support and Adelaide Lopes de Amorim Rosangela Gomes e Eliane Barbosa de Oliveira for technical support The Gene Expression Core Facility (GECF) at EPFL Elisa Cora and Bastien Mangeat for sequencing assistance The Supplementary Material for this article can be found online at: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fcimb.2022.917282/full#supplementary-material Cambau, E., Williams, D. corruption in politics and police two hooded individuals on a motorcycle approached Barbon a columnist for the local dailies Jornal do Porto and JC Regional and contributor to the local station Rádio Porto FM Witnesses quoted in the local media said that one of the masked assailants stepped off the motorcycle and shot Barbon twice at close range with one shot hitting the journalist in the upper abdomen and the other in his right leg Captain Adelcio Carlos Avelino of the local police and officers Valnei Bertoni local prosecutor Gaspar Pereira Silva Junior filed charges against the five men Silva told local reporters that his investigation is based on witness testimonies the owner of the bar where the journalist was killed had a problem with rogue police officers weeks before Barbon's death Barbon helped the bar owner press charges against the police officers for extortion and non-action against cigarette smugglers and later published a paid notice detailing the facts in the local paper Jornal do Porto Barbon also wrote several pieces for Jornal do Porto on police corruption in the weeks prior to his murder But Colussi told CPJ he was not sure whether Barbon named any of the four police officers in these stories Lawyers for the suspects declined to make a statement when contacted by CPJ saying they were not able to comment because the case is being tried under secrecy Barbon had worked as a journalist for 10 years he drew wide attention with a report on a local child prostitution ring The report resulted in the convictions of four businessmen He ran unsuccessfully for city council the same year said that her husband had received a constant stream of threatening letters and telephone calls according to international and Brazilian press reports Local media reported that police advised Camargo and her two children to leave their home after receiving additional threats [email protected] This year’s must-see shows range from a Nordic Pavilion exploring Alexandre Ferreira who have been working together for over 20 years Their works fill almost all corners of the art deco former private residence Although their practice is defined by a diversity of media from imposing sculptures to neon signs and small installations the non-chronological layout of the exhibition emphasises its enduring characteristic: the artists’ committed battle against the marginalisation of LGBTQ+ bodies and identities visitors are invited to wear one of almost 100 jackets that comprise the installation The Tearoom (2024) on which the artists have diligently stitched images famous for defending the rights of the community Pier Paolo Pasolini and Gisberta (a trans woman assassinated in Porto in 2006) By taking the garments from the circular coat rack and wearing them around the gallery the audience reactivates their radical spirit The title of the piece comes from a slang term for a public toilet in which queer people might meet for clandestine sexual encounters particularly in an era in which queer sex was criminalized Another peculiar iteration of the ‘tearoom’ materializes upstairs: Vagrants (2018) is a circular metal pissoir inspired by old-style public urinals Crowded with graffiti declaiming verses by António Botto queer Portuguese authors whose books were considered immoral and seized in the 1920s alongside an interior dotted with glory holes and a pervading smell of poppers, Vagrants is both attractive and repelling It urges viewers to step out of their comfort zone reminding us that rights are the result of struggle over time costarangos | designboom AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style Vidrala has announced the acquisition of the entire share capital of Vidroporto S.A ("Vidroporto") for €384 million at current exchange rates This figure includes the minority stake acquired at the beginning of the year the remaining majority stake acquired now and the debt assumed in the Brazilian company With this transaction Vidrala continues its internationalisation process and expects it to contribute positively to the group's consolidated profits and cash generation from the start of its integration The acquisition of Vidroporto represents an important step for Vidrala's long-term strategy as it boosts the diversification of the business towards the growing Brazilian market and represents a base for potential future development in regions that will offer interesting opportunities and will strengthen long-term alliances with strategic customers "We continuously analyse and assess the different opportunities that arise in the various markets This strategic move lays the foundations for establishing a platform for the future in regions that show promising potential for the growth of our people and our project" with its subsidiary Indústria Vidreira do Nordeste is a competitive Brazilian producer of glass containers founded on an excellent industrial heritage It has an experienced management team and strong business relationships with strategic customers It also operates two high-tech plants located in Porto Ferreira from where it supplies containers to some of Brazil's leading brands in segments such as beer Vidroporto expects sales of approximately R$850 million and EBITDA of approximately R$300 million It is worth noting that the Porto Ferreira plant has received a significant expansionary investment this year which is fully disbursed through local debt amounting to approximately R$ 900 million at the date of the closing of the transaction which has increased Vidroporto's total production capacity by 35% started operations at the beginning of the second half of this year and is expected to have an impact on results in 2024 We use our own session and third party cookies to analyse our services and show you advertising related to your references based on a profile drawn up from your browsing Since the 19th century, waves of German and Italian immigration to the region – part of a government project to “whiten” its population – have had a clear impact on the Rio Grande do Sul’s demographics: 78.4% of its population is white, according to the 2022 census – almost double the national figure of 43.5%. But there are also 2.3 million Black people – 21% of the state’s population, who are known as gaúchos. The 1952 harvest offered conditions suitable for its realisation. Luis Sottomayor joined the winemaking team in 1989, learning his trade under Almeida. Since 2003 he has led the teams responsible for Casa Ferreirinha, Ferreira, Offley and Sandeman. Four or five of the main Douro grapes find themselves in the blend, those from lower altitudes for structure, those from the higher altitudes retaining acidity, all working together for a long-lived structure. The wine is only bottled when there are no questions about its quality and it is deemed ready. Following three or more years of tasting, the final decision to carry the Barca Velha name rests with the head winemaker. A vintage not quite up to the highest standard instead takes the name Reserva Especial. Although current winemaker Sottomayor has worked in other wine regions, his commitment to, and knowledge of, the Douro is unsurpassed. He takes great pride in the opportunity he has been given to perpetuate the Barca Velha story, while recognising that he is building upon the creativity and daring of those who first set out to produce this great wine, unaided by the technical advances of today. Port house Ferreira has joined with Sotheby's to mark 200 years since the Battle of Waterloo with the charity wine auction of a bottle of Porto Ferreira 1815 Vintage Port. All proceeds from the Sotheby’s auction at the Tower of London on 7 May will go to APELA, the Portuguese Association for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which helps patients and families to face this currently incurable disease. The 1815 Port vintage was renamed the ‘Waterloo Vintage’ by the British, and tasting notes from 1990 suggest the Ferreira 1815 has ‘an intensely spicy aroma, hints of exotic woods, iodine and wax’. The wine was also described as ‘lively on the palate with good acidity balanced by residual sugars, dominated by dry fruits, possessing a balanced and lasting aftertaste’. Its survival is owned to the cellar created by the legendary Dona Antónia Ferreira, one of the great figures in the history of the Douro Valley. The auction will also include a lot containing five landmark Ferreira vintages: 1947, 1952, 1985, 1994 and 1997. Meanwhile, the Fonseca Port house chose to mark St George’s Day – a traditional date for Port declarations – to declare the 2013 vintage for Fonseca Guimaraens. The declaration also celebrates a bicentenary – Fonseca started trading on 8 April 1815. Fonseca Guimaraens is an earlier-drinking vintage style made in years when a classic vintage is not declared. The wine will be shipped to the UK later this year, and will be available from a number of fine wine merchants for £30 a bottle. The Brazilian art collector and philanthropist Gilberto Chateaubriand has died, aged 97. Chateaubriand made immeasurable contributions to Brazilian art in his lifetime, amassing an eminent collection of Modern and contemporary works that spanned more than 8,000 pieces. Gilberto Francisco Renato Allard Chateaubriand Bandeira de Melo, his full name, was born in 1925 in Paris and died on 14 July in Porto Ferreira in São Paulo. He was the son of the media magnate Assis Chateaubriand, who founded the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand in 1947. Chateaubriand began collecting art in 1953 after visiting the studio of the Brazilian painter José Pancetti in Salvador, where he acquired the painting Paisagem de Itapuã (Landscape of Itapuã) (1953)—an Expressionist work depicting an idyllic Bahian seaside. The Chateaubriand collection now includes pieces spanning more than eight decades, including works by Maria Martins, Tarsila do Amaral, Emiliano Di Cavalcanti, Alfredo Volpi, Abraham Palatnik, Hélio Oiticica, Tomie Ohtake, Cildo Meireles, Adriana Varejão, Claudia Andujar and others. Chateaubriand was a member of the international board of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art in Paris. He was also on the administrative committee of the Bienal Foundation of São Paulo, the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo, the board of Paço Imperial, and the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (MAM Rio) and the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo. Chateaubriand sought to champion emerging artists and once served as the honorary president of the Pipa Prize, a prestigious award recognising artists with a professional trajectory of less than 15 years. Around 6,600 pieces from the Chateaubriand collection have been on loan to the MAM Rio since 1993, and more than 100 are featured in the current exhibition Nakoada: Strategies for Modern Art, which deals with imperialism and art in Brazil. Chateaubriand had previously supported the reconstruction of the MAM Rio’s building after it was gutted by fire in 1978. It reopened in 1980 with an exhibition of more than 400 works from his collection. “Gilberto created a collection that reflects Brazil and the art and the artists he loved so much, who also loved him so much,” says Paulo Albert Weyland Vieira, the director of the MAM Rio, in a statement. “MAM Rio is proud to have participated in this history. Blue Dragons' top scorer in the Champions League who also arrived in northern Portugal in 2005 A conjoined history usually determines that it is the boys from Brazil who settle in Portugal Porto have three – the beefy and aptly named striker Hulk That they also have so many Argentines on the payroll is largely because of the general manager Antero Henrique's contact book "Porto has a fighting mentality," says Piet de Visser the chief football adviser to Chelsea's owner who is often in the stadiums and streets of Argentine towns scouting for the boss "The Brazilians have greater skill but the Argentines have more fighting spirit." Sir Alex Ferguson is well aware of the South American threat from Porto "They've a lot of Argentinians and the boy Lisandro López he's definitely a finisher," Ferguson said "Obviously Carlos [Tevez] will be able to give us some information." Ferguson is also impressed with Hulk "I'm surprised he's not in the Brazilian squad sounds like the ideal model of a continental-style director of football "He's a very good manager," says the former Porto assistant Jan Olde Riekerink now in charge of Ajax's youth set-up but who worked with Co Adriaanse when Porto won the double in 2005-06 Lucho and López's first season in Portugal "He has a lot of contacts everywhere so they always manage to pick the right players." Among those contacts are Fernando Hidalgo arguably football's most influential fixer "Javier Mascherano and Lucho were the big stars of River Plate and Porto needed a player like Lucho at the time," says Zahavi "There were not so many Argentine players at the time." an individual character who's creative and focuses on scoring – he has more difficulty dealing with disappointment," says Olde Riekerink "Lucho was important [in the 2006 double team] but for Lisandro it was difficult because he played on the right then the left and did not always start because our system was 3-4-2-1 so we needed a striker who could take the first ball and let others play." "We opened the way to the other Argentines," said Lucho "and have been important for them in adapting when they arrived we're very together." It is a sentiment echoed by Lisandro "I have always been treated very well," says the 26-year-old who has 43 goals in 100 league games and 12 in 26 Champions League appearances for the club "So I gave good recommendations to those who arrived later."
