An area comparable to the state of Roraima was burned in Brazil between January and September 2024
There were 22.38 million hectares - 13.4 million hectares more than in 2023
The jump from one year to the next was 150%
or 11.3 million hectares) of the area burned in the first nine months of this year is in the Amazon
The data is from the most recent MapBiomas Fire Monitor survey
Approximately three out of every four hectares burned (73%) were native vegetation
with 4.6 million hectares burned between January and September this year

further aggravating the fire crisis in the region - a reflection of the intensification of climate change
which ends up playing a crucial role in the spread of fires
This is reflected in the figures for September
where half of the area burned in the region was in forest formations,” says Ane Alencar
IPAM's Science Director and coordinator of MapBiomas Fogo.
September has remained the peak of this year's fires
While 5.65 million hectares were burned in August
10.65 million hectares were burned in September - a 90% jump from one month to the next
The area burned in September alone corresponds to 47.6% of the entire area burned in Brazil by that month in 2024.
Repeating the pattern seen in the first nine months of this year
in September three out of every four hectares burned (75%) in Brazil were native vegetation - the majority in forest formations
which accounted for 30% of the area burned in the month
accounting for 20% of the area burned in September 2024
As with the total accumulated from January to last month
the states that burned the most in September were Mato Grosso with 3.1 million hectares
Pará with 2.9 million and Tocantins with 1.3 million hectares
The municipalities of São Félix do Xingu (PA)
Altamira (PA) and Ourilândia do Norte (PA) had the largest areas burned: 786,000
More than half of the area burned in September is in the Amazon
A jump of 196% compared to September last year: that's what the 5.5 million hectares burned in the Amazon last month represent
This is more than half (52%) of the total burned in the period throughout the country
Half of what was burned was in forest formations (2.8 million hectares burned)
Another 33% (1.8 million hectares) was pasture
which was the most burned class of anthropogenic use
The Cerrado was the second biome most affected by fire in September
“September marks the peak of the drought in the Cerrado and this makes the impact of the fire even more severe
With the vegetation extremely dry and vulnerable
even resulting in poor air quality in nearby towns
affecting the health of urban and rural populations,” says Vera Arruda
a researcher at IPAM and technical coordinator of the Fire Monitor
the area burned between January and September 2024 increased by 2,306% (or + 1,479,475 hectares) compared to the average of the previous five years
1.5 million hectares were burned in the first nine months of the year
A fifth of this total (20%) was burned in September (318,000 hectares)
92% of the area burned was native vegetation
38% of which was concentrated in grasslands and 22% in wetlands and marshes
due to the greater humidity observed this year in the Pampa
the smallest burnt area of the last three years was observed for the period between January and September: 3,100 hectares
A reduction was also observed in the Caatinga
where 151,000 hectares were burned between January and September 2024 - an 18% drop compared to the same period in 2023
More than three out of every four hectares burned (78%) were savannah formations
which indicates that fire is being used to clear deforested areas
without supervision or control of the managed area.
there has been a gradual reduction in burned areas in the Caatinga
It is worth noting that even with the “La Niña” or “El Niño” phenomena
the last three years of the biome have not been drought years
it is important to note that the month most affected by fires is October
there is still the possibility that the peak of the fires will occur this month
depending on climatic conditions and other environmental factors.
An image shows the paintings stolen from the Netherlands' Kunsthal museum in 2012 — including Picasso's Tête d'Arlequin at bottom right
Two Dutch citizens claim to have found the missing Picasso work
A painting by Pablo Picasso that was stolen from a Dutch museum six years ago may have resurfaced in Romania
thieves entered the Kunsthal museum in Rotterdam and made off with seven works by masters including Henri Matisse
Claude Monet and Paul Gauguin — as well as Tête d'Arlequin
Authorities put the work's value at about $900,000
and most or all of them were thought to have been burned
The circumstances around the Picasso's re-emergence over the weekend are a bit odd
"[Prosecutors] said two Dutch citizens arrived at the Netherlands Embassy in Bucharest with the painting
saying they had found it in the southeastern Romanian county" of Tulcea
The Associated Press adds: "Romania's Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism said Sunday it was examining the circumstances of a painting a fiction writer said she found under a tree after receiving an anonymous tip."
have been sentenced for crimes related to the paintings' theft
said she put the paintings in an oven and burned them as police closed in
"Olga Dogaru describes how she made the fire, put wood on it and burned the paintings, like she was burning a pair of slippers," Romanian art critic Pavel Susara told the AP in 2013
"She's either a repressed writer or she is describing exactly what she did."
In 2014, a Romanian court ordered the four to reimburse insurers about $20 million for the paintings. But Catalin Dancu, the lawyer for the Dogarus, told Agence France-Presse the ruling would be contested
we don't believe the stolen paintings were the originals
it is up to the museum to pay because it took the stupid risk of displaying the artwork without a proper surveillance system," Dancu said
During the trial, Dutch newspaper NRC reported that an analysis of the ashes from Olga's oven showed that at least three or four canvases had been burned there — but that authorities would not be able to be prove definitively that it was the stolen Kunsthal paintings that had been burned
And the fates of the Picasso and Monets were even more mysterious
because they "were produced on board and paper
which wouldn't leave any traces if burned."
Prosecutors say the recovered painting is being examined for authentication

Brazil had 22.38 million hectares burned by the outbreaks of fire that spread throughout the country
September alone saw 10.65 million hectares—nearly half of the entire area affected in the previous eight months
The total is 150 percent higher than in the same period in 2023
Native vegetation accounts for 73 percent of the burned area
and Tocantins represented more than half of the burned territory
the Amazon was the worst affected and accounted for 51 percent of the total fire damage in the first nine months of the year
A total of 11.3 million hectares were burned in the time span
science director at the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM) and a coordinator at MapBiomas
says that the fire crisis in the region this year has been exacerbated by a more severe drought due to the intensification of climate change
“This is reflected in the figures for September
in which half of the area burned in the region was in forest formations,” she declared
the Amazon biome burned the most in September—5.5 million hectares
of which 2.8 million were in forest formations
Among the areas where the soil had already been converted by people
the cerrado had 8.4 million hectares consumed by fire
the largest area affected in the last five years for the same month
“September marks the peak of the drought in the cerrado
and this makes the impact of fire even more severe
resulting in poor air quality in nearby towns,” IPAM researcher and technical coordinator for fire at MapBiomas Vera Arruda pointed out
According to the average of the last five years
the pantanal was the Brazilian biome that saw the biggest expansion in the area burned in the first nine months of the year
The surge in 2024 was 2,306 percent from the average
A total of 1.5 million hectares were consumed by fire
of which 318 thousand hectares were affected in September
when 92 percent of the burned area was native vegetation
the Atlantic forest saw 896 thousand hectares burned
saw a reduction in the area affected by fires from January to September 2024—151 thousand hectares and 3,100 hectares affected respectively
A fire burns a manioc field in the Brazilian Amazon
Ancient farming practices play a role in modern rainforest fires
Parts of the Amazon are more prone to fire today because farmers thousands of years ago regularly set the undercarriage alight
But Brazil’s National Institute of Space Research (INPE) has only been keeping fire records since 1998
and two decades isn’t long in the life of a forest where trees live for centuries and humans have been setting fires for millennia
Paleoecology—the study of ancient environments—offers unique insights into how the first Amazonian peoples manipulated fire in the landscape
the effects of those fires on the forest’s ecology over time
and lessons that might help to prevent modern fires
Paleoecologists take samples from lakebeds and soils and examine those tiny fragments of charcoal that accumulate after a fire
hands-on science—teams backpack boats and coring equipment through the forest to remote lakes
then drill cores into the sediment layers at the bottom
Radiocarbon analysis allows them to date when the fires occurred
The first thing this kind of millennial perspective can show us is that there is virtually no natural fire in the Amazon
a professor of paleoecology at the Florida Institute of Technology
“We have 4,000-year sequences with absolutely no hint of fire from the western Amazon—no charcoal
not a speck—and these are not in the wettest parts of the Amazon,” he says
Most rainforest trees, with their thin bark and superficial root systems, cannot tolerate fire—and neither can the animals that live there
game-changing piece of ecology,” Bush says
“It affects everything from top to bottom in that system
and it will take many years for those plots to recover to anything that’s recognizable as rainforest.”
“The signature of fire is a uniquely human signature in the Amazon
It comes right in with maize or manioc agriculture—you know exactly what’s going on; it’s people in that landscape,” he says
We can’t say exactly how many people were there, but there were very extensive areas that were very heavily managed.Yoshi Maezumi, a Marie Curie Fellow at the University of AmsterdamFlammable forestsYoshi Maezumi
a Marie Curie Fellow at the University of Amsterdam and a National Geographic Explorer
has been investigating that transition in different parts of the Amazon
In one study, Maezumi’s team took sediment cores dating back 8,500 years from Lake Caranã in the Brazilian state of Pará
near where the Tapajós River meets the Amazon
Humans settled in the area around 4,500 years ago
and began burning to clear space for agriculture
and began enriching the naturally poor soils using a combination of compost
creating soils so rich they’re still sought after by farmers today
“We can’t say exactly how many people were there
but there were very extensive areas that were very heavily managed,” says Maezumi
Fire was a key part of their land-use strategy
The charcoal records, together with pollen and other plant remains, showed that people were clearing the understory with frequent, low-intensity burning, which Maezumi says would have limited the buildup of fuels and may have prevented larger wildfires.
because in altering the composition of the forest
the ancient Amazonians also made it more flammable and fire-prone—changes so profound that they can still be detected today
Crystal McMichael from the University of Amsterdam was involved in a study that used remote sensing to measure the water content of the canopy in different parts of the Amazon
“We actually got results we didn’t quite expect,” McMichael says
They’d thought that the fertile forests where generations of pre-Columbian people had enriched the soil—creating what’s called terra preta
or Amazonian dark earths—would be more lush than surrounding areas
Instead, trees on those sites had less green canopy and lower water content
They also had slightly smaller trees and less tree cover
with no sunlight penetrating to the lower canopy
once you get sunlight you get drying and warmer temperatures.”
The knowledge has implications for modern fire management—and the insights of paleoecology could potentially be used to inform how
and where burning is allowed in the Amazon
that could actually have exacerbated the problem
When disease epidemics after European colonization wiped out as much as 95 percent of the Amazon’s indigenous inhabitants
low-intensity burning stopped—and as the undergrowth returned
These flammable forests—making up perhaps three percent of the Amazon—could therefore act as catalysts for wildfires
enabling them to spread into neighboring old-growth stands
more drought-prone world that we are facing—a world in which humans light fires—what could we do
We could identify the areas that are the most vulnerable
like these forests that were managed by pre-Columbian peoples
What’s important, says McMichael, is that the ancient burning isn’t used to justify modern fires
Humans might have burned some parts of the Amazon for thousands of years
but the fire records analyzed so far indicate that the scale of forest disturbance in the 21st century is probably unprecedented
Maezumi’s sediment cores from Lake Caranã show the last few decades have laid down charcoal in the lake-bed at a rate four times higher than during the peak of the pre-Colombian period.
That would mean there’s nothing in the charcoal archives that can tell us what happens next, says McMichael.
“The fires that we see in the paleo record are temporally less frequent, seem to be spatially less extensive across the landscape, and didn’t occur everywhere. So really, we don’t know what happens if you introduce fire into a lot of those other areas,” she says.
says McMichael."},"type":"p","style":{}},{"id":"html34","cntnt":{"mrkup":"“The fires that we see in the paleo record are temporally less frequent

Snake island is the sole home of the golden lancehead, a snake with venom so potent it can melt human flesh instantly. Image credit: Nayeryouakim - Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0
Fans of herpetology might think they’d love to visit Snake Island
a remote spit of land off the shore of Brazil where serpents rule
That it’s the only place on Earth you can find a golden lancehead might also be a lure
until you find out that the species is so deadly that the island has been cut off from public access
Ilha da Queimada Grande, as Snake Island is also known, can be found just over 90 miles from São Paulo. Access to the island is almost forbidden
as the Brazilian Navy controls who is allowed on the island for their own safety
A few vetted scientists and Navy officials have been granted access to the island, but it truly belongs to the serpents. Among them is the golden lancehead, Bothrops insularis, a venomous snake that grows to over half a meter (20 inches)
Their venom is incredibly fast-acting because these animals feed on birds who
aren’t the easiest to track when you have no limbs
What the golden lancehead lacks in locomotion it makes up for in venom potency
being deadly enough to kill birds and melt human flesh almost instantly
Not a snake you want to get bitten by, clearly, but on Snake Island you might not have a choice. The volume of snakes here has been reported to be as many as five per square meter
With such an apparently thriving population of deadly reptiles
you might wonder why even the birds bother to visit
but they need the island as a resting spot on their migration route
The island is a risky resting place for migrating birds. Image credit: Prefeitura Municipal de Itanhaém, Flickr, CC BY 2.5We mentioned earlier that the Navy limits human access to the island for the sake of the snakes
If you’re wondering what such efficient killers could possibly need protecting from
The venom of golden lanceheads is undeniably remarkable
and as such it’s of great scientific interest and makes this species a desirable one for animal collectors
Poachers procure these animals so that they can sell the products through illicit markets
and with all of the known individuals confined to Snake Island
they’re not hard to track down if you’re willing to take on the risks of a trip there
breaking into Snake Island and grabbing a golden lancehead probably won’t make you a venom tycoon
In an interview with evolutionary biologist Dr Arie van der Meijden, we recently explored the false hype around the value of scorpion venom
While news outlets have reported that it’s the most valuable liquid in the world by weight – and it is – it's worth entirely hinges on your ability to find a buyer.
The eagle-eyed among you may have spotted a lighthouse on the island. The building is the remaining evidence of the few people who lived on Snake Island between 1909 and the 1920s: a lighthouse keeper and his family. According to Smithsonian Magazine
their story ended badly in the way that you might expect in a place called Snake Island
as they were all killed when the animals slithered in through the windows
When it comes to animals capable of injecting you with neurotoxins potent enough to cripple your kidneys and melt your flesh

Brazil has experienced a record number of wildfires this year
according to data collected by the country's National Institute for Space Research (INPE)
The figures show an 83 percent increase in comparison to the same period in 2018, representing the highest number of blazes since the agency began collecting such data in 2013, Reuters reported
Between January and August this year, INPE reported more than 72,000 fires in Brazil, comfortably more than the roughly 40,000 that were recorded in the entirety of 2018. Since last Thursday alone, INPE said it had recorded nearly 10,000 new fires in Brazil
most of which were located within the Amazon Basin
The latest figures come as concern grows over the apparent lack of concern shown by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and his administration with regards to the destruction of the largest tropical rainforest in the world
The Amazon plays a key role in mitigating the effects of global warming
absorbing vast amounts of carbon from the atmosphere
occurred in the state of Mato Grosso where a total of 8,799 blazes were reported—an increase of 39 percent from 2018
The number of fires has also spiked in the state of Pará
the state of Amazonas in the northwest of the country declared a state of emergency in response to an increase in the number of fires there
The scale of the recent fires in the Amazon region was highlighted by NASA researcher Santiago Gassó who said on August 13 that they had created a smoke layer covering an area of approximately 1.2 million square miles
Some meteorologists have even suggested that the fires in Rondônia may have been partly responsible for blotting out the sun in the city of São Paulo on Monday afternoon
which lies more than 1,500 miles away from the state
"Here in the Greater São Paulo region we had the combination of this excess humidity with the smoke
Fire is used in the Amazon as a technique to clear land for agricultural use
in what is one of the main causes of illegal deforestation
which means conditions in many parts of the rainforest are conducive to the fires spreading over large areas
the fires are largely the result of human activities
"There is nothing abnormal about the climate this year or the rainfall in the Amazon region
which is just a little below average," Alberto Setzer from INPE told Reuters
"The dry season creates the favorable conditions for the use and spread of fire
President Bolsonaro dismissed a question regarding the spread of the fires in the Amazon at a press conference saying
But it is the season of the queimada," referencing the time of year when farmers use fire to clear land
Bolsonaro criticized data collected by INPE
which indicated that there had been a significant rise in deforestation rates recently
deforestation had increased nearly 300 percent in comparison to the same month in 2018
The president accused the agency of making up "lies" that could hurt the country's trade talks and subsequently fired its chief
Environmentalists are becoming increasingly concerned with the administration of President Bolsonaro
accusing the government of encouraging deforestation and emboldening those who want to exploit the forest for commercial gain
Bolsonaro has moved to weaken government agencies that are responsible for protecting the rainforest
as well as regulations covering indigenous lands and nature reserves
Bolsonaro—who has appointed a prominent climate change denier to head Brazil's Ministry of the Environment—sees these kinds of regulations as in impediment to economic growth in the Amazon region
"The explosion of deforestation can be attributed both to changes in government actions
such as essentially ending inspections for illegal deforestation and fining those who are caught
and from the rhetoric from President Bolsonaro and his ministers
especially the minister of environment," Philip Fearnside
a professor at Brazil's National Institute of Amazonian Research
"This has created a climate of impunity under the assumption that there will be no consequences for ignoring environmental regulations."
Scientists say that the preservation of the Amazon is crucial if we want to reduce the impact of climate change because the rainforest absorbs around a quarter of all the carbon dioxide released annually by the burning of fossil fuels
experts are warning that increasing rates of deforestation are pushing the rainforest closer and closer to a "tipping point" beyond which it will not be able to recover

This Region-Free import gives us both versions of Gillo Pontecorvo’s fictional tale of colonial misdeeds that sums up old Europe’s attitude toward the New World
Marlon Brando’s agent provocateur and freebooting soldier of fortune foments revolution against the Portuguese and then hires out to reverse everything he’s done for English interests
The big scale production was filmed in several locations across the globe; it has a standout performance from Evaristo Márquez as a charismatic peasant eager to become a conqueror
The enterprising Italian producer Alberto Grimaldi’s superior legal skills earned him the good graces of Sergio Leone
after which he secured contracts with United Artists that made him the go-to producer for some of the most creative directors of the late ’60s and early ’70s
Grimaldi’s company PEA aided and enabled Sergio Sollima
Bernardo Bertolucci and even Pier Paolo Pasolini
Filmed as Queimada, the English-language title Burn! sounds like something that Hollywood might slap onto a ‘right on!’ epic about Black Power. Pontecorvo’s picture reached America just as our industry trifled with revolutionary themes, the worst example of which was Richard Fleischer’s Che! starring Jack Palance and Omar Sharif as Fidel Castro and Che Guevara
Alberto Grimaldi must have negotiated a terrific contract with United Artists, considering some of the extreme art films that UA ended up backing
Marlon Brando’s name value helped Pontecorvo shoot a sprawling epic with no romance and a downer ending that indicted white colonials for centuries of evil in the New World
Marlon Brando had kept his status as a top film actor despite ten years without a single big hit movie. By 1970 his status with the studios was nearing the status of Box Office Poison. Paramount strongly resisted his casting as the title character of The Godfather
That blockbuster and Grimaldi’s Last Tango in Paris would of course propel Brando to new heights of fame and fortune
British Agent Sir William Walker (Marlon Brando) arrives to foment revolution on Queimada
a Portuguese island in the West Indian Antilles
Enticing an illiterate young porter named José Dolores (Evaristo Márquez) into committing a bank robbery
he soon has him leading an army of liberation
Walker also approaches the business interests of the island led by Teddy Sanchez (Renato Salvatori)
Knowing that they also seek freedom from Portuguese control
Walker spurs them into overthrowing the country’s president just as the black general’s victorious army reaches the capital
Dolores his revolution over to its new business partners
José Dolores has begun a new revolution against the entrenched business interests
Walker is approached by a well-organized sugar Trust
He’s considered the ideal ‘private soldier’ to wipe out the rebellion — and deliver the entire island into English control
begins with main titles fashioned in the same style as those for Alberto Grimaldi’s Italo westerns
Pontecorvo’s ambitious epic has qualities in common with those Spaghetti westerns — the main conflict is built on cynical double-crosses and personal betrayals
this is pretty much the history of much of the West Indies
The initial colonizers exterminated the indigenous native islanders when they refused to serve as slave labor
They then imported a workforce of African slaves
Pontecorvo and Grimaldi were obliged to perform some political revisionism on Burn
to insure their continued business relationship with the Franco’s Spain
This is why the harsh rulers of the Isle of Queimada are Portuguese instead of the more historically correct Spanish Empire
Is it a coincidence that Brando’s fictitious character bears the same name as the American filibuster of the 1850s
Sir William Walker finds that Englishmen are not treated well by the Portuguese occupiers of Queimada
The popular black leader he expected to contact is garotted and beheaded soon after his arrival
leaving Walker without the puppet revolutionary he needs to raise a black army
readily states that oppressed racial minorities are often the first to consider themselves inferior
Teddy Sanchez has money to take Sir William to fancy brothels
but is ashamed that he’s a mixed-race mulato
Sanchez has straightened his hair and died it red in an effort to conceal his heritage
to no avail [and Renato Salvatori’s darkface makeup is almost clownish]
He finds nobody capable of rebellion until he comes across José Dolores
who is willing to kill to defend the honor of his mother
Walker befriends the spirited Dolores and soon wins his full loyalty
He cons José and his friends into robbing a bank
which gives them confidence and starts them down the one-way path toward total rebellion
José doesn’t question his benefactor’s motives
Asked what he might do if the rebellion succeeds
José imagines taking his people back to Africa
Sir William fans the flames of the rebellion while simultaneously telling Sanchez & Co
that they’d better join the revolution before Dolores has them all executed
Neither side gets what it wants — the ultimate victory is really Walker’s
Older movies about colonial Empire Builders (Rhodes of Africa
1936) celebrated ‘inspired’ leaders
ignoring the national and economic interests that sought to ‘administer’ less developed regions
raising armies to enforce their will on relatively defenseless peasant populations
Walker manages one regime change on Queimada
and ten years later wipes out both of original rebellions for the benefit of an English sugar company
The The second time around his actions haven’t a shred of legality
The Franco Solinas & Giorgio Arlorio’s screenplay studies the nature of predatory racism: when Sir William reconnects with his former protégé he tells him that they still ought to be friends
Gillo Pontecorvo skillfully avoids repetitive battle scenes
Most of the action is filmed with Spaghetti Western-style long lenses.t Pontecorvo doesn’t press for exploitative brutality and tortures
Producer Alberto Grimaldi engaged Ennio Morricone for an okay score featuring African percussion
does remind us somewhat of Morricone’s work for Navajo Joe
The show reportedly filmed in Cartagena Colombia, with additional shooting in Morocco. The one thing Grimaldi can’t deliver are convincing English troops. The costumes are okay but only a few faces feel correct in close-up. Scenes of rebels pursued through burning cane fields remind us of The Big Gundown another Grimaldi show with a politically committed script
stacks up as an honest primer on colonial misdeeds
The script doesn’t allude to contemporary global power struggles — although Walker does mention interesting opportunities coming up in Indo-China
Like other European imports with edgy political content
was mainly screened in big cities and college towns
Today we admire Marlon Brando — his sharp
witty performance shows real commitment to the role
He doesn’t lean so heavily on his method mannerisms
Viavision [Imprint]’s Region Free Blu-ray of Burn
is a fine encoding of a film once difficult to see in a quality presentation
Although some of the images still have a slightly rough appearance
color and sharpness are much improved over the old (2005) DVD
this is CineSavant’s first opportunity to see Burn
which is a full twenty minutes longer than what was shown in the U.S.
I believe that MGM’s John Kirk restored the longer Italian original
but it wasn’t offered on home video because audiences here would not want to hear Marlon Brando re-voiced in Italian
There was no English-language mix for the long cut
It may have been thrown away in a notorious vault ‘clean up’ by an MGM-Pathé executive around 1990-1991
two-thirds of the characters are speaking in the wrong language
The longer Original Cut in [Imprint’s] box should be seen at least once
for the extra twenty minutes of detail and complexity it adds to Sir William Walker’s political machinations
But Brando is of course much better with his own voice — it’s one of his better performances
MGM surely wouldn’t like it, but we wish a hybrid audio version existed of the long cut. Explosive Media notably did that to create an English-language version of the uncut The Big Gundown
In that movie Lee Van Cleef’s dialogue frequently changes from English to (subtitled) Italian
[Imprint’s] deluxe pop-top box gives us separate discs in separate keep cases
The longer Original Cut Queimada comes only with a trailer
They start with an excellent audio commentary by Alain Silver and Jim Ursini
using research gleaned from foreign publications
Ursini gets right into the facts — he says that the twenty minutes dropped for the U.S
release includes several political discussions
Generalissimo Franco’s Spain indeed insisted that the colonials not be Spanish
Alain Silver tells us that Gillo Pontecorvo quit the communist party in 1956 after the invasion of Hungary
who first worked with the director on the concentration camp film Kapo
The second interview is with Gillo’s son Marco and his widow Picci
who share interesting memories of Marlon Brando
A 1996 video interview with Gillo Pontecorvo is present as well
New video pieces include a talk about political cinema in regard to Burn
author of books on Claude Lanzmann and Chris Marker
Neil Sinyard offers general thoughts on Burn!
Two separate video essays look at Marlon Brando’s career in the 1960s

Data from NASA and INPE satellites confirms increased number of fires in the Amazon
two research institutions that monitor forest fires in the Brazilian Amazon recorded the largest number of fires in the biome since 2010
run by the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE)
recorded 46,825 hotspots; the Global Fire Emissions Database
a partnership between NASA and various other organizations
INPE detected 58,476 hotspots and NASA 106,083
the absolute numbers of the two surveys are not equal
The NASA data is always higher than the figures obtained by the Brazilian institute
but there is a technical explanation for this
The Aqua satellite passes over the Amazon twice a day
but INPE only uses data from the overflight that occurs at around 2 p.m
increasing the incidence and spread of forest fires
NASA uses information from both Aqua passes (the second takes place at dawn) as well as two others by the Terra satellite
By including data from all overflights by both satellites
a single fire that lasts many hours can end up being counted more than once
which is why the US space agency’s figures are higher
More than half of all forest fires in the northern Amazon occur in the final third of each year, during the driest season
Bruno Rocha / Fotoarena Wildfire near Porto Velho
fire is used to destroy many logs that have no commercial value
Since fire is rarely a natural phenomenon in the Amazon biome (not to be confused with the “Legal Amazon” area
researchers state that most wildfires there are started by humans
“Our analysis showed that between January and July this year
the 10 Amazonian municipalities with the most fires also had the highest deforestation rates,” explains ecologist Paulo Moutinho
from the Institute for Environmental Research in the Amazon (IPAM)
a nongovernmental organization based in Belém
which recorded 1,754 fires and 151 square kilometers (km2) of deforestation
had the second highest number of fires (1,630) and the largest deforested area (297 km2)
Mapping the overlap between fires and deforestation is not a simple task
fires in the understory are missed by satellites and larger logs are only burned months after being felled
which can make it difficult to link the fires to deforestation
To monitor these so-called deforestation fires
Moutinho and his colleagues from IPAM and the Federal University of Acre (UFAC) cross-referenced fire records with information on rainfall in the Amazon
Precipitation data was provided by the CHIRPS system of the University of California
which combines rainfall information from weather stations with satellite imagery to produce a rainfall distribution record with a resolution of 5 kilometers (km)
The researchers cross-referenced the CHIRPS data with information from the INPE Queimadas program
“We have seen less of drought so far this year
but an explosion in the number of hotspots,” says Moutinho
According to forest engineer Tasso Azevedo
an initiative run by the Climate Observatory (an NGO involving 36 Brazilian civil organizations) that maps land use in Brazil
burning and deforestation are not highly planned phenomena
“Since 95% of deforestation is illegal
the level to which it occurs is directly linked to the risk of being caught,” says Azevedo
The offenders believe that by clearing and occupying an area
they will be able to legally claim it.”
INPE’s Queimadas program has been mapping Brazilian territory using satellites that detect thermal radiation emitted by fire: electromagnetic waves with peak wavelengths of 3.7–4.1 micrometers
The program currently processes images from nine different satellites and uses three types of optical sensors to generate as many hotspot alerts as possible
the initiative is also capable of identifying areas where human activities are creating large clusters of outbreaks
As well as deforestation fires and burning to clear areas for pasture or agriculture
the system also detects wildfires caused by burning sugarcane bagasse and urban fires
The instruments on the satellites are capable of identify hotspots as small as 1 meter wide and 30 meters
three generations of sensors are used for this purpose: the older AVHRRs; the newer MODIS; and the most modern
which can be found on the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Suomi NPP and NOAA-20 satellites
can detect 10 times as many hotspots as the MODIS sensors on NASA’s Aqua and Terra satellites
The performance of the sensors is affected by rain clouds
The Global Fire Emissions Database records hotspots in the Amazon based on data from the Terra and Aqua satellites
As well as monitoring the location of hotspots
the satellites also record their intensity
“Radiative power is an instant measure of the energy emitted by a fire,” explains Niels Andela
“Deforestation fires tend to emit more energy because they usually involve burning a large amount of wood with highly concentrated biomass
If it were possible to observe the hotspots continuously with no interruptions
the FRP would be able to determine the exact amount of biomass incinerated
But this would require a continuous stream of data generated by geostationary satellites that always observe the same region of Earth
as well as a better resolution than current instruments provide
Polar-orbiting atmospheric satellites like Aqua and Terra are not suited to such an operation
“Although they only provide a snapshot
current FRP measurements [obtained by Aqua and Terra] are still strongly correlated with the amount of biomass burnt,” says Andela
“This year’s average numbers are relatively high and indicate fires associated with deforestation.”

Off the shore of São Paulo lies an island forbidden to visitors
They have a good reason: Ilha Queimada Grande
"Snake Island," is covered with deadly Golden Lancehead vipers
this species of serpent is believed to have the fastest acting venom of any Lancehead viper
The effects of its bite include bleeding orifices
The density of snakes on the island is estimated at one per square meter
Locals in the coastal towns near the Queimada Grande happily recount grisly tales about the island
a fisherman unwittingly wanders onto the island to pick bananas and is bitten only moments after stepping ashore
The fisherman manages to stumble back to his boat before dying in a pool of his own blood.

the states of Amazonas and Pará together account for over half (51.6%) of the fires recorded between January 1 and August 18
these two states have been responsible for 67.2 percent of the fires
According to the Environmental Satellite Applications Laboratory at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Lasa-UFRJ)
fires have burned 3.2 million hectares of the Amazon this year
nearly 1.9 million hectares have been affected by fire
accounting for 12.5 percent of the biome's area

Snake Island – or as it’s known by its official name
Ilha da Queimada Grande is a 430,000-square-metre island some 30 km off the coast of São Paulo
It’s famous for (you’ve guessed it) snakes
But this is not your average snake population
this is off the charts – it’s estimated that there’s over one snake per square meter
though no one went there to make accurate measurements (heh)
Some Brazilians even claim there are 5 snakes per square meter
small snakes – but the island is inhabited by some of the world’s most venomous snakes
including the Golden Lancehead Viper (Bothrops insularis); there’s about 2000 of them. The golden lanceheads that occupy Snake Island grow to well over half a meter long
and the venom in their bites basically melts the flesh around it – yikes
the golden lancehead is so dangerous that aside from special scientific trips
the Brazilian Navy has forbidden anyone from actually going to the island; and even for scientists
it’s absolutely necessary that a doctor is present on the expedion at all times
there’s another reason why the Navy forbade everyone from landing on the island – golden lanceheads are extremely valuable on the black market
with one specimen going to $30.000 – and believe it or not
some people actually took their chances with this
and actually has people who come to maintain it (cut some vegetation) at regular time
also maintaining the lighthouse on the island
because that’s where the birds are – their main source of food. Marcelo Duarte is a biologist who has been studying Snake Island for quite a while and has visited the island for over 20 times
He says that the locals’ claim of one to five snakes per square meter is an exaggeration
and believes that number to be 1 snake / square meter
I don’t know if there’s a record for this
but it’s likely the highest population of snakes / square kilometer. I think it’s safe to say that Indiana Jones would not be happy to visit this island
some 11.000 years ago the sea levels rose and the island became isolated from the mainland – as were the species which were living on it
Since migratory birds were the only food available
the snakes started developing more and more powerful venom
the last people to live there were the lighthouse man and his family – just as they were about to leave the island
they were attacked by snakes from the trees
the island is also home to the most venomous spider in the world: The Brazilian Wandering Spider
it’s like Nature is trying to write a big “Stay out” sign
