The Recife Technology Hub in Brazil is a global leader in producing software for engine control modules and transmissions that improve energy efficiency and fuel consumption while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Hub’s activities also encompass body electronics, virtual engineering and software quality.   In a conversation with Sarah Yasmini, a young engineer and software development analyst at the Recife Hub, she shared why she chose this professional path and the important role the Hub plays in advancing women’s careers. Can you tell us about your work at the Recife Technology Hub? Sarah: This is an exciting job indeed. I normally work on several different projects at the same time, and I am glad that I can handle them all well, although it is challenging!  The work in propulsion systems is fantastic and really excites me, as I think about how we are developing today what we will deliver to our customers in the future. We are working on very disruptive ideas connected to electrification, aimed at maintaining Stellantis’ position as a leader in the industry and in sustainable mobility. Today, we are working on exciting projects for our future, especially the Bio-Hybrid, which is going to take Stellantis to the next level in our region and is aligned with our Value pillar, “We care for the future”. There is nothing more important than caring for the future of our planet and the next generations. How did you get here? Tell us more about your career.  Working with propulsion systems was particularly fulfilling for me. It demanded dedication from both me and my team, which I thrive on! It was an amazing and enriching experience as it allowed me to engage with global teams and learn new things every day.  Can you tell us why the Technology Hub in Recife is attractive for young, new talent?   Sarah: I think the Hub is an attractive place for top talent for several reasons but three things in particular stand out for me. First, we work with innovative technologies that directly contribute to the development of software for our exceptional vehicles. It’s immensely rewarding. Knowing that our work influences customer satisfaction gives us pride to say, “I was part of this project.” The third reason is that Porto Digital – the technology park where our Hub is located – is a vibrant tech hub with 400 companies and 18,000 employees, boasting a blend of historic charm and modern amenities. Working amidst such surroundings not only inspires creativity but also fosters collaborations with colleagues who share our passion.  Do you think this is a job that should attract more women? Sarah: Absolutely. The perception that the automotive industry is exclusively for men is outdated. Women also have a passion for cars, technology and a fulfilling career, making this field a perfect fit for them. Diversity fuels innovation and helps Stellantis maintain its leadership in South America which is a highly competitive market. It’s one of the many reasons why this Company is a great place to work and a fantastic place to build a career. It seems we cannot find what you are looking for. Perhaps searching can help. personal significance that helped them connect with one small stretch of the world’s vast and varied coast After years of living and working all over Latin America I had learned that the locals’ comprehension—and even appreciation—of absurdity is one of the few constants across diverse cultures But nowhere crystalized this absurdity so perfectly for me as Recife When I first arrived in Recife to plan a summer travel program for American students except for a few young men wearing jeans and sneakers and lounging around Soon I understood why: swimming off Recife’s shores is strongly discouraged Recife’s frequency of fatal shark attacks is one of the highest in the world. Since 1992, sharks have attacked 59 people in the area; 40 percent of the victims died Mangroves filter water from the rivers around which Recife is built but they have been cut gradually since the 1500s so more and more polluted water has flowed into the Atlantic—particularly in the 20th and 21st centuries The pollution is thought to attract sharks and kill shark prey Development has also disrupted the surrounding reef ecosystem—attacks spiked after the nearby Port of Suape started working at full capacity in 1992 first for settlements and then for tourism the people of Recife have developed and manicured their beautiful beaches yet I was well versed in Latin America’s paradoxes I met Costa Rican coffee growers who couldn’t afford their own crop and drank instant coffee instead I learned that the government hired hundreds of female traffic cops thinking they would be less corrupt than men—but drivers simply ran over the women Latin Americans try to laugh at these ironies But in Recife, locals aren’t laughing. Frustrated by the attacks, they’re building underwater nets and lines and educating beachgoers with a person dressed in a shark costume Recife’s shark-ridden beaches struck me as the most darkly poignant example of the irony woven through the Latin American identity But it also showed me the relentless optimism particular to Brazil: our predecessors might have made things bad Part of the Tula Foundation and Hakai Institute family we met Pedro Monteiro at the Economics Library at the School of Business Economics and Law—a place he greatly appreciates – I have been very happy to exchange ideas with the community here at the university because I think there's great research being done It has been generative for me and I hope also for colleagues here Pedro Monteiro emphasizes the fundamental importance of an organization’s ability to utilize knowledge as it can make the difference between being more or less competitive or having more or less reliable processes Knowledge is described as the fuel that keeps organizations functioning but there are even stronger reasons why knowledge and expertise matter Recently, Pedro Monteiro published an article in MIT Sloan Management Review: How Not to Organize In-House Experts: Lessons From Boeing. The crashes of two Boeing 737 Max planes tragically claimed 346 lives and led aviation authorities worldwide to ground the aircraft This event highlighted critical failures in managing expertise an area Pedro Monteiro examines in his research – The investigations suggest that an inability to manage expertise properly resulted in faulty plane designs – I think that it's an unfortunate but important reminder that getting expertise right can mean the difference between having reliable processes or catastrophic failures Pedro Monteiro also explores how bureaucratic structures influence organizations Pedro Monteiro emphasizes an organizational structure characterized by clear roles focusing on professionalism and goal prioritization rather than the common understanding of the term His research examines both the strengths and weaknesses of bureaucracy it is well understood that bureaucracy plays a crucial role – What I found is that it’s not so much the question of whether it is bureaucratic or not but how bureaucratic it is—meaning how the structures are designed – Then that can actually support collaboration it’s important to understand how these systems evolve and what impact that may have on things we treasure he notes that bureaucratic organizations can also become dysfunctional – That's what we usually mean when we talk about bureaucracy in the popular sense or complicated processes that confuse people Pedro Monteiro is dedicated to making research accessible to audiences beyond academia. As the co-founder of the Talking About Organizations Podcast he shares insights about the importance of effective communication – Organizational studies is quite a small field but I think that's not always well known and understood I think it’s important to showcase to people that such ideas exist Pedro Monteiro discusses his podcast and the importance of research communication by independent institutions Pedro Monteiro sheds light on the organizational systems that shape our modern world driven by a strong desire to share the findings of his research – My aim is to help organizations navigate complexity while fostering accountability and adaptability Here you can read more about Pedro Monteiro.
