One former California Golden Bear will be playing for a championship this Sunday. Congrats to Nikko Remigio, who will be playing in his first ever Super Bowl. Remigio was on the Chiefs last year, but was on injured reserve for most of 2023. He still did earn a Super Bowl ring, but this time he’ll almost certainly be on the field. Nikko Remigio had an impactful AFC title game for the Kansas City Chiefs, helping set up them up with great field position (in particular with a 41 yard kickoff return), finishing with 148 all purpose yards. Enjoy the last game of football we care about until Cal ends up in Corvallis! PS: NFL, this is not the Big Game. Cal beat Stanford in the Big Game. If you keep calling it the Big Game, you need to send all of the California Golden Bears Super Bowl rings. Kicker Matthew Wright drilled all four of his field goal attempts in a game versus a critical division rival and the return game was respectable on Sunday night Once wide receiver Mecole Hardman went on the injured reserve list with a knee ailment the keys were handed off to training camp and preseason darling Nikko Remigio Special teams coordinator Dave Toub believes the Fresno State product justified Kansas City's decision to sign him to an active roster deal from the practice squad the middle – he even tricked some of our guys We have to do a better job of blocking for him finishing it up and keep blocking until the whistle with him because he will take a little bit more of a risk Remigio brought back a total of five kicks seeing the former undrafted free agent log 27 yards twice but have his first bring-back negated by a holding penalty on linebacker Jack Cochrane Remigio averaged 26 yards per kick return and made the most of his limited opportunities Punt returns were where he made his name known despite three potential attempt opportunities resulting in four yards yet it's a solid first impression nonetheless In his first regular-season opportunity to showcase what he can do yet unspectacular debut should keep him in the special teams mix as the Chiefs look to ensure that they don't have to play in the first weekend of the playoffs JORDAN FOOTEJordan Foote is the deputy editor of Kansas City Chiefs On SI. See our ethics statement A key player in the Kansas City Chiefs’ ascension to the team’s third consecutive Super Bowl is second-year wide receiver Nikko Remigio who has only been on the active roster since December 7 As the team’s primary punt and kickoff returner since Mecole Hardman’s ultimately season-ending injury Remigio has delivered two monster special teams plays that started Kansas City drives deep in opponent territory in the first two games “I don’t know that I could ever get used to this,” he told host Kay Adams of clinching a trip to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans and this is my first year actually contributing It’s definitely a special moment for me.” Remigio announced his presence with authority by opening the Chiefs’ Divisional Round victory over the Houston Texans with a 60-yard return on the opening kickoff He claims to have predicted his success to assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Dave Toub before the game but I’m about to hit it.’ He called a middle return right out of the gate A week later, with the stakes even higher, Remigio recorded a 41-yard punt return in the AFC Championship against the Buffalo Bills to start a drive at the Buffalo 34-yard line the return set up quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ first rushing score of the night Remigio had called for a fair catch on Buffalo’s first punt He revealed a conversation with tight end Travis Kelce that helped him take advantage of his second opportunity and I went and fair caught it on the 10,” explained Remigio this is my first time being in the AFC Championship Game Let me just get my feet wet a little bit.’ ‘He’s right.’ I went out there for the next punt ‘I’m taking it regardless.’ He was the first one to greet me coming to the sideline One of Remigio’s nominally three offensive snaps against the Bills was the final kneel-down This allowed him to be the first player to interact with Mahomes as the Chiefs officially punched their ticket to New Orleans “We were just so happy just soaking in the moment,” Remigio remarked of the interaction I’ve never had that feeling in my entire life To be able to dap him up as soon as the game ended To say Remigio has taken a long road to this point would be an understatement He originally signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Fresno State in 2023 he led the team in receiving yards (ironically in the same Louisiana venue where the Chiefs’ season will conclude) a shoulder injury sustained in the contest would cost him the rest of his rookie season Remigio did not make the Chiefs’ 53-man roster after training camp and he spent most of the season on the practice squad before taking over for Hardman in Week 14 The wideout appreciates that he has had to take the harder path “It really just makes this moment that much more special,” he stated I feel like I’ve had to earn – fully every part of it I didn’t even have a locker in the locker room last year “To go from that to finally earning a locker – every single aspect of my journey in the NFL so far and everything leading up to this point has had to be earned I’ve fallen short in some aspects and rose to the occasion in others It’s really just the journey that I’ve fallen in love with.” Adams noted Remigio’s custom cleats from the game Remigio then took the moment to pay respect to the Philippines “My culture [and] my nationality is everything to me To be able to represent the Philippines – there’s not too many Filipino athletes doing it at this stage To be able to represent my culture and my family To be able to represent them in a positive light is what it’s all about for me.” On Wednesday's episode of FanDuel TV's Up & Adams, host Kay Adams spoke to Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver and kick returner Nikko Remigio about a pivotal moment in the AFC Championship Game He reflected on a moment during the game when Travis Kelce pushed him to be great "Trav (Travis Kelce) had came up to me earlier in the game and I had fair caught that first punt coming out the gates "So I knew going into this next opportunity that I had to make something happen So I took a peek down the field and saw that the guys were #Chiefs WR @nikkoremigio on what Travis Kelce told him after he fair caught the first punt of the AFC Championship game 👀🔊 Remigio took the next punt for 41 yards 😏@tkelce @heykayadams @chiefs | Chiefs capitalized on six plays after Patrick Mahomes punched it into the endzone It was the fourth-longest postseason punt return in franchise history His 41 total punt return yards in the game He spent all of last season on the practice squad and didn’t even have a space in the locker room; his locker was in the equipment room last season But when the Chiefs veteran return man Mecole Hardman went down with a knee injury earlier this year it opened the door for Remigio to get his shot and he seized the moment and hasn’t looked back since Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub said that beyond his work ethic part of the reason Remigio has seen so much early success on punt returns is that he is still improving as a return man every week he got better and better and better,” Toub remarked And that’s what you want in a punt and kick returner is confidence.” Toub said that he was impressed by Remigio’s tenacity Tenacity is a trademark of Filipino culture Remigio said while he was on the “Up and Adams Show” with Kay Adams last week that his Filipino culture is important to him and is one of his primary motivations “My culture [and] my nationality is everything to me To be able to represent the Philippines – there’s not too many Filipino athletes doing it at this stage To be able to represent my culture and my family To be able to represent them in a positive light is what it’s all about for me.” Culture, family, community and teamwork are all things that are deeply embedded in Filipino culture. Pinoys are known for displaying unique optimism even in the most challenging times. You could even say it’s a core tenet of Filipino society — or Bayanihan The term has its roots in a long-held practice in the Philippines of neighbors helping a family relocate by literally picking up their house on bamboo poles and carrying it to its new location and when the house would reach its final location the family whose home was moved would throw a party or a fiesta for everyone The Philippines is a country that has seen wars and more natural disasters than you can count but you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone feeling sorry for themselves And it’s this never-surrender spirit that has helped Remigio and while Remigio’s hard work and attitude make a wonderful story skill is still the overriding factor of what determines whether somebody is successful or not— and it’s his ability to track the ball and catch it cleanly he’s not going back to catch it at the last second and having his eyes off the coverage He catches the ball in the middle of his body so it’s not bouncing off his shoulder or anything like that.” While Remigio might lack the top-end speed of some of the Chiefs' previous kick returners like Mecole Hardman or Tyreek Hill he’s going to give you every yard that you block and then some because he’s going to make people miss and he’s strong enough to spin out break tackles and get an extra 10 or 15 on his own.” Remigio has a chance to rise up and seize his moment of glory next week Author’s note: Rocky Magaña lived in the Philippines while serving in the US Peace Corps for three years from July 2013 to October 2016 I can’t wait to see what happens: laban lang 26-year-old Remigio DeLeon of Morganton was arrested Saturday (February 1) by Morganton Public Safety Officers He’s charged with felony flee to elude arrest along with multiple highway violations including driving while impaired and speeding 92 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone an officer saw a grey Honda Accord driving at 15 miles per hour in a posted 45 mile per hour zone and fail to maintain the lane of travel The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the driver rapidly accelerated identified as Remigio De Leon reportedly reached speeds in excess of 92 miles per hour The chase continued for approximately 2.1 miles ending on Highway 70 just prior to East Winds Ave when De Leon stopped his vehicle and pulled to the right De Leon and a passenger were detained and after further investigation De Leon was arrested and the passenger was provided with transportation to his residence The vehicle driven by the suspect was seized De Leon was brought before the magistrate and given no bond due to being on pre-trial release for a DWI charge in October of 2024 The Burke County Sheriff’s Office and Drexel Police Department were assisting agencies 30-year-old Peter Grant Catoe of Knollwood Drive in Boone has been arrested by Boone Police… 42-year-old Christopher Scott Woody of Antioch Road in Morganton was arrested by Burke County Sheriff’s… 33-year-old Kayly Renee Allman of Glen Powell Avenue and 41-year-old Dustin Ray McCurry of Hawkins… This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks The action you just performed triggered the security solution There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase You can email the site owner to let them know you were blocked Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page The 38-0 loss to the Denver Broncos in the regular season was meaningless in the grand scheme of the Kansas City Chiefs leaving Week 18 to be treated as an evaluation of the entire roster with backups playing significant snaps Chiefs wide receiver Nikko Remigio has impressed coaches since training camp and played a role on the practice squad and special teams The Fresno State standout took full advantage of his opportunity on offense in the blowout loss to Denver He led the team in receiving while continuing his role as a returner on special teams.
