One of three beachside stages at the Rio das Ostras Jazz & Blues Festival
For those seeking a truly unique jazz and blues getaway
perhaps a trip to Brazil is in order during late May into early June
the Rios das Ostras Jazz and Blues Festival is planning a special blowout May 30–June 2 with more than 30 acts performing over the four days
Located just over 100 miles from Rio de Janeiro
Rio das Ostras touts high-powered music from the beautiful setting of beaches and lagoons that the city has to offer
DownBeat caught up with the festival’s founder and producer
to discuss the anniversary edition and what makes this festival so special
Frank Alkyer: How did the festival get started
Stênio Mattos: I arrived in Rio das Ostras in 2002
He wanted a different project for the city
My idea was to build a new audience to attract more tourists
I created the project Rio das Ostras Instrumental
a series of free shows on the beautiful Costazul beach at dusk
with prominent Brazilian instrumental music artists
We wanted to be sure we were on the right path to do something bigger
we showed the Rio das Ostras Jazz & Blues Festival project to the mayor of the city
No sponsors — we could only count on money from city hall
we had difficulties like every first event
but we had the help of international and national musicians such as Stanley Jordan
They did everything they could to make it happen
Today it is considered by the specialized media to be the largest of its kind in Brazil and Latin America
We went from an audience of 5,000 people in 2003 to 120,000 in 2023
being part of the official events calendar of the State of Rio de Janeiro (through state law) since September 2011
Alkyer: For our readers who have no idea what Rios Das Ostras is like
can you tell us about your town and your area
stands out for its tourism and exuberant nature
On its 28 kilometers of coastline there are 15 beaches with clean and calm waters that are attractive for their preservation and infrastructure
The city also offers an Eco Rural Circuit that brings together countryside
mountains and lakes and also has a good hotel network
with around 70 hotels and inns and more than 50 bars and restaurants
Rio das Ostras is known for its cultural aspect
being declared by state law as “the jazz and blues capital of the State of Rio de Janeiro” in 2011 due to [the festival’s] success
Mattos: We have three stages spread across the city’s beaches with about 2 kilometers between them
we have an estimated audience of 100,000 people
Alkyer: For those looking to take in all that Rio das Ostras has to offer
Mattos: The city’s favorite places are the beaches. The main beaches are Costazul beach
frequented by surfing and bodyboarding groups
It becomes a hotspot at dusk with many options for restaurants
Boca da Barra beach is a natural outdoor pool with lots of tranquility
Praia da Virgem is a totally preserved place that fills the eyes of naturalists with pride
The city offers numerous other tourist attractions
The highlight is the Rocky Coasts Natural Monument
The Sambaqui da Tairoba museum is a national heritage site opened in 2015 and has a historical collection of bones from the community that lived here 3,500 years ago
Rio das Ostras offers opportunities for ecotourism
with ecological trails and dozens of rural properties that welcome tourists and promote new economic activity
highlighting the culinary flavors of the sites and farms
Alkyer: What is your concept for booking the festival
Mattos: The first step is to be careful and prioritize the quality of the musicians
The second step is to talk to the musician and show that the festival was created with the aim of forming an audience
bringing quality music to everyone at no cost
and that they will play outdoors on a sunny beach
one of the stages is set up on a big rock formation
The last factor is the question of value
We have limitations; there’s no ticket fees or big sponsors
Alkyer: What are you looking forward to this year
Mattos: We are especially excited about the bassists
who range from the well-known Richard Bona to newcomers such as Kinga Glyk
names that return for the 20th edition such as Spyro Gyra and James Carter Organ Trio are always special
as is the traditional group of Brazilian artists formed by guitarist and mandolinist Armandinho Macedo and accordionist Chico Chagas
mixing different rhythms of Brazilian popular music
Not even in my wildest dreams could I have imagined to reach this milestone
you are dependent on the will of the next government official to continue the festival or not
music and total integration between the audience
musicians and everyone that contributed to getting us here
which believed in this dream incorporating the festival with pride
It moves me to walk through the streets of the city in the period leading up to the festival
waiting; everyone is already working in some way for the success of the event
“This is one of the great gifts that Coltrane gave us — he gave us a key to the cosmos in this recording,” says John McLaughlin

The 14th December 2013 is a date that will be forever ingrained in Johnny Walker’s brain
It was that day that he had his first ever professional mixed martial arts contest at the age of 22
the fight only lasted 49 seconds with Walker winning via TKO
a trend which would continue throughout his career to now
Walker fought another ten times at heavyweight in Brazil with a combined record of 8-3 before moving down to light heavyweight in March 2017
where he had another two fights before relocating to Aberdeen
Walker had grown up in Brazil all his life
but Aberdeen presented an exciting opportunity to help further his MMA career on a global scale
Walker’s coach Leo Gosling who received a job offer from a businessman in Aberdeen
to go and teach classes in mixed martial arts
Gosling stated he would only accept the invite if it included bringing Walker over too
they soon realised the proposal was all a lie and that the gym owner was broke
which resulted in Gosling and Walker receiving no payment
their only option was to sleep on gym floors
both men stayed positive and focused on the bigger picture
and Gosling managed to get Walker three fights in a month
which not only started to make a name for Walker on the UK MMA scene (he went on to win the UCMMA light heavyweight title) but also gave them the much-needed money to survive and progress in the sport
It wasn’t long after Walker had won his next three fights that he decided to try out for season 2 of ‘Dana White’s Contender Series: Brazil’ which was held on August 11th
This was the Brazilian’s chance to prove to UFC President Dana White that after all the hard work he had put in since 2013
Walker was scheduled to meet Henrique da Silva and was looking forward to showcasing his skills
Walker was physically sick and had a fever
He also got tired within three minutes of warming up
so he chose to stop and conserve his energy for the bout against da Silva
Walker went all three rounds with Henrique
winning all of them on each of the judges’ scorecards
This was the only fight thus far that the 27-year-old had left it in the hands of the judges
“It was a great experience even though I was sick
and I couldn’t make it my best performance,” he said afterwards
“It was the first time that any of my fights have gone to the judges’ scorecards”
That performance impressed White so much that he rewarded Walker with a UFC contract
After that victory, Walker moved to Southampton, England to train with his coach Gosling, where he met female UK fighter and mum-of-two Bryony Tyrell. At the time
Tyrell was a part-owner of Exile MMA Central in Southampton
and later went on to train with Walker and Gosling in Thailand while preparing for her Bellator debut on 22nd June 2019
They formed a great bond with each other that still exists today
But Southampton was vastly different to Walker’s original surroundings when growing up in Brazil. Born Walker Johnny Barra Silva de Souza on March 30th
relocated to Rio das Ostras when he was a teenager
Rio das Ostras was a cool place to grow up
Walker would frequently go play out in the street or visit the beach a lot. Unfortunately
Walker got bullied for being so tall and skinny
before gradually moving onto lifting weights
which he fell in love with after his first lesson
he started studying Chemistry Engineering but decided that he wanted to follow his dream of becoming a world champion mixed martial arts athlete
After being introduced to the aforementioned Gosling
Walker was offered a scholarship to train in Brazilian jiu-jitsu
With the mentorship of Gosling fully formed
Walker trained at Team Evolucao in the South of Brazil
They then reunited to carry on with their close coach/manager bond that they established
Starting his MMA career off in the heavyweight division
Walker knew that weight class was not for him
where the 6ft 5 Brazilian has found great success
Walker has had three fights with all of them ending with a first-round win
his quick finishes means he has only spent a total combined time of 2 minutes 48 seconds in the UFC Octagon
gaining three “Fight of the Night” bonuses while in the process
“Starting my career in the heavyweight division and now in the light heavyweight division
I’m going to win the light heavyweight belt,” Walker said in our interview
I will move up and win the heavyweight belt.”
then you would have seen his worm celebration performed after a win
the last time he went for his signature celebratory move
he dislocated his shoulder just before having his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan
and this kept him out of competitive action for four months while his shoulder was healing
But the Brazilian says he is back to full fitness
I will have to look for a new celebration to do when I win as my mum won’t let me do the worm anymore,” Walker said
up next for Walker is Corey Anderson on Saturday
November 2nd at UFC 244 in New York City’s Madison Square Garden
Anderson is on a three-fight winning streak
all his fights bar four have come by leaving it in the hands of the judges
with only one of those wins coming by way of decision back in 2016
The rest of his wins have come by way of T/KO and two submissions
with all of those T/KO’s happening in the first round and one coming in the second round
With a win over Corey Anderson on Saturday
it could put Walker firmly in the UFC light heavyweight title picture
Would he be in contention to fight the current champion Jon Jones
“I’m not bothered by who my next opponent is
then UFC 245 in Vegas on 14th December.”

The second week of tour for BYU premier big-band Synthesis in Brazil was packed with concerts, festivals and outreach opportunities, including an appearance at the Rio das Ostras Jazz and Blues Festival.
Artistic Director Ray Smith and the student-musicians started the week presenting a young-single-adult family home evening in Campos. The cultural hall of the LDS chapel was packed and the group played a 75-minute concert that was fun for all. Before it was over the young people were dancing and the band had three standing ovations.
Synthesis started the next morning in Campos with a radio interview at 7 a.m. with the local FM station. At midday the whole band did a television interview/short performance for Globo Television. It aired on the noontime news show.
The concert in Campos was held at the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense. More than 1,000 people packed the hall, sitting in the aísles and on the steps. Synthesis did two encores and the crowd wanted more.
Ray Smith indicated that "audience members are very warm and loving and always express their heartfelt-appreciation for each concert. They often want photos with the performers and autographs whether it's on their shirts, backs, or programs." Synthesis members reported they have had more Facebook requests than ever before.
A tour highlight was participation in the Rio das Ostras Jazz and Blues Festival May 29-June 2, 2013, which included a selection of top jazz musicians and performers concertizing on four outdoor stages.
The festival, organized by the municipality of Rio das Ostras through its Department of Tourism, is one of the most respected and popular festivals in South America. During the five days of the festival, 28 free concerts are presented with more than 60 hours of great music.
Synthesis opened the festival with a concert on the town square stage with the Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop.
The next night, Synthesis was the opening concert on Costazul stage, the festival's main stage. There were 20,000 people at the concert and another 20,000 listening from outside.
Smith said there were audience members as far as they could see. The band played great and again received a standing ovation and an encore was requested. Afterwards, Smith did an interview on Web TV Rio das Ostras.
The band remained at the festival for two more days and did a clinic/exchange at a local university Friday morning. They also had a chance to see many of the other artists perform during the day and evenings.
The sponsor organized their own Churrasco (Brazilian barbecue) at the hotel for Synthesis. Everybody loved it. On Sunday, Synthesis traveled to Rio de Janeiro, checked into their hotel, had lunch, went to Church and then did a fireside for the Rio Stakes. It was a large building and packed clear back to the stage with probably 800 people. Smith reports again a great reception with eight stakes in attendance.
Monday night Synthesis attended a family home evening with all the Young Single Adults in Rio de Janeiro where they presented some inspirational messages.
On Wednesday, the group travels to Sao Paulo where among other things they will present a big band dance for the Church at the Ballroom Social Club Juventus for more than 3,500 persons. Before leaving Rio they spent time at the famous Christ the Redeemer statue outside of the city.
The culture class required for Synthesis members before tour is paying off. In each town they have had a chance to visit important historical monuments and sites.
The media coverage on radio, television and the internet has been extensive for Synthesis on this tour.

Teekay Offshore has won extensions for its FPSO duo Petrojarl Cidade de Rio das Ostras, and Voyageur Spirit in Brazil and the UK, respectively.
In Brazil, the national oil company Petrobras has elected to extend the contract the Ostras a least till November 2018.
Teekay Offshore revealed the extension news on Thursday while presenting its quarterly results.
Teekay said the extension with Petrobras had been agreed in July, adding that the Brazilian oil company would have further options to extend the charter until January at an increased rate relative to the option period of the previous contract extension.
In the UK, Teekay has secured a further one-year contract extension with Premier Oil to extend the employment of the Voyageur Spirit FPSO on the Huntington field in the North Sea to April 2020.
Compared to the current contract, Teekay said, the new one-year extension, which takes effect in April 2019, maintains the same fixed charter rate and oil production tariff elements, but provides additional upside from a formula based on oil price, regardless of production volume, which provides incremental cash flow upside to the company.
Providing a comment on the two FPSO contract extensions Teekay Offshore said that in both cases, contract extensions represented material incremental cash flow contribution with no incremental investment by Teekay Offshore.
“These activities also extend the timeframe available to secure appropriate future redeployment opportunities and potentially delay or eliminate costs associated with lay-up between employment opportunities. The Partnership continues to explore options for future redeployment opportunities for both assets,” the company said.
